fourth annual edition. Just over a month ago, the Pocket Community Association (PCA), which runs and helps fund Art in Phin Park, learned it wouldn’t be receiving a much-

needed grant from the Toronto Arts Council, putting the initiative in jeopardy. The community group relies on the funding to purchase art supplies as well as hire artist-in-

Flying cars, one global currency, and humanoid robot helpers are just a few ideas tech experts have predicted for Canada’s future in the next 150 years, and Canadians agree. As part of the What’s Now What’s Next campaign launched by Next Canada, a Toronto-based national non-profit agency helping advance Canadian innovation and entrepreneurship, it asked 75 tech experts to predict the evolution of technology in Canada in the future. Tech experts were asked to envision the future in the next 10-25 years, 75-100 years, and in 150 years in varying sectors included education, banking, transportation, retail, and food.

Ideas like hospitals being fully automated and artificial intelligence being integrated as part of the education system were some of the suggestions mentioned by experts. The other component of the campaign involved surveying 1,200 Canadians about the predictions to get the pulse of their sentiments on whether or not these were things to be excited about or feared, or whether it could truly become a reality, said Jon French, the director of marketing and communications at Next Canada. "When we put the predictions to them and said ’hey do you think this is plausible?’, for example, one prediction that there would be one global currency in the next 50 years and 53 per cent of Canadians ... said they could believe it - that was surprising," said French. "The arrival of autonomous cars, airplanes, and watercrafts were also mentioned and over half of the Canadians surveyed said that within the next 10 years you’re going to see not only driverless vehicles, but things like car ownership

will no longer exist. It was interesting." Sixty-nine per cent of Canadians believe entertainment will be mainly experienced through virtual reality. According to French, Canada is primed and ready to be the leader in the wave of technology that will help better the lives of Canadians and has the opportunity to "compete with the best countries in the world". "I think because of Canada’s really strong education system and foundation, where we have one of the most highly-educated and diverse workforces on the planet, there are a bunch of areas where we really are taking the lead," he said. "There’s a huge opportunity for Canada to take a step forward from a country that’s done really well in education and research and the science side and to start commercializing on this and turn that research into businesses, which will create jobs for Canadians and lead the way on the technology front." Stepping back in time at Todmorden Mills Restored Helliwell House and Regency Cottage set to reopen on Saturday CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com From the air raid warning posted on the front door in its colourful kitchen, to the half-knitted army-green sock lying beside a 70-year-old newspaper in its cosy parlour - to walk through this newly restored historic cottage nestled in the Don Valley is to be transported back in time to wartime Toronto. And that, said Ulana Baluk, is just what she and her staff at Todmorden Mills were aiming for when they decided to return the City of Toronto heritage site’s circa-1850s Regency Cottage to its 1944 state. "I think people especially drawn to the 1940s restoration, because people still remember their grandparents’ homes from that time," Baluk, the administrator of Todmorden Mills, said of the Regency Cottage project - one of two historic house restorations recently completed and set to reopen to the public at Todmorden this weekend. "Wartime Toronto was such an interesting time in terms of women’s roles, but what made 1944 even more compelling for us was that we had a small prisoner of war camp at the time in what is now our back parking lot." To learn more about the fascinating back stories behind both Regency Cottage and Helliwell House, Baluk said all are invited to attend the historic houses’ official reopening Saturday, July 15 from noon to 4 p.m. at Todmorden Mills, 67 Pottery Rd. The free celebration will include performances by the Alias Dance Project and musician Mike Ford, an Invitation to the Spirit by Jacqui Lavalley, as well as heritage food sampling, crafts for kids, and, of course, tours of the recently restored historic houses. To give the Regency

Justin Greaves/Metroland

Top, historical interpreters, Danielle Jewinski (left) and Dana Fragomeni look out the window of one of two historic homes at Todmorden Mills Heritage Site that have been newly restored to the 1890s and 1940s. Todmorden Mills is hosting an official re-opening of the historic houses on July 15.

Cottage restoration a genuinely authentic feel, Baluk said Todmorden Mills staff conducted an oral history project with Bellamy family descendant Helen Brookfield, who lived at the cottage be-

tween 1921 and 1952. "She had to live there during the war years and our interview with her really guided us in what the rooms were like, who was in the family during that time period, and what

went on in the general community at the same time," Baluk said, noting that Brookfield’s dad worked at the nearby brick works during the Second World War, while her sisters worked at a nearby

candy factory. While Baluk was able to turn to one of its wartime inhabitants for help with the detailed restoration of Regency Cottage, the research required to restore the circa 1838 Helliwell

House to its 1890s condition - complete with wooden ice box, kerosene lamps, and replica carpets - took a bit more digging. Originally built by brewer William Helliwell for his young family in 1838, the two-storey home was sold off following an 1847 fire that destroyed the brewery and used thereafter as a rental property for the workers at the nearby paper mill and brick works. "We decided the 1890s would be a really interesting time to interpret for Helliwell House, because it was a period of rapid industrialization in the city, the brick works were open, and the paper mill was still functioning," Baluk said, noting they had to wade through old historic city directories, census records and tax roll assessments to determine who lived in Helliwell House at the time. "From those, we were able to determine that the house was treated as two separate dwellings, with the two-storey portion rented by the foreman (of either the paper mill or brick works), while the other side was rented by itinerant workers." That information, she added, allowed Todmorden staff to form a composite of what those households would have looked like in the 1890s and figure what stories they could tell based on it - an interpretation of a middle-class lateVictorian Toronto life on one side, and the story of late 19th century seasonal workers on the other. "And that," she said, "was a story we could tell that was really different from those of the other Toronto museums. We were pleased with that." "We were sad we didn’t get the grant, but just not doing it was not an acceptable solution," said Trish O’Reilly-Brennan, the founding and past chair of the association, during an interview at Phin Park this week. "Art in the Park is a signature Pocket event." Lori Zucchiatti-O’Neill, the group’s fundraising coordinator, said the multidisciplinary, drop-in program aligns well with what they stand for.

"We were sad we didn’t get the grant, but just not doing it was not an acceptable solution.” - Trish O’Reilly-Brennan, PCA "Part of our mission is to make the community stronger and more vibrant and Art in the Park does just that," said ZucchiattiO’Neill, who has lived in the neighbourhood for twoand-a-half years. "We had to think and act quickly." A GoFundMe campaign was launched to raise $2,000 for the program was launched. Last week, that goal was met. As for Silverberg, he’s overjoyed Art in Phin Park is going ahead this summer. He said the support shows neighbours value art and creative activities in the community that bring people together. "I’m blown away," smiled Silverberg, who ini-

tially approached the PCA with the concept for the program. As much as Silverberg loves making art with kids and adults, the summertime contract is also an important source of income. The PCA intends to apply for the funding next year. Organizers will also be exploring ways to come up with other sources of income so they don’t get stuck if the grant doesn’t come through. Art in Phin Park will run in August, Mondays to Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Phin Park, 115 Condor Ave. Visit http://www.thepocket.ca/events/art-inphin-park/ for more details.

Gun violence in Riverside, Riverdale under investigation A criminal investigation is now underway following a series of late evening gun shots in the Riverdale and Riverside areas in recent weeks. "Although thankfully no one has been hurt, this has been extremely upsetting and unsettling for everyone," wrote Ward 30 Councillor Paula Fletcher in a July 7 letter to her con-

stituents. In the note, the Toronto-Danforth representative said officers from 55 Division have been investigating and speaking with residents who have experienced damage to their homes and cars as well as to potential witnesses. Special late-night patrols have been installed as well as an increased

presence throughout the day. Anyone with questions or information can contact Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222TIPS (8477), online at www.222tips.com, or text TOR and your message to CRIMES (274637). Tips can also be left on Facebook at https:// www.facebook.com/TorontoPolice.

East end crosswalk safety project underway Officers from 55 Division have recently been focusing their efforts on traffic safety around crosswalks. The special project, called "Stop & Wait", was initiated in response to a high number of pedestrian fatalities in 2015 and 2016 and the laws that have come into place as a result requir-

ing drivers and cyclists to stop and yield at pedestrian crossovers and school crossings with a crossing guard. Project Stop & Wait involved both education and enforcement. In 55 Division, there are 51 school crossings, 32 elementary schools, nine high

schools, and a total of 18,704 students. In order for a crossing guard to be installed at an intersection, and in-depth traffic study is required. For more information, call 416-808-5538 and speak with 55 Division’s school crossing guard coordinator.

EDITORIAL | OPINION

• OUR VIEW •

ABOUT US

We must learn to adapt to game-changers It’s long been said the only constant is change. All one needs to do is examine the pace at which new technologies are altering our daily lives to recognize that the age-old phrase is truer now, perhaps, than it has ever been. Consider that in a relatively brief span of time, hailing a taxi, booking a hotel reservation over the phone, and renting a movie at the video store have all become things of the past. Instead, more and more people get a lift via Uber, secure a place to stay through any number of hotel booking websites or Airbnb, and rely on internetbased video streaming services, such as Netflix, to watch films or catch up with their favourite television shows. If you think those innovations are something, buckle up, because many more are on the way. These socalled game-changers are heralds of what professor Klaus Schwab, the founder and executive chairperson of the World Economic Forum, calls "the fourth Industrial Revolution". What will the next wave of innovations look like? Well, experts envision being able to receive your online purchases via drone delivery, having the power to buy plans for an item and 3D-printing it at home, and even visiting a store from the comfort of your home thanks to virtual reality. You can also expect the "sharing economy" to not only persevere, but increase in the future. As much as many of those developments sound exciting, they, and others, possess the potential to cause substantial disruptions for existing industries. For example, the trend toward increased automation will directly impact many of us, with the Brookfield Institute for Innovation + Entrepreneurship estimating nearly 42 per cent of the tasks Canadians are currently paid to do could be at risk of being replaced by technology. As with any seismic shift, one can view what’s coming as a crisis or an opportunity. And, while it won’t always be easy, it’s likely best to take the latter view as resisting change of this magnitude is most likely futile anyway. "One can decry the loss of the old world, but we’re all having to adapt," professor and former provost at York University Sheila Embleton says. "When we link the best of the old with the new, we will end up with something that’s altogether better." She’s right. We can’t always control what changes and challenges will be thrown at us, but we can control how we react. Like the dinosaurs, our choices will essentially boil down to evolve or else.

Doomed strip plaza is part of a big change Toronto’s suburbs were built around strip plazas, and those plazas, practical though they are, have begun to die. In Northwest Scarborough’s Bridletowne area, a developer is knocking down a nine-unit commercial building and building a stack of 60 townhomes where it stood. "The strip mall is a vision that needs to be replaced," says Marco VanderMaas, the project’s Dutch-born architect. VanderMaas sees BT Towns as part of a wave of intensification that must come. With many city neighbourhoods priced out of reach, there’s a "missing middle" for housing, a gap between detached houses and "boxes in the sky," he

MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto says. Meanwhile, land costs for strip malls are up, and many see less business. People drive farther to get their bag of milk. Suburban councillors are often hostile to townhouse developments, because older constituents usually are. Sometimes, clumps of towns bordering single-family subdivisions are accepted grudgingly,

since mid-rise condos seem more threatening. The now-doomed plaza on Bridletowne Circle seems normal enough, with a variety store, cleaners, other useful shops. Unsurprisingly, residents wrote to oppose the project. Wouldn’t this worsen traffic, some asked. A decade ago, longtime Bridletowne homeowners hit the roof when condo towers were proposed nearby at the listless Bridlewood Mall. But it was clear the area, greying and suddenly classified as a "priority" neighbourhood, needed new blood. VanderMaas knows people used to Bridletowne’s layout - single-family homes and towers - will think BT Towns too crowded. He argues the units,

with one to three bedrooms, will bring in more families, and there’s room. Also, neighbourhoods change, and mindsets do too. "I always think more neighbours means a more vital community," says VanderMaas, a devotee of the urbanist writer Jane Jacobs. "Is everybody gonna love it? No." VanderMaas argues citizens are obliged to say what they do want, not just what they don’t. Otherwise, he says, they’re hurting their neighbourhood’s evolution. BT Towns got their zoning amendment. Many like it may follow. Reach Edges columnist Mike Adler at madler@insidetoronto.com

When you throw the wrong items (like clothing, curtains, blankets, etc.) in your Blue Bin, they can get tangled in sorting machines, damage equipment and cause workplace injuries at the recycling facility. Last year, an estimated 45,000 tonnes of garbage was incorrectly put into recycling. That’s a big problem you can help fix.
