One of the definitions of ageism is “to regard older persons as unworthy of attention.” These photos and interviews reveal how our culture lacks representation of older adults who are transgender and gender non-conforming. Dugan and Fabbre traveled from coast to coast, across the U.S. to document these life stories.
The Face of America Magazine

To Survive on This Shore was organized by Barrett Barrera Projects. The Frost is the first museum to show this exhibition. Documenting the life stories of this important but largely underrepresented group of older adults, the people featured in these portraits have a wide variety of life narratives spanning the last ninety years. While Dugan’s earlier work focused on issues of identity, gender, and sexuality – and often on LGBTQ communities specifically – this is Dugan’s first body of work that focuses on older adults, a result of her collaboration with Fabbre.

LESLIE BARLOW
The Face of America Magazine
Leslie Barlow is an artist living and working in Minneapolis, MN. Primarily an oil painter, Barlow's current work employs the figure and narrative elements to explore complex social issues like race, multiculturalism, "otherness," representation, and identity. She investigates these through the use of the personal; often creating works depicting family, friends, people in her community, and personal experiences, to reflect the subtle and not-so-subtle integrations of these ideas into individual lives and identities. Barlow received her BFA in 2011 from the University of WisconsinStout and her MFA in 2016 from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.
The Face of America Magazine
Leslie Barlow has received great recognition from her home state of Minnesota. She appeared in the season 7 television segment of tpt's Minnesota Original, airing April 2016, was published in the "Best New Art 2016" list in Minnesota Monthly Magazine, and was published as "Artist of the Year" for 2016 in the City Pages. In both 2018 and 2016 Barlow received the Minnesota State Arts BoardArtist Initiative Grant, and in 2017 she received a Foundation Award in the Minnesota State Fair Juried Exhibition for a large oil painting from her Loving series.
The Face of America Magazine
Barlow actively exhibits her work throughout the United States and many of her pieces can be found in private and public collections. Her work can be seen at the new US Bank Stadium in downtown Minneapolis, where in 2016 she was commissioned by the Vikings team to create 6 portrait paintings of iconic Vikings players. Maintaining a vigorous studio practice, Barlow has also recently participated in artist residencies including the 3 x 5 Emerging Artist Residency at The Soap Factory (Minneapolis, MN) and she was the Artist-inResidence at Whitworth University (Spokane, WA) for the month of October, 2016. From February to May 2018, Barlow was the Artist-in-Residence at Marcy Open School, facilitated through the Marcy Arts Partnership. Her studio is located in the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District.

CERRO GORDO CALIFORNIA GHOST TOWN IN SEARCH OF A FUTURE
The Face of America Magazine
Cerro Gordo consists of 22 structures and 300 acres of land and mining permits in the Inyo Mountains (California), and was once a mining town that sprung up when silver was found in the area in 1865. It has been acquired in July 2018 by Brent Underwood, Jon Bier, and a group of Los Angeles-based investors beat out other oers, in hopes of breathing new life into the ghost town. (The property was sold by Jake Rasmuson of Bishop Real Estate.)

“We want to maintain the historic nature of the property while introducing amenities that will allow more people to enjoy this piece of American history,” Brent Underwood told the San Francisco Chronicle. “We have spent a lot of time with the current owners and caretaker to learn the history of the place. I’ve read all the books I can find on the town. I can’t express our excitement to be able to continue the care of this beautiful location.”

Introducing the triplex penthouse residence inside the revered building by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Zaha Hadid, at 520 West 28th. The vast interiors of the triplex home spans 6,853 sq. ft., totaling five-bedrooms, and halos atop the 39-unit condominium marking a final look inside the inimitable 21st century dwelling in West Chelsea.
The Face of America Magazine
“Each apartment at 520 West 28th was designed with bespoke millwork at its centre that continue the geometries of the building’s facade. These hand-crafted pieces are unique to every residence, individually designed and finished for their particular location and function. Within the penthouse, this centrepiece is manifest as the sculptural staircase that extends all three floors, connecting its interior with the large outdoor terrace. An evolution of the flowing spiral staircases within Zaha Hadid’s cultural buildings, this staircase is designed with multiple perspectives that engage perception and draw the eye from the horizontal to vertical—uniting the penthouse’s three levels with the fluid design language of the building’s facade.” Johannes Schafelner, Project Director, Zaha Hadid Architects

Meet Hannah at the front desk. Coming from New York City, passionate by social work, she came to Boulder for her studies and then worked small jobs before answering an advertisement to work at the Boulderado’s front desk. Although she’s new in this position, she already has this warm welcoming attitude that makes all the difference.
PHOTOGRAPHY: EFDLT STUDIO
To quote Creighton Smith, the General Manager: “The art of welcoming guests must be genuine. you can’t fake it, you can’t learn it”. And if the staff is so welcoming it probably has to do with the GM’s attitude as well. His office is always open for everybody. Every hotel employee is important for him and knowing each and everyone of the 200 staff members is not optional.

Solid on its foundations the Boulderado Hotel is a pure gem in the state of Colorado. Built in 1909 by the four founding fathers of Boulder City. At that time they wanted to create the most luxurious hotel to attract travelers to their city. The succeeded, as more than one hundred years after, the hotel is a destination in itself. In the lobby, you are already amazed by the imposing cherry wood deck over your head, beautifully retained in its original state, it matches with the floor original as well. Look up and admire the magnificent stainedglass ceiling, restored in the 1960’s after a strom destroyed the original one.

Working with local producers whenever he can, his kitchen serves a neat and understandable cuisine. Chef John places his pride in constantly improving and innovating in his food offers.

Rahi is a restaurant about generosity. The food is generous, the service is outstanding, and the atmosphere of the restaurant is filled with excitement and joy. This is a restaurant you know you’ll come back as soon as you walk in for the first time. We had one question lingering in our minds while tasting the food: How is it possible to make food THAT good? A pure pleasure of the senses. The Lasooni Chicken is the best chicken we ever had in a very, very long time. Juicy, spicy, perfectly cooked, it’s a dangerously addictive dish. They should place a warning on the menu. The Tangra Octopus melts in the mouth and is remarkably seasoned. Rahi is the perfect example of what contemporary Indian cuisine should be. It’s also a model for many other NYC restaurants: At the end of the day, what matters is the pure pleasure you experience while eating the food.

We are very picky about restaurant interior design. We see too frequently uninspired decoration, bland furniture, or just a lack of coherence. Nickel & Diner has a perfect interior decoration. Every detail is right and feels right. Congratulations to the interior designer for this remarkable job. We love the Art deco inspired style, with the just amount of XXIth century modernity and a dash of Shanghai 1930’s nostalgia. We had an impeccable service from Brian Burchfield, our waiter, very professional. The food is a cleanly executed classic American food -and nicely plated- that goes perfectly with the style of this contemporary diner. Selwyn Chan and Ivy Tsang, coowners, have done a wonderful job with Nickel & Diner. The quality of this restaurant shows that they are true pros in this business.

TENTH STREET HATS Founded in 1921 in Oakland, California, Tenth Street is still, after a century, a family-run American hat brand proud of its roots. Their hats are made using the same century-old techniques by skilled artisans. We love the “St Pierre” model, designed by Brooklyn. www.tenthstreethats.com
