The popular July 1 event is run by volunteers, and a mixup with some volunteers leaving last fall left some loose ends, most notably the lack of an application for a much-needed grant from Heritage Canada.

Film to be screened at festivals JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com A moving documentary that celebrates the hard working, entrepreneurial families and spirit of the Gerrard India Bazaar has now hit the airwaves.

Little India: Village of Dreams premièred on TVO on July 1 as part of its Here and Now 150 documentary series for Canada’s 150th anniversary.

The 58-minute-long film, which tells the story of the families behind Kala Kendar, Chandan Fashion, Forever Young Beauty Salon and Spa, and Lahore Tikka House, can now be viewed online at tvo.org.

Featuring an original score by Philip Strong, the

colourful film takes a closer look both the roots of the Gerrard India Bazaar from its start as a South Asian hub with Bollywood movies being screened at the former Naaz Theatre to its future, which includes a range of restaurateurs and shop owners from all backgrounds.

The TV doc is part of a cross-platform initiative that also includes a 70-minute version of the film that will be submitted to festivals as well as an interactive website that features 24 web portraits.

"This idea was developed at the same time as the film because we knew (it) could have limits," said filmmaker Nina Beveridge of Beevision Productions. "We tried to get a variety of characters and cultures representing old and new, east and west."

Some of the businesses and individuals featured in

the mini docs, which are two to seven minutes long, include Dawn Chapman of Lazy Daisy’s Café, Hubert DMello of Udupi Palace, Karen Gill of Heal with Kare, Raju and Ronak Diwan of Baldev Paan, Davinder Chada and Neelu Sabharwal of Motimahal, Gurnam Multani of Milan Saree, and Tatiana Lewicka of Victoria Whole Foods.

Another important piece of the Village of Dreams project is user-generated content.

Beevision and Village of Dreams Productions together with TVO, the Gerrard/Ashdale Library, and the City of Toronto Archives invited people to share stories, photos, and videos that reflected the neighbourhood’s people, locations, culture, and spirit from the late 1970s to the present day.

Beveridge, who was born in Bombay, India but has called the Little India area home for almost 20 years, said Little India: Village of Dreams in its many forms aims to get people talking about the future of the local

business district, the South Asian family unit, the entrepreneurial spirit of Gerrard Street East, and the diversity and identity of the evolving neighbourhood.

"For me, I feel this project has the potential to be a strong marketing vehicle for the Bazaar," Beveridge said.

"My goal is to have a positive impact, to help the neighbourhood.

That would be my dream outcome."

She also said the project has been a window into the dynamics of the neighbourhood.

"Making this film has been a real personal growth experience. Because of this project I feel I’ve established meaningful roots in this area," Beveridge shared over a coffee at a local café.

Next weekend, salsa, merengue and cumbia sounds will be coming to Woodbine Park, near Lake Shore Boulevard East and Coxwell Avenue. The festivities will get underway at 5 p.m. on Friday, July 14 with a 6

p.m. show by Santerias and conclude with a 6:30 p.m. show on Sunday, July 16 by Latin Swing Orchestra.

Jazz music lovers can also enjoy concerts from noon to 7 p.m. daily at Kew Gardens Park, 2075 Queen St. E. at Lee Avenue, on July 15, 16, 22 and

23.

The weekends of July 21 to 23 and July 28 to 30, there will also be a full roster of music and events at Woodbine Park.

The first weekend will feature acts on the main stage as well as urban and a cappella stages, while the following week-

end will include main stage acts along with shows on the urban and Big Band stages.

Once again, the always-popular Streetfest is making a return to a two-and-a-half-kilometre stretch of Queen Street East from Thursday, July 27 to Saturday, July 29. The signature event, which will showcase more than 40 Canadian bands from all musical genres, will run from 7 to 11 p.m. nightly.

Revellers of all ages can also learn more about jazz music during a series of free workshops from Monday, July 24 to Wednesday, July 26 at the Mennonite New Life Centre, 1774 Queen St. E. at Lark Street.

For the 29th consecutive year, the free, nearly month-long, communitybased festival is continuing to foster and highlight the talent of emerging artists, said its founder and executive director Lido Chilelli.

"We’re always looking for the next biggest thing," he said during a recent news conference.This year is no different, added Bill King, longtime artistic director of the festival which runs July 7 to 30."The reason we started this festival is because we saw musicians from our community not getting stage play like other artists. We changed that," he said.

"Many Beaches Jazz artists have gone on to have great careers. It’s fantastic to see the young ones go out and find their place in the world and make music."

Both Chilelli and King also thanked the many sponsors and supporters for helping make the festival a resounding success year after year.

Chilelli, a longtime Beach resident, also said Beaches Jazz is an important part of Toronto’s vision as a music city and a major player in the greater festival scene. Two-day Afrofest at Woodbine Park

The city also put on the fireworks show.

"I’m pleased the city was able to once again commit to funding a significant portion of (the event)," Davis said. In the end, she said thousands of people had a great time at a well-loved community event.

"It’s like a small town parade and fair. East York has such a sense of community spirit and pride," she said.

"We’ve managed to make sure Canada Day is a special event in East York no matter the circumstances. Canada Day is a significant event for our community and we will continue to make sure it happens."

Moving forward, Timms said she’d like to see East York’s Canada Day festivities get back to its roots.

"I’d love to bring back more of the community involvement," said Timms, who has received several messages from community members eager to get involved.

"I want it to go back to a more sponsored event so the grant is more of a bonus."

The corporation also missed the deadline to apply for a Canada 150 grant and despite the best of efforts from local MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith’s office did not get that additional funding.

Determined to push forward, an urgent call for help was issued.

Local MPP Arthur Potts, along with area resident Michael Rusek and a couple of other community members came forward to raise some funds. "(The event) was in real danger of cancellation, but together we were able to raise almost $15,000," Rusek said Tuesday.

In a release, Potts said he’s pleased his office was "able to rally a large number of very generous sponsors to help."

He also urged everyone to thank the volunteers, organizers, and sponsors for helping make events, like Canada Day in East York, a reality. The organizations and agencies that help save the event include: Blue Goose Pure Foods, The Carpenters Union, Susan

Gucci Real Estate Team, Labourers’ International Union of North America, Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council, Wright Sisters Realty, The Danforth Mosaic Business Improvement Area, East York Foundation, Insurance Brokers of Toronto Region, Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council, which sponsored the mainstage, and Insurance Brokers of Toronto Region, which sponsored the bingo tent.

"They did a fabulous job fundraising," said Timms, who also credited Ward 31 Councillor Janet Davis for her efforts to save the event, which costs roughly $55,000 to put on each year.

The City of Toronto has been a longtime partner of the celebration, but this year helped out in a much bigger way.

"The city stepped up. We covered all of the costs associated with the stage, the sound system, the washrooms, the garbage collection . all of the logistical parts of the event," Davis told The East York Mirror.

"We also picked up the cost of the parks permit and the insurance."

Downtown baby boom calls for civic attention Ah, to be young, living in a vibrant and accessible city - and, of course, in love.

It is a dream that is coming true for a growing number of young people who’ve chosen to start their lives in the condominium canyons of downtown Toronto. After sequestering themselves in a smallish apartment, small enough to encourage them to step out and enjoy the bars and restaurants and activities of downtown Toronto, it is inevitable that some of them will meet and fall for each other.

It is only a step or two from there to where we are now: a downtown crowded with a new cohort that is even younger.

Babies.

Social Planning Toronto, an advocacy group looking at urban form and social justice issues, has released a report looking at the age and sex data from the latest census across all of Toronto’s neighbourhoods.

And while the numbers of youngsters are constant across the city compared to previous censuses, there is a noticeable baby bump in the downtown. Over the past decade, the number of children younger than five has increased dramatically: some parts of the downtown by threefold, others by 70 to 90 per cent. If nature continues to take its course, there will be more now and even more in the future.

This presents a challenge that city planners have been expecting for years but have still been struggling to meet: the need to transform Toronto’s downtown from its old role as a commercial and cultural centre into a collection of intensified residential neighbourhoods where space is at a premium.

As it sits now, downtown Toronto is not especially family-friendly. Park and open space are very limited.

There will need to be more classroom space as those toddlers move through the preschool stage to school age.

The core will need more community centres, and a lot more licensed child care that’s affordable and close by.

And developers raising condominium towers and rental units will have to make larger units a more common feature in their projects. It’s tough enough to squeeze two people into 600 square feet, after all - never mind a growing family.

There are worse problems to have, of course. A whole clutch of growing families in a dense neighbourhood has been a dream of progressive urban planners for more than half a century, and that is exactly what we have downtown.

Now, all we’ve got to do is make it work.

Byelections should always trump appointments Picking the councillor for Ward 44 in Scarborough was a long and occasionally entertaining process.

Council had decided to appoint a councillor to fill the east-end Scarborough seat following Coun. Ron Moeser’s death in April, and as always in these cases, aspiring city councillors came out of the woodwork. A total of 48 of them put in applications, and most of those also came to a special council meeting last week to make their case.

They needn’t have bothered. Councillors had already made up their minds on one of two obvious choices: a former city councillor with a reputation for fair-mindedness and a former city bureau-

All 46 others may as well have stayed home or simply withdrawn their applications, rather than give the stump-speech deputations that they did, in front of a city council listening as politely as it could.

Of course, it wouldn’t have done to tell anyone that, because doing so would only highlight how undemocratic it is for a city council to pick its own membership.

This doesn’t happen at other levels of government. When a vacancy occurs federally or provincially, there’s a byelection - period.

Picking their representative is a part of a citizen’s democratic franchise.

As matters transpired in Ward 44, the electors there at least had their franchise respected. Jim Hart, the former bureaucrat, worked with the late Coun. Moeser for a year and will almost certainly fit well with the will of voters in 2014.

But, that is not neces-

sarily always going to be the case. When the late Jack Layton left his Ward 30 seat to lead the federal New Democratic Party, there was a move afoot by conservative-minded councillors to install a right-wing appointee as caretaker until the next election. They didn’t prevail, but the only thing that prevented them was a hard push from council’s left and centre.

The only thing that will prevent that in the future is byelections - all the time, no matter what.

Broadview Hotel set to reopen this month JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com A circa 1891 Riverside landmark will soon be reopening its doors to the public.

After more than two years of work, the newlyrenovated Broadview Hotel at the northwest corner of Queen Street East and Broadview Avenue will be welcoming patrons for the first time on Thursday, July 27.

The boutique hotel and event venue will include 58 guest rooms, a lobby cafe and bar, a restaurant, a roof top lounge and more than 3,000 square feet of event space.

Streetcar Developments and Dream Unlimited are working together to resurrect the 126-year-old east Toronto landmark.

Konik has spent a lifetime growing strawberries, peaches and plums, the majority of which is sold at the terminal. Left, Nature’s Gardener, Manuel Macedo, loads up his truck with fresh flowers. The terminal is where independent shops, garden centres and florists buy market-ready flowers. Right, Buyer Tom So samples a red delicious apple. Buyers walk the market, checking products and prices of individual sellers before deciding to make a purchase. The farmers’ market is located underneath the terminal’s parking deck; protecting buyers and sellers from rain, snow, and the heat of the sun.

The Otterville, Ont.-based farm owned by the Den Boer family grows 13 different crops and multiple varieties of each including five types of radishes. It caters to higher-end supermarkets.

Top, the view through the front window of the Street Produce warehouse location, shows work in process. The terminal has 80 warehouse units.

Middle, a truck is loaded with produce purchases at the Ontario Food Terminal farmers’ market. Approximately 2 billion pounds of produce is distributed through the terminal each year (5.5 million per day). Bottom, ceiling-mounted refrigeration units maintain the temperature on one of the storage rooms at the terminal warehouse. The terminal has 100,000 square feet of cold storage space over 19 rooms. Each room is individually controlled for temperature and humidity. An air filtration system developed for the space shuttle takes bacteria out of the rooms. insidetoronto.com
