Thank you for attending the 24th Annual Select Performance & Showcase Sale of the Ranchers Quarter Horse Breeders Association. We are excited about this year’s sale featuring an exceptional offering of horses! We look forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones on sale day.
Come to the sale grounds at 7:30 a.m. for the Don Brunner Yearling Futurity followed by the Ranch Horse Futurity. See sale horses in action starting at 9 a.m. for the Performance Preview and compare foals side by side during the Weanling Showcase. Visit with the breeders about their programs. Remember all foals will be halter broke, gentle, and eligible for the 2025 RQHBA Futurities. Breakfast and lunch will be available on the grounds.
About RQHBA
The Ranchers Quarter Horse Breeders Association was first organized in the spring of 2000 when a group of South Dakota quarter horse breeders met to formulate a plan to market their foals, and has since evolved into a highly recognized Performance and Prospect Sale & Futurity, featuring the top offerings from member ranches. Ranches must apply for membership and participate as a Guest Consignor for at least one year; before being selected for membership by the RQHBA to assure that their program meets our high standards.
Each ranch may not sell more than 50% of the current year’s foal production. The purpose of this rule is to maintain a high quality sale without having a total production sale for any one member. Besides the current 11 member ranches in western South Dakota, northeastern Wyoming, and southeastern Montana that are RQHBA members, there are also high quality invitational saddle horses being offered in the sale.
Sale Requirements
All horses sold at the RQHBA Sale are inspected for quality. The sale horses are vet checked by a veterinarian when they are Coggins tested. They are then inspected by a screening committee and sale veternarian sale day. All foals sold in the sale will have AQHA 5 Panel test for both sire and dam (HYPP, GBED, HERDA, PSSM1, MH). Those results of the 5 Panel test for both sire and dam will be posted at the sale.
Riding horses must have been owned for at least one year and will be previewed before the sale.
Quality of Horses
As a group we strive to breed horses that are sound and structurally correct. We are confident the quality of our horses will meet your highest expectations. This is a sale where you can find a truly versatile horse suited for the arena, the show ring, trail riding or ranch work. All 2024 foals are eligible for the 2025 Don Brunner Yearling Futurity and the RQHBA 2 & 3 year old Ranch Horse Futurities as they come of age. Ranch visits are always welcome. All horses will have a clean bill of health and coggins to travel anywhere in the country.
You will find the member, guest consignor and invitational rider names and phone numbers here in the catalog. We encourage you to contact each individual about the horses that interest you.
All horses are available for inspection at the respective ranches anytime prior to sale day. Know that all horses in the sale are selected from a larger group and each ranch has more at home like the ones that are represented for sale. Your visit is always welcome!

1. The highest bidder is to be the buyer. If any dispute arises between two or more bidders, sole authority to settle the dispute is reserved by the auctioneer and his decision will be final. The auctioneer reserves the right to reject any or all bids.
2. Every effort has been made to ensure correctness in the catalog and in most cases information quoted is taken from official records. However, RQHBA, sales management, auctioneer, announcer assume and will accept no responsibility for errors or omissions. Announced changes in catalog information on sale day take precedence over printed material.
3. RQHBA, sales management, Besler’s Cadillac Ranch and consignors shall not be responsible for any accident that may occur to spectators, buyers, horses or loss or injury in any way to the sale, during or after the sale.
4. Payment in full must be made to the sales clerk immediately after the sale. Terms of the sale are cash, personal check or credit card (US Funds). We accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Discover. All credit card purchases will incur an additional 4% fee per transaction.
5. All known blemishes or defects will be called before bidding begins.
6. All horses become the responsibility and the property of the buyer when they leave the sale ring. Buyer must make arrangements for the care of horses at their own risk until delivery is taken.

11. Releases: No horses are to be removed until settled for. In order for horses to be removed from the grounds you must show a sales receipt. Make sure all information on receipt is correct. Also, be sure to give the receipt to the person ultimately responsible for removing your horse from the sale grounds.

Why AQHA 5 Panel Genetic Testing?
As an association that believes in our motto, “The Sale Where You Can Buy With Confidence,” RQHBA has instituted that all sires and dams of weanlings sold through this sale must have an AQHA 5 Panel Genetic Disease Test. Below is a description of what those tests mean. Test results will be available on sale day. We hope this will help you make an informed decision that allows you to buy with confidence. AQHA has just this year added a ‘6th’ disease to their panel this year. Some horses will have that additional test, but most will not. It is a work in progress adding this 6th test to all of our sires and mares.
GENETIC DISEASE RESULTS AND DESCRIPTIONS
Genes come in pairs; each parent contributes one copy to the offspring. With respect to the autosomal dominant genetic diseases listed below (HYPP, PSSM, and MH), only one defective gene is necessary to express the genetic disease in question. Such gene can be inherited from either of the parents or from both of the parents. With respect to autosomal recessive genetic disease listed below (GBED and HERDA), typically, two copies of an abnormal gene (two copies = a pair) must be present in order for the horse to show signs of the genetic defect in question. Horses with only one copy of the defective gene are considered “carriers”.
GBED - Glycogen Branching Enzyme Deficiency. Fatal disease of newborn foals caused by defect in glycogen storage. Affects heart and skeletal muscles and brain. Inherited as a recessive gene. Possible results:
N/N Normal - does not possess the disease-causing GBED gene.
N/G Carrier - Heterozygous (one normal and one GBED gene).
G/G Affected - horse has two copies of the GBED gene.
HERDA - Hereditary Equine Regional Dermal Asthenia. Skin disease characterized by hyperextensible skin, scarring, and severe lesions along the back of affected horses. Typical onset is around 2 years of age. Inherited as a recessive disease.
Possible results:
N/N Normal - horse does not have the HERDA gene.
N/HRD Carrier - horse carries one copy of the HERDA gene.
HRD/HRD Affected - horse has two copies of the HERDA gene.
HYPP - Hyperkalemic Periodic Paralysis. Muscle disease caused by defect in sodium channel gene that causes involuntary muscle contraction and increased level of potassium in blood. Inherited as a dominant disease. Two copies of the defective gene produce more severe signs than one copy.
Possible results:
N/N Normal - does not possess the disease-causing HYPP gene.
N/H Hyperkalemic - Heterozygous (one normal and one HYPP gene).
H/H Affected - horse has two copies of the HYPP gene.
MH - Malignant Hyperthermia. Rare but life-threatening skeletal muscle disease triggered by exposure to volatile anesthetics (halothane), depolarizing muscle relaxants (succinylcholine), and stress. Presumed inheritance as a dominant disease.
Possible results:
N/N Normal - horse does not have the MH gene.
N/MH Affected - horse has one copy of the MH gene.
MH/MH Affected - horse has two copies of the MH gene.
PSSM1 - Polysaccharide Storage Myopathy Type 1. Muscle disease characterized by accumulation of abnormal complex sugars in skeletal muscles. Signs include muscle pain, stiffness, skin twitching, sweating, weakness and reluctance to move. Inherited as a dominant disease.
Possible results:
N/N Normal - horse does not have the PSSM1 gene.
N/PSSM1 Affected - horse has one copy of the PSSM1 gene.
PSSM1/PSSM1 Affected - horse has two copies of the PSSM1 gene.
MYHM - Myosin-Heavy Chain Myopathy. A genetic muscle disease that can result in two distinct clinical disease presentations that both involve muscle loss or damage and are linked to the same genetic variant. A horse with MYHM is prone to presenting with one or both during their lifetime, while some horses with the mutation may never experience symptoms.
Possible results:
N/N Normal - horse does not have the MYHM gene.
N/MYHM Affected - horse has one copy of the MYHM gene
MYHM/MYHM Affected - horse has two copies of the MYHM gene.

Welcome to the 2024 RQHBA sale! This will be our 3rd year in this sale and are very proud to be a part of such a great group of people.
We ranch 26 miles southwest of Alzada, MT where we raise black Angus cattle and quarter horses. We use our horses for all aspects of ranch work and strive to raise cowy, good minded horses that are easy to train and easy on the eyes.
Our stallion, AJ Oak Rocker is a very versatile horse with tons of cow, conformation and an outstanding disposition which he passes onto his foals. AJ Oak Rocker has earned an ROM in Working Cow Horse, trail, and reining, and has points in halter and Western Pleasure. He’s been used in heading, heeling, tie down calf roping, barrels, and poles. He also is a money earner in NRCHA for Jr. Working Cowhorse and SDQHA for Jr. Reining and CON for Jr Reining, Jr Trail, heading, and heeling.

We are located north of Union Center, SD, in the heart of ranching country. Hale Quarter Horses started our breeding program, with the purchase of DT Shiner, at the start of 2023. DT Shiner is by one of the most prolific sires, Shiners Lena Chex (Shining Spark x Lil Miss Smarty Chex) and out of the great mare, King Snazzy Sugar (Fols Classy Snazzy x Slynking Sugar Whiz). He stands to the public, with cooled or frozen semen available. We currently have a handful of broodmares in our program. Our mares’ pedigrees speak for themselves including; a Can’t Kick This Cat daughter, Dash for Cash, Real Gun x Playgun, Two Eyed Red Buck, Kingsville Legend. They all are bred to “Shiner” for 2024 foals and we are offering you a piece of those at the RQHBA sale.

Curtis has been riding ‘Jose’ for the last year and 1/2 . There is not much this gelding hasn’t seen, and not much that bothers him! He has drug calves to the fire this spring, and is starting to track cattle well on the head or heel side doctoring in the pasture. He has seen ALOT of outside miles, and knows where to put his feet and how to handle himself. He is a SUPER kind gelding - we use him as the ‘peacekeeper’ in the trailer and in the corral. He gets along with the young horses out in the pasture and has even intervened when they were getting picked on--he is the ‘big brother’ you want to have around! Jose is going to be good sized when he finishes growing, and has a nice, ground covering gait that will cover country! He is always happy to see you and go to work. We are located in Belvidere, SD, and we have been raising horses together since 2010. We currently have a cow/calf operation, which, we use our horses almost daily. This is a family operation, so we need horses that will work for us as well as the kids. Our main goal in raising horses is to have them versatile, cowy, the mind, and the ability to withstand the demands of everyday chores to excel not only in the ranch world but also the performance world. We like a horse to have good conformation, withers, eye appeal, and bone to carry them through their lives on the ranch or the arena. They need to be durable to withstand the river hills, have cow and quick feet to make our job easier. We have raised and purchased our brood mare band and selected them based on their confirmation and cow.

Our second stallion SS Bravestone is a handy guy himself and his colts possess his colorful character and athleticism. Bravestone is a 2020 Black Stallion by Ruf Lil Magnum (NRHA LTE: $123,000+) and out of Xtra Black Magic. Frank has used Bravestone to calve on all spring. He makes everything easy because of his cow, grit, and his natural rate and stop.

The Wetz family purchased the home ranch in 1907. LeRoy and Shirley (Packer) own the Wetz Stirrup Ranch since 1997. It is located 16 miles east of Vale, South Dakota along the Belle Fourche River. They raise horses for the ranch and arena work over 40 years. They like to say they raise one horse trailer horses with Good Bone, Brains, and disposition.
The Stirrup Ranch QH was awarded the 2015 South Dakota Producers of the Year.
Family is important, they have always tried to keep themselves, kids and grandkids mounted with confirmation, good feet, legs to do a full day’s work. The grandkids are the 6th generation to live and work on the ranch.

Welcome to the 2024 RQHBA Sale! This is our 5 th year with this great group of quarter horse breeders.
We hope you enjoy your visit to the Black Hills, Belle Fourche and Besler’s Cadillac Ranch. It’s a beautiful area and I feel very fortunate to have grown up right down the road along the Redwater River where my parents, Ralph & Becky Crago still live today. Growing up here, there were many hours spent horseback- riding the hills and the creek bottoms calving, lambing, foaling, hunting and fishing. Great memories and many good horses were made in this area. We live 20 miles north of Belle Fourche now with our 2 children, Casen-15 and Kyler-12. We raise Quarter horses, cattle and sheep. The kids keep us on the go with football, basketball, dance, 4-H and rodeos all while balancing the ranching duties. Both of our kids compete on home raised horses in the 4-H Horse shows. Our son Casen is a freshman and qualified for the state High School rodeo in Reined Cowhorse and Cutting this year. We unfortunately couldn’t make it to do much showing in the AQHA Ranching Heritage Challenges this past year, but we are hopeful that we will get to this fall.

Elvis is a 4 year old dun gelding that we bred and raised. We did offer him in the sale last year and decided to bring him home and expose him to more on the ranch. We used him last fall preg-testing and shipping and this spring calving, sorting pairs, trailing cattle and he’s been to a few brandings. He is really quiet in the branding pen and pulls good from the horn. He is gentle and kind to be around. Easy to catch. Elvis is good to haul, clip, bathe and trim/shoe. He picks up his leads, side-passes, opens gates and has a good stop. Dancer is a 3 year old mare that I bought as a weanling at the Nile Gold Buckle Horse Sale. As a yearling she got hit in the eye by a piece of wire and got an eye ulcer that has made her eye have a little spot in it. She is doing really well in the arena and out on little rides. Dancer knows her leads, has nice stops, backs well, side passes, beginning to turn around well, and she has been learning how to work gates and walk and trot over logs. Dancer is a little bit sensitive due to her eye. She has never been mean and she wants no trouble. Dancer would be an excellent prospect for goat tying, breakaway roping, and Ranch Horse Versatility competitions. Dancer is eligible for the Nile Futurity in Billings, Montana. Spud is a very nice pony. Looks like a little big horse. The kids have used him on the ranch for calving, gathering, sorting, branding. He’s seen the barrel and pole pattern. Very gentle but will keep up with the big horses.

• Purse divided per stallion, gelding and mare divisions. Futurity is for yearlings only.
• To be eligible, the yearling must have sold as a foal through the previous years RQHBA Showcase Sale; eligibility will follow the horse.
• The yearling must show at the RQHBA Showcase Sale in the Don Brunner Yearling Futurity.
• Entry Fees are $50. Paid by Aug 1.
• Winnings will be awarded to the registered owner at the time of the futurity.
• Original papers are to be presented for show registration to verify ownership.
• Showing expenses are the owner’s responsibility (Entry fees, stall, etc.).
• Payout will be 60% for 1st place, 30% for 2nd place and 10% for 3rd place.
• RQHBA members and weanling consignors are not eligible to compete for the futurity funds.
Jackpot in-hand trail class for yearlings! Enter day of futurity for $25. All entry fees jackpotted back. Obstacles may include: side pass, back through, gate, trot, pivot, picking up feet.
RQHBA RANCH HORSE FUTURITY
Any horse purchased from a member through the RQHBA sale that turned 2 or 3 years old in 2024 can compete for cash! Mares, geldings and stallions can compete against others in their age division for $500 for 1st place, $250 for 2nd place, and $100 for 3rd place, per class. Entry fees are $75. paid by Aug 1. Following is what the 2 and 3 year olds will be judged on:
1. Gate (Horseback). 2. Bridge (Walk Over).
3. Logs (Trot Thru). 4. Log (Drag Figure 8).
5. Pattern will be posted morning of the futurity.
6. Dismount on the right side and pickup the right rear leg.
7. Exit Arena
• First Place in each class wins $500, second place wins $250, and third place wins $100.
• In the event of a tie, the horse with the highest reining score will win.
• Participants will have three attempts at each obstacle before passing. Participants have the option of skipping any obstacle the rider feels would not do their pattern justice.
