The 2012 Moon Almanac* Kim Long

* and Moon Calendar Card!

For the legions of sky watchers everywhere, a new almanac that offers a wealth of detailed moon data and facts— plus a bonus pull-out moon calendar card with each day’s phase We humans have been watching the moon for nearly as long as we’ve left a written record. Year after year, generation after generation, we watch, compelled and intrigued, as our nearest celestial companion makes its cyclical trek through the sky above. Now The 2012 Moon Almanac connects us to the moon more closely than ever. Here are exact times of full, new, and first- and last-quarter moons for all American time zones, plus detailed information on 2012’s rare blue moon, lunar and solar eclipses, brightest moons of the year, hours of moonlight each day, a moon rise/set horizon locator, prime viewing times for the moon in proximity to planets and major stars, days and times for apogees and perigees, and lunar-based holidays. Names of the full moons and moon trivia, plus information on gardening, fishing, and hunting by the moon, will have those who look to the moon for its light, power, and inspiration consulting The 2012 Moon Almanac—and its bonus calendar card—day after day all through the year.

 The antecedent Moon Calendar Card has garnered thousands of fans over the last nearly 30 years—and now (after a two-year hiatus) it’s back and better than ever in The 2012 Moon Almanac  For anyone who’s marveled at or been guided by the moon— amateur astronomers, gardeners, fishermen, hunters, and the millions who observe the moon for cultural or religious reasons  Provides sky watchers more detailed lunar information than is readily available elsewhere  The moon is different every night—and this almanac is a handy reference for what it’s doing every day of the year  10-copy counter display: $69.50 U.S./$85.95 Can. Forks Over Knives

THE PLANT-BASED WAY TO HEALTH Edited by Gene Stone Foreword by T. Colin Campbell, PhD, and Caldwell Esselstyn, Jr., MD

SHIPS IN JUNE!

The official how-to companion to the new feature documentary Forks Over Knives—an accessible, practical guide to reaping the benefits of a whole foods, plant-based diet, with 125 recipes Forks Over Knives, the new feature documentary opening in theatrical release in May 2011, examines the profound claim that most, if not all, of the degenerative diseases that afflict us can be controlled, or even reversed, by bypassing animal-based and processed foods. Now this official how-to companion gives everyone the tools to adopt and fully enjoy the benefits of the plant-based diet the film advocates. Readers learn the essential reasons this way of eating is good for us (and for animals and the environment), as well as more about the “faces” of Forks Over Knives, including Cornell scientist and The China Study author Dr. T. Colin Campbell, longtime Cleveland Clinic surgeon Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn (author of Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease), Dr. Neal Barnard, Dr. John McDougall, Rip Esselstyn (author of The Engine 2 Diet), and Farm Sanctuary founder Gene Baur, among others. Resources for grocery shopping and cooking and 125 recipes—covering breakfast (Blackberry Lemon Muffins), snacks and appetizers (Pea Guacamole), soups (Smoky Black Bean), salads (Mediterranean Quinoa), mains (Plant-Powered Polenta Pizza), sides (Sweet Potato Fries), and desserts (Raspberry Pear Crisp)—will put readers well along on the road to better health. Editor GENE STONE is the author of The Secrets of People Who Never Get Sick and the coauthor, with Rip Esselstyn, of The Engine 2 Diet. Stone, who has written or ghostwritten more than 30 books and numerous magazine articles, lives in New York and follows a plantbased diet. T. COLIN CAMPBELL, PHD, is the coauthor of The China Study, the project director of the China-Oxford-Cornell Diet and Health Project (the China Study), and the Jacob Gould Schurman Professor Emeritus of nutritional biochemistry at Cornell University. In more than 40 years of research, Dr. Campbell has received more than 70 grant-years of peer-reviewed research funding and authored more than 300 research papers. CALDWELL ESSELSTYN, JR., MD, was a researcher and clinician at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation for more than thirty-five years, where he was a member of the board of governors and president of the staff. Dr. Esselstyn served as the president of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons and organized the first National Conference on the Elimination of Coronary Artery Disease. He is the author of Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease. 2 • theexperimentpublishing.com

GARDENING & NATURE

One Magic Square THE EASY, ORGANIC WAY TO GROW YOUR OWN FOOD ON A 3-FOOT SQUARE Lolo Houbein “So many gardening books feature plants’ mile-long Latin names and confusing charts. Not this one. Its easy-to-follow instructions, diagrams, and photos inspire desire to grow good-for-the-body fresh produce.” —The Virginian-Pilot “One Magic Square . . . enchants on many levels. Veggie gardeners (especially rookies) will benefit from Houbein’s knowledge, which is informed by science and folk wisdom, as well as the breadth of its content (growing information, 30 design plots, many recipes). This single line could sustain us for life: ‘Never garden in a mood of wanting to control everything.’”

—Chicago Tribune

LOLO HOUBEIN first learned about growing fruits and vegetables from her Uncle Wim, whose food garden saved the family during the last years of World War II in war-torn Holland. In 1958, she emigrated to Australia with her husband and children. She studied literature and anthropology at the universities of Adelaide and Papua New Guinea, and has written numerous books and articles on humanitarian and conservation topics. Houbein lives and gardens in the Adelaide Hills of Australia.

PARENTING & CHILDCARE

Baby-Led Weaning THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO INTRODUCING SOLID FOODS—AND HELPING YOUR BABY TO GROW UP A HAPPY AND CONFIDENT EATER Gill Rapley and Tracey Murkett “Nurse Rapley and freelance writer Murkett encourage parents to forgo the usual baby puree and move straight to whole foods while continuing to breastfeed primarily after a baby is six months old. Their arguments are scientifically sound, especially when it comes to muscle development in the mouth, and they address the anticipated counterarguments, e.g., the need for iron-fortified cereal at six months. If mine were little again, I would definitely try this. As long as mom is nursing, who says baby can’t eat lamb chops?” —Library Journal, starred review Family & Relationships (FAM010000) TRADE PAPERBACK ORIGINAL 5B/c x 8B/e | 256 pages | CQ 44 $14.95 U.S. | $17.95 Can. | USCO* 978-1-61519-021-8 | No. 779021 Ebook • 978-1-61519-124-6

Welcome!

Almanacs have been around for thousands of years. The concept originated as a source of information about cycles of time, espeically the movements of the Sun and Moon. The Moon itself predates the Sun as the predominate celestial time keeper, a key visible element to mark the start of months, years, and religious holidays, but tough to coordinate with the solar year.

2

In modern times, the traditional concept of almanacs has expanded to include entertainment content, trivia, and general knowledge. Meanwhile, both printed and online sources provide ready access to detailed, accurate information about the Sun and the Moon. The Moon itself has been the object of signficant scientific study, with more underway. Astronauts landed on its surface in 1969, eliminating many unknowns, but it still remains an object of mystery and superstition to many.

With this publication, we return to the origins of the almanac genre, providing a new kind of annual, a source of useful, reliable, and informative facts about the Moon and its regular cycles. This almanac has its origins in The Moon Calendar, an annual publication that was born in 1981 and continues today in a unique new format, a pull-out card attached to the back cover. Our modern culture may no longer rely on the Moon as a guide to calendar cycles, but the remnants of past wonder continue. With nothing but the unaided eye, any adult or child can share in this age-old magic, continuing our unending fascination with our nearest celestial neighbor. — Kim Long Data used in The Moon Almanac and The Moon Calendar was provided by the U.S. Naval Observatory and other sources of astronomical information. The contents were produced with the guidance of Larry Sessions, -----------------------------.

• MOON DISTANCE • The Moon orbits around the Earth on an elliptical path, an oval that puts it closer to us at some points in the lunar month. The closest point of this ellipse is the perigee; the point when it is farthest is the apogee. The distance between these two extremes is about 10 percent, enough to create a visible difference in the size of the full moon — as much as 14 degrees — wider if it falls at one extreme or the other. This effect is compounded when the full moon is rising or setting; the closeness to the horizon and the proximity to

Old Mariner’s Moon Transit Rule of Thumb A rough estimate of the Moon’s transit can be figured (to within about an hour, not including Daylight Saving Time) with this method: 1. Start with the Moon’s age in days. 2. Multiply the age by 4. 3. Divide the product by 5. 4. The whole part of the answer (the number to the left of the decimal point) is the hours past noon if 12 or less. If greater than 12, subtract 12 to get hours past midnight. 8

5. The remainder (the number to the right of the decimal point) is multiplied by 12 to produce the minutes past the hour (if larger than 60, adjust the quotient accordingly). EXAMPLE

1. Moon’s age is 11 days. 2. 11 x 4 = 44 3. 44 ÷ 5 = 8.8 4. Hours = 8 pm 5. Minutes = 8  x  12  =  48 Moon transits at about 8:48 pm.

• MOON HORIZONS • The Moon follows roughly the same path as the Sun across the sky — a virtual line known as the ecliptic. Because of the ecliptic’s tilt relative to the Earth, the Moon appears to rise at different points along the horizon from night to night and season to season. This point varies according to location, especially cities far apart from north to south. The chart at the right indicates the rising and setting points of the full moon for representative U.S. cities, measured as the azimuth (horizontal point on the horizon). North is 0°, East is 90°, South is 180°, and West is 270°. Imaginary lines rising from these points reach up to the zenith, the point directly overhead. Once above the horizon, the Moon transits overhead across the local meridian, a virtual line running from north to south. The meridianmarks the halfway point between the east and west horizons, and because the Moon is always to the south at the point when it transits, traditional almanacs called this the Moon’s “southing” or “moon up.” The moon’s transit is different

for every location — it crosses over New York City at a different time than when it crosses over Cincinnati. The transit at any given spot is about 49 minutes later every day. The only two easy constants that are easy to figure out about the transit are during the new moon and the full moon. At new moon, the Moon is directly in line with the Sun — the transit at this phase is the same as the Sun’s, about midday. At full moon, the Moon is opposite the sun — the transit at this phase is about halfway through the night.
