SUBJECT: Geography
What will I learn in this subject?
A variety of skills are learned throughout our Geography Junior Cycle syllabus. These are Problem solving, Numeracy and Literacy skills, Analytical skills, Social and Environmental Awareness, Team-Work, Computer Literacy, Spatial Awareness, Self-Management and Map Skills. Topics will include: The Structure of the Earth, Volcanoes, Earthquakes, Rocks, Population, Urbanisation, Maps, Economic activities, Rivers, Coasts, Weather and Climate Change.
How will I learn in this subject?
Through a variety of different methods which include videos, PowerPoints, oral presentations, written work, group work, collaboration with others and building models for semester two projects.
Is learning this subject in CPS anything like what I did in Primary School?
Yes, it is very similar, but it has more detail and it investigates new and past topics/events that occur around the world. You will also be able to draw diagrams similar to those in primary school.
How will this subject be useful to me?
Everybody uses geography in their daily lives. When you think of where to go on holiday or wonder what tomorrow’s weather will be like, you are thinking geography. When you look at an atlas map, or a town plan or a weather map, you will use the skills you have learnt in Geography class.
Assessment?
Group Projects, individual projects, oral assessments, chapter tests, written tests, Kahoot quizzes, PowerPoints, Model-making, Posters etc are just some of the ways the students are assessed in Geography in CP Setanta. For Junior Cycle Geography students will complete two classroom based assessments and a final written assessment at the end of 3rd Year.
