What is this subject all about at Senior Cycle?

Senior Cycle German continues to develop the four skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening in the German language. Through focusing on these you will further your knowledge of German grammar and vocabulary. There is a strong emphasis on extending your ability to communicate in German at a more complex level. You will also build on your knowledge of cultural, social and political aspects of German life. A Modern Foreign Language is essential for entry into most universities in Ireland.

Do I have to have studied this subject at Junior Cycle in order to do it at Senior Cycle?

Yes, you should have studied German at Junior Cycle Level in order to continue with it for your Leaving Certificate.

Will learning this subject at Senior Cycle be different to what I studied at Junior Cycle?

Senior Cycle German builds on Junior Cycle topics in order to increase your ability to communicate in German. You will still be focusing on learning to talk and write about yourself and the world around you. There will be an increased focus on the workings of German as a language and this will help you to become more aware of the workings of any languages you may speak. Comprehension questions will be in German and no longer in English.

For their Leaving Certificate students can sit the Higher or Ordinary Level exam which consists of oral, listening and written elements, set by the State Examinations Commission.
