Oscar Wilde once said, “In the world there are only two tragedies. One is not getting what one want, and the other is getting it.”

As we ponder on this unrealistic quote, a relatable desire of killing all drivers in Cairo shines seductively, but will the long-term consequence will be as pleasant?

We often mix up our wants and likes with small and big decisions. This misalignment occurs when we attribute feelings to the wrong source. A dream job may require a prerequisite decade of hard work, certificates, and challenges, but can turn out to be not much like what we desired!

Even if we know exactly what we want, we sometimes have incorrect theories about how much we will like it because our decisions are based on erroneous theories about ourselves. A simple example is; do you often feel satisfied after you eat something you craved for? Man boobs are not that thrilling!

You might also date a super, hard-to-get woman and experience severe happiness, but this feeling in reality springs from your excitement about being finally in a relationship, period. It has nothing to do with you liking her. Misunderstanding our feelings can deviate us from doing what we truly like.

Not only do we often dislike what we thought we wanted, but we end up liking what we never thought we wanted, too! You think self-development courses are for weak personalities until you experience a great improvement in your self; you swear off marriage for years until you fall in love with a special lady; you avoid books until you immerse in one that changes your life course; you think pink shirts look gay until you try one and find how it complements you, etc.

The concept of burying our dreams to pursue tangible materials and shallow goals has been a common morality tale for a long time. And not falling into this trap is something that is consciously disregarded.

It is important to define your likes and be aligned with your needs and your self all the time to truly understand the desires of your heart. If you look at things from pessimistic perspectives or overlook significant signs of odious feelings, you are only fooling yourself. A journal can help you get a better idea of what you really like as opposed to what you think you like, because writing is the only time when you get to expose the desires of your heart bluntly without fooling yourself or making it rosier or hazier.

Remember, the key to understanding your self is to dig into it, genuinely and sincerely.

A MAN’S GUIDE TO CHOOSING THE RIGHT FRAGRANCE

There are invisible parts of our personal style that have a powerful, long-lasting effect on people around us. Fragrance offers numerous benefits; from boosting your confidence and mood to making you more attractive. It can foster deeper emotional connections with people, deliver a sharp and manly impression, and save memories through your “emotional brain.” Yet, not any fragrance can compliment your style or body odor. Let’s take a look at what defines a fragrance…

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FRAGRANCE, PERFUME, TOILETTE, AND COLOGNE?

hence the most expensive form of fragrance, comprised of 20-30% pure perfume essence and more oil. A single application can last up to 24 hours.

THE LIFE CYCLE OF FRAGRANCES

There is a three-part life cycle in a perfume that is often portrayed in a pyramid; where the top slowly disappears until you reach the base note.

Top note. When you apply a perfume, you immediately smell light floral scents, citrus, fruity scents, powdery scents, marines and aquatics, and spices such as cinnamon. This note is called the top note, and usually lasts from 15 minutes to two hours.

Medium note. The middle note reveals the main element of the fragrance and usually lasts from three to five hours. This note usually include heavier floral scents such as jasmine, or green scents such as grass or stone, or spice scents such as cinnamon and clove.

Fragrance is another term used for perfume.

It can be unisex and can come in many forms and generally falls into these categories: EauFraiche. The most diluted version of fragrance, usually with 1-3% perfume oil in alcohol and water. Usually lasts for less than an hour.

Base note. The base note determines how long the fragrance will stay on your skin.

They tend to get bolder and be noticeable by the end of the day. Typical base notes are sandalwood, moss, vetiver, vanilla, tar, leather, smoke, tobacco, and musk, and can last from five to ten hours.

Cologne (Eau de Cologne). It is more common among young men due to its light, fruity tone and shore effect. It is typically composed of 2-4% perfume oils in alcohol and water and lasts for about two hours.

Toilette (Eau de Toilette). It is a more concentrated, pure perfume with 5-15% perfume essence dissolved in alcohol. Eau de toilette can last for about three hours.

Perfume (Eau de Parfum). Mostly common among both genders, the fragrance contains 15-20% pure perfume essence and lasts for about five to eight hours.

LINEAR VS NON-LINEAR FRAGRANCES

Linear fragrances usually sustain its scent until you wash it off. Non-linear, on the other hand, will go through layers of notes over time. To know if the fragrance is of good or bad quality, try it on and smell it all day long. If it smells the same the entire time it is worn, then it may be a cheap one. If you experience transitions and contract from day to night, then it is a quality one.

HOW TO SELECT THE RIGHT PERFUME/COLOGNE?

To refresh your palate, smell something wrong like coffee between smelling each cologne.

If you are decided on which brand to buy, buy the smaller bottle. Why? Simply because it is lower risk. Your taste may change and you may not feel comfortable wearing the same brand until the last drop. Moreover, perfumes do not last forever on the shelf. Rapid heat fluctuations can break molecules apart. To extend the lifespan of your perfume, store it in a cool, dark place.

RULES FOR FRAGRANCE APPLICATION

Spray perfume on dry skin right after a shower and keep it three to six inches away from your skin.

To push the scent throughout the day, spray perfume on heat areas, such as chest, neck, lower jaw, wrist, forearm, inner elbow, shoulder. Choose one to three spots only and re-spray only when required.

Some men rub their wrists after spraying.

This breaks the molecular bond and make the scent weaker.

Don’t spray perfume on your clothes. It may not only stain the fabrics, but also fail to go through the stages of the notes like it should.

Don’t spray and walk and don’t spray excessively. Do it consciously. Walking while spraying is worthless and spraying excessively push people away. Only those who stand close to you should be able to smell your perfume.

Arms and Shoulders: Your arms and shoulder should support your body weight when you do the glide and the push down.

Core: Without strong core muscles, you will not be able to bring your legs up to the bar or pike up or glide, or even do the push down.

TOOLS FOR LEARNING A KIP Pull up bar, kettlebells, sliders, and therabands are all tool that can strengthen your muscles you need to employ the workout in your regimen.

EXERCISES YOU CAN DO AT HOME Wide Grip Pull Ups: With your hands more than shoulder width apart, hang on a bar and pull until the bar reaches chin level. Pause, then repeat.

Plank: On a mat, place your hands directly under your shoulders slightly wider than shoulder-width apart.

Squeeze your gluteus, keep a straight form, and ground your toes into the floor. Hold the position for minimum 20 seconds.

Kettlebell Deadlift: Stand with feet about shoulder width apart with toes slightly turned out. Kettlebell should be between your feet. Inhale, then hinge at the hips and reach for the kettlebell while keeping a neutral spine. Then push through your legs and return to a standing position.

V-Ups: On a mat, lie face up with your body, arms, and legs straight. Keep your arms straight above the top of your head. Lift your torso and legs as if you are trying to reach your toes simultaneously in one movement. Your torso and thighs should make a “V� letter. Lower your body back to the initial position and repeat.

HOW TO PRACTICE THE GLIDE?

Grab the bar, take a little hop, and glide forward and backward slightly hard as if you are going to lose your grip on the bar. You may lead with your pelvis or touch the wall with your toes. What 30 | July 2018

HOW TO PRACTICE THE PULL UP? To practice the pull up at home, lie on your back with a hollow body and reach above your head, as you visualize the bar.

Perform the movement multiple times and note where your hands end up. Chances are you're not pulling through enough to get your hips even with the bar.

HOW TO PRACTICE THE PUSH DOWN?

You can also practice this movement at home with a slight modification; you will need to carry the motion all the way through. If you execute the movement correctly, you should end up sitting instead of lying. Note that performing this movement correctly will never be easy.

FUNCTIONAL WAYS TO BOOST ENDURANCE AND STAMINA Some people say, those who maintain consistency lack ambition. While consistency is the key to everlasting success, performance is what lands you in a better place. If every day can be an opportunity to widen your knowledge and practice a new skill, it can surely progress your physical ability… only if you pursue it.

Unlike many things in this world, endurance and stamina are chased and not found. A distance you find challenging today will feel much easier tomorrow if you train consistently. Until one day, you will look back and notice that what you once found challenging is now an easy task to do.

To boost those two fitness disciplines, you need to combine cardio with strength training. While cardio activities like running and cycling pump up your heart and your cardiovascular system, it is only a small part of the endurance-building equation. Hence, you need to weave strength days into your training, to build your muscles, not only to propel further in every step you take while running, but to also add less stress on these muscles.

Compound movements, like squats, pushups, and step-ups, can stimulate your stamina and endurance more than isolated movements like bicep curls and leg lifts.

Explosive movements, like burpees, box jumps and power push-ups, are another way to build strength, endurance, and stamina simultaneously. Remember, routine is your enemy; so switch your workout and spice up your routine.

Building on that, you need to be consistent and run farther by adding 5 – 10 minutes each time. Consistent raining will build your aerobic base, boost your aerobic capacity, and enhance your muscles. You should aim for three to four runs for not less than half an hour. Increase running time or mileage gradually if you are planning to partake in a marathon. The key is to start slow and focus on distance, then develop speed later. To ignite your workout even more, incorporate tempo runs – a run at ‘comfortable hard’ pace before fatigue.

These runs are vital for improving your running speed and should not exceed 40 – 60 minutes.

Certainly, food completes the equation.

Before your long run, make sure to eat a carb-based meal to provide your body with enough energy to sustain a run for long time. Complex carbohydrates, such as whole grains, brown rice, and oatmeal, are more recommended than refined carbs to avoid blood sugar spikes. Opt for 55 – 65% of your calorie intake from carbs, but be mindful of the type of carbohydrates you consume.

Last but not least, recovery between sessions is mandatory for your physical well-being. The third point of the triangle ensures that your body is ready for the upcoming workout and sufficiently absorbs the nutrients and refuels your energy.

Always make sure to stretch after a workout, include protein in your postworkout meal, and get enough sleep at night.

Upper body strength: Yes. Everything else: No. Caffeine is one of the most highly used drugs in the world and is popular as an ergogenic aid for athletes. Although it has been removed from the International Olympic Committee banned substance list, caffeine consumption is still monitored in competitive athletes. A study was conducted, and published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research that looked at the effects of caffeine on strength, muscular endurance and anaerobic activity. The research showed caffeine did not have an effect on lower-body strength, muscular endurance, anaerobic capabilities or upper body muscular endurance.

The study did show that drinking a moderate dose of caffeine approximately 1 hour prior to activity resulted in an increase in upperbody strength in resistance-trained men.

One of the biggest exercise myths is that you can lose fat in an area of the body by strength training or exercising that specific body part. The truth is that “spot reducing” and “spot toning” do not work, because we cannot dictate from where our bodies will decide to oxidize fat, nor can we change fat into muscle. Doing triceps press-downs will not decrease the amount of fat clients have on the backs of their arms any more than doing crunches will decrease the amount of fat clients have on their stomachs. As your clients age, their skin will become less elastic and thus conform less to their arms. So “flabby arms” are somewhat a product of age. Any exercise that decreases body fat percentage will help your clients lose fat on their arms, just as it will help them lose fat from other areas of the body.

The type if discipline that keeps you going even during great disappointments and physical challenges, for there is no shortcut to greatness but great work to make the heard stuff easy. Today we contemplate on the most decorated Olympian in history; 23 gold medals and 13 individual golds.

HIGH BLOOD SUGAR: WHAT YOU NEED TO DO BEFORE YOUR 50S Many people experience signs and symptoms of diabetes at a certain phase of life and strive to sustain adequate level in consultation with a specialized doctor.

Suddenly, thirst, urination, blurry vision, slow healing of cuts, and other categories become the center of their every day lives, without fully understanding why these symptoms occurred from the first place! Never did they ask, how does high blood glucose cause frequent urination, make your vision go blurry, or barley heal your cuts and injuries?

High blood glucose (called hyperglycemia by medical professionals) is the defining characteristic of all types of diabetes. The disease occurs when the body fails to maintain normal blood glucose level; either because the pancreas is no longer making enough insulin, or because the body’s cells have become so resistant to insulin that the pancreas cannot handle and glucose is accumulating in the bloodstream rather than being moved into the cells. Hyperglycemia can be acute – the result of a highcarbohydrate meal, stress, missed dose of medicine, or illness – or chronic – long-term elevated blood glucose that could be the consequence of undiagnosed diabetes or inadequate diabetes treatment. The latter can cause a toxic effect on the body’s tissues or cellular damage.

Usually, blood glucose is considered too high when it exceeds 130 mg/dl before a meal or 180 mg/dl two hours after the first bite of a meal. However, signs and symptoms are usually experienced when the level of blood glucose is higher than 25o mg/dl. This means that symptoms either have a rapid onset or longer appearance. Also, some people are more sensitive to the effects of high blood glucose.

THE SYMPTOMS OF HIGH BLOOD GLUCOSE:

Excessive Urination Medically known as Polyuria, the sign is the result of a runaway biological and chemical chain reaction that feeds on itself. The end result exceeds the normal 2.5 liters per day urine, to reach 15 liters per day within patients with extremely high blood glucose and 20-25 liters per day in rare cases. The dehydrating effect of polyuria is a key player in many of the other signs and symptoms of high blood glucose, including polydipsia.

Excessive Thirst Polydipsia is a response to the dehydrating effects of polyuria, where the body attempt to rehydrate itself. Specialized cells in the hypothalamus known as osmoreceptors detect the level of dehydration of the blood and trigger thirst signals to the brain to urge the person to drink fluids. In short, excessive thirst is caused by excessive urination and not the other way around. The problem is that some people reach for sugary soda drinks to compensate for their sense of thirst, which in return raise the blood glucose level and make the case worse.

Excessive Hunger Low insulin level is the main drive behind excessive hunger, where it can be either a complete shortage of insulin, as in Type 1 diabetes, or a relative shortage of insulin, as in Type 2 diabetes. In both cases, the amount of insulin in the blood is insufficient to move glucose molecules from the bloodstream into the cells, where they can be used as fuel for cellular processes. This ultimately leads to hunger pangs that make high blood glucose worse when a person responds by eating.

Weight Loss While it sounds contradicting to the previous point, you lose weight when blood glucose is high due to three reasons; First, the loss of fluids from excessive urination can lead to a low level of body fluids, which can make you weigh less. Second, your body may burn fat to maintain cellular metabolism if insulin levels are too low for glucose metabolism.

Such case may lead to weight loss. Third, the large amount of urine that is resulted from high blood pressure is rich with glucose, and glucose is full of calories, which means that you are technically urinating calories.

Slow Healing of Wounds You have probably seen patients with high blood sugar very cautious with your movements and with what they wear in their feet. The reason for this is that high blood glucose keeps neutrophils, the most common type of leukocyte in the immune system’s arsenal, from sticking to the inner lining of the blood vessels (endothelium), which disrupts chemotaxis from healing the skin and softtissue infections.

Blurred Vision Acute high blood glucose can elevate dehydration effect of excessive urination which triggers blurry vision. When the concentration of glucose in the blood is high, the body attempts to dilute the blood by pulling fluid from cells into the bloodstream, including those of the eyes. This can dry out the eyes and cause loss of proper focus.

Chronic high blood glucose, on the other hand, can cause damage to the back of the eye. This can largely affect vision and even lead to blindness.

Erectile Dysfunction Erectile dysfunction, or difficulty maintaining an erection, is a common side effect of high blood glucose. About half of men with diabetes over the age of 50 experience it due to presence if unhealthy and unstable erection, that healthy nerves, healthy blood flow, the right balance of hormones, and sexual stimulation. High blood glucose can adversely affect erections in three ways: hormonal, vascular, and neurologic. On the hormonal side, high blood glucose interferes with the body’s making of nitric oxide, a socalled vasodilator that activates the hormonal chain reaction that relaxes the blood vessels and allows the corpora cavernosa to fill with blood. On the vascular front, high blood glucose can damage the blood vessels and reduce the ability of the supply arteries to dilate. In a similar way, nerve damage from high blood glucose can affect both sensation and nerve signaling involved in the erection process.

HOW TO GET HIGH BLOOD GLUCOSE INTO CONTROL?

Even though the signs and symptoms are warning indicators to major health problem that require attention and improvement, they can easily cause permanent damage to the body if left untreated for a long time. Blood glucose should be in control all the time by eating right and keeping an active lifestyle.

INGREDIENTS:

1 ½ chicken thighs 1 lb. rice 1 onion, cut into wedges 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 1 small red chilli, thinly sliced 2 tbsp. coconut oil 4 tbsp. curry paste 13.5 oz. can premium coconut oil 1/3 cup shelled edamame 2 tbsp. cilantro for garnish 1 tsp. ground turmeric Salt and pepper to taste

DIRECTIONS:

In a wok, heat one tablespoon oil over high heat and then cook the chicken thighs, stirring every 4-5 minutes or until golden. Chicken should be marinated with salt and pepper.

Reduce heat to medium-high then add the remaining tablespoon of oil and cook the onion and garlic. Add one tablespoon turmeric, curry paste, and chili. Cook until aromatic. Stir in the coconut milk and bring to boil.

Meanwhile, cook rice as per package prescription or in a steamer.

Bring chicken to the wok again and reduce heat.

Leave it for 15 to 20 minutes. Serve with lime wedges.

RIB EYE KABOBS Time: 40 minutes Yield: 4 servings Energy: 270 calories

INGREDIENTS:

16 oz. bison rib eye, cut into 20inch cubes 2 yellow bell pepper, chopped into big chunks 2 red bell pepper, chopped into big chunks 1 red onion, chopped into big chunks.

4 tbsp. low sodium soy sauce 2 tbsp. Worcestershire 2 tbsp. garlic, minced 1 ½ Dijon mustard 2 tsp. sesame seeds Fresh lemon juice to taste

DIRECTIONS:

Fire up a grill to about 300F. In a bowl, combine soy sauce, Worcestershire, Dijon mustard, garlic, sesame seeds, and lemon juice. Mix well.

Add the bison rob eye chunks and cover with plastic wrap for one hour in the refrigerator.

Assemble the kabobs, onions, and bell pepper in sticks with a repeating pattern. Then place them in the hottest part of the grill and cook for 5 minutes. Flip and cook for another 5 minutes or until it reaches your desired readiness.

AHL MASR FOUNDATION 3RD ANNUAL FUNDRAISING SOHOUR AT MARRIOTT MENA HOUSE, CAIRO As part of Marriott international’s continuous initiative to support the community known as “Serve 360”: Doing good in every direction the Marriott Mena House, Cairo had the pleasure to host Ahl Masr annual sohour with the mighty Pyramids backdrop. During the event Ahl Masr announced the launch of a new initiative- Ashet El Asamy (long live names). The initiative aims to encourage people to buy an engraved brick with their names or names of their beloved ones to raise funds to support building the first non-profit, specialized hospital in treating Burn Victims in the Middle East and North Africa for free.
