Legends & Lanterns at hollowman’s T by a number of bid failures to

Hardesty’s Hopes Frozen

hings are looking grim for Orlean Hardesty. Plagued

secure Hollowman Lake as his own property, he has instead had to be satisfied with owning all the land around it as the city of Pindly recently ruled, ‘Water is not a Possession to be owned.’ As if that wasn’t bad enough— it was also ruled that the land he purchased had to have a public road installed so that residents could still access the very public, Hollowman Lake if they so chose to Swim, Ice Skate or Picnic there. It soon became clear to all that Mr. Hardesty only agreed to the Land purchase as a means to eventually acquiring the Lake but now after a series of rejections those hopes are beginning to fade and the townsfolks interest in the lake has perked up.

Every so often a Prince or Princess was claimed as their Own

,

‘People are coming out to Hollowman Lake in droves in hopes of seeing the city underneath the surface,’ said ice skater,

Nellie Cornea. As of yet, nothing has been seen and no shiny treasures have washed up on her glassy shore but legend swirls thick especially right around twilight when all the lanterns surrounding the lake are lit and the final candle is flickering in its lantern hung on the little island tree at the center—

‘Everyone has a grandparent or a long, lost cousin who knows somebody that drowned in Hollowman Lake. They say when you swim out there to the little island tree some under current will get you and you’re a goner– they’ll never find you again.’ Though many of those tales have a touch

of wild fantasy they are, surprisingly, rooted in fact. Over a hundred years ago, Pindlyans were burdened by several drownings at Hollowman Lake, precisely at the island Tree Spot. A horse and carriage had completely disappeared after having been spotted in the lakes vicinity. Even 2 rescuers that tried to save a girl were also sucked under the seemingly still waters. After extensive investigation, involving complicated safety procedures and tests it was ruled that the lake was connected deep under the surface to a system of subterranean channels that ran out to the bay causing an intense undercurrent at the center of the lake. They came to this far fetched conclusion after many distinctive objects were dropped into the lake one was surprisingly washed up along the coast of the Hacha Bay helping them connect the dots. Naturally as time evolved and more victims were claimed the story moved away from the strong, underground cave currents to an entire secret cave town under the water that was full of treasures and townsfolk that every so often a Prince or Princess was claimed for their own— Whatever the reason, Hollowman Lake looks to remain a popular Pindlyan destination Summer or Winter, regardless of its misty past.

mummies achieve equal rights A

ncient Aristocrats that lurched and moaned their way through the mist last Spring marching for Equal Rights can now sit back and know that their marching was not in vain. The new Proctor Act has now passed into law insuring all Mummies will be treated with the same respect they give— ‘This law is great news for Ancient Aristocrats,’ said Nicodemus Hayden, Professor of Ancient Aristocratic Studies at Carivell University who was quoted last Spring on the Mummy Marches, ‘this is absolutely the first time it is against the law to discriminate against Ancient Aristocrats on grounds of Dress, Habits, Smell & General Culture A definite giant leap forward for all of us—’

‘ ,

A giant leap forward for all of us

Most ecstatic perhaps of all is Danny Proctor whose law suit against Liberty Shoes last Spring acted like a catalyst for involving all Mummies. Although, the law suit was settled out of court, Sinfai’s City Council was quick to draw up the bill which would profoundly prohibit discrimination against Mummies.

But not everyone’s convinced. ‘This bill passed so hurriedly and is so full of holes that it will hardly make a difference said Mummy Mayor of Deuth, Istok Koburi, ‘perhaps amendments can be made but for now I’m pessimistic.’ Pessimism was not present in Mummy communities, however. The only thing on display was good cheer and many parties that had their doors open to All. Liberty shoes also released a statement extending its warm Congratulations to the Ancient Aristocrats. Danny Proctor settles out of court

concordia Sinking Investigators Scramble for Evidence before Big Freeze

I

nvestigators have approximately one month to come up with more conclusive evidence in the Concordia Sinking or the trial will be dropped—’ warned Judge Lacusta causing a flurry of excitement at Bayonne police headquarters where investigators bemoaned the ruling. ‘A month? To comb the entire bay? Sure, we can do it!’ said Sgt. Huey.

‘ ,

This isn’t reasonable Doubt. This is Doubt !

Perhaps they can, but with Father Winter blowing especially angry these last few weeks many worry about the Big Freeze that usually shows up this time of year. ‘If the water freezes, that’s it! Our ticket is up.’ Huey continued, ‘All evidence will be lost. I’m sure the defense will have their ‘experts’ on the

case from beneath the water, collecting their own ‘evidence’ to slap on us. Merfolk stick together and this case will certainly be no exception.’ In fact, many worry about making stick the lack of evidence in the charges against the 5 teenage mermaids that were arrested last Spring. ‘Evidence?’ A spokeswoman for the defense said, ‘What evidence? You’ve got someone that swam out of the wood-works saying she thought she saw someone ‘acting weird’ before the crime or maybe not after all, then evidence that perhaps the rudder was tampered with but that’s not even conclusive and then you’ve got the terribly wild delusion that all teenage mermaids have a grudge against land folk. This isn’t reasonable doubt. This is doubt!’ It seems Judge Lacusta tends to agree with the defense. She ruled that all evidence needed to be reviewed and ruled upon before the months end and before anymore time was wasted on both sides. ‘The last thing we want to do is waste either the courts or the juries time,’ she concluded.

Confessions of a Fairy Bandit I

t was difficult in the beginning. It was difficult getting used to people being nice to me— to having friends that acted like they cared. Because that’s what they did: they cared. We would eat together, laugh together and fight together. We even made a deal that we’d die together. I meant it. They meant it. That’s how it was. Some of you may judge me and call me stupid or foolish but maybe you don’t know how it is not to have a family and then suddenly to get one. From going to bed hungry and battling with loneliness to being stuffed with delicious home cooked meals and put to bed in clean sheets. See, I never had clean sheets or clean anything— Creepy -Crawlies were normal to me and I liked when they weren’t normal. When I could call a bed all mine. Did I steal for it? Sure. Did I feel bad about that? Yea, I did. Some people said I had a choice but I felt like it was just Destiny. Like that first day when I met Sam in the park. 2 – Winter ‘09

I was exhausted and skin and bones and asleep curled up on a high tree limb in Brewberry’s Park when suddenly I jerked awake sensing someone near. Then I saw Sam looking at me, kinda laughing. We were instantly friends and she took me under her wing, literally, back to the house where there were maybe 15 or so girls. All living nice. There were candles around and a table full of leftovers that my mouth watered upon seeing. I ate like I’d never eaten before that night and all the girls were nice and promised I could stay. I took my first hot bath then with glassy bubbles that looked like magic to me. The memories come back now. Of flying, dipping low over the woods and then swooping out over the cliffs of Bobola. No one could stop

us. We could do whatever we wanted. We were invincible and we were a family. I belonged and no one was going to take them from me. When they asked me to steal some caramel— it was nothing. I didn’t think twice. Then there were clothes and more clothes. Shoes and furniture. Then we all started talking about the Barbu Jewel Heist.

MAIN

We planned and we planned and well, what’s the use? We’re isolated now, each in her own cell. We won’t fly together or flock, dipping low between the trees. We aren’t invincible. We walk heavily back to our cells and I’m back to how it was before: Dirty, Hungry, Lonely and surrounded by Creepy-Crawlies. Being a bandit is bad, sure, we all know this but I just paid a high price for wanting a family and I don’t need your pity. In these cold times, take your pity and give it to another homeless fairy abandoned and littering the trees ‘like trash’ as so many say. Lend a seat by your fire you might be surprised by the stories they can tell,... —All Fairy Bandit Correspondence to be addressed via the Filigree HQ, 607 S. Main St. Springfield, TN 37172

Rare Cloud Inspires Lamplighter to set Sail A

ttica will have to say goodbye to one of its most beloved Lamplighters, Bertus Pinch, who plans on setting sail immediately following the Holidays for a year long journey across the oceans in search of the Southern Hemispheres and the many wonders it has to offer. In particular, a rare bit of cloud that many witnessed rise up in a firey sunset during the Lamplighter strike that left the city in total darkness, last October.

,

Strange Phenomena is nothing new ‘round here

Much to the regret of many of his friends and acquaintances in Attica who look for his bobbing light stick every night to talk over the days events or enjoy warm spicy beverages during the Winter Evenings. ‘It will be terrible! Maybe not for him, but for us!’ said local Attican, Joe Colry, ‘I knew Bertus for 30 years and now he’s off chasing some strange phenomenon in the sky, some rare bit of wisp that looks like fingers. I’m sure he’ll have fun, but we’ll miss him.’ ‘Rare bit of wispy clouds are not a new phenomenon especially along the coast. One time, Attica stopped dead in her tracks as a giant ship slowly rocked itself across the foamy seas of cloud and continued for more than hour much to the excited spectators be-

low that enjoyed the scene with roasted

‘I’d never seen anything like it. No one had. The sunset was all ablaze and then the strange phenomenon rose up like misty dark fingers that pointed southward to the sun. Us lamplighters were striking but I knew it was a sign that I had to go southward. Right when I should have been lighting the lamps I saw the hand, hundreds probably did too, but I knew it when I saw it. I heard a voice telling me to set sail and it would tell me where to stop. I would see the rare bit of cloud in the form of wispy, foreboding fingers and I will stop. That is my mission, so I’m off. After the Holidays. Looking forward to saying goodbye to everyone first.’

almonds and warm cider. Then there was the silly horse that had his hind legs kicking out behind him that stopped people and locals can recount many others. ‘Oh yes. Strange phenomena is nothing new round here. I’ve seen jolly clowns bending down with their big sunset tinted noses and rainbow colored fluffy hair. Made ya laugh! Then there was the scary witch that went screeching across the sky on her broom. She must have taken over a good hour to finish that journey and around town there wasn’t a face looking down.’ But for Bertus Pinch it took the hands pointing southward to urge him to fill up his log book with his ponderings and musings which he has promised to mail to the Filigree Quarterly for immediate publication. Bertus Pinch of Attica will be heading South

Ghost Gangs vs. Vampires

t anytime and at anywhere dark forms can suddenly swallow up the light of street lamps and hissings can echo off walls and you just may be the Unlucky one to witness one of the many recent gang wars between Vampires & the Ghosts of their victims. ‘I was just minding my business when these supernatural squeals erupted all around me,’ said an anonymous witness, ‘It was obvious from the get go that I wasn’t what they were after. The vampires with their long, pointy boots walked slowly together with their arms at their sides and their heads bowed looking straight to the group of spirits who were jelly like and clear and sorta hard to make out in the night and then— it was On.’ Scenes likes these have exploded in the last weeks due in part to what many believe is the fault of the weather. ‘Definitely the weather,’ said after life expert Henry Biarum, ‘The chill offers a more

hospitable environment to the Ghost wishing to cross over and animate. And if they died in a violent manner, and having a vampire drain your blood would definitely qualify as violent, then they’ll most certainly want revenge— and they almost always get it.’ ‘Never heard those sounds before, ‘the witness continued, ‘As I hid behind a trash can I could clearly see the dark vampire forms blast up and off walls but I could also see they were confused. The Ghosts were hard to spot and fast and to top it all off, a bite or a smack wasn’t going to make any difference to them. They let the Vampires tire themselves out and then one by one they snatched them away screaming up into the night—’ Episodes like these are not only horrifying to the public but horrifying to Vampires, too. ‘What are they going to do? How will they fight?’ The expert followed up, ‘there’s only one thing to do: Stop Killing.’

Winter ‘09 – 3

Winter’s Dreamers A

fter a hot Summer abuzz with the business of Insect life exploded into the resplendent colors of Autumn and then finally faded into the barrenness of Winter, we turn to ask ourselves, where have all the Insects gone? But a moment ago, they were busy flitting and flying, sometimes feasting on our own flesh! Where do they go in Winter? Where is their home? For some the answer is simple, they are going home to the Promise Land. After having scattered all their eggs along streams, bogs and scummy ponds they simply find a quiet place to retire forever, having done their duty. While others must burrow deep into the ground, rotten dens and hidden nooks in order to get some much needed rest for Spring where they will lay more eggs or do what insects like to do: Work. ‘Sure it seems boring to a Mammal who would rather waste away the days curling up and giggling and ‘having fun’ but if the tiny stitches of work weren’t taken care of, the fabric of our entire eco system would collapse,’ said a red and black striped furry caterpillar named Larry Pooten ‘ever seen an ant ask someone how they’re doing? Of

course not! Whose got the time? And play wrestling? No, we’ll leave the lolly-gagging to you and we’d like to think you can lolly-gag because of us.’

,

Sure it seems boring to a Mammal...

Well, If you don’t say so! It must be gently pointed out however, that Mammals own some of the finest snuggeries around that specialize in making an insects hibernation as cozy and ‘fun’ as possible. In fact, a splurge of these hibernation hotels have sprouted up in recent years and the sheer mammality of them makes them only more sought after. ‘I wouldn’t dream of being in one of the cold, isolated camps my own kind offers for hibernation,’ said a satisfied customer of the ‘Winter Snooze Lodge’ in Toomey, ‘Dreary and dull. Some V Gossip A

utumn blew away scattering leaves as well as a a bit of Gossip around here at the Filigree HQ’s. Such a flurry of accusations came a breezin’ through our doors in the way of letters demanding to know how in the world! How could we dream of printing the editorial by Dr. Thaddeus Faulk entitled, ‘the Madness at Murdock Glen’ which was Dr. Faulk’s first person account of how he delivered his home town from Madness. What a story! So offended were they about how the editorial painted their own neighboring towns to be crazed and insane, as well! How honored we were, here at the Filigree, to have been given the opportunity to print it in the first place. Dr. Faulk’s acute powers of observations were due much thanks in the rescue of Murdock Glen and that any persons would be disturbed on the grounds of the editorial ‘giving the town a bad name’ are dismissed at once as being Silly & Ignorant.

ic’s Family would like to extend a warm thank you to all patrons who came out to the Meatatorium this last Fall to pay tribute with flowers, poems and candy boxes to the Zombie Vic who made it until after Hallowe’en, but just barely. Long enough, however to get to see his Meatatorium scare the Living Day Lights out of all who attended. After our feature article on Vic went to press in Fall, hundreds came to experience the frightful Meatatorium that did not disappoint. His family is currently making plans to continue this new tradition in name of their father. He will be greatly missed but well received in his next chapter in Life!

ee, some days are quiet around here at the Filigree HQ’s and others, there is a storm of excitement. Sources that demand to be checked and then rechecked. Tidbits of steaming stories that need to be carefully protected and in between it all hovers the Truth. Between fact and fiction lies plenty of misunderstanding. Take these next few examples:

what its like when its time to feel comfy at Winter. I’ll give them that.’ And the Mammals will take it. As word spreads more and more of the hotels are there to satisfy the demand with lavender scented dens to encourage sweet dreams, and cotton beds stuffed tight with herbs that help control the climate. That’s not the only thing that is controlled, either. No possibility of predators, as all facilities boast a 24 hour porter so creatures can sleep deeper than they ever have. ‘I don’t care what the price is! If my family can sleep without having to worry about anything, I’ll give you everything I got!’ said hibernator, Pat Ledrea. That, of course, will not be necessary as snuggeries come in all price ranges and with all star rankings so no need to break the bank to find the perfect solution for you. And to have a sweet deep sleep is priceless, in’it?

discrimination. Many moaned that the subtitle: You better watch your back, I’m a Werewolf’ was clearly an insinuation that werewolves are always out to get someone. On the contrary! We simply meant it as the opposite. ‘If you come after me. I’ll be able to get you because, well I’m a werewolf, etc..But well,..I s’pose we could have been choosier in our wording but it was an eyecatcher and still, to this day we have bushels of fan letters awaiting Mr. Vail who has definitely achieved rock star status.

A

nother misunderstanding: the Friar’s Dam Kidnapper, also from the Spring ‘09 edition. A side effect from a reading a newspaper appears to be that no one really reads it at all! We got so many ‘hot tips’ and sightings from readers regarding the kidnapping that we didn’t know what to do. A police officer was parked in our HQ for 3 weeks trying to deal with the floods of letters. Our mistake? We forgot to mention that we are merely newspaper reporters and not the police! But by all means, if you have any info regarding the brutal kidnapping then please contact the Gwinnet Police Dept. (Your tips of course are very helpful and an insider has already leaked some exciting developments in the case to come next Spring!) Story pg. 3 Summer ‘09

peaking of Vanishing: Reminiscent letters with gorgeous photos also sailed in after the Moni & Podja, Scarecrow Socialites story. We have greatly prized and saved these letters and we hope to gather them together for a tribute spread next Autumn and hopefully by then, Moni & Podja will have returned! Story pg. 5 Autumn ‘09

I

n our ‘Families Wait Full of Hope for Hallowe’en’ we received a great many letters and even visitors to the HQ who wondered about the Mahoney family and if their father was returned to them. Then there were those who were desperate to hear if the Arbuchle daughter was returned to her parents. Both were victims of Spiriting Away and their families awaited their return at Peckover’s Apple Orchard on Hallowe’en. I’m afraid to report that they did not, much to the disappointment of their families. We wish them the Best of Luck for next Hallowe’en! Story pg. 2 Autumn ‘09 Dear Reader, If there was something you particularly liked or did not like, tell us! We will most certainly try to respond. Happy Winter! Arlie Lippett Survives Ghost Town Weekend says meeting Toothless Timmy Prize enough A

rlie Lippett has braved Mosegin for an entire weekend and came out in one piece on 2 feet, to tell his story. After, the weekend Lock-in in one of the most severely haunted places in the caverns that saw dozens of others come running terrified out with flailing arms, Lippett calmly walked out with his serene expression and wondered at all the commotion. He mumbled something about ‘not minding a glass of water, thank you’ and then said quickly that Mosegin was a gorgeous little town and that he wouldn’t mind taking up there permanently. A pulse ran through the shocked crowd that gathered around him and gasps were heard. After Arlie was made comfortable and taken to a quiet tearoom and filled with all the sorts of treats one would imagine is craved after an atrocious trial, Mr. Lippett soon began to unfold his tale.

The Legend is real alright. Teeth started popping up.

,

‘At first there were lots of people and the caves were dark and purplish at that time. We all had a time of it, talking together. Must have been about 50 of us. Mosegin was beautiful. All of the little town is carved out in the side of the caves and mixing with the stalactites and mites. Never seen anything like that. Little windy roads and houses with pretty porches that looked over the lagoons. I never really did feel scared but I could see the others were feeling antsy, not everyone, ‘course. We made our way to the top of the town where Inns had been prepared for us. We whispered a bit about Timmy. About the Legend, how he was scared off from the town and fell down one of the cave tunnels and starved to death. You could see each time we walked by a dark hole everyone was wondering. Bats flapped way above and startled most of us. We weren’t expecting that. Mosegin is a quiet place. The Inns were nice and cozy. We all got settled and then made plans to cook for the evening, make a bonfire near the waters. Well, it didn’t take long for the first girl to find a tooth. The legend is real alright. Teeth started popping up. I even found one, but it didn’t scare me. It was a human tooth and well, I have a collection of those. We lost a few of the weekenders there. They left, disgusted and frightened. Others had to escort them. The rest of us met at the fires. Then we heard it. A moist laughing and then someone got slapped hard across the face. Couldn’t see anything just heard it. They left, too. I heard the laughing. Sounded like a crazy person and then I started feeling the breathing, warm in my ear. I just kept starin’ on. I know how ghosts are and poltergeists, too. Just desperate for attention. I figured let him have fun with the others. He’d be wasting his time with me and I think he knew that. The others were more fun. I just cooked my vegetables and

stared away. Some people were falling right into his trap and getting terrorized. Ripping their hair out with fear when a tooth would fall on them or their plate would fly out of their hands. Old tricks. Classic ones at that. But there were others like me that had seen it before. You could tell the ones with experience. We just got on with our tasks at hand and ignored them. By this point, we had gotten rid of the real scaredy pants that had no place being there at all. That was Ghost Town 101. Now our group had been cut in half. Now the games were gonna seriously begin and we knew that. Things were quiet for an hour or so and we headed back to our rooms to await the long night. It started as we were safely all in our beds. Long nails scratching at walls, at metal, at anything. Clicking and tapping. Sheets were ripped off. Big bangs and the sound of nails dropping. All those things are fine and we expected them but the more it continues the more you start to lose it. It rained teeth on me. Slowly at first like big rain drops and then it poured. I kept my head under my pillow and tried to sleep until my pillow was yanked out from under my nose. More laughing in my ear. I heard several screams from the other rooms. I sat up and started talking to Timmy. I told him that I would try to help him and my bed started to move. It got lifted up and then smashed again against the floor. Then he left. He was busy that night. I heard plenty of horrified screams echo through the caves. I figured one by one they’d all leave. You could hear footsteps beyond my window. I wondered how many were left. Next morning, Timmy startled me with his toothless grin looking at me over my shoulder in the mirror. At breakfast, there were only 10 left and it was only Sat. morning. He was good alright. We discussed the Legend in detail. What had they said? He was a freak prior to the ousting? Why was he a freak? Just because he had no teeth? Where were his teeth? That last question got me to thinking. I was going to go by the library and do a little research. Anyone who wanted to join me was welcome. Fortunately, everyone did.

I heard plenty of horrified screams echo through the caves.

,

It was like a time warp in the library. Everything was covered in a thick dust and it looked like no one had ventured in there in a hundred years. Probably hadn’t either. We poured over public records and scanned archives for details of Timmy. There wasn’t a soul called Toothless Timmy and I think we knew that. But how to find his name? Old newspapers. Crumbling but still visible. We started flipping their delicate pages. Believe it or not, it wasn’t long before a front page blared out at us, ‘Timothy Skeen turning Toothless to pay off Debts’. The story

unfolded a tale of a gambler that after all the money was gone, gambled with his own teeth and when he started gambling on his limbs, the town got rid of him. They ran him off and he was never seen again. That’s when the rumors began that he fell down a long

to my room and opened my satchel. In the side pocket was something I always carried with me: Cards. I started shuffling them. The smell of the cards can be overpowering if you love them. As I shuffled their scent floated out into the room. I knew it wouldn’t be long

Arlie Lippett greets reporters after Mosegin Win. dark cave hole and starved, dreaming about revenge when death came. We fell silent. But Timmy didn’t. Books started flying off the shelves and we high tailed it out of there. It was then, when one of the others got picked up high and taken out of over the waters and dropped. She swam for her life back to shore ----But she immediately packed up her things and left with another 2 that had tired of Timmy’s antics. We were down to 8 and a couple of hours passed and then the fires began. They erupted all around us and we could feel the heat. The popping, booming sound of the flames were slowly engulfing us. The others were screaming and desperate to get out of the circle but I knew something and was surprised that they didn’t know it, too. A ghost can’t really hurt you. A poltergeist as much as he would like cannot either. So I stayed and waited for the hallucination to pass but the others rushed through the illusion of fire and ran out of Mosegin. I was alone. That was fine by me because I had a plan. I went

before Timmy arrived and sure enough, the room got icy. We started with Gin Rummy. I dealt out the cards and started to play. He responded right away. I had him right where I wanted him but I also had a worthy opponent. He beat me at Rummy, that first game. And we played some more. We shuffled and bet and played that night away. We even played poker and made lots of bets and he kept a careful record of what I owed him and I knew what it was. As a matter of fact that’s why I came out of Mosegin, y’see I’ve always collected teeth and I have a pretty nice collection, if I do say so myself. Not as nice and as many as Timmy’s but I’m gonna keep on playin’ til I get all of his. I’m due back in Mosegin with these: A velvet sack chok full of thousands of teeth from an array of different creatures. ‘Wait til he sees ‘em! Lippett chuckled.

Sleigh Rides at Mt. Sinkhorn M

t. Sinkhorn will be ushering legions of fans and thrill seekers up its snowy sides to entice them to take a wild ride down its daringly steep slopes, ‘I have never had so much fun in all my life,’ gushed Charity Burnet who just hopped off the elegant sleigh that seats about 20 comfortably. ‘Comfortably?’ another quickly chimed in, ‘I just had the best time!’ The gorgeous sleds are packed tight with velvety pillows and come fully equipped with plenty of blankets. Naturally, there’s also well trained drivers that are able to steer the massive sleds away from dangerous jutting boulders that have been known to occasionally grab out at passer-bys. Although there have been the random accident, there haven’t been enough serious ones to scare off curious people that have heard about the famous Mt. Sinkhorn and her fabulous shiny red sleighs. ‘The best part about it? Besides the sled?’ one excited participant began ‘probably the cave tunnels’ and a large group assembled, nodded their heads in agreement. The cave tunnel that is so wildly popular, snakes itself from the top of the mountain gaining speed at the very peak and then whizzing through a series of ice chambers

that have shafts that pour light or snow through. Sledders delight in hearing their screams echo and all the unexpected twists and turns and sudden drops that can easily make your stomach jump. And there are plenty of drops. One drop lasts almost 10 seconds as the massive sled barrels straight down at nearly 180 degrees!

her Sleighs were better than any Carpenters twice her age

,

Mt. Sinkhorn has a long tradition of offering folks around Sangamon Forest a trip down her cliffs. Since, Orville Jay Sinkhorn bought the mountain along with all the land around it more than 200 yrs. ago, there has been stories of the fancy Sinkorn Sleighs. Local Legend has it that the daughter of Orville and Sarah Sinkhorn, Amonlia, loved sleighs so much that she grew up obsessed with both them and the mountain. She started building

her own by the time she was 12 and when she reached 16 her sleighs were better than any carpenters twice her age. She’d disappear up in the mountain tunnels for weeks at a time and the family never thought twice about it as she’s done it since she was young. When it was warm she had sleighs on rails or wheels and when it snowed is when she loved it best and that’s when the traditions began, with letting townsfolk try out her sleds. She knew that mountain better than anyone and that’s why it was so strange when Amonlia disappeared walking out in the tunnels one day, never to be seen again. Some claimed it was those mountain shafts and tunnels that swirled and got entangled and led to the ocean while others said it was just Amonlia being a feral child. Wild she was born and wild she’d stay. They eventually gave up looking for her but legends still whisper that she’s somewhere in those tunnels and that makes it all the more frightening for passengers when they snake through the dark and chilly parts. Now, visitors can see Amonlia’s magnificent sleighs as well as her drawings and tour the old Sinkhorn Mansion that will only be open to the public during Winter.

Winter Wonderland Contest in Tewksberry D

ecorators from all walks of life have been designing their hearts out in Fadila Park in Tewksberry over the weekend in hopes of walking away with the prize of Winter Wonderland Designer of the Year. The title in itself carries much weight for designers and apparently if you walk away with that very distinguished prize you can secure any job you want. As of yet, no winners have been announced but amazing pieces have been on display much to the joy of passer-bys. A gorgeous and ornate winter gingerbread Castle complete with tiny delicate wreaths seemingly woven in golden threads was the first to grab the publics attention by young newcomer, Polly Durko. Even more amazing were her gingerbread reindeer that had candy floss that acted like a mist that encircled each of their pinkened noses. Too impossible is it to recount how detailed the icing scrollworks that swooped about her castle giving it a royal and impressive air and certainly ‘Your Majesty’s Winter’ was a viable prize winner. Next was an ice world made out of sugar crystals and rock candy that had been delicately misted by blue paint drizzles. In this Ice kingdom, strange and fantastic beasts lurked and roamed the icy chambers and even set out little sweet meals as they huddled with their families around glowing purple fires. Icla Jur was the designer of, ‘Ice Dream’. Not everything was an incredible, believable real-life rendition as the 6 – Winter ‘09

next sculpture clearly demonstrated. Fashioned from pine and evergreens, ‘Forest Fancy’ had an intricate series of keys interwoven into the fury pines where they mingled with red ribbons creating the greens, reds and golds so popular this time of year without going overboard with sentimentality. Dusan Throm was a former Winter Wonderland prize winner and ‘Forest Fancy’ might also have its eyes on the prize. Fires, Ice, Sweets and Cakes were a common sighting among the hundred or so submissions to Winter Wonderland but perhaps nothing was so popular as Cakes. Aisles upon aisles of delicious cake decorations were there to tempt even the least sugar toothed of us all. Ribbons of frosting, layers of roses and ice palace upon bluish ice palace were all there to make their case. 2 cake makers screamed the loudest, though. Agnes Butalo and Condit Prather weaved enormous cake worlds out of pure sugar. Walking by these outrageous works of edible art someone asked Mr. Prather whether they were actually able to be eaten? He reached behind a hidden shelf and retrieved a tray full of the delicious moist cake samples that competed in taste to how beautiful the cake was visually. It seems but a small collection of adjectives on paper but these magical masterpieces needed to be witnessed first hand. Dancing Ice princesses were dipped low into frosting swirls

and sugared white roses. Their beaus ice skated across mirrored icy pools and a surprise awaited the watcher with a detailed eye beneath the surface of just one of these pools. Agnes Butalo had the whimsical audacity to place a frozen drowner entangled in frosted water lilies. Her pale fingers pressed against the ponds surface, towards the ice skaters while she remained suspended in her dark pond world. It’s little details like those that created Gasps and Awwws from all who saw them . ‘This prize better be good!’ murmured one attendee and that sentiment was shared by many so impressed they were by the designs. The Filigree will publish a picture of the winning piece in next Quarters Paper.

the Incredible Powers of young Miss Zlata Frost 14 yr. old can Easily Overpower small Giant

14

year old girl wonder Zlata Frost put on an amazing show in Riley on Saturday night and the crowd was permanently placed at the edge of their seats with pure excitement. And the action started right away. She appeared on stage in a darling mint green & black jumper with her hair twisted in braids, looking all the picture of innocence until 3 large, beefy gentlemen from the audience were hand plucked to charge the girl. At first she looked shocked and a genuine sensation of wanting to help her rumbled the crowd but then suddenly she reached out with her long, skinny arms on either side and lifted 2 of the men high in the air and then tossed them off the stage like you would any old piece of trash. The men somersaulted down the aisles and not a one felt pity for them as they were both perfectly padded in their suits of chub. Miss Zlata then slapped her hands together and jumped high in the air, landing on the stage with a deafening bang. The remaining man was thrown off balance and toppled backwards. An approving roar swept through the audience.

...

Nor did a butterfly get uneasy and not even the smallest tremble from a candle!

Next, a small giant was chosen to sit himself on an average kitchen table chair and was promptly given orders to resist any attempt of Miss Frost at being lifted. One could see straight off that the giant tried with all of his might to press down and veins bulged and breath was held but Zlata was calm and crouched down. She pushed the mighty load across the floor and just as he was about to fall forward he was lifted up. Shaky at first and then with a strength never before seen on anyone, he was suspended by the frail girl midair! She then rolled off stage and stood a second before the audience holding them captivated and then she gave one of her trademark jumps that rattled the eyes and bones of the crowd. Then, she walked up and down the aisles surveying the folk with her watchful, green eyes that seemed to belong to a woman and not a skinny 14 yr. old. Suddenly, she whistled a piercing whistle and a swarm of butterflies and birds filled the auditorium and landed on a tree that was wheeled on stage in a gigantic pot. In seconds, they had covered the tree and the crowd was stunned by these sudden unexpected events. Zlata hopped up on stage and gave one of her monstrous jumps which upset the butterflies and birds and made them flutter around. It was clearly to demonstrate that the butterflies and birds did what they wanted and not what she wished them to do. She then filled the tree with small

candles that were perched in golden holders on all the branches and lit them. The spectacle was gorgeous to behold! A tree full of flickering candles and the chitter chattering of birds and delicate shiverings of butterflies. In a stunning finally, she grasped the trunk of the tree at the bottom and slowly started to budge the gigantic thing out of the pot! She began to lift it so gracefully but with so much strength and assurance that not a bird flew off! Nor did a butterfly get uneasy and not even the smallest tremble from a candle! There, she held the thing in mid-air much to the delight and exasperation of the entire crowd! They were on their feet instantly, which of course sent the birds and the butterflies into a flurry of fear. Zlata Frost wowed the crowd Saturday with her monstrous Jumps. She quickly replaced the tree and invited all success is promised to the young Miss Zlata who wished to join her on the stage for a Frost if she continues to make tricks as Origisurvey of her latest in astounding new tricks nal , Mind-boggling and as Beautiful as that that will be impossible to duplicate. Much last one.

Kite Cutters prepare for Spring in Blue Ballroom T

he Sabol Kite Flying Club has taken over the Blue Ballroom in the Minadarko Caverns to practice for the upcoming Spring Competitions. The far end section of the Moultries boasts one of the largest ballrooms in all the caves with stunning stalagmites and tites that present unique challenges to the kite cutters that are always trying to perfect their techniques. Warm lagoon waters mixing with air chutes also make for ideal wind gusts for the kitests. Curious on-lookers speckle the balconies around or the shores and it didn’t take long before the famous kitests were spotted. The most well known, of course, was Lady Nay Alderade daughter of prominent

kitest, Reg. Phidian Alderade the Third and from one of the most respected kite cutting pioneer families around. An extra boost of excitement rippled through the crowd upon seeing the young girl that accompanied Lady Nay and was busy at practice with her own kite. She was immediately identified as Lady Nay’s young niece, Miss Etta Perev and one could see while watching her expert flick of her wrists that jerked and swooped that kiting was not a new sport for her. It is assumed that she will be making her Kite debut in the Springtime for the great competition the Sabol Club has planned.

Hattie Hennagir Unveils Yearly Winter Garden

I

f anybody has attended one of the Yearly Winter Gardens of Hattie Hennagir then they’ll know it is an unparalleled Frozen Fete. With sparkling, diamond like icicles that drip from the ceiling that end in little levers you can pull to taste wonderfully, Wintry concoctions and an abundance of snowy decor, it has come to be known as the premier Winter Event.

Winter is a time to come inside and celebrate each other

,

The sprawling Chariton townhouse which sits snug on entire city block flings open its crystal like doors for a night of Season Celebration with Color, Dance, Song and Frozen Frolics and any and all who are lucky enough to obtain an invite will be assured an evening of Spectacle. From the glossy, stone floors to the bustling of icy gowns that begin to dance

when the Frosty Clad Band begin, there is always something to fill the eyes. Especially tables of unbelievable treats to get the guests in the Wintry mood and not everything is as Icy Cold as you would suspect. There is an abundance of Cake, Pies and Tortettes weighted heavily down with frosting scrollwork that sail down a frozen river of fanciful tables piled high with the sweets. Crystal’d cupcakes in cold pastels with little creatures atop their powdery hills. Snowmen and Snowflakes. Frozen lakes and snow figurettes in lilacs and dusty blues and an array of warmed drinks kept simmering by colorful candles broke up the icy spell. In between all the dancing, guests enjoyed the tart pucker of cider, cocoa or spiced wine with generous servings of nuts and dried fruits. All the while, relaxing in the grand atriums with their collections of fairy ferns, garlands of crimson strawberry vines and holly polka dots. These breaks were few and far in between as the band was hard to resist . The evening unfolded itself into a full on Revelry with stomping feet, sweaty brow and wild eyes and Hattie Hennagir wouldn’t have it any other way, ‘Winter is a time to come inside and celebrate each other.’ Everyone gasped when they saw Her & Henry reunited & doing a Jig.

‘Traveling South for the Winter’

a Feathered Friends Companion Book by Starren Stellea

I

’ve heard the groans and I’ve seen the eyes roll from countless others of my feathered friends that moan in Winter, ‘You’re not going there, are you?’ ‘What’s wrong with there?’ I ask back thinking to myself all the while, ‘is there no place left exciting? Have we, as a bird people— seen it all? Heavens No! And the sheer audacity to think we have is nonsense, Pure and True. Why, just last Winter I spent a charming season on the Isle of Keokuk and there wasn’t a soul around. Sure, we have to fly south for the Winter, but how south must we go? Has anyone ever considered stopping just a few days early or must we always shoot south to the extremes? To the ever populated hum of tourists desperate to make a nest and to ‘integrate’, whistling nervously all the while insisting they are content. It is for this creature of Habit that I have created my companion book. For the creature that not only doesn’t think out of the box but theFiligree.com

is wholly unaware there even is a box! I have sought out little treasure troves nestled secret in Trees, meadows that are warm with the golden afternoon sun, and sunny day that follows another sunny day where the only worry is what to do with all the food! The companion book is for the bird who yearns for something different but doesn’t know where to begin. I tell him to break from the flock! Gather a small group and seek something different and let this Winter be your first Adventure!

Frozen Under Pond Happenings N

ow that the regions have turned Icier and many are covered in shimmering white it is of the upmost importance to remember all the wonderful happenings that take place on the other side of Frozen Ponds, Lakes, Rivers and Bays. _For many the idea of being submerged in icy, unfathomable lakes sounds like something out of your worst nightmares while others the change in temperature is but a subtle shift and bears little annoyance to their thick skins. However, there are an abundance of possibilities for both of these groups. There will be a tour of Artist’s Studios in Norwood Forest the last Sunday of each Winter month from 2-6 pm. An enormous cluster of Artists studios sits under the Pataky River along the coast of Trementon. A detailed map will be available at the Norwood Forest Comm. College. Many of the studios are fully dry and insulated

T

he Creature who was discovered last month by a group of spelunkers in a far off section of the Moultrian Caves seems to be flourishing in her new life, above ground. Gwendolyn Mallie, who can still neither speak coherently or write has communicated to investigators her name by pointing out letters and in this way was able to explain what had happened to her. Apparently, she had fallen down a cave chute and lived trapped for 2,111 days until her rescue. She sustained herself off of roots and fresh water which there was an abundance of both.

against the freezing water temperatures while still enjoying the wonderful water light through their many windows. For those that can bear the freezing wet their are plenty of aquatic artists who will definitely interest them with their lovely little studios situated in small caves, under rocks or in the thick muck at the bottom of the river. River, Pond and Lake artists boast some of the most intriguing art available today. From clay to metal work, glass and figurative sculpture the observer is sure not to be bored. The chilly can visit many insulated and non insulated cafes that will be serving many of their specialties to recharge the weary wonderer. Several band, comediennes and poetry readings are scheduled to take place and will be listed on Event Posters.

lived trapped for 2,111 days

Since, public demand is so great in seeing Gwendolyn Mallie, she has agreed to do an art performance that will explain her journey though movements, strange song and several costume changes. Talks are also currently being held about a possible tell all book in which it is expected readers will definitely devour her story. Performance will be held: Llmar’s Main Public Library Feb. 5 at 6 pm

Dobrilla Skeen Returns to Eavesdrop E

avesdroppers from Deuth to Sinfai! Listen up: Mme. Dobrilla Skeen will hold her master classes at Carivell University ranging from Beginner - Advanced all Winter long. Mme. Skeen shot to fame 10 yrs. ago with her best selling book. ‘I can Hear, m’Dear’ which shook Eavesdropping communities by using state of the Art techniques never before heard and which have since become ‘Dobrillian’.

We must learn to Hear again

,

Before Mme. Skeen,’ said community college teacher, Will McClure of Beg. Eavesdropping, ‘it was just something you did, maybe half by accident or willingly but she’s made it into an Art Form.’ Shaking off the heavy blanket of traditional Eavedropping, Dobrillian techniques combine, ‘ear perking’, ‘eyebrow pointing’, and holding fingers poised mid-air to a create a tension in the senses thus allowing them to become more sharpened to every small

sound, no matter how tiny. Mme. Skeen has created a complicated training program that teaches the students which muscles to activate, how to stand and the essentials to fine tuning the senses that are normally numb to the World— ‘Before I took one of her classes, I thought Eavesdroppers were creeps and the whole process was weird. Now I see the Art in it. Now I see the Necessity in it. It’s self-defense. It’s enlightening and might be a life saver,’ aspiring Eavesdropper, Hilda Jenkins said. Another added, ‘Both my sisters were eaten by some beast in the woods— didn’t hear him sneaking up. Eavesdropping is about that. To hear all things at all times. It has nothing to do with Gossip.’ Dobrilla emphasizes this in her lectures and training courses, ‘We must learn to Hear again. We must breathe deep and want to Hear. Everything. Not just the things that are Pleasant, but the Ugly, too. That is what Evaesdropping is.’ Classes will run from Jan. 15- Mar. 15 with schedules in a variety of levels and regardless of age. All are Welcome! Dobrilla Skeen, Eavesdropping Pioneer

itting down one Wintry, dark afternoon, well— there was a tap-tap at my door. When I opened it, there wasn’t a soul there. Just a little parcel, all nice and wrapped up— still warm. I opened it and there was a book. Flipping through the pages, I could smell something spicy like cinnamon, although the pages looked new. Wasn’t it just what I needed! Before a crackling fire with quilts wrapped around my feet and a hot cup of tea, I began to read, ‘Winter Diversions, Gossip hidden in the Chill’ by Doga Mettone. Small little stories that follow the characters from one Winter encounter to another. From a Tearoom to a Speedway to a Cellar to Sleep, it seems Winter followed me throughout! Looking out my window there was only blackness beyond. Not even a faint flicker of a star. Why was Winter’s cloak so heavy?

I have a confession, the tap at the door, it was really the postman but it was so dark I could barely see him walking away. The book did seem like it was sent to me anyhow, even though I ordered it myself. I’ve always been a fan of Doga Mettone, ever since she wrote, ‘Chimneyscape.’ Now, with these long nights, if you’re looking for an adventure where you don’t have to leave your comfy chair, then I highly recommend picking up one of Doga Mettone’s mysteries today. Order them and they will come in the Night to your door...

the Art of Present Packing with Pernecia Simms

Y

ou must never take a simple box and fling it in to a bag! This, to a present packer is like stepping over a gardeners flowers for she only assumes you carefully selected your gift on the basis of thoughtfulness and love, hmmm? Now then! We must visit some stores. Walk in and thank the attendant and tell him you’ll browse by yourself for starters and alert him if you need any help. Look carefully at the items lined up on the wall, or on shelves. Inspecting their ingredients, their assemblage and care to detail, you should survey the entire object. On its underside. Beneath the lid and even sniff it. Many great things have come out of a good sniffing, poisons are highly offensive to the nose! Moving on,.. see if the object is in your price range and not too inexpensive as to offend. It must be a keepsake that every time the receiver rests their eyes upon it they will think of you making it a very important relic. Take time to look around the shop at other things while putting a little mental check besides the items you like. Browse everything and yes, occasionally sniffing. Pretty glass pendants are a nice offering and it is a sweet idea to put a picture of yourself in them or a lock of hair. There are also picture frames that are neither too expensive nor too cheap. A paint brush set is always a welcome gift as are nice stationary sets for letter correspondence. _Grooming kits are in bad taste, however. You will not want to insinuate to the receiver that he or she needs a good brushing of hair, teeth or coat. No cleaning items either such as nail clippers, filers or hair grow tonics for obvious reasons. This narrows your list considerably. I must state that I wouldn’t want

anyone to think that perfumes are on the above mentioned list for they are not! Perfumes are always a much welcome and revered gift. Nothing like an elegantly packed bottle of your favorite concoction.

...

Many great things have come out of a good sniffing

Then of course there are Magical Gifts but unless in extremely good taste these could startle an older person and upset a sensitive one. One year, a friend of mine told me in secret about a magic box that had been given to her elderly father. Such beauty and ornate detail! He had marvelled at the good taste it had been fashioned, however— upon opening it, 3 tiny creatures hopped out and did a little song and dance in shrill voices and then quickly poofed into smoke so upsetting the old man that he grasped at his heart and began turning purple! My friend calmed him promptly with a cool hand to the forehead and was finally able to soothe him, but it was a scare that was never to happen again. And for what? The beautiful box shattered when it hit the floor. Magic is best left to younger generations. Now that you have chosen your object and made sure it is the one you want take it up to the register and have the clerk wrap it in only tissue, for you will be wrapping it yourself. We now move along to a ribbon shop as ribbons are the crowning glory on any present. Most modern ribbon stores carry a variety of silken embellishments, dried fruit and flowers that make for lovely gift toppers.

When browsing the rows of gorgeous ribbons you must keep in mind the color of your object. Is it Blue? Maybe yellow? It will decide your entire wrapping, of course. Make sure your ribbons are of the finest quality and pay no attention to price as you will only be needing a small amount. After you have chosen a fine ribbon scan the walls of embellishments and look closely! Sometimes there are little glass ornaments or smaller keepsakes that look lovely twisted in a delicate bow. Be sure to gather a fancy yet modest bouquet of the flowers and fruit and although I’m not partial to feathers many insist the fluffy things look nice and not silly, that is up to your discretion. As for the wrapping paper there are many boutiques that specializes in the finest of paper to please the eyes but as for myself, I’ve always preferred old and discolored newspapers such as the Filigree as they tell stories and lend life to the package which sometimes can risk becoming to sterile and we definitely do not want that. If you opt for the newsprint it must be noted all objects should first be tissue wrapped. After all is safely snug in their fine box with tissue and wrapped you can take your tiny bouquet of dried flowers, fruit and/or feathers and set them atop the knot of the ribbon that has been wrapped around the box very simply. Dangle your additional keepsake from the knot and then make an elegant, inviting Bow. That should make any creature very pleased to see all the thought you put into their gift and they’ll be certain to do it for you!

Snow

an Anonymous Confession N

ever does anything in Nature have the power to unite like the Snow. It can melt a bitter mans heart and add a twinkle to his eye. It can shut down cities and blur the boundaries of habit and it can gather all creatures together in its Wintry embrace. Snow. Being myself a subterranean creature I harbor strong feelings for the flurrying substance. No, we don’t have powdered piles of the stuff down below but we do have many petite piles that we call polka dots that gently fall through many holes. A lovely sight through the darkened cave tunnels, and a welcome one, too. Poking your head out during the first snow especially through a newly dug hole is a wonder. To wear a little snow cap and peek around in the White Wonderland so all of a sudden glowing and sparkling is to me the true magic of Winter. Tender paws that take only seconds to coarsen to the cold, leave tiny tracks and yearn to ice skate! Chased by a frosty chill across a glassy surface, freezing quickly becomes a distant memory. Trees with boughs that handg heavily down look as if they’ve been dipped 12 – Winter ‘09

in diamonds and occasionally a large bang of snow falling suddenly or an enormous icicle that’s crashed, startles. We don’t have our houses that are fashioned in the dangerous yet beautiful spikes of the icicle. How it must be to have your windows framed in frosted spider webs of ice and to be inside warmed by a fire gazing out. Many a time have I stared becoming lost in those warmed interior rooms.

...

this is the time when I yearn to move away and up into the Snow

Of course, I have relatives that live in just those snug houses with powdery piles atop their slanted roofs and sitting soft and cotton like around their walls that have invited me in more times than I can count. We nibble on their cinnamony treats and giggle

at our entrapment when it starts to snow, adding even more to the piles. There is a sensation of happily giving up and settling down when it snows. Children run outside in it and collect snowflakes on their tongues, make angels or snowmen, or small tunnels that lead form one side of the road to the next. Snowball fight after snowball fight breaks out. And at night Winter’s snowy back shimmers like a lake of stardust under a full Moon. Although snow is scarce down below we enjoy a constant temperature year round and that is also something to boast of. It is dry and never rains and the natural wonder of the cavernous ballrooms is almost unparalleled. But this is the time when I yearn to move away and up into the Snow. A little nest with a warm fire someplace, the bright Wintry light. Someplace where I can people watch out of those windows framed in dripping Ice. Maybe one Enchantingly Snowy Winter, I will but for now I’ll have to enjoy my tiny little snowy polka dots. Happy Winter to All! A&E

. . . ! from the Horsetorian p l e

Dear Mr. Horstorian, My neighbor is what you would call a ‘Lone Wolf’. His yard’s a mess and he’s always marking his territory. Then there’s the parties, which I can live with, but the Full Moon ones I simply can no longer stand. Everyone’s freaking out!
