SUBJECT: Wood Technology

What will I learn in this subject?

In this subject you will learn about the correct and safe use of Tools and Equipment for Manufacturing Projects from Wood. You will learn about the Process of Design and how to Sketch, Evaluate and Build all manner of Projects. This subject aims to promote Understanding of the Environment, Ethically sourcing Materials and Maintaining a natural balance through Sustainability. You will have the chance to explore different types of trees and different practical skills, applying your knowledge to solve problems.

How will I learn in this subject?

This subject has a large emphasis on Designing and Practical skills. Most of the learning will take place in a physical, hands on approach. You will learn a variety of new skills though making projects. The subject has an emphasis on design, so creativity is highly encouraged. There are a number of theory topics which will be taught in an immersive and co-operative style.

Is learning this subject in CPS anything like what I did in Primary School?

You will have the chance to apply drawing skills, maths skills and design skills to new areas of your education. The practical element will be completely new to most students, as the tools and equipment available in the workshop are specific to Wood Technology. You will make and take home projects every Semester, and we will endeavour for you to have a design element of your own as part of each project.

How will this subject be useful to me?

Skills learned in Wood Technology are very useful in the real world. You can apply your new knowledge to selecting furniture or finishes for wooden items and you will gain experience with saws and drills that can be used for home DIY. Practical skills also offer the opportunity to gain an Apprenticeship.

Assessment?

The Junior Cycle Wood Technology Assessment is 70% for a Practical and Portfolio Element and 30% for a Theory Exam. There are also two Classroom Based Assessments, one in 2nd Year and one in 3rd Year. These earn Descriptors which will appear on your Junior Cycle Portfolio of Achievement.
