Welcome to the 2024 NILE. We are proud to host this event for the 57th year. As a participant in the NILE you are helping to promote the western lifestyle and the agriculture way of life.
Montana has a long and deep tradition in the livestock and agricultural world and we are proud to display our support for this way of life through the events and participants of this year’s NILE.
We trust your time at the 2024 NILE will be a positive experience. Our staff takes great pride in planning and executing all the events that make up the entirety of the NILE all year long. The reward for us is when the participants and their families arrive here every year in midOctober. For us, the interacting with NILE participants is the most fulfilling part of our 12-month process of producing the NILE each year.

am excited to be with you for this year’s NILE. We have a full lineup of events within the Equine Department. Our AQHA and All-Breed Ranch Horse classes will once again kick off our equine events and they will be held at Miller’s Horse Palace. We have 2 days of barrel racing action and we added an open breakaway roping event. We also added a Beginner Horse Camp, which will be held in the First Interstate Arena on Wednesday, October 16th. There will be 2 separate sessions to learn about basic safety, horse care and maintenance, and beginner horsemanship. We did a lot of outreach this past year regarding our Gold Buckle Horse Sale and I am happy to see an increase in the number of performance bred horses consigned to the sale. Don’t forget about our NILE ranch horse futurity that is connected to our sale and our Stallion Incentive Program. We will end the NILE with some family friendly ranch rodeo action. NILE Gold Buckle Futurity

The excitement of purchasing a horse or prospect from the Gold Buckle Select Prospect & Ranch Horse Sale doesn’t end when the gavel drops. Each horse purchased from the sale has the exclusive opportunity to compete in a variety of events included in the Gold Buckle Futurity.
Eligible horses include those that have been consigned to the sale at the NILE (either sold or not sold) as well as offspring of enrolled stallions. The list of stallions can be found at the beginning of this sale catalog.
Gold Buckle Futurity entrants can show horses ranging from a weanling to an aged horse. All classes have

money added plus the entries, according to Equine Programs Director, Teri Nistler. Last year, the Gold Buckle Futurities paid out well over $14,000, with an 85/15 split between owner and breeder.
“Part of my goal is making everybody aware that they can bring these horses back and show them, whether they’re a baby or a show horse. It’s a great opportunity for them, especially if they’re local. It’s something else they can do with their horse and a goal to work towards,” Nistler said.
The futurities are split into two main events: ranch horse and barrel race.
RANCH HORSE
The Ranch Horse event is open to all ages, featuring age-appropriate judged classes, slated for Oct. 17.
Weanlings are shown strictly in halter and are judged on ranch conformation, consisting of the “most positive combination of balance, structural correctness, and movement with appropriate breed and sex characteristics and adequate muscling.”
Yearlings are shown on the ground in the round pen. Again, entrants are judged on ranch conformation. In addition, a timed round pen exhibition is judged based upon the yearling’s movement, training, and manners.
Two-year-olds compete in a reining and trail course class, which may include trotting over poles, bridge, gate, picking up and carrying a slicker, loading in trailer, log drag, and loping both directions.
Three-year-olds are able to compete in a Limited Working Ranch Horse, which consists of a box-drive
style cow horse class. Nistler said, “We’re trying to make this as accessible as we can for everyone.” As fence work is a difficult maneuver, it was removed from this class in order to give contestants more time to master cow horse skills.
Four- and five-year-olds (and up) have the option to continue showing in the Limited Working Ranch Horse or advance to the Working Ranch Horse class, which consists of a reining pattern, box work, and fence work.
Lastly, every futurity contestant may also enter a trail class.
Nistler knows of one contestant who bought their show horse as a yearling from the NILE sale and has continued entering the Gold Buckle Futurity every year since. Another loyal NILE buyer purposefully purchases colts from the sale in order to be eligible to show in the Gold Buckle Futurity.
BARREL RACE
The Gold Buckle Barrel Racing Futurity consists of three divisions: Futurity (5 & Under), Derby (6-7 years), and Maturity (8 and older). It is run in conjunction with the Runnin’ the Rims barrel race, produced by Miller Ranch Productions, scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 13 at the First Interstate Arena.
Entrants can choose to roll their time from the Open or run again for the Gold Buckle Futurity. $1,500 is added to the Open Race, with more money added for Gold Buckle eligible horses.
Entry fees are staggered based upon when they are submitted. More information can be found at thenile.org.
FUTURITIES ARE THE FUTURE
Whereas not everyone has the means to enter large, national futurities, the NILE Gold Buckle Futurity gives anyone a chance to partake in the exciting world of futurity horses. “It gives kind of a sense of community, as well,” said Nistler. Many contestants return annually for the opportunity to compete.
Each year, the Gold Buckle Incentive stallion roster grows stronger and includes more performance stallions, so opportunities to invest in a futurity colt is better than ever.
Additionally, Nistler is eager to offer this year’s sale selection to the public. “I’m super excited about that this year. We have some really nice horses and I’m really happy to see them,” she said.

NILE Versatility Ranch Horse, Ranching Heritage Gains Popularity
The NILE once again has been recognized as an AQHA Top 10 Ranch Horse Versatility Show, a prestigious acknowledgement in a worldwide organization. Each year, the event is held at Miller’s Horse Palace in Laurel.
Though the NILE has hosted the show for many years and was one of the original six premier shows of its kind, it continues to grow. This may be due in part to the AQHA’s increased support for ranch horse breeding programs and events through the Ranching Heritage program.
Last year’s NILE Versatility Ranch Horse champion Dean Barent said, “The Versatility Ranch Horse and the Ranch Heritage shows are getting bigger and bigger all the time. The AQHA has done a good job of promoting and putting money into that Ranching Heritage [program].”
In fact, the NILE is one of the premier shows toward which the AQHA puts forth added money. “That makes it worth it,” Barent said. He has been showing at the NILE for over a decade.

Barent won last year’s All Around aboard Haidas Wild Cat “Sylvester” owned by Lesli Glen of Billings. Sylvester is a Gold Buckle Futurity enrolled stallion. Steven Bond of Worden, Montana trained Sylvester, but was not able to make the NILE last year due to entering another show. Barent and Sylvester won four of the six total classes, including reining, cutting, cow work, and conformation. Placing in the trail and ranch riding propelled him to the top of the leaderboard.
Barent also showed a Ranching Heritage horse of his own, which he purchased from Pieper Red Angus
of Hay Springs, Nebraska. Barent and PR This Cats A Dandy placed third in the Junior Cow Work and third in the Junior Ranch Trail. He enjoys purchasing Ranching Heritage horses for the extra opportunity to enter and win money.
“People are starting to look at that, buying Ranching Heritage horses just because you can go win your money back. And they’re breeders that have been in the business a while, so they usually have a solid foundation,” Barent said. In general, Ranching Heritage Challenges can consist of events including working

ranch horse, ranch riding, team roping, ranch cutting, barrel racing, breakaway roping, and steer stopping. At the NILE, eligible horses can enter most of these events.
For a breeding program to be eligible for the Ranching Heritage, “ranches must be members of AQHA and their ranch remudas must consist of American Quarter Horses, which must be used primarily to work ranch cattle. The ranch must own at least five American Quarter Horse mares that are used to produce the remuda, and the ranch must have received at least an AQHA 10-year breeder award,” according to the AQHA. Eligible horses have an insignia on their registered papers.
To illustrate how important the NILE Versatility Ranch Horse show is to avid contestants, Barent knows that Box O Quarter Horses of Gordon, Nebraska showed at the Snaffle Bit Futurity in Fort Worth, Texas, then drove two days to Billings to show
at the NILE. “When you have that type of money up for grabs, people will get there,” he said.
Last year, Barent also took advantage of the Gold Buckle Futurity ranch horse division, held at the First Interstate Arena on a separate day. He showed two-year-old Chromed Out Pepto, also bred by Lesli Glen. Classes for two-year-olds consist of a trail and reining pattern, and Barent placed third overall. “The NILE has done a great job of providing incentive for people to bring those horses back and show them,” he said.
A retired teacher, Barent enjoys training horses every day for a “living.” He said, “When you have really good horses, your day goes really well. When you have fun people show up to ride those horses, it goes even better. It’s a pretty good gig for a retired guy.”
Nominations include eligibility for the stallion and all his offspring to compete in the NILE Gold Buckle Events, including both the ranch horse futurity and the barrel race.

Toasted At Midnight (aka Toast) is a 2019 palomino gelding that we raised and has done everything you can think of on the ranch. He has a lot of potential and bred to become a super nice performance horse. His sire, Turn Again Frenchman, has won over $100,000 in the barrel pen and team roping. Toast is very athletic and super smooth to ride. He is good to shoe and has been hauled all over the country as a pickup horse. He also has been to Las Vegas the last couple of years working the NFR penning back livestock and even has been used in the contestant grand entry, so he has seen all the big lights and sounds in some of the biggest arenas around. We have used him as a ranch horse here at the ranch and he is Luke’s go to horse if something needs to be doctored, a branding, or working another colt.
