SUBJECT: Biology

What is this subject all about at Senior Cycle?

The Biology course covers a wide range of topics, including cell structure and diversity, metabolism, genetics, human and flowering anatomy and physiology. The general principles of ecology are studied, and an ecology field trip is arranged during year 1 or year 2. Particular emphasis is placed on the practical aspects of Biology and there are a number of experiments that each student must carry out for themselves.

Will learning this subject at Senior Cycle be different to what I studied at Junior Cycle?

Students who enjoyed studying this science subject as part of their Junior Cycle Science course might wish to continue studying Biology at Senior Cycle. The course is a continuation of what has been covered in Junior Cycle but in much more detail. There can sometimes appear to be a lot to learn but it can be an enriching experience, plant the seeds of a lifelong interest and make your viewing of the Discovery channel all the more enjoyable.

Assessment?

Throughout Senior Cycle students are regularly assessed through class tests, end of Semester Exams, Quizzes and peer and self-assessment to name but a few. For their Leaving Certificate students can do either the Higher or Ordinary Level exam at the end of 6th Year.
