Metropolitan church names new senior pastor Rev. Jeff Rock officially starts his duties at Riverdale-based church on Oct. 1 With a puff of pink smoke, the Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto has begun a new chapter in its 44-year history. Following a rigorous and thorough selection process, Rev. Jeff Rock was selected by the diverse congregation as its new senior pastor earlier this month. Much like the tradition of the Vatican’s papal elections, the Riverdale-based church confirmed the news with coloured smoke emanating from its chimney. Rock, who is presently a

minister at Gaetz Memorial United Church in Red Deer, Alta., preached for the first time as MCC Toronto’s senior pastor elect that evening. The 33-year-old Sudbury native is set to officially begin his duties at MCC Toronto on Sunday, Oct. 1 and will be preaching for the first time as the church’s new senior pastor the following Sunday. Rock will be visiting Toronto a number of times between now and then. "This congregation has a 44-year legacy of building an inclusive community, city, country and world. But the work here is not done," Rock, who holds a bachelor of science degree in microbiology and immunology and a masters of divinity, said in a July 9 release. "I am honoured to have

been elected to lead the next generation of social justice and faith at Canada’s most progressive Christian church." For the first four months, Rock will be working closely with MCC Toronto’s retiring pastor, Rev. Dr. Brent Hawkes. Hawkes, who is marking 40 years of service in 2017, will preach for the final time at MCC Toronto’s Christmas Eve service. His retirement party is set to take place on Oct. 19 at the Carlu. "The search for my successor was a patient, transparent and inclusive process and I am so proud of the result," Hawkes said in the communiqué. "We had a very diverse pool of applicants. I am thrilled to pass my life’s work on to Jeff. You could say I’m tickled pink."

Women lost husbands five months apart JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com

Joanna Lavoie/Metroland

Six-year-old Brooklyn, left, mom Sarah Keast, and daughter Piper, 2, along with Alexie Landry and daughter Adeline, who is turning two in August, have become close friends since the passing of their husbands last year. She heard about the death of her friend’s husband on social media."I just felt like I had to do something," said Campbell, a mother of two who has lived near Danforth and Chester avenues for about five years. "I knew the community had rallied around Sarah so I thought it could be a good thing to (start a meal train) for Alexie." Campbell said she did it because anyone could be in Landry’s shoes and offering a grieving widow a bit of a reprieve from cooking to focus on other things was the least she could do. Like Chan, Campbell said she’s moved by the community’s kindness. "There’s something very special about the east part of the city. People are

very genuine, I find, and willing to help each other out," she said. Both Keast and Landry received daily meals for about four months following the death of their husbands, who both did most of the cooking." After Kevin’s death I couldn’t think straight. To not have to cook for two children made all the difference," Keast said, calling the meals a "really lovely, a little surprise every day." Landry, who lives in the Beach near Queen Street East and Coxwell Avenue, also appreciated the help and encouragement."Not having to deal with cooking for that amount of time was really helpful," she said. "Every night there

would be a full meal in the little fridge on the porch. Sometimes there would be cards or a note." Aside from providing meals, the local women have also received gift certificates, monetary donations, free babysitting, legal advice, help around the house, and more. Members of the East Toronto Young Mothers Facebook group were especially supportive of their young widows. "I’ve always wanted ETYM to be the village many of us need and don’t have. It’s spectacular and humbling and emotional to see it come to fruition in some ways," said Emily Weinmann, the group’s creator. "When I had heard about both of them, I knew

that reaching out to the group would mean everything. And I think other people did too, which means they are feeling the community of ETYM, and that is really something." Weinmann said she received several messaged from people wanting to help Keast and Landry, a gesture she said "spoke volumes about how much we care about each other, despite often having never even met." Keast said despite having gone through an awful time some "really beautiful things" have happened in her life. "All of this really confirmed for me that people are good. They just really wanted to help," she said.Landry said her personal tragedy has allowed her

to be a witness to the community’s amazing spirit. "You think when you live in a big city you’re not going to get that kind of compassion but in the east end it’s like a small town almost," she said. "It touched my heart in such a profound way. I will never forget that. I can never pay them all back but I will pay it forward." Because of their similar circumstances, Keast and Landry have become close friends and confidantes. "It’s a terrible club to belong to but we’re happy we’re in it together," Keast shared during a recent interview at her home.Landry agreed. "It’s just nice to have someone who totally knows what you’re going through," she smiled.

East Toronto residents Sarah Keast and Alexie Landry feel indebted to the community for helping them through one of the worst tragedies of their lives. On Aug. 7, 2016, Keast, a mother of two young daughters, lost her husband Kevin to a heroin overdose, while Landry, who also has a young daughter, found her husband Jamie unresponsive the morning of Dec. 24, 2016. In the days and weeks following the death of their husbands, scores of friends, neighbours, and kind-hearted strangers came forward to help the young mothers in myriad ways. Sara Chan, Keast’s longtime friend, organized a meal train program where people who wanted to help out could sign up to prepare supper for the young family. "It all came together really quickly," said Chan, a mother of two who lives just a few blocks from Keast, near Coxwell and Danforth avenues. "It was really touching. There was so much willingness to help." Another friend set up a crowdfunding campaign, which raised $30,000 for Keast and her girls. "The idea was for the kids’ education and for Sarah to just have something to fall back on," said Chan, who said the outpouring of kindness has taught her to be more mindful of others in her community. "All of this was going on without Sarah’s knowledge. Lots of complete strangers offered to help out. It was so sweet. To me, it shows Toronto is smaller than we think." Alex Campbell attended law school with Landry more than a decade ago.

They make up the a cappella duo, FreePlay, which has performed at festival around the world. "It’s nice to take what we do around the world and bring it home to Toronto," said Bell, who along with Sankaran, has endeavoured to book a wide range of modern a cappella acts for this weekend’s event. "We’re trying to bring our understanding of international a cappella festivals to Beaches Jazz." This includes barbershop singers, vocal jazz, world music, contemporary pop music, and original compositions. Many of the groups performing in Beaches Jazz also call east Toronto home notably Hampton Avenue, Retrocity, The Watch, Countermeasure, and Cadence. "We’re providing a unique type of programming they don’t typically

JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com The art of making music with only the human voice will be fêted this weekend at the Beaches International Jazz Festival. For the third consecutive year, SING! The Toronto Vocal Arts Festival has partnered with Beaches Jazz to present three days of toe-tapping a cappella concerts. The fun will take place Friday, July 21 to Sunday, July 23 at Woodbine Park, 1695 Queen St. E. This year, Dylan Bell and his wife Suba Sankaran are programming the stage. The couple are the new co-artistic directors of SING! Toronto, which is now in its sixth year. Bell and Sankaran, who have lived in the DanforthCoxwell area for more than 17 years, are also performing this weekend.

offer at the Beaches Jazz Festival," he said Bell, a multi-instrumentalist who has performed at the festival several times over the years with different bands. Bell, who has worked as a professional musicians for 25 years, said in recent

years a cappella has grown in popularity due to the success of the Glee franchise as well as and the reality show, The Sing Off. The Pitch Perfect movie series also helped raise the profile of the diverse musical genre. "A cappella has gone

from being a little niche market to a household name and an internationally celebrated genre of music," he said during a recent interview at a local café. "People just love human beings singing. It’s the most intimate and di-

rect form of music making." Bell said a cappella also has a universal appeal and is enjoyed by everyone because it’s an art form that has been around for centuries and it’s done worldwide. "People feel a special connect with a cappella," he smiled. As for those who perform and create a cappella music, Bell said it’s an amazing way to make connections and form relationships. Toronto’s a cappella community is a tight-knit one and many of the groups performing this weekend at Beach Jazz have sung together for more than 20 years, while others have only recently started performing together. Extend timeline for minimum wage hike Committee hearings are underway on the province’s proposal to raise the minimum wage in Ontario to $15 by 2019. We don’t envy its members. These hearings, to be held across the province, are sure to attract passionate, reasoned, and even desperate responses from stakeholders on both sides of this issue. The government plans to hike the minimum wage, now set to rise with inflation from $11.40 an hour to $11.60 in October, up to $14 on Jan. 1, 2018, and to $15 the following year. Nearly nine per cent of Ontario workers are paid the minimum wage, the second highest total of any province. On the labour side, we can expect support for the hike, with advocates citing an improvement in living standards and an anticipated boost to economic activity. (Economic activity is increasingly critical, as Statistics Canada data shows more than half of the country’s economy is driven by consumer spending). Proponents of the hike can also point to a National Employment Law Project report in the U.S., which revealed that minimum wage hikes are likely to create more jobs than they kill. Official government data, gathered from between 1938 and 2009, in which there were 22 increases to the minimum wage, found that 68 per cent of the time, the employment rate had actually risen 12 months after the wage hike. On the business side, many appear alarmed by the timeline for the change, warning it will cause job losses, discourage investors and worse. Fanning the flames are additional proposed reforms – equal pay for part-time workers, increased vacation benefits and expanded personal-emergency leave. "Many Ontario employers, especially small businesses, are now considering closing their business because they do not have the capacity to successfully manage such reforms," read a statement by a coalition including the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, Restaurants Canada and the Canadian Franchise Association. “There is no way to absorb and adjust to a 32 per cent hit in less than 18 months.” The group’s rhetoric is sufficiently severe that one wonders if the coalition’s prophecy of economic constriction will become self-fulfilling, should the proposals be adopted. In any case, this is a rare occasion in which both sides of the argument are persuasive and it will be fascinating to see the committee’s recommendations. Perhaps the best outcome would see the province extend the time frame for the wage increase sufficiently to relive some of the pressure felt by the business community.

Handling of land deal speaks well for council It speaks well of the members of the current term of council, that it’s taken this long for something like the Arrow Road land deal to emerge. The attempts by the Toronto Parking Authority to purchase the property at 1111 Arrow Rd., for what seems to be considerably more - $2.6 million more than it ought to be worth, almost feels like a throwback to pre-millennial times. That, older Torontonians may remember, was the age of MFP, the computer leasing company that convinced Toronto councillors and bureaucrats to sign a lease for desktop computers that wound up costing tens of millions of dollars more than they thought it

DAVID NICKLE The City would. There was a public inquiry - the Bellamy Inquiry, as it became known and the report that Madame Justice Denise Bellamy wrote reads like a John Grisham novel, as a lobbyist for the Mississauga-based company insinuated himself with senior staff and at least one wellplaced politician. The revelations shook

the city and ended careers, and the simple fact of what happened cost Toronto taxpayers significantly,. The parking authority deal may or may not be the same sort of thing. But here is an encouraging note: we are likely to find out, one way or another. The contrast between how Toronto Council dealt with the MFP scandal in 2002 and 2003, and the way that Toronto Council has dealt with the potential scandal at the parking authority is striking. Then, councillors were locked in a genuine debate about whether to dig deep into the problems with the computer lease that city manager Shirley Hoy re-

ported on. It got a bit ugly. This time out, councillors wasted no time. When the confidential report from Toronto’s auditor general came to the Audit Committee, its chair Stephen Holyday immediately made it public. When the matter came to Council, councillors spent the lion’s share of the meeting going over it, before immediately suspending the parking authority’s board and putting it into the hands of city staff. When the new board met, City Manager and Chair Peter Wallace put staff on administrative leave, and launched an investigation. It is good to see the impact of lessons learned well.

Festival celebrates South Asian culture JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com The sights, sounds, colours, and flavours of South Asia will be celebrated this weekend during the 15th annual Festival of South Asia. The popular free community event, which organizers expect will draw upwards of 200,000 people, is put on by the Gerrard India Bazaar Business Improvement Area (BIA). This year’s festivities, which will be held along Gerrard Street East between Coxwell and Glenside avenues, will include a cricket open house, a beer garden, Bollywood pop-up mela (celebration), a yoga studio, a culture alley, and a kids’ zone, among other things. On Saturday, July 22 at 10:30 a.m., revelers can also enjoy a storytelling event called "What’s Your Bazaar

Memory?" at the Gerrard/ Ashdale Library at 1432 Gerrard St. E. As always, the festival will include dynamic musical performances, artists, entertainment for all ages, tasting tables, sidewalk sales, henna art, and more. "During the two-day festival, we will be showcasing music, dance, food, and the essence of South Asia. There will also be lots of bargains and take-aways," said Chand Kapoor, chair of the Gerard India BIA, in a July 14 release. "Our mission is to revive the legacy of the Gerrard India Bazaar (Business Improvement Area) that thrives along Gerrard Street and to celebrate and promote South Asian culture and diversity. I am sure that everyone will have a great time with their families." Tasneem Bandukwala,

the BIA’s manager, said one of the key goals of the festival is to "bring the Bazaar back" and give local merchants and restaurateurs an "opportunity to display their unique products and services". "Our vision is to continue to inspire, educate, and captivate audiences; to continue to flourish our "Little India", whilst captivating an audience and leading us all to unite as Canadians," she wrote in the news release. The TD Festival of South Asia, which organizers tout as the largest of its kind in North America, will run Saturday, July 22 and Sunday, July 23 from noon to 11 p.m. daily. Metroland Media Toronto is sponsoring the event. Visit http://www.gerrardindiabazaar.com/ for more information.
