We would like to welcome you to our 37th Annual Bull Sale! A lot has changed in 37 years, but we are still committed to producing high quality genetics for our customers. Itís all about the cows! We feel we have an exceptional registered cow herd and have culled them very hard for maternal traits, soundness, performance, longevity and reproductive traits. We mate our cows to low birth weight, high performance bulls that have been raised in the same environment. This yearís offering consists of 39 Balancer and Gelbvieh yearling bulls. Due to extreme drought and grasshoppers, the bulls weaned off 40 pounds lighter than usual. However they have performed extremely well on feed. They averaged 708 pounds November 3rd and weighed 1020 pounds January 29th for an impressive 3.63 average daily gain. We are feeding Hubbard Blue Print pelleted feed at 1.5% of body weight and free choice hay. Bulls have had three rounds of shots and will have passed a breeding soundness evaluation. I say it every year, but we feel this is one of the best set of bulls we have ever brought to town. They have very good length, are very deep made and are very thick. Enough said! Hope to see you March 10th. We offer free keep until April 10th, free delivery up to 200 miles and offer a $100 discount if you take your bulls home sale day. Thank you!

Crossbreeding is proven science, and taking advantage of the heterosis resulting from a crossbreeding system is a “free lunch.” Crossbreeding is a tool the forefathers of ranching knew they needed to make a better beef animal. And the beef industry isn’t alone when it comes to crossbreeding. The dairy industry uses crossbreeding to either improve longevity or increase butter fat content in milk. The swine industry has used crossbreeding for decades to make an animal that meets industry and consumer demands while adding efficiencies to production.
Crossbreeding isn’t limited to livestock. Hybrid seeds have had a tremendous impact on agricultural productivity. Today, nearly all corn and 50% of all rice are hybrids. Hybrid seeds are an improvement over open pollinated seeds in terms of qualities such as yield, time to maturity and resistance to pests and diseases.
Producing crossbred calves allows producers to make a product that is in demand, costs less to produce and puts more dollars in their pocket. Crossbreeding has another benefit when crossbred females are kept as replacements and are allowed to contribute to the herd. It’s proven that crossbred cows give you more: 8% more cow longevity, 25% more lifetime productivity, 8% increased calf crop weaned, 5% increased weaning performance and 4% more in calf yearling performance.
Here’s what others within the beef industry say about crossbreeding:
• “Recently, I am hearing concern from some very large, progressive producers as their cows become more straight bred in a tough environment. Longevity, rebreeding and calf survivability all become important issues. I don’t think their challenges are because these producers have bought lessor quality bulls or managed their ranches incorrectly. It is because they have forgotten or ignored heterosis.”
- David Daley, Ph.D., associate dean in the California State University-Chico College of Agriculture
• “It’s time to rediscover crossbreeding.” - Roy Burris, Ph.D., an Extension beef specialist for the University of Kentucky
• “Every commercial cattlemen should seek to maximize heterosis in his herd. Crossing of Hereford x Polled Hereford or Angus x Red Angus will result in less heterosis than crosses such as Hereford x Continental breed or Angus x Continental breed. Within breeds, if the cattle selected are somewhat inbred heterosis will be greatest.” - Pete Anderson, Ph.D., University of Minnesota beef team (Editor’s Note: Judd Ranch has a focused line breeding program resulting in increased heterosis for its customers.)
• “Because no single breed excels in all areas that affect profitability, ...breed combinations (by crossbreeding) can be engineered to accommodate environmental constraints and meet marketing objectives.” - Matt Spangler, PhD., beef geneticist, University of Nebraska-Lincoln
• “Heterosis should be a driving factor in bull breed selection, as well-designed crossbreeding systems deliver proven benefits. There are not many free lunches in the cattle business, and a quality crossbred cow herd in a good crossbreeding program using high-quality herd sires is as close to a free lunch as it gets. Because a wellplanned crossbreeding system will not overcome poor bull selection, the use of quality sires is a critical aspect of crossbreeding.” - Jane Parrish, Ph.D., beef extension specialist, Mississippi State University
• “The closest thing to a free lunch is taking advantage of an organized crossbreeding system. Breed complementarity and heterosis benefit every production sector by adding genetic diversity, optimal immune response and other health and performance advantages.” - Frank Padilla, American Gelbvieh Association
• “The collective advantages of heterosis over time can be quite staggering. A commercial producer running 200 cows and weaning 500-pound calves could increase his weaning weight per cow exposed by 25 percent through maximizing heterosis in his cowherd and calves. Over a 20-eyear period, this would be like getting 1,000 free calves.”
