Kelly Manning- Our inspiration behind the stylish Tattoos

Interview With

The Fashion Identity Edition:43

KELLY MANNING 1) Your favorite tattoo design you have inked.... Ans) I love this small chicken wishbone I did in a dotwork and realism style, I like how tattoos can sit on the body, redefine it and jump out of it at the same time. I enjoy the possibilities of dotwork. I quite enjoy mixing styles and pushing my limits. To do this you need friends who will let you experiment on them. I am a portrait painter and have done quite a few pet portraits which I really enjoy. I enjoy all styles, for me its about bring the character out. Kelly Manning 2) Tell us about the inking procedure. Ans) I take quite a bit of pride in my set up and a lot of care with infection control. Once I have prepared my tattoo station, applied my stencil and am ready to go.Each tattoo is different

Interviewed by Pitanjal Datta and there are many aspects to consider before starting the tattoo. I attempt to make my client as comfortable as possible and ask some questions. I always explain what I am doing before I do it, I image myself when I received my first tattoo at age 21 wondering what they are doing and if it is safe. Once my client is relaxed I take a deep breath and get into my creative zone.

I would also like to see the tattoo industry and apprenticeship recognized at as ligitimite trade with workers rights and job network support.

KELLY WITH HER CLIENT AFTER INKING A TATTOO....

The beautiful thing about tattooing a client is the idea is theirs. So you discover the context of the image through the process of creating the tattooing. With Visual Arts the context comes from extensive research, travel, experimentations, fundraising etc….. an exhausting and all consuming process. Tattoos can be art however if it is the artist’s intent and that artist can be the client, tattooist or an artist using tattooed bodies for their artwork.

ES OF INKING

The Fashion Identity Edition:43 You need to find a happy place and embrace the pain.Eat well and bring snacks, have zinc tablets regularly before your appointment, there are also pain relief creams and sprays on the market, buy them yourself and seek advice from your tattooist.- ---- KELLY MANNING

9) An important change that you would like to see or bring in the industry? Ans) I would like to see regulations within the industry. In Australia some states are trying to fight crime amongst bikie groups through the tattoo industry. There are many tattoo parlours that are still under the control on bikies where money and drugs are laundered and sold. Many tattooists are trades people and work ligitamately yet mostly un regulated. I would like to see infection control qualifications nation wide. I would also like to see the tattoo industry and apprenticeship recognized at as ligitimite trade with workers rights and job network support. 10) Your inspiration in your profession.? Ans) Everything inspire me. I generally don’t look to other tattooist’s work, only when researching technique. Ordinarily I don’t limit myself.I love

design, architecture, nature I love so many visual artists’ work which I will collage into my work. I am inspired by the body and anatomy, strong women and portraying them. I am inspired by discovering new frontiers within tattooing. I am not a purist. Unlike visual arts I am not tied into one particular subject. Its fun to just draw what ever I like and hope someone wants it.

11) A celeb on whom you would love to ink on.? Ans) Vivienne Westwood. I would love to spend an hour or ten with her to discuss design, inspiration and a climate revolution. I’d also be intrigued to see what she would want as a design. 14) A word of motivation to all our readers for "Tattoos and Piercings" Ans) Research tattoo artists, spend the time finding the one suited to your needs, and don’t try and get a cheap deal, tattoos are forever.

Tattoos

Wohooo..Thats a head tattoo. Done by none other than the one and only our very own KELLY MANNING

12) A design you thought of inking but never did? Ans) I drew a beautiful woman recently, she is holding a very large knife which slices the image in half. The bottom half is a beautiful blend of classical elements and art deco motifs.

Like trash polka style of tattooing is utilses black/grey and red.I would like to concentrate on dotwork realism. Exploring architecture and the body as canvas. Positioning tattoos to change the structure of how the body looks. I am quite interested exploring medical and cosmetic tattooing, i.e, clients whom have had mastectomies, people with pigmentation problems and so forth.

13) Your favorite Tattoo on a Celeb........? Ans) I don’t have one. To be honest its not something I have researched. For the majority the celeb tattoos I have seen are all pretty awful and lack originality, perhaps that is because fans copy them and they end up everywhere.

I do however like Cara Delevingne’s lion finger tattoo. However as a general rule I don't encourage finger tattoos as they are hard to heal and generally do not wear well.

2) What are the occasions/events for which you feel women need to How would you go through rigorous inefine the perfect tensive make overs? akeover for a Ans) Occasions / events I AN? ns) I believe there is find where women most undergo intensive perfect makeover makeovers are if they are r a man, I believe y physical changes soon to be married, you ade via a makeover find most brides want to look the best they can for ould be only detheir wedding day. Also ed by the person being a life event I feel d would differ in many women after a seriery case due to ous break up can find the eir personality, estyle and personal motivation and want to make serious changes apsired changes/alpearance wise to make rations. themselves feel better about the situation.

i feel body image and the definition of beauty is still a strong issue in the world and this industry ,although it has bettered in recent years I still feel it could make a stronger impact to show the many levels of all beauty.

Rebecca with her clients DRAX from “Guardians of the Galaxy” really impressed me with full body pieces made for his markings.

6) What is your favorite unique look that you love to do on men who go to you? Ans) For men I have done drag makeup, to special effects, to even simply covering acne scars. I always find special effects and turning guys into zombies, creatures, etc, is always my favourite as it seems once anyone is under a piece they open themselves up and play the part a lot, even if its just for fun.

9) What are the specific areas on a women's face that require the most attention for a Make Up Artist.................? Ans) I feel contouring and eyes require the most attention on a woman’s face as contouring shapes the face and the eyes are to me the main feature on the face. 10) The most special and memorable moment in your professional career would be............?

Robert Englund, Such a talented actor and amazing person. Ive had the pleasure of meeting but not yet working with him as yet.

Top Rebecca doing a makeover on a male actor for film shoot. Above Rebecca doing the make up for a model for a photo shoot.

Ve Neill,Rebecca’s inspiration in her profession

8) A MUA whom you admire........................? Ans) Ve Neill - She is such a inspiring woman who has made an amazing career in a hard industry to be in. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting her and only hope to be able to work with her in the future.

Ans) Most certainly making my move over to Los Angeles to further my study and career in makeup at CMS. The teachers, projects and work opportunities I had while there was by far the most special and rewarding.

The Fashion Identity Edition:43 11) A myth / misconception you wish to change on MAKE UP for men and women? Ans) I think a common misconception for me is that makeup is a "lie" I've noticed some males believe females who wear a lot of makeup are somewhat lying about their true appearance and makeup is some sort of a mask. I believe makeup can help people create who they are not hide themselves and be what some ignorant people would call a lie. 12) Is it possible to completely revolutionize a hair style....If yes to what extent.....?

Rebecca’s Work (Above Picture) Ans) Personally I don't do much hair myself but I'm sure there are ways to revolutionise a hair styles. 13) A common problem that people approach you for but cannot be solved through Make Up.............? Ans) A common problem is makeup is not permanent solution to confidence, and some want to feel as beautiful as they do when wearing it but don't have time, or the skills to keep it up all the time.

Makeovers with makeup are temporary, it can be done over and over but for example a hair colour change or cut would be more permanent and revolutionise ones look, makeup can be applied time and time again to also do this. Using these tools tho you can completely change ones look, confidence and style.
