There is a Difference!

Cook Angus program is based on a moderate functional female that breeds every year and raises a quality calf requiring limited resources. Cows that are structurally sound, fertile, good feet/udders, and temperament with mothering ability. Longevity is a profitable trait. Several cow families in our herd have multi-generations producing. We do not waiver our core values for open, hard keeping, poor udder, bad footed, high headed cows. This past year the consistency continues to hold strong, 96% exposed cows bred in a 50-day window.

Herd sires are home raised or meticulously selected from proven programs to enhance the consistent quality of like kind with profitability. We don’t chase fads or numbers. We do raise cattle that live in a harsh, native environment, take care of themselves and work for us.

It is our pledge and sincere goal to provide our customers with quality service and cattle that are functional, low input, and enjoyable to raise. The program stays the same. Our cattle graze on native and improved pastures. Cows are usually fed hay and DDG’s or ADM Roughage Buster as needed in winter to maintain condition. Salt and mineral are free choice year-round. Registered and commercial cows run together, except at breeding. We use some home raised bulls on both commercial and registered cattle.

This year’s sale offering was AI’d using outside sires from proven programs. Cleaned up with home raised bulls and our standby herd sires from proven programs, that have foundation female’s multiple generations behind them. Providing a select new influence that is in line with our program and goals.

This year’s sale we will offer 27, 2-year-old bulls with a select group of yearling bulls, many suitable for heifers. The bulls were bred, raised, and grown on Rosebud Creek. Two-year-olds summer on native pasture through Dec, 7. Brought in to be hand fed 4lbs of ddg’s, 3lbs challenger pellets and chopped hay in a 30 acre pasture. The 12 yearling bulls are hand fed a grower ration of CHS Bull Challenger, DDGs, Flax Lick tubs and chopped hay. The EPD’s are estimations: formulated using sire and dam EPD’s. We emphasize functional and economical traits rather than chasing numbers. The bull calves have not been registered, if you need a bull registered let us know and we will register at our cost, except those listed as commercial.

We continue our pledge and responsibility in raising quality Angus cattle for all of our friends, old and new. We appreciate all the support from family, neighbors and friends. If there is anything we can help with or any information we can provide; it would be our privilege to visit with you. Please give us a call or email.

Thank you to the McNamee family for all of their support and continued belief in our program.

Thoughts and Prayers to all!!!

This is an AI sire we used for his style, shape, and female-producing ability. When asking Ben (Loyning) about him, Equinox has great feet, a quiet disposition and would make beautiful cows. He goes back to 1116 and complements our Shoshone breeding wonderfully. His first daughters will calve this spring.

Purchased from McCumber Angus in 2022. These are his first calves to hit the ground and they have all stood out. 1119 first daughters will calve this spring, they have a lot of style and shape to them. These calves have impressive mass, muscle, and rib dimension just like their sire. 1119 was used heavy this year in a mulit sire group last summer, never seen him in the same spot. Dam of 1119 goes back to an outstanding cow family from McCumber Angus that has feminine, deep rib and easy fleshing productive females.

9119 was a bull we really liked from the 2020 McCumber bull sale. Redland Angus purchased the bull and use him in their cow herd. This bull will add a lot of depth and fleshing ability to a cow herd. We feel his daughters are going to be great do-it-yourself cows. Pictured is “255” (reg # 20814261), this is a son of 9119 that we used on our heifers. We are very excited for the future of his offspring in our program as we feel he will be our next herd builder with the likes of “165” and “248”.

1131 We bought this bull from Jack in 2022. He is out of McNamees Sweet Sarah cow family and really caught our eye at

Our pick at the 2020 Ohlde Cattle Company sale. This Blue Print son offers moderate birth with exceptional weaning and yearling performance. Very thick, deep bull with a good disposition. Backed by proven OCC genetics. OCC Focus 813F, OCC Paxton, OCC Moderator.

Two- year-old bulls are virgin, except the bulls we used. They will be trich tested before the sale, and will have passed a fertility and semen test prior to the sale. Yearling bulls will be fertility and semen tested, vaccinated with Multi Min 90 and Foot Rot prior to delivery. All bulls have had full vaccination program along with being poured. If a yearling bull does not pass a test, we will replace him with a bull of equal value or re-

fund your money. Cook Angus retains half semen interest in all bulls selling.

Two-year-old bulls can be taken home sale day for a $50 head discount or will be delivered as soon as possible after the sale. Will work with buyers on delivery.

Yearling bulls will be taken back to our ranch and fed until May 1st then delivered, again working with buyer.

Welcome from the McNamees!

Welcome to our 37th annual production sale. We are continuing to hold the sale at Miles City Livestock Commission. We really liked how it’s worked for us all, and we appreciate the job Bart, Misty and crew do for us.

The two-year-old bulls we’ll be selling are all virgin bulls that we’ve never offered for sale. They were wintered out in a larger pasture and fed the bull challenger pellets and ground hay last year. They were summered out on grass, and as of December 1st they are still out in a section pasture, grazing and getting Muggli cake.

The yearling bulls are mostly suitable for heifers. They will be wintered for free and delivered in the spring after they’ve passed a semen test. Any bull that doesn’t semen test will be replaced from the group of bulls we’re keeping for two-year-olds to be sold next year. We guarantee you will be satisfied with the replacement bull or your money will be refunded.

We will be selling 25 head of mostly three-year-old (there are a couple four-year-old) home raised, bred F1 badly cows. All have raised calves successfully. Most of these cows are the ones we bought back from Pennington’s at last year’s bull sale. They are all bred to McNamee Angus or Cook Angus bulls. We are selling them as we just don’t have the pastures to breed them in separately.

Riley Olson and his fiancé, Peyton Kimmel are still working with us. They have been indispensable and an absolute joy to have here. Riley is a great hand on a horse and a superb young man, and we are very excited to see how the horse end of our program continues to develop with him here. We have all decided to ride our young horses for one additional year and sell them as nicely started 4-year-olds. That means there are no horses for sale this year. We are still standing our stud, Reysed In Style, at the ranch and are really impressed with his first colt crop. Please feel free to ask for additional information if interested.

Videos of the bulls and all the bred cattle will be available to view through Western Ag Reporter, Tristate Livestock News and Horizon Marketing Agency.

We’re still using the star rating for calving ease. 4-star bulls are what we consider sleep all night calving ease bulls. The 3-star bulls may give you a little more at birth and possibly a little more weight at weaning time.

We’ll be serving coffee and food in the cafeteria of MCLC all day so come and spend the day. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask any one of us. Thank you for your support and interest in these bulls and our program.

We usually lead off our herd sires with 7013, but as good as 7013 was, we have really bred his sire 1116, more through four different sons: 7013, 6936, 6141, and 6916. We have also kept and used numerous grandsons and great grandsons of his. To our way of thinking, 1116 will go down as the most influential bull we’ve used in our 30+ years breeding cattle. He was bred and raised by Dennis and Erica Voss of Horse Butte Ranch. In 1116, we have been able to find cattle that do so many things well for us. From the beautifully maternal females that last in our environment and under our management, to the functional, masculine males that get out and work to get cows bred, we have seen success on both ends. We will continue to fold 1116 into our breeding program. Thank you, Dennis and Erica Voss, for sharing the genetics of 1116 with us. He is your life time of work and experience, and we don’t take being able to benefit from the use of him lightly.

We used Cook’s 165 bull for two years. 1116 is a cornerstone of our program and the Roesmary cow was a perfect made cow. I think she was 16 the last time I saw her at Cook’s and she still had the feet, udder, and structure of a young cow. She’s one I’d like to have back. This bull is a working machine. In two years, we recorded 54 calves out of him.

This bull was our pick out of Greg Golden’s 2022 bull sale. Unfortunately this bull broke his leg during his second breeding season. His mother is an absolutely beautifully made cow with a perfect udder and feet.

I once again heard the American Angus Association’s smart ass radio ad against our “imposter” Angus bulls. For an outfit that lives in a glass house, they throw a lot of rocks. Since we don’t register our bulls, they consider us imposters. Our EPDs are figured here and are based on each bull’s sire and dam, they’re not inflated like the Angus Association’s. In fact, we believe our EPDs to be more accurate than theirs. The average reported weaning weights from 2007 to 2022 increased 11 pounds, while their average weaning weight EPD increased from 39 to 69. Their average

yearling weight EPD went from 69 to 116 for the same period, but the average reported yearling weights in 2007 were 1136 pounds and in 2022 they were still 1136 pounds. We’ve also never knowingly registered and/or sold a known carrier of a genetic defect. I’ll get out my Websters, maybe that’s the definition of “imposter.”

That brings up the next point. The EPDs on all our 2yr old bulls are the same, because they’ve been right at or near these same numbers for years and we haven’t changed anything.

25 HEAD

BRED 3-YEAR-OLD COWS

MCNAMEE ANGUS RANCH

We are offering 25 head of bred three and four year old cows. Most of these cows were purchased from us by Kyle and Kent Pennington as heifer calves and bred and sold in last year’s sale. We couldn’t resist so bought them back and calved them out. They all calved successfully and raised a healthy calf. They will calve in two cycles starting April 1. These cows are cake broke and used to being handled horseback. They’ve been poured for lice, vaccinated with Vira shield 4 +VL5, and are getting Roughage Buster mineral.

LOT 113

34 HEAD F1 BLACK BALDY BRED HEIFERS FROM COOK ANGUS

These are home raised heifers sired by Helbling Herefords and Bar Star Herefords. Heifers start calving April 2 for 42 days, bred to Cook Angus and McCumbers Angus bulls. Heifers have been grazing hayfields and getting some DDGs until the middle of December, then fed chopped hay. Heifers are located 14 miles south of Miles City on the Tongue River. These are do-it yourself heifers that take care of themselves that are out of a set of self-sufficient cows. Heifers were given Preguard 10 in spring 2024, and given Vira Sheild 6 VL5+HB and poured with Ivomic in fall 2024. Heifers were ultrasound on Sept 5 by Dr. Don Beck and retested by Dr. Cal Davision 2 weeks before sale.

25 HEAD

F1 BADLY BRED HEIFERS FROM PENNINGTON’S

Kyle and Kent purchased another package of F1 Baldy heifer calves from McNamee Angus Ranch last winter, developed them, and bred them to McNamee Angus and Cook Angus bulls. These heifers will start calving March 25th and will calve for 60 days. They were all vaccinated with Vira Shield 6 and poured with Ivermectin and Safe Guard.

MCNAMEE HORSES

STUD STANDING AT MCNAMEE ANGUS RANCH

“Raisin” (Reysed In Style) is our coming fiveyear-old stud. We are so excited about this horse. He continued to breed well this year, covering 11 mares. Raisin is kind, smart, friendly, super cowy and athletic and also a complete gentleman to his mares. We just weaned the first colts out of him this fall, and we could not be happier with them. They are kind, smart, athletic, structurally correct and have great size and bone. If interested in breeding to him, he will be standing at McNamee Angus Ranch until approximately June 8th when he goes out with his band of mares.

In loving memory of our brother-in-law

Lee Cady

An Irish Blessing

May the road rise to meet you, May the wind be always at your back, May the sun shine warm upon your face, The rains fall soft upon your fields, And until we meet again, May God hold you in the hallow of His hand.
