EDITOR’S NOTE IT IS BOTH RIGHT AND A RIGHT TO GO WRONG
H
ow many times we tend to fall in the trap of not forgiving ourselves for mistakes we made? It is understandable that it varies from a person to another, of course. However; what remains constant is the guilt feelings that we are opposed to every time we figure out that we made some human error.
It is normal and healthy to re-consider what we have done wrong, and take the appropriate corrective action if there’s any room for it of course. If there’s no room for this, there should be no room too for self-blaming and guilt. Because simply we are all human, so yes we can go wrong sometimes, and it is okay! It is needless to be self-sabotaging ourselves. We learn from our mistakes, only arrogant people don’t. The main purpose here is learning the lesson. And what is important equally, is to be able to handle the consequences of our decisions, the good and bad ones. Good decisions make us happy and proud with that feeling of “YES, I’M RIGHT.” Bad decisions or mistakes let us down and disappointed because how come we couldn’t value the situation correctly. The best way to get out of the loop, it to admit we went wrong, yet in a different mindset, like: “Yes, I went all the way wrong, but it is okay to go wrong, and it is my right to be sometimes wrong.” That is how we learn at the end, from bad decisions and experiences as well as good ones. One a side note, one of the things that made me capable to manage this proactive change in my life –still needs improvement- is acquiring the saying “NO” skill, and worth noting that it is not the matter of just spelling the word out, but actually not feeling guilty afterwards. Keep up the good spirit.

Unless the workout space is as near as crossing the street, or downstairs the same building, you will make up your mind everytime you tend to decide because simply it is the traffic! We suggest that may be a nice investment in a capsule workout wardrobe that is practical would ease the decision. So, heading to the gym anytime soon?

SKIN CARE
CHECKLIST FOR A WINTER KICK OFF Skin is the body’s protective layer. It’s sculptured to keep out the reach of pollution, allergens, irritants, besides another major role that is to lock water and hydration in. We are all aware that winter lowers the temperatures and humidity levels in our bodies, combined with central heating, compromise the skin, changing the delicate balance of water, fat and protein that make up this barrier. This paradox translates into dryness, redness, sensitivity, irritation, in addition to a crippling case of seasonal affective disorder “SAD”. In short, skin is the armor shield, and harsh weather puts chinks in it. But there are steps you can take to bolster your defenses, like following this regimen to prevent winter’s outrage. SAVE THE FACE: Aside from being a sure-fire way to shock your body into wakefulness in the morning, the second round of washing before bed helps clear the skin of oil, pollutants and any traces of product that might otherwise transfer onto your pillow, and back onto your face each night. Men especially produce a lot of oil, or sebum, on account of their testosterone levels. If left to well up, excess oil clogs pores, causing them to appear larger and leading to shininess and spots. Of course, using the wrong product is just as bad as using no product at all, especially in winter when oily skin types get oilier and dry skin gets drier. WIN THE COLD WAR: Opt for hydrating solutions rather than a bog-standard face wash. As temperatures drop, so does your skin’s ability to retain hydration, which means the face wash you used all summer is not expected to deliver the same results in winter. Look for alcohol- and soap-free formulations packed with antioxidants and skin-saving ingredients like vitamin E. DON’T LEAVE YOURSELF EXPOSED TO THE ELEMENTS: It might seem like a hassle, but a gentle scrub can help clear the skin of dead cells that clog up pores, cause blackheads and make your complexion appear dull and uneven. Exfoliation is especially important for men over the age of 25. That’s when the skin naturally sloughs off dead cells slows down. 14 | November 2018
TONE UP FOR WINTER: Not something you do with a dumbbell, but an important – and often overlooked – step in a solid winter-beating skincare routine. Toning might have a feminine connotation to it, but it’s just what some marketing campaigns convinced us with. Toning helps to de-grease the skin and remove old cells; which proves that it is not female oriented only. Look for a toner that includes salicylic acid, which helps to absorb excess oil as it surfaces, keeping your complexion clear. WEAR PROTECTION: “Sunscreen isn’t just for holidays, it’s for 365 days a year” Sunblock is probably something we’re used to bulk-buying and applying during the summer season. Yet, a sunscreen is not just for when you’re jetting off for a cool vacation in a sunny spot. Surely, our skin get higher burning chances when lying in front of the beach; however, the sun is still all over us the whole year. It is also worth noting that UV rays exposure is a root cause to deep lines, wrinkles and dark spots, but exposure to the sun can further tamper with the skin’s barrier BONUS TIP: Nothing beats the power of maintaining the proper water intake. All of the previous mentioned highlights are just nonsense if you don’t drink the sufficient amount of water. Hydration comes from water, fresh juices, vegetables, and fruits. The beauty of our skin starts from within, from what we feed ourselves with. Remember, “We are what we eat.”

IN STYLE - WATCHES
THROWBACK TO SMART WATCHES EVOLUTION Watches are essential for gentlemen, it adds a lot to the outfit and overall look. Despite what is your preferred fashion style, it remains an important piece. Remember when the top trend in watches used to be displaying the date. Apparently, that was the start point of watches’ industry renovation. Watches, are no longer limited to being just a timepiece; it evolved and has become a digital item too that supports your day to day operations. Smart watches in a nutshell, are portable devices designed to be worn on the wrist, typically like any watch. Yet; it includes more of the smartphone features; such as touch screens and apps. It is a watch that has an equal value of wearing a mini computer. Depends on your phone brand, you will choose the watch, in order to get both synced together. Consequently, you can have a look on your watch not only to know what time it is, but to check the email notification, use GPS, or answer an incoming call too. 16 | November 2018
It is interesting to mention that first smartwatch attempt in history was in 1972 by the “Hamilton Watch Company and Electro/Data Inc. A digital watch at that time was that users had to press a button in order to see the time. Back in 1994, Timex Datalink co-developed with Microsoft the first wireless smartwatch where you can download data from the computer. That was done through a sensor embedded in the watch that the computer detects to secure the transfer.
The decision to purchase a smart watch must be taken wisely, not only because it costs a good bunch of money, but you really need to make sure if it is going to be beneficial for you. If you are the kind of a man who updates the mobile calendar with all business and personal appointments, checks the email frequently from your smartphone, uses GPS to navigate through the roads and identify traffic jam spots every day at any time. It might be useful for you since your phone runs out of charge frequently. However, it suits you perfectly if you are into fitness as part of your daily routine, in a way that you use the fitness apps to keep record of your workout through the heart-rate monitor, water resistance, and motion sensors. If you are the man who manages all of the above, a smart watch is definitely your thing. A Smart watch is one of the major outcomes of the digitized era that we live in nowadays where every device gets connected via the cloudconcept.
PULSAR WATCH
Samsung initiated the smartwatch that makes calls back in 1999. The watch had integrated speaker and microphone where the call was capable to last for 90 minutes.
SAMSUNG
Fossil released the Wrist PDA smartwatch during the early 2000s, at that time fossil managed to introduce a revolutionary timepiece. The watch included virtual keyboard, touch screen, infrared port, it was even capable of exchanging data with computers. FOSSIL WRIST PDA
Probably Fossil at that time invented something the market was not educated enough to hospitalize. Currently, it is Apple and Samsung that are leading the market when it comes to smartwatches. This is definitely due to the high competition and market share for the devices. SAMSUNG GEAR FIT2 SMART WATCH

SMART - PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
WAYS TO COPE WITH THE WORKPLACE STRESS
We live the experience of work stress on daily basis; some more than others, may be but at the end, it is every worker story in a nutshell. Unfortunately, It is something that we have to live with and get used to, it is something that we all need to be aware of. Knowing the most common causes of work related stress can help us take steps to prevent it and look after our mental health and wellbeing. There are many definitions of stress, what one person finds stressful, another might find motivational. As humans, we all react differently to different situations. Knowing what stress is, can be a starting point for us to know when we are experiencing it and how we can tackle it. Firstly, stress is a negative feeling and can be associated with physical symptoms. These symptoms may include shortness of breath, increased heartbeat, tummy issues, raised blood pressure and sweaty palms. Over time, these physical issues can worsen and turn into serious health problems. It’s important to recognize the common causes of stress at work so that you can take steps to reduce stress levels where possible. Workplace stress can be caused by a number of factors from heavy workloads and over-promotion to bullying and blame culture. STUDIES HAVE LISTED AND COMMUNICATED THE TOP STRESS REASONS AT WORKPLACES, AND HERE’S A LIST OF THE ONES WE FIND MOST COMMON: • Insufficient workloads, making people feel that their skills are being underused. • A lack of interpersonal support or poor working relationships leading to a sense of isolation. • People being asked to do a job for which they have insufficient experience or training. • Difficulty settling into a new promotion, both in terms of meeting the new role’s requirements and adapting to possible changes in relationships with colleagues. • A blame culture within your business where people are afraid to get things wrong or to admit to making mistakes. • Weak or ineffective management which leaves employees feeling they don’t have a sense of direction. Or overmanagement, which can leave employees feeling undervalued and affect their self-esteem. • Multiple reporting lines for employees, with each manager asking for their work to be prioritized.
18 | November 2018
• A poor physical working environment, eg excessive heat, cold or noise, inadequate lighting, uncomfortable seating, malfunctioning equipment, etc. Well, after getting a closer look of why we tend to get stressed at work, it is time to think proactively on HOW to cope with these stressful moments. Hence, we decided to oppose the 8 common factors that lead to stress with other 8 ways to better handle stress. 1. SEE THE BIG PICTURE Ask your boss what are your key deliverables. Be clear about your job objectives and how you can add value to your department. Don’t get bogged down by your various tasks, but prioritize and do one task at a time. 2. TAKE TIME OUT Have a relaxing chat with your colleague or friend, have a stretch at the photocopy machine or pop downstairs to buy a snack. Getting a breath of fresh air will help you to cool off your feelings of stress, anger or irritation. 3. DON’T SMOKE, EAT OR HAVE CAFFEINE TO DE-STRESS “Nicotine is a powerful stimulant which can lead to higher, not lower, levels of anxiety. Coffee contains caffeine which can raise levels of the stress hormone cortisol. It also has a mild addictive effect. To relax your mind, drink less coffee,” says Dr Fong. Stress may also make you reach for junk food, such as potato chips or doughnuts which are high caloric snacks. Where possible, try to reduce snacking. When you really must snack, eat healthily and stock up your work desk with healthy alternatives, such as: nuts, dried fruits like raisins, fruits, or vegetables.
4. ESCAPE FOR AN INSTANT Think of one instance in your life when you were happy and relaxed. Hold that image in your mind for at least one minute. Keep a postcard or cut-out image of your favorite landscape on your wall and look at it when you are stressed. 5. DON’T BE A HERO If you over-commit by taking on too many projects with unrealistic deadlines, you will not only lose credibility at work but you will also stress yourself out unnecessarily. If you can delegate or share the responsibility for some projects, go ahead. 6. GET ENOUGH REST Give your body the sleep it needs – at least seven to nine hours a night. Your stress levels will drop when you are well rested and you will be able to take on your job challenges with more composure. 7. GET ADEQUATE EXERCISE Regular exercise is not only important in keeping you physically healthy but it also promotes mental well-being. Exercise produces endorphins, which are chemicals in the brain that act as natural painkillers, leading to improved sleep and reduced stress levels. World Health Organization recommends that healthy adults should target to do at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic physical activity a week. 8. DON’T BE SO HARD ON YOURSELF Much of our stress is self-imposed. Most of us set targets regarding desired salaries or positions on the corporate ladder. When we don’t achieve our targets, we get stressed and depressed. Recognize that success is in the eye of the beholder, and that ambitions take time, opportunity and, often, luck to materialize. Don’t take yourself too seriously.

SMART - RELATIONSHIPS
How Relationships Shape Our Characters? BY: SAMAR GAMIL
It’s amazing how every relationship we passed throughout our lives has helped in building, developing, and shaping our current characters. We are the final product of how we reacted, handled, or didn’t handle everything we passed through in life; as if we are huge inventories filled with this gigantic size of memories and feelings that have their own operating software, and are perfectly programmed to handle everything and everyone around us making us the people who we are today.
20 | November 2018
I learnt by time that there are no benchmarks in relationships; each relationship is a special case of its own, including its own customized set of factors that shaped it i.e. type of relationship, relationship duration, characters of both parties, their history if any, the mental alignment of each. From my point of view, what really matters the most, is the intensity of emotional and mental alignment together with the other person that caused us to form a new common perception of life which may have permanently changed us. Analyzing different types of relationships for a long time made me realize that there are two main checkpoints in any relationship. The first is how it started and the other -and probably the most importantl- the quality of its closure. Between those two checkpoints lie the memories that we choose to cherish as well as those we choose to hide in our
subconscious mind. In all cases, once those memories weren’t nurtured properly or didn’t have their healthy closure; they inevitably find their way back to our bodies in the form of psychological or physical disorders.
face the root cause of our problems or assertively deal with what we passed through by denying it or underestimating its impact, our bodies teach us toughly the lesson we should have learnt, but this time the hard way!
Let’s take a helicopter view of our lives and revisit relationships that actually matter to us and start analyzing each; how it started, how it ended, how it shaped our characters, are we satisfied with it’s quality, are we stuck in it, did it become part of our daily routine instead of being a motivation as it used to be, what kind of memories do we still have for it, are we a victim of our own choices, do we love ourselves enough in it, what could we have done differently to be happy now….etc.
Sometimes all we need is to let it all out, share our feelings with a trusted person, talk about what’s really bothering us, seek help, find solutions, be more assertive and realize that living a life with quality is not an option.
Drawing the relationship timeline every now and then reflects how you manage your life and what kind of people you tend to attract. Remember this; when we fail to
In a nutshell, love yourself enough to stand for it when needed. Be happy, stay fit, work hard, enjoy the little things that matter, enjoy the company of your loved ones that are sometimes taken for granted and enjoy the journey of life which will have more relationships to come yet what matters the most is how will it shape you and most importantly how you can get the best out of it. SMART - IN-DEPTH INTERVIEW
KARIM FAHMI THE DENTIST, WRITER, AND ACTOR
A
talent that decided to deviate from the stable career path of him being a “Dentist to pursue his passion in doing what he has always wanted to do. A Talent that keeps developing and crystalizing day after day. From starring roles, to creative script writing mastering the art of surprising plot twists. He is indeed a persistent mindset that is set to succeed and excel. What we really noticed from our interview is how passionate and eager Karim is to give more to his work. Fahmi shares with us his upcoming plans for both, cinema and TV.
22 | November 2018
1.WHAT IS HARDER FOR YOU TO PERFORM, PLAYING A ROLE OF YOUR OWN CREATION OR THE COURTESY OF ANOTHER WRITER? Both are hard and need a lot of work, and studies. May be when you are the one who is writing the script you tend to write down many drafts in the process of the crystallization and developing the idea. Where we can consider that if I am the scriptwriter it give me the privilege to study the role better and of course get more involved in the story which is considered a wider chance of studying. Yet, both remain at the same level of hardness. 2.WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES? Football, PlayStation, and different cards games, estimation and jacks. Of course playing or watching soccer games is number one. 3.WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE ACTORS INTERNATIONALLY? Ben Stiller, he owns a brilliant mind. I like his work so much especially that he is a director and scriptwriter besides being an actor. I think we are like-minded. 4.IN WHAT DIRECTION DO YOU CATEGORIZE YOURSELF AS AN ACTOR? I can’t really categorize myself in a certain direction. I play the role that the script acquires, either it’s comedy, action, tragedy. However; if there is a categorization I believe I am definitely not a comedian. If the situation is written for a light comedy I will do it; however, I don’t find comedy my thing. 5.WHAT REMAINS THE HARDEST SCRIPT WRITING THEME TO WRITE? Comedy of course. It is the hardest theme of writing all over the world is comedy. It is well known that a great comedy writer can write whatever else theme, suspense, action, tragedy, or whatever. There’s a famous quote that describes the talented comedy writer as a resident in the top floor of a building, he can easily move down the stairs to write other themes. 6.A ROLE THAT HAD A GREAT INFLUENCE ON YOUR CHARACTER, EITHER GOOD OR BAD. Assem in “Hekayat Banat.” The impact I mean inhere is not any changes in my personality but this role was the first character I was known for. People would meet me in the streets and call me with Assem, this is the kind of influence I opposed. On the other hand, the role that I played and influenced the way I talk, it was Karam in “El-Hesab Yegma’” I was playing the role of a poor, bully man who lives in hard low living standards. Karam really influenced the way I speak especially that a series takes a quiet period to shoot, so I remained Karam in my personal life for a while. 7.WHAT IS THE ROLE YOU DAYDREAM ABOUT PLAYING? To be honest, there is no certain role that I wish for. I would love to play any role that is well sculptured and written. What I aim for is to perform something new and different that makes me go with the flow of the script. Besides the movies I write, I wish to be handed with a different set of characters

8.WHAT IS THE MOVIE/SERIES THAT YOU HAD BIG EXPECTATIONS AND IT DID NOT REALLY GET THE FEEDBACK BY THE AUDIENCES -EITHER IT WAS YOUR SCRIPT OR YOU WERE AN ACTOR? “Ard Khas” written by Mohamed Abd el Moaty, directed by Hady El Bagoury, Hany Osama. If was the first series to be captured using a 16mm lens. It was the first series for me to perform and I expected a greater success for this project. However; it was a really respectable work from the script, shooting, to all the talents who contributed in. And until now, there is no other series that is shot with the same capabilities of this show. 9.HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO ALWAYS FIND A SLOT TO WORKOUT AND STAY ALWAYS IN SHAPE? Well, to maintain your body to stay always in shape is really hard. It acquires exercise every day, and special food, I am on diet all the time. Friday is the only free day that I abuse by eating everything on this planet. I work-out for 2 hours a day at the gym, this slot of my life nobody dares to mess with it; except while shooting, of course. In case I am travelling, I definitely ruin all the diet and dismiss the exercise part during the vacation, so when I return if have to double the effort to compensate what I missed. In a nutshell, exercising at the gym is very essential for me to keep the body shape as well as the football matches I play with my friends. 24 | November 2018
10. for sure. There is no other sport that overcomes the soccer game for me. 11.ARE THERE ANY UPCOMING PROJECTS IN THE PIPELINE? We are preparing for Ramadan series that is the courtesy of Mohamed Abd El Moaty, directed by Magdy El Semiry and produced by Aroma. We are currently in the preparation phase aiming to be aired during Ramadan. For the cinema, I am currently preparing for a movie that is taking a quite long time to be ready to hit the road. I am the scriptwriter for the movie, and one of the starring casts, this movie will contain a lot of stars, at least 100. The movie will be produced by Ahmed El Sobky and Mohamed El Sobky.

CHEVY MALIBU
Restyled and ready to impress With a new grille and fascia, the 2019 Malibu midsize car completes a refreshing design update that demands attention before you even step inside its refined interior. Also new in 2019 is the debut of the exciting and sporty Malibu RS that turns up the wow factor at a price you’ll appreciate. The newly redesigned front fascia of the Malibu demands attention as soon as you face it. That sleek, sporty and sculpted exterior continues to impress from every aerodynamic angle — accented by available LED daytime running lamps, dual exhaust outlets and LED tail-lamps. Inside, you’ll find a spacious, comfortable and quiet interior with refined touches like available steering wheel-mounted controls that put ingenious technology at your fingertips. The new RS† brings a new level of style to the Malibu lineup. The exterior features an exposed dual exhaust design, a rear spoiler, unique 18-inch machined wheels, Black sport grille and bowtie emblems, and RS badging. Inside, you’ll find a leather-wrapped shifter and steering wheel, and a power driver seat. This midsize car offers two turbocharged engines that allow you to choose the balance you want between performance and fuel efficiency.
MG6
Equipment levels are generous, however, with features like a 360-degree parking camera and voice control. On the safety front, the MG6 gets six airbags, autonomous emergency braking and a lane departure warning system. Despite the sloping roofline the rear offers reasonable space for adult occupants and continues the front’s black and red look. Passengers get their own air vents and a USB charger in the back of the centre console. The boot is reasonably big, but on our car part of the parcel shelf had already fallen off. It switches to 17-inch wheels, but body control seems largely unaffected. The petrol and electric units work seamlessly together, and the only real indication you’re in a hybrid is the subtle whine from the engine.

MEET WITH FLORIAN GRUHL THE GENERAL MANAGER OF THE HILTON LUXOR RESORT AND SPA
1. FROM YOUR POINT OF VIEW, WHAT DISTINGUISHES HILTON AMONG OTHER HOTELS? Hilton is a leading global hospitality company that is dedicated to fulfilling its mission to be the world’s most hospitable company by delivering exceptional experiences – every hotel, every guest, every time. The company also manages an award-winning customer loyalty program, Hilton Honors. Also, Hilton isn’t only serving guests by the highest standards, it provides their Team Members a comfortable work environment with great opportunities to grow and develop. That’s why Hilton started the Thrive@Hilton program. Hilton is more than just a place to work; our Team Members are the “Heart of Hilton” and at the core of all our success on a daily basis. By 2030, we plan to double our social impact and reduce our environmental footprint in half. 2. HOW WELL DO YOU BELIEVE THIS DYNAMIC INDUSTRY IS DELIVERING QUALITY SERVICES IN EGYPT IN COMPARISON TO OTHERS AROUND THE GLOBE? I believe that Hilton is a very competitive company in Egypt. At Hilton Luxor Resort & Spa, we have loyal customers due to fantastic products and great customer service, which reflects in the amazing guest feedback we are receiving on a daily basis across all our different properties. 3. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO JOIN THE HOSPITALITY SECTOR AT THE FIRST PLACE? From a very young age, I enjoyed travel32 | November 2018
ling and staying at hotels with my parents. During one stay at a Hilton hotel in USA, the book “Be my guest” of our great founder Conrad Hilton fell into my hands, once I read this inspirational book about his story of founding the world’s leading hotel company in Texas 100 years ago, I knew that I want to become as well a real hotelier. 4. DUE TO YOUR VAST EXPERIENCE; YOU HAVE BEEN ASSIGNED TO WORK ON DIFFERENT COUNTRIES WITH DIFFERENT CULTURES AND VARIOUS TARGET MARKETS. SHARE WITH US THE IMPACT OF THIS MULTI-CULTURED EXPERIENCE ON YOUR PERSONALITY AND WHAT DO YOU FIND DISTINGUISHED IN EGYPT. I have now 16 years of experience in the hospitality industry having started my career as a Trainee at Hilton Bonn in Germany in 2002. I ascended from Food &
Beverage Supervisor to Food & Beverage Manager in both Europe and the Middle East before becoming Operations Manager at the Hilton Salalah Resort in the Sultanate of Oman in 2012. In June 2014, I was appointed Director of Operations at Hilton Kuwait Resort, before I started as General Manager of Hilton Luxor Resort & Spa in May 2018. From all these years of working in different roles for Hilton Hotels & Resort in 5 countries on 3 continents, I gained much experience and knowledge in the field of tourism which I would like to use now to have a positive impact on the business for the Hilton Luxor Resort & Spa and the amazing city of Luxor. Over all these years I have worked with many different nationalities, but I must say the people of Upper Egypt and specially Luxor are the warmest and friendliest people I have ever worked with. I am proud to be part of an outstanding team and the General Manager of the best and most beautiful resort in Luxor.
INTERVIEW
MEET WITH SOHA EL TORGOMAN
CLUSTER GENERAL MANAGER OF RAMSES HILTON & HILTON CAIRO WORLD TRADE CENTER RESIDENCE 1. SCALING UP THE JOB RESPONSIBILITIES FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER OF HILTON HURGHADA RESORT TO THE CLUSTER GENERAL MANAGER OF RAMSES HILTON AND HILTON CAIRO WORLD TRADE CENTER RESIDENCES HILTON IS A CHALLENGING CAREER MOVE, HOW DO YOU SEE THIS OPPORTUNITY? The challenges are more about moving from a resort to living in the city; in Hurghada, things were so laid back and relaxing, but in Cairo, the rhythm of the city is fast. Also, as a female let me tell you the whole wardrobe changed from smart casual to business formal. The lifestyle changed from walking on the beach to work, it’s not an option to walk from the hotel to the Center in Cairo. In Cairo things differ from Hurghada, guests in Hurghada come to enjoy the sun and relax so all efforts are towards availing facilities for families to enjoy their vacation especially that they come for a week or so, so you have time to interact and attend during their stay to their requests or comments, but in Cairo most of our guests are business travelers and their rhythm is really fast. They stay for a couple of nights only so, we should be up to the challenge in order not to make their day any harder. In my opinion the job responsibility of the General Manager whether in a resort or a city hotel is the same, what makes the difference is the guests’ needs and type of challenge each property & each location brings. 2. WOULD YOU GIVE US A HINT ABOUT YOUR VISION TOWARDS THE HOTEL IN REGARDS TO YOUR CURRENT JOB DUTY? We are currently working on a full renovation master plan for the Ramses Hilton. And after 35 years, we have actually initiated the renovation process of the Hotel. The execution started in 2016 with the 3 upper floors including OPIA Rooftop Lounge & Bar in addition to the Hotel Facade. In addition to a new Executive Lounge that launched end of 2017.
Our next phase will include the entire Lobby level with new reception, lounges, restaurants and ballroom. This in addition to 5 guest rooms’ floors and so on, until we complete the entire hotel over a couple of years. 3. SHARE WITH US YOUR CAREER JOURNEY IN THE HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT INDUSTRY THAT LED YOU TO BE IN CHARGE FOR ONE OF THE BIGGEST NAMES IN THE EGYPTIAN MARKET. I joined Hilton in 1981 where I started in Ramses Hilton as a receptionist. I had no experience at the time, so that was my first lesson in hospitality. I stayed in Front Office till late 80s. After 1987, I held various managerial positions as Assistant Office Manager and Director of Business Development. In 1998, I was offered my first General Manager role at Hilton Ain Al Sokhna. In 2002, I was appointed General Manager of Hilton Hurghada Resort which was followed by my latest role which is a Cluster General Manager for Ramses Hilton & Hilton Cairo World Trade Center Residences in 2016. I am the first Egyptian & Arab female to manage a hotel in Egypt and in Hilton, and I was recognized by the U.N. World Tourism Organization on 2007 World Tourism Day. I was also awarded The Hilton EMEA Leadership award in 2016 and the Hilton MEA President’s Award in 2017. This is in addition to being elected a Member of the Egyptian Hotel Association & Chairman of the Red Sea Chamber from 2015 until the beginning of 2016, when I was transferred to Cairo and had to leave my position at the Red Sea. I was also appointed Member of The Egyptian Tourism Authority & a Member of the Technical Committee for the Higher Council of Tourism 2016-2018. 4. WHAT BEST DESCRIBES YOUR JOURNEY FROM FRONT OFFICE AGENT UP TO CLUSTER GENERAL MANAGER? If there’s one thing that majorly contributes to being successful, it is to “love what you are doing”. I’ve always loved tourism and the
hotel industry specifically. In my opinion, this is a very rich industry where you can create an experience, and leave an impression on your guests and all stakeholders. And let’s be honest; for any tourist or guest, the first thing that will leave an impression is how their stay was and how warmly they were welcomed. Here, you can truly make a change. I began my career at a travel agency before I joined the hotel industry. I later went back to a travel agency, but that time I realized that this isn’t where I belong; I realized then that I’m passionate about hospitality and that this is the career path I want to pursue. Another key factor to reach success in this industry is your perception of it. To me, a hotel is like a big mansion, you have to make it warm and welcoming and always new; and it is my responsibility to be fully in charge and involved in everything. It is the way you run it that determines how it stands out. When you offer something new to the guests, the market, and the team; you succeed at making the entire entity remarkable and unique. FITNESS - BULLETINS
FOR THE LOVE OF PILATES The surge of popularity that Pilates has enjoyed in recent years has been powered to a large extent by a wave of women participants and instructors, leaving some with the impression that the Pilates method is more for women. Core strength, flexibility, balance, uniform development, and efficient movement patterns — all are hallmarks of Pilates training and highly relevant to men’s fitness. The integrative component of Pilates can be especially beneficial for men, whose workouts often emphasize a part-by-part approach to muscular development, such as occurs in weightlifting. Pilates, by contrast, emphasizes moving from the center of the body, the powerhouse, and developing core strength in the deep muscles of the center to stabilize the trunk and protect the back. This kind of core training makes Pilates an excellent technique for whole-body fitness, as well as a foundation for cross training with other kinds of sports and exercise.
There is nothing specifically different about Pilates training for men, especially in the beginning. The Pilates method is the same for all. Developed on a man’s body, and taught with input from both men and women, Pilates is founded on healthy movement principles for the human body in general. Men might find that their muscles are a little tighter than women’s, especially in the hips and hamstrings, but exercises can be easily modified to allow those areas to stretch out gradually. Modification of exercises is commonplace in Pilates, allowing it to meet a variety of needs in practitioners.
Increasing flexibility is a goal that Pilates addresses in a way that men often feel comfortable with. Pilates works toward functional fitness. That is, the ability to have the strength, balance, and flexibility that allows one to move through daily-life tasks with grace and ease. To this end, Pilates exercises do seek to increase flexibility and range of motion, but one won’t find the kind of pretzel stretches in Pilates that one might find in gymnastics or yoga.
Pilates is a body/mind practice where part of the exercise is to bring one’s full care and attention to every movement. Similarly, exacting alignment and core training that goes beyond the superficial muscles require more subtle attention and microadjustments than some men are used to finding in an exercise class.
The best way to start learning about Pilates is by taking classes. You might find that women outnumber men by quite a bit. While that demographic is changing, you’ll probably have to deal with being the minority gender, so be forewarned.
36 | November 2018
There is none of the “just power through” kind of attitude that men might be used to from gyms. This often becomes most apparent when working with the Pilates equipment, which, though it is resistance equipment, is not intended to be overpowered. In fact, sometimes the lightest setting on a piece of equipment, such as the reformer, is the most challenging for the core muscles. In Pilates, controlled, well-aligned movement is the ticket to a deeper level of fitness.

ABS ARE MADE IN THE KITCHEN If abs are made in the kitchen then clearly the problem is we don’t know what the recipe. To create chiseled abs your diet needs to be as strict as your workout plan. Some experts recommend eating clean and eating six small meals a day instead of the conventional three. Eating clean means removing sugar and processed foods from your diet, while this is healthy sound advice weight loss or fat loss really is as simple as eating in a calorie deficit, eating less calories than your body needs.
YOU CAN´T CRUNCH YOUR WAY TO A SIX PACK Don’t buy into the myth that you can crunch your way to a six pack. Classic ab moves like crunches and sit ups work on the muscles that help you to flex, or round the lower spine. Whereas authentic core exercises work the muscles that prevent your spine form rounding, they transfer force from your lower body to your upper body (think of a golf swing) and vice a versa.
Core exercises engage the same muscles as crunches with the added benefit of also targeting your hip and lower back muscles. Core exercises are executed in a stable There is a caveat: make sure you are getting adequate protein to help build the natural position and include the obvious plank, mountain climbers, and even the muscle in your midsection. DITCH THE STEADY STATE CARDIO Another myth to disregard in the face of modern research is that running burns more calories than lifting. The University of Southern Maine found that a single set of weightlifting burns the same number of calories as running a 6-minute mile run for the same amount of time. Additionally, there is the metabolic boost of weight training and the fact that your body is being provided with the necessary stimulus to build new lean tissue and gain strength. WORK SMART Make the most of the time you have to train. If you only have an hour in the gym use it wisely, don’t focus on cardio or repetitive ab exercises, rather keep moving during your resistance training. A good trainer tip is to use supersets and circuit style training that way you’ll get more done and yield optimal results. An extensive Spanish study showed that men who trained weights in a circuit gained the same amount of muscle as men who trained straight sets, even though their workouts were 42% shorter. HOW TO TRAIN AND EAT TO GAIN LEAN MUSCLE MASS FOR THIN GUYS?
HOW CAN I GET MORE ENERGY FOR EARLY MORNING WORKOUTS?
Hypertrophy training will place your muscles under the greatest amount of tension and result in building and sustaining lean muscle mass. This is the type of training that bodybuilder’s use. You will use compound movements such as the squat, bench press, deadlift, pull-ups and press. As a beginner, you should be working out 3 times a week with a day of rest in between sessions. All 3 sessions should be full body workouts, as this will help to build the body evenly while correcting strength imbalances. When it comes to nutrition, being consistent and clean is the best way to go. Be sure to eat a balanced meal of protein, complex carbohydrates and fats every 2 to 3 hours. Supplement your muscles pre and post workout with a protein shake. Ideally, you want to consume between 0.6 grams and 0.8 grams of protein per pound of bodyweight each day. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water! 8 glasses a day is still the standard. Lastly, keep changing up your training and nutrition plans. Keep it interesting that way you can avoid boredom.
If you are getting adequate rest but you’re still not feeling energized in the morning, the problem may be that your body is in a state of ketosis after fasting throughout the evening during your sleep. Ketosis is when the body is using fat for energy. If you aren’t eating enough carbohydrates, then your body turns to fat for energy. This can cause that low energy feeling before your workouts. Green tea, green juices, coffee and even getting sunlight can help boost energy levels. Starting your workout routine with a fast-tempo, blood circulating dynamic warm up may not only help boost energy but will help prevent injuries caused by low energy, low focus workouts.

Lisa Hack, Personal & Group Trainer WILL I LOSE MY CURVES IF I WORK OUT EXCESSIVELY TO SHED BELLY FAT? If you do too much cardio, you may just trim away those curves you love having. So the trick is to find the right balance between cardio and resistance or weight training. If you love the treadmill, spend your time on a 15% incline. You can also hit the stepper or elliptical trainer. Don’t forget to add those allimportant, butt-firming, leg-toning squats and lunges. To keep your breasts from shrinking because of too much cardio, do upper body weight training such as the chest press and incline fly.
Victoria Taylor, Registered Dietitian DOES IT MATTER WHAT TIME YOU EAT YOUR MEALS? There’s some evidence that eating breakfast is linked to a lower risk of obesity, supporting the theory that it’s better to eat earlier than later. More research is needed about which meal should provide the most energy. We probably do need to tune back into our body clocks – eating when our body really needs food rather than when we have time. This doesn’t mean not eating after a certain time, but perhaps eating regular meals and more of our calories earlier in the day. However, it is the type of foods you choose and portion sizes that have the biggest impact on your health.

WHICH EXERCISES WOULD HELP IMPROVE POSTURE FOR ROUNDED NECK?
WHAT EXERCISES WILL HELP REDUCE CELLULITE ON THE HAMSTRINGS?
Strengthening the muscles in your posterior chain (your back), especially your upper back, is important to help combat rounding of the back. Perform a strength training routine that will challenge those muscles twice a week and you may see some improvement in postural positioning. Regularly stretching your chest and the front portion of the shoulders will give room for more range of motion and less tightness, which will then allow your shoulders to pull back to a neutral positioning.
Cellulite can be one of the most frustrating aspects to losing weight. You may find yourself losing weight everywhere but the cellulite still persists. Ridding your body of cellulite involves a combination of High Intensity Interval Training and a proper diet. The following exercises supports in beating the stubbornness of your cellulite, Burpees, Bodyweight Squats, Push-ups, Bodyweight Lunges, Jump Squats, and Mountain Climbers.

Ways to Feed Your Brain BY ALAA BASYOUNI
Your brain is a big deal. It is the control center of your body, it is in charge of keeping your heart beating and lungs breathing and allowing you to move, feel and think. Thus, it is important to keep your brain in its peak working condition. The foods you eat play an integral role in keeping your brain healthy and can improve various mental tasks, such as memory and concentration. The effects of different foods on our behavior and cognitive performance have been known for years without needing to be examined closely – caffeine stimulates the brain; when kids eat too much sugar, they turn “hyper”; and chocolate makes us all feel great instantly. For centuries these experiences have been known and our dietary behaviors reflect this. Recently, the idea of nutritional effects on the brain have been developed further and extensive research into effects of food on brain functions that are not clearly evident or observable have emerged.

HOW CAN YOU GUARANTEE A BETTER MENTAL HEALTH AND FUNCTION? SIMPLY INCORPORATE MORE OF THE TIPS BELOW INTO YOUR LIFESTYLE. 1- LIMIT RED MEAT Eating foods high in saturated fats, like red meat, butter and dairy products, are associated with the development of degenerative diseases, including heart disease and Alzheimer’s disease. 2- DO NOT FORGET FISH Fish is a great source of omega-3, the type of fatty acid your body cannot produce, and it is good for your brain. At least twice a week, eat omega3-rich fish, such as salmon, cod, or tuna. 3- LOAD YOUR PLATE WITH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES Spinach, broccoli and other leafy green vegetables are rich in many brainloving nutrients. Red grapes and berries are packed with antioxidants; they can potentially slow aging in the brain and elsewhere. Eat some every day. 4- ENJOY DARK CHOCOLATE Dark chocolate contains flavonoids, which are strong antioxidants. They potentially improve blood flow to the brain and reduce inflammation. Unsweetened cocoa powder offers the greatest benefit, followed by dark chocolate. 5- SPICE UP YOUR LIFE Many herbs and spices – such as turmeric, cinnamon and ginger – are packed with antioxidants that may decrease harmful inflammation in the brain and elsewhere. The strong flavors and the bright intense colors are clues to the benefit hiding inside your spice cabinet.
The brain is an extremely active organ which demands an extremely high percentage of the overall daily energy requirements supplied by food. The effect of poor nutrition can lead to reduced mental performance which can be reflected as increased stress, sleep disturbances and fatigue. Although these states are not considered “diseases” they are daily stressors that affect our psychological wellbeing. Our ability to think is definitely affected, by having a lower self esteem and performance. This is a classic example of a psychological cycle. All aspects of the cycle impact psychological wellbeing which feeds lower selfesteem. It is becoming more necessary to evaluate the function of diet on these factors before turning to medications. Many studies have focused on the improved cognitive and mood elevating effects in adults who consume a Mediterranean diet. Mediterranean-style diet is rich in fish, whole grains, green leafy vegetables, olives, and nuts helps maintain brain health and may reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. People who adhere to the diet describe better self-rated health which has been found to influence overall energy and vitality. Cook and eat fresh food, savor the taste, enjoy dining with family and friends. A Mediterranean regimen is more than just a diet. It is a lifestyle, a way of living well.
6- GRAB A CUP OF COFFEE OR TEA Coffee, one of the world’s most popular drinks, has been shown to improve memory and potentially decrease your risk of dementia. Up to three cups of black coffee a day are recommended. Black and green teas contain brainboosting antioxidants; give your tea plenty of time to steep before you drink to get the maximum benefit your brain deserves. 7- EAT PLENTY OF WHOLE GRAINS Whole grains, such as oats, and quinoa are rich in many of the B vitamins that work to reduce inflammation of the brain, potentially preserving your memory. 8- EAT EGGS IN MODERATION The proteins and vitamins B, D and E in eggs and egg yolks may help to improve memory. You can enjoy the benefits of these vitamins while keeping your cholesterol to a minimum by mixing whole eggs with egg whites to round out your omelet or scrambled eggs. 9- GRAB A HANDFUL OF NUTS Nuts contain many of brain-boosting nutrients, including vitamin E, healthy fats and plant compounds. While all nuts are good for your brain, walnuts may have an extra edge-other than being shaped like a brain- they also deliver omega-3 fatty acids. The Bottom Line is many foods can help keep your brain healthy. Some foods, such as the fruits and vegetables in this list, as well as tea and coffee, have antioxidants that help protect your brain from damage. Others, such as nuts and eggs, contain nutrients that support memory and brain development. You can help support your brain health and boost your alertness, memory and mood by strategically including these foods in your diet. November 2018 | 43
BODY & HEALTH -
MINDFUL EATING
WE ARE WHAT WE EAT TURMERIC:
Ease inflammation, slow cancer, treat depression and other conditions. This golden spice delivers some solid-gold benefits. That’s thanks to its high amounts of curcumin, a powerful antioxidant. Studies show curcumin can help treat a range of health problems, from minor toothaches to chronic conditions like arthritis, heart disease and diabetes. Researchers are also studying its potential as a treatment for Alzheimer’s disease, as well as colon, prostate and breast cancers. Results of a small clinical trial, published in 2014, boosted evidence that turmeric may be a safe and effective treatment for depression.
GINGER:
Soothe nausea, fight arthritis pain. Ginger is well-known for easing a queasy stomach. Studies show it can help soothe morning sickness, as well as nausea from surgery or chemotherapy. And while there’s no hard evidence it works, many people take ginger for motion sickness. Ginger is also packed with “gingerols,” inflammation-fighting compounds which some experts believe may help fight some cancers, reduce osteoarthritis pain and soothe sore muscles. In one study, people who took ginger capsules daily for 11 days 44 | November 2018
had 25 percent less muscle pain when they exercised, compared to those who took a placebo. Another study found that ginger-extract injections helped relieve osteoarthritis-related knee pain.
GARLIC:
Lower high blood pressure, boost immunity. With its potent bioactive compounds and other nutrients, garlic may be good for much more than warding off vampires. Treatments with garlic extracts, powders and supplements have been found to significantly lower high blood pressure. In one study of more than 200 people with hypertension, taking daily garlic supplements reduced blood pressure as effectively as the beta-blocker drug atenolol. And, although some experts say the evidence is iffy, several studies suggest garlic supplements may help prevent colds and speed recovery.
PEPPERMINT:
Boost mood and improve focus, relieve IBS symptoms, ease nausea. Having a bad day? Brew a pot of peppermint tea. Research suggests the minty aroma may help lift mood and sharpen fuzzy thinking. Some studies
suggest the scent may also soothe an upset stomach. In one small study, women who sniffed peppermint spirits after surgery reported much less nausea than those on a placebo or anti-nausea meds. While more research is needed in those areas, multiple studies show peppermint oil can ease pain from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Experts think it works by reducing bloating and relaxing muscles in the colon.
ROSEMARY:
Improve brain function and mood, promote hair growth A member of the mint family, rosemary is prized both for its flavor and its fragrance. Studies show its woodsy scent helps improve concentration and may boost mood. Recent studies suggest that rosemary, even in the small amounts common in cooking, may help prevent cognitive decline in older people. One other benefit for your noggin: Rosemary can fight hair loss. In one 2015 study, researchers compared rosemary oil to minoxidil, a common treatment for balding. The group that treated their scalps with rosemary oil had similar hair growth (and less scalp itching) over six months compared to those who used the medication.
EDITORIAL FEATURE - MAESTRO
Maestro: Dining With An Italian Flair 1. FIRST, WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW DID YOUR CAREER AS A CHEF BEGIN ? This goes way back in time at early 80s. I come from Como Italy, and my career began right after my graduation. I worked at seventeen countries across several regions between Middle East, Far East, and Caribbean. My experience here in Egypt started with joining Intercontinental Citystars, and I can tell that the country is promising and filled with the energy and optimism of the youth. Based on my experience in the Middle East, and as I’ve already visited Egypt almost twenty years ago, I’m familiar with the culture here and I’m looking forward to explore the country as it is today with new experiences. 2. ITALIAN CUISINE IS AMONG THE MOST FAVORED AROUND THE WORLD. IN YOUR OPINION WHAT MAKES THIS CUISINE SO SPECIAL ? I believe the secret is in the simplicity of our culinary heritage. Italian cuisine relies on using several simple ingredients in a cooking technique that refrains from complexity. After all, Italian cuisine is also Mediterranean, so we share the same ingredients used in several countries of that region including Egypt, the difference is in the technique and the preparation. Italian food is uncomplicated yet at the same time very flavorful. The ingredients aren’t overcooked, and this why you can experience the natural taste of every ingredient on its own. Through my current role as a chef, my main goal is to deliver excellence and make our guests experience the authentic taste of Italy.
3. WHAT ARE THE INGREDIENTS THAT ARE USED THE MOST IN THE ITALIAN CUISINE ? There are various ingredients like cheese, specially gorgonzola, vinegar, various oil, pasta, and most importantly tomato. 4. HOW DO YOU MAKE MAESTRO STAND OUT ? I believe that using premium ingredients is something you can’t compromise. We use top local ingredients as well as imported so that every dish is an indulgence onto its own. We craft our menus to best suit our guests’ preference while keeping the authentic identity of the Italian cuisine. As a chef, my approach is traditional and I like to steer away from fusions and complicated dishes. 5. WHAT DO YOU LOVE THE MOST ABOUT YOUR PROFESSION ? Despite the fact that I’ve been doing this job for decades, I still have this adrenaline rush every time I prepare a dish. My main motivation is to know that our guests have relished a unique experience and to present Italian food as it truly is, authentically and genuinely. I am a very dynamic person and I like to keep myself busy all the while at the kitchen. When it comes to kitchen’s operations, together with my great team we focus our energy on delivering an exquisite dining experience to our esteemed guests. I can firmly say that nothing beats the feeling of being in action in the kitchen. November 2018 | 45

Spicy Chicken & Avocado Wraps Prep Time: 5 mins - Cook Time: 8 mins Ingredients: • 1 chicken breast (approx 180g), thinly sliced at an angle • generous squeeze juice ½ lime • ½ tsp mild chilli powder • 1 garlic clove, chopped • 1 tsp olive oil • 2 seeded wraps • 1 avocado, halved and stoned • 1 roasted red pepper from a jar, sliced • a few sprigs coriander, chopped Methods: 1. Mix the chicken with the lime juice, chilli powder and garlic. 2. Heat the oil in a non-stick frying pan then fry the chicken for a couple of mins – it will cook very quickly so keep an eye on it. Meanwhile, warm the wraps following the pack instructions or, if you have a gas hob, heat them over the flame to slightly char them. Do not let them dry out or they are difficult to roll. 3. Squash half an avocado onto each wrap, add the peppers to the pan to warm them through then pile onto the wraps with the chicken, and sprinkle over the coriander. Roll up, cut in half and eat with your fingers. 46 | November 2018
Charred Baby Aubergine & Toasted Quinoa Salad Prep Time: 15 mins - Cook Time: 45 mins Ingredients: • 3 small leeks • 180g quinoa • 4 baby aubergines, each cut into 4 slices • 6 tbsp good-quality olive oil • 2 tbsp cider vinegar • 3 tbsp chopped dill • ½ small pack mint, chopped • 60g semi-dried tomatoes, roughly chopped • 2 tbsp hazelnuts, toasted and crushed • 150g pack soft herby goat’s cheese, crumbled Methods: 1. Bring a medium pan of salted water to the boil and add the leeks. Cook for 6-8 mins or until they have a slight bend to them. Drain and set aside. 2. Heat a large frying pan over a medium-high heat and tip in the quinoa. Toast for 5-6 mins or until lightly browned. Reduce the heat to low and pour in enough water to cover 1cm above the quinoa. Gently simmer for 15 mins, stirring occasionally, until the liquid has been absorbed. 3. Put the aubergines and leeks directly on the barbecue and brush with oil. Cook for 3-4 mins each side until lightly charred and tender. (Alternatively, brush the aubergines with 1 tbsp oil, put in a really hot griddle pan and cook each side for 3 mins or until lightly charred. Transfer to a plate and set aside. Brush the leeks with 1 tbsp oil and cook on either side for 4-5 mins or until charred. Set aside with the aubergines.) Once cool, cut the leeks in half lengthways. 4. Combine 3 tbsp of the olive oil with the cider vinegar and half the herbs. Season to taste. Toss the quinoa with the dressing and spoon onto a large plate. Top with the charred aubergines and leeks, and sprinkle over the tomatoes, hazelnuts and cheese. Finish with the reserved herbs and a good glug of the remaining olive oil.

Roast for 30 mins until tender and beginning to brown. 2. Meanwhile, fry the spices in the remaining oil for 1 min – they should sizzle and start to smell aromatic. Tip in the tomatoes, apricots, honey and a can of water. Simmer for 5 mins until the sauce is slightly reduced and the apricots plump, then stir in the veg and some seasoning. Serve with couscous or jacket potatoes. November 2018 | 47
