s the saying goes: April showers bring May flowers! Although the rain showers have been few and far between, there will be an abundance of flowers exchanging hands this month as we celebrate the always important holiday known as Mother’s Day! Although we love and appreciate our mothers (and wives) on a daily basis, it’s a chance to pay tribute to them with a little extra pampering and TLC. On a personal note, I’m very excited for my wife to celebrate her first Mother’s Day with our new son. It’s hard to believe that the school year is winding down, and summer is just around the corner. The kids are counting down the days till summer break, while parents are busy making plans for family vacations and summer camps. There are so many fun and exciting events taking place in our great city. Don’t forget to check out the calendar (page 6) for a list of things to do beginning in May. And as always, we love being able to offer a vast array of articles to our readers, both community related and general interest. We hope you enjoy. Sincerely,
Dan Bastien Dan Bastien President/Publisher

community news Initiative Announced to Prevent Teen Accidents and Deaths
T
by alexis prieto
he Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), along with County Tax Collectors, recently announced the launch of a new initiative designed to prevent one of the major causes of death and injury for teens on the road. The Parent’s Supervised Driving Program and complementary RoadReadyTM mobile app, sponsored by Ford Motor Company, are designed to optimize the 50 hours of supervised driving required for Florida teens. “The skills outlined in this guide and app are meant to help teens learn to be better drivers. It is one of the ways Ford works to help teens,” said Steve Kenner, Global Director of Ford’s Automotive Safety Office. “In addition to this program, Ford also offers Driving Skills for Life, which gives teens advanced real world training. Ford also offers MyKey technology, which gives parents options to help encourage safe driving behaviors even when the parents aren’t in the car.” Utilizing the sponsorship funds committed by Ford, The Parent’s Supervised Driving Program printed curriculum will provide parents and guardians with an advanced research, sophisticated and free tool to optimize the 50 hours (10 at night) of parental supervised driving required for the 155,000 Florida teens seeking learner licenses annually. The printed guide will be available for Floridians at licensing centers across the state in both English and Spanish versions. At an event in Orlando, Orange County Tax Collector Scott Randolph said “We are excited to partner with Ford Motor Company and Safe Roads Alliance in providing resources for parents and guardians of teens who are new to the roads. Last year we saw over 750,000 people come through our doors and we performed over 13,000 road tests. If each driver met the required 50 hours of supervised driving, that would
accumulate to 661,770 hours of practice. Providing a guide like The Parent’s Supervised Driving Program to every parent and guardian will ensure that those hours are spent educating teens on life-saving skills for the road. We will have these guides available at every office that performs written and road tests for learner’s permits.” The Program is available to parents and teens on multiple platforms, beginning with the printed curriculum that is distributed at FLHSMV and County Tax Collector offices when the teen receives their learner license. Parents and teens are also invited to connect with the program online and through social media, as well as the RoadReady mobile app that will help parents and teens log their drive times and track GPS mapped drives. The RoadReady mobile app is currently available free for iPhone from the App Store. The Parent’s Supervised Driving Program and RoadReady mobile app focus on the role of the parent in the teen driver education process and the Program encourages parents and teens to drive together in a variety of weather conditions and in unfamiliar settings, whether it be on more rural roads or in highway, city and heavy traffic situations. The Program offers an enhanced supervised driving experience and energizes parents and guardians to extend the supervised driving period beyond the state requirement. Through a public-private partnership supported by Ford Motor Company, FLHSMV and County Tax Collector offices are able to provide this valuable resource to parents of teen drivers at no cost to families or to taxpayers. The sponsorship allows the FLHSMV and County Tax Collector offices to provide parents with a needed resource geared toward skill development, and to help increase the types of circumstances and amount of time that teens drive with their parents prior to driving independently. “This state–of–the art program was developed by the foremost experts and organizations in highway safety,” stated Jeff Larason, President of Safe Roads Alliance, who worked in partnership with the FLHSMV to develop the Program for the state.

community news Pinecrest Police Officer Receives Top Honors for Disarming Veteran Contemplating Suicide
O
by alexis prieto
fficer Julian Perez was awarded the L.E.O. (Law Enforcement Officer) Foundation’s 2013 Uniform Service Award during the foundation’s 14th annual awards gala this past March for stopping a veteran from committing suicide with a handgun. This award recognizes a Miami-Dade County law enforcement officer who performs in an outstanding or exemplary manner in a uniform patrol position. Officer Julian Perez was also awarded the Pinecrest Police Department 2013 Medal of Valor, which is reserved for outstanding performance or bravery, such as, risking one’s own life to save another or where an officer’s actions go above and beyond the call of duty. In addition, he was recognized by the Miami-Dade County Association of Chiefs of Police with the Officer of the Month Award in July 2013 and the Life Saving Award. Perez was also named the Pinecrest Police Officer of the Quarter in July 2013. Officer Perez arrived at the scene after a man called the 911-dispatch center and said he had a
gun and was going to shoot himself March 16, 2013. The man was sitting by a large tree with a handgun in his right hand when patrol units arrived at the scene. Officer Perez was able to diffuse the situation through dialogue and convinced the man to put the handgun down and move closer to him and farther from the gun. Officer Perez then made the decision to rush and grab the man to prevent him from getting a hold of the gun again. Officer Perez is Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) certified, as are all of Pinecrest police officers, and has been with the Pinecrest Police Department for five years. He currently serves as a patrol officer, crime scene investigator and field-training officer. And because of Officer Perez’s actions during this incident, he was chosen to be trained as a hostage negotiator and is part of the Pinecrest Police Crisis Management Team.
Officer Julian Perez of the Pinecrest Police Department recieves the MDPCA Award.

saiah Mustafa, better known as the “Old Spice Guy,” recently came to the University of Miami in order to teach young men to “scent responsibly.” A pop up pep rally with a performance from the Sunsations, welcomed Mustafa to Miami. The event included giveaways of the Old Spice body spray, an audience Q&A session, and photo opportunities with the actor. Mustafa’s stop in Miami was part of a nation-wide tour where he staged “manterventions” in order to teach students the correct way to use body spray, while highlighting Old Spice’s newest product, Refresh Body Spray. If he were able to give only one piece of advice to young men, he would tell them to “scent responsibly.”

Have you had multiple failed IVF cycles? You may be interested in learning more about the Thrive-IVF Research Study. The Thrive-IVF Research Study is evaluating the effectiveness, safety, and tolerability of NT100, an investigational medicine, in women who have had repeated IVF failures despite having good-quality embryos.

Survey conducted by Old Spice about body spray use.
We had the chance to ask Mustafa some questions about personal hygiene for young men. Here’s what he had to say:
What are the 4 most important personal hygiene steps for young men?
»» Scent responsibly »» When you spray Refresh Body spray, make sure you hold it 6 inches from your unclothed body & spray for only 2 seconds. »» Shower every day…be responsible enough to use Old Spice in the shower »» Oral hygiene is important. Make sure you brush your teeth and use mouthwash.
What are some personal hygiene tips that you think men should not skip:
Having too much body hair. I’m not saying go and wax everywhere. Just trim it down here and there. You know, on the arms and some on the chest.
Why do you think men skip hygiene steps?
Men are lazy. I’m teaching responsibility responsibly. Whether you’re tired or not, or lazy or not…it needs to be done.
NT100 is a novel treatment that is being evaluated to determine if it improves the chances of getting pregnant after IVF. If you have had three or more failed IVF cycles that included transfer of good-quality embryos, you may be eligible to participate in the Thrive-IVF Research Study. Qualified participants will receive study-related tests and procedures at no cost, including: ¡ An IVF cycle, including procedures and medications ¡ Study medication
Which hygiene step do you think they skip the most? Deodorant is pretty easy.
For more information:
What Old Spice products do you recommend for young men?
Body spray is perfect for late teens. That’s when a lot of boys are “conquering the seas of manhood.” That’s the time when puberty is at its peak. Two seconds will take care of the smell.

S

tormZone is a new school based multidisciplinary science and social studies education website that teaches students about the science of severe natural hazards – hurricanes, tornadoes, floods and flash floods, severe winter weather, extreme heat, wildfires, and earthquakes – and how emergency management agencies work with federal, state and local governments to prepare for and recover from such disasters. The site also covers the long-term impact of global climate change and how to become a Red Cross Volunteer. “In any conversation, the most talked-about topic is weather, whether it is local, national or even international,” said StormZone Director Bay Proby, who founded the program in 2006 in Miami, Florida. “Unfortunately, every year thousands of Americans find themselves in harm’s way from weather disasters. No one is exempt. That’s why students need to know about the most dangerous weather threats and actions to protect property and, in some extraordinary occasions, save lives. That’s what StormZone provides.” “Within this StormZone framework is an interactive exercise where students form their own local governments and plan how to recover from a major weather event,” Proby said. “Through this exercise, students learn about the role of emergency management, the importance of individual responsibility, organizational collaboration and project management skills when confronted with a disaster.” To help students and their families become “storm ready,” the program provides a Disaster Survival Kit that lists basic supplies for use at home Students conducting weather emergency preparedness simulations at local Emergency Operations Centers (EOCs). or in case of evacuation. Also included is a Family Communication Plan for family members to contact one another in case they are separated. Finally, StormZone lets students how to become American Red Cross volunteers who receive specialized training in disaster service, shelter management and staffing and mass care (food and water). The American Red Cross also provides young people with meaningful opportunities for education, training and community service through school-based programs. “A natural disaster can occur with little or no notice, with an enormous impact upon individuals and families,” added Proby. “After these events, the American Red Cross provides shelter, food, health and mental health services to help families get back on their feet.”

school news SEED School: A New Kind of Learning by alexis prieto
U
nder the belief that all children deserve access to a quality education, management consultants Raj Vinnakota and Eric Adler founded The SEED Foundation in 1997. The following year, Raj and Eric opened the country’s first college-prep, public boarding school, The SEED School of Washington, D.C. The SEED School of Maryland opened 10 years later. SEED schools were envisioned as a solution in a spectrum of options for improving educational outcomes. This spectrum is underdeveloped in the United States. The notion of “one-size-fits-all” upon which American public education has been built needs greater diversification to meet the needs of all students. The SEED School of Miami will be the third school in SEED’s network and will open in 2014. At SEED Miami, students in grades six through twelve live at the school from Sunday evening through Friday afternoon. Using the gift of time that comes with a 24-hour program, SEED reaches beyond the traditional school day and teaches students to thrive in a rigorous academic environment, to be ready for college, and to develop essential character traits for lifelong success—perseverance, self-confidence, and self-discipline. All of this happens in a safe, structured, and predictable environment—three healthy meals a day; consistent relationships with excellent role models; daily academic challenge and support; and extensive programs in athletics, visual and performing arts, and service. Students are held to strict performance standards and assessments to assure their progress toward college-readiness. The SEED Foundation has been invested in the Miami community for several years, and with the help of local partners, has achieved key milestones to support the opening of a SEED school. 16
www.thefloridavillager.com | May 2014
In 2010, The SEED Foundation partnered with Educate Tomorrow, a Miami, Florida-based nonprofit, to open the first SEED School in the state of Florida. The following year, The SEED Foundation was selected to serve as the school operator for such a school by the Florida Department of Education, and legislation was passed to authorize the funding of the operations of a boarding school in Florida. In 2012, SEED Miami’s charter application to the MiamiDade County Public School Board was approved. Since then, SEED has developed partnerships with organizations, including Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Educate Tomorrow, and Our Kids, which have rallied in support of South Florida’s first public boarding school.
Maria Ceballos-Zagales,Director of Student Support Services and Luna Otero, Director of Admissions.
Today, The SEED School of Miami Foundation is raising the private funds needed to make the school a reality. In 2013, the school received start-up funding from the state, which allowed SEED to conduct pre-opening outreach to students and families in the beginning of 2014. SEED’s track record is proven. They’re exceptionally proud of their students for their hard work and commitment to graduating from high school and progressing towards college graduation. 90 percent of SEED students
who enter the ninth grade graduate from high school and more than 80 percent of SEED graduates are firstgeneration college-bound. More than 90 percent of all SEED graduates have enrolled in college and 6 in 10 SEED graduates have graduated from college or are progressing towards college graduation SEED doesn’t stop after 12th grade. They are committed to the graduates’ success in college and beyond, and the College Transition & Success program will support every SEED graduate. Through the program’s handson advising and middle school through college success model, SEED alumni don’t just become college students; they become college graduates. The SEED School will enroll 60 students entering sixth grade in Fall 2014, and it will add a grade each year until it has 400 students enrolled in grades six through twelve. You can find our more information about The SEED School Miami, by visiting www.miami.seedschool.org or by calling (305) 600-1367.

almetto Bay was honored during the Great Parks Summit 2014 held in April at Fairchild Tropical Gardens. The Village of Parks (Palmetto Bay) was awarded the prestigious “William Lyman Phillips Award.” This award given yearly by Miami Dade County recognizes excellence in parks, design of open green spaces and efforts at conservation. As Mayor, I accepted the award given by Miami-Dade County Director of Parks, Jack Kardys and County Commissioner Dennis Moss. This is recognition that the Village has been successful in creating a park system that contributes to quality of life for families in our community, as well as considering the importance of the environment. The Village’s 2014 Earth Week activities held in our parks and local schools certainly is a great example of this. As a Village who is committed to preserving the environment, Earth Day has been expanded into Earth Week. Over 75,000 ladybugs were released in our local pre-schools and elementary schools, as well as the Meditation Garden on movie night during visits by Village representatives that included; Council woman Joan Lindsey, Outreach Police Officers Patience Glasko and Peter Judge, Parks Events Coordinator Mary Fernandez and myself. The Ladybug releases start the conversation with our children in their early years on protecting “Mother Earth” with school lead-up programs. The Palmetto Bay Tree Board sponsors a yearly Earth Week poster contest in the
Village schools. This year’s poster contest theme of the “Green Cities” was won by Westminster, who received a tree in recognition of the outstanding art work. During the month of April, the Mayor’s Challenge on Water Conservation sponsored by the Wayland Foundation takes place. Last year the Village came in 3rd nationally. This internet based program focuses on teaching and then pledging to use water conservation methods. An environmentally themed Friday Night Movie in Coral Reef Park (Frozen), the Tree Give-Away at Ludovici Park, the Family Bike Ride (our part of the Bike305 initiative) with a Naturalist’s talk at the Deering Estate rest stop, a Family Bar-B-Que, and a Family Mangrove Kayak Tour starting at Thalatta Estate round out Earth Week, bringing the family and the environment together for great community events in our parks. Palmetto Bay is about Parks, the quality of life they contribute and the great sense of community that continues to grow in the Village. beauty tips The EYES Have It!
T
by rose prieto
hey say that the eyes are the window to the soul. Well, I don’t know about that, but I can tell you one thing that is absolutely certain: the eyes are the window to youth and are incapable of hiding our emotion, our health and, particularly, our age. So what’s the latest and greatest advancement in the care of this delicate skin? The answer lies in education; understanding your skin, as well as the product-ingredients for which you choose to maintain that skin with. However, there’s no magic spell that a wand can fix; the key to youthful eyes is simple: maintain a consistent, daily ritual involving quality eye-specific products.
WHAT EYE CREAM IS BEST FOR YOU?
Virtually every skincare line carries at least one eye-cream or serum. Being realistic about what you expect your facial products to achieve is essential, but more importantly, knowing that you are doing all that you can possibly do, within your means, to delay the inevitability of wrinkled eye-skin, is priceless. Many factors come into play when searching for the best cream or serum for your skin: your skin type, life style, budget, diet, your race, as well as the climate you live in. Do you have allergies? Do you prefer a light-weight serum, a thicker cream or a cooling gel? How disciplined are you about your skincare rituals? Do you even have a ritual? Before you select an eye cream, you would need to assess your skin, in addition to your concerns: is the issue lack of under eye hydration, dark circles, fine lines, proactive anti-aging or all of the above? In a nutshell, what are your expectations and what end-result do you want your eye cream to achieve? There are a myriad of product lines which cater to various skin types. The key, however, is to find one that will address your specific concerns in a realistic way.
IS EYE SKIN A FREE-FOR-ALL?
Products used on the eye area, should be eye-specific, which means: never use face creams, facial lotions, body lotions, petroleum jelly or any other product not intended for under-eye skin. The skin surrounding the eyes is extremely delicate and vulnerable. It should be treated consciously. Always tap inward towards the nose and never pull out towards the ears. Eye skin is the thinnest skin on the body and the first area to show signs of aging. Moreover, the eye skin does not contain hair follicles, which make it void of sebaceous glands (your skin’s natural oil-producers). The body’s natural moisture-balance occurs through the hair follicles, utilizing the hair shaft as a roadway to disperse oil onto the skin.
WHAT DO I LIKE?
I’m a big fan of products with Glycolic Acid in them. Glycolic is an Alpha Hydroxy Acid exfoliator. It sloughs away dead skin cells to reveal new skin helping to thicken skin. Not to mention the perpetual use of Glycolic will stimulate not only collagen production within the dermal layers of the skin, but Hyaluronic Acid production as well (the stuff which promotes moisture in the skin). Chemical exfoliation, such as Glycolic, is Continued on page 36

Mike Cohen, a long-time professional drummer and owner of Musicians Discount Center is very proud of the history of his store and how Mike Cohen (left), owner of Musicians far they have come. He opened Discount Center, and his staff. “one of the first used vinyl record stores” in Florida – Records & Things – just outside the Homestead Air Force Base in 1981, after being “on the road” playing opening acts for the Allman Brothers. During the 80’s, business was booming and welcomed a second music store in Cutler Bay (its current location). But with the devastating ruins of Hurricane Andrew, his first music store was demolished. And after nine long months of work, diligence and reinvestment, the Musicians Discount Center, a “one of a kind music store” was once again a member of the business community. mommy in sports The New Age Debate: Kids & Cell Phones by Kristen Hewitt
E
verywhere you go you see kids and technology. They usually have their heads buried down and fingers feverishly tapping on their phones…completely oblivious to the world around them. Cell phones, iPhones, and iPads or other tablets seem to be the norm for tweens, and even our preschoolers are proficient in working learning apps on our phones. A key debate though is what is the appropriate age to give your child their own cell phone? One of my kid reporters on the Miami Marlins television show Billy’s Bunch was given his phone at age 9, and my niece received hers at 10. But are they mature enough to not lose it, drop it, break it, or use it responsibly? Kristen Bosse, Occupational Therapist at the Dan Marino Center in Weston said, “I think you have to look at each child individually. For children who leave school and go home on the bus it may be a safety issue. Their parents are able to call them and check to make sure they arrive home. For children whose parents are divorced, having their own phone may give the child the ability to call either parent when they want.” I decided to take this topic to Marlins Park and talk to some of the Marlins players who are also dads. Pitcher Steve Cishek, who is expecting a baby girl this summer said, “When I was a kid I didn’t get a phone until I was a senior in high school! My wife and I want our kids to read books. We see kids with iPads in restaurants that aren’t happy without them. We don’t get it.”

Mike Dunn, however, is ok with younger kids having phones, telling me, “I think once they get like 10-12 Kristen Hewitt interviewing Preston Wilson. years old, you can give them that kind of cell phone with preprogrammed numbers for emergencies only. No apps or internet access, though, that’s just trouble.” Former MLB star turned Fox Sports announcer Preston Wilson hasn’t given his 11 year old daughter a phone, and doesn’t see the need anytime soon. “She absolutely does not have a cell phone. My theory is at 10 or 11 she’s never going to be anywhere without me or her mother or someone from her school. So there’s no need for a cell phone. It’s my job as a father to be where she is.” Another hot issue between parents and kids with phones is the policing of texts. I would probably be snoop-mommy, however Bosse said, “Technology has really changed the parenting game. There are great apps that help you track location and shut off other apps during specific hours. For example, no Facebook while at school. I wouldn’t recommend snooping though. Be open with your kids, talk about boundaries, be proactive. If you let them slip they will slide.” Whatever you decide, don’t be pressured by your kids or what other parents do. As with all parenting decisions, go with your gut…and your wallet. Kristen Hewitt is a Producer for Fox Sports Florida, and a Feature Reporter for the Emmy award winning Miami HEAT broadcasts on Sun Sports. She also writes a blog www.mommyinsports.com, which chronicles her passion for sports and the misadventures of mommyhood. Kristen’s favorite job though is raising her two girls Lila & Emylia. health & Fitness The One “Must Do” Exercise
I
by mike estevez, owner, pinecrest fitness
f I had to choose one “must do” exercise for any adult or teen to regularly perform to improve and maintain good overall health, it would be the push-up. Performing push-ups on a regular basis has many benefits. The push-up works so many different muscle groups in the body including chest, arms, shoulders, back, abs, and even legs and glutes (those are the muscles you sit on all day). Besides improving posture, balance, and cardiovascular health, push-ups have other benefits as well. They include: better core/trunk stabilization which will help prevent or relieve back issues, which many people suffer from due to weak core strength. Push-ups have also shown to increase metabolism, burning excess calories resulting in weight loss. Muscular strength increases, as well as muscular endurance, which is beneficial for any sport or lifestyle. Performing push-ups will improve density in bone mass, helping fight off osteoporosis and bone loss, which starts to occur after the age of 30. Weight bearing exercises have shown to be the number one preventative treatment for osteoporosis. The traditional floor push-up can be contraindicated in people with severe osteoporosis, as full body weight can be dangerous to a very weak bone structure. There are ways to perform the push-up using much less weight bearing methods. Some examples would be against a wall, against a flat surface or bar, or even using the opening of a door. There are many variations of push-ups that utilize different hand positions, elbow placement, equipment, handles, steps, bands, suspension devices, stability, and medicine and BOSU® balls. Most are very beneficial, and can be done almost anywhere. Simply find a spot, stay flat, keep your core from sagging, and don’t let your butt get too high. Many push-ups are performed with either the elbows flared out, so the body is in a “T” position, or with the elbows close to the body. Both are beneficial, but many studies show that the closer the elbows are to the body, the more the muscles in the arms get activated, and less stress is applied to the rotator cuff. The push-up is a very challenging exercise for most people and can cause damage if not performed properly or in the right situation. The push-up is not an easy exercise to start, which is why I excluded children in my opening remarks. When I train preteens, overweight teens, and many overweight adults, I have found it best to stay away from the push-up in the beginning. The push-up requires you to start in the plank position, and then push and lower yourself, stabilizing your body weight in a relatively flat position. Many times this is impossible for some young and overweight children, and even for many adults. When a child/pre-teen cannot perform one push-up it can be very damaging to their self esteem and confidence. Starting them off with simple dumbbell presses and planks are a great way to begin and see fast results. Push-ups are never to be performed on an indoor cycle or Spin® bike, as studies and simple biomechanics prove this to be useless, and actually reduce power. Push-ups are also contraindicated for pregnant women, as to avoid risk of trauma to the unborn baby. travel news A Romantic’s Itinerary For Mobile Bay
When It’s Time To Sell…
CALL MIGUEL!
I
by debbie martinez
t’s a secret. You would never think of running away to Mobile Bay for a romantic interlude. But trust me when I tell you, upon your return, you will have many words to describe your visit and disappointing won’t be one of them. Take an early flight into Mobile and head straight to Moe’s Original BBQ; a true Southern soul food experience, complete with a game of corn hole while you wait for their famous pulled pork sandwich. A word of caution though, you cannot eat just one piece of their cornbread. From there, let Craig Roberts give you the best and funniest tour of historic Mobile. This is not your run of the mill tour, and guaranteed by the end, you will be asking him to meet you at Callaghan’s Irish Social Club for a pint. Situated in one of Mobile’s most historic areas, Callaghan’s offers great live music and awesome burgers. No romantic getaway is complete without a spa treatment (or two). Pamper yourselves at the Battle House Renaissance, which boasts a top-notch spa. After leaving your kinks and stress on the table, head over to Wintzell’s Oyster House; a fun happening place where Miss Pinky will tell you that their seafood gumbo is so good, “It’ll make you slap your momma.” Their oysters come every which way but Sunday and their signature libation, Dragon Drink, will make you wonder how you never made it to Mobile before now. Last stop for the day, Grand Hotel Marriott Resort, lies 29 minutes out of Mobile in Fairhope. Built in 1847, it is a AAA Four Diamond Award hotel that just oozes Southern hospitality. Once checked in, grab a drink and settle in one of their oversized wicker chairs by the fire-pit and take in the moon over Mobile Bay. Good night, sweet dreams. Saturday is a new day for exploring. There are so many activities to choose from. You can join up with Two Wheel Tours and pedal through historic Mobile, tour the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park or visit Gulf Quest, an interactive maritime museum. Not to be missed is the two-hour tour of the Lower Delta with Five Rivers Delta Safaris. They also will take you out on a guided canoe or kayak tour if you are more actively inclined. Leave some time at the end of your day to walk around the quaint town of Fairhope and duck inside a few antique shops and art galleries. Back at the hotel, a very intimate evening awaits as you are led to a private arbor to dine a deux. This is the ultimate in romance and can be arranged by the staff at the Marriott Grand. Sleeping in on Sunday can wait until you are back home. Starting your last day with brunch at the hotel is an absolute must. Sitting by the big bay windows and looking out across the sparkling water makes you wish for one more day. Word of caution #2: the bread pudding will set you back a size. Not to worry about indulging in all that fabulous food because you will be spending the remaining hours walking around Bellingrath Gardens. There is so much quiet and solitude on this 65-acre estate garden. One area of the estate is more beautiful than the other; the water features, the chapel, pathways, the home itself, the beauty of the blooms and the flower draped wooden bridge transports you back to a more genteel time. Alas, as they say, “All good things must end,” but your stay in Mobile Bay will leave you with some very special memories. Shh…it’s our secret. Therapeutic Laser for Pets
T
by Dr. Marta Sanchez Emden
o many of us, the first thing that comes to mind when we hear someone mention laser beams is the lightsaber Luke Skywalker used to defend the galaxy in the Star Wars movies. Fast forward about 35 years and the use of surgical and therapeutic lasers beams are now the next big development in Veterinary Medicine. Therapeutic laser, or low level laser (LLL), is a revolutionary and relatively new modality within the field of animal rehabilitation. It was approved by the FDA for animals in 2002. However, it’s been used in animals for many years in other parts of the world. Randomized controlled trials and literature reviews support the effectiveness of this type of laser in animals. Laser therapy uses a beam of laser light to penetrate tissues without damaging them. It induces a cellular response known as photobiomodulation that leads to pain control, reduction of inflammation and increase in the speed of tissue healing. Laser therapy has shown to improve tendon lesions, improve chronic arthritis and induce healing in bone fractures. It has also been shown to be effective in healing peripheral nerve injuries and spinal cord lesions. Therapeutic lasers should never be administered directly to tumors or the skeletal growth plates of young animals. Therapeutic laser machines come in a wide range of powers. The most common machines fit into either Class 3b or Class 4. While both are very effective, Class 4 lasers is the latest, top of the line unit. The laser light is delivered into the affected tissue through a non invasive probe similar to an ultrasound probe. Animals receiving treatment will experience nothing more than a gentle, warm massaging sensation at the targeted site. Most treatments take a matter of minutes. Each treatment protocol is uniquely formulated by a rehabilitation veterinarian for each individual patient and their condition. Treatments for various afflictions vary in frequency, complexity and cost. In our practice, the therapeutic laser is one of the most used treatment modality for patients with arthritis and those with spinal cord injuries. We use it on a daily basis for surgical wounds, traumatic wounds, abscesses, ear infections, topical dermatitis (“hot spots”), cystitis, and many other inflammatory conditions. We have successfully administered laser therapy to a number of patients at Zoo Miami including elephants, giraffes and koala bears. Laser therapy represents a surgery-free, drug-free, non-invasive alternative for pain and inflammation reduction, especially for pets that are not surgical candidates and unable to take pain medications due to their adverse effects or concurrent disease. Laser therapy is an effective complementary modality within an Integrative Medicine plan. Seek a veterinarian certified in animal rehabilitation with the acquired skills and experience necessary for laser therapy to create a plan of treatment for your pet’s condition. Dr Marta Sanchez-Emden is founder of Animal Health and Rehab Center in South Miami. She is a certified in both, Veterinary Acupuncture and Veterinary Rehabilitation. She has been practicing in Miami for over 20 years and is featured regularly on national TV and radio shows including Despierta America and Tu Desayuno Alegre (Univision) educating the public on pet topics. She is the author of the book “Chihuahuas: How to Be Your Dog’s Best Friend” available in two languages at amazon.com. See more at animalhealthrehab.com. safety & SEcurity “Security Awareness Instinct” By Luis Ortega
This is Part I of a three-part Series dedicated to how we should prepare for, how to behave during, and how to prevent security incidents. Part I deals with Personal Security; Part II will encompass Residential and Workplace Security; and Part III will cover Cyber Security.
Personal Security
According to the U.S. State Department, the most serious obstacle to personal security is an attitude of complacency or fatalism. “It can’t happen to me” and “if it’s going to happen, it’s going to happen,” are dangerous ways of thinking! “Security Awareness” should be more than a term - it should be a phrase taught to children, and a way of enjoying a safer life. We think that it should be an instinct, the Security Awareness Instinct; and when it comes to security, knowledge is your best defense. A Security Awareness Instinct is the habitual ability to recognize risks and make automatic decisions that reduce it, regardless of location, situation, technology, or other safeguards. The following tips are designed to be readily remembered and easily applied to awaken and reinforce the natural self-preservation instinct in all of us.

In general…
Always be alert to your surroundings and the people around you. Alertness leads to awareness. Keep your cell phone charged and activated. Spare battery devices are now widely available. Tell family or associates your destination and times of departure and arrival. Do not put your name and address on keys. If you lose your keys, change your locks. Have a small light on your key ring.
On the street...
Whenever possible, use the buddy system and travel with a friend. There is safety in numbers. Remain in well-lit areas as much as you can. Walk confidently, at a steady pace, and facing traffic. Make eye contact with people when walking, but do not respond to conversation from strangers on the street. If you carry a purse, hold it securely between your arm and body, and carry valuable items in your front pockets or under clothing. If you feel you are in danger, don’t be afraid to run or scream. Sometimes throwing your wallet in the opposite direction of an escape route is all you need to ward off a mugger while you escape.
If an attack seems imminent...
Stay calm and get ready to defend yourself, remembering the main objective is to escape the attack and call for help. If necessary, be swift, violent, loud, hard, and targeted. Vulnerable areas on an attacker are eyes, nose, throat, knees, and groin. Use your own body parts as weapons: hands, elbows, knees, and forehead. If you carry defensive tools like pepper spray, stun guns, or firearms, ensure that you have received professional instruction where applicable, have practiced, and do know how to use them. Remember that lethal force in self-defense is justified only to prevent your imminent death or great bodily harm. Defense of property, including money, is not a widely accepted legal defense. Finally, when calling 9-1-1, ensure to start with your LOCATION and then follow up with the nature of the emergency. These are just a few of many recommendations to prevent or survive a dynamic critical incident. Being proactive about preparedness, alertness, and speed of action when necessary will increase our chances of survival. Certainly, when it comes to our personal security, we must avoid an attitude of complacency. As we say at SAI, “Stay Alert - Stay Alive!” Luis Ortega is a Certified Firearms Instructor. He owns and operates Security Arms International (SAI), a personal defense store and security consulting firm in Palmetto Bay, Florida. You may reach him at ceo@saiops.com. debbie does divorce The Trick? Change Perspective
I
Level 3 – Grade 5
by debbie martinez, Divorce coach
n the years that I have had my practice and divorce columns, very few men have walked over my threshold or written asking questions, but it appears the tide has shifted. I have to say I am thrilled about this, as men need to work through their challenges and emotional issues just like women. A couple of brave souls have reached out and here are their questions:
Dear Divorce Coach, I’ve been divorced for 6 months and every time I get an email or see things that remind me of my ex in the house, it reminds me that she’s with someone else and doesn’t want to be with me anymore. I get angry and depressed and feel like I failed since the kids seem happy with her and her new boyfriend. They’re always going on trips and I can’t help but think I should be there on those trips with my kids. How do I get over this? The only way you would have failed is if you stopped being a dad to your children. Let me ask you, would you feel better if your children were miserable when they were with their mom and her new beau? I don’t think so. As a parent, seeing our children embrace the ex’s significant other stings. Ok…down right burns. But the truth is, if we are good parents, we want our children to adjust to the divorce and be happy even if it’s at the cost of our own pain. Now is the time to break away from things you did with your family, and form new traditions and past times just between you and your children. Something only you all share. As far as the constant reminder that she is with someone else, carve out a brand new life for yourself. Immerse yourself in the present instead of the past. There is a reason you both got divorced. Good, bad or indifferent, make peace with it and move on. Remember, my friend, everything does happen for a reason and it’s usually for our good. I would like to know how on earth I am going to be able to make peace with my ex who I despise? She has done nothing but wreak havoc on my entire family. Everyone tells me to let go but it is truly not as easy as it sounds. What’s the trick? You are correct in that people make it sound so easy, but they don’t mean to diminish your feelings by making it sound so simplistic. It may be that they never went through what you are feeling, or perhaps they have but are now so far removed from them that they forgot how they felt at the time. To feel like you cannot move forward because of ill will towards another can be paralyzing, and for that reason I offer up another way to look at this. Quite simply, “Whoever angers you, controls you.” How does it feel to be controlled by your ex, because that is exactly what is happening here. Yes, she is wreaking havoc on your emotions and those of your children’s. Yes, she is doing everything in her power to make your life miserable, but you are still in control. It is about choosing to make peace with yourself. Letting all this go so you can have peace. Don’t put the focus on making peace with your ex but on making peace within yourself. That is the trick. Once you have peace, you will see that what your ex does no longer affects you, and YOUR life will be better for it. The trick? Change perspective. car care Extended Oil Change Intervals: Convenient For Car Owners But NOT So Friendly For the Engine
M
by M&R AUTO REPAIR
ost people think that their vehicle needs gas and an oil change for maintenance and then they’re good to go! The simple truth is that vehicles are far more complex and have many systems that need servicing, much like the human body. With shorter oil change intervals, other systems and fluids are able to be checked more frequently and save on costly repairs with preventative maintenance. Intervals have gone from 3,000 miles to 10,000 miles on some vehicles. We have seen cars come in low on oil and sludge built up in the engine due to extended oil change intervals. Other fluids and systems that require attention have been neglected, such as the cooling system, brake system, power steering, transmission, differential, starting system, and A/C system. Modern vehicles have been designed to decrease service intervals, but that leaves a lot less room for error. While your maintenance book says you have 5,000 or 10,000 miles until your next service, you could miss a leak in one of your vehicles systems or a clogged filter. With the extended service intervals it is more likely that when a part begins to fail or fluids are compromised, it will be missed until they are symptomatic. On average, people drive 12,000 to 15,000 miles a year, which means you should professionally checking your vehicle 2-3 times a year. Previously, vehicles were maintained at 3,000 mile intervals, which meant professionally checking your vehicle 4-5 times a year. Preventative maintenance would require checking your vehicle more frequently. At the point it triggers a symptom, it is more costly than checking your vehicle on a shorter service interval.
While manufactures have created fluids to last longer, some even labeled “life-time,” the fine print states in normal driving conditions and to inspect levels and conditions. Have you ever received the gas mileage listed from the manufacture for your vehicle? More than likely, the answer is no. The conditions in which most vehicles are driven are not the same optimized conditions as the manufacture laboratories with new fluids and parts. As summer approaches, the warm weather and longer service intervals can wreak havoc on your vehicle if not properly maintained. In South Florida, we enjoy the nice warm weather and sandy beaches, while the battery on our vehicle is getting too hot, the cooling system is tested, and the A/C system is utilized to the max. Don’t wait for your battery to fail at Publix with all your groceries, your cooling system to overheat during the family vacation, or your A/C to stop cooling on the way to an important business meeting. Just like preventative medicine requires your check ups and daily maintenance (i.e. eating right, getting enough sleep, exercising…) your vehicle requires similar attention. Visit our friendly, courteous, and professional staff at M&R Auto Repair for your next service. Have no fear it’s better to see us more than twice a year. A check in time saves more than a dime. Be Safe! Buckle up! Don’t Text and Drive!! M&R Auto Repair has been serving South Florida since April of 1985. Continued from page 22 essential for product penetration. In addition to cell turnover, skin needs to be perpetually exfoliated in order for serums and creams to penetrate at their maximum potential.
WHAT’S SO GREAT ABOUT AN $80 EYE CREAM?
Luxury products are amazing at penetrating deep into the dermal layers of the skin and target the cellular structure. This specifically stimulates the production of collagen as well as Hyaluronic acid, which infuses skin with super-moisture. Therefore, deep penetrating products work due to their molecular structure. The process of creating a serum or cream with micro molecules small enough to penetrate the epidermis and into the dermis is costly. You may not be able to tell the difference between a $100 white cotton t-shirt and a $30 version, however, in the case of skincare, the adage is right: you get what you pay for. You cannot get that micro-molecule, deep-penetration from a drugstore brand, you just can’t.
BE REALISTIC!
Regardless of what product you use on the eye-area, be consistent. But most importantly, be realistic. If you think a product is too good to be true, it probably is. The advancements in skin care, even in just the past decade, are enormous. The skin care technology on the market today will make your skin significantly better in terms of tone, texture, moisture, and the reduction of fine lines. Before choosing an eye cream, consult with a professional to determine your skin’s blueprint. Then, once you choose the products best suited for YOU, apply them (as directed) twice per day: morning and night. The key is to be consistent with your skincare routine, treat your eye skin gently, never pulling or tugging. Remember, the eye skin is like a fragile flower; it needs to be nourished, hydrated, and treated tenderly. Allow your eyes to be as youthful as your soul.

legally speaking Wipe Out Second Mortgages, Avoid Foreclosure and Stay in Your Home
T
By Omar J. Arcia, Esq., Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
housands of homeowners in our community are 20-50% upside-down on their home mortgages and are looking for a way out. Some are frustrated in their attempts to modify their home loans, and others simply choose to give up their home because they don’t know or are unsure of their rights. Wouldn’t it be much easier to save your home if you only had a first mortgage to worry about? Also, since the real estate market is improving, think of all the equity you could build up years from now if you could wipe out your second mortgage or credit line today? For homeowners who have taken out a second mortgage on their home and lines of credit, facing our current economic climate can be particularly challenging. This is especially true if the second mortgage or credit line is about to convert or has converted from an interest only to a principal plus interest payment. Additional liens on your home beyond your initial mortgage, however, can be wiped out through a Chapter 13 personal bankruptcy filing. When mortgage liens are removed from a property during bankruptcy proceedings it is referred to as “stripping” the lien. Many bankruptcy courts permit a second mortgage or line of credit to be extinguished if the total amount owed on the first mortgage exceeds the fair market value of the home. For example, if you owe $200,000 on the first mortgage of your principal residence, and $150,000 on your second mortgage of that same residence, BUT your principal residence is only worth $195,000, the $150,000 second mortgage would be wiped out in a Chapter 13 bankruptcy without any tax consequences. In a Chapter 13 bankruptcy, second mortgages and lines of credit can also be completely eliminated down to the appraised value of the home on investment properties. To qualify, the court will generally require proof that the home is worth less than the amount owed on the first mortgage, which can be established through a certified appraisal that is accepted by the court. In an environment where home prices in most markets have fallen at least 30% or more, many borrowers could qualify for this option. Tax liens and association liens can also be stripped off in Chapter 13 reorganization proceedings to the extent that the lien does not attach to equity in the property. More importantly, if your income level qualifies, you will be able to catch up on any past due mortgage payments through affordable installments spread out over 3-5 years, or even modify your first mortgage through a loss mitigation program offered by South Florida bankruptcy courts. This allows you and your family to stay in your home, and none of your creditors will be able to contact you, harass you with annoying phone calls or proceed with a foreclosure during the bankruptcy. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new consumer-friendly DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home,” available for purchase on our website. If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine you will receive a FREE copy during the appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free consultation, or visit www.arcialawfirm.com for more information.
