ABOUT SERVICE

How often do you find yourself in a situation where you wish the word “service� was put to use? It seems nowadays we often find service quite lacking. According to the dictionary, “service,� a noun, means: work done by one person or group that benefits another. What we now call “convenience stores� were once simply called “gas stations� or better yet, “service stations.� One could drive the old jalopy up to the gas pump and almost immediately a friendly service station attendant would be at the door asking what we needed today. Whether we wanted filled up or just a couple dollars’ worth of gas, he would pump the gas, check the oil, wash the windows, check the air in your tires, collect the money, bring your change, and even take time to visit a bit, sharing the latest news or weather report. Another stop might have been at the grocery store where the owner was usually the first to greet you. There were a lot of small neighborhood grocery

stores, one being in the neighborhood I grew up in, called “Westside Market.� The Reeves, Ansyl and Myrtle Reeves (we called them PeeVee and Mrs. Reeves), were the proprietors. I loved that little store and would often go there with my mother, or with her list. There was a counter where Mrs. Reeves would take the list and retrieve items from shelves lining the wall behind the counter, sack them up and charge them to my parents. To the right of the counter was a glass candy counter full of penny candy and nickel candy bars, and to the left was the meat counter, where PeeVee weighed the fresh meat or cheese, wrapped it in white butcher paper tied the bundle with string. Like most customers, my mother charged her groceries and at the end of each month my father would pay the bill. The larger grocery stores, such as Saub’s, Red Owl, Ideal Market and Jack & Jill, had grocery carts where you would cruise the isles and retrieve your own selections, but all had fresh meat depart-

ments with a butcher, in white jacket and cap, ready to weigh and wrap your selections. I especially liked the Jack & Jill store, as Charlie Kelly, the meat man, always had a good joke. The check-out ladies rang each item up separately, sacked them, and a carry-out boy was always ready to take the items to your vehicle. Then too, Country folks would often telephone the store with their list and the items would be sacked up, charged, and ready to be picked up by a neighbor or high school student. This was service. The same scenario was played out in most every business in every agricultural community. Sadly, due to the advent of the computer age, credit cards, online shopping and the decline of mom and pop stores in every community, we no longer enjoy service as we once did. Perhaps the meaning of “service� needs either updated or eliminated in our dictionaries.
