Tom Affleck and Sarah Kerr travel to Nicaragua several times a year with their charitable organization SchoolBOX to build classrooms and hand out school supplies.
Couple helps change lives in Nicaragua JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Sarah Kerr and Tom Affleck have a special affinity for the Central American nation of Nicaragua.
For the last 11 years, they’ve regularly visited the impoverished country to build classrooms and provide children with much-needed school supplies and books through their charitable organization, SchoolBOX.
Back in 2006, Affleck, who currently works as the entrepreneurial leader for Knox Presbyterian Church, was doing largescale development work in Nicaragua when one weekend he visited a friend in a rural area and
gifted some school supplies to some local children. It was a small but life-changing gesture that ultimately prompted him to create SchoolBOX, which was of-

City officials to immediately open temporary safe-injection sites JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com
Joanna Lavoie/Metroland
Harm reduction workers Matt Johnson, left, Zoe Dodd, and Nick Boyce at the unsanctioned pop-up supervised injection site at Moss Park. prompted the group to make this unorthodox move. "We just thought the time is now. We’ve got to just do it." Dodd said the Alliance chose to open its first temporary OPS at Moss Park as lots of users live in the area and could use more support. A Go Fund Me campaign (https://www.gofundme.com/torontooverdosepreventionsociety) has also been set up to help fund the harm reduction efforts. She said some of the $8,000 already raised may be used to open a second temporary overdose prevention site. "It would be nice to have five or six. We need them all over the city," said Dodd, who is the Hepatitis C coordinator at the South Riv-
erdale Community Health Centre (SRCHC) in Leslieville. "It’s a really vital and important service." On Monday, Toronto Public Health announced it would be opening three interim safe-injection sites immediately as work is being done on permanent sites at the SRCHC on Queen Street East, near Carlaw Avenue; the Parkdale Queen West Community Health Centre - Queen West site on Bathurst Street; and at the Works at Toronto Public Health’s building on Victoria Street, near Yonge-Dundas Square. The temporary sites would open at the same three locations. Part of Toronto’s Overdose Action Plan, the program aims to provide a safer and hygienic environment for people to inject
drugs under the supervision of qualified staff. The plan, which was adopted by the board of health in March 2017, also includes educating people about how to recognize an opioid overdose and how to respond, including administering naloxone, the medication used to block the effects of opioids. Since early June, Toronto Public Health has trained more 700 staff members from six city divisions and 250-plus community agencies, and since the start of this year has distributed over 1,000 naloxone kits to people who use drugs. The permanent sites are scheduled to open by the end of the year. Nick Boyce, who works in harm reduction and drug policy, has given of his time and expertise to help
run the pop-up OPS since it opened. Like many, he said something must be done now. "Something should have been done yesterday. We’ve been calling on this for a long time," said Boyce, who works for the Ontario HIV and Substance Use Program. He said politicians like Canada’s Health Minister Jane Philpott need to be brave and push to decriminalize drugs. "We’re at a tipping point. We need a different approach," he said. "The pop-up isn’t a permanent solution but it might just make sense." Nancy Leff dropped by the Moss Park site Sunday evening to volunteer. A harm reduction peer support worker at St. Stephen’s Community House
in Kensington Market, Leff said she wanted to give her time to the program because too many people are dying unnecessarily. "I feel the government’s not concerned. They don’t care," she said, adding there seems to be a mentality that those on the fringes are somehow expendable. "Everybody has pasts and hopefully everyone can make it through to the other side with help and support." Leff, who said she lost two acquaintances this past week to drug overdoses, said it’s essential to expedite the development of the three approved supervised injection sites in Toronto. According to Toronto Public Health, from 2004 to 2015 there was a 73 per cent increase in overdose deaths in Toronto.

Members of a harm reduction coalition of volunteers from across the GTA were done seeing those they know and love die on the street from IV drug overdoses. Late Saturday afternoon, members and supporters of the Toronto Harm Reduction Alliance (THRA) took matters into their own hands and set up an unsanctioned pop-up overdose prevention site (OPS) at the south end of Moss Park. That first day, 15 people who use drugs stopped by the program. About 100 naloxone (a medication used to block the effects of opioids) kits were also handed out. On Sunday, two dozen people came out to safely inject. One person overdosed and was administered naloxone. So far, Toronto police are keeping a close eye on things, but are allowing the unapproved, unregulated program to stay open. Organizers are planning to operate the pop-up site for the time being. Harm reduction worker Zoe Dodd said over the last nine months, the THRA has taken part in and held numerous meetings on the pressing need to provide people who use drugs in Toronto with safe places to inject. On Aug. 10, about a dozen harm reduction workers attended a closed-door meeting with Toronto Mayor John Tory to once again discuss the city’s growing opioid crisis. Dodd was at that meeting and said her team was frustrated that no concrete, timely plans were put in place to address the problem. "We felt deflated. We felt there was a lack of action," she said, discussing what

ABOUT US
Be a tourist in your own backyard At 150, it’s safe to say that Canada has aged pretty well. It’s also safe to assume that most Canadians have a fairly decent grasp of their country; its diverse regions and cultures, and the landmarks and destinations that have become synonymous with travelling across our land. The majestic Rockies. The vast prairies. Thundering Niagara Falls. Historic Quebec City. Peggy’s Cove. You know them, but have you visited? Canadians like to travel, flocking to New York City, or Florida, or heading overseas to explore Paris or Rome. All worthy destinations. But is 2017 the year to explore a little closer to home? Many in the tourism industry certainly think so. Last fall, Lonely Planet chose Canada as its ’destination of the year’ for 2017. Earlier this year, the New York Times ranked Canada as its top travel destination. The reasons are many: a favourable exchange rate; safety concerns in major destinations in Europe; an endless variety of attractions that coincide with our year-long sesquicentennial celebration. Fun and cultural awareness aside, tourism is big business. Nearly 20 million international visitors came in 2016, with the majority, 13.9 million, coming from the U.S. To keep those intrepid travellers happy, fed and informed requires hundreds of thousands of jobs in the tourism sector, accounting for roughly 11 per cent of the total labour force. Generating $90 billion in total economic activity, tourism is good business as well as nation-building. So by all means hop on a plane or train and see the sights. But remember, some of the best-kept secrets are right around the corner. It’s often true that citizens of a particular city or area, having lived there for years, have never taken the time to actually be a tourist in their town. The CN Tower, Fort York, Kensington Market, all draw foreign visitors but may remain a mystery to folks literally around the corner. Don’t know what’s out there to see? Start with a visit to your local tourism office. There are a myriad of treasures in and around Toronto. Or check out one of the dozens of festivals or attractions in the city. From the CNE to Buskerfest to TIFF, thousands attend these events each year, but you wouldn’t have to look very hard to find a friend or neighbour who has never attended any of them. On a tight budget? Hop on a bike and see things you typically miss in a car. Find a free movie night at a local park. Head to your local library for free programs and events. Be a tourist in your own backyard. You’ll be happy you did.

A vibrant culture may be victim of city’s success One of the advantages of being a few steps behind the curve is that you get a warning before the precipitous drop. So it is, and often has been, with Toronto when held against other major world cities. For example, as our underfunded transit system teeters, New York City’s bigger and older one is in collapse. Watching that sort of thing go on elsewhere gives us urgency here. With that in mind, it might be wise to peer over the horizon and across the pond at another city on a different kind of brink: London. The U.K. capital is way ahead of Toronto on a different trajectory than public transit: raw wealth. Toronto’s until-just-now booming real estate market is nothing
DAVID NICKLE The City compared to the explosion in cost and wealth that’s happened in London. Housing has been priced out of any reasonable family budget, and that has led to an exodus. As reported in The Guardian earlier this month, people are leaving the city to the tune of 80,000 annually: both homeowners and renters. And, it’s not just people. The so-called "night" economy has taken a hit along

with that - because, as old common areas are redeveloped, so go the activities that might have taken place there. Culturally, the city is becoming sterile. It seems as though Toronto is on the same trajectory. Live music venues have been shuttering like a row of dominoes this year, as redevelopment pushed out some and untenable rent hikes pushed out others. And it’s not just concert venues. Dramatic shifts in property values are forcing softer cultural spots, like the venerable Eliot’s Bookstore on Yonge Street, to close down. It’s a side-effect of prosperity: a rising real estate tide raises all boats, and property taxes too. The House of Lords hair
salon, just a few doors down, is closing under similar pressures. Those places join Sam the Record Man, A & A Records and Tapes, HMV, and The World’s Biggest Bookstore among the chorus of destinations that at one point drew if not the world, then much of the country, to Toronto. It begs the question: how long can Toronto stay a cultural centre, with the culture gone from its centre? On Saturday, Aug. 19 at 1 p.m., a local park will be named in honour of the life-long Beach resident, who died on June 3, 2016 after a two-year battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Acton, who was 60 and known to many as Bobby, was a well-known, respected and skilled hock-

City facilities generating solar power The City of Toronto has recently installed two solar photovoltaic systems in Beaches-East York. A 488-panel system, which is connected to the Toronto Hydro electrical grid, is now set up at the Ted Reeve Community Arena, near Gerrard and Main streets. The total size of this sys-
tem is 130 kilowatts. Another solar PV system, measuring 10 kilowatts, has been installed at the Danforth/Coxwell Library. This system, which will also be linked to Toronto Hydro’s electrical grid, will consist of 28 solar panels. The Toronto Renewable Energy Office’s Environ-
ment and Energy Division, which has the mandate of installing renewable energy systems on all City buildings, where feasible, by 2020, is behind the projects. The City will be receiving revenue from the sale of the electricity generated by the systems for a period of 20 years via the province’s Feed-in Tariff program.

Tracks for the Eglinton Crosstown LRT project are now being installed. The province made the announcement Aug. 9 at the future site of the Mount Dennis Station and the LRT maintenance and storage facility, located near Weston Road and Eglinton Avenue West, where construction crews laid the first tracks. The 19-kilometre LRT line will connect Mount Dennis Station in the west end with Kennedy Station in the east end. It also includes a 10-kilometre underground portion between Keele Street and Laird Drive, and 25 stations and stops that will link to bus routes, three subway stations, three GO Transit lines and the Union Pearson Express, the news release added. Sarah Kerr (right) and SchoolBOX programs manager Jazmin Lopez distribute school supplies in Nicaragua in the spring of 2017.
SchoolBOX to build 100th classroom next spring l Continued from page 1
In 2009, SchoolBOX launched an Indigenous Youth Empowering Students program where Aboriginal youth from Canada could learn more about, embrace, and share their culture with others in an empowering way, while helping build a school for kids in Nicaragua. This year, the program titled SchoolBOX Canada will be building a library in Wabauskang First Nation in northwestern Ontario. In addition to the library project, a group of Indigenous youth from across Canada travelled to Nicaragua earlier this month on a cross-cultural exchange where they helped build classrooms and handed out school supplies. Last November, Affleck received the Governor General’s Meritorious Service Cross from former Gov. Gen. David Johnston for his work with SchoolBOX. A 10-day volunteer trip with SchoolBOX costs $1,500 U.S. and includes food and accommodation. Visit www.schoolbox.ca for more information.

ficially registered as a charity in 2007. "That small donation enabled two young girls to attend school," Kerr, SchoolBOX’s executive director, shared during a recent interview at their Beach Hill home. "It’s been so moving to see kids we’ve helped succeed in school, have a better future, break the cycle of poverty and follow their dreams." When SchoolBOX was founded, Kerr was working as a volunteer educator in Guyana. She met Affleck, who was from the same town of Almonte, Ont., and together they started directing their efforts to helping children in Nicaragua, which is the second poorest country in the western hemisphere after Haiti. In 2008, with a group of volunteers Kerr and Affleck headed back to Nicaragua for the first classroom build. Next spring, SchoolBOX will be building its 100th classroom. "We’ve got the work plan in place and we should be
breaking ground in March (2018) in the rural village of El Caracol," said Kerr, adding volunteers are always needed and welcome. "We’d love to invite friends and neighbours from this community to join us. It’s definitely lifechanging for you as an individual, but also a great thing to do as a family. It’s a different way to give." The couple along with team members travel back to Nicaragua two or three times a year for both classroom builds as well as to scope out new project possibilities. Kerr said SchoolBOX, which has the global mission of making education possible, gives volunteers and supporters a chance to directly see and experience how their generosity changes people’s lives by investing in communities. "What we are able to create is an opportunity for ordinary people to have a direct impact," she said. "In a place like Nicaragua, a $5 donation can have a positive impact on someone’s life. It can be the difference whether they stay in school or not."
