IT'S THE SEASON,
Hurricane Season!
W
ITH THE MIAMI HEAT OFFICIALLY SHINING DOWN ON US (AND THE rain taking it’s rightful place in our afternoons), it’s more important than ever to take a moment and remember that summer is all about relaxation. July is the time to slow down, celebrate our country and take a much-needed break from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the year. In fact, the only thing that can break that calm is our age-old South Florida nemesis, the Hurricane. To that end we’ve compiled another annual guide to just about everything you might need to know in order to prepare for the 2017 season. Elsewhere in the issue we’re looking at yet another local philanthropist, Rita Lombardo, who took giving to a new level by establishing the SHUZZ organization, a non-profit that provides new shoes to children in need around the world. This month we also give you a head start on the school year with some great tips from local teachers and students on how to keep up your kids studies over the summer. Don't forget to connect with us via social media. You can find us on Twitter (@FloridaVillager), Facebook (The Florida Villager), and Instagram (@thefloridavillager). You can also find us online at TheFloridaVillager.com.

PAUL MCCARTNEY: ONE ON ONE
Toba Khedoori explores the artist’s nuanced and powerful body of work. Khedoori frequently depicts architectural forms from distanced perspectives, rendering commonplace objects and spaces familiar yet decontextualized. In recent years, she has transitioned from paper to canvas, producing smaller-scale works that hover between representation and abstraction.. The exhibition is the first major museum presentation of Khedoori’s new paintings and her first survey in fifteen years. Perez Art Museum Miami; pamm.org
The exhibition explores the topic through eyewitness, first-person storytelling, historical footage, documentary photography, artifacts, and Hurricane Andrew-inspired art work, with the goal of connecting visitors to the emotion of the moment. The Museum is also offering educational programs for the general public and school audiences. Altogether, the exhibition and programming engages visitors not only in learning about the storm’s impact on Miami, but also in remembering and commemorating this milestone in our community’s history. historymiami.org
Algo de un- tal Shakespeare is a contemporary, mischievous romp through the Shakespearean cosmos. It’s an invitation from Sara Pinet, Adrián Vázquez and the Tristes Tigres team to spend a hilarious evening enjoying a lively show and appreciate a fun (and at times silly) point of view of some of the works of this wonderful author. Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts; arshtcenter.org
The Paul McCartney live experience is everything any music lover could ever want from a rock show—and so much more: Nearly three hours worth of the greatest moments from the last 50 years of music, dozens of songs that have formed the soundtracks of our lives. The Beatles played their final concert 1966, and even one performance broadcast live into Space! Featuring Paul’s band of the last 10+ years – Paul “Wix” Wickens (keyboards), Brian Ray(bass/ guitar), Rusty Anderson(guitar) and Abe Laboriel Jr (drums) – the show is never anything short of life-changing. In his newest play, Carbonell Award-winning playwright Michael McKeever explores the history of the world’s most famous painting, including Leonardo da Vinci’s meeting of Senora del Giocondo (Mona Lisa) and his masterful creation of her indelible countenance. This historical, funny and intriguing new piece presents highlights throughout the painting’s infamous past, including her vandalism, her theft, her journey to America (at the request of First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy) and the various places she spent her storied life span, including hanging in Napoleon’s bedroom, before her final resting place at the Louvre. Claudio and Sandra know that their children possess unique attributes that set them apart from the average person. They are special. It's true that they have behavior problems, don’t make friends easily and are seldom invited to birthday parties, but so what? It's a monstrous world out there and the job of a good parent is to protect them from it. Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts; arshtcenter.org
Making use of theater's power to communicate and acknowledging the need to know more about this cognitive disorder, the play explores the complex situation of those who live with Alzheimer's disease. It provides the opportunity to reflect on and reinforce and refresh the relationship between those who suffer from the devastating disease and their day-to-day environment. CORAL GABLES BANS SINGLE-USE CARRY OUT PLASTIC BAGS
Coral Gables
NEW RESIDENT Miami-based, luxury women’s intimate apparel and swimwear brand Eberjey has opened its latest location at the Shops at Merrick Park.
Last month, the City of Coral Gables became the first city in Florida to prohibit the use of single-use carry out plastic bags. Retail establishments and restaurants will have the benefit of a 12-month educational campaign to get familiar with the new law and use their current plastic bags inventory with no citations issued until May 2018 (only warnings). The prohibition is effective immediately with full enforcement action taken, for any entity or individual who has been issued a special event permit. So what does this mean to residents of Coral Gables? Although the City of Coral Gables encourages everyone to use reusable, recyclable or compostable alternatives other than plastic bags, the use of single-use carryout plastic bags by residents is not regulated in the ordinance; residents may continue using these bags as garbage bags, to pick up their pet’s waste, or if they repurpose plastic bags to bring lunch to work.

Capillus laser therapy works through the process of photobiomodulation. Just like plants convert light energy to produce oxygen from carbon dioxide, cells on the scalp convert light energy from lasers into chemical energy to restore normal function in hair follicles. If caught on time, photobiomodulation can reverse the process of hair loss in people with androgenetic alopecia by restoring cellular function at the cellular level of the hair follicle, restoring the hair follicle.

A Mission to Cuba
S
OUTH FLORIDA FAMILIES ARE TAKING COMmunity to heart this summer, when they travel to Santiago de Cuba in late July. With the aim of connecting the next generation of Cuban children with their Cuban American counterparts, the families hope to “help the kids gain a sense of self-worth and dignity by showing them the goodwill of our future generations, and ultimately encouraging their newfound faith in God by way of the local Catholic Church.” Spearheading the mission is Cuban Evolution, a nonfor-profit organization founded by Dr. Elsie Miranda whose vision is to inspire change by focusing on the individual rather than the society. One of those ways is via games. In fact, not long ago, the local Catholic Church, Sagrada Familia, began to take shape when they created a community center called “salon de repaso” for their youth group. With the introduction of a single chess set, more children began to come. As the population of children began to increase, so did the population of the Church. Inspired by this revelation, the families hope to connect with the local families via everything from Risk and Checkers to Backgammon and Parcheesi, which have the added benefits of promoting independent and logical thinking, strategy, creativity
and imagination. Additionally, the families would like to leave behind a lasting memory of the children of Miami by building a library of books and DVD’s that can be accessed by all in the parish. Donations can be given via a collection box at Blo Me Away (5966 S Dixie Hwy) with funds going towards sports equipment; awards for sports competitions; books & DVD’s, chess games, bibles; rosaries, medical supplies; and shipping costs.

T H E PH I L A N T H R O PI ST A person who seeks to promote the welfare of others, especially by the generous donation of money to good causes.
Rita Lombardo BACKGROUND:
Though her daily life sees her helming a successful West Palm Beach advertising and marketing agency, Rita Lombardo is no stranger to community service, having taken her place on multiple local nonprofit boards and helped with fundraising for causes across the board. But it was the 2011 earthquake in Haiti that spurred her to create her own organization after the Delray resident found herself wanting to do more than just write a check. “I found a flight online and purchased 300 pairs of new shoes,” says Lombardo. “Upon arriving in Haiti, I traveled to a orphanage and gave away the shoes to all the children in need. In returning to Florida, I realized how great a need for shoes is.” SHUZZ was born.

ABOUT SHUZZ
SHUZZ (pronounced “shoes”) is a nonprofit dedicated to providing shoes to children in poverty-stricken areas around the world. The organization distributes thousands of shoes free of charge to children – regardless of race, religion, class or any other criteria. They partner with other organizations around the world to assess areas of need and choose countries where they find scarcity and poverty of basic needs of survival. Past donations have gone to the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Guatemala, Africa and the United States, among others. “SHUZZ has grown immensely over the past seven years, with hundreds of volunteers, strong community partnerships and donors and the support of so many individuals around the globe,” says Lombardo. “I’m most proud of hitting our milestone of giving over 100,000+ pairs of new shoes to children in need both here in the U.S. and internationally.”

SHUZZ SHUZZ.ORG THE DETAILS
Because of their dedication to donating 100 percent of funds to their programs (which include a back to school effort, medical outreach for healthy feet and youth athletic shoes) they depend entirely on volunteers to run their efforts, meaning there are endless opportunities to get involved according to Lombardo. “Volunteers are an important part of our mission,” she says. “Opportunities are available throughout the year; from helping out in the office, to event planning, the Back-2-School Program, Youth Athletic Program, and International Shoe Distribution Trips. [On these trips] volunteers can be hands-on, giving new shoes to children in low-income, poverty-stricken areas around the world.”
BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
THE FUTURE
“SHUZZ goal is to continue to grow and build more relationships with people that have a passion to help others,” says Lombardo of the organization’s future. “We are on track to hit our next milestone of giving away more than 200,000 pairs of new shoes.” They’re also gearing up for their annual fashion show this September at the Seminole Casino Coconut Creek. The event will feature a 40-ft. red-carpet for all guests, a cocktail party and VIP reception sponsored by Celebrity Cruises, Silent & Live Auctions, followed by the SHUZZ signature fashion show from designer Gomez-Gracia wearing Jimmy Choo.
SHUZZ has a 100 percent model that I stay true to. All of the money donated to the organization goes directly toward providing new shoes to children who need them most in the world.”

Miami-Dade Public Schools Announces FSA Results
T
HE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION released results from the Spring 2017 administration of the Florida Standards Assessments (FSA) in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics, the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) 2.0 Science, and the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards (NGSSS) End-of-Course (EOC) assessments. Student-level ELA Reading scores for Grade 3 students were released previously to facilitate promotion decisions. The results include all students tested and do not represent the groupings that will be used by the State for accountability purposes. “As proven by the results, Miami-Dade County Public Schools is at the forefront of education in Florida,” said Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho. “This is cause for celebration by everyone in our community, as it is a reflection of the dedication of so many: students, educators, and parents whose efforts result in our students continuing to outperform students from other large urban districts, and in some cases, outpacing the state.” Highlights of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) students’ results follow: »» Miami-Dade County Public Schools showed continued success in 2017 across all statewide achievement tests as compared to the state and other large districts. »» In both English language arts and mathematics, the percentage

On the social studies EOC assessments, growth exceeded the state and other large districts, with six-percentage points growth in Civics and five percentage points in U.S. History. On the FSA English Language Arts (ELA) assessment, the percentage of M-DCPS students scoring in Levels 3 or above met or exceeded the percentages of students statewide in all Grades 3 through 10. The most growth was seen in Grades 3, 4, and 7, with a four percentage point increase on the FSA ELA assessment from 2016 to 2017. M-DCPS students’ growth in ELA met or exceeded that of their counterparts in the state in all but two grade levels. On the FSA Mathematics assessment, the percentage of students scoring in Levels 3 or above exceeded the state in Grades 3 through 6. M-DCPS students’ growth in mathematics met or exceeded that of students statewide in Grades 4 through 7. The percentage of students scoring in Level 1 on the FSA

A New Approach to Early Childhood Education
P
INECREST HAS A NEW ADDITION TO ITS CHILDHOOD EDUcation offerings with the recent relocation of Grow With Us Academy to the neighborhood. The decade-old center, the only preschool and kindergarten in South Florida endorsed by Loving Guidance and Dr. Becky Bailey (the founder of Conscious Discipline) relocated first from a small workshop-driven space near The Falls to a schoolhouse on Sunset Drive before outgrowing that space as well. Today, they’ve taken up residence on more than an acre of space in Pinecrest, expanding their Conscious Discipline-based school to both part- and full-time programs for children two-year-old through Kindergarten as well as professional and parent workshops, parent and child classes, early childhood transition programs and afterschool learning programs. Grow With Us was founded by Mindy Becker, a Loving Guidance Associate and National Conscious Discipline Certified Instructor who has presented both in the United States and internationally. All teachers and administrators are trained in Conscious Discipline, a research-based self-regulation program that combines social and emotional learning with discipline and guidance. Built on a foundation of current brain research, the School Family is constructed from safety, connection and problem-solving. This approach scientifically and practically empowers both adults and the children in their care to transform conflicts into opportunities to learn critical life skills. Research has shown when a child’s emotional needs are met first, learning can then occur at its highest potential. With the help of high qualified and trained educators, children are guided, with love and encouragement, to learn skills to function
from their highest brain state. Once the child is functioning from their highest brain state, our focus is on Language and Literacy Skills, Math and Science concepts, learning through play/problem solving, increasing attention and cooperation, and creating a foundation for a love of learning. “Grow With Us Academy is a leading school modeling the best in Early Childhood Education and Conscious Discipline,” says CD founder Dr. Bailey. At Grow With Us Academy, a child is offered opportunities to build on their selfworth, increase self-control, and develop social competence during their daily routine. STORM SURGE ZONES CHANGE. Head to miamidade.gov to check your address.
PETS NEED PROTECTION TOO. The Humane Society recommends keeping all pets with you during a storm and making sure they have an up-to-date ID tag with a current cell phone number.
LOOK UP. Make sure to check for loose shingles and remove all lawn furniture that could fly up and damage your roof.
TREES CAN BE A DANGER DURING A STORM. Take the time now to trim back any that have large, dead branches and those that are too close to your home and could fall and cause damage.
5 SPEAKING OF TREES: Don’t stress over the palms; they are prepared for wind storms. Simply remove any coconuts or large palm seeds.
8
9
GUTTERS should be secured and declogged to prevent water damage.
PHOTOGRAPH ALL VALUABLES in your home and be sure to have a camera charged to take post-storm pics just in case of any damage.
IF YOU DON’T HAVE IMPACT windows make sure to put up shutters. If you don’t have shutters, plywood can be a good option, but could take up to a week of measuring and cutting to put them in place.
11
10 MOSQUITOS ARE STILL AN ISSUE, even after a storm. Walk your property and get rid of any standing water… it’s a perfect breeding ground for the dreaded insects.
15
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE at least a three-day supply of any medications you might need as well as a good amount of batteries and/ or other medical supplies.
CREATE A FAMILY COMMUNICATION PLAN and establish a meet-up location as well as an out-of-state friend or family member to check in with in the case you are separated.

6 ACCORDING TO THE EXPERTS at Eric’s Outboard Marine the best place for your boat is hauled out and secured on dry land. Boat owners should also always check their insurance policy, make sure the batteries are charged and the bilge pumps functioning.
REMEMBER THAT PHONE LINES can get jammed pretty fast after a storm. Try texting- texts can often get through easier and won’t tie up phone lines needed by first responders.

STAY AWAY FROM ANY WINDOWSfind a room without windows, and take shelter there. If that is not possible, go into a closet.
HEADING INTO HURRICANE TERRITORY? Be sure to check with the airlines for flight cancellations and call your hotel to make sure there are no evacuations in place.
MANY COMMUNITIES HAVE text or email alerting systems for emergency notifications. To find out what alerts are available in your area, search the Internet with your town, city, or county name and the word “alerts.”

HOSE WHO HAVE LIVED THROUGH A MAJOR HURRICANE (cough, Andrew) know the sense of dread that sets in when you realize you have no viable meal options and Publix is bare shelves for the foreseeable future. That’s why we turned to nutritionist, and Miami-native, Danielle Marks Williamson of Nicklaus Children’s Hospital for a list of healthy foods to keep handy… just in case. TIP: Never underestimate the power of your outdoor grill. Many have a side burner to heat up soups (and coffee!) and anything from pizza dough to defrosted proteins can be thrown on the flames for a quick meal. Just make sure you're stocked up on propane!

3 Steps to Removing an Awning Safely
M
IAMI AWNING AND FLORIDA BUILDING CODE ONLY RECOMMEND TAKING DOWN your awning once a hurricane warning has been issued for your area; meaning that hurricane conditions (sustained winds of 74 mph or higher) are expected somewhere within the warned area within the next 36 hours. Should that be the case, here are a few steps to removing your fabric awning, courtesy of the Miami Awning experts: 1. We recommend cutting all the ropes that attach the fabric awning to the frame, which can be done above the grommets (brass eyelets). The rope will need to be replaced so do not be concerned about saving it. Be careful not to cut the fabric awning. 2. If your awning is attached to your home or building, after you cut the ropes, roll the fabric awning up to the top of the frame, where it meets the wall. Secure it to frame with tie backs or rope, lashing it down around the ends and middle areas where you rolled it up. 3. If you have a freestanding awning, cut the ropes (same as above). Roll the awning up, if possible, while it is still on the frame or slide it off the frame, pull it to the ground and neatly fold or roll it up. Store the fabric indoors. In the event of a hurricane, failure to take these steps may result in damage to the awning frame and possible damage to your home or building. For more information visit miamiawning.com.

OUTH FLORIDA’S NEWEST HOSPITAL IS The Miami Medical Center. Created by leading South Florida physicians, Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, and NueHealth (a privately held U.S. company that develops, manages and owns clinically integrated networks and healthcare facilities across the nation), South Florida’s newest hospital is bringing 175,000-square-foot, 67- beds and 27 clinical specialties to the community. Located in the Blue Lagoon area, adjacent to the MIA Airport, The Miami Medical Center began operations last year, and has been building a growing domestic and international patient base along with a solid managed care network. Boasting more than 27 clinical specialties and a birthing center, the facility integrates treatment protocols that leverage the latest surgical, communications and operational technologies, and has built a medical and nursing team with best in class procedural outcomes. The physician-owners of The Miami Medical Center - a carefully selected group of surgeons, obstetricians and other specialists who lead their respective fields in South Florida - have medical privileges to treat their patients at the new facility and play an active and direct role in the management and patient outcomes of the hospital and are represented on the hospital board. “Our vision entails greater influence by the physicians

In addition to more than 27 specialties, with a strong emphasis in orthopedics, spine, OBGYN and the precision of robotic surgery, the hospital operates a full-service diagnostic imaging department, pharmacy and laboratory. “More and more, when looking for a hospital, patients prefer a complete healthcare experience that extends beyond excellent medical care,” said Jeffrey S. HPV and Your Mouth
Y
OU MAY ASK, WHY IS MY DENTIST TALKING ABOUT HPV? ARE YOU AWARE that the incidence of cancers of the head and neck, including the oral cavity, are on the rise? This is, at least in part, due to the infection of Human Papillomavirus, or HPV. HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States and has traditionally been most closely associated with cervical cancer. However, there are now more non-cervical HPV cancers than cervical HPV cancers. The virus is known to be transmitted through intimate contact. While technically not known, it is believed to be possible to contract the virus through kissing alone. It is estimated that 45 percent of the U.S. population currently is “infected” with HPV. While most of these individuals are asymptomatic, there is a 22 times higher chance of developing a head and neck cancer associated with exposure to the HPV virus. Due to its association with cervical cancers, it was previously more of a concern for women. However, statistics show the greatest increase in incidence now is in men being affected. Important in dispelling some of the stigma associated with HPV, is to state that infection is not due to sexual promiscuity. Studies have shown a large number of affected individuals having as few as one or two sexual partners during their lifetime.

What can you do? Unlike the pap smear for cervical cancer, there are currently no screening tests that are clinically useful for the prediction or early detection of head and neck cancers due to HPV. Regular dental exams and consultation with an ENT (Otolaryngologist) or an oral surgeon (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery) when something suspicious presents itself will help in early detection. Any persistent changes in voice, swallowing, or masses in the throat or neck should be followed up with an appropriate medical professional. The good news: When diagnosed early, HPV related cancers of the head and neck generally have a better prognosis than those (same cancers) that test negative for HPV. As far as prevention, the HPV vaccine Gardasil, protects against most strains of HPV associated with cervical and non-cervical cancers. The vaccine is, according to the FDA and the AMA, indicated for boys and girls, men and women ages 9-26. At this time, it is not ‘covered’ for those individuals older or younger; but you should consult with your doctor as there seems to be convincing evidence that there is no age in which the vaccine is not protective against the virus. Participating in the Head and Neck Cancer Clinical Interest Group and the Head and Neck Tumor Board at Baptist Hospital and The Miami Cancer Institute has allowed the doctors at Smile Miami to keep abreast of the latest in Head and Neck Cancer diagnosis and treatment. Timely referrals and communication back and forth with specialists facilitates patient treatment and, hopefully, improves outcomes.

How to Live a Healthy Lifestyle (Part 1)
W
E’VE ALL HEARD IT BEFORE…THAT PHRASE 'HEALTHY LIFESTYLE' HAS been bandied about for years, but what exactly does it mean and how do we achieve it? Everyone knows the obvious traits displayed by someone who takes care of themselves and is considered “healthy.” He or she doesn't smoke, they maintain a stable weight, they eat plenty of fruits, vegetables and fiber and, of course, they exercise on a regular basis. Alas, there are also additional variables involved. A healthy person tends to manage their stress better, seemingly always gets a good night’s sleep, doesn’t overindulge or doesn't drink too much, they’re active. Basically, a healthy person adheres to the old adage, everything in moderation. It seems like a heavy burden having to juggle and maintain all those variables in our hustle bustle world; but the good news is, you don't have to make drastic changes. In fact, drastic changes almost always lead to failure. The real secret is to implement small changes – take the stairs, add fruit to your cereal, have an extra glass of water, skip dessert, avoid fried foods, or maybe just simply say no to seconds. There are numerous things you can do to create a healthier lifestyle, but rule number one is always just move. And truthfully, that doesn’t necessarily mean going to the gym, exercise is movement.
Here's Why You Need To Move More: Whether it's a family bike ride or running a 10k, activity is considered exercise and when you move more than normal, it counts. It's terrific if you can spend time in the gym - meaning you're in there sweating, you’re in the “zone” reaching your target heart rate, and/or doing something that strengthens your body - but it doesn't always have to be that way. Moderate physical activities such as gardening, washing the car, walking the dog, or even just playing outside with the kids can make a real difference.
The Benefits of Moving More The great thing about moving is that just a few minutes a day can have lasting benefits, many of which you may not even be aware of. Just some of the benefits include: »» Reduces the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes »» Improves joint stability »» Increases and improves range of motion »» Helps maintain flexibility as you age »» Maintains bone mass »» Prevents osteoporosis and fractures »» Improves mood and reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression »» Enhances self-esteem »» Improves memory in aging populations »» Reduces stress So isn’t it time you got off that couch, pushed yourself away from your desk, grabbed the remote and shut off the TV, or logged off Facebook or Instagram. Truthfully, even if you opt for small incremental changes and focus on being healthy to start, you will experience some pretty significant health benefits. For now, work on mastering some of the healthy habits mentioned and before you turn your focus to weight loss, (next article!). Go ahead; get started on that road to a long, healthy, and enjoyable life. DR. JOSE RODELGO-BUENO PRINCIPAL, ST. BRENDAN HIGH SCHOOL BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
F
USING EDUCATION AND FAITH, ST. BRENDAN has more than four decades of history in Miami, moving from a seminary high school to the coeducational private school it is now in the mid-1970s. Today, the school is in somewhat of a rebirth, drawing students to it’s innovative Academy- and project-based learning and embarking on a massive renovation that will launch into Phase 2 this coming January. At the head of all of this is their Principal, Dr. Jose Rodelgo-Bueno, who joined the school as a geometry, Spanish and Italian teacher in 2010. “We have developed a revolutionary co-ed and faith centered pedagogical model based on Academies and innovation,” says Dr. Rodelgo-Bueno. “This model provides the 21st Century education needed for students to understand their lives and thrive in our global and complex world.” Here’s what he had to say about the future of learning, the importance of STEM and the pride he takes in seeing his students voice their vision.
WHAT SETS YOUR SCHOOL APART FROM OTHER PRIVATE RELIGIOUS SCHOOLS IN SOUTH FLORIDA?
We have found a new way of Catholic education: a way to be at the forefront of the educational field and, at the same time, preserve the best of our tradition –faith, culture, values, love for the family, etc. We have developed a revolutionary co-ed and faith centered pedagogical model based on Academies and innovation. This model provides the 21st Century education needed for students to understand their lives and thrive in our global and complex world.
WHY DID YOU IMPLEMENT THE ACADEMIES INTO YOUR CURRICULUM AND HOW HAS IT IMPACTED THE STUDENTS?
We implemented the Academies because we wanted our students to be college- and career- ready but above all, because we are interested not only in what they learn, but also in the people they become. Our Academies and their great variety of elective courses and educational opportunities help students become aware of their talents, skills and likes. This style of education also helps our students take ownership of their learning and faith and become true men and women.
TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT THE SPECIAL EXPERIENCES STUDENTS WHO CHOOSE AN ACADEMY PATH WILL HAVE.
Our Academies are essentially schools within our school. They work very much like college majors, with students enrolling in one of four schools that focus on specific areas: Medical Sciences, Law & Global Business, STEM, and Visual & Performing Arts. In every Academy, students form a small learning community and share similar goals. Each Academy has a specialized curriculum, electives, clubs, field trips, invitational competitions, service

learning opportunities, as well as its own partnerships with universities, companies, hospitals and other institutions that provide research and internship opportunities. Finally, students in an Academy may enroll in the AP Capstone Program and graduate with our school diploma and, at the same time, with the College Board AP Capstone diploma. This greatly improves the student's’ college acceptance and college scholarship opportunities.
STEM IS A HUGE BUZZWORD IN EDUCATION THESE DAYS, HOW ARE YOU APPROACHING STEM OR STEAM AND HOW DO YOU SEE IT EVOLVING OVER THE NEXT 5 YEARS?
STEM is one of the most important fields of study in our school. In fact, we are STEM certified by AdvancEDSACS/CASI. We have devoted our new building to innovation and we have equipped it with state of the art instructional resources. We know that our students will devote their lives to careers that still do not exist. For this reason, our approach is interdisciplinary. We not only combine art with STEM, but all subjects and areas of learning. The goal is that they not only create their own apps and inventions, but also they are inspired to design their own ideas and provide innovative solutions to complex problems.
YOU RECENTLY EMBARKED ON A MAJOR RENOVATION, HOW IS THAT GOING AND WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT?
Our Innovation Center, a $9 million state of the art building completed last summer, provides a place for our Academies to thrive and for our vision to be seen. Last year, Miami-Dade County also approved our master plan for the redevelopment of the entire campus. The ground breaking for the second phase is scheduled for January 2018, to include a brand new track with a lacrosse/ football/soccer field inside, a new baseball and softball field and some renovations in our existing buildings. Further developments will expand our gym, renew our swimming pool, expand our cafeteria, construct a new classroom building and create an auditorium for the performing arts.
I KNOW THERE IS ALSO A FOCUS ON PROJECT-BASED LEARNING (PBL). WHAT DOES THAT MEAN TO YOU AND YOUR FACULTY AND WHAT ARE SOME EXAMPLES?
PBL allows students to be more engaged in their learning and acquire content through the projects they create. In these projects they display what they have learned. Projects involve real world application of knowledge, so that students are facilitated to relate instruction to their personal lives and assimilate it. Our students have been able to create and maintain for weeks three different microsystems inside numerous recycled two-liter bottles. We also had students in our swimming pool walking on water using the devices they created. However, PBL is only one of the strategies of our inquiry and interdisciplinary- based learning. The class is more about asking questions than about answering them. It is about argumentative and logical reasoning, strategic thinking, learning how to collect and interpret data and test hypotheses, idea generating activities, group inquiry and peer learning, acquiring social and emotional intelligence, decision-making strategies, and connecting faith, learning, and their real lives. NOTHER SUMMER IS HERE AND DOG OWNERS ARE BEING BOMBARDED with news about a new flu virus infecting dogs everywhere in the United States. This has created much confusion, and a good amount of misinformation. So, let’s deal with the confusion by reviewing the facts. There are two strains of the Canine Influenza Virus (CIV), the older and better known H3N8, and the newer and more contagious H3N2. It is the latter that is believed to have transferred from birds to dogs in Asia and brought to this country through infected dogs, resulting in an outbreak in Chicago in 2015. Since then, the virus has spread, affecting dogs in almost every single state. In recent months, since May 2017, we have been witnessing a second outbreak. A special characteristic of this new H3N2 virus is that it is highly contagious; every single dog that is exposed will become infected. Another characteristic of H3N2 is that the severity of the infection is unpredictable. Twenty percent of infected dogs will show no symptoms, and most dogs will show cold-like symptoms, while others will have a rapidly progressing disease that could lead to hemorrhagic pneumonia and, without timely treatment, possibly death. The CIV is special in that infected dogs will be contagious to other dogs for a long time, almost a full month, regardless of if they are showing symptoms or not. There are reports of the CIV crossing species and affecting cats. So, what are the symptoms? The dog will have general symptoms of respiratory disease; very similar to the “Kennel Cough” disease (Bordetella/Parainfluenza complex for which dogs are vaccinated annually). The symptoms of CIV infection include coughing, sneezing, lethargy, fever, lack of appetite and mucous discharging from the nose. If the dog’s condition quickly gets worse or is coughing blood, there is a possibility that he/she might be infected with the CIV and not with the better known Kennel Cough. Dogs can be infected through the air (sneeze or cough from infected dog), by licking or sniffing other dogs, or through contact with infected objects such as food bowls and cloth. The Canine Flu virus infection has been seen in locations shared by multiple dogs such as kennels, grooming places, dog parks, dog shows/sport competitions, dog training classes, highway resting stops, and common green areas in apartment complexes. The CIV can be easily diagnosed through a blood or nasal mucosa test. Treatment is supportive, requiring antibiotic therapy. For dogs with severe disease, hospitalization for more aggressive therapy might be required. The best way to avoid the CIV infection is through prevention. If your dog lifestyle puts him/her at risk of contracting the disease, a vaccine will provide protection from the two variations of the Canine Flu Virus (H3N8 and H3N2). Two boosters are required. The vaccine will minimize the symptoms, and will prevent shedding of the virus. Also, it is recommended to avoid big dog crowds if possible, and to wash your hands when touching multiple dogs. Lastly, if your dog is coughing, do not take him/her to areas where there are other dogs that might get infected. Early diagnosis and treatment of the CIV increases the potential of a good outcome. If your dog is showing respiratory symptoms, a comprehensive exam by your veterinarian, and proper diagnostics will identify the cause and will allow early treatment.

While there are different types of peels with different components ranging from mild to deep, in my opinion several milder peels are better than one deep one. To me these peels, preserve your epidermis, yet result in excellent benefits to your skin. Mild peels will exfoliate superficially, while medium peels will reach the dermis with potential excessive peeling and downtime. So which peel should you use on your skin? Lactic, glycolic, TCA? There are many different peels used to treat different conditions, but they each have a place and time. The ideal one for you, as well as the frequency, can be determined during a consultation. Make sure you discuss any allergies you may have and other lifestyle factors. After the peel, sun protection, and high grade products with antioxidants are a must. After care is key to achieving optimal results. Just remember, you may experience to different degrees redness, dryness, sun sensitivity, and some scabbing, swelling and peeling.
