C3

(Creating Culinary Communities) a subsidiary of sbe Entertainment Group, the leading lifestyle hospitality company that develops, manages and operates award-winning global brands, today announced the launch of its delivery-only restaurant concept, Krispy Rice, available now in Los Angeles with plans to roll out in New York, San Francisco and Miami in the coming months and tracking to open over 75 locations in the next 24 months. From the team that brought you Katsuya, the Krispy Rice concept was built around Katsuya’s beloved, signature spicy tuna krispy rice offering high-quality and responsibly sourced sushi. Sam Nazarian, Founder & CEO of sbe and majority shareholder of C3 commented, “Now more than ever it’s essential to innovate and meet our guests where they need us most. Through the launch of Krispy Rice, we’re continuing to build upon our strong brands and commitment to outstanding food and service while setting a precedent for food delivery and the future of dining.” Succeeding sbe’s debut of delivery only restaurant concept Sam’s Crispy Chicken last month, Krispy Rice is the latest driving component of C3 which will serve as an incubator of limited service culinary brands while introducing the world to a never-beforeseen approach to ghost kitchens and mobile delivery. sbe plans to chart new territory in the growing ghost kitchen industry that’s disrupting the future of dining, giving consumers the ability to order a meal at the touch of a button by opening over 250 ghost kitchens by 2022. Reinforcing sbe’s commitment to this growing field, the global company has coined the term phone to table, cementing its role in the evolving restaurant industry. The concept marks sbe’s foray into the food delivery spectrum that’s set to become a more than $75 billion business in the next two years. By the end of this year,

C3 will operate over 142 ghost kitchens spanning multiple existing and forthcoming brands. The Krispy Rice menu, conceived by Chief Culinary Officer Martin Heierling and the Katsuya team, has been in development for over five years and centers around the spicy tuna krispy rice dish they have popularized. The menu offers variations of krispy rice from king salmon with yuzu to the plant-based truffle avocado to handrolls like spicy hamachi and wasabi in soy paper alongside maki rolls, nigiri and sashimi – all available a la carte or in three combinations based on your level of hunger. “The development of the Krispy Rice brand is a true reflection of sbe, from our commitment to the guest and culinary excellence to our passion for continuous innovation,” stated Chef Heierling. “We are excited to share this brand with our loyal Katsuya fans and sushi lovers everywhere.” Chef Heierling sources quality, sashimi grade fish and a specially sourced tamamishiki house sushi rice for the Krispy Rice menu. And instead of sugar, which is widely used, Krispy Rice uses the alternative monk fruit sugar to season the sushi rice and sauces. Chef Heierling is also a part of UCLA’s Los Angeles Seafood Monitoring Project which works with university researchers and government regulators to reduce sushi fraud and the mislabeling of fish. The playful, bold packaging design is a result of a collaboration with sbe and award-winning creative marketing agency Digital Kitchen who together created custom carbon-neutral packaging made from recyclable materials. The visually fetching, innovative boxes were thoughtfully designed to maintain the integrity of the food while adding a stylish flair to your table setting. Utilizing sbe’s vast network of restaurants and partner ghost kitchens, Krispy Rice will be delivered to your doorstep quickly, and is currently available in Los Angeles for delivery daily from 11:00 a.m. 11:00 p.m. through Postmates, UberEats, Doordash, GrubHub, and Caviar platforms. Build Simple Breakfasts to Fuel Your Family 5 Tips to Start Your Day with Nutritious Noshes

During a period when many families are spending more time at home than normal, eating healthier is likely a popular goal. One of the many aspects to focusing on better nutrition starts with a better breakfast. To help boost you and your family’s immunity, try focusing on protein- and fiber-packed morning 20 T H E E V O LV E M A G M AY 2 0 2 0

T H E E V O LV E M A G . C O M

meals that are low in sugar. That doesn’t have to mean hours of prep in the kitchen or stocking up on uncommon ingredients. Instead, you can start with simple recipes that call for just a handful of inclusions. Additionally, when your menu is centered around less complicated dishes, it allows an opportunity to get kids

involved in the kitchen with tasks like measuring yogurt for a parfait, pouring milk in a pudding recipe or simply pulling ingredients out of the pantry and refrigerator. To help start your healthy breakfast plan on the right foot, consider these tips from Dr. Jonathan Clinthorne and the experts at SimplyProtein: Factor in fiber. When it comes to supporting immunity with nutrition, one of the underappreciated nutrients is dietary fiber. Fiber feeds gut bacteria, which helps produce numerous compounds that accelerate the development of immune cells and boost their function. The immune system performs better when people replace highly refined, low-fiber carbohydrates with fiber-rich carbohydrates. Pick ingredients packed with protein. It’s important to consume adequate protein when looking to boost immune function as protein energy malnutrition is linked to poor immune function and can impair the ability of the immune system to fight viruses and bacteria. Add foods to your diet like SimplyProtein’s line of non-GMO, gluten-free bars and bites. The snacks include 11 or more grams of protein and just 0-3 grams of sugar without artificial sweeteners, artificial flavors or artificial preservatives for nutritious treats to help make busy lives simpler. Build a balanced breakfast. People burn more energy through a process known as “diet-induced thermogenesis” when they consume high-calorie breakfasts rather than high-calorie dinners. This can ultimately help with weight loss and suggests that eating more food early in the day is better for you than eating a large amount before bedtime. For example, these recipes for Yogurt Parfait, Chia

Seed Pudding and Avocado Toast provide protein and energy with simple at-home prep. Skip the sugar. Avoid the post-lunch sleepy feeling by ditching sugar. Instead, focus on low-glycemic snacks that won’t spike blood sugar, helping to control your appetite. Feel fuller longer. Eating immune supportive foods like vegetables, berries, nuts, seeds and proteinrich snack bars can help keep you full and satisfied while avoiding less nutritious alternatives. How to Grow Your Own Food

MasterClass, the platform that makes it possible for anyone to learn from the best, announced that community activist and self-proclaimed “Gangster Gardener” Ron Finley will teach a class on gardening. In the class, he dives into the basics of gardening as well as the power and freedom that come with being able to grow your own food in any environment. He also shares his personal wisdom, discussing how gardening leads to a reverence for mother nature, why he feels “food is medicine,” and how all the creativity you need to succeed is already inside you. Finley’s MasterClass is now available exclusively at MasterClass.com. Students can subscribe for unlimited access to all new and existing 80+ classes through the All-Access Pass. MasterClass categories include business, culinary arts, film & television, music & entertainment, photography, sports, lifestyle and more. 24 T H E E V O LV E M A G M AY 2 0 2 0

“Ron uses gardening as a tool to transform people and communities — he is literally planting a food revolution,” said David Rogier, co-founder and CEO of MasterClass. “There’s never been a more important time for Ron’s MasterClass – he teaches us how to grow our own food and live more sustainably – no matter how much space we have, even if it’s just a balcony or a few outdoor pots.” A South Central Los Angeles native, Finley has used his position as an artist, designer and gardener to support urban communities. In 2010, he was frustrated with his neighborhood’s status as a “food desert”—an area with limited access to affordable and nutritious ingredients—and took matters into his own hands by growing organic vegetables on the city-owned parkway strip next to his home. He was cited and a warrant was

issued for his arrest. He chose to fight city hall, but after a deluge of media attention and support from a council member, he got the laws changed and was allowed to maintain his vegetable garden on the parkway strip. That was the first step in a revolution in Ron’s life, and he dedicated himself to creating cost-effective gardening solutions for neighborhoods across Los Angeles. Later that year, he founded the Ron Finley Project, a non-profit that teaches communities how to use unused space, like parkways and vacant lots, and turn them into fruitful community gardens. The organization helps spread Ron’s vision that “gardening is gangsta” and even the “cool kids” should understand their nutrition and where their food is coming from. He’s taken his philosophy across the world, sharing his story in speeches and conferences, including his own TED Talk in 2013.

“Freedom is gangster, and gardens represent freedom to me,” said Ron Finley. “With my MasterClass, I want you to feel the magic in creating something with your own hands—the power of growing your own food and building community, one garden at a time.” In his MasterClass, Finley teaches members everything they need to know to plant, grow and harvest their own food, from kale to sugar snap peas and sweet potatoes to herbs. He talks through why it’s best to grow kale from seedlings and legumes as seeds, and how resilient potatoes are and the many ways that you can plant them. He recommends which herbs to grow for beginners, how easy it is to have an herb garden in a small space and how to take care of herbs. Finley also teaches you how to not kill your plants by walking through proper plant maintenance, and how to pinpoint and treat common issues like rootbound and over- or under-watering. He walks through the essential gardening tools, and how to turn an old drawer, a teapot and even a shoe into plant containers. All students—whether they consider themselves to have a “green thumb” or have never planted anything before—will walk away from Finley’s MasterClass knowing how to be better gardeners, beautify their environments, and feeling inspired by his enthusiasm for sustainability and community. The class joins the 80+ classes taught by world-renowned instructors on culinary arts, photography, writing, performance, and much more. Each MasterClass has digestible video lessons sized to fit into any part of your day and cinematic visuals with close-up, hands-on demonstrations that make you feel one-on-one with the instructor. The All-Access Pass gives you access to every MasterClass and new ones as they launch. 25 T H E E V O LV E M A G M AY 2 0 2 0

H&M’S CONSCIOUS EXCLUSIVE SS20 COLLECTION HAS CIRCULAR INNOVATION AT ITS HEART 28 T H E E V O LV E M A G M AY 2 0 2 0

T H E E V O LV E M A G . C O M

H&M’s Conscious Exclusive collection returns this Spring Summer season infused with the glamour of the Golden Age of train travel while taking circularity as its philosophy. Alongside a host of sustainable processes and innovative fabrications, the collection is inspired by Le Train Bleu, the elegant sleeper train that ran from Calais to the Côte d’Azur in the 1920s. Bringing together flamboyant evening gowns and gauzy day dresses, the collection features new sustainably sourced materials such as CIRCULOSE ®, a natural material produced from recycled textiles and RENU™, a high-quality recycled polyester, as well as leftover stock fabrics from previous collections. The SS20 Conscious Exclusive collection will be available in selected stores and online at HM.com beginning March 26th.

“The stimulus for SS20 was the idea of glamorous train travel, which the design team felt was wonderfully symbolic of H&M’s journey as a company towards circularity. We were inspired by Le Train Bleu, and the decadent creatives such as Jean Cocteau and Pablo Picasso hanging out at Villa Santo Sospir in Cap Ferrat. We wanted to propose a collection that played to that decadent, carefree time but also contained enduring designs our customers will love wearing daily,” says Ella Soccorsi, designer at H&M. 29 T H E E V O LV E M A G M AY 2 0 2 0

|

T H E E V O LV E M A G . C O M

“For SS20, the Conscious Exclusive design team considered the emotional durability and afterlife of the garments they were designing more carefully than ever before. The team has doubled down on fabric composition, alongside utilizing dyeing methods that comes with less environmental impacts – we used a natural dye made from coffee grounds collected from H&M’s own production offices. We are committed to a truly holistic approach to sustainability, as well as to creating special pieces that will last a lifetime,” says AnnSofie Johansson, creative advisor at H&M.

Key pieces include a floor-length recycled polyester ball gown; a recycled taffeta mini dress with pleated sleeves; a CIRCULOSE ruffled day dress; a recycled taffeta blouse with embellished sleeves; and denim which is made of 100 % undyed organic cotton. Key accessories include flat cocktail slippers with recycled glass bead embellishments (leftover from a previous collection) and a bag made from VEGEA™, an innovative vegan leather alternative made from discarded grape skins and stalks. 30 T H E E V O LV E M A G M AY 2 0 2 0

mid the extremely difficult circumstances the globe is experiencing with COVID-19, it is becoming apparent in real time how dramatic human impact has been on the Earth and how quickly a change needs to be made for the better. This reinforces Polo Ralph Lauren’s aim to protecting the environment by using 170 million plastic bottles in its product and packaging by 2025. This Spring, the brand is expanding its Earth Polo shirt offering with a larger capsule consisting of new colors and designs. The Earth Polo, designed with Mother Nature in mind, is crafted from thread derived from recycled plastic bottles and dyed in an innovative process that uses zero water. Each Earth Polo is made from an average of 12 plastic bottles. “Changing the way we innovate, design and produce our products is the first of many steps we are taking as a Company to be more sustainable. For us, it all started with the Earth Polo,” said David Lauren, Chief Innovation Officer. “Ralph Lauren commits to using at least 170 million recycled plastic bottles in our products and packaging by 2025. Plastic waste is a major issue threatening the environment—we want to be part of the solution and utilize an innovative approach to create something valuable.” The shirt is produced in partnership with First Mile, an organization with a global mission focused on sustainability and positive social impact. First Mile works with entrepreneurs in low- income communities to collect recyclable plastic bottles, which are then processed through a unique and eco-friendly manufacturing program and turned into high-quality yarn and ultimately fabric. “When Ralph founded our company more than 50 years ago, he did so with the idea that whatever we create is meant to be worn, loved, and passed on for generations. It’s with this spirit of timelessness that we approach sustainability,” added Halide Alagoz, executive vice president, Chief Supply Chain and Sustainability Officer. In June 2019, the company published its full Global Citizenship and Sustainability Report, including its comprehensive strategy and goals. It pledged that by 2023, the brand will achieve zero waste to landfill across its distribution centers. It also stated that by 2025, it will achieve at least a 20% reduction in total water use across its operations and value chain, and 100% of its key production and packaging materials will be recyclable or sustainably sourced. For decades, the iconic Polo shirt has been used as a global symbol to help raise millions of dollars for philanthropic and social impact, including funding breast cancer research and care through the Pink Pony Fund, raising funds for global disaster relief, and supporting the LGBTQIA+ community. Home Office Skincare Routine Due to the outbreak of the current CoVid-19 pandemic worldwide, many people are encouraged, even obliged to stay home. While students and some professionals are on a mandatory holiday during this period, there are some people who take this opportunity and work from home. Freelancers, social media professionals, consultants and even teachers who utilize modern technology to teach their classes – they are all bound to their living room. And sometimes, due to the lack of fresh air and the many distractions (chocolate, I’m talking to you!) our skin gets dehydrated and needs some love too. Here are some home office skincare tips. 1. Make a homemade sour yogurt face mask with a dip of manuka honey for revitalizing and cleansing effect. This mask is great because of its natural bacteria in the yogurt. Bulgarian yogurt contains the so-called Lactobacillus bulgaricus which makes it not only delicious but also good for your skin. The mask can also be applied as anti-inflammatory as an after-sun care to calm any burn. 2. Coffee peeling – there are amazing brands that offer coffee as a main ingredient in their peeling products. Or if you find yourself bored at home during quarantine and home office (and you’ve seen everything on Netflix) try making coffee peeling. You can go DIY by mixing ground coffee with coconut oil and some sea salt for a special exfoliation treatment. 3. For a productive day at home, don’t go straight for the coffee. Make yourself a fresh ginger and lemon tea or lukewarm water with lemon. If you crave coffee, combine it with almond milk instead of dairy. Don’t forget to have your 30 min lunch break even at home, and then carry on with the emails. Good luck! Courtesy of BeautyPress.

BEAUTY & WELLNESS

Cost-saving homemade beauty on a budget Homemade cosmetic products are nothing short of genius. Yes, their expiration date can’t compare to store-bought cosmetics and the ingredients can’t do miracles to your wrinkles, but on the flip side during a financial crisis when money is scarce, they make the perfect solution. Here are our top suggestions you can make at home: Hair During social distancing and quarantine, some people decide to try the “no poo” method – not using shampoo and just rinsing the hair with water, or washing the hair more than 5 days apart. If that does NOT work for you, we’ve got you covered! There is a way to go around frequently washing your hair if you want to maintain a shiny healthy mane. Instead of spending money on dry shampoos filled with chemicals, make your own. It’s super simple – use baby powder to absorb the oils on the scalp. If you have dark hair, try cocoa powder. You can even add starch to make it more absorbent.

Lips Dry lips aren’t cute! And sometimes, no matter how often we apply a balm, it seems that the crusty lips just keep coming back. It’s because they need good exfoliation. Beauty on a budget? Make your own easy lip scrub with just two ingredients – sugar and honey! Want to put some color on the lips? There is a homemade solution even for color cosmetics. To achieve a lipstick type of consistency just mix Vaseline with a blush powder, or if you want to go all natural – mix it with dried and well grinded beetroot. Cut the beetroot in small pieces, dry it for 24 hours and then grind it in a food processor. Repeat the process twice to get a nice red powder. Body Summer is approaching and what better thing to do than make your own cream deodorant? They are typically more absorbent and long-lasting than spray deodorants or roll on. To make it, just mix coconut oil, starch, baking soda and for a touch of scent, an essential oil. Keep in the fridge for longer time.

How Caffeine can Budge Your Cellulite Those tell-tale dimples happen to the best of us; yes, even models aren’t immune. Swimsuit season is already in full swing, and it’s now more than ever that we need to pay extra attention to what’s going on over in leg land. Caffeine Cure. Cellulite enemy #1 is caffeine, as it tightens and provides antioxidants to the skin when applied topically. However, if you apply it religiously, studies show that it can reduce the appearance of cellulite, especially over time. Caffeine can also dehydrate the water content of your fat cells, so they’re less swollen, and cellulite looks less obvious. So, how on earth do we get that into our skincare routine? Scrub Up! You can go DIY by mixing ground coffee with coconut oil and some sea salt for a special exfoliation treatment, but equally you can save yourself some time and invest in a shower scrub that contains caffeine as one of the main ingredients. To boost the treatment, invest in a dry brush. Top Tip: Before getting in the shower, use your dry brush to exfoliate and stimulate blood flow. Brush lightly in a circular motion on any problem areas, or all over your body to reap the full benefits of dry brushing. Photo by Lood Goosen, Courtesy of BeautyPress

Follow Up. It is really important that exfoliated skin is cared for postshower. Invest in a deep rich moisturizer, which will help to keep skin hydrated in-between your exfoliating schedule. You can even get caffeine moisturizers which can help prolong the effects.

What You Need to Know About Your Thyroıd

Michele Adams is quick to say, “I don’t want to throw anyone under the bus,” but it took her being hit by a car for her thyroid disease to finally be diagnosed.

During this time, Adams went on a bike ride in northeastern New Jersey – something she still does frequently. However, on this day, Adams was struck by a car as she was biking.

Adams has always been an active person, but for a few years, she had felt tired and had a constant tightness in her throat. She was diagnosed with post-nasal drip but did not feel relief after a year of treatment.

The incident resulted in an MRI scan. Adams was not seriously injured, but doctors noticed something unexpected. The scan revealed nodules in her lower neck, which suggested thyroid disease.

“I thought this exhaustion, hoarse voice and lump in my throat were just my new normal,” Adams said. “I’d accepted it, and I shouldn’t have.”

“I now realize I had symptoms of a thyroid condition for years,” Adams said. “I’d had it up to here with not feeling like myself. Once I had the

MRI results, I knew to seek out a thyroid expert, and I found an endocrinologist.” What you probably do not know about your thyroid Thyroid disease is more common than diabetes and heart disease, but more than half of Americans with thyroid disease are unaware, according to the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE). This lack of awareness can endanger a person’s health and well-being. The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located low in the front of the neck below the Adam’s apple. It produces thyroid hormones that influence almost every cell, tissue and organ in the human body. Common signs of thyroid diseases include: • Unexplained changes in weight • Depression, anxiety or feelings of irritability • Changes in memory or ability to concentrate • Joint or muscle pain or weakness • Fatigue or trouble sleeping • Fast or irregular heartbeat • Irregular menstrual periods

Undiagnosed thyroid issues can also place a person at increased risk for heart disease, osteoporosis, infertility and other serious conditions. What to do if you are ‘up to here’ with not feeling like yourself “Once I was placed on treatment for Hashimoto’s and hypothyroidism, my life changed completely,” Adams said. “My throat is no longer sore, and I’m able to go out with my family or spend time at the gym without feeling completely drained of energy.” The first step to ensure your thyroid gland functions properly is to speak with a health care provider about your symptoms and whether a thyroid test is needed. An endocrinologist is a specially trained doctor who is qualified to diagnose and treat hormonerelated diseases and conditions, including thyroid cancer and all other diseases related to the thyroid gland. Visit thyroidawareness.com to learn more about thyroid health. Courtesy of Family Features.

Cheryl Rosenfeld, D.O., is a thyroid expert and AACE member. Rosenfeld is also the physician who treated Adams’ thyroid disease. “If the thyroid does not function correctly, it can affect every possible aspect of a person’s life,” Rosenfeld said. “Remember that thyroid conditions can cause changes in mental health, including depression. I’ve also spoken to patients who’ve experienced an inability to concentrate, which seriously affected their performance at work.” Several disorders can arise if the thyroid produces too much hormone (hyperthyroidism) or not enough (hypothyroidism). Other thyroid diseases include: • Nodules • Thyroid cancer • Graves’ disease • Hashimoto’s thyroiditis • Thyroid eye disease 43 T H E E V O LV E M A G M AY 2 0 2 0

9 ways to combat the CoronaVirus related Anxiety Written by Awilda Rivera

54 T H E E V O LV E M A G M AY 2 0 2 0

T H E E V O LV E M A G . C O M

fter 6 weeks Coronavirus updates are still dominating news cycles, social media feeds, conversations and interactions. Entire countries have been shut down and the United States is no exception. The collective has gone through the stages of grief more than a few times and the initial excitement of video chatting everyone you know has worn off. It’s enough to make any one lose it. But there is more at stake here than what your friends may think if you opt out of the next virtual happy hour. The fear of the unknown is never ending. The constant confusion about fact versus fiction is dizzying. All one can do during this hectic time is try to keep it together. The paramount concern is our physical health, but what about our mental health? During times like these the public hysteria, fear mongering and lack of information catapult many of us into a state of palpable anxiety. Anxiety causes us to experience stress. Stress has many negative effects on the body such as shrinking the brain, killing brain cells, changing your brain structure, and hurting memory. Consequently its super important to manage our stress levels, especially during challenging times like these when anxiety is running high. The troubling thing about the current corona pandemic is the large scale fear and hopelessness felt across the board by all people, regardless of race, color, national origin or political affiliation. Yet, all it not lost. There are still things you can do to help protect your mental health form the weight of uncertainty. Being proactive about protecting your mental health will help you to mitigate the stress & anxiety you are feeling. Here are 10 things you can do right now get your mind off corona virus and protect you mental health:

1. Take Several Deep Breaths

Staying calm in the face of the unknown is the key to getting through this next few months as we begin to take small steps towards re-opening the country. It is not easy to stay calm when it seems like everyone around you is freaking out and your mind is racing a million miles a minute. You want to remain calm so when necessary you can make educated decisions about what to do next, for you and your family. Intentionally slowing down your breath, will cause your heart rate to slow which will in turn allow your thoughts to slow. Reconnecting with your breath is a surefire way to return to the present moment and get grounded in your body. Bringing your mind back to the moment is imperative during times like these. It will help you to remember that you can only control your actions.

2. Turn Off the TV

Too much of anything is a bad thing. Give you mind a break from the healdlines, experts, and press conferences to simply process all the information that has already been presented. At this point the whole world knows about the Coronavirus. Every commercial break ends with more Breaking News, there are now podcasts and nightly townhalls dedicated to discussing the pandemic. Your brain needs time to digest and integrate all the information that’s coming at you. Turning the TV off for a little while could be the best things you’ve done all week. Instead Read a book, take a walk or go outside for a moment. Give yourself permission to reconnect with the right now.

3. Take Your Vitamins

Knowing that you are doing what you can to support a healthy immune system will both strengthen your physical health against the treat of infection and be a balm on your conscious. If it was raining you’d want to wear a rain coat. In this scenario the vitamins are that rain coat.

4. Meditate

Focusing your mind on one thing through the practice of mediation has been shown to have incredible positive effects on the brain. There have been multitudinous studies about how meditation benefits our mental well being. During times of mass confusion, its important to anchor yourself in the practice of self-reflection. Knowing who you are at all times is critical to keeping yourself grounded and being able to differentiate between your valid concerns and what may be the concerns of others that have been foisted upon you.

5. Practice Yoga

There could be another 2000 words written about why Yoga is good for you. Yet all that needs to be said is that yoga allows you to powerfully and mindfully reconnect with your body. Taking a moment to rekindle your direct connection to your 56 T H E E V O LV E M A G M AY 2 0 2 0

|

T H E E V O LV E M A G . C O M

body can be extremely grounding. The mind can be unruly and loud especially during times of mass panic. Yoga allows you to intentionally tether your mind, body, and breath together to create a empowering unity of being. Navigating the troublesome waters of life is a lot easier when you poses unity of being. Standing on one leg with your arms over your head trying to breath, and be calm will quickly take your mind off the worlds hysteria and bring your focus directly onto you.

6. Color

Like Yoga, coloring brings your mind, body, breath into a unison of action that creates a calming effect over you entire nervous system. The actual colors also have a therapeutic effect on you – ancients spoke of the power of color therapy to heal the mind & body. Modern scientist call this phenomena Chromotherapy.

8. Exercise

Studies have shown that physical exercise can reduce stress and help to maintain mental fitness. It has the ability to boost cognitive function, reduce fatigue, improve alertness, and enhance concentration. Similarly to Yoga, Meditation & Coloring, Exercise helps you to become fully engrossed in an activity – mind, body, and breath. It is very difficult to be worried about the corona virus when you are doing a 20 burpee, 15 mountain climber, 10 jumping jacks circuit.

9. Go to Sleep

Ancient civilizations in Greece, Egypt, China and India have practiced this for centuries. Yet our modern culture seems to be catching on, one example of this is the LED color therapy feature in saunas. Each color has a unique vibrational frequency which can help to treat and heal you. Therefore when you sit down to color you are not only engaging in an action that will foster unification of your being but you are also actively giving yourself color therapy.

7. Listen to Music

If you are someone struggling with racing thoughts, music maybe the best thing for you. Play something with words that you really lo the melody & message of the music to wash over you. Some studies have shown that music can reduce, pain, depression, and disability. It can even help you sleep better. Sing along, dance in your living room, let yourself be completely in the moment even if its just for 3 minutes until the song is over. Your brain will thank you for those 3 mins.

Sleep is EVERYTHING. If you have spent your day over thinking, watching TV, eating crappy food, talking on the phone with your very own chicken little then you are probably exhausted. Your mind can only take so much. Staying up late to watch TV or trying to binge shows to get your mind off the news is only going to cause you to go into sleep deficit. Conversely being under too much stress can cause you to have poor sleep, so it’s a little bit of a chicken and the egg scenario. If you are not sleeping enough you are more susceptible to overwhelm, irritability, anger, lack of patience, emotional outbursts, skipping exercise, lack of interest in your normal activities, and a lack of motivation. Therefore the importance of sleep can not be overstated. Pick a time to turn off the TV every night and go to bed. Put your phone on do not disturb and give yourself at least 20 minutes of quiet time before bed with no TV. Those 20 minutes will help you to power down your mind. Make this your bedtime routine for a week and see how it feels.

Final Thought

These are challenging times which demand adaptability, compassion and clear decision making. Give yourself permission to clear your mind, cultivate unity of being, be present and step away from the updates. Your mind will thank you. Want more motivation & inspiration like this? Life/Relationship Coach, Lisa Sawicki Warns Against the Permanent Damage Isolation Can Do to Relationships 58 T H E E V O LV E M A G M AY 2 0 2 0

|

T H E E V O LV E M A G . C O M

Many relationships are extremely challenged right now with 24/7 self-isolation. Everyone is sensitive and every day, toxic damage is happening with many couples. Life and Relationship Coach Lisa Sawicki has a few helpful strategies to help keep relationships healthy and strong.

“10 Healthy Relationship Strategies to Avoid Permanent Damage” 1. Take the attitude to really partner together so that each partner can feel the support of each other and know “You will get through all of this together… with grace and ‘being on the same team’.” Everyone is highly sensitive right now. Be kind, empathetic and compassionate. Do not criticize, shame or blame. 2. Partners should schedule mutually available time (without the children or anyone near) to have a safe place to calmly communicate and problem solve what important needs and concerns they may have. 3. Set and prioritize goals together and stick to the plan unless something significant occurs and it needs to be altered. Both sides must HEAR each other’s point of view and agree to compromise. 4. Random acts of kindness go a long way. Surprising each other with a cup of tea, neck or foot massage,

serving a meal or snack, physical and verbal affectionate, say “Thank you” for even the little gestures. 5. Give each other personal space in the home. Personal Space + Healthy Boundaries = Healthy Relationships 6. Find compromises for needed chores and problem solving. Have easy to make meals in the refrigerator so breakfast and lunch can be easily prepared. Make dinner relaxing ‘couple time.’ 7. “Don’t Lose Yourself ” – each person in the relationship should continue what they need and like to do even if their partner does not. 8. Each partner should make a list of Coping and Soothing Stress Relievers that they can do each by themselves together or for each other. Affection and humor are very bonding. 9. Create fun experiences together...there is a lot of fun things to do. 10. Both people should Care ENOUGH about the relationship and their partner to try their best even under these circumstances. It’s worth it! For more information, visit www.selfcoachnow.us. 59 T H E E V O LV E M A G M AY 2 0 2 0

4 Ways to Help Nurses During the Coronavirus Pandemic America’s nurses are on the front lines of the fight against coronavirus, providing safe, quality, compassionate and nondiscriminatory care to those they serve, many of whom are doing so at significant risk to their own well-being. The American Nurses Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the American Nurses Association, created the Coronavirus Response Fund for Nurses to provide direct financial assistance, mental health support and science- and data-based information to nurses serving on the front lines. “Nurses always answer the call to serve their patients, communities and country during times of crisis,” said American Nurses Foundation Chair Tim Porter-O’Grady, DM, EdD, ScD (h), APRN, FAAN, FACCWS. “As we confront the new and emerging challenges of this pandemic, nurses are and will continue serving on the front lines in extraordinary ways.” 60 T H E E V O LV E M A G M AY 2 0 2 0

To show your support during this uncertain time, consider taking part in these four key actions: 1. Text THANKS to 20222 to donate $10. One of the easiest ways to directly support nurses is to donate $10 to the Coronavirus Response Fund for Nurses, spread the word to others using the hashtag #ThanksNurses, and visit ThanksNurses. org. 2. Stay home. Only leave home for essentials and maintain a safe distance from other people. 3. Wash your hands. Frequently wash your hands for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating and after blowing your nose, sneezing or coughing. It is also important to wash your hands after going out in public and touching items that others may have come in contact with such as doors, shopping carts or credit card readers. 4. Follow local guidelines. Seek guidance from local public health officials, such as those at your county health department. Nurses are reliable and proven responders during infectious disease emergencies, providing essential

care where it is needed most. Following simple steps like these can go a long way toward keeping people healthy. Donations will help provide direct financial assistance, mental health support and science- and data-based information to benefit nurses. Visit ThanksNurses.org to learn more. Courtesy of Family Features. About the Support Fund The American Nurses Foundation’s Coronavirus Response Fund for Nurses is a nationwide effort to provide direct financial assistance, mental health support and science- and data-based resources to benefit nurses. The Johnson & Johnson company and its TYLENOL brand made a $1.5 million commitment to launch this fund. A portion of the donations will help support Nurses House, Inc., a national fund for registered nurses in need. The American Nurses Foundation is partnering with this organization to help nurses affected by COVID-19. Nurses who are unable to work due to COVID-19 infection, are caring for a family member with COVID-19 or are under mandatory quarantine can submit an application for assistance.

With Sound Shout’s “Wave It” technology, digital song files are converted into a variety of stunning wave patterns, giving music enthusiasts a unique visual medium to express their favorite songs. “Music is an artform unlike any other – its power to move and inspire is undeniable, yet it is fleeting in form,” said Ron Brahy, Founder of Sound Shout. “Sound Shout changes the essence of music into a visual artform, giving fans an ever-lasting representation to show off the songs that matter the most.”

Wave It – The Technology that Brings Music to Life Sound Shout’s Wave It technology converts MP3 files into waveform artwork – a striking and vibrant visual representation of any song. Key song data, such as Artist/Band, Song Name, Release Date and Length of song (time) is captured to accompany the converted wave file. Finally, Sound Shout applies up to eight different visual effects so that consumers can see their songs in a variety of colors to best match their tastes and environments. Printing is completed on a 32-inch by 12-inch 100-percent cotton rag canvas, giving the owner a durable, gallery-quality print. A hard-sealed backing makes installation effortless, while color protection ensures image brilliance for the lifetime of the print.

Availability and Pricing Customers can upload their favorite songs to Sound Shout for free. Sound Shout artwork is currently only available in the U.S. for $149 at www.Sound-Shout.com. Shipping is free to the continental U.S.; extra charges may apply to Alaska and Hawaii.

Within today will release Supernatural, the world’s first subscription-based, full-body fitness service for virtual reality. Designed for Oculus Quest and paired with your smartphone, Supernatural provides users with expertly coached daily workouts, detailed fitness tracking, an expansive catalog of music and a chance to exercise in the world’s most beautiful locations without ever leaving home. “We built Supernatural to solve a problem we had,” says Within co-founder and CEO, Chris Milk. “Exercise requires long-term commitment to see benefits, but for many offers very little shortterm enjoyment. Virtual reality allows us to make home exercise fundamentally fun and something you actually look forward to doing. It’s similar to playing a sport you love, but that sport is from the future, and it fits in your bedroom.”

Home-Fitness Has Never Been More Fun Supernatural embraces a new paradigm when it comes to interactive physical movement in VR. Paired with gorgeous photoreal landscapes and energizing music, users are transported and challenged to move in ways that fire up heart rates and tone muscles. Daily on-demand workouts are personalized “rhythm maps,” designed by choreographers and coached by top fitness trainers. “We’ve taken everything we know and love about moving to music in VR and paired it with everything we wanted from in-home fitness: expert guidance, real-time metrics and results, while leaving out everything we don’t—mainly the rowing, running and cycling in place,” says Within co-founder, Aaron Koblin. “It’s both incredibly fun, and rooted in healthy movement.” 73 T H E E V O LV E M A G M AY 2 0 2 0

Creator-Made for This Moment in Fitness Created by Within, Supernatural started two years ago, with a big ambition from co-founders Aaron Koblin and Chris Milk to create an exercise service that could make users love, rather than loathe, working out. Two crucial questions fueled the creators’ quest: What can VR uniquely do that other fitness systems can only dream of doing? And, what if we could achieve the mental and physical equivalent of 30 minutes of snowboarding in the Swiss Alps, all in the comfort of your home? Supernatural was built using the guidance of experts in the fields of physical fitness, biokinesiology, and healthy human movement. Combined with an incredible roster of choreographers, video game designers, artists, and engineers, the result is Supernatural.
