Graphic anti-abortion flyers upset east-end residents

uReport the news JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Flyers containing graphic images of aborted fetuses have recently been showing up in
east Toronto mailboxes leaving some area residents shocked, upset, and even incensed. In recent weeks, there have also been a number of pro-life demonstrations at busy inter-
sections in Riverdale and East York where those taking part carried large posters with similar images of unborn babies and strong slogans. The Canadian Centre for Bio-
Ethical Reform (CCBER), a Calgary-based pro-life group focused on "making the killing of pre-born human beings un-

thinkable", is behind the activity. During a recent interview, its outreach director Devorah Gilman said the CCBER chooses to take this jarring approach because it is the "truth of what happens to pre-born children in abortion." "There is no other accurate way to portray abortion to the Canadian public," she said, adding her organization feels abortion is a human rights violation and using "victim photography" is the best way to get their message across. "We choose to do this because we find it to be the most effective way to save human lives." Long-time Riverdale resident Keiley Abbat who received one of the flyers in her mailbox is livid. She took issue with both the pamphlet’s graphic imagery as well as some of its language, notably when it comes to pregnancies caused by sexual assault or those that could put the
mother’s life in danger. In both cases, the CCBEF maintains its anti-abortion stance. "I am absolutely angry this is being distributed," Abbat said. "If someone is pro-life, fine, their choice, but don’t be shoving it down my throat accompanied by graphic photos." Abbat, who is one of dozens of area residents who recently took to social media to express their outrage, said she’s especially concerned about the flyer getting into the wrong hands, specifically those of children. Joyce Arthur, executive director of the Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada, which is the country’s only national political pro-choice advocacy group, says the distribution of graphic antiabortion flyers and demonstrations where protesters are carrying posters with dead fetuses is "harmful" to the community. "It’s very distressing or even tormenting to anyone who had an abortion

An anti-abortion pamphlet is being delivered around Riverdale. or is considering having one," said Arthur, adding children often get their hands on this literature and don’t know how to process it. "It kind of takes away parents’ rights to talk to their kid about pro-choice or pro-life. It’s a gross invasion of their privacy." Arthur, who said free speech does not extend to forcing a message on a captive audience, urged anyone affected by the leaflet or the recent antiabortion demonstrations
to visit her organization’s website at http:// www.arcc-cdac.ca/action/take-action-againstaborted-fetus-images.pdf. Ward 30 Councillor Paula Fletcher said she’s received "many" complaints from constituents about the anti-abortion activity in the area. "I know people are very concerned, really upset, and quite affronted. People in Ward 30 and the east end are very pro-choice," the Toronto-Danforth representative said during a
recent interview. "It’s not typical of our ward and it’s not people from our ward. These are people that are paid. This is their summer job." Fletcher said she’s looking into whether the CCBER hired these individuals with funds it received from the federal summer job fund. Gilman said this summer her organization did not receive any Canada Summer Jobs 2017 funding. "This is a well-organized, well-heeled, antiabortion machine," said Fletcher, who has contacted the city’s legal staff to see what can be done to stop the distribution of the flyers and the demonstrations. "We’re seeing if there’s some kind of legal solution," she said. Various legal steps have been taken in other Canadian cities to limit this kind of imagery. Recently in Calgary, Alberta, bylaws have been changed to stop anti-abortion flyers from being distributed to residents’
mailboxes labelled with "no flyer" signs. Fletcher said she feels the recent anti-abortion activity is connected to the Ontario government’s plan to start covering the full cost of the abortion pill Mifegymiso on Aug. 10. "I think it’s a response to the fact that the abortion pill will be available shortly. They’ve lost a lot of ground, these people," she said. "This is their last gasp." Gilman denied that charge, adding her organization has been canvassing throughout the city for the past couple of years on an ongoing basis. "We choose different parts of Toronto to reach with our message. We’re hoping to continue to show the truth of what’s happening during abortion as long as abortion exists in Canada," she said. "The reason we’re ramping this up is because abortion is happening, not because of a specific method."

Cause of fire that killed Riverdale family remains unclear Family killed in massive Christmas Eve blaze JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com
Photo courtesy of Osler, Hoskin and Harcourt
Geoff Taber, his wife Jacquie and sons Scott and Andrew died in a cottage fire in the Peterborough area on Christmas Eve. Lead investigator Mike Ross said it took firefighters several hours to douse the
blaze. Ross said the massive blaze resulted in the cottage’s roof collapsing and
most of the structure’s interior being destroyed. And while there were a
number of wall-mounted smoke alarms in the dwelling at 614 Hamilton Dr. in Douro-Dummer Township, Everden noted none were located near the living room area, central stairwell, or bedrooms. "We believe this may have played a role in the late detection (of the fire)," he said. Everden said he feels the lack of smoke alarms in these key areas is the main reason Geoff Taber, Jacqui Gardner and their sons Scott, 15, and Andrew, 13, were unable to escape safely from the structure before it was too late. Ontario Fire Marshal and Chief of Emergency Management Ross Nichols reinforced this point, saying "Early warning of a fire in your home significantly increases the likelihood of survival."
insidetoronto.com
The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management has concluded its investigation into an immense Christmas Eve fire at a Peterborough-area cottage that claimed the lives of a Riverdale family. Investigator Scott Evenden provided more details about the Dec. 24, 2016 fire during a recent press conference. Evenden said the team, which included fire investigators and forensic engineers who worked in partnership with the Office of the Chief Coroner, the Onta-
rio Provincial Police, and the Douro-Dummer Township Fire Department, undertook a systemic process that involved aiming to identify both the origin of the blaze and its ignition source(s) as well as analyzing the fire pattern and examining the two-storey cottage’s utilities. In the end, the OFMEM was able to ascertain that the fire, which started at about 4 a.m., originated in the ground floor living room area of the open-concept cottage, but why and how it happened remains unclear. "The cause of this fire is classified as undetermined," said Everden, who said the fire, which spread through an open stairwell at the centre of the residence to the second level, has been deemed accidental and is not suspicious.

• OUR VIEW •
ABOUT US
The city’s missing people need our help There are a lot of missing people in Toronto. We know, because we write up every police report and share online in the hopes word will spread and that person will be found. Our social feeds are sometimes chock full of missing person stories just due to the volume. It’s a service we justify by imagining what loved ones are going through, not knowing if their child, parent, spouse, or friend is safe. We’re an effective channel of communication and we hope getting word out there fast will mean someone somewhere will notice something, send in a tip, or better, report that they’ve been located. In the best-case scenario, we’re having to update the story soon after publishing because the person’s been found. In one recent incident, a husband apparently went out for an extended period of time without his phone and his wife panicked. Those updates are a relief to publish. Better to be safe than sorry. We’d like to thank our online followers for sharing these stories and photos. Mostly, these are published online at Insidetoronto.com and shared on our Facebook and Twitter page. Sharing with your networks helps get the word out quickly, and time is of the essence in getting people located and home safe. Domingos Martins, the 83-year-old with Alzheimer’s, was miraculously found alive last week after being missing for five days. His family made the search very public and made several appeals for help, even offering up a reward. He was eventually located trapped between a fence and a wall, and was taken to hospital in critical condition. We’ve reported several times on the story of a 31-yearold Duane Montaque who lives with autism and regularly goes missing from the home where he lives with his mother in Scarborough. Once, he stowed away on a train to reach Montreal. Earlier this summer, someone found him in Ottawa. As part of our Sunday Reads online series, once a month we also profile a historic missing child case. Though it’s been years - sometimes decades - those families and the police investigating still hold out hope. When you see these stories, have a read, examine the photos, and share with those you know. The police desperately need tips and need to act fast, so your assistance may be what makes that crucial bit of difference.

City finally unseals Toronto apartment towers Toronto’s tower-in-thepark apartments are products of The Boom, the decade bridging the 1960s and 1970s which saw 140,000 units built. Some sprouted in the suburban middle of nowhere - Rexdale, rural North York, East Scarborough, with big surface parking lots and lawns. Built when even nursing home patients were expected to have cars, they sometimes assigned each apartment two spots. The towers were "sealed in a time warp for 50 years," says Greater Toronto Apartment Association president Daryl Chong. No mixed uses were allowed. Tenants were expected to drive everywhere. Towers aged as the city grew around them. There
MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto were poorer tenants, fewer cars. Enter Vinod Soman, urban planner. He’s installing a small grocery store in a Kipling Avenue highrise, expecting to start interior work this week. "Our target is to open this year," Soman says. What made this possible is Residential Apartment Commercial (RAC) zoning, which the city, after years of

delay, launched last month. Finally, if landlords agree, dead spaces in more than 400 modernist towers containing 80,000 units, all pre-1985, can become tutoring centres, daycares, or nail salons. Their lawns or lots can sport outdoor markets. Tenants, if fortunate, may finally get conveniences downtown condominium dwellers take for granted. The closest supermarket to the Rexdale tower Soman’s working on is 900 metres away. Most tenants of the building and its twin take a car there; some take taxis, he says. Soman sees a testing ground. Backed by partners, he’s interviewing tenants, many Middle Eastern or East Indian, about the products he’ll sell.
Some towers had tuck shops, but with interior doors. They were designed for tenants alone, often stocking junk food. Soman wants to sell fresh vegetables, quality stuff, in a shop open to the public. "Let’s hope it works," he says. Around Pape and Cosburn, Jane and Finch, Kipling in Rexdale, Lawrence and Orton Park in Scarborough, East York’s Taylor Massey and Thorncliffe Park neighbourhoods, and Oriole in Don Mills, the city will approach owners, suggesting what RAC zoning can do for them. Entrepreneurs can also knock on management doors, perhaps tenants themselves already "making something cool, exciting or tasty" upstairs, Chong says.

Discover My Secret... My wife and I discovered that real independence means having the freedom to do what we want, when we want, without being tied to household chores and expenses. True independence means fine dining with friends and enjoying retirement in an active community of like-minded adults with a staff as dependable as family. Our new independence means less worry and more freedom. The real secret? We chose a Delmanor community.
