MAGIC CARPET MANIA AT FITZALEN’S CASTLE

H

ordes of people descended upon the peaceful castle grounds of Chariton’s favorite giant, Rye Fitzalen, for the muchheralded Magic Carpet Rides and other Summer activities such as Summer Bathing, Dancing, and Garden Mazing Madness. A total of 20 lovely and intricately woven carpets stood hovering at attention in the enormous back cobbled stone courtyard where excited guests of all ages waited to

...

Many ask Why? Why won’t the Carpets just reveal their Secrets?

be seated. From antiquated and intricate to minimalist and sophisticated, the carpets are known not only for their expert flying skills and keen sense of adventure but also for their mid-flight storytelling via song. ‘The songs were my favorite part! If I want to fly I could use my own wings but I could never hear those kinds of stories. They know stories about the skies and how land was formed and what used to be here,’ said carpet rider Perline Ott. Recently, Magic Carpets region round have been added to the list of Endangered Species as all the ones currently in existence have all been handed down and no new ones have been created. In spite of many attempts and access to a wealth of modern technology, Inventors are simply unable to duplicate the mind-boggling intricacy of the Weaves. Undoubtedly, there are only a few of the true ancient breed of Magic Carpets now in existence. Couple that with a history cloaked in mystery, and it is easier to understand why the many attempts to create new Magic Carpets have led to disastrous results. The case of Henry Akore was for many alchemists a wake up call. After hundreds of attempts, he was finally able to get one of his carpet creations to fly and then he was never heard from again.

Many ask, ‘Why? Why won’t the carpets just reveal their secrets?’ But most experts doubt that the carpets know or even would know how to communicate the secrets of their creation. That valuable information is buried in Time. This is why Fitzalen’s Garden Party continues to draw so many adventure seekers and curious creatures. They all attend to take a peek and perhaps a ride on one of his famous carpets. Long lines swept about the castle gardens, with eager folk waiting their turn and wringing their hands with worry that they wouldn’t get their favorite carpet. And of course, there

was no shortage of anxious faces that worried, ‘What if? What if the carpets got too tired?’ But Fitzalen himself was the proud caretaker of the Magic Carpets. After each journey that lasted a healthy half hour of forest flight and water wandering, he carefully brushed the back of each beautiful carpet with a silken brush that he dipped in a strange oil, and the carpets quivered in gratitude. Yes, it was clear that Fitzalen treated each of his carpets with respect, and they in turn did the same. No more than 3 passengers were allowed to ride at a time. One of the first rides was taken by a group of young teenagers who excitedly took their

seats atop an ancient and sturdy looking carpet with mystical scrolls that stitched out a maddening picture in purple and gold. They laid securely on their stomachs and held on to the front and were quickly swept up and away into the day— Carpet after Carpet followed them and then shot off to the right and to the left. Two children were instructed to hold on tightly and not a single safety belt was used, as Magic Carpets have an untarnished reputation for never dropping a single child! The children’s carpet was a lush, velvety affair with embroidered yellow and green faces, and the children squealed as the carpet whizzed them up and away towards the forest. Two sweethearts climbed aboard a daisy decorated rug and in an instant they, too, were gone. About 40 minutes passed before the group of teenagers returned with large smiles and immediately began to tell their tale: ‘We went over Sangamon Forest and to a volcano! Inside we saw a fossil of a dragon! It was the coolest place we’ve ever been and we’re going back there right now! Perfect place for a clubhouse and no one knows where it is but us.’ All the while, Fitzalen listened as he prepared the carpet for other passengers, and somehow one could see him living vicariously through the stories as if it was him up there flying around. It is common knowledge that giants are far too large to ride a magic carpet and this is bittersweet as Fitzalen’s carpet collection is one of the best around. The carpets being the proud creatures they are, they won’t flock together to give their master a bit of joy, but Fitzalen insists, ‘It’s the smiles & the stories that come back that really make him happy.’ *Don’t miss Fitzalen’s Spotlight pg. 7

MORE WEIRDNESS for THAINE AYDELOTTE A

fter the shocking revelations last summer about the plagiarism and grave robbing incident of bestselling author, Thaine Aydelotte, one would think the public would resist the lures of classics by the author such as, ‘Neverty’ ‘Lake of Jewels’ and ‘Rhea’s End,’ but it seems sales are going through the roof. ‘We can’t keep them on the shelves,’ said Brucey Menders, owner of Silbry’s Books in Trementon, ‘especially since the Confession broke.’ Mr. Aydelotte’s recent confession has sent the story into a flurry of excitement. After having been ordered to pay royalties to the family of the original stolen diary that the much-loved story ‘Neverty’ was accused of copying, Thaine Aydelotte was quoted as saying, ‘It is True. I was at the tomb of the late Eliza Jaelle, but not under the horrible circumstances many believe. I was led there not by my own fancy but by the urgings of a Spectre. Had it not been for this apparition, I would never have found myself at that wretched tomb on that cold, blustery Autumn night. He [the Spectre] dragged me out of bed, led me to the death vault, and bid me to fling open the heavy coffin lid where the diary was

held securely by Mrs. Jaelle. He demanded that I grab it! He wouldn’t unhand me until I forced the clutching bones from the book! I did, I did take the diary— it’s true! But the Spectre begged me to do so— for the Spectre was none other than Dennison Chase from Neverty!’ These revelations not only shocked long time Neverty fans and the Jaelle family, but also enraged many upstanding Spectre communities that shortly thereafter jointly released this statement: ‘As intriguing and fantastic is this latest confession of Mr. Aydelotte, the Spectre community can no longer sit idly by and listen to these hurtful and untrue allegations that are founded far away from Reality and safely snuggled in Myth. No Spectre from this world or beyond would ever force anyone from their bed to steal another’s property, as the mere idea is so morally wrong and quite frankly, Impossible! We follow a strict code of ethics and the prized personal property with which one is buried carries a respect that no mere mortal would understand. Furthermore, if Mr. Aydelotte found himself being dragged through the mist and through the mud to a crumbling mausoleum at midnight, well then,

I’m not afraid to state the obvious: It was by the orders of his own Insanity— not Ours.’ Fans continue to clutch their much loved and well read book, ‘Neverty’ and declare that the Spectre had to have been Dennison Chase! Of course! He led Mr. Aydelotte from his bed because he had to have his story told— even from beyond the grave his love for Margot Baied could not rest! Experts are torn and still ponder how Mr. Aydelotte could possibly have known that the tomb held a future bestseller in the bony grasp of its occupant? How else really? Unless, of course, the ever mysterious Mr. Thaine Aydelotte is really Dennison Chase...

Maricopa’s by Night

M

Historical Arguments make Spectators Uneasy

any were stunned at the verbal assaults that passed between some of the most revered and respected statues during the much anticipated Maricopa by Night at teheLudwig Lystilla Museum last month.

‘ ‘

At least my King didn’t lose his land during a drunken card game!

,

It was terrible. I couldn’t believe my ears!’ said museum attendee Pearl Simms, ‘The one— I don’t remember who, the one holding a basket of grapes or something-

well, he swung around and told a lovely girl statue to quit singing and that her voice was horrendous! Then we entered a hallway and every last one of the statues was hissing and hollering! About some historical event.’ The Ludwig Lystilla Sculpture Museum staff has no idea how it happened. The shortterm enchantment of the statues was created both as a way to allow visitors to interact with some of the historical figures and as a way to further educate visitors. The same enchantment proved to be an enormous success last year. Museum director Priscilla Adams said, ‘Last year was such a rewarding Experience. One could see children gathered around a statue, hearing tales and old superstitions. All of them were so polite —so well behaved! We have no idea how this occurred but we will get to the bottom of it.’ The scene that night unfolded like this: the Breathtaking corridors of the museum were candle lit and upon entering visitors could grab a refreshment and some cake. Then

attendees could make their way through the halls with their sweeping, engraved ceilings and hope to catch the blinking of a statue or hear a whispered word. The fragrance from the garden blew in from the open doors and visitors enjoyed the museum by night until they heard, ‘That never happened! You fool!’ They heard the whispered venom and felt the wind shift with the verbal assault, ‘My king never bowed to yours! Your King was a notorious groveling weakling who couldn’t gather an army if his life depended on it! — and his life did! That’s why he lost it and now, your country is but a tiny speck in the corner of a forgotten region!’ Stunning. And intriguing. Visitors quickly gathered around to hear the reply, which came out in a hissing slur, ‘At least my king didn’t lose his land during a drunken card game! At least he died for it!’ Then other statues chimed in about how one statue looked ‘So ridiculous!—without a nose! Pity that man had to hack it off with a

MAIN

hammer. Who was it that hacked it off? Oh yes! It was the very sculptor who created you! I heard he was so disgusted by his creation he ruined your face as an improvement.’ In fact, there was no shortage of snarky fault-finding and general nit-picking and visitors were often left red-faced and feeling awkward. ‘I guess you could imagine they’d get sick of each other, but to stoop so low as to insult a statue missing an arm or a nose— how rude!’ museum attendee Jenny Perkins added. Many in the Enchantment community put the blame on the Enchanter. ‘Obviously somebody didn’t know what they were doing, said Enchantment Emporioum owner, Brea LaMee, ‘Or they did it on purpose! Take your pick!’ To make up for the incident, the museum is offering free Admission during the month of August and hopes to make other Enchantment plans for next Spring’s Maricopa By Night.

A

s usual, when Summer rolls around it brings a hot fireball of a sun that most creatures enjoy. Many creatures even depend on the hot Summer sun for survival. But there are also those like our Walking Dead, who fear the power of the sun to speed up their Decomposition. With the stunning new arrival last year of Kellerman Institute and its many refrigerated floors crowded with expert doctors, it’s no wonder the waiting list quickly grew until it became every Zombie’s dream to attain a place in Kellerman’s. But for many unfortunate Zombies, the Kellerman Institute was an unreachable dream.

If only I could get my hands on a Port-A-Life pak!

,

‘To get a bed in Kellerman’s is probably not gonna happen for me, ‘ said local zombie Brock Russell, ‘For one, there’s a waiting list, and for another it’s expensive. If only I could get my hands on a Port-A-Life pak!’ Chief of Staff Dr. Max DeBerry recently unveiled the new, state of the Art, ‘Port-ALife pak,’ a miraculous invention with the ability to extend the Re-Animation of ZomtheFiligree.com

bies for months past their due date. Naturally, this has created a stir in communities of the Walking Dead. Immediately after the introduction of Port-A-Life paks, the market was flooded with smart copies. In addition, alternative ‘healing’ clinics have been sprouting up in the last year at an alarming rate. According to spa owner Trudy Moran, this is anything but alarming. ‘It’s Wonderful! Kellerman’s can’t treat them all and now they have a chance at a level of health many only dreamed of before!’ Spas offer an array of superb treatments like Ice Cold Sugar Wraps that drive bacteria into a feeding frenzy and distract them from flesh feasting, while allowing the Zombie organs time to re-cover and re-animate. Refreshing Cleanses rid the corpses of maggots and vultures, and Fragrant Flower Washes clean fragile hair and nails while the Zombie escapes, re-laxes, and re-hydrates. Peppermint, Tea Tree, and Eucalyptus infused with Oxygen help with tough internal cleansing and respiratory problems. All during this spa process, Zombies may enjoy the pleasant year round temperature of 58 degrees offered the cave regions of the spas. Cold cubbyholes are available for daily and weekly rentals and many social activities are included for a reasonable price. In fact, the Moultrian Region is quickly becoming the hot spot for Sun Burnt Zombies to escape the Heat.

June 24 The days are grey and blend with the sea. You can’t see where one ends and the other begins and it can make a man mad. Already 3 of the ship rats have flung themselves at the long thing with dark, oily flesh that continues to slither after our boat. They vanished in bubbles and it disappeared until its hunger returned. But if it wasn’t for it, we wouldn’t know we were on water but rather flying through the gloom. We never spoke of the crew that jumped. Cap’tn Lofton Paki kept the crew strong and we worked under his watchful, knowing eye. Until the end, I knew I wouldn’t give myself to the thing and neither would Paki. June 27 Today, the mist melted away and showed us birds and sky. We knew land was near and we craved it. The warm earth always call me. Looking at the others, the gleam in their eyes and their paws grabbing at the ropes and hoisting the sails, catching a southern wind I knew they were excited, too. Back to work. Land is coming— the clouds can point where they want. I haven’t time for a fancy like that. My imagination can’t afford it. June 27 A lovely town! Nestled in a mountain and the natives are a welcoming folk that invited us into cool foyers to escape the heat and gave our thirst tart lemonades and sliced fruit. Later, they led us deep into cave rooms where we swam in fresh pools and napped in hammocks. A summer paradise. Paki and I do not know our position— we know we have turned more than once and I think it is the fault of the thick cloud we floated in. It brought me to this unknown Kingdom of Summer and we have decided that here we will stay for a while. I have spotted some most peculiar plants in the forest beyond. With large faces that seem to stare and beckon.

June 31 Time is a strange thing, isn’t it? I don’t know how much use I have for it here. There are several delectable bakeries that make fine cakes out of twisted and baked fruit and sugar, stuffed into pillowy homes of pastry. Cakes the like of which I have never eaten. I have tried to go into the forest but for some reason, they will not let me. I see enormous plant specimens craning their heavy leafy heads, deep within their petals— a twinkle of an eye... July? Cakes in the morning and cakes at night. I feel blubbery and flowery— my skin seems to have a perfume like a plant. Everything here, such a sweet paradise of smells and cake. Swimming and sleeping. But exploring seems to be off limits. Their eyes seem strange. I know there’s a secret. July? A terrible thing! I don’t know how to make sense of it! My brain is somersaulting! I snuck early this morning when the sun was still pink over the horizon into the forest or garden or whatever it is, dozen, no! Hundreds of the plants, monstrous in size and each with a head buried deep in its leaves. Not flower heads, creature heads! I peeled back the petals and looked—creatures I didn’t know, mumbling, murmuring! And then! 2 of my crew! Onetoe and Curse blinked back in astonishment and choked out a few words, they said, ‘We’re in a garden and we’ll be picked for something to eat!... ‘the cakes! They get you with the cakes!’ I couldn’t clip their stems or they would die so I hurried back to the village and got Longfellow & Paki and together we dug them up and were relieved to find their roots were still perfectly intact rat feet. We have to leave immediately but cannot raise suspicion. It’s Time to leave but I fear we may never....

Purtlebaugh Lake Lights Up I

t was going to be difficult, yes, very difficult for Dragons to top last year’s dazzling performances of Fireworking out at Purtlebaugh Lake in Gautlan. Snatches of the legendary Fireworking stories could still be heard up all through last Spring. Finally, on Saturday, creatures far and wide gathered at the shores before sunset to once again witness the thrill of seeing some of the best Fireworkers the region had to offer. Stories were compared about how Benoni Naks sailed over the crowd and created a Fire rainstorm of Fireflies that fizzed into a green vapor over the lake and astonished them all last year. Or remember Aart Frazee with his Firebirds that danced in smoke and color across Purtlebaugh and cawed in high pitched squeals that brought the crowd to their feet? Creatures still had not forgotten Lane Chaney and Bruce Chalfont, with their mystical volcanoes of glitter that erupted into the starless night. Fireworker enthusiasts dotted the crowd and mingled, sometimes answering curious questions such as, ‘What’s really in those little ingredient bottles to make the Fires so colorful?’ and ‘Does blue Fire feel different than yellow or green?’ But before too many questions could be answered, the sun slowly sank behind the lake and the five Massey Bros., who last year were remembered for weaving Fire Pictures that hypnotized the

crowd, came whizzing out. Instantly, dozens of fiery golden keys began shooting this way and that until the sky rained down keys that faded ornately into the water’s surface. Then the crowd saw it, a door on the platform that stood at the middle of the lake. One final key flitted down, still aflame, and fell into the door before fizzing out. Suddenly, the door burst open, revealing Aart Frazee, who flew into the sky with an eruption of multicolored Fire that sizzled into silvery doves . The doves suddenly flew out over the crowd, oohhing down at the watching creatures. Instantly Frazee was greeted by whistles and clapping. Immediately, Benoni Naks came seemingly out of nowhere and landed silently on the little platform, where she removed her secret glass vials of Fire feeders. A pinch of this and a swig of that and she was off, racing high above the massive crowd staring in anticipation. Her Fire came out in steady spurts. One yellow, one purple, one green, and one red until she commanded them and they all rose up in mirror images of Benoni! Immediately there were five Dragons made of colored Fire and they raced around, shocking the audience by spewing rivers of Fire way above them. And then the members of the audience were on their feet! What a daring spectacle! An incredible display of technique and control! Birdy Shay might have felt

nerves after having followed one of the most wonderful Fireworker displays but she didn’t show it. With graceful swoops and flaps she riled the crowd up with clapping hands and whizzed all the more fast. While she moved she Spat small seeds of Fire until they circled the lake, waiting for her command. As she flew up in the center she raised her hands to the night and the seeds began to writhe and grow into fiery poppies that were flame red. It was an incredible demonstration, proving that Shay could easily hold her own. The crowd showed their appreciation. Other last year newcomers included Chelsea Rankert, Lass Heredia, and Siney Turley, who put on delightful if not awesome shows of skilled Fireworks that brought great amusement to the crowd. Sure enough, this is another year of Fireworking displays that we’ll all being talking about for months to come.

Shadow Skippers Train in Adony S

hadow Skippers kept Adony on its toes Saturday as they clung to sides of buildings and raced after shifting shadows that rose up and disappeared due to the wildly unpredictable July weather. Region round enthusiasts were excited to get a glimpse of some of their favorites who are busy preparing for the end of Summer finals in Dauphin Wood. Electa Durril was perched high up in the nook of a shadow until suddenly the sun rose up and sliced her shadow away, causing hearts to speed up and Electa to jump, quick as lightning, following the dark line to the next secure clump. Rodney Foshee, who was on several streets parallel, hung from a window ledge before performing several mid air somersaults much to the delight of the spectators who speckled the street below. He landed light in a long shadow strip and confidently skipped up the road, occasionally jumping off a building to the right or left. But in an instant the same sharp slice of sunlight found him and he flew up, heads above the

Cloud Watchers Enjoy Carnival of Color S

unday afternoon brought a procession of wonderfully fluffy clouds marching across the sky in Brewington’s Field, as all in attendance found their coziest patch of grass and watched as the Misty Parade soon Commenced... A feathered Ostrich reared his head between the large clouds, seemingly pecking at the sun with his long beak. You could almost make out his long wispy eyelashes that hung over his dark eyes. No sooner had he reached the top of the field then followed an enormous Ferris Wheel, spinning in the sunshine, slowly at first and then gaining in speed, its little carriages full of misty folk who were soon spun away. Moments passed before another cloud began forming. Buzzes would pass through the crowd: What could it be? Was it a cave? Or a bear head? No, it was a Beehive! With tiny fluffs of bees swarming it. They even buzzed around foggy flowers with puffy petals. The hive rose up above the field, growing ever large in size until finally deflating into long vaporous strands of ribbony cloud.

Then there was sunshine, bright and clear, and lemonades were sipped and treats nibbled. It was a lazy sort of day with nothing to do but breathe the air. A keyhole began forming, first to the east and slowly growing in size. Sunshine peeked through the hole and everyone awaited the hazy key that never appeared. That was soon forgotten because almost immediately and right before everyones’ eyes a vaporous puppet theater began! Misty Marionettes were hung from the clouds by wispy strings and pulled by some unknown puppet master for the delight of everyone present. The Marionettes jerked and danced across the sky and then stopped, frozen in time until a wind ushered their dance onward. They mimed their quick story, which told of a journey through weather fierce and intense, tempered by Sunshine and Snow that never ended with night. Then they were gone, evaporated by wind to be summoned up again in some other place. A beast snuck up and crawled to show a fang dripping with cloud and cautioned of rain. In fact, the sky became grey and warned of an upcoming storm as thunder began grumbling in the distance. A swarm of swallows swooped low through the fog and also whistled of weather. The whip crack of thunder closed the Cloud Parade for that day, but it promised to continue next Sunday at Brewington’s Field, weather permitting.

Enchantment Encampment Disappointment T

he Fairy Society has recently come to the decision of cancelling all further preparations for the upcoming Enchantment Encampment. The following statement was released in explanation: ‘To respect the Nature involved in this complicated operation, the Fairy Society has decided to suspend all Enchantment Encampment Privileges. We regret this decision, and wish to assure the public that this decision was not reached lightly. However, we felt that after last years disruptive events, it is only fair to the Nature, as well as the other prisoners, to suspend activities until further notice. Thank you.’

...

Disrupting the Forest like that was Unforgiveable This may come as a shock to many participants who in some case have been on a waiting list for years. But after last

years Encampment, this decision can hardly come as a surprise. Last years Encampment was kicked off on August 21. During the opening hours, countless creatures reenacted the Historic Spiriting Away of travelers that occurred hundreds of years ago when several hundred travelers disappeared into a fairy Ring only to return, confused and bewildered 7 years later. The Encampment has always prided itself on being Historically Accurate and offering travelers a rare glimpse behind that famous adventure. However, in 2009 travellers got more than they bargained for. Shortly after the 100 strong group disappeared into the fairy ring, 3 troll teenagers happened upon the site. The teenagers, Zenes Beam, Boyd Goga and Danny LaDue, were up to no good. They destroyed the ring, wreaking havoc on the portal for the travellers. ‘We just wanted to eat the Mushrooms. We were hungry and bored.’ LaDue told report-

ers later, ‘We meant no harm.’ Harm was done. It took many months, countless resources, borrowed extra power from the Forest to bring the travelers through safely. ‘It’s one thing for prisoners to have such an experience —’ the Fairy Society was quoted as saying last year, ‘but these were respectful visitors, witnesses— they technically have no place here, but we allowed it. Disrupting the Forest like that was Unforgiveable.’ The Trolls were given 6 months of community service as penance. But wherever the three teenagers go, creatures far and wide know what they did, and many believe it was done on purpose. ‘Oh sure,’ said Penny Cunningham, ‘a troll who doesn’t know a fairy ring? Give me a break. They were hungry? Please. I was trapped for months, afraid for my life, afraid I’d never see my family again, because some trolls were hungry? It’s almost better to think that they did it on purpose.’

The opening included a tour of its underground vaults, which boast some of the finest specimens in kite design and construction in the region. Most sought after of all was Lady Nay Alderade’s Thunder Cloud Kite. This kite was given its special spot all to itself, flooded in soft lights. Its faded purple and grey silks and twinkling diamond-like jewels held captive all who witnessed it. Arielle Flynn’s ‘Billowing Bunch of Daffodils’ was also in attendance, as was Etta Perev’s ‘Little Butterfly’ from this past Spring. Dark and Foreboding was Piatt Ross’s ‘Vulture.’ Proprietor Theodore Imkey demonstrated the designing process and the technicalities in involved in kite-making and visitors were allowed to participate in making paper kites.

Valley o’ the Tombs Returns!

fter the tremendous turnout for last years Valley o’ the Tombs Restoration Festivities, along with the still echoing town talk of how much fun the event had been, organizers of the original Festivities have decided to once again put on another party in hopes of making it an annual tradition. This year’s festival will occupy only one day: the first Saturday in July, when the blood-red poppies are guaranteed to be in full bloom to make a lovely contrast next to the many grey and cold tombstones and mausoleums. Last year celebrated the completion of the painstaking restoration of the valley after the Angry Betty Tornado ripped through the region more than 6 years ago this Summer. Not only did the tornado smash hundreds of fragile tombstones and historical resting monuments, but it also slung many of the delicate corpses around the valley. This made it enormously challenging for volunteers to try to find the proper homes

for the bones. Immediately, an emergency team was on-sight to help bewildered and shocked families and ghosts sort through the emotional information they were processing, while state-of-the-art technicians began the tedious work of bone matching. The purpose of the planned Festivities is as much to honor the Valley as to honor those who gave their time and hard work to restore it. You’ll hear plenty about what happened through animated paranormal storytelling by campfires. The famous band Illuminated Hand has already been confirmed to be headlining again this year. And as there will be plenty of ghosts in attendance, being waltzed up to the moon is certainly a possibility!

Now’s a good a time as any for such exploration, especially given the recent rise in popularity of many unconventional musical experiences such as the Wailing Woman’s Chorus and the Insectia Symphony. The Anura Toad Choir has something unique to offer and fans are listening— ‘They’re not like other Toad Choirs; they have a modern sound, almost suspenseful and scary. They keep listeners on their toes. I’m going to miss their sound with the rocks from Anderville.’ said longtime fan Bert Lutevi. But conductor Leon Rhoda recently assured fans that the Anderville and Anura collaboration would not end. ‘We have plenty of future projects lined up and our touring will continue. It will just no longer be exclusive. There’s still a lot of things we’d like to explore on our own.’

Spotlight: Rye Fitzalen and a Love for Carpets R

ye Fitzalen brushes the luxurious Carpet that hovers before him. The sun catches the light of the Oil on the silken threads, an Oil that Fitzalen says with a wink is ‘their flying potion. ’ Of course, these Carpets have flown for hundreds of years, if not thousands, and the secret lies not within some petty Oil but rather in the riddles of their stitches. ‘Although,’ Fitzalen says, ‘the oil does help. Floria Fitzalen is the one who originally developed the essential Oil blend that they respond to. I guess there’s something in the Oil blend that reminds them of her. No one knew Carpets like Floria.’

it takes more than an oil blend to spot a carpet and to make them fly

Floria Fitzalen was a notorious sailor. At a moment’s whim, she’d leave her home, and alone on her boat she’d sail to exotic and forgotten lands. Despite countless warnings from her family, Ms. Fitzalen persisted in sailing out all by herself. She visited strange deserted islands and traded treasures with the natives. She had a fascination with curiosities, and many People thought that this fascination was because she herself was somewhat of a curiosity: she was a Primordial Dwarf Giant, not weighing more than a large horse and never really feeling at home anywhere. One night, there came a storm and she was caught alone on the perilous sea. Legend has it that her boat began to sink, and Ms. Fitzalen was lying on the floor of her cabin holding on for her dear life. All of a sudden, the water started to pour into the cabin and the Carpet she was clutching began to float and then took off into the sky, eventually locating land and thus saving her. Ever after, Ms. Fitzalen was devoted to Magic Carpets:

saving, restoring, and taking care of them. She had a real skill for spotting them, as many Magic Carpets are known for laying dormant for hundreds of years until something like a violent event or flooding water rouses them from their slumbers. Some think Ms. Fitzalen developed the Oil blend out of her favorite perfumes that were knocked off the shelves that fatal night and mixed with the seawaters. Alchemists have asked, ‘What’s in the blend?’ and many pricey offers have come, but Rye Fitzalen knows it takes more than an oil blend to spot a Carpet and to make it fly. ‘In some ways, they choose you and the Fitzalens are lucky.’ Others wonder if Luck had anything to do with the long relationshiop between the Fitzalen family and Magic Carpets. ‘I know the Fitzalen’s were Ancient Alchemists who specialized in Textiles,’ said local genealogist Wayne Addison. ‘long before Floria. Not everyone, after all, happens to be laying on a Magic Carpet right when they need one. There’s a mutual attraction between the carpets and the family. ’ At the present time, Mr. Fitzalen has other plans for sharing his castle and his heritage. ‘I’d like to open the castle for a weekend in December. The garden mazes are beautiful in their own way with torches lit in the snow. I want to invite people inside to see the castle and to share in some of the treasures I inherited. I have more than Magic Carpets keeping me company.’ Legends swirl about the secret rooms and illusions contained in Mr. Fitzalen’s castle. Haunting is the least of the excitement it is rumored to have. ‘All of my ancestors traveled and collected Curiosities. From Cellar to Attic, the castle is stuffed tight with Oddities. Some say I should open it during Hallowe’en. I’m still thinking about it. I could make a haunted house that would terrify visitors for years to come. Giant peculiar objects do tend to scare.’

Butterfield Sister’s Solstice Soiree T

he Butterfield Sisters, Pansy & Poppy hosted another of their much loved and anticipated fancy dress balls in Sangamon forest to celebrate the Summer Solstice and the excitement was as poignant as the heat lightning beyond the trees that made for exciting additional decorations. Not to say, of course that Pansy & Poppy hadn’t gone to their usual lengths and made a Fairyland out of the forest. Colored paper lanterns were strewn and

twinkled along with the fireflies that caught the sparkle of many a wondrous costume. No shortage of plumed birds, queen of hearts and circus characters and one could see all the hard work and thoughtful preparation put into each ensemble. Beautiful dancing and twinkling headdresses weaved a tapestry of a glorious evening—one that will be remembered until Winter, where it will shine with color & warmth among the icicles and chill.

. . . ! from the Horsetorian p l e

Dear Horsetorian, I’m a mermaid who many years ago, fell for a land dweller. Although the spark is long gone, I take my vows very seriously. Yet-—I’ve developed a terrible scale problem due to the dehydration of living away from the water. It’s run out of control and I’m torn between losing my fins or my husband? Tired of Drying Dear Tired of Drying, Maybe it’s time for him to get wet? He may also be tired of your itching and complaining. Compromise comes from both sides and if he’s not willing then leave without him! HH

Dear Mr. Horsetorian, Last Summer, we set up nest as we always do and prepared for our new hatchlings. When they finally emerged we immediately noticed one of them was larger than the others. Of course, we knew it was the Cukoo up to her old tricks and after careful searches around the neighborhood turned up nothing we decided to raise the poor chick as our own. Well, wouldn’t you know it, now that Kevin is officially 1 year old and old enough to bring food home and contribute into modern society the mother wants her baby back, although we raised Kevin and were there for him during the most difficult moments of his life. We’re willing to go all the way in our fight to keep Kevin but just wanted to consult you first since you have so much Wisdom. Thank you! Birds of a Feather Dear Birds of a Feather Well, you knew the M.O. of the Cuckoo when you got into this mess. It is a real mess and will most certainly end with you all being Cuckoos! If you want Kevin to visit you later, you better treat him like a bird and set him Free. HH

Hi Horsetorian, My hairs been thinning and it’s this horrible silken shiny, blondish color and my warts are pale and hairless. I’m boggled as to why this is happening to me. I’m a modern witch and my entire life as been spent under the heavy weight of coarse, thick hair with no shortage of wart blessings with wirey hairs. I’m losing clients and quite frankly, my mind. Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow Dear Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow, It is very possible that some of your witch competitors have cast a beauty theFiligree.com

Howdy Horsetorian, I’m a Troll— just moved to a new, small town and boy, am i getting looks! What does a Troll gotta o around here to earn some respect? Done Trolling

Dear Pretty Putrid Problem, This is a delicate situation, indeed! The only thing to be done is confronting your boss with the truth. He may find it awkward but she will, believe it or not, be very flattered which in turn will please him! If you tell him that it is interfereing with your work then he’ll have no other choice then to respect you.

Dear Done Trolling, Community Service! more specifically: Help Senior Citizens for free! They’ll quickly spread the word about your new found character and journey on the straight and narrow and because of their muted smells, won’t mind you not smelling like roses. HH
