IT'S THE SEASON,
Hurricane Season!
W
ITH THE MIAMI HEAT OFFICIALLY SHINING DOWN ON US (AND THE rain taking it’s rightful place in our afternoons), it’s more important than ever to take a moment and remember that summer is all about relaxation. July is the time to slow down, celebrate our country and take a much-needed break from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the year. In fact, the only thing that can break that calm is our age-old South Florida nemesis, the Hurricane. To that end we’ve compiled another annual guide to just about everything you might need to know in order to prepare for the 2017 season.

The physician-recommended cap that’s clinically proven to regrow hair discreetly under a hat is now available for men and women in 3 different models. No need to endure the embarrassment of Cinderella-style headband gadgets or astronaut-type helmets. Capillus laser therapy caps prevent progression of hair loss and regrow thinning hair in a dignified manner. Made in the USA in our corporate headquarters in Miami, the Capillus82 is FDA-CLEARED and has no known adverse side-effects, so you can use it with confidence. Nothing tops it for convenience. Wear it just 30 minutes every other day. Unlike laser comb type devices, Capillus lasers require no effort from the user - making it a preferred choice of doctors worldwide. At $799, the Capillus82 is the best value you can get for the amount of lasers (comb devices are priced at more than 4x as much per laser).

Capillus laser therapy works through the process of photobiomodulation. Just like plants convert light energy to produce oxygen from carbon dioxide, cells on the scalp convert light energy from lasers into chemical energy to restore normal function in hair follicles. If caught on time, photobiomodulation can reverse the process of hair loss in people with androgenetic alopecia by restoring cellular function at the cellular level of the hair follicle, restoring the hair follicle.

A Mission to Cuba
S
OUTH FLORIDA FAMILIES ARE TAKING COMmunity to heart this summer, when they travel to Santiago de Cuba in late July. With the aim of connecting the next generation of Cuban children with their Cuban American counterparts, the families hope to “help the kids gain a sense of self-worth and dignity by showing them the goodwill of our future generations, and ultimately encouraging their newfound faith in God by way of the local Catholic Church.” Spearheading the mission is Cuban Evolution, a nonfor-profit organization founded by Dr. Elsie Miranda whose vision is to inspire change by focusing on the individual rather than the society. One of those ways is via games. In fact, not long ago, the local Catholic Church, Sagrada Familia, began to take shape when they created a community center called “salon de repaso” for their youth group. With the introduction of a single chess set, more children began to come. As the population of children began to increase, so did the population of the Church. Inspired by this revelation, the families hope to connect with the local families via everything from Risk and Checkers to Backgammon and Parcheesi, which have the added benefits of promoting independent and logical thinking, strategy, creativity and imagination.
Additionally, the families would like to leave behind a lasting memory of the children of Miami by building a library of books and DVD’s that can be accessed by all in the parish. Donations can be given via a collection box at Blo Me Away (5966 S Dixie Hwy, South Miami) with funds going towards sports equipment; awards for sports competitions; books & DVD’s, chess games, bibles; rosaries, medical supplies; and shipping costs.

Silver Club Doral EN DORAL LOS AÑOS DORADOS SON “PLATEADOS” POR DANIELA GIAMPAPA-BENDAYAN
C

STORM SURGE ZONES CHANGE. Head to miamidade.gov to check your address.
PETS NEED PROTECTION TOO. The Humane Society recommends keeping all pets with you during a storm and making sure they have an up-to-date ID tag with a current cell phone number.
LOOK UP. Make sure to check for loose shingles and remove all lawn furniture that could fly up and damage your roof.
TREES CAN BE A DANGER DURING A STORM. Take the time now to trim back any that have large, dead branches and those that are too close to your home and could fall and cause damage.
5 SPEAKING OF TREES: Don’t stress over the palms; they are prepared for wind storms. Simply remove any coconuts or large palm seeds.
8
9
GUTTERS should be secured and declogged to prevent water damage.
PHOTOGRAPH ALL VALUABLES in your home and be sure to have a camera charged to take post-storm pics just in case of any damage.
IF YOU DON’T HAVE IMPACT windows make sure to put up shutters. If you don’t have shutters, plywood can be a good option, but could take up to a week of measuring and cutting to put them in place.
11
10 MOSQUITOS ARE STILL AN ISSUE, even after a storm. Walk your property and get rid of any standing water… it’s a perfect breeding ground for the dreaded insects.
15
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE at least a three-day supply of any medications you might need as well as a good amount of batteries and/ or other medical supplies.
CREATE A FAMILY COMMUNICATION PLAN and establish a meet-up location as well as an out-of-state friend or family member to check in with in the case you are separated.

DOCUMENTS ARE THE FIRST thing to get wet and ruined. Make sure you have a safe (and waterproof) space for important docs such as insurance policies, medical records and your pet's veterinary records and always keep copies at a remote location.

6 ACCORDING TO THE EXPERTS at Eric’s Outboard Marine the best place for your boat is hauled out and secured on dry land. Boat owners should also always check their insurance policy, make sure the batteries are charged and the bilge pumps functioning.
REMEMBER THAT PHONE LINES can get jammed pretty fast after a storm. Try texting- texts can often get through easier and won’t tie up phone lines needed by first responders.

STAY AWAY FROM ANY WINDOWSfind a room without windows, and take shelter there. If that is not possible, go into a closet.
HEADING INTO HURRICANE TERRITORY? Be sure to check with the airlines for flight cancellations and call your hotel to make sure there are no evacuations in place.
MANY COMMUNITIES HAVE text or email alerting systems for emergency notifications. To find out what alerts are available in your area, search the Internet with your town, city, or county name and the word “alerts.”

HOSE WHO HAVE LIVED THROUGH A MAJOR HURRICANE (cough, Andrew) know the sense of dread that sets in when you realize you have no viable meal options and Publix is bare shelves for the foreseeable future. That’s why we turned to nutritionist, and Miami-native, Danielle Marks Williamson of Nicklaus Children’s Hospital for a list of healthy foods to keep handy… just in case. TIP: Never underestimate the power of your outdoor grill. Many have a side burner to heat up soups (and coffee!) and anything from pizza dough to defrosted proteins can be thrown on the flames for a quick meal. Just make sure you're stocked up on propane!

3 Steps to Removing an Awning Safely
M
IAMI AWNING AND FLORIDA BUILDING CODE ONLY RECOMMEND TAKING DOWN your awning once a hurricane warning has been issued for your area; meaning that hurricane conditions (sustained winds of 74 mph or higher) are expected somewhere within the warned area within the next 36 hours. Should that be the case, here are a few steps to removing your fabric awning, courtesy of the Miami Awning experts: 1. We recommend cutting all the ropes that attach the fabric awning to the frame, which can be done above the grommets (brass eyelets). The rope will need to be replaced so do not be concerned about saving it. Be careful not to cut the fabric awning. 2. If your awning is attached to your home or building, after you cut the ropes, roll the fabric awning up to the top of the frame, where it meets the wall. Secure it to frame with tie backs or rope, lashing it down around the ends and middle areas where you rolled it up. 3. If you have a freestanding awning, cut the ropes (same as above). Roll the awning up, if possible, while it is still on the frame or slide it off the frame, pull it to the ground and neatly fold or roll it up. Store the fabric indoors. In the event of a hurricane, failure to take these steps may result in damage to the awning frame and possible damage to your home or building. For more information visit miamiawning.com.

City of Doral’s Hurricane Preparedness Tips
H
urricane season is now in full swing and the City of Doral wants to remind everyone that the time to prepare is now! Doral, as well as the rest of the County and State, are in the potential path of hurricanes. Which is why it is imperative that you review your family and business’s plan and hurricane supplies sooner rather than later. With public safety as the City’s utmost priority, all City departments are working diligently to provide the support you need to keep you, your family and your business safe during a state of emergency.
PRE-STORM ACTIVITIES FOR RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES: »» Review your emergency kit. Make sure to have food, water (1 gallon per person per day) and medicine for a minimum of three days. »» Be sure to bring all front yard and backyard decorations, items, and accessories indoors to avoid the possibility of flying projectiles. »» Ensure that hurricane shutters are in good working order and are being maintained regularly. If your home has hurricane panels, make sure all required hardware and materials are easily available and accessible. »» Flooding can be a major concern during a storm. Ensure that all private storm drains are serviced and cleaned out to assist in alleviating standing water in roads and parking lots. Sand Bags are already being prepared and will be made available for Doral residents at Doral Central Park, 72 hours prior to storm (3000 NW 87th Ave). »» Trim your trees weeks, even a couple of months, before the start of hurricane season to avoid having dead branches and pruned landscaping from becoming dangerous objects during a windstorm. »» For business owners in the City, all outdoor seating and tables, along with loose signs and outside storage materials should be brought indoors. »» City Building Department will be available to assist customers with any hurricane permitting and inspection inquiries. For flood information visit www.cityofdoral. com , under the Building tab. »» Ronald Reagan- Doral Senior High School is the assigned hurricane shelter and is located at 8600 NW 107th Avenue in Doral but it does not allow pets. For pets, shelter at the Tamiami Fairgrounds.
POST-STORM ACTIVITIES FOR RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES »» Thirty-five (35) major street intersections in Doral are equipped with portable generator interface devices that allow the hook-up of portable generators for continued operation of traffic signals in case of power outages caused by a hurricane event. »» In the event that your property is damaged during a storm, be aware of unlicensed contractors. Make sure to verify that all potential contractors working on your home are properly licensed, insured, and qualified by the State of Florida, and that all appropriate building permits are obtained. »» The City of Doral has contractors on standby ready to assist with clean-up and debris removal on City public roads.
STAY INFORMED The City of Doral has the goal of keeping the residents and stakeholders informed. City staff uses various platforms to keep the public notified of hurricane emergency alerts. City residents and business owners may sign up to receive Automated Weather Alerts through Doral Alerts. This is free of charge and the application can also be downloaded on your smart phone. DIVIETO RISTORANTE Italia Servida en un Plato POR DANIELA GIAMPAPA-BENDAYAN
D

DR. JOSE RODELGO-BUENO PRINCIPAL, ST. BRENDAN HIGH SCHOOL BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
F
USING EDUCATION AND FAITH, ST. BRENDAN has more than four decades of history in Miami, moving from a seminary high school to the coeducational private school it is now in the mid-1970s. Today, the school is in somewhat of a rebirth, drawing students to it’s innovative Academy- and project-based learning and embarking on a massive renovation that will launch into Phase 2 this coming January. At the head of all of this is their Principal, Dr. Jose Rodelgo-Bueno, who joined the school as a geometry, Spanish and Italian teacher in 2010. “We have developed a revolutionary co-ed and faith centered pedagogical model based on Academies and innovation,” says Dr. Rodelgo-Bueno. “This model provides the 21st Century education needed for students to understand their lives and thrive in our global and complex world.” Here’s what he had to say about the future of learning, the importance of STEM and the pride he takes in seeing his students voice their vision.
WHAT SETS YOUR SCHOOL APART FROM OTHER PRIVATE RELIGIOUS SCHOOLS IN SOUTH FLORIDA?
We have found a new way of Catholic education: a way to be at the forefront of the educational field and, at the same time, preserve the best of our tradition –faith, culture, values, love for the family, etc. We have developed a revolutionary co-ed and faith centered pedagogical model based on Academies and innovation. This model provides the 21st Century education needed for students to understand their lives and thrive in our global and complex world.
WHY DID YOU IMPLEMENT THE ACADEMIES INTO YOUR CURRICULUM AND HOW HAS IT IMPACTED THE STUDENTS?
We implemented the Academies because we wanted our students to be college- and career- ready but above all, because we are interested not only in what they learn, but also in the people they become. Our Academies and their great variety of elective courses and educational opportunities help students become aware of their talents, skills and likes. This style of education also helps our students take ownership of their learning and faith and become true men and women.
TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT THE SPECIAL EXPERIENCES STUDENTS WHO CHOOSE AN ACADEMY PATH WILL HAVE.
Our Academies are essentially schools within our school. They work very much like college majors, with students enrolling in one of four schools that focus on specific areas: Medical Sciences, Law & Global Business, STEM, and Visual & Performing Arts. In every Academy, students form a small learning community and share similar goals. Each Academy has a specialized curriculum, electives, clubs, field trips, invitational competitions, service

learning opportunities, as well as its own partnerships with universities, companies, hospitals and other institutions that provide research and internship opportunities. Finally, students in an Academy may enroll in the AP Capstone Program and graduate with our school diploma and, at the same time, with the College Board AP Capstone diploma. This greatly improves the student's’ college acceptance and college scholarship opportunities.
STEM IS A HUGE BUZZWORD IN EDUCATION THESE DAYS, HOW ARE YOU APPROACHING STEM OR STEAM AND HOW DO YOU SEE IT EVOLVING OVER THE NEXT 5 YEARS?
STEM is one of the most important fields of study in our school. In fact, we are STEM certified by AdvancEDSACS/CASI. We have devoted our new building to innovation and we have equipped it with state of the art instructional resources. We know that our students will devote their lives to careers that still do not exist. For this reason, our approach is interdisciplinary. We not only combine art with STEM, but all subjects and areas of learning. The goal is that they not only create their own apps and inventions, but also they are inspired to design their own ideas and provide innovative solutions to complex problems.
YOU RECENTLY EMBARKED ON A MAJOR RENOVATION, HOW IS THAT GOING AND WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT?
Our Innovation Center, a $9 million state of the art building completed last summer, provides a place for our Academies to thrive and for our vision to be seen. Last year, Miami-Dade County also approved our master plan for the redevelopment of the entire campus. The ground breaking for the second phase is scheduled for January 2018, to include a brand new track with a lacrosse/ football/soccer field inside, a new baseball and softball field and some renovations in our existing buildings. Further developments will expand our gym, renew our swimming pool, expand our cafeteria, construct a new classroom building and create an auditorium for the performing arts.
I KNOW THERE IS ALSO A FOCUS ON PROJECT-BASED LEARNING (PBL). WHAT DOES THAT MEAN TO YOU AND YOUR FACULTY AND WHAT ARE SOME EXAMPLES?
PBL allows students to be more engaged in their learning and acquire content through the projects they create. In these projects they display what they have learned. Projects involve real world application of knowledge, so that students are facilitated to relate instruction to their personal lives and assimilate it. Our students have been able to create and maintain for weeks three different microsystems inside numerous recycled two-liter bottles. We also had students in our swimming pool walking on water using the devices they created. However, PBL is only one of the strategies of our inquiry and interdisciplinary- based learning. The class is more about asking questions than about answering them. It is about argumentative and logical reasoning, strategic thinking, learning how to collect and interpret data and test hypotheses, idea generating activities, group inquiry and peer learning, acquiring social and emotional intelligence, decision-making strategies, and connecting faith, learning, and their real lives. The City Never Tasted so Delicious BY DANIELA GIAMPAPA-BENDAYAN
ASTE OF DORAL IS A PROGRAM CREATED BY the Doral Chamber of Commerce aimed at promoting accessibility to Doral’s magnificent and untapped food scene. Taste of Doral is a fine dining program that includes specially priced lunches and dinners at Doral’s finest restaurants.
T
in Taste of Doral offer to the consumer something to make a great difference. For example, these premises can offer discounts on their menu of up to 25%. Also, they provide a menu specially designed for Taste of Doral, which includes leading varieties on their menu. Another option is the free drinks that accompany the dish that the diner has chosen.
As an appetizer to Taste of Doral, in June 22 was carried out Progressive Food Tour at CityPlace Doral. It was designed to allow participants to taste the delicacies that the restaurants have to offer. Guests checked-in at CineBistro for a meet-and-greet along with a complementary drink, then headed to Ice Box to sample some appetizers and a beverage. The tour continued in the Rusty
The 6th Annual Taste of Doral places Doral’s vast gastronomical landscape on South Florida’s culinary map, and runs July 1st through July 31st, 2017. In a city that is bursting at the seams with more than 200 restaurants, Taste of Doral features special prix fixe lunch and dinner options at Doral’s finest restaurants. Not only does Taste of Doral boost business for area restaurants during the usually slow summer month of July, but it also encourages consumers to explore restaurants that they have yet to discover. Emmanuel Sarmiento, President and CEO of Doral Chamber of Commerce, said that participant restaurants

The tour ended in Cabo Flats, where guests got a drink and their famous complimentary chips and salsa. “Our goal is to introduce the amazing food culture we have in Doral to both locals and travelers alike,” said Emmanuel Sarmiento. “We wanted to create a tour where working colleagues could join fresh off work and have a great time!” Bon Appetit! He is a very friendly dog who loves to be around children and really enjoys playing with them. Polo strongly dislikes the shower and will run away whenever it’s time to take one. His favorite thing to do is go to the dog park and find new friends to play with.

THERE'S ALWAYS SOMETHING FUN GOING ON AT THE DORAL CENTER FOR ORTHODONTICS!
P
BY LAUREN WEINTRAUB
atients at the Doral Center for Orthodontics and the Miami Center for Orthodontics have long watched as their smiles transform with treatment. Now their friends on Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook can see their progress too. A new photo booth – complete with props that change with the seasons – allows patients to pose for digital photos that they then can decorate with digital stickers and post online. “It’s something nice for them to do along the way,” says Dr. Mayling Molina, president of the family-centered practice. “Every time they come to the office, they can actually chart their progress. They can see how they started and how they’re changing, and it’s a great way for them to connect with other people who are going through the same thing.” A testament to the care the patients receive from the team, they often ask the assistants to pose for the photos alongside them in the booth. It’s because the doctors at the practice – Drs. Molina, Enrique Gallo and Carlos Fernandez-Feo – and the staff take a patient-centered approach to every aspect of care. Patients typically return to the office every six weeks for treatment, which lasts anywhere from one to three years. “They come in for so long that they build a bond with the assistants and the whole team,” Molina says. “Many patients request a certain assistant because they already have a bond with that assistant.” When Dr. Gallo and Dr. Molina bring in a new team member to their team, they make sure that this person shares their same values and believes. "We look for people who are passionate about their work. Someone who cares about the well-being of another person and who feels accomplished and rewarded by the positive changes that are made in our patients’ self-confidence and the beautiful smiles that we create." Says Dr. Molina. The whole team is involved in making sure that their patient's Orthodontic experience is fun. "Our goal is to make a lasting, positive impression on our patients and ensure this process is as easy and enjoyable as possible." Says Dr. Gallo. Along the way, they get to know the patients, celebrating their milestones. Birthdays involve balloons, cupcakes and singing. When it’s time for the braces to come off, they rejoice together.
