On June 2, the department responsible for Canada’s public health approved the creation of three safe injection services programs (SIS) in Toronto: one at the South Riverdale Community Health Centre (SRCHC) on Queen Street East near Carlaw Avenue; another at the Parkdale Queen West Community Health Centre (PQWCHC) - Queen West site on Bathurst Street, just south of Queen Street West; and the third at the Works at Toronto Public Health’s building on Victoria Street, near Yonge-Dundas Square. duction programs. "This is great news in the wave of the drug overdoses we are seeing in our communities and across the country," said Lynne Raskin, SRCHC’s executive director, in an email sent earlier this week to partners and supporters. "It is also a victory for drug user communities, harm reduction advocates and all who have worked for this service as an evidence-informed public policy response to a public health and human rights issue." Raskin credited those who supported the east Toronto centre’s bid to bring the expanded harm reduction service to the community. "Thanks for your supportive deputations, letters and general encouragement over the past many years to make SIS a reality for our clients, for people who use drugs everywhere and in memory of those whose lives have been needlessly lost in the needless war on drugs," she wrote. In a joint press release, the two community health centres called the news an "important next step" in their ability to expand their harm reduction programming and one that will help to address the current overdose epidemic in Ontario. According to national statistics, an estimated 2,300 people died from an overdose in 2016. In Ontario, that amounts to at least two deaths each day. Jason Altenberg, SRCHC’s program director, said his organiza-

The SRCHC, home to the only memorial of its kind in North America for people who have died from preventable diseases related to drug addiction, has operated its award-winning CounterFit Harm Reduction Program for nearly 20 years. Serving people who use drugs and live in an area roughly bounded by the Don River, Victoria Park Avenue, Lake Ontario and Eglinton Avenue, CounterFit distributes and collects needles as well as offers referrals for health care and addictions services to its 3,000 clients, not all of whom are intravenous drug users. Between 24 and 28 clients are expected to make use of the new supervised injection service daily at the SRCHC. The program will be open weekdays at 8:30 a.m. and run until 5 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays and until 8 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Clients will go into a small room with three cubicles to inject. They’ll also be able to make use of an after-care area. The South Riverdale Community Health Centre is one of three sites in Toronto that will soon be offering supervised injection services. tion’s ability to offer SIS is one more step in the journey, one small part of a response to the current overdose crisis and an acknowledgement the war on drugs must end. Angela Robertson, PQWCHC’s executive director, agreed and said the news is an important achievement for harm reduction advocates as well as a "life-saving addition" to her organization’s harm reduction services. The plan is to get the three new SIS programs off the ground by

Aside from offering small-scale supervised injection services, clients of Toronto’s three new SIS sites will be provided with sterile injection supplies, education on overdose prevention and intervention, health counselling services and referrals to drug treatment, housing, income support and other services. A Grade 10 student at Malvern Collegiate is using his love for soccer to help others - a continent away. Ben Frolic, who lives in the Upper Beach, has recently started collecting gently used soccer cleats for Football for Good (FFG), Uganda’s only full-time residential youth football academy and scholarship program. Aside from working to discover and develop youth football talent in East Africa’s frontier regions, the organization also works to educate, build character, and give youth, communities and partners global opportunities. "My mom heard about (Football for Good) and told me about it and I was instantly interested in supporting it," Ben, 15, said during a recent interview. "I love the game and I wondered what I could do to help." Earlier this year, Ben and his mother, Jan, reached out to Adrian Bradbury, the academy’s founder and director, who was more than happy to be at the receiving end of their generosity. "It’s always great when a story touches someone at home and inspires them to act. The dusty fields of northern Uganda make it

incredibly difficult for us to get any more than a few months out of our football boots. And buying them, is equally difficult, and expensive, as we focus our resources on school fees, academic and character support and coaching," Bradbury, a Canadian who founded FFG in 2015, wrote in an email to the Beach Mirror. "This is a region with unlimited potential, with little investment in youth. Ben’s efforts will keep us on the field and keep us moving forward." So far, the east Toronto teen has collected more than 100 pairs of soccer cleats for Football for Good, which is based in Gulu, Northern Uganda, a remote area that is still recovering from a devastating, 20-plus year civil war led by Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army. The footwear is set to be delivered to the war-torn east African nation in August. "It’s incredible. I’m so glad I can be a part of this," said Ben, who is currently taking a break from playing league soccer but continues to play for Malvern’s school soccer team. The local teen’s shoe drive continues until August. Donations of bigger sizes, men’s 7 to 10, are especially needed. JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com A well-known east-end social service agency is looking to the future with the hiring of a seasoned and proven fundraising professional to head up its foundation. Teresa Vasilopoulos, a lifelong east end Toronto resident who has called the Beach home for five years, started her new role as the executive director of The WoodGreen Foundation in early May. Most recently, she was the head of global fundraising for WE, a global development charity and youth empowerment movement founded 22 years ago by Craig and Marc Kielburger. While there, there she helped lead the organization’s successful and first-ever major gift campaign for its 20th anniversary. During that time, Vasilopoulos also started consulting WoodGreen on its fundraising goals. "I was impressed with the calibre and scope of the work they do," she shared during a recent interview. "I was interested in (WoodGreen’s) innovative ap-

Vasilopoulos, who was also the president of Toronto East General Hospital’s Foundation for 15 years and spearheaded the local hospital’s $60-million fundraising effort for a new patient care tower, said she found the work being done at the founding United Way of Toronto member agency "inspiring" and something she truly believes in. "I also saw opportunities to connect donors with WoodGreen," said Vasilopoulos, who continues to advise WE on its strategic and philanthropic goals.

"There were many opportunities to shine a spotlight on a really stellar organization. There’s a big scope of services at WoodGreen." In her new role, Vasilopoulos said her focus will be to raise awareness about the great work WoodGreen is doing to help people from all walks of life and backgrounds. Anne Babcock, WoodGreen’s president and CEO, said she’s thrilled to welcome Vasilopoulos to the team. "Teresa is a seasoned fundraising executive with a proven track record of strong performance in the planning and execution of multimillion-dollar campaigns, securing leadership and major gifts and exceeding ambitious revenue targets," Babcock said in a recent email to Metroland Media Toronto. "Her tremendous fundraising experience at the local, national, and international levels make Teresa the ideal candidate to lead WoodGreen’s fundraising efforts moving forward, ensuring the sustainability of WoodGreen’s most innovative programs."

ABOUT US

We won’t be intimidated A group of disgruntled city councillors in Brampton seem to be confusing freedom of the press with freedom from the press. Angry with recent coverage by the local newspaper, some councillors are proposing a motion to scrutinize the media’s questioning of elected officials. It’s a thinly veiled attempt to intimidate reporters. The motion calls for all media inquiries to be posted on the city website along with responses. Councillors want future meeting agendas to include time to respond to media coverage. Meanwhile, at least one member of Brampton council has taken to Twitter, suggesting the local paper isn’t providing "real news." If it sounds reminiscent of the antics of President Donald Trump and his staff, that’s because there’s a strong and troubling parallel. This is all in reaction to assertive reporting that is critical of the city’s leadership. Councillors say they have put the press on notice. Such a statement demonstrates a blatant disregard for, or ignorance of, the checks and balances already strongly entrenched in the Canadian media system. Accountability starts with the news outlet itself. Complaints can be made directly to a journalist, editor, or publisher. If the response is unsatisfactory, individuals can contact the press council. The National NewsMedia Council deals with matters concerning fairness of coverage, relevance, balance and accuracy. Its members (including this newspaper) abide by its decisions. It’s a free and open process for the public. When media make a mistake, we own it very publicly. That’s not something everyone can say. And there is the law. Canada has very strict libel laws. These laws protect the reputation of individuals and organizations from false and derogatory remarks. Media are bound by these laws. There have been no formal complaints made regarding recent coverage of Brampton. Instead, this is about a group of councillors lashing out because they are upset with what strong local reporting has unearthed. These councillors forget that media are not accountable to elected officials. Media are accountable to the public, the same group whose money these councillors are spending. Claiming to put the press on notice is a poorly disguised attack on the fundamental freedoms laid out in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Councillors are trying to stifle critical voices and control our free, independent and responsible media. Any attempt by elected officials to limit the free flow of information is an attack on the basic democratic principles our society upholds. It won’t work. Metroland Media and all its newsrooms will continue to hold our elected officials to account and report stories that are in the best interest of our readers.

Millennials don’t want suburban Toronto dream Ken Greenberg builds cities, or rather, rebuilds them. And he told an audience of Liberals in Scarborough it’s time to rebuild Toronto’s inner suburbs. Redesigning them will be a "wrenching transition," Greenberg says, and our biggest project of the next two generations. A generation ago, urbanists like James Howard Kunstler predicted North America’s runaway suburban dream would start to collapse when oil became unaffordable. Oil’s now cheap. But Greenberg told the Liberal faithful we must transform large parts of Toronto, or our city won’t stay successful. "Downtown poverty was exported to Scarborough and Etobicoke because of where people prefer to

MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto live," the University of Toronto professor says. Growth in its suburbs outpaced Toronto’s core until 2006. Then the script flipped. Millennials have a new North American dream, Greenberg says. They don’t want to live in spread-out suburbs where nothing mixes with anything else. They want to live where they work, walk to get gro-

ceries. They don’t even want a car. They’ve gone downtown, and companies follow them there. Future success will go to Toronto’s mixed-use neighbourhoods. Where does that leave the poorer areas of Scarborough, Etobicoke and North York? Greenberg says we must reverse engineer our wide surburban roads back into lively, walkable streets with more public places where we can meet. Toronto’s multicultural identity is at risk otherwise, because the suburban pattern "keeps people segregated." Surface parking lots and parts of hydro corridors become new mixed use neighbourhoods, a weakness becoming a strength. Can we do this with the suburban politicians we

have? No, probably. Many of them fought, and still fight, to save their "single-family neighbourhoods" against renters, roomers, townhouses, midrise condos, offices for midwives on a major road, or street parking, because certain long-time residents in houses - the people they listen to most - don’t want change. But unless Greenberg is wrong, big changes must come, or those neighbourhoods will stagnate as Toronto’s core becomes unaffordable. He was speaking to almost 100 federal party members. Some may become city councillors or MPPs. Let’s hope they’re brave. Reach Edges columnist Mike Adler at madler@insidetoronto.com

11AM - 4PM For a homeowner, there is no easy answer when deciding whether to sell your existing home or find a new one first, as there are pros and cons to consider with both options. “Several factors will impact your decision, including your personal finances, your timeline and local market conditions,” explains Ettore Cardarelli, president of the Ontario Real Estate Association. “It is different for each homebuyer.” If you sell your existing home before buying a new one, you may have to find a place to live and store your furniture before you can take possession of your new home. On the positive side, you’ll have a more precise budget to put toward your new home, and your offer may be more attractive to sellers looking to close quickly.

If you buy before you sell, you may be on the hook for two mortgages and other housing related expenses until your first home sells. However, this option gives you more time and flexibility to find the perfect place. Ask your Realtor about your options. “Depending on your market, you might choose to negotiate an extended closing period or make the purchase conditional on the sale of your current home within a specified amount of time,” says Cardarelli. “Whether you’re in a seller’s market or buyer’s market will impact your negotiating power.”

Scrap it! BEHIND THE SCENES: Work starts early in the morning at the Canada Iron & Metal Co. All manner of vehicles pull in to the 1.75 acre lot at the north-east corner of Jane and Dundas streets, with their refuse aboard. After being weighed and paid the scrap is unloaded in a heap in front of a crane

equipped with an electromagnetic grappler, and the sorting begins. Canada Iron & Metal, after all, is a recycler and without a place for everything and everything in its place, nothing would get done. Brass, copper, stainless steel, e-waste and more find their way to bins and eventually out of the lot, to dealers and manufacturers for re-purposing.
