Dimitrios Antonopoulos’ now-thriving Greek restaurant chain boasts more than 50 locations nationwide CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com When Dimitrios (Jimmy the Greek) Antonopoulos first immigrated to Canada in 1963, he had no idea how he would put food on his own table, much less any inkling that he’d go on to make a name for himself by serving fresh and fast Greek cuisine to Canadians. As the youngest of six children born into a poor farming family in Nafplio, Greece, the now-78-yearold didn’t know a word of English. He had only a fourth grade education and little-to-no money to his name. But, what he did have in spades, said daughter Toula, was "grit and foresight." "He had the vision and the belief in himself to make it happen," she said of her father’s determination to build his Jimmy the Greek chain from the ground up - from a lone restaurant in downtown Toronto’s First Canadian Place to a thriving empire of quick-service restaurants. "I personally would never pack up and go to a country where I didn’t speak the language. It’s not in me, but for him, he had that spark - and Canada fuelled that flame for him. And for that, we are forever grateful (for) this country. Our heart and soul is definitely with Canada and always will be." When Antonopoulos first arrived in this country with his new bride, Helen, on his arm, the pair settled briefly in Montreal, where he worked making sandwiches at the local Woolworth’s cafeteria.

Dimitrios ’Jimmy’ Antonopoulos (foreground) and his daughter Toula Antonopoulos get behind the counter at their Jimmy the Greek food court restaurant at First Canadian Place, before the start of the lunch trade on Monday, Aug. 21. Upon the couple’s relocation to Toronto a few months later, he translated those new-found culinary skills first into work at a greasy spoon in Scarborough - where he learned to use a grill - and then at other local restaurants. "Wherever he was, whatever he could learn, he would just absorb," Toula said, recalling that at the time, her father was working three jobs just to make ends meet for his growing family, while Helen stayed home to raise Toula and her older sister, Tina. It was while working at a Boots pharmacy in the

late 1970s that Antonopoulos got his first big break by way of an arranged meeting with Phillip Reichmann, whose father and uncles were famous for developing Canary Wharf in London, the World Financial Center in New York City and First Canadian Place here in Toronto. After years of paying his dues behind various lunch counters in Toronto, Antonopoulos went to Reichmann seeking to fulfil his dream of starting up his own Greek restaurant in a recently opened, 1,500 sq. ft space at First Canadi-
an Place on King Street. The meeting was a success and Epikourion Restaurant opened in 1979. After a few slow years, the restaurant expanded - and by 1985, lunch-hour demand was so high that Antonopoulos was turning customers away because he simply couldn’t seat everyone in the small restaurant. And that, Toula said, was when Jimmy the Greek was born. "That’s when we got the opportunity to open a small outlet in the food court, and that helped with overflow customers from
Epikourion," she said, noting that customers not willing to wait for a table at the sit-down restaurant were simply referred down the hall to the food court, where they could access many of Epikourion’s fresh menu items - from chicken souvlaki and oven-baked potatoes and rice to roast lamb and gyros - in faster form at the newly opened Jimmy the Greek. Business at Jimmy the Greek immediately took off, as did franchise inquiries. Fast forward 32 years, and today, Jimmy the Greek boasts 54 franchises
across the country - including restaurants in Alberta, B.C. and Manitoba, as well as many right here in Toronto and the GTA. Meanwhile, that original flagship restaurant at First Canadian Place still serves an average lunchtime rush of 700 customers, according to longtime employee John Gravalos, who started working for Antonopoulos back in the Epikourion days. "I’ve been with Jimmy since 1986 - the guy’s amazing," he said. "I’ve been with him almost 32 years and not even once have we gotten in a fight. He’s like my father." While Antonopoulos lists "good food and good service" as the secret to Jimmy the Greek’s longlasting success, he simply chuckles and shakes his head when asked if he’d ever consider retiring and letting his daughters fully take over the reins. Helen, with whom he would have celebrated 54 years of marriage this month, passed away in April - and without his "built-in best friend" at home in East York, he likes to keep busy. Coming in to check on the business at First Canadian Place twice a week, Toula said, is what keeps her father going despite the devastating loss of Helen. "Coming here is very therapeutic for him. They used to call him the mayor, because he was the longest tenant here and everyone knew who he was," she laughed. "He loves this building; he loves the people here; and most of all, he loves feeding them."

Soy Boy Soiree returns in support of SickKids research
JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Plans are in the works to permanently honour a six-year-old boy killed during an apparent July 31 murder-suicide at an East York apartment. Simon Cico, whose funeral was on Saturday, Aug. 19, allegedly died at the hands of his father, 58-year-old Zlatan Cico, who then took his own life. The child’s parents were no longer together and Simon lived full time with his mom in Scarborough, but spent some weekends with his dad. On Aug. 11, family friend Glenn Watson, along with the boy’s mother, who did not wish to be identified, set up online fundraising campaign (www.gofundme.com/for-ourbeautiful-simon). Initially, the goal was to raise $20,000 to cover funeral and burial ex-

Watson said she’s also like to use any extra monies collected to set up a fund in Simon’s name for

The Soy Boy Soiree is back for a third year in support of the Galactosemia Research Fund at the Hospital for Sick Children. The third annual event takes place at Amsterdam Brewery, 45 Esandar Dr., from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8. This year’s theme is masquerade ball, complete with entertainment by masked performers. There will be a silent auction stocked with custom items, experiences and vacations, as well as gift cards, sporting event tickets and more. Tickets are $80 for one or $150 for two and include a brewery tour as well as live entertainment, light bites, signature drinks, wine and Amsterdam beer. For tickets, contact Charlotte Schwartz at charlotte.dobo@gmail.com or 416-460-7826. Since it was established in 2014, more than $45,000 has been raised for the Galactosemia Research Fund at SickKids. A representative from the hospital will
be at the soiree to discuss the ongoing research made possible by the fund. People unable to attend the event who would still like to support the fund can donate online at bit.ly/soyboyrun. Galactosemia, an inability to break down the sugar galactose found in dairy products and produced by the human body, affects approximately one in 60,000 births in North America. Worldwide, only 25 per cent of galactosemic infants live past two weeks. For galactosemics, exposure to galactose creates a toxic build up in the body that can cause conditions including liver failure, brain damage and death. There is no cure for the metabolic disorder, inherited through carrier genes. Treatment includes dietary management that keeps galactosemics alive, but doesn’t ensure their long-term health. More research is needed to find why some galactosemics develop other related health problems, such as seizures, developmental disabilities or reproductive issues, while others don’t.

ABOUT US
Charlottesville proves we must unite against hate After the events in Charlottesville and their aftermath this month, we in Canada might be tempted to allow just a little bit of smugness amid the horror we feel at the images of swastikas and torches on parade - at the evil brutality of Heather Heyer’s murder there. We should strive to avoid that. Their president aside, many Americans, most perhaps, have responded to the resurgence of neo-Nazism and white supremacy with powerful and principled rejection. America may remain bitterly divided, with a cut still very much in need of healing sustained during that country’s Civil War. But its loudest voices - again, excepting President Donald Trump’s Twitter feed - are most hateful when they speak of hate itself. Canada isn’t in nearly that sort of trouble, or so it seems. We are open to immigration, welcoming of refugees, inclusive and kind-hearted. If there is evidence to the contrary, surely it is a trifling bit, or if larger and more systemic, then it is something that we have common capacity to correct. Thinking that is a mistake, particularly if one is doing so from the point of view of the dominant, which is to say white, culture. Setting our own prime minister’s "sunny ways" narrative aside, Canada has a history of hateful rhetoric and fascist movements, and Toronto has too often been at the centre of it. The 1930s’ Christie Pits riot in which real Nazi supporters clashed with Jewish and Italian groups is a good touchstone, but there have been more: the recentlypassed Holocaust-denier Ernst Zündel was a Torontonian for many years, peddling his hate from a house in Cabbagetown. The Heritage Front neo-Nazi organization had a presence in Toronto before it disbanded in 2005. More recently, Torontonians in the east end have found their mailboxes filled with the hate-filled screeds from Your Ward News, a publication that Canada Post will no longer deliver for that reason. And of course it is Toronto where now-former Rebel Media correspondent Faith Goldy is based. The far-right website let her go just last week after she appeared on a neo-Nazi podcast, following her attendance at the Charlottesville rally. It would be wrong to say that Torontonians have tolerated this sort of thing all these years; we haven’t. But we have taken false comfort, in the belief that the seeds of racism and out-and-out Nazism that have been blowing through the gutters will never truly take root.

Kevin Clarke, leader of "The People" Kevin Clarke shows me how he barricaded his apartment door, two days earlier, against the sheriff, his social worker, and police. They tried evicting him. He live-streamed it all. "If you put ’nightmare’ and ’hell’ and ’disgrace,’ that’s what it comes up to," he says of his situation. Follow politics closely in Toronto? You’ve probably seen Clarke. Five times, he’s run for mayor; nine times for MPP, four for MP, twice for councillor. He leads "The People," a registered political party. In public, he’s always campaigning. His campaigning voice is loud. I’ve seen him escorted offstage at debates when he wasn’t invited. He’s waved a flag or held a cross when

the Annex. I saw him disrupt a demonstration supporting the homeless in St. Jamestown; he wore roller skates and a bed sheet. At 53, he’s on disability payments, has back problems, liver problems, a busted foot. A program for adults living with serious mental illness pays his rent. But his landlord in Scarborough’s Kingston-Galloway area wants him out. Running to replace the late Rob Ford as an Etobicoke councillor last August, Clarke kept hanging makeshift signs outside his building and from his balcony. The landlord, and Clarke’s own social worker, testified this was related to mental illness. Clarke says he’s exercis-
ing his right to campaign. He maintains the landlord, forced by his complaints to clean up his building’s playground and make various repairs, wants him out for that. "I told them the only way they can win is if I wind up dead or in hospital." Last Friday, he went to Divisional Court to get more time for an appeal. If evicted, he’ll be homeless again. Clarke can annoy. He videotapes his arguments. But I understand now: as long as Clarke runs for office, Toronto’s homeless, its truly marginalized, its ill, cannot completely be ignored. Construction has begun on separated bike lanes on Woodbine Avenue. Work on the cycle tracks, which will run from O’Connor Drive to Dixon Avenue along with shared lane markings known as sharrows from Dixon Avenue to Queen Street East, started on Friday, Aug. 18. Depending on the weather, the first week of construction from Aug. 18 to 24 will see lanes built from O’Connor Drive to Danforth Avenue. From Aug. 25 to 31, the lanes will be constructed from Danforth Avenue to Queen Street East. The work will involve removing existing vehicle traffic lane markings and replacing them with new ones. Work, which will run
24 hours a day on weekends and weekdays mostly during off-peak hours/ evenings, will start on the Friday evening and end of the following Monday in the early morning hours. Motorists should note that there will be leftturn restrictions at all intersections and driveways during weekend work. Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained at all times and TTC service is also expected to continue as usual. On-street parking will be off-limits starting both Friday, Aug. 18 and Friday, Aug. 25 at 6 p.m. during the affected areas for the first few days of work. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction with no stopping in the traffic lanes. The new painted bike
lanes, flexi-post bollards, and signs will be installed during off-peak hours. Area residents should expect some noise as the existing paint will be removed using loud machinery during daytime hours. Construction staging may also impact some side streets. Later this fall, a connecting contra-flow bike lane will be built on Corley Avenue between Woodbine Avenue and Brookside Drive. Sharrows are also set to be installed westbound on Norway Avenue been Woodbine and Elmer avenues. Toronto City Council approved the Woodbine Bike Lanes Project last October. 5 simple tips for an outrageously stylish home
We all want a gorgeous, well pulled together home that’s both relaxing and polished. Learn how to achieve this with these easy interior design tips that’ll create a timeless finish. 1. Coordinate elements. Keep things fashionable by mixing prints and materials in pillows and upholstery. For a cohesive look that feels fresh and current by tying everything together with a simple colour palette. 2. Love your lighting. Filling your home with gorgeous functional items can only go so far if you don’t have the right lighting to flatter and display them. Silhouette shadings from Hunter Douglas let you transform harsh exterior light by diffusing it, spreading it evenly throughout your space so you can maximize daylight hours and reduce your need for artificial light.
like the kitchen that tend to get messy quickly. Only keep things that bring you joy and comfort or are necessary essentials — keep everything else stored and tucked away out of site in attractive storage like woven baskets or crisp ottomans. 4. Make a statement. Use larger eye-catching accessories to create an impact and focal point, instead of a bunch of smaller items that can end up adding clutter. Think a stately vintage mirror, a gallery wall or an oversized couch. 5. Get smart. Today’s homes benefit from sleek design featuring top technology. Imagine being able to schedule your shades to open and close with your local sunset and sunrise, or a fridge that snaps a pic of what’s inside every time it closes. Incorporate these surprisingly affordable features into your home and hook them up to your smart devices for maximum luxury and convenience.
3. Edit ruthlessly. Allow your style to shine by eliminating clutter, especially in high-traffic zones

TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION KAIROS KITCHI BLANKET EXERCISE Co-Hosted by MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, MPP Arthur Potts & City Councillor Mary-Margaret McMahon
Wednesday, September 13th, East Lynn Park, 5:30 pm The KAIROS Blanket Exercise is a visual and experiential way to represent colonization in Canada and its impact on Indigenous peoples. Participants step onto blankets representing the land, and into the role of First Nations, Inuit and later MĂŠtis peoples. Facilitators read the script and assume the role of Europeans explorers and settlers. This mass public event is a coming together of hearts and minds in a collective commitment to help improve awareness of our Indigenous peoples and history and to build reconciliation based on justice for Indigenous peoples. This event will last approximately 2 hours.

JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com The Danforth Village Business Improvement Area’s use of a slogan inspired by that of U.S. President Donald Trump has hit a sour note with many in the community. Last week, area resident Yona Nestel was walking along Danforth Avenue, near Main Street, when she was ’shocked’ to see a red cart with the tagline "Make Danforth Great Again" outside a business. She posted about it on Facebook and soon learned the slogan was being used to market a window washing service for merchant members of the Danforth Village BIA. "I’m shocked and disgusted that a BIA representing people of colour-owned businesses would think this appropriating Trump’s campaign slogan would be funny or clever. Especially given how overtly racist Trump is," she said during a Facebook interview with The Mirror. Nestel, who moved to the Danforth East area four years ago because of the community’s diversity, said she wants to see the "campaign" shut down and an apology issued to both the
community as well as the businesses, many of which are owned and operated by people of colour, the BIA represents. She also wants the Danforth Village BIA to acknowledge this was "in very bad taste and could be interpreted as racist." Last fall, the DVBIA launched the program posting about it on its website last November. The now-removed post featured a number of photos of a female window washer identified as Sara M. outside Tora Home Design, which is owned by BIA chairman Louie Dapergolas. Superimposed on a number of those photographs is an image along with so-called quotes of approval from Donald Trump who apparently "visited" the BIA late last year to view the "great work being done in Danforth Village." "He was really impressed with the Danforth Village BIA and the recent streetscape improvements to the area. He really was," the tongue-in-cheek post read. Louis Dapergolas, chair of the Danforth Village BIA, posted a note to the community on the group’s Facebook page in response to backlash pertaining to the Facebook video. "This video was created
and posted in November 2016 as a satire of Donald Trump. At the time, many of us believed that the idea that he would be elected President of the United States was outrageous," he wrote. "This video in no way suggests any support of Donald Trump or his beliefs, especially in light of what is currently happening in the United States. Instead, it was made to promote our Window Washing initiative, which is an exciting collaboration between the Danforth Village BIA and Dixon Hall, a shelter on Danforth Avenue. This initiative gives shelter users an opportunity to engage in gainful, meaningful employment." Beaches-East York Councillor Janet Davis sits on the BIA board and said while the campaign "was an attempt to be humourous, it really missed the mark." The Ward 31 representative said the community’s strong reaction shows there is no room for any kind of Trump-related rhetoric in east Toronto. East Enders Against Racism, an east Torontobased community group committed to counteracting hate speech and hate crimes, is denouncing the marketing campaign.

A free, nine-day festival of arts and community that aims to activate and explore the public square at the corner of Danforth Avenue and Main Street kicks off this weekend. Presented by East End Arts, Many Sides, One Square: Main Squared will run from Saturday, Aug. 26 to Sunday, Sept. 3 and will feature unique art installations, interactive activities for all ages, community workshops, theatrical and musical performances, a marketplace and more. The overarching goal of the festival is to spark and embrace creativity where it lives by bringing the arts directly to the

"Our festival theme is ’The Town Square.’ With this, we explore the notion that the physical space of a public square creates a natural stage for the ongoing, collaborative performance of a community discovering and expressing itself," said Cindy Rozeboom, East End Arts’ director of programming, in an Aug. 11 release. "The activities and projects presented invite people to participate in this
idea, in whatever way makes most sense to them: pondering an installation, enjoying a performance, finding treasures at an open-air marketplace, or participating in art creation." Main Squared is a signature project of the City of Toronto’s Cultural Hotspot initiative, which celebrates and showcases art, culture and community in East York and east Toronto from May to October 2017.
