SUBJECT: Home Economics
What is this subject all about at Senior Cycle?
Home Economics at Senior Cycle is a progression from the work done at Junior Cycle. It still combines theory and practice, but there is much less emphasis on practical work at Senior Cycle and the course is more Scientific. Home Economics at Senior Cycle is concerned with the way individuals and families manage their resources to meet physical, emotional, intellectual, social and economic needs. The core syllabus consists of three areas: Food Studies (45%), Resource Management and Consumer Studies (25%) and Social Studies (10%). There are also three elective areas from which students will choose one to complete worth 20%; Home Design and Management, Textiles, Fashion and Design or Social Studies.
Do I have to have studied this subject at Junior Cycle in order to do it at Senior Cycle?
It is recommended that you have studied Junior Cycle Home Economics in order to continue studying it at Senior Cycle Level.
Will learning this subject at Senior Cycle be different to what I studied at Junior Cycle?
Much of the skills you will have learnt and developed at Junior Cycle will continue with the Senior Cycle course. As with Junior Cycle there will be both practical and theoretical elements in Senior Cycle.
