SUBJECT: Applied Technology

What will I learn in this subject?

Junior Cycle Applied Technology aims to develop the students' curiosity of the technological world while integrating the necessary subject knowledge with the disciplinary skills to investigate and solve real-life problems.

How will I learn in this subject?

Applied Technology focuses on developing students’ understanding of, and skills in, the application and impact of technologies in the world around them. This will be achieved through three inter-connected contextual strands: Principles and practices, Energy and control and Technology and society. Throughout each of the strands, the use of four elements: Analysis and problem solving, Design and innovation, Planning, managing, creating and Communicating creates a framework for learning that ensures a coherent learning experience for the students.

Is learning this subject in CPS anything like what I did in Primary School?

Technology will build upon some of the skills you would have learned in Primary school Maths. It also has links to Science such as in the area of leaning about various materials and where and how they are used.

How will this subject be useful to me?

Technology will help you to solve many technological problems you may experience in everyday life. This subject helps you to develop your problem solving skills by allowing you time to practice and carry out solutions you have created and designed individually and with your classmates. It will also give you a basic understanding of electronic circuits, gear systems and how to work with basic tools and equipment in a safe way.

Assessment?

Students will complete two Classroom Based Assessments and a Written Exam for their Junior Cycle.
