Boots on the ground volunteers help grow Estes Park’s

s the town of Estes Park prepares to host its 93rd annual rodeo this summer, it is assisted by Estes Park Western Heritage, Inc., which is a non-profit group with the sole purpose to help the town put on a rodeo every year. The group of volunteers supplies about 95 percent of the “boots on the ground,” according to Mark Purdy, who is the board chairman of the group. “We are the volunteers who work with the town and plan all year to make this event a success.” If awards are anything to go by, the rodeo has become a huge success. In 2018, the rodeo was nominated by the PRCA as one of the top five medium rodeos in the country, and it was named the best arena footing in the circuit by the WPRA. In the past, the Rooftop Rodeo has been named Rodeo of the Year by the PRCA five times, and WPRA’s Rodeo of the Year in 2017, in addition to many Mountain States Circuit Finals awards. Whether attending the rodeo as a spectator or a contestant, a near Disney experience lies ahead, Purdy explained. “We take it very seriously how we treat our contestants and fans. We want them to have the best time they possibly can.” To cater to the contestants, they offer free stalls for the horses, free hookups for the trailers, and showers. There is also a world-class hospitality suite, where they can get a warm meal at night. “We have six nights of rodeo, THE FENCE POST | www.fencepost.com

and we have a number of restaurants in town that will donate the evening meals, anything from steak to lasagna. On any given night, we feed 450 people in our hospitality area, all donated by the community,” he said. The Rooftop Rodeo is also approaching its

fifth year working with Cervi Championship Rodeo, which has brought a whole new level of stock to the rodeo. Because of the improvements, the rodeo has grown from 475 to nearly 800 contestants last year. The 93-year-old rodeo is still held in the origi-

nal location. The fairgrounds were donated to the community a number of years ago by the family who owned the Stanley Hotel. Originally, the area was used as a general-purpose arena, and had a track around the outside of it. Since then, the community has upgraded the facilities by getting the dirt work right, reconfiguring the arena, and putting in new chutes and pens. The improvements were key, Purdy said. “It really helped not only our contestants, but also our fans, because the animals actually leave the chutes, come across the arena, and end up right in front of the stands. The audience has a clear view of the action, and they are not trying to look into the corners of the arena to see what is going on,” he said. As the Rooftop Rodeo becomes a more popular venue, sponsorship has grown from local businesses to regional and national sponsors. With Estes Park drawing in tourists, Purdy estimates 75 percent of the crowd has never seen a rodeo before. “They just happen to be in town, and decide they want to have that western experience,” he said.

The rodeo has drawn a crowd from every state and at least 35 countries. “Because of that, some of our national sponsors, like Dodge Trucks, would rather come here than some of the other rodeos because they know we will have people from all over, not just locally.”

This year’s Rooftop Rodeo will feature six nightly rodeo performances from Monday, July 8 through Saturday, July 13. The preshow will start at 6:30 p.m., with the rodeo following from 7-9 p.m. To help educate the audience about rodeo, the Rooftop Rodeo also hosts a Behind the Chutes Tour. A certain number of people are allowed behind the chutes every night for a complete tour of that area, Purdy said. They meet the stock contractor and the announcer, and get an up close and personal view of the horses and bulls. They can even get back in the chutes and see how it works. “When 75 percent of our audience has never been to a rodeo, this is pretty interesting to them,” Purdy said. Special events are held throughout the week in conjunction with the rodeo. “For example, Monday night is domestic

violence awareness. We work with one of the local shelters to raise money for those who are in trouble and need it,” Purdy said. “We also have a night where we

honor the military, and Saturday is Pink Night, where we raise money for our local hospital to fight cancer.” As part of Pink Night, they hold a contest where some of the ladies in town, regardless of age, can compete for the title of Mrs. Rooftop Rodeo. They sell votes, and whoever raises the most money wins the title. “The first year we did it, we raised $5,000, the next year it was $15,000, and last year we raised $45,000. It is something we are very proud of,” Purdy said. Even the youngest contestants can compete in the rodeo in the kid’s mutton bustin’, which has a size and weight limit. During the weekend

performance, they also hold a cash catch, where $5 bills are attached to sheep, and the children chase the sheep to catch their $5. “Our clown and barrelman is Justin Rumford, who has been named National Rodeo Clown of the Year six times. He does a lot of really fun stuff, and performs acts to keep our crowd engaged in the rodeo,” Purdy said.

During the last four years, the Rooftop Rodeo Saturday night performance has been broadcast on the Wrangler Network. This year, PRCA has an online broadcast network, so four to six of the performances will be broadcast on PRTV, which sells subscriptions and works with CBS Interactive, Purdy says. “It allows you to watch the rodeo on your phone.”

Prorodeolive.com, which has a XM radio program and weekly Western Roundup program will also provide programing from the rodeo. For more information about the Rooftop Rodeo or to purchase tickets, see their website, rooftopprorodeo.com. a

f you find yourself passing through Colorado during the weekend of June 21, head to Hugo and get yourself a ticket to The Colorado Championship Ranch Rodeo. This year, in their 18th year of the event, the Colorado Championship Ranch Rodeo is offering more fun than ever before. This WCRA-sanctioned ranch rodeo is full of tradition, history, and entertainment. Working cowboys from surrounding states and as far as Texas will be competing in this year’s event. Each year, one team from each WCRA sanctioned rodeo earns a spot to compete for the Champion World Title in Amarillo, TX. “In working with the WCRA we are providing that ranching history and heritage,” said Tina Waite, Colorado Championship Ranch Rodeo secretary. If you have never been to a ranch rodeo, this is unlike any PRCA sanctioned rodeo you might have seen. This is the history of the real ranch cowboy. Most of the competitors work day in and day out

on the family ranch, and they find time to compete in this event to spend some time in town with their families for a bit of entertainment. A ranch rodeo differs from a traditional rodeo in a few different ways. The contestants of ranch rodeos are not pro cowboys, rather, they are fulltime ranch hands who are competing with the same equipment they use every day for work. To obtain a WCRA card cowboys have to prove they are full time employees of a ranch, and they have to have a WCRA card to compete in the Colorado Championship Ranch Rodeo. Not only can you find yourself a seat in the stands to watch this cultural event, but there’s plenty of other fun to be had as well. A huge western trade show both days, dance on Friday night, bronc riding on Saturday, and a chuckwagon cookoff are just a few of the things that will keep you entertained. About six chuckwagons are scheduled to attend the 2018 event and only 250 tickets are being sold, so you better act fast.

“It just keeps growing,” said Waite about the event. “We are about to outgrow our weekend.” This year, a concert hosted by the newly established Colorado Prairie Arts and Music Council (CPAM) will be held on Saturday night of the Colorado Championship Ranch Rodeo weekend. This concert is one of two in the 2019 Colorado Prairie Music Festival lineup. This is the third year of the Colorado Prairie Music Festival, but the first year of the CPAM non-profit. The music festival started as a project of the Lincoln County Tourism board. With the formation of CPAM, the future of the music festival is more grounded. “We wanted to highlight the Western heritage the Colorado has to offer,” said Megan Mosher, CPAM board member. Lincoln County, Colorado is predominately cattle country. The strong heritage in the Colorado Championship Ranch Rodeo and the cowboy way of life in the area seemed to be the perfect place for the CPAM to host their event

“Our values and mission align a lot,” said Mosher, “We are targeting the same audience, and it made sense for us to share the experience with those audiences and integrate them.” Mosher encourages people who have never been to ranch rodeo to see it for themselves. “I think most people are surprised at how different it is from regular rodeo, how enjoyable it is a spectator,” said Mosher In the Eastern Plains of Colorado, Mosher believes the “outback” of the state is often overlooked. The goal of CPAM is to highlight the western heritage that region has to offer. In partnering with the Colorado Championship Ranch Rodeo, Mosher says this is a big deal.

“The Colorado Championship Ranch Rodeo has a ton of history and respect, you want to shout it from the rooftops that your county is putting on an event like this,” said Mosher Waite is proud of her event as well. She is impressed with how much of a life of its own this event has taken on, and how well it has grown in the community. Not only is there so much to do for anyone that attends the event, the ranch rodeo produces a quality competition. Last year, The Colorado Championship Ranch Rodeo was honored with the Inaugural WCRA Ranch Rodeo of the Year award. “This is a great event,” said Waite, “We are giving each cowboy a chance to do something that

most people think of a cowboy band they don’t think about the arts, but there’s a lot more to it than that. Waite agrees that the cowboy mentality and culture must live on. So if you find yourself in Lincoln County, Colorado the weekend of June 21, definitely get yourself some tickets to attend the Colorado Championship Ranch Rodeo. You can find tickets and a complete list of events at www.coloradochampionshipranchrodeo. com and concert tickets will be available at coloradoprairiemusicfest.com. a

represents them. Both women believe in the partnership between their entities is good for the weekend overall. Mosher herself is married to a fourth-generation rancher, and she believes the western heritage is amplified by the bands that are scheduled to play at the music festival. A full list of musicians will be announced next month, as well as headliners for the second event of the Colorado Prairie Music Festival to be held at the Lincoln County Fair in place of the demolition derby. Mosher says the entire eastern plains of Colorado could benefit from more of fine arts. When

The partk in central Nebraska has been proudly helping Nebraskans and thousands of visitors enjoy family time together for well over a half-century. Now home to the Nebraska State Fair for the past 10 years in Grand Island, Fonner Park flourishes through fair season and also showcases

winter horse racing, rodeos and antique car shows throughout the year. Nebraska State Fair celebrates its 10th year in Grand Island in 2019, which also marks its 150 anniversary. The 11-day fair will be Aug. 23 to Sept. In a statement, Roger Steele, mayor of Grand Island said, “Nebraska’s State Fair represents Nebraska’s long agricultural heritage as an innovator

in manufacturing and technology. The State Fair is lots of fun for all. Grand Island is proud that this is the 10th anniversary of the Nebraska State Fair in Grand Island. We look forward to welcoming all Nebraskans to our city.” As officials prepare to host this year’s event, there are several new layers to the State Fair. “We averaged seven concerts per fair in past years, but this year we’ll offer 12 concerts in 11 days. We also moved the concerts indoors to the Heartland Event Center,” said Nebraska State Fair executive director Lori Cox. Tickets for the Hot Country, Red Dirt and Rock (bundled) concerts at the fair are already selling like fried Twinkies. There will also be a Christian music concert. Country star Trace Adkins will perform a Labor Day

tribute to veterans on Sept. 2. For equine enthusiasts, there’s a new roughstock rodeo on opening weekend where audience members contribute to the contestants’ scores, using an app on their smartphones. “We’ll have the first State Fair exhibition polo match with polo ponies, and new equine attractions such as The Young Living Hitch Percherons and horseback riding for families all week,” said Cox, who grew up on a wheat and barley farm in Montana with feeder calves and was active in 4-H from youth to college. Also new in 2019, the State Fair has established an admission rate of $5 every day for senior citizens (ages 60+.) A popular agricultural highlight is the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s outdoor and indoor “Raising Camels break from the starting gate in the first-ever Dinsdale Dashers of the Dessert Camel Race, April 7, 2019. rdan Olesi CEO, jockey Jo Bruce Swihar t Nebraska” exhibit showcasing corn, soybean and livestock growers. Featured will be kiosks, a simulator, movie theater, stages for cooking demonstrations and interactive spaces for kids. The fair team works two years in advance to prepare for the fair, focusing now on 2020 and 2021. “We employ 20 people full-time and an additional 250 seasonal employees; contributing to the local economy,” said Cox. A thousand volunteers come from Hall County and the immediate region. Others still come from Lincoln, from the days

that the Fair resided there, and still others travel from across Nebraska. The Nebraska State Fair relocated from Lincoln in part due to aging infrastructure. “Also, UNL (University of Nebraska-Lincoln) was searching for room for their now-developed Innovation Campus, so the Nebraska State Fair Board, with support from the Nebraska legislature, began searching for a new home. Through a statewide bidding process, Grand Island was successful and the rest is history,” said Cox. Attendance growth is reported to be

exceptional since the move. Sensitive to Nebraska’s historic March 2019 flooding, Nebraska State Fair and the Fonner Park grounds provided a relief center to serve Nebraska flood victims, as a distribution area for hay, fencing materials and supplies. “Nebraska Air National Guard helicopters were picking up round bales and making drops in flood-affected areas,” said Fonner Park’s chief of operations Chris Kotulak. Many stories will be forever told about the kindness of fellow farmers and ranchers. “Our biggest need now is for folks to speak up and take what’s been given. Donors want to make sure their gifts are getting to those people in need,” said Greg Harder, chief of business operations for the state fair. Fonner Park is a year-round, multi-faceted facility comprised of the Heartland Events Center, which includes the 6,000-seat Eihusen Arena and also the Bosselman Conference Center, which provides 8,000 square feet of conference space. Fonner Park also offers Fonner Keno, which is home to several keno facilities throughout Grand Island. Year-round pari-mutuel wagering on horse races is available at the Finish Line Restaurant & Sports Lounge, which are open daily. Racing is simulcast around the world. Interestingly, and uniquely,

Thoroughbred racing at Fonner Park ostrich and camel races were held this year at Fonner Park, and were a huge hit. “We did it for the first time April 7, 2019. It brought us the largest crowd ever at Fonner Park, with 12,000 (typically we average 8,000 people,)” said Kotulak. “We ran four horse races, then a camel race, followed by another horse race, and concluded with an ostrich race, and then three more horse races.” Fonner Park is named after Gus Fonner, born in 1873, and a celebrated bronc rider at many rodeos. He’s remembered for riding with Buffalo Bill Cody’s Wild West Show. It was Gus, who sold 80 acres of his O.K. farm to create a venue to showcase agriculture, livestock and community 54

events. Through Gus’s efforts thoroughbred horse racing has been at Fonner Park since 1954. Gus’s Native American art collection is displayed in the Gus Fonner Memorial Rotunda in the Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer near Fonner Park. Fonner Park management continues to have robust Nebraska history. A Fonner Park employee since 1976, Bruce Swihart, is now their CEO, and carries on the Swihart name. Bruce is the son of longtime Fonner Park general manager Al Swihart, who was credited with developing Fonner Park into a major facility, until his death in 1983. Al Swihart was ultimately named The Grand Island Independent newspaper’s Man of the

Year in 1983. Numerous thoroughbred horses that ran at Fonner Park were bred and raised in Nebraska. Some early star horses were Amadevil, Roman Zipper, Ogatual and Bold Accent, followed by champions: Who Doctor Who, Orphan Kist, Dazzling Falls and Cindy’s Hero. “Skunktail, Leaping Plum, Diamond Joe and World Famous Sam T were also horses who raced here at Fonner Park,” said Kotulak. “Jockeys, breeders, owners and trainers have also won races at Fonner Park. Local Jeff ‘Whitey’ Richardson has run horses in the Kentucky Derby and Breeders’ Cup, and won the 2018 $1.25 million dollar Travers Stakes with Catholic Boy,”

An all-time record attendance of 12,000 enjoyed camel and ostrich racing at Fonner Park on 4.7.2019. Courtesy Fonner Park said Kotulak. Many of these stars are proudly recognized in the Nebraska Horse Racing Hall of Fame, located on the main floor of Fonner Park’s grandstand. It includes the Van Berg Family

Memorial established to honor horse trainers Marion Van Berg and his son Jack Van Berg. The exhibits are free. “Fonner Park has been referred to as the giant V-8 engine that motivates Grand Island and

central Nebraska,” said Kotulak. “With thoroughbred racing, the Heartland events center, the State Fair and livestock and exhibition buildings, we are presenting some form of entertainment 52 weeks of the year.” a

Jake Clark’s Mule Days By Hannah Johlman

SUMMER EVENTS 2019

THE FENCE POST | www.fencepost.com

J

ake Clark’s Mule Days began in 1997 as an all mule rodeo for family and friends to gather and show off their animals. Twenty-two years later, the week-long event held at the Big Boulder Ranch in Ralston, Wyoming is famous for showcasing the many abilities of the American Saddle Mule and includes mule training and packing clinics, a team sorting competition, jackpot team roping and barrel racing, mounted shooting competition, ranch mule competition, pack mule race, all mule parade, all mule rodeo and finally, the Select Saddle Mule Auction. It was during the 1970s when Jake Clark realized that mules were selling cheaper than horses, and having grown up with horses, Jake only used mules as pack animals for his outfitting business near Powell, Wyoming. He also noticed while they were in the mountains it was his horses

that were working hard while the pack mules stood around and ate. “They didn’t have a lot that were being trained back them, most were pack animals, but he said, “If we can pack them, we can ride them,’” says Kay Clark, Jake’s wife. In the beginning, the Clarks didn’t look at the quality of mares or jacks they were using to breed mules very much, but Kay says that it didn’t take long to learn. “When you start breeding to better quality horses, you get better quality mules,” she says. “Just like horses, it’s a lot of the way the mare is and a lot of the way a jack is too. Some are just better-minded.” The Clarks tried crossing jacks with draft and draft cross horses, which resulted in mules with good, easy going temperaments for guests to ride, but they found that for the majority of their needs, THE FENCE POST | www.fencepost.com

Quarter Horses were the best. As the Clarks’ appreciation for mules grew, they began to see mules being promoted as funny farm animals, dressed up in clothing and wearing straw hats. Jake decided that wasn’t a good way to portray how good mules could be, so he decided to put on an all mule rodeo to show off their abilities. Jake Clark’s Mule Days was born. The following year a mule sale was added to the weekend’s agenda. There were some outside consignors, but most of the mules had been used in the Clarks’ outfitting business. “The high selling mule that first year went for $7,000,” Kay says. “That was unheard of, I think people didn’t realize they could even bring that, then when more people heard about it and our mules started getting trained better, we just kept having better mules. We’ve had calls from breeders that wanted to find out what kind of mules we were look-

64

SUMMER EVENTS 2019

ing for and why that mule would bring so much.” Twenty-one years later, there are 85 mules consigned to the 2019 Select Saddle Mule Auction, and the Clarks think that keeping the sale around that size seems to produce better quality mules and better prices for the buyers. “Jeff and Christina Tift have been consigning mules since day one,” Kay says. “He understands the mules and knows what it takes to get them over certain little quirks and get them past that so they act right. He’ll ride them for a year or two before he sells them so he can tell people what they are and if they do have a flaw, he knows what it is.” The Clarks encourage their consignors to be open and honest with buyers and find out what possible buyers are looking for in a mule, then help them find the right mule to fit. Where one buyer might want a mule that can step out and move, the next might

THE FENCE POST | www.fencepost.com

not have much experience and be wanting a slower mule to just meander. “Our consignors have jobs where the mules need to be rode, so they really know these animals and they’re not just buying one right before the sale and then selling it the next day,” Kay says. “It really gives them incentive to do what’s right for the buyers.” Every sale mule is required to go through a full trail course the day before the sale as a sort of preview, to show what the mules will or will not handle. The course includes cattle, standing patiently, crossing logs, water, a bridge and leading a pack string, although leading the pack string is just a benefit, not a requirement. Over the years, the event has grown from a weekend of activities to a full week of clinics and competitions. “With more people coming and more interest in doing other

things, we thought you know, some people like to shoot off their mules so we started doing the mounted shooting, we added team sorting after that,” Kay says. Many more events were soon to follow, along with a Friday Night Auction to raise money for the Cody Country Outfitters scholarship fund and the local 4-H clubs and FFA chapter. The Clarks have seen many mules come and go over the years, but there are a few that have stood out to Kay, including one that they donated to an auction benefitting the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation that sold for $32,000. The buyer didn’t have

a place to keep it, so the mule went home with the Clarks who used her until she got to the age where she needed to be semi-retired. “We try to donate about one mule every year,” Kay says. “It helps our business and it has helped the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation raise about $500,000 over the last 25 years.” While the mule industry has grown and changed since the 1970s, Kay says that the animals that have been a part of the Clark family’s livelihood have always, and continue to amaze her with their intelligence and demeanor.

“We can take one mare with us and picket her when we’re in the mountains, turn all the mules loose and they assign their pecking order as far as where they want to be near the mare, they latch on to her and they will not leave that mare,” Kay says. “Some will be within a foot or two of the mare, others are maybe 30 to 50 feet away, but once we go catch the mare and bring her back to camp, all we have to do is catch her and mules come out of the woodwork, they just single file in the right order into camp and it’s just amazing, they’re incredible animals, every time I see it I am just amazed.” a
