H&M Celebrated Its Studio SS20 Collection With An Event In Beverly Hills Last month, with twinkling views of both the Los Angeles skyline and the ocean, H&M celebrated the launch of the Studio SS20 collection. The collection, made for a modern free-spirited woman whose style is as eclectic as her travels, came to life at a house in Beverly Hills. The mid-century modern home was reimagined using lights and filters to reflect elements from the collection’s saturated color palette, which contrasted against the natural environment of the hills. Guests, including Jourdan Dunn, Paloma Elsesser, Billie Lourd, and Selah Marley, all dressed in H&M Studio, were invited to view the new collection and enjoyed a female acro dance performance followed by an acoustic set by Lykke Li. Jameela Jamil, also dressed in the collection, was the DJ for the night.

As an extra treat, the crowd enjoyed curated bites by burgeoning stars of the California food scene, Yola Mezcal. Artist Maayan Zilberman of Sweet Saba created sculpted candy rock rings inspired by the new Studio collection as takeaway gifts for guests at the event. The H&M Studio SS20 collection will be available for purchase at hm.com and in select stores in the US from February 20th. “The SS20 collection muse is a forward-looking free spirit – someone who surfs, climbs, explores and who wants to experience new things. The collection is both raw and refined: natural fabrics with raw edges are mixed with refined elements, such as shiny metallics and futuristic accessories. There’s a freedom in the way the collection can be worn, too: we want our customers to feel that anything goes,” says Ann-Sofie Johansson, Creative Advisor at H&M. Inspired by a research trip to the Swedish island of Gotland, the SS20 collection takes a carefree surf girl as its muse: one who mixes voluminous wear-anywhere dresses with rawedged tailoring and sporty swimsuits. Key pieces include the electric pink recycled polyester dress, the limestonehued viscose-linen cropped jacket with raw-edged hems and wide-legged trousers, the chunky cotton-nylon crochet cardigan, and the statement platform leather ankle boots. A color palette of hot pink and cobalt blue with flashes of acid green dominates, set against limestone and cream. The collection will be split into two drops, with the second a high-summer offering of athletic swimwear and easy beach kaftans which will be available at hm.com at the end of May. “I’m very nostalgic when it comes to H&M as it reminds me of my childhood and shopping with my mom. I also love nothing more than to sing harmonies under the stars surrounded by friends. It was a beautiful evening,” says Lykke Li.

“I’ve modeled for and shopped at H&M since I was a teenager, so I was happy to be in LA in such a beautiful location to celebrate the new H&M Studio collection. This is a look I’ll be wearing on repeat this summer,” says Jourdan Dunn, model. “I’m thrilled to be able to celebrate the spring H&M Studio collection, alongside all these fabulous people. The new season has a ton of my favorite spring essentials; carefree dresses and fun accessories,” says Paloma Elsesser, model and body activist. 15 T H E E V O LV E M A G M A R C H 2 0 2 0

Klarna is The Ring-Bearer as Lady Gaga Says Yes to Herself Her ring of choice was the ‘Knight Finger’ ring created by fashion activist B. Åkerlund for Klarna.

In the ultimate act of female empowerment, pop phenomenon Lady Gaga has put a ring on her own finger to celebrate that we are all free to propose to anyone at any time. The ‘Knight Finger’ ring was recently launched by Klarna, together with fashion activist Bea Åkerlund, to give the finger to outdated traditions. This year is a leap year - when tradition says it is acceptable for women to propose to their partner on February 29. Klarna believes that everyone should get what they love, and not have their decisions dictated by rules or outdated traditions.

Lady Gaga responded to Klarna’s message of empowerment by saying ‘yes’ to herself with her 180 million followers on social media as witness. In an exclusive comment for Klarna, Lady Gaga explains: “For my entire career, I’ve taken pride in using my voice to stand up for what I believe is right. So I am excited to work with my friend B. and Klarna to celebrate how far we’ve come as a culture, and call out the work we need to continue to do. The idea that a woman can only propose to a man one day every four years is so completely 17 T H E E V O LV E M A G M A R C H 2 0 2 0

ridiculous! Anyone who knows me knows that I believe any person of any gender identity should be able to express any act of love to anyone else on ANY day of ANY year. So in an act of defiance of this outdated tradition, I decided to say yes to MYSELF! And wear this ring today with pride to remind myself and everyone that the only permission you need to love comes from within you” Klarna CMO, David Sandström on Lady Gaga’s announcement: “Just like Lady Gaga, we at Klarna believe that if traditions go unchallenged, the status quo prevails. Why should we settle and conform to societal and industry expectations just because? The Knight’s Finger ring was created as a symbol to enable everyone to express love on their terms to whom they wish, just like our millions of shoppers can get what they love every day with Klarna” Comment from the designer of the ‘Knight finger’ ring, fashion activist Bea Åkerlund: “The Knight Finger was designed to inspire us all to fearlessly love on our own terms and cast aside traditions of the past to define our own futures,” says Åkerlund. Lady Gaga is a knight in shining armor, defeating all that stands in her way. She is TRULY an inspiration in creating her own rules to express her true self. It’s an honor that she chose to put my ring on her finger”.

ole Haan, the iconic American lifestyle brand and retailer, announces today the release of its latest breakthrough product, the ØriginalGrand Ultra, the future of men’s dress footwear. Following in the footsteps of the iconic ØriginalGrand, the first true combination of innovative technology and traditional craftsmanship, Cole Haan continues to lead in the performance lifestyle category that it pioneered. Designed with next-level technology in mind and inspired by observing astronauts weightlessly walking on the moon, ØriginalGrand Ultra is the latest product in the disruptive line of Cole Haan men’s footwear, and the next great leap forward in comfort. With two silhouettes, a Wingtip Oxford and Plain Toe Oxford, the ØriginalGrand Ultra incorporates enhanced cushioning, delivers instant fit, superior energy-return and an ultralightweight construction that all adds up to out-of-the-box all-day wear-ability. “Our weight on the moon is just 16.5% of what it is on earth. You could jump six times higher. You could hop off of a building and land softly. With this inspiration in mind, we knew we were delivering not just an evolution of one of our iconic dress shoes – but a Space Oxford built for the boardroom of the future,” said David Maddocks, Chief Marketing Officer & GM Business Development at Cole Haan. 21 T H E E V O LV E M A G M A R C H 2 0 2 0

Both the ØriginalGrand Ultra Wingtip Oxford and ØriginalGrand Ultra Plain Toe Oxford were developed with Cole Haan’s Grand 36Ø Design & Engineering System. A high-volume dual-density GRANDFØAM footbed provides a soft initial feel, followed by plenty of energy return on each step the wearer takes. Additionally, an internal stretch bootie wraps his foot in a cozy, sock-like feel, while padding at the shoe’s tongue and heel conform for great fit and no break-in required. Every component from the upper design to the foam density is optimized to reduce weight, so he can go further than ever. “In our design process, we stayed true to the icon that pioneered what modern dress footwear has become, while from the inside out truly revolutionized this seminal style for today,” adds Cole Haan’s Chief Creative Officer, Scott Patt. The ØriginalGrand Ultra collection is available on ColeHaan.com, US retail locations and select international Cole Haan stores on February 6, 2020. Both the Wingtip Oxford and Plain Toe Oxford are priced at $180, and available in extended sizes and widths.

ew York. The city of wild dreams and infinite energy where genre-bending pop star Halsey harnessed her creativity and personal style to propel her career. Last season, the global artist and powerhouse celebrated DKNY’s 30th anniversary with a buzzing collaboration that, like New York, was multidimensional, energetic, and unexpected. For Spring 2020, Halsey launches a new chapter in her DKNY story. New York is more than a city for her, it is the forefront of her career. It is her invisible partner who challenged, inspired and pushed her to achieve the absolute most. New York has an irresistible calling letting all who embrace it seize opportunity and be who they want to be. “Life is confusing when you’re young and figuring it all out. The only thing that could pacify the hunger and bewilderment of my adolescence was finding my calling. The “thing” that makes me wake up everyday determined to evolve into a better version of myself than I was yesterday. I partnered with DKNY to reminisce on my days in New York when I first began songwriting and performing. For all of its success and excitement and the terrifying days inbetween where I wondered if this path was truly mine to call my own. What’s your calling?” -Halsey

Shot, styled, and filmed by the all female team of Zoey Grossman, Zoe Costello, and Nathalie Canguilhem, the campaign exudes a fresh urban attitude that builds on iconic DKNY styles. Multimedia artist and model David Alexander Flinn joins the campaign in sleek, sporty day-tonight pieces – the ultimate New York uniform. Fueled by the city’s bustling rhythm and vibrant attitude, the Spring 2020 #DKNYCALLING collection offers wear-everywhere, elevated essentials perfect for the season. 26 T H E E V O LV E M A G M A R C H 2 0 2 0

Minimalist, fluid lines pair with razor-cut fits for the ultimate urban wardrobe combining uptown elegance and downtown edge. Classic trench coats and leather jackets are defined by clean whites, bursts of citrus, and flashes of neon. For men, neutral tailored suits and relaxed knits contrast with camo prints and sunny yellows. The collection embodies Halsey’s and Flinn’s rebellious, youthful style.

The campaign, infused with blue tones and dramatic washes of purple and pink, uses the New York City subway, the beating heart of the city, as a backdrop. The dream-like hues of the campaign undoubtedly pay homage to New York City’s alluring drive to dream big and change the world. Everyone can be a part of the campaign using new DKNY branded filters that transport users to iconic Times Square to try on their favorite spring collection styles. Halsey’s voice declaring ‘New York calling’ alongside her own hit ‘Graveyard’ is a soundtrack that resonates throughout the season and allows users to be a part of her personal dialogue with New York City.

The campaign will culminate in a worldwide movement for all dreamers to share their calling in DKNY-branded phone booths in major cities globally - New York and London – beginning in March. Participants will be able to physically pick up the phone in each phone booth to enter for a chance to win special prizes tied to their respective city. Find your calling, make your mark. #DKNYCALLING. DKNY Spring 2020 launches February 14th globally. 27 T H E E V O LV E M A G M A R C H 2 0 2 0

ho better than that actual designer Madeline Gardner to share and forecast the wedding gown trends for 2020 as Engagements are sky-high, Valentine’s Day is on the horizon and Spring just around the corner? “Our message is clear: I design many types of gowns to compliment the varied types of brides, themes and diversified trends. I get inspired when I think that every gown and each bride has a story,” Gardner shares. Watch for: 1. Plunging Backs and Plunging v-necklines. Morilee goes deep. 2. Whimsical Skirts. Fairytale weddings are very popular. 3. Ball Gowns! Think “Tara” large, whooshing and whirling or layers of soft tulle with flowing, layered skirts. 4. Super Wow, dramatic trains that tell a story. Remember Meghan Markle’s veil featuring gorgeous, intricate embroidery specifically with the signature flowers from all of the countries in the British Commonwealth. Well, since then, brides have been eyeing sweep and fishtail to statement-making trains. Personalization and customization is happening where brides are adding touching details to the fabric of their wedding dress. 5. Beyond the Veil. Sophisticated, classic silhouettes are trending. Paired with lace-edged, long dramatic statement veils. Nostalgic or embellished, veils are available in different lengths, shapes and color. 6.Voluminous Puff sleeves. Dreamy. Romantic. Detachable. 7. Sexy, lingerie bodices. See-through ideal for beach and beachy weddings

Madeline Gardner has been sketching, designing and manufacturing bridal gowns, prom and Quinceañera dresses for more than 25 years at Morilee. Gardner is the wedding designer who, on Access Hollywood, famously sketched Meghan Markle’s wedding gown and second gown directly from the TV coverage, putting them into production and had them on Morilee’s website within 10 days of the Royal Wedding. “A great example of a 1950s era beauty retailer is the one recently depicted in the show ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ which illustrates perfectly how much at the heart of the retail experience the beauty counter was for the women of that time,” says Rachel Goodwin, Makeup Artist, and Makeup Museum Co-Founder. “Women flocked to these modern temples not only to discover new products and trends but also to take part in a cultural and social experience as well. Our hope at the Makeup Museum is to provide our visitors with a small window into what that type of retail environment would have felt like for the consumer of that era by offering a current range of hero products through a unique historical lens.” The Makeup Museum mobile app and website will allow customers to click-to-shop on the Nordstrom website for artifact-inspired finds. A wide variety of artifacts, including Max Factor’s 1959 Creme Puff compact, Erno Laszlo creams and treatments from Marilyn Monroe’s personal collection, and more will be showcased in the exhibit’s 1950’s artifact gallery. The Makeup Museum brings together beauty industry veterans including Doreen Bloch (CEO of beauty research company Poshly Inc.), Caitlin Collins (former editor of Makeup.com), Rachel Goodwin (celebrity makeup artist). Other founding sponsors include Erno Laszlo and Alcone Company. Tickets go on sale March 1, 2020 and a waitlist to sign up for early access is live at www.makeupmuseum.com.

MANTL, a premium personal care brand for bald and balding men announced today the launch of its product line: a portfolio of grooming products offering everything the bald and balding man needs to nourish and take care of his face and scalp. MANTL was co-founded by Karamo Brown, Cultural Expert on Netflix’s Queer Eye and men’s health advocate, Peter Ricci, MANTL CEO, and Irene Kong, MANTL Chief Product Officer, both Honest Company alumni. MANTL raised a pre-seed round of $1 million led by Airwing Ventures in addition to receiving funding from Revolution’s Rise of the Rest Seed Fund and numerous angel investments, including Brian Lee, a co-founder of The Honest Company. MANTL’s mission is to support and empower men who embrace their baldness, offering a sense of community, encouraging them to uncover their confidence and self-love, and finally leave behind the outdated ideas of masculinity. MANTL products will now be available on its website mantlmen. com and includes a line of four Face + Scalp grooming products: including a Cleanser, Age Defense Moisturizer, Invisible Daily SPF 30 and No-Shine Sheets. MANTL was born from a personal connection amongst the co-founders who each knew someone — including themselves — who struggled with balding. After meeting at The Honest Company, Peter and Irene shared their stories — Peter’s own confrontation with baldness as an undergraduate at West Point, and Irene’s experience watching her father grapple with balding since she was a young girl. When Karamo met Peter and Irene, he had just reckoned with his baldness following a decision to debut his bald head at an awards show, and then through the experience of helping his son on his own balding journey. “I am thrilled and humbled to establish MANTL alongside Peter and Irene; I believe our products are 48 T H E E V O LV E M A G M A R C H 2 0 2 0

AROMATICA Reforms the Skincare Industry with Innovative Formulas and Sustainable Packaging for ‘Reviving Rose Infusion’ Collection 50 T H E E V O LV E M A G M A R C H 2 0 2 0

ROMATICA, a clean and ethical beauty brand based in Korea, announced the launch of the newly refreshed Reviving Rose Infusion Toner, Serum and Cream with richer moisturizing and reviving formulas. Prior to the increased awareness of environmental protection, AROMATICA has taken on the responsibility to make a change in the packaging to provide sustainable products to protect the living things and the environment. AROMATICA’s newest rose skincare collection ensures the most essential products in their purest form. Reviving came from the increased damask rose flower extract, an anti-oxidant superberry complex, and superfood protein formulas, to guarantee emollient and reviving effects. AROMATICA strictly excludes harmful ingredients, animal-derived ingredients, artificial fragrance, and dyes- making them ethical and convenient to use for all skin from sensitive to irritated skin. A highly concentrated two-layer blend of organic rose water and essential oil, Reviving Rose Infusion Toner (200ml/$50) is powered by rose vitamins to replenish hydration and balance skin tone. The first layer after cleansing should be safe, and this toner is entirely formulated to hydrate the skin while refreshing, brightening and leaving skin supple and smooth. Rosa damascena, is known to have antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects, which makes for a great first step to prep skin. The strong, radiant vitality energy, Reviving Rose Infusion Serum (100ml/ $50), contains the lively moisture of damask rose infusion water and essential oil. The extraction is delivered by

a traditional method from organic damask rose petals, a high nutrient augmentation process. The increased amount of rose petals satisfies an elegant fragrance while revitalizing and brightening skin. There was a firm priority in upgrading the essence that consumers loved from the prior “Rose Absolute First Serum.” The advanced formula is loaded with vitamins, protein, and antioxidants. AROMATICA’s newest serum is more luxurious and sleeker for a vibrant and elastic skin. Reviving Rose Infusion Cream (50ml/$64) maintains the same essence as the serum plus the organic argan oil, shea butter, and babassu oil to smooth skin. A bonus prunus seed oil improves the skin barrier. With a softer texture and a richer formula, the smooth cream is formulated to fully absorb the damask rose water and essential oil and super protein complex- from soybeans and oats- and lock the moisture and vitality in the foundation of the skin. While going through the process of reformation, the brand saw the opportunity to take on substantial packaging innovation. The Reviving Rose Infusion uses up to 90% recycled glass, and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper, embodying the Sustainable Beauty promise. About AROMATICA: Initially found in 2004 by aromatherapist Jerry Kim, K-beauty brand AROMATICA is a holistic and lifestyle brand to rebalance your true beauty with the power of botanical essence therapy. Having studied aromatherapy for decades, Kim was inspired to develop a brand for its high-quality essential oils, replacing synthetic to natural ingredients. With the experience in the industry, the brand’s founder realized the impact on plastic pollution and began using post-consumer recycled (PCR) glass and plastic containers to put sustainability a priority and pioneer sustainable solutions.

Many people dream of taking a trip around the world, but most believe doing so is a goal only accessible to the very wealthy. As much as an around-the-world trip may seem as unlikely as a dream, in truth, globetrotting ambitions are a lot more attainable than one might think. With good planning, realistic expectations, and a few budgeting tricks, it can really happen. Here’s how to save money on a trip around the world. Plan it all out: Nothing kills a globetrotting quest quicker than just getting the first ticket, packing a few things, and seeing how things go. These things can’t be done spontaneously. A world traveller needs to research everything about their destinations, plan out the timeframe for their trip, budget out funds based on the demands of each stop, see about health concerns, and more. An organized trip is a successful trip, thanks to fewer unexpected money sinks. Stick to the cheaper stops: Some places are cheaper than others, though this rarely has anything to do with the “worth” of the destination. North America, Western Europe, Australia, and Japan are some of the most expensive regions in the world, and while there’s definitely a ton to see in those places, they aren’t the be all end all. If one has a particular inclination towards a certain more expensive place, that’s fine, but it will have to result in more careful budgeting elsewhere. Anyway, what’s the point of travelling the world if one doesn’t find an unexpected favourite place? Pick the right season: Season affects ticket prices in a big way, but that’s only one part of choosing when to travel. With the right scheduling, one can go all the way around the world, and enjoy a warm climate the whole time! While this is pleasant for obvious reasons, there’s also the huge benefit of carrying around a lot less in the way of heavy winter gear, which ultimately saves money on luggage fees, on top of the convenience. There’s also the question of which direction to take; going eastward is said to have a worse jet lag effect. Be open-minded about lodging: Travelling around the globe isn’t so exciting if every stop entails a perfect hotel room, especially once one sees the bill. Hotels are overrated, and in this modern age, we are blessed with an incredible array of alternatives to lodging. Hostels are cheap, and often surprisingly beautiful nowadays. One can opt for solo quarters, but the adventurous will go for group lodging, and find themselves making a slew of new international friends. Another way to guarantee charming sleeping quarters is by checking out bed and breakfasts, which are absolutely everywhere. When one is staying in the home of a local, it feels a lot more like world travel, and less like a corporate conference.

1. Ice Skating, Rockefeller Center, Central Park The ice rinks of Manhattan stand for perfect romance. Plan your trip there when the forecast calls for light snowfall to maximize your date. Members of the dating app Prospr agree that there is nothing more satisfying than the joy of gliding across the ice with a sharp wind on one’s rosy cheeks and a wide grin frozen to your face. NYC is equipped with ice rinks across the city, the most notable ones on Rockefeller Center ($25, reserve online) and Central Park ($12-19). After taking numerous rounds, complete your date with mugs of steaming hot cocoa. 2. Kick Axe Throwing, Gowanus Bar Brooklyn If you are not the romantic type of couple (or even if you are and you want to try something different) head to Gowanus in Brooklyn. Gowanus bar Kick Axe promises a space that encourages rather than shames the embedding of hatchets into walls with great force and fury. Let it all out on the huge 7,000-square-foot bar, with 10 throwing ranges. You will find experts who explain the rules and safety protocols, beer and wine, and a lodge atmosphere that includes a photo area in lumberjack style. Reserving a 75-minute axe-throwing session online costs $35 per person, while walk-in sessions cost $28. For those days in need of a nice place to chat and having some good food and drinks 3. Marlow & Sons, Williamsburg If you are looking for a classic insider place for now and then, you can sit in a dark room, have excellent chicken with drinks and chat for hours. This tiny bar is near the Williamsburg bridge. You and your love won’t be disappointed. 4. Ampersand, Manhattan This place is quite enough to have a stimulating conversation and even won’t break your wallet in the middle of Manhattan. You should definitely share the fish tacos and a spicy Margarita in this dim lit spot on E 23rd Street. It’s buzzing but never crowded, has a cozy and casual feeling at the same time and should be perfect for your next date. Maximizing Family Time

5 tips for spending more time with loved ones

Now as much as ever, close family ties can make a significant impact on young lives. Constantly emerging technology sometimes limits personal interaction, while many school-age children experience unprecedented stress levels. Building strong connections with trusted adults can give kids a sense of security and a better foundation for achieving their potential. Make spending time together a priority with these engaging activity ideas that allow the whole family to get in on the fun.

T H E E V O LV E M A G . C O M

Plan a Movie or Game Night Kids thrive on routines and clear expectations, so a regular special event like a movie or game night can give them something to anticipate each week. Watching TV at home may not be a novelty, but you can make it an occasion to celebrate by adding special touches like dimming the lights to mimic a theater, pulling out cozy blankets and preparing popcorn or other treats. If you opt for game night instead, keep the enthusiasm strong week after week by creating long-range tournaments or allowing kids to rotate game selection privileges.

Read Together Sharing books together not only creates an opportunity for bonding, it’s a way to give your child an academic boost outside the classroom. Studies show that daily reading promotes literacy, helps kids build their vocabulary and improves overall academic achievement. Also, the benefits don’t end with elementary-age children. Parents can connect with older kids through books that carry important lessons about life and relationships. Reading books individually then coming together to discuss them, similar to a book club, can provide the chance for thoughtful talks about difficult topics. For example, “Regretting You,” from bestselling author Colleen Hoover, explores a tumultuous relationship between a mother and her daughter who must turn to one another when a tragedy shatters their lives. Find more information on the novel at amazon.com. Cook Meals Together Eating together is a goal for many families, but preparing meals together takes those benefits even further. Engaging kids in meal preparation creates a sense of cooperation and instills pride for a successful project. It’s also a chance to share family traditions and pass on recipes that have traveled through generations. Enjoy a Craft Day Kids need the chance to let their imaginations soar, and arts and crafts projects can provide the perfect outlet for creative expression. An art session may be as simple as enlisting everyone’s help to make decorations for an upcoming event. Another thoughtful way to channel all that creative energy: have little artists make cards to deliver to a local senior or retirement community.

Take a Trip Discovering new places is an exciting way to create shared memories. A trip need not be costly or even far from home. Even a day trip to explore a new community nearby can provide a natural setting for the whole family to connect and form lifelong memories. No matter what activity you choose, investing in time together strengthens relationships so kids can flourish with the confidence of a support system behind them. 15-Minute Morning Yoga Routine for Beginners Written by Aleksandra Slijepcevic

Is this usually how your morning begins? You hit snooze, roll over a few times, and groggily wake up and stumble your way to the coffee pot; or maybe you get woken up by kids, pets, or significant others who are running late and have now jolted you wide awake into a frenzied panic… It seems as though our morning routines are hardly as gentle as we’d like them to be. A part of that is natural – we have real lives to live, that often require practical solutions. We have families and jobs that demand our precise attention, and no matter how much we plan, there just doesn’t seem to be enough time in the day for everyone and everything, let alone yoga time or physical exercise. 68 T H E E V O LV E M A G M A R C H 2 0 2 0

|

T H E E V O LV E M A G . C O M

In our effort to juggle all of the tasks a typical day throws at us, it’s not surprising that our energy may be low and our attitude about heading into our day may not be enthusiastic. Fortunately, creating a morning routine doesn’t have to push all of our other priorities out of the way, nor does it have to mean that we’re sacrificing sleep time for waking up super early and getting in a morning yoga practice. Shifting our tasks around to find 15 minutes of free time can drastically improve not only our physical health, but how we take on the morning to seize the day ahead. In the following sections, we’ll explore how to create a beginner’s yoga routine that is flexible enough to accommodate any schedule and yoga physical ability.

1. Find a Space in Your Home for Morning Silence This can also be a space in your office or hotel room, if you’re traveling. Creating a morning routine doesn’t have to anchor you to a house. It should be flexible and simple enough for you to take with you wherever you go. Starting your day off in silence can mean the difference between a day that is running you, or a day that you run yourself. It allows you to sit with your thoughts and feelings upon waking up, and decide which ones you want to take into your day, and which ones are not going to serve your tasks and goals. Find a space that is quiet enough, and where you can be alone. Turn off your phone or put it on silent if you know you’re going to be disturbed or distracted. And when you’re ready, sit comfortably – either on a yoga mat, bolster, or a chair. If you’re sitting cross-legged on the floor, prop yourself up so that your hips are higher than your knees, to ensure that your spine is long and straight. Close your eyes, rest your hands in your lap or on your knees, and tune into your breath, consciously. Notice how the inhale fills your belly and lungs, and rises up into your collarbones as you sip in as much air as you can; at the top of your inhale, gently pause. When you’re ready, ease into that exhale and notice how the lungs let go and the belly pulls in. Your only job here is to notice this breath cycle, over and over again. If thoughts come in, as they naturally will, just acknowledge them. Say hello, and maybe even a “Good morning,” and then let the thoughts go, and return to your breath. You can set a timer for 5 minutes, and just soak in this silence and breath awareness before anything else comes into your day. If an intention arises – a word or phrase that you think you’d like to take into your day ahead – say it gently to yourself and then open your eyes, when you’re ready.

2. Do 2 Rounds of Surya Namaskar, Sun Salutations Sun Salutations are repetitive in nature, as they allow us to not only feel our body in space and movement, but also to help us sync the movement with the breath. These postures in unison also help us energize the body and the energy, or prana, flowing through it. You can continue your yoga practice in the same space in which you found your morning silence. If, however, you need to change spots, feel free to do so. Unfurl your yoga mat, and step to the top, standing tall and proud with feet hip-width apart in Tadasana, Mountain Pose. Tuck your tailbone gently, as your belly slightly engages, and your chest opens. Bring your chin slightly down and back, to open up the back of the neck, and let your hands come down by your sides, with your palms open to the front of your space. Take a deep breath in and out, rooting your feet down, like tree roots. On an inhale, reach your arms up overhead, gazing up if comfortable, and as you exhale, begin to hinge from the hips as you swan-dive down to a Forward Fold.[5] Allow your neck and head to loosen as your upper body hangs here, and root your feet down into your mat to keep stable. On an inhale, hinging from the hips, rise up into a Flat Back, pulling your belly in toward your spine and keeping your neck long, as your hands rest on your thighs or hips; as you exhale, bring your palms down and step back into your first Plank. Take a deep breath in as the core and glutes engage, and on your exhale, lower your knees and come all the way down to your belly, with your core still engaged and your elbows pulling to the midline of your body. Keeping your palms down and legs together, inhale to rise up into Cobra Pose, and as you exhale, lift up onto your hands and knees, and make your way into your first Downward Facing Dog. Down Dog is a great pose for lengthening 69 T H E E V O LV E M A G M A R C H 2 0 2 0

and stretching out those waking-up hamstrings, so bicycle-pedal out your heels to get into this stretch a bit more. Keep your gaze between your feet or in the center of your mat, depending on what feels good for your neck. Stay here for 3 to 5 deep breaths. On your next exhale, begin to walk your feet up towards your hands, coming back into that Forward Fold that we did at the beginning of this sequence. Hang there with your head and neck heavy, and maybe take opposite elbows and sway here gently side to side. You can always bend your knees as deeply as you need to here, if your hamstrings are tight. Take a deep breath in, sending that energy to the back of your heart, between your shoulder blades, and on your exhale, like a rag doll, begin to curl your way up to standing. You may use your hands to walk them up your legs and back up to standing, but do keep your core engaged as you rise. Feel each vertebra, as they stack one on top of the other, re-building the spine as you go. Make your way back into Tadasana, Mountain Pose. Repeat this full sequence one more time, following your breath as you move.

On your next inhale, bring your palms to touch at heart center. As you exhale, come into your Warrior 2, by adjusting your back left foot to have the toes point out straight to the left, with the pinkie-foot side paralleling the back of your mat. This will ensure that your hips are now able to splay open to the left a bit more. Keep the bend in your right knee, and extend your arms long to the front and back of your mat, palms facing down. Rest your gaze over your front middle finger, or if better, look out towards the left with a bit more neutrality for your neck. Take a peek at your right big toe, and make sure you can see it. If not, gently nudge that right knee a bit more over to the right. Find 3-5 breaths here.

3. Do Warrior 1 and Warrior 2 Standing Postures Coming back into Tadasana, Mountain Pose, from your Sun Salutations, step back long onto your mat with your left foot, preparing for Warrior 1. Point the left toes to the upper-left corner of your mat, so that your foot is turned out, and bend into your right knee. Keep the bend at a 90-degree angle, or if you’re nursing a knee injury, back away from the bend slightly. Make sure your hips are as squared as they can be to the front of the mat, and look down at your feet and imagine you’re standing on railroad tracks. This will mean that your stance is wide, giving your hips enough space to rotate. Reach your arms up overhead, biceps by the ears, or bending your elbows and creating “goal-post” arms if you need some more shoulder space. Looking upwards is optional. Tuck your tailbone and engage your belly, as you find 3-5 breaths here. 70 T H E E V O LV E M A G M A R C H 2 0 2 0

On your next exhale, cartwheel the arms down to the mat, as you step back to your Down Dog. Take a deep breath in, and on your exhale, walk your feet up toward your hands, and make your way back to Tadasana, Mountain Pose. Repeat this sequence on the other side, stepping back with your right foot.

4. Find Balance in Vrksasana, Tree Pose

With your breath, begin to open the right knee to the right side, giving that right hip space to expand; when you’re ready, place the sole of your right foot on the inside of your calf or thigh. If you need extra support, place it against your ankle, with the right toe down for more stability. Leave your hands on your hips, or lift them up overhead to grow your branches. Rest your gaze and find your breath for 3-5 cycle. Repeat on the other side, lifting and bending the left knee.

Come back to standing in Tadasana, hands on your hips. Shift your weight to your standing left foot, as you begin to lift and bend the right knee. Square your hips, and root that left foot down into your mat, engaging the left glute muscle.

5. Stretch with a Reverse Namaste Come back to standing in Tadasana, this time, with your hands back behind you for either a Reverse Namaste or simply grabbing opposite elbows or forearms.

6. Open Your Heart in a Standing Back Bend Stand tall with your tailbone tucked, and take a deep breath in, feeling the opening of your chest and shoulders. On your next exhale, lift up through your sternum and hips, as you lift the heart up and back towards the sky.

Keep your gaze wherever is comfortable for your neck. If you are in a room, it’s helpful to keep it where the wall meets the ceiling. It’s more challenging to take deep breaths in this pose, so focus more on the exhales. This posture is beautiful in releasing what no longer serves us, so let that surrender happen through your exhales. When you’re ready, keeping your core engaged, slowly make your way back to standing, with your head coming up last. Take a moment to center your balance, before moving on. 71 T H E E V O LV E M A G M A R C H 2 0 2 0

7. Prepare to Have a Seat and Come into Savasana Slowly come down to have a seat, and roll down onto your back until you’re laying flat. Grab a couple of yoga blocks or pillows, and bring the soles of your feet to touch, as the knees come out. Place the blocks or pillows under your knees, and rest your head and shoulders down on the mat. Close your eyes and rest your hands on your belly to feel the breath coming in and out. Close out your practice here in Savasana, and stay for as long as you’d like.

Final Thoughts A morning yoga routine doesn’t have to overwhelm your schedule or take too much time out of your morning. This sequence brings you back into tune with your breath and your body, and you can practice it anywhere for 15 minutes to energize and empower your day ahead. 72 T H E E V O LV E M A G M A R C H 2 0 2 0

According to The American Institute of Stress, finding one single definition of stress is difficult, since everyone experiences it in their own way. We can reference the age-old Epictetus quote that says, “people are disturbed not by a thing, but by their perception of a thing.” If we subscribe to this ideology, we can see how the statistics for stress are on the rise, with the latest numbers averaging 70% of the United States population experiencing symptoms of stress. Not only that, but these symptoms have turned to physical manifestations in the body in the form of disease, as well as mental health disorders, such as depression and anxiety. In our fast-paced world, finding stress is easy. With too much going on, and too many tasks to handle, stress is the simple by-product of having too much on our plate, with not enough hours in the day. The leading causes of stress have become work/ career, money, and the future of the world (whether politically or socially within local communities). Stress at work has become the unfortunate driving force, with an estimated 80% of workers reporting a stressful work environment. When we’re feeling stressed, there are a number of physiological changes that our body undergoes: headaches, fatigue, aches, pains, digestion problems, insomnia, increased blood pressure, clenching of jaw, tightness in the muscles, and many more. Likewise, we develop emotional and mental symptoms, as well, such as agitation, low energy, racing thoughts, anxiety, depression, and panic attacks. Thankfully, with a plethora of external research on the subject, stress management has become a priority in balancing work, life, and anything inbetween. Major global economies, corporations, and organizations have shifted their approach to how we view stress, therefore creating more holistic work-life environments that aid in stress relief.

So how can you relieve stress with a few simple techniques?

1. Find Time to Exercise During Your Day

Exercising doesn’t have to take up hours of your time. We may not all be able to make it out to the gym or to a class for a couple of hours every day, but finding moments in your day in which to prioritize movement is a great way to begin the habit. Write in a time on your calendar to take a cardio class at your local gym at least once per week, and commit to that time. Drive straight from work if you have to, therefore eliminating the temptation to stay home. Take a walk during your lunch hour, instead of just working through lunch. Set up alarms and reminders on your phone to keep you accountable.

2. Stay Hydrated with Healthy Fluids

We may need a couple of cups of coffee to get us started in the morning, but that addiction has its ups and downs. Did you know that large amounts of coffee during the day elevate your cortisol levels, much in the same way that stress does? Choosing to cut your day’s fluids with water, herbal tea, or sugar-free smoothies or juices is a good way of balancing the energy you get from food.

3. Leave Your Work at Work

So often, we take our projects and tasks home with us after a long day’s work. When those to-do lists cross the threshold of our home, we begin to lose the boundaries between being an employee and being a human being with a family, friends, and a social life. Keeping those boundaries clear, and leaving work at work is a key technique in being able to enjoy the rest of your day, every day, to do the things that bring you joy, thereby reducing stress and leaving it at the door.

4. Make Time for Fun

Whether it’s going out with friends to a movie once per month, or catching a game or a concert, having fun is something we often put off on the back burner. How many times have you run into an old friend and suggested you meet up, and then never follow through? We’re all guilty of it. Life gets in the way; but just like we can plan our entire work day, we can also plan time for unwinding and enjoying the simpler things.

Self-care not only alleviates stress, but also puts you back into the present moment, where you can enjoy the day and yourself without chasing future thoughts. Try one of these 30 Self-Care Habits for a Strong and Healthy Mind, Body and Spirit.

7. Consider Supplements

Even though most of our vitamins and minerals are derived from food, sometimes we need additional supplements to fill in the gaps.

5. Meditate

Meditation is a fast-growing practice, and for right reason. Not only does it lower cortisol levels, which feed stress; it also promotes deep relaxation and rest. You can meditate in the morning before your day begins, to set the tone for how you’d like to approach your day’s tasks; or you can meditate at night before bed, to ease your way into a restful sleep and detach from the day’s events. No matter when you decide to practice, initiating it is the first step. If finding and going to a local meditation class isn’t accessible for you, tune into the many free guided meditation apps on your phone, such as Insight Timer, Headspace, or Calm. You can also take a look at this guide: Meditation for Beginners: How to Meditate Deeply and Quickly

6. Carve out Time for Self-Care

This could be your perfect time to treat yourself. Self-care doesn’t have to be expensive nor complex. It could be something as simple as taking a nice bubble bath at the end of a long day, or treating yourself to a picnic during the weekend. As long as it’s making time for yourself, it’s selfcare!

Vitamin C and D are high in increasing our energy, especially in the colder months where the sunshine is low and citrus fruit is not always readily available. Likewise, Omega-3 fatty acids that you would get from seafood and avocado have been proven to reduce anxiety by up to 20%, and they’re very healthy for your immune system and digestion.

8. Diffuse Essential Oils

Our olfactory system – our sense of smell – plays a key role in how we can relieve stress. Think back on your favorite smell and how you feel when you notice it. There’s often a sense of immediate relaxation, as if tension is simply falling away. Essential oils have long been used in aromatherapy to do just that, and these days, purchasing essential oils and diffusing them at home, in your office, or even in the car has never been easier. Some popular scents that have proven to relieve stress and anxiety are lavender, sandalwood, jasmine, lemongrass, and rose, among others. Aside from diffusing, consider topical applications on the inside of your wrists, temples, and soles of the feet, for a long-lasting, all-day effect.

9. Keep a Journal

Another proven tactic for eliminating stress is to begin a journaling practice. Begin each morning by opening up your journal and doing a Thought Dump. This involves writing down anything that may be on your mind, whether it’s from the night before, or a thought that you woke up with. It’s also helpful to write down any dreams that you may remember. The idea behind this practice is that once you dump out any thoughts that you may have, you’re clearer to prioritize your day. It’s almost as if you’re creating a new blank slate. Additionally, writing down your thoughts allows you to process and analyze them from a detached perspective, without them festering and turning into stressful recollections later. Final Thoughts

With as much as we’re juggling in our everyday routines, stress is the unfortunate stalker lurking in close shadows. We can give in to the stressful habits and patterns that keep us locked in physical and mental pain; or we can redirect our habits into something more productive, therapeutic, and healing.

Thankfully, with the resources and techniques at our disposal, those habits are much easier to implement than we think. About the Author:

Michelangelo: Mind of the Master brings a collection of rare Michelangelo drawings of the highest quality to Los Angeles from February 25 through June 7, 2020, offering visitors the opportunity to see first-hand the genesis of some of the master’s most iconic works. Michelangelo (1475-1564) is widely acknowledged as one of the most creative and influential artists in the history of western art. 80 T H E E V O LV E M A G M A R C H 2 0 2 0

Indeed, his most famous works—from the marble David in Florence to the fresco paintings in the Sistine Chapel and the monumental dome of Saint Peter’s in Rome—have come do define the Italian Renaissance. Moreover, Michelangelo was a brilliant draftsman, making the up-close study of his drawings an unparalleled experience. “Every one of Michelangelo’s iconic creations began with a drawing,” said Timothy Potts, director

of the Getty Museum. “It is through his masterful drawings that we can witness his creative process at its most spontaneous and expressive. This exhibition presents works from the unrivaled collection of the Teylers Museum in the Netherlands that have never before been exhibited as a group in the United States. This exhibition is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that cannot fail to make a lasting impression on all who see it.” Organized by the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Getty Museum in conjunction with the Teylers Museum, Haarlem, the Netherlands, Michelangelo: Mind of the Master brings an important selection of more than 28 exquisite Michelangelo drawings of the highest quality, many of which have never before been shown outside of Europe. Most of the sheets have sketches on both sides of the paper, and will be exhibited on freestanding pedestals so visitors can witness Michelangelo’s use of the entire sheet. Given that Michelangelo burned large quantities of his drawings, the exhibition provides an unusual opportunity to experience firsthand a key group of surviving sketches, most of which were once in the collection of Queen Christina of Sweden (1626-1689), a fascinating and unconventional art-loving monarch who abdicated the throne and moved to Rome, where she built a famously important art collection. “Drawing was a key aspect of Michelangelo’s creativity, and arguably no artist has used it more effectively in the expression of the human form,” said Julian Brooks, curator of drawings at Getty Museum. “From preparatory drawings and compositional sketches to detailed figure studies, the drawings in Mind of the Master are a revelation, offering incomparable insight into the fertile imagination and hard work of a titan among Renaissance artists.”

The exhibition explores the range of Michelangelo’s work as a painter, sculptor, and architect through his works on paper, including designs for celebrated projects such as the Sistine Chapel ceiling, the Last Judgement, the Medici Chapel tombs, and the cupola of Saint Peter’s basilica, Rome. For Michelangelo, drawing was a fundamental, lifelong activity. When he was a student, it helped him learn from other artists’ work; thereafter drawing was a tool he used to capture reality and the conceptions of his imagination. Consistently dedicated to drawing the human figure from life, a growing practice in Florentine artists’ studios at the time, Michelangelo took this to a new level of verisimilitude through keen observation, as well as by studying dissected corpses to better understand the underlying muscles. Early in his career, Michelangelo drew mainly in pen and ink, but he soon came to appreciate the convenience and effectiveness of naturally mined chalk. He used both red and black colors, preferring the latter as time went on. Today, as through history, Michelangelo’s drawings are valued not only as works exhibiting extraordinary skill but also as windows into the mind of the master —an intimate way to explore the creation of some of the greatest works of Renaissance art.

The Teylers Museum opened its doors in 1784 and is known as the oldest museum in the Netherlands, with a collection that is unique in the world. The collection of Michelangelo drawings has been in the museum since 1791 and this is the first time they have left the Teylers Museum as a group. The Cleveland Museum of Art has published an accompanying catalog with contributions from leading art historians including Emily Peters, Julian Brooks, and Carel van Tuyll van Serooskerken. At Getty, the exhibition is curated by Julian Brooks, senior curator of drawings with Edina Adam, assistant curator of drawings. The exhibition is supported by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities. Major support comes from Jo Carole and Ronald S. Lauder. It is generously supported by an anonymous gift in memory of Melvin R. Seiden. The exhibition is sponsored by City National Bank.

Moma’s Spring Reveal to Open with Changes To 20 Galleries On The Museum’s Collection Floors This May The Museum of Modern Art announced details of its Spring Reveal, opening in May 2020, which will feature significant changes to 20 of its collection galleries in the Museum’s newly constructed David Geffen Wing. The new MoMA opened on October 21, 2019, with a reimagined approach to its presentation of modern and contemporary art, including a commitment to rotate one-third of its collection galleries every six months. This new collection model highlights the creative affinities and frictions produced by displaying painting, sculpture, architecture, design, photography, media, performance, film, and works on paper together. The majority of MoMA’s approximately 84 T H E E V O LV E M A G M A R C H 2 0 2 0

60 collection galleries now feature works from two or more of the Museum’s curatorial departments, proceeding along a broadly chronological spine throughout the fifth, fourth, and second floors. A selection of medium-specific galleries within each circuit delve into art and ideas that only MoMA’s extraordinary collection can present. In the Spring Reveal and subsequent rotations, each floor of galleries will offer a deeper experience of art through all mediums and by artists from more diverse geographies and backgrounds than ever before. Conceived and installed by cross-departmental teams of curators at all levels of seniority, the Spring Reveal delivers on the promise to constantly renew the presentation, and explores the relationships among works of art displayed in continually changing contexts.

Fifth Floor, 1880s–1940 Georgia O’Keeffe, Alfred Stieglitz, an American Avant-Garde (Gallery 509) will feature works by Georgia O’Keeffe, her husband Alfred Stieglitz, and many of their contemporaries, including Arthur Dove, Marsden Hartley, Joseph Stella, and Helen Torr. Some of the works that will be on view have not been shown in decades. Stieglitz, an admirer and promoter of the European avant-garde, was one of the first to introduce works by artists like Francis Picabia to New York audiences as a gallerist. Ornament and Abstraction (Gallery 511) will explore the origins of architectural abstraction in both geometric and natural ornament. This gallery features the work of architects in both the US and Europe in the decades on either side of 1900. Key pieces from MoMA’s collection by Theo van Doesburg, Louis Sullivan, and Hans Poelzig, among others, are considered alongside drawings and architectural fragments by Frank Lloyd Wright, whose work during this period explored nature and geometry as a path to invention. “Modernism in architecture has often been thought to have abolished all ornament in favor of sheer undecorated walls; yet the very search for abstraction and new languages of form in architecture had its origins in the study of ornamental patterns of natural and geometric abstraction in the years around 1900. This is a story that has rarely been told at MoMA even though the collection is rich in examples of the laboratory that was architectural ornament,” said Barry Bergdoll, professor of art history at Columbia University and guest curator of the exhibition.

Fourth Floor, 1940–1970 Gordon Parks and “The Atmosphere of Crime” (Gallery 409) draws its title from Parks’s groundbreaking photo-essay published in Life magazine on September 9, 1957. Anchored by a recent major acquisition from this unforgettable series, this installation probes representations of crime in photography. Parks’s evocative color prints are contextualized with 19th-century work—including mugshots—and a generous selection of crime photographs from the New York Times Collection, as well as a clip from Parks’s legendary 1971 film Shaft. The gallery groups together a complex history of capturing criminality, its intersection with race, and its representation in the US. “In a career replete with important projects, Parks’s The Atmosphere of Crime is singularly resonant today,” said Sarah Meister, curator in the Department of Photography. “His startlingly frank

and nuanced view of criminality in 1957 is at the heart of this gallery and is juxtaposed with important historical photographs that engage with this topic and are enriched by the presence of his landmark film.” Domestic Disruption (Gallery 412) highlights the work of artists who, in the 1960s, began to focus on everyday objects as forms for inspiration, contemplation, and subversion. Strategies run the gamut, from inflating small objects into enormous versions of themselves, to committing the fleeting to permanence, to turning familiar items strange. Tom Wesselmann’s gargantuan Still Life #57 (1969– 70)—a radically different side of Wesselmann’s work and one that playfully reconsiders the world— will be on view for the first time in MoMA’s galleries since 1971.

emblematic of the span between the late 1970s and the early 1990s—a time of radical socioeconomic, political, and cultural change. The artists represented in the gallery moved away from the overtly didactic and ideological in favor of poetic, conceptual, and utopian gestures. The majority of works in this gallery will be on view at MoMA for the first time, including Moke’s Kinshasa at Noon (1980). This vivid painting, a recent gift from Jean Pigozzi’s Contemporary African Art Collection, brims with people going about their daily activities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s capital city, Kinshasa.

Second Floor, 1970–Present Shifting Ground (Gallery 206), explores the pivotal ways in which artists became agents of history during the period punctuated by the end of the Cold War, the rise of cable news, the consolidation of neoliberal politics, and globalization. The paintings, sculptures, embroidery, prints, and photographs assembled in this gallery are

and the breakup of Yugoslavia. This political turmoil provoked artists to publicly reassess their countries’ histories. Many artists disrupted the unified picture of official interpretations through experimentations in performance, montage, and fragmented narratives that underscored art’s critical potential to imagine alternate histories. Many works on view in this gallery are either shown for the first time at MoMA— such as Sibylle Bergemann’s photographic work Das Denkmal (The Monument) (1986)—or have not been on view in decades—such as a major grouping from Vincent van Gogh. The new digital initiative will run in parallel to the shows – rather than replacing the physical experience of an art fair – and will allow gallerists to showcase additional curated exhibitions of works not presented at the fair, each listed with a price range. For its first iteration, however, the concept has been adapted to allow exhibitors to present works intended for the cancelled Art Basel Hong Kong 2020. All galleries that were accepted to the 2020 Hong Kong show are invited to participate at no cost for the first edition. Art Basel’s Online Viewing Rooms will allow collectors to browse thousands of works, searching by galleries, artists, and medium, and directly contact the gallery with sales inquiries. Like the fairs, the showrooms will begin with a preview, accessible only to VIP card holders, followed by several days when the show rooms will be open to the public. Marc Spiegler, Global Director, Art Basel said: ‘As the art market continues to evolve, Art Basel has continually investigated how new technologies can give us new opportunities to support our galleries. The Online Viewing Rooms will provide galleries with a further possibility for engaging with our global audiences, complementing the essential personal interactions that continue to underlie the art market.’

Adeline Ooi, Director Asia, Art Basel said: ‘We are delighted to be able to premiere this new initiative now. While the Online Viewing Rooms cannot replace our 2020 fair in Hong Kong, we firmly hope that it will provide a strong support to all the galleries who were affected by the cancellation of our March show.’ The Online Viewing Rooms will be available via the Art Basel website under artbasel.com/viewing-rooms and the Art Basel App. More details on participating galleries and their presentations will become available in the coming weeks.

5 Innovatıons that are Makıng the World a Better Place With new technologies and innovations improving many aspects of daily life, humanitarian work should be no different. Saving and protecting children for decades, UNICEF, the United Nations children’s agency, has been implementing new ways to reach families more quickly, efficiently and cost-effectively. In honor of World Creativity and Innovation Day, meet five innovations that are making 2020 the start of a decade of good:

5. A cryptocurrency fund for game-changing ideas Blockchain increases transparency, security and efficiency, as transactions are publicly visible and do not have to be converted into other currencies for immediate use. A first for the United Nations, the UNICEF Cryptocurrency Fund is able to receive, hold and distribute donations in ether and bitcoin. The fund is helping accelerate and grow social good projects such as Prescrypto, Atix Labs, Utopixar and GIGA, which work in the areas of prescription tracking, investor-matching, community engagement tokens and bringing internet connectivity to schools around the world. 4. An inclusive period tracking app There are more than 200 period-tracking apps; most are targeted to Western adult women and provide information that can be genderstereotyping or fertility-focused. Founded by UNICEF’s Asia branch, Oky is the world’s first period tracking app co-created with girls, for girls. Packed with information vetted by global health experts, the app is tailored to Indonesian and Mongolian cultures and available in local dialects. To support further advancements in this sector, the app is open source, digitally inclusive and available even in areas where online access is limited. In its next phase, the organization plans to scale and adapt the app for use in East Africa. 3. Schools made from recycled plastic waste There are three significant problems facing children in Côte d’Ivoire: There are not enough schools, there are not enough employment opportunities for adults and there is an overabundance of trash. Daily, the Abidjan metropolitan area produces 288 tons of plastic waste. Tackling all three issues, UNICEF works with Conceptos Plásticos to employ women to recycle plastic into bricks to build classrooms.

The bricks, which will be used to build more than 500 classrooms across the country this year, are 100% non-toxic plastic, fire- and wind-resistant, waterproof, insulated and lighter and quicker to assemble than regular bricks. 2. Drones that cut transport times from hours to minutes Drones help reduce carbon emissions and cut transport times from 1.5 hours driving to 25 minutes flying. Leveraging technology, UNICEF works with drones to deliver crucial medical supplies to the hardest-to-reach areas. The African Drone and Data Academy in Malawi, a first-of-its-kind program, trains and certifies young students across the continent on building, operating and maintaining the drones, building a pipeline of future experts in the field. 1. A warehouse that can send lifesaving supplies to anywhere in the world With the world’s largest humanitarian supply warehouse, the UNICEF Supply Division is able to deliver necessities anywhere in the world as quickly as 48-72 hours. The size of four football fields, the Copenhagen, Denmark warehouse is equipped with enough health kits, vaccines, rescue gear and more to support 200,000 people at any given time. The warehouse is also home to an innovation lab that tests, designs and produces new and improved products needed in the field. In 2018, the supply network procured nearly $3.5 billion of goods and services for children in 175 countries and territories. In 2020, UNICEF expects to respond to around 300 emergencies and assist 95 million people with support. Make Cents of a Healthy Diet One of the great myths of healthy eating is that it’s expensive. Making healthier choices can actually save you money when you know how to shop smart. To help encourage healthier communities, the American Heart Association and Aramark have simple tips to keep in mind as you seek out affordable, nutritious and tasty food options for your family:

• Shop with a plan in mind. Taking a list to the store helps limit impulse purchases, but it’s OK to make smart swaps while shopping if items you’d normally use are on sale. • Consider your fruit and veggie options. Locally grown, seasonal fruits and vegetables are often reasonably priced for recipes like this Mediterranean Chicken and Grain Bowl. Canned and frozen options, meanwhile, can be just as nutritious as fresh options. • Cook once, eat twice. Choose recipes that make enough food to enjoy fresh for one meal and as leftovers later, such as this four-serving Curry-Spiced Tofu with Asian Vegetables. • Buy in bulk. Look for items with long shelf lives like whole grains and non-perishables such as canned beans and vegetables. • Focus on dishes with limited, common ingredients. They are easy to prepare and allow you to avoid purchasing items like rarely used spices. • Develop a budget. Assess your current food expenses each week. Multiply by the number of weeks that month to find your monthly food budget and determine if this fits with your other monthly expenses.
