PAUL ANTAKI INTERVIEW INSIDE>>

THE MASTER OF ELEGANCE

EDITOR’S NOTE Get Off the Hook … DECISIVELY

S

ome good friend advised me once to be more decisive with my life decisions. I still remember how much I wondered around this piece of advice, with hundreds of questions around my head, like what did he mean, or which particular part of my story made him instruct me with decisiveness. I kept overthinking it and asking many random questions and all of a sudden; I caught myself once questioning my own self-trust! Since then, life has never been the same; and yes, I mean it, by all means –not a cliché at all. I realized that a lot of stuff in life we tend to do or react accordingly only due to external pressure, not based on our own will. Then I started to relate the thought to some real-life experiences; I related to different kind of situations where I wasn’t courage enough to take decisions. I found myself recalling an old job that I have been trying to quit but couldn’t take my decision to do so because I knew how much it was going to influence the business; claiming that it was responsibility. It had nothing to do with the responsibility anyway, but it had to do with me by all means! I came across when I was extremely hesitant to get rid of some toxic relationships in my life. Well; I figured out that it was me, too. It could be that I loved the people to the extent that I couldn’t let them out, or maybe I didn’t know what is the best way to do it. These are all options; however, what I am certain about it that I wasn’t really sure of the decision I thought I wanted to do; so, enough self-sabotaging for now. The main purpose here is learning to take our life decisions, no matter in what aspect. And what is important equally, is to be ready to handle the consequences of our decisions, the good and bad ones. I learned also to keep in mind that most of the times, there’s no turning back from our decisions. So we better think about and calculate it very, very well. One a side note, one of the things that made me capable to manage this proactive change in my life –still needs improvement- is acquiring the saying “NO” skill, and worth noting that it is not the matter of just spelling the word out, but actually not feeling guilty afterwards.

IN STYLE - WATCHES

TOP OPTIONS TO OPT FOR WHEN YOU FEEL LIKE A CHRONOGRAPH WATCH Timepieces with a chronograph function definitely have something about them. Perhaps it’s the fact they’ve been integral to the history of automotive sport, aviation and space travel. A chronograph makes an excellent choice as an everyday watch because it can be styled down as well as up so can be worn casually with trousers or more formally with a suit. Strictly speaking one ought to wear a dress watch with formal evening wear; it’s just more elegant. A chronograph’s charm isn’t all in the breakfast-friendly functionality, though; there’s something about the look of them. They are clean and symmetrical but lots going on nonetheless.

YOUR SCALP IS SKIN TOO

If you have a dry, flaking scalp, you may suspect dandruff. But it could be a sign of dry scalp. Dandruff and dry scalp have the same main symptoms, which are falling flakes and an itchy scalp, but they are two different conditions. In dry scalp, the skin gets irritated and flakes off. With dandruff, the cause is too much oil on the scalp. That excess oil causes skin cells to build up and then shed. Knowing which of these conditions you have can help you get the right treatment and banish those flakes for good. Which is definitely every gentleman daydream. Below are some symptoms to take care of as well as ways to prevent dandruff from taking place: CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS You get dry scalp when your skin has too little moisture. The skin on your scalp becomes irritated and flakes off. If your scalp is dry, the skin on other parts of your body, like your arms and legs, could be dry, too.

scalp or dandruff is to apply a light moisturizer to your scalp before you go to bed. If the cause is dry scalp, the flakes should disappear once you shower the next morning. Some hair stylists can perform a scalp treatment that uses steam to deliver more moisture to your scalp.

Dry scalp can also be triggered by factors like these: cold/dry air, consequence of a product you apply to your scalp, like shampoo, styling gel, and hairspray, and aging.

For mild dandruff, wash your hair every day with a gentle shampoo to reduce the amount of oil on your scalp. If your dandruff is more severe or a regular shampoo doesn’t work, try a dandruff shampoo. Most dandruff shampoos contain medicine that kills the fungus on your scalp or removes flaky skin.

The skin cells on your scalp and body normally multiply when you need more of them. Then they die and shed off; when you have dandruff, skin cells on your scalp shed more quickly than usual. The main cause of dandruff is “seborrheic dermatitis,” a condition that turns the skin oily, red, and scaly. The white or yellow scales flake off, creating dandruff. You can get seborrheic dermatitis anywhere you have oil glands, including your eyebrows, groin, armpits, and along the sides of your nose. In babies it’s called cradle cap. Often, a fungus called malassezia triggers dandruff. This fungus normally lives on your scalp. Yet some people have too much of it, and it causes skin cells to multiply more quickly than usual. There are some factors that provoke “malassezia” which are commonly hormones imbalance and stress. If you have dry scalp, wash with a gentle shampoo and then use a moisturizing conditioner. One way to tell whether you have dry 12 | October 2018

HERE ARE SOME TIPS TO PREVENT DANDRUFF AND DRY SCALP: • If you have dandruff, wash your hair often with an antidandruff shampoo. Make sure to rinse out all the shampoo. • Avoid using hair products that contain harsh chemicals, like bleach and alcohol. These ingredients can dry out your scalp. Also avoid oily hair products that can build up on your scalp. • Spend a few minutes out in the sun every day. There’s some evidence that ultraviolet light exposure can help control dandruff. Yet you don’t want to get too much sun exposure because it can increase your risk for skin cancer. • Manage your stress with meditation, yoga, deep breathing, and other relaxation techniques.

OFFICE WEAR STYLING TIPS Working at an office can be sometimes stressing in many aspects and choosing the right attire could be on top of the list. The workplace had always been somewhere where you need to abide by a specific dress code that usually included a black suit and a tie. It is not the standard dress code in every company, but there are rules that you need to stick to when it comes to how you dress. The workplace is not the location where you can freely get lazy about choosing an outfit. It must have happened at some point in history, and the workplaces witnessed a disastrous decline in the fashion world and people fell into the easiness of pulling off a pair of baggy trousers and vague t-shirts, so thank goodness there was an end. However, the dress code is becoming more flexible nowadays; there are many workplaces where you are allowed to dress more casual than ever, but you still need to keep your professional appearance. Here are some easy tips that will help you style your office wear.

The first golden rule of a smart-looking man is the correct sizing. Nothing is more downgrading to the sense of men’s style than an ill-fitting clothing pieces. Don’t ever go for larger or smaller sizes; that would destroy the appearance of your outfit no matter how expensive or great your items are. Always go for that size that fits you perfectly and you Here is the simplest trick that can assist you in creating a new look for each day; always fill your wardrobe with basics. This way you can nail more than a few outfits with a limited number of items, for basics are so easy to mix and match with different ties’ colors and pants and create a whole new-looking outfit. With time, you’ll find yourself getting more creative with matching your items.

Looking for any easy and effortless business style? Well, sure everybody is, polo t-shirts are there to save the day. Pull them off with a plain blazer for a fabulous finish to your professional appearance. Some polos come with several button downs; you have the choice to either leave them open and button them up. However, for a business outfit, button them up to the neck. Denim pieces are not preferable in workplaces, but if you can get away with them at yours, you are actually one lucky man. A lot of men tend to think that denim jeans is not the best choice for a smart appearance; this can be partially true unless you succeeded in pairing your denim with right clothing pieces. For an easy smart look, pair your denim jeans with a plain white shirt and a tie along with a pair of loafers. P.S: always remember to stick with dark-colored denim jeans; they have a more business look than lighter ones. If denim jeans sound too risky for you to try it on, go for smart casual trousers that create a smart look. Stick with the ones in neutral colors; they are easier to mix and match with your top pieces. Besides, you shouldn’t go for bold colors with either your tops or bottoms, so make sure your trousers’ colors can be perfectly matched with colors like navy, brown, beige, and other neutral top colors.

Foot wear is another thing that can be a bit exhausting to pick up because, NO SNEAKERS. But, shoe classics are always the safest options; besides, they look so elegant when it comes to professional footwear. You can also go for loafers and leather shoes. It may be already summer; however, don’t be afraid to experiment with suede shoes and different colors. October 2018 | 15

SMART - RELATIONSHIPS

THE EGO MONSTER

BY: YASMINE SHAHIN

We all know that in a perfect world, we would never be ego-driven. Unfortunately, we have to admit that this is not a perfect world, so let’s get real. We are all ego-driven to some extent or another, even though we are all aware that nothing will kill a relationship -even the best of relationships- more quickly than ego. We sometimes fall into the trap and let our ego lead our lives until it destroys it. We get mixed up with the big difference between confidence and ego. We forget that Confidence is healthy but ego is destructive. Relying on the following famous expression, ego will not only kill your talent, it will kill you career, your relationships and your happiness, it can literally ruin your life. Let me share with you some of the real negative effects of having an Ego and how it can spoil your relationship and your own happiness.

• IT WILL STOP YOU FROM LISTENING: A person with high ego never listens to anyone. The minute you will stop listening is the time when you will let your pride or ego take over the conversation. You will think that you are already smart enough to even listen to other people. You will believe that you are always better than other people and feel you have nothing more to learn from them. As a result, when you close yourself and stop listening to other people, you are literally doomed because you will stop learning and stop growing. You will close the door for any love to come into your life and unintentionally you will be pushing everyone around you away. • IT WILL PUSH REAL GOOD PEOPLE AWAY FROM YOU: A huge ego is your worst enemy and always tends to attract the wrong people. People with ego want to live in a world, where people around lift them up, they dislike those who tear them down or challenge their ego or make others feel that they are better than them. Too much ego can be a conversation killer and can come in the way of succeeding in your career, your self-development and your relationships. • IT ONLY ADDS MORE STRESS: When you’re always trying to be above everyone else and take everything as a direct hit to your self-worth, you will not be sleeping well; you won’t have any peace, self serenity and content with your life which will leave you always frustrated and anxious. 16 | October 2018

‘‘

‘‘ Too Much Ego Will Kill Your Talent

• YOU WILL BECOME LESS UNDERSTANDING AND LESS EMPATHETIC: An overblown ego makes you believe the worst in people and get defensive most of the time. It also blinds you from seeing the bigger picture of life or giving the benefit of the doubt. Most people can’t relate to you or can’t even stand you as ego makes you less compassionate, since you always think that people are personally attacking you in a conversation, instead of trying to understand where they’re coming from. • IT MAKES YOU TOO CRITICAL: Too much ego makes you criticize every one and complain about everything because they’re not up to your standards. That kind of attitude will not make you enjoy anything in life because you will never be satisfied if you keep trying to point out what’s wrong with the world. • IT TURNS YOU TO A GREEDY PERSON: Because you always want more and you want to win bigger. It’s good to be ambitious but when you become greedy you can take away everything you’ve ever worked hard for and you will never appreciate what you have when you have it. • YOU ALWAYS FEEL SUPERIOR TO YOUR PARTNER: A relationship would never work this way but ego can make you deem your partner as weaker or more inferior person. And if this trait is part of your relationship, true love would be far from that relationship.

• YOU WILL NEVER SEE YOUR MISTAKES: Ego has a wicked way of making you perfect- not in your partner’s eyes, not in the world’s eyes but only in your eyes. If you see yourself as “Mr. Perfect” then you would never have a successful relationship, and ego would wickedly make you think you are perfect. If we want to be truly confident and happy, we really need to let go of the identification with the ego, letting go of pride and arrogance that comes along with the ego. We need to be able to accept ourselves as we are, and not looking forward trying to be somebody else that we are not, even if we “think” that we are not perfect.

So let us now agree to drop the “E” and let it

“GO”

SMART - PLANNING

FULL TIME EMPLOYEE

VS

BUSINESS . OWNER

BY SAMAR GAMIL

I hear alot of my friends and people I know having the same plan in mind when they reach a certain age which is ‘Open my own Business’; I’ve opened my own business a year ago and did some mistakes and I also learnt lots of other skills thus I wanted to share what I learnt as well as the mistakes I did with you maybe I might be of help to any of you: - THE CHARACTER EFFECT : Being a business owner is nearly the total antonym of being a full time employee; succeeding as a Business Owner requires focusing on different set of skills that one might have yet might not focus on much when he/she is a part of a company whether local or multinational.

- THE JUMP : The last day of your full time job is usually the day you jump into the unknown and start looking at life from a different prospective; it’s also the stage when your friends and parents might support you and believe in you as they usually do or might not so you will have a clear understanding of everyone around you.

LEADERSHIP skill is very much needed for this type of work as you will start caring about tiny essentials that you never noticed before like marketing your work, branding yourself, taking care of the office if any, website apart from the legal papers, mentoring/managing office manager if any and a lot of other tasks that as a business owner you will find yourself worrying about and wanting all to be prefect.

It’s pretty normal to feel hesitated and puzzled that you might think sometimes of returning back to your old life style and that this was the worst thing you ever had to do but tell you what this feeling will start decreasing the moment you focus on your work and setting clear targets to reach for your new career.

PLANNING your new business and Social Networking with current professionals in this field is among the known key factors of success for example. If you’re planning to open a training center or a tourism agency then you might as well follow the work of those in this business and maybe become friends with them too for the sake of building a better understanding of what it takes to be successful at that business.

- THE NEW LIFE STYLE : The most known trait of Business Owners describing their life styles is this quote ‘I will have the freedom to go to work whenever I want’ while the fact is the total opposite because the moment you are a business owner Insomnia, get ideas related to your work in the middle of the night, stay at the office a lot simply because it’s yours....etc.

18 | October 2018

- THE CASH COW CONCEPT : I borrowed this term from a friend of mine in the training business; the concept states that in order to run a Business it is recommended to sustain a certain amount of stable income called a Cash Cow (i.e. this can be an online job or any other passive income that can generate income and at the same time does not consume a huge amount of time) and the reason for this is to complete a circle of income generation and redirecting it to help develop your new business. Without enough cash and correct planning Private business might not succeed; being a business owner is tough and has a lot of challenges but it differs from one character to the other for example we started big me and my friend & business partner having our own office with an office manager then started to minimize as the office manager left and we worked other full time jobs just to secure the cash cow concept! All the luck to everyone planning to open a private business and hope I was of any help even if minimum.

SMART

- ANGER MANAGEMENT

CONSEQUENCES OF BOTTLING

ANGER UP

“Anger is an emotion which is characterized by antagonism toward someone or something you feel has deliberately wronged you,” says the American Psychological Association (APA) Anger is unavoidable; it is part of our lives and our relationships. When it comes to take place, we should take the responsibility and ensure that we do not hurt ourselves, our partners, and our relationships. How? Simply it’s how we express it and let it out. The best way to contain the anger and prevent any dramatic consequences is to never deny or ignore anger; it will not go anywhere. Acknowledge that you are angry; when you do it; you give yourself a better chance to clarify why you are angry, whom are you angry at, and you start to think proactively about the best action. When we acknowledge anger in the present, we prevent situations where we realize it later because we are obliged to deal with penalties. Many people believe that holding anger in is bad for the self, as it only builds and accumulates pressure to be expressed. In fact, sudden bursts of anger or prolonged anger are bad for you. A strong emotion that is accompanied by arousal of the nervous system, anger produces effects throughout the body. It eats away at your cardiovascular system, your gut and hijacks the nervous system, often obliterating the capacity for clear thinking. And it may even grow in an intense way. Anger doesn’t automatically dissipate by being unleashed. We rarely experience liberation. Venting it in words or action doesn’t make anger easier to manage; often it only increases the intensity 20 | October 2018

of the feeling. Anger often feeds on itself. Plus, by furthering aggression it often brings irreversible damage to those in the immediate vicinity. Anger is often one of the few emotions men consider it “acceptable” to display. But that doesn’t mean they respond well when someone else displays anger towards them. TAM IT Can such deeply-felt emotion be expressed positively?Well, the answer is yes; yet, it requires effort and practice to master the skills. The key factor is to recognize that expressing anger inappropriately hurts your relationship; therefore it is important to master it and express it in acceptable ways. DEAL WITH IT First, when we let anger grows and explodes it turns out to become a beast. It then becomes a two-edged sword, hurting the one holding it, as well as the one it is pointed at. As much as possible, allow the raw emotions to sink before you act. This might require you to withdraw or walk away, or use the age-old technique of counting backward, 10 to zero, to allow whatever you are feeling to sink in. The point is, don’t act in anger. Express yourself clearly; open up why you are angry. Yet, stay aware from “pointing fingers statements,” consider your tone of voice, or any violent act. All of these incidents do nothing but making the status worst and often lead to many unintended misunderstandings. Bottom line; just do your best to prevent anger from bottling up.

SMART - SUCCESS STORY

IN-DEPTH INTERVIEW WITH

PAUL ANTAKI THE MASTER OF ELEGANCE

“I have nothing to wear the sentence that most ladies repeat daily unconsciously, it is the one that rang a bell to Paul Antaki! Yes, this sentence was the sparke behind the fashion revoloution that took place in Egypt almost thirty years back. It is why we used to have Benetton, NafNaf, &Mexx. Nowadays we have, OR, Daniel Hechter, and MAX MARA. In a very warm and value-adding interview with Mr. Antaki, we were fortunate enough to meet a true gentleman and a leader when it comes to the fashion industry in Egypt. The humble, moderate, and down to earth personality excels at liaising between the vast experiences and absorbing the changes of the modern age with his distinctive critical and analytical eye to stay connected with all fashion-related news to determine his next move and investment.

1. DUE TO SOME ECONOMIC FACTORS; A GRAVE SEGMENT OPT OUT FOR LOCAL BRANDS; WHAT ARE THE TACTICS YOU IMPLEMENT TO AVOID CLASH OF THE BUSINESS? We are privileged that our business gained a hands-on experience of local manufacturer. There was a time in history where importation was not welcomed in Egypt; to franchise a brand in Egypt had to be under licensed, which means that the whole production cycle takes place in Egypt using our workforce and factories. As we were representing international reputable brands, we had no option but delivering a great quality that matches our company as well as the franchises. Another plus point that we have, is that we managed to create our own local brand “OR” that successfully competes with global brands because simply we got used to guarantee a high-end quality that is as equal as other brands and at an affordable price. 2. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE CONSUMERS’ APPETITE IN THE EGYPTIAN MARKET? It is possible that purchase power is affected. But conversely I believe our market share increased. Another worth noting fact is the great capacity of the Egyptian market; meaning that no matter how harsh the circumstances are; yet, a brand is striving all the way up to provide quality, it will definitely stand out no matter what. The key point is how you communicate and position the brand to your targeted customer.

October 2018 | 23

3. STARTING OUT WITH BENETTON FRANCHISE; AND NOW A MASSIVE EXPANSION OF VARIOUS SHOPS, WHAT BEST DESCRIBES YOUR JOURNEY? I consider Benetton as a major educational stage on how to produce, prior to Benetton; I had my own brand that I decided to let go of it in order to learn how to run a successful fashion business with an international punch. I think if I kept myself locked in the shell of my business I wouldn’t be able to do or achieve what I have done so far. I learned how to plan for the production, go-to market strategies, and the best way to present and display a fashion collection. I consider Benetton as not only a learning school, it is the first brand to introduce the idea of franchise, which gave me the chance afterward to approach and get the deal done with other brands such as NafNaf and Mexx. If you don’t work with an international brand and get involved in the production cycle, you will never learn. If your role is limited to only being an importer all you get to see is the front-desk, thus, you miss a huge learning opportunity. 4. AFTER ACCOMPLISHING ALMOST 30 YEARS IN THE EGYPTIAN MARKET; WHERE THE COMPANY MANAGED TO INTRODUCE THE MINDSET OF INTERNATIONAL BRANDS PENETRATING IN HERE, WHAT ARE THE MAIN FACTORS THAT ENSURED THESE BRANDS’ SUCCESS AND CONTINUITY? The main reason to maintain the sustainability of a brand is crafting the right foundation for the business. The structure of the business and its practices should not change; they are the same all over the world. The other factor to the business success and continuity is to have a helicopter view on the industry as a whole. You have to update yourself with all the new trends and styles by keeping track of this industry’s role models globally. To be fully aware about all tiny details that would leave an impact on the quality of the products a brand produces; what would give a brand or a fashion designer the inspiration but attending the global exhibitions to collect more insights about the targeted customers.

‘‘

DAYDREAM NOT ONLY DREAM! WHEN YOU DAYDREAM, YOU INDUCE IT IN YOUR MIND AND IT TRANSLATES INTO A VISION

‘‘

24 | October 2018

‘‘

THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF INTELLIGENCE; ONE THAT IS BY NATURE AND THE OTHER IS BY EXPERIENCE. REGARDLESS OF WHAT IS YOUR IQ LEVEL; WHAT REALLY DISTINGUISHES YOU IS HOW YOU WORK ON DEVELOPING YOURSELF AND BUILDING ON LIFE’S EXPERIENCES

‘‘

5. PAUL ANTAKI, YOU DEMONSTRATED A HEAVY INTEREST WHEN IT COMES TO THE FASHION INDUSTRY, TALK TO US ABOUT THE “EGYPTIAN FASHION AND DESIGN COUNCIL” INITIATIVE. EFDC is a non-profit organization, we are a group of co-founders including: Marie Louis, Fatma Ghali, Abdel Malek Shamsy, Suzan Thabet. The purpose of the EFDC is to create a hub for all Egyptian talents. Today we have an augmenting number of new designers that show up every other day. Junior designers need coaching and mentoring to ensure they are on the correct path. At the same time, the fashion industry in Egypt faces a lot of challenges; either it is accessory, imported material, workforce, etc. The panel of founders works hand in hand to bridge the gap between these talents and the governmental administration. We aim to return Egypt back to the universal fashion map. We aspire to host a Fashion Week in Egypt, where at least half of the show is

prepared by Egyptian designers. In order to reach such goal, there must be factories and sponsors incorporating with us to make it happen. Egypt is full of talents; we just need filter and support in order to show them off proudly. 6. DEFINE SUCCESS FROM YOUR OWN PERSPECTIVE? Success has its unique taste, and it is not measured by money; when you have the satisfaction to see your daydream a reality in front of you, that’s the optimum success. One must have a long-term vision and at the same time you must keep track of the milestones that allow you to reach the vision. 7. WHAT DOES THE WORD AMBITION MEANS TO YOU? Ambition for me, it is when you want something and you persevere, you don’t give up, if you give up, then you are not ambitious enough and you don’t believe in

yourself. Because being ambitious is equal to believing in yourself, and being sure that you will get there. Remember, if you let down or give up in the middle of the journey, there must be something wrong. 8. DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN 3 MAJOR KEYWORD. Humility, if you really want to get there you have to know that you must be humble, and you have to accept and deal with the fact that there are other people who are much better than you otherwise; you will never learn. Humility according to me is the foundation to advance and succeed in life. The second keyword would be passion; because loving what you do fuels you up with the needed energy. Energy motivates you to work and give more to reach the desired state you want to reach. Hard Work, it comes from your own energy and to always keep yourself in shape to keep going and maintain your energy in whatever you do with your life. October 2018 | 25

FINIS NEPTUNE

In almost every sport, music can be a rather powerful motivation to run or cycle that extra mile but never to swim that extra lap, until now. Like Sportiiiis, the Finis Neptune is secured onto the user’s eyewear, in this case, swimming goggles. This device uses bone conduction audio to relay music to the user’s ears, without the need for ear buds. The device also makes music louder and clearer when submerged underwater. It also comes with a built-in 4GB of storage space, a rechargeable battery that lasts 8 hours and an OLED screen with music controls.

SPORTIIIIS

TRACE

FITBIT ARIA

Most fitness trackers are for moderate sports enthusiasts, those who run or jog to stay fit but most of the trackers that they use may not be suitable for extreme sports junkies. The latter would need Trace, an advanced tracker for action sports like surfing, skateboarding and snowboarding. Trace is built for action sports and meant to be mounted on the board from where it would log in the tricks you’ve landed, your speed, maximum height and sync all of the data with a smartphone app. The app is also social, allowing one to see what fellow junkies are up to with their own stunts.

Into cycling? Checking on your stats while you cycle is not only a hassle but may also be dangerous. Track your heart rate safely and accurately with Sportiiiis. The simple Head-Up Display (HUD) has 6 LED to indicate your heart rate. Cyclists can mount it on their sunglasses and receive their stats via voice prompts which relay your speed, heart rate, cadence and power. Its company does sell its own line of monitors that work together with, Sportiiiis but it is also compatible with products from other manufacturers.

Here’s a high tech weighing scale ideal for weight watchers. It tells you more than just what you weigh. The Fitbit Aria can track the body fat percentage and Body Mass Index (BMI) of up to 8 users, and then transfer the data wirelessly to your computer for your progress management. The data it collects is supported and works well together with many other apps. It’ll sync to your smartphone to notify you when you have achieved a fitness goal. Earn achievement badges to share with your friends.

AMIIGO FITNESS BRACELET MISFIT SHINE

It’s a bracelet, a pendant, and can also fit in your pocket. The Misfit Shine is an activity tracker that lets you track your movements and activities to help you achieve goals set on your iOS device. Due to its design you can strap it on an arm and dive in for a lap with no worries – it is waterproof! Check in on your progress by just tapping the LED-lit face. It also doubles as a watch and works on coin batteries which can last for months at a time.

Amiigo tries to separate itself from the fitness bracelet competition by having the ability to track specific workouts that you perform. It’s a 2-in-1 device, one worn on your wrist and the other on your shoe to capture your upper and lower body movements. The two-piece gadget can differentiate your movements: cycle, swim, walk, hike, play basketball, football, golf, and water sports. It even works with weights and cardio equipment. It syncs over Bluetooth and is open source so 3rd party developers can create apps to work with it.

FITNESS - BULLETINS

NEVER SKIP LEG DAY There is no doubt that a heavily weight machine can build strong and powerful legs, but there are several exercises that could also attain great results and help you save some time and cash! SINGLE-LEG TOUCHDOWNS

DEADLIFTS

Stand balanced on one leg with firm posture and tighten your torso. This will be your starting position. Gradually bend down at the hip, knee, and ankle, reaching down to the outside of your standing leg’s foot with the opposite hand. Slowly return to starting position, keeping your torso tight. You should feel constant tension on your leg muscles. Repeat. If you are unable to reach all the way down to your toe without falling over, try reaching to mid-shin instead and challenge yourself to reach lower level.

Stand holding a dumbbell in each hand with arms and legs shoulder width apart, hanging straight down, and knees slightly bent. Keep your chest high throughout the workout. Inhale as you tighten your torso and bend forward from the hips, while pushing your rear-end back and keeping your shoulder blades retracted and chin tucked. Bend down in a squat form to mid-shin and pause for a second. You should feel a stretch in your hamstrings. Exhale as you return to starting position. Repeat.

P.S: It is important to go slow to avoid muscle strain or injury. Also keep your back arched throughout the exercise. STABILITY BALL DRAW-INS Lie on your back with your heels and the bottom halves of your calves on a ball, toes pointing toward the ceiling. Keep your arms straight out to your sides, palms on floor. Squeeze your gluteus and lift your hips up toward the ceiling so your body forms a straight line from chest to ankles. Keeping a tight torso, exhale while bringing the ball in toward your body as far as you can by bending your knees, and then slowly return to starting position as you inhale. Repeat. P.S: Do not let your hips sink or hike up at all during this exercise. BALANCE LUNGES Stand with legs about shoulder-width apart, hands on hips. Take a big step forward and lower your hips toward the floor until both knees are at 90-degree angles. This is your starting position. Now exhale as you forcefully push back of your front leg and lift your knee by flexing your hip to 90 degrees, without allowing your foot to touch the ground. Balance for few seconds, and then return to the lunge position, and repeat.

36 | October 2018

ONE-LEG WALL SQUATS Stand with your feet about shoulder-width apart, then position yourself against a stability ball, where your back is centered on the ball. Lift one leg up slightly of the ground and keep your foot slightly out in front of your knee. Place your hands on your hips. This is your starting position. Keeping your chest up, slowly bend the knee of your supporting leg as comfortably as you can (as long as your thighs are only parallel to the floor and now lower). Your gluteus should be rolling under the ball toward the wall. To return to the starting position, exhale as you squeeze your gluteus, pressing back against the ball. P.S: Keep your hips at a 90-degree angle as you lower and return to starting position.

FITNESS

- MINDFIT

Exercise Saves Your Brain as You Age The brain is often described as being “like a muscle”. It’s a comparison that props up the brain training industry and keeps school children hunched over desks. We judge literacy and numeracy exercises as more beneficial for your brain than running, playing and learning on the move. But the brain-as-muscle analogy doesn’t quite work. To build up your biceps you can’t avoid flexing them. When it comes to your brain, an oblique approach can be surprisingly effective. In particular, working your body’s muscles can actually benefit your grey matter. A wave of studies exploring the unexpected links between mental and bodily fitness is emerging from labs. This research might give you the impetus to get more active. It can also help you choose the best ways to prepare physically for mental challenges such as exams, interviews and creative projects. BOOST YOUR MEMORY The part of the brain that responds strongly to aerobic exercise is the hippocampus. Well-controlled experiments in children, adults and the elderly show that this brain structure grows as people get fitter. Since the hippocampus is at the core of the brain’s learning and memory systems, this finding partly explains the memory-boosting effects of improved cardiovascular fitness. So exercise while you revise. Don’t push it too hard, though: intense workouts can raise your stress levels, which can scupper your memory circuits. Don’t let the fact that its not all plain sailing hold you back. Use these realisms to fuel your motivation. Can it be done? Yes of course it can! The mind is the most important muscle you need to flex in this process, once you conquer one challenging task the next one seems considerably easier. 38 | October 2018

Action is the precursor to motivation, doing these hard things even when you don’t feel like doing them will yield results, once you see the results this will reinforce the actions and make motivation inevitable. Now you understand what´s involved: be ready - let’s do this! IMPROVE YOUR CONCENTRATION Besides making memories stickier, exercise can help you focus and stay on task. The best scientific evidence comes from testing school children, but the same most likely applies to us all. The children, of course, got fitter. Less predictably, their executive control improved. They became more adept at ignoring distractions, multitasking, and holding and manipulating information in their minds. Just 10 minutes of playful coordination skills, like bouncing two balls at the same time,

improved the attention of a large group of German teenagers. IMPROVE YOUR MENTAL HEALTH Love it or hate it, bouts of physical activity can have potent effects on your mood. The runner’s high – that feeling of elation that follows intense exercise – is real. It may not be due to an “endorphin rush”, though. Levels of the body’s homemade opiate do rise in the bloodstream, but it’s not clear how much endorphin actually gets into the brain. Instead, recent evidence points to a pleasurable and pain-killing firing of the endocannabinoid system: the psychoactive receptor of cannabis. ENHANCE YOUR CREATIVITY Walking gives wings to the imagination. Walking, even on a treadmill bolsters divergent thinking: the free-roaming, idea-generating component of creative thought. It didn’t help convergent thinking, though. So if you’re struggling to home in on a single solution, an idle stroll may not be what you need. SLOWING COGNITIVE DECLINE The evidence that staying physically fit keeps your brain healthy into old age is especially compelling. Most concrete is the link between aerobic fitness and cognitive preservation. Workouts needn’t be extreme either: 30-45 minutes of brisk walking, three times a week, can help fend off the mental wear and tear and delay the onset of dementia. It pays to get used to regular exercise early, though. The protective effects are clearest before the cognitive signs of old age kick in. Nor is it all about your heart and lungs. Twice weekly sessions of weightlifting can have a visible neurological impact. Dancing may also be restorative for ageing brains. Just an hour of dance a week, for six months, did little for elderly participants’ aerobic capacity, but the physical and social stimulation bolstered their cognitive wellbeing. Researchers are still teasing out the critical factors that make exercise such a potent brain tonic. Prime suspects include increased blood flow to the brain, surges of growth hormones and expansion of the brain’s network of blood vessels. It’s also possible that exercise stimulates the birth of new neurons. Until recently, few believed this could happen in adult human brains.

FITNESS - WORKOUT

THE STORY OF TWO TALES

CARDIO VERUS WEIGHT LIFTING BY: VICTORIA HAIG

Once, not so long ago in Cairo, if you asked a trainer how to lose weight they would reply: cardio, cardio, and cardio. Then strength training muscled its way into to the equation as the must do for boosting your metabolism and losing weight in your sleep, prompting the omnipresent rise of #TeamNoCardio. So, what constitutes cardiovascular activities? Cardio is long, slow repetitive movement patterns such as jogging, cycling, or rowing. 40 | October 2018

Whereas strength training is the sport or activity of lifting barbells or other heavy weights, this type of physical exercise specializes in the use of resistance to induce muscular contraction which builds the strength. Today there is a cultural shift toward an emphasis on male and female muscularity, yes female too, #strongnotskinny transcends celebrity culture, beauty contests and even todays supermodels. Abs are everywhere. Today the subject is hotly debated, which is in

fact better for weight loss: strength training or resistance training (weight lighting to you and me). Strength training is currently considered more effective for fat loss than traditional cardio methods. Although there isn’t a definitive answer let’s examine the advantages and disadvantages of both cardio and weightlifting and get to the crux of the issue. In order to create context lets clarify what people mean when they say they want to

THE ADVANTAGES OF CARDIO: • While it has burns calories during the session that effect drops of shortly after you finish your session.

DISADVANTAGES OF WEIGHT LIFTING • There is a lot of bad information on the market related to weight lifting, between the bro science and under qualified Instagram aficionados there is a plethora of misinformation resulting in misguided and/or poor training methods and poor results.

• The beauty of cardio is that it’s easy to implement and take up, and there are a variety of fun and inclusive activities that you can embrace.

• Weightlifting has a higher barrier to recovery too (for example a four-hour hike is great, but it would be counterproductive to pump weights for the same time.

• It’s a suitable low intensity option, an activity such as walking is highly practical and there is little need for rest.

• Weightlifting also has a lower calorific burn compared to cardio (however please note this minute by minute not over time).

THE DISADVANTAGES OF CARDIO: • The most obvious drawback is that the majority of people will use jogging as their default cardio and this commonly causes injuries and strains.

• Can increase hunger significantly, so discipline with diet becomes a factor in success

So, bearing this in mind let´s see how cardio vs weightlifting measures up.

• In addition to the physical implications cardio can have a negative hormonal impact, especially for people with high cortisol levels (a sign of tiredness and/or stress). • Finally, aesthetically it is somewhat difficult to create a symmetrical physique though cardio alone. READER TIP: HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) is a form of cardiovascular training that not only delvers all the benefits of traditional cardio but also has a greater afterburn that can last days, some research has even shown it may promote an anabolic response as well. For ideas on how to HIIT you can learn from the best in the business @ trainlikea.wolf (online) or attend a session with Befit coach @shamshoom (New Cairo).

lose weight – people’s true goal is to shed fat. Rarely would someone aim to lose lean muscle mass that would slow their metabolic rate, making them less athletic and less aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Therefore, the primary goal of weight loss is actually fat loss. Maintaining precious muscle mass should be equally, if not more important, than the goal of fat loss, and as such any training regime you embark on should take this into consideration.

ADVANTAGES OF WEIGHT TRAINING: • The primary advantage is: it´s the fastest, most efficient way to increase muscle mass. • Increased muscle mass causes a spike in metabolism meaning you reap the rewards of the after burn, this is the process whereby you burn calories long after the exercise is over.

So, to wrap up this debate, which would I chose? Weight training, simply because it has more pros, including many of the benefits offered by cardio, the advantages of cardio can be better be achieved by simply reducing caloric intake. That said the two are not mutually exclusive you can do both and your focus should be tied to your goal. If your goal is a triathlon obviously cardio will take precedence, however if your goal is a six pack then weight lifting would be the best option. A combination irrespective of your goal will be the best outcome. Often when clients ask me for a fat loss program I suggest first a good strength training program with some complimentary steady state cardio followed for some time then a hybrid training phase that includes high intensity resistance training and cardio in the same workout. The client can rotate between these options until they have their desired physique. READER TIP: If you don’t know how to structure your program you can contact @assem_effat at The Gym (New Cairo) or any of the very capable trainers @la7gym (Giza) or @vibes_wellbeing (Zamalek).

• The barrier to entry is pretty low. Very unfit people can start, and it offers the opportunity to grow muscle and burn fat simultaneously. October 2018 | 41

BODY & HEALTH - BONE

IMPACT OF NUTRITION ON YOUR BONES’ HEALTH BY: ALAA BASYOUNI Building stronger bones is a journey that starts before we are even born. Bone health is the result of bone mass, bone architecture, and body mechanics—all of which are supported by nutrition throughout the human life cycle. Various nutrients play a role in bone health. Some nutrients have scientifically proven benefits, others may have some benefits, but there is no research to back that up. With some exceptions, a balanced diet provides all the required nutrients for most people, eliminating the need to take most supplements. Calcium, vitamin D and Magnesium are the key bone health nutrients that require special attention to ensure that you meet your daily requirements.

CALCIUM,

VITAMIN K, ZINC, AND MANGANESE

is a mineral found abundantly in our diet. If you do not get enough calcium through your food or supplements, your body will take the calcium it needs from your bones, which in turn weaken your bones.

are of less importance than the above mentioned elements, yet they have proven benefits to maintain bone health.

Best known sources of Calcium are: • Dairy products as milk, cheese, and yoghurt. • Fortified drinks as orange juice, soy milk, and almond milk. • Sardines and canned salmon. • Vegetables as broccoli and okra. • Seeds as sesame seeds and chia seeds. VITAMIN D, is the sunlight vitamin which is necessary for calcium to be absorbed from our gut. There is a worldwide concern about vitamin D deficiency. It is highly recommended to test for vitamin D deficiency and those with levels below normal, will probably need supplements as the dietary intake of vitamin D is not enough to normalize its levels in the blood. Best known sources of vitamin D are: • Fatty fish as salmon, sardines, and mackerel. • Egg yolks. • Fortified dairy products and cereals. • Beef liver • Butter MAGNESIUM, is another important mineral needed in small amounts to properly regulate the levels of calcium and vitamin D in our bodies. Best known sources of Magnesium are: • Green vegetables as spinach. • Seeds as sesame seeds and chia seeds. • Nuts. • Whole grain baked goods and cereals. • Avocado.

VITAMIN K, is mainly needed to prevent bleeding, additionally it acts as the clue the sticks calcium to our bones. Low blood levels of vitamin K are associated with lower bone density and possibly increased risk of fractures. Best known sources of vitamin K are: • Green vegetables as spinach, okra, and broccoli. • Green tea. • Fermented foods as old cheese. ZINC, is a mineral that helps with boosting immunity and recycling worn-out bone proteins. It assists bone healing and aids with the formation of new bone building elements. Best known sources of Zinc are: • Shellfish as oysters. • Beef meat. • Whole grains baked goods and cereals. • Yoghurt. • Beef and chicken liver. MANGANESE, is another trace mineral needed in very small amounts. It has a special role in the formation of bone cartilages for healthier joints and it helps with strengthening of our bones. Best known sources of Manganese are: • Whole grains baked goods, cereals, and brown rice. • Green vegetables.

Eating right alone is not enough to ensure bone health. Various studies have shown that maintaining healthy weight for the right age and height is one of the main factors for healthy bones. Being over weight causes extra stress on your bones and joints, while being under weight is usually associated with increased bone fragility. The bottom-line is, find the right weight for your age and height, and make it your goal to stay within that weight range. Moreover, physical activity is key to bone health, and the suggestion is to combine a program of weight-lifting activity, simply to carry the weight of your own skeleton, such as walking; strength training to improve the muscles that support your skeleton; and exercises to improve your balance to prevent falls. Our bones become more fragile with aging, but it is never too late to start protecting your bones. We reach the peak of our bone density in early to mid-thirties. Do invest in eating right and exercising regularly as these are the only 2 sure ways to protect your bones and delay the inevitable bone damage that occurs with age.

The journey begins from the welcoming staff, who walk you through to your preferred seating slot. High tables are mainly for Teppanyaki people, so they can witness the live food preparation. The team of workers guide your food choices according to your food preferences and favorite ingredients for all presented plates.

The captivating thing about Shogun sushi is how soft and light each piece -on a side note; it is worth mentioning that we were all having the wrong kind of teriyaki sauce. Obsessed fans are very picky and keen about their options for the right place to enjoy their sushi; and their decision has a certain criteria. One of the major is the after taste. It is guaranteed that it will make you order more to indulge in. And don’t worry you won’t die starving for your order to be served, the wait time for the order is a fair duration.

Another aspect that definitely has a hand to improve your appetite at Shogun is its interior design that mainly focuses of deep and warm colors along with the wooden style that manages to formulate a brilliant ambiance. Well, it should goes without saying that all presented plates at Shogun are fresh, neat, delicious, and so much delightful. It is truly an unmatched culinary experience that is worth trying and definitely repeating over and over.

Another aspect you may be looking for in your Japanese dinning experience may be the mood itself; live cooking and sharing some live stories while the meal is getting prepped. Some fire augmenting whenever the chef adds some salt or oil… Yes; it’s Teppanyaki Time. If you have never tried Teppanyaki before, let us introduce you to what it really is. It is a speciality of Japanese cuisine that is dependent on the use of an iron griddle to cook food -teppanyaki is derived from “teppan”, which means iron plate, and “yaki”, which means grilled, broiled, or pan-fried. In short, the food was simply delicious and so was the ambiance! In this regard, we decided to share with you more about Shogun itself. The moment you step into the restaurant you will be walking on a mini bridge with a totally different interior than the outer world of the hotel. We believe the entrance is intended to help guests disconnect and shift their minds on the present moment to enjoy some mindful eating and live some happy moments away from everyday’s distractions and busyness.

BODY & HEALTH - NUTRITION

SIMPLE VS COMPLEX CARBS PARADOX High carb foods are defined as simple or complex based on their chemical structure. The simple carbs speed the digestion and absorption of food, while the complex carbs slower the digestion and absorption process. The faster the process, the more it spikes the blood insulin levels. Foods rich in simple carbs increase the risk of diabetes and heart disease, while foods high in complex carbs can provide you with energy immediately and optimum brain function. EXAMPLES FOR SIMPLE AND COMPLEX CARBS: SIMPLE CARBS: Highly processed junk usually triggers a large spike in blood sugar, lacks nutritional value, and doesn’t necessarily curb hunger. Simple carbs are found in pizza, chocolates, refined sugar, candies, and cereals. COMPLEX CARBs: These are also called starches. Starches include grain products, such as bread, crackers, pasta, vegetables, grains, cooked dry beans, peas, and rice. They are unprocessed, high in fiber as well as other important nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. Sugar: It is the simplest form of carbohydrates. Sugar exists in fruits, vegetables, milk, and milk products. Sugars are found in fruit sugar (fructose), table sugar (sucrose), and milk sugar (lactose).

CONCLUSION: The types of carbs you will want to avoid are simple carbs, refined grains, and sugars. Instead, include complex carbohydrates more into your diet as they provide grounding effect to the body by reducing stress, increasing brain function, filling you with healthy fibers, rewarding you with good sleep, and facilitating digestion. The Glycemic Index: High GI vs Low GI The glycemic index classifies carbs based on how quickly and how high they raise blood sugar levels when compared to pure glucose (sugar). The glycemic index maintains steady blood glucose levels. • A carbohydrate with a high glycemic index (high GI) breaks down quickly during digestion and releases glucose into the blood fast. Examples of foods with a high GI rating include white bread, white rice, corn flakes, crackers, and most sugary and/or highly processed snack foods. High glycemic foods are generally bad for your health.

46 | October 2018

• A carbohydrate with a low glycemic index (low GI) breaks down more slowly causing a slower release of glucose into the blood. Examples of foods with a low GI rating include most fruits, vegetables, and beans. Low glycemic foods are generally nutritious and healthful. Conclusion: • The daily carb intake should come from lower glycemic, higher fiber, and nutrientrich complex sources. • Simple, processed, refined, higher glycemic sources should be eliminated. HOW MANY CARBOHYDRATES DO YOU NEED? The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends that “carbohydrates make up 45 to 65 percent of your total daily calories,” So, if you get 2,000 calories a day, between 900 and 1,300 calories should be from healthy sources of carbohydrates.

BENEFITS OF CARBOHYDRATES: Provide Energy Sugars and starches are broken down into simple sugars during digestion. They’re then absorbed into your blood, known as blood sugar (blood glucose). The glucose enters your body’s cells with the assistance of insulin. Your body uses glucose to fuel it with energy for your activities. Extra glucose is either stored in your liver, muscles, and other cells or is converted to fat.

Fiber-Rich Fruits and Vegetables: Whole fresh, frozen, and canned fruits and vegetables without added sugar. They’re better than fruit juices and dried fruits.

Prevent Disease Fiber may protect against obesity and type 2 diabetes. Fiber is also essential for optimal digestive health.

Low-Fat Dairy Products: Milk, cheese, yogurt, and other dairy products are good sources of calcium and protein, plus many other vitamins and minerals.

Control Weight Eating lots of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can control your weight and make you feel fuller, because of their fiber content. Common Sources Rich in Carbohydrates.

Beans and Legumes: Legumes, which include beans, peas, and lentils, are low in fat, have no cholesterol, rich in protein, and high in potassium, iron, and magnesium. They also have beneficial fats and soluble and insoluble fibers.

Whole Grains: Whole grains are better sources of fiber and other nutrients, such as selenium, potassium, and magnesium, than refined grains.

THE POTENTIAL PRINCIPLE: A PROVEN SYSTEM FOR CLOSING THE GAP BETWEEN HOW GOOD YOU ARE AND HOW GOOD YOU COULD BE

MOVIE MISSION IMPOSSIBLE FALLOUT

In an era of sloppy and forgettable action flicks on the one hand and overly serious “gritty” franchises on the other, the Mission: Impossible movies strike a pleasing balance between memorable action sequences and smaller-scale character intrigue. They’re whatever the opposite of “self-important” is. And of course, like all the other movies in the series, a new Mission: Impossible entry brings another opportunity to see what Tom Cruise will put himself through for our viewing pleasure. The sixth installment, Mission: Impossible — Fallout brings all that to the table once again, and it just may be the best blockbuster of the summer. Suitably goofy, with the requisite masks and high-stakes stunts that mark the series, Fallout also pins its story on a lightly considered version of the alwaysrelevant trolley problem: Is it better to save one person from destruction at the cost of many other lives, or to choose to destroy one person to save the lives of many? 50 | October 2018
