SALE RESULTS NOVEMBER 17TH 2018 We sold right at 600 cows, bulls, heiferettes and 200 bred cows, fall pairs, and bred heifers on this sale. The crowd was limited however 7 feeding and kill buyers made a top dollar market even though true killer cow and bull market is under enormous pressure. Several different cow classes are priced widely ranging all the way from $35-75. Old thin lean cows $35-45 Middle lower end feeding cows 45-55 Better feeding cows 5566 Fleshy fed cows/heiferettes 66-86. Large amount of heiferettes and young feeding cows $70-100. Choose When is a community funded project based in Northwest Colorado that provides longacting, reversible contraception (LARC) to women in Northwest Colorado who can’t afford it. 50% OF THE PREGNANCIES IN NORTHWEST COLORADO ARE UNINTENDED. Northwest Colorado’s combination of high health insurance rates and an economy where many jobs come without insurance benefits means that many women are uninsured and can’t afford the most effective form of birth control. The irony is that there is a proven solution to this problem. The Colorado Family Planning Initiative, a program that ran from 2009 to 2014, demonstrated that making long-acting birth control (lUDs and hormonal implants) available to women at low or no cost resulted in a significant reduction in unintended pregnancy. (See fact box.) Choose When was developed in 2017 by a group of Steamboat Springs women. Kathleen Wasserman, one of the founders, said local longacting birth control needs were not being met and that providing funding for LARCs was the obvious solution. Choose When, working with its clinic partners Northwest Colorado Health and Planned Parenthood, has helped well over 100 women since it started operations in April 2017. “We are a community-based, community-funded organization, born and bred in Steamboat Springs,” she

said, adding that the community’s response has been overwhelmingly positive. The impact of LARCs on communities extends beyond the improved rates of unintended and teen pregnancies. Wasserman said the research also shows that it can contribute to a drop in women on welfare and food stamps, and reductions in everything from child poverty to child abuse to kids in the court system. BENEFITS OF LONG-ACTING BIRTH CONTROL Out of 10,000 women on the birth control pill, about 900 will become pregnant. Of 10,000 women on IUDs or hormonal implants, about 30 women will become pregnant, Wasserman said. “It’s just a no-brainer. Over the long haul, LARC is actually less expensive than birth control pills with a failure rate that is twenty times lower,” she said. “The problem is that the initial cost of a LARC, which can run as high as $1500, is more than most uninsured women can afford.” Depending on what a woman’s needs are, these long-acting methods of birth control can last anywhere from 3 to 12 years. the freedom down the road to adjust their plans. “The main difference between LARCs and other methods of birth control is that LARCs eliminate human error,” Wasserman said. Once these long-acting birth control methods are implanted, they’re secure and women don’t have to think about whether or not they took their pill today. This helps account for why these methods have a failure rate 20 times lower than other forms of birth control. How to donate to Choose When through the Colorado Gives website: 1. Go to Coloradogives.org 2. In the yellow “find a nonprofit” box, type in “Choose When” and click “Go.” 3. Find the box with the “Health Partnership” and “Choose When” logos and click “Donate.” 4. Fill in the donation amount, then scroll down to “Donation details.” 5. In the box under “Where do you want your donation directed?” click the dropdown menu arrows and select “Program.” 6. In the new box that will open, labeled “Program to direct funds,” select “Choose When” from the drop down menu.
