IT'S THE SEASON,
Hurricane Season!
W
ITH THE MIAMI HEAT OFFICIALLY SHINING DOWN ON US (AND THE rain taking it’s rightful place in our afternoons), it’s more important than ever to take a moment and remember that summer is all about relaxation. July is the time to slow down, celebrate our country and take a muchneeded break from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the year. In fact, the only thing that can break that calm is our age-old South Florida nemesis, the Hurricane. To that end we’ve compiled another annual guide to just about everything you might need to know in order to prepare for the 2017 season. Elsewhere in the issue we’re looking at yet another local philanthropist, Rita Lombardo, who took giving to a new level by establishing the SHUZZ organization, a non-profit that provides new shoes to children in need around the world. This month we also give you a head start on the school year with some great tips from local teachers and students on how to keep up your kids studies over the summer. Don't forget to connect with us via social media. You can find us on Twitter (@FloridaVillager), Facebook (The Florida Villager), and Instagram (@thefloridavillager). You can also find us online at TheFloridaVillager.com. Sincerely,
Dan Bastien

PAUL MCCARTNEY: ONE ON ONE Toba Khedoori explores the artist’s nuanced and powerful body of work. Khedoori frequently depicts architectural forms from distanced perspectives, rendering commonplace objects and spaces familiar yet decontextualized. In recent years, she has transitioned from paper to canvas, producing smaller-scale works that hover between representation and abstraction.. The exhibition is the first major museum presentation of Khedoori’s new paintings and her first survey in fifteen years. Perez Art Museum Miami; pamm.org
Algo de un- tal Shakespeare is a contemporary, mischievous romp through the Shakespearean cosmos. It’s an invitation from Sara Pinet, Adrián Vázquez and the Tristes Tigres team to spend a hilarious evening enjoying a lively show and appreciate a fun (and at times silly) point of view of some of the works of this wonderful author. Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts; arshtcenter.org
The Paul McCartney live experience is everything any music lover could ever want from a rock show—and so much more: Nearly three hours worth of the greatest moments from the last 50 years of music, dozens of songs that have formed the soundtracks of our lives. The Beatles played their final concert 1966, and even one performance broadcast live into Space! Featuring Paul’s band of the last 10+ years – Paul “Wix” Wickens (keyboards), Brian Ray(bass/ guitar), Rusty Anderson(guitar) and Abe Laboriel Jr (drums) – the show is never anything short of life-changing. Pinecrest Gardens Awarded NEA Grant
N
ATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS (NEA) AWARDED Pinecrest Gardens $10,000 to help fund the 2017 – 2018 Jazz Series and the Gen-Next Jam mentorship program. Jazz greats that include Nestor Torres, Brian Lynch, Spyro Gyra and NEA Jazz Master Elis Marsalis will arrive a day before their performance to jam with a core group of high school students participating in the jazz magnet program at New World School of the Arts. Funding from NEA will also support the continued expansion of South Motors Jazz at Pinecrest Gardens, a seven- part jazz series that remains Pinecrest Gardens’ most popular and artistically exceptional performance series. “NEA awarded us a generous grant for this initiative that will mark its seventh anniversary with the third year of an explosive expansion that will bring an exceptional caliber of internationally celebrated artists,” said Pinecrest Gardens Director Alana Perez. “From the earliest days of jazz, grassroots mentoring was part of its oral tradition—far exceeding matters of pedagogy.” NEA approved more than $82 million to fund local arts projects across the country in NEA’s second major funding announcement for fiscal year 2017. “The arts reflect the vision, energy, and talent of America’s artists and arts organizations,” said NEA Chairman Jane Chu. “The National Endowment for the Arts is proud to support organizations such as Pinecrest Gardens, in serving their communities by providing excellent and accessible arts experiences.”

The physician-recommended cap that’s clinically proven to regrow hair discreetly under a hat is now available for men and women in 3 different models. No need to endure the embarrassment of Cinderella-style headband gadgets or astronaut-type helmets. Capillus laser therapy caps prevent progression of hair loss and regrow thinning hair in a dignified manner. Made in the USA in our corporate headquarters in Miami, the Capillus82 is FDA-CLEARED and has no known adverse side-effects, so you can use it with confidence. Nothing tops it for convenience. Wear it just 30 minutes every other day. Unlike laser comb type devices, Capillus lasers require no effort from the user - making it a preferred choice of doctors worldwide. At $799, the Capillus82 is the best value you can get for the amount of lasers (comb devices are priced at more than 4x as much per laser).

Capillus laser therapy works through the process of photobiomodulation. Just like plants convert light energy to produce oxygen from carbon dioxide, cells on the scalp convert light energy from lasers into chemical energy to restore normal function in hair follicles. If caught on time, photobiomodulation can reverse the process of hair loss in people with androgenetic alopecia by restoring cellular function at the cellular level of the hair follicle, restoring the hair follicle.

T H E PH I L A N T H R O PI ST A person who seeks to promote the welfare of others, especially by the generous donation of money to good causes.
Rita Lombardo BACKGROUND:
Though her daily life sees her helming a successful West Palm Beach advertising and marketing agency, Rita Lombardo is no stranger to community service, having taken her place on multiple local nonprofit boards and helped with fundraising for causes across the board. But it was the 2011 earthquake in Haiti that spurred her to create her own organization after the Delray resident found herself wanting to do more than just write a check. “I found a flight online and purchased 300 pairs of new shoes,” says Lombardo. “Upon arriving in Haiti, I traveled to a orphanage and gave away the shoes to all the children in need. In returning to Florida, I realized how great a need for shoes is.” SHUZZ was born.

ABOUT SHUZZ
SHUZZ (pronounced “shoes”) is a nonprofit dedicated to providing shoes to children in poverty-stricken areas around the world. The organization distributes thousands of shoes free of charge to children – regardless of race, religion, class or any other criteria. They partner with other organizations around the world to assess areas of need and choose countries where they find scarcity and poverty of basic needs of survival. Past donations have gone to the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Guatemala, Africa and the United States, among others. “SHUZZ has grown immensely over the past seven years, with hundreds of volunteers, strong community partnerships and donors and the support of so many individuals around the globe,” says Lombardo. “I’m most proud of hitting our milestone of giving over 100,000+ pairs of new shoes to children in need both here in the U.S. and internationally.”
07.2017
SHUZZ SHUZZ.ORG THE DETAILS
Because of their dedication to donating 100 percent of funds to their programs (which include a back to school effort, medical outreach for healthy feet and youth athletic shoes) they depend entirely on volunteers to run their efforts, meaning there are endless opportunities to get involved according to Lombardo. “Volunteers are an important part of our mission,” she says. “Opportunities are available throughout the year; from helping out in the office, to event planning, the Back-2-School Program, Youth Athletic Program, and International Shoe Distribution Trips. [On these trips] volunteers can be hands-on, giving new shoes to children in low-income, poverty-stricken areas around the world.”
BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
THE FUTURE
“SHUZZ goal is to continue to grow and build more relationships with people that have a passion to help others,” says Lombardo of the organization’s future. “We are on track to hit our next milestone of giving away more than 200,000 pairs of new shoes.” They’re also gearing up for their annual fashion show this September at the Seminole Casino Coconut Creek. The event will feature a 40-ft. red-carpet for all guests, a cocktail party and VIP reception sponsored by Celebrity Cruises, Silent & Live Auctions, followed by the SHUZZ signature fashion show from designer Gomez-Gracia wearing Jimmy Choo.
SHUZZ has a 100 percent model that I stay true to. All of the money donated to the organization goes directly toward providing new shoes to children who need them most in the world.”

EVER SLEEP PAST 9:00, THE WORLD STARTS AT 9:00,” IS THE EXPERT advice from Miami Palmetto Senior High school’s college counselor Mr. Harry Neremberg. Summer is not only a time to decompress and recharge but, for high school students, should be a time to branch out and spend time doing things that they otherwise could not be doing during the school year. A successful summer is many times wasted inside playing video games. Instead, students who hope to add items to their resumes should capitalize on the wealth of free time granted during the summer months. Enrolling in a course at the local community college is a popular choice for many students who want to get ahead academically. However, if studying all summer is not for you then getting a job, starting or continuing a community service project, or taking advantage of community activities may be a more promising option.

Summer gives students the freedom to focus their attention and time on something other than what is required within the school year. Taking courses that interest them but may not be available at their own schools is one reason many students enjoy the dual enrollment programs offered at local colleges. Not only do these courses open opportunities to get ahead, but they are a way for students to explore possible future academic interests. In addition, summer jobs are a great way to make extra money, facilitate the development of leadership qualities, and build their college resumes. As for community involvement and service, summer is the perfect time to expand or create service projects within the community. Focusing fully on a project and kicking it into high gear during the summer is the perfect way to help the community and bring a project to the next level. The main takeaway for students this summer is to not sleep your way through the opportunities. Capitalize on the extra time. Find a balance between having fun and participating in activities that ensure your future success. Summer is a time to explore new interests or build upon past activities bringing them to a new degree. Wake up early, be productive, and do not sleep away the precious time you could use to prepare for the future. Sabrina Garcia is an incoming senior at Miami Palmetto Senior High School.

ummer is here and so is hurricane season, which began June 1st and runs through November 30th. Please make sure that you have the appropriate home and property insurance. Do not wait for the next flood to purchase insurance protection as there is a 30-day waiting period before National Flood Insurance Program coverage takes effect. The combination of low spots, heavy rainfall, and rising sea levels, can result in flood waters that can cover an extensive area up to several inches deep with little warning. The Pinecrest Building and Planning Department can help you determine if your property is located in a flood zone. Flood maps and flood protection references are available for your use at the department. Staff will also meet with you for an onsite flood hazard review and will provide tips based on your property’s unique characteristics. For more information, please call the Building and Planning Department at 305-234-2121 or visitpinecrest-fl.gov/BPD. inally. The Council took a big step forward regarding transforming Franjo Road to a Main Street that will be fitting for Palmetto Bay. This occurred at the Special Council Meeting held on Tuesday, June 20. The Council (along with the public) heard presentations form the top three bidders competing for the Roadways and Complete Infrastructure Improvements - Franjo Road Project. There will be at least 2 public workshops as well as a public hearing before the village council, thanks to Councilmember Larissa Seigel Lara who suggested this specific language in our resolution. Yes, as always, your voice (and your participation) matters! This project will greatly enhance greatly Franjo Road. There will be a Main Street design that provides for pedestrian and bicyclist safety. There will be significant landscaping. This project will not use our village property taxes. Funding for this project is $10,245,000 – yes 10 million and will be taken from the following: • $7,500,000 from the GOB County Grant • $1,700,000 from Special Revenue Funds – Street Sign Bond • $ 945,000 (up to) from Capital Improvement Project Re-allocation; and • $ 500,000 from our village CITT Allocation Our goal is completion of this project in 16 months. Please keep up with all the events, meetings and ongoing public works projects going on in our village through the official village website: www.palmettobay-fl.gov. I also keep up on issues through my blog found at www.eugeneflinn.com. My direct e-mail is eflinn@palmettobay-fl.gov..

STORM SURGE ZONES CHANGE. Head to miamidade.gov to check your address.
PETS NEED PROTECTION TOO. The Humane Society recommends keeping all pets with you during a storm and making sure they have an up-to-date ID tag with a current cell phone number.
LOOK UP. Make sure to check for loose shingles and remove all lawn furniture that could fly up and damage your roof.
TREES CAN BE A DANGER DURING A STORM. Take the time now to trim back any that have large, dead branches and those that are too close to your home and could fall and cause damage.
5 SPEAKING OF TREES: Don’t stress over the palms; they are prepared for wind storms. Simply remove any coconuts or large palm seeds.
8
9
GUTTERS should be secured and declogged to prevent water damage.
PHOTOGRAPH ALL VALUABLES in your home and be sure to have a camera charged to take post-storm pics just in case of any damage.
IF YOU DON’T HAVE IMPACT windows make sure to put up shutters. If you don’t have shutters, plywood can be a good option, but could take up to a week of measuring and cutting to put them in place.
11
10 MOSQUITOS ARE STILL AN ISSUE, even after a storm. Walk your property and get rid of any standing water… it’s a perfect breeding ground for the dreaded insects.
15
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE at least a three-day supply of any medications you might need as well as a good amount of batteries and/ or other medical supplies.

REMEMBER THAT PHONE LINES can get jammed pretty fast after a storm. Try texting- texts can often get through easier and won’t tie up phone lines needed by first responders.

HOSE WHO HAVE LIVED THROUGH A MAJOR HURRICANE (cough, Andrew) know the sense of dread that sets in when you realize you have no viable meal options and Publix is bare shelves for the foreseeable future. That’s why we turned to nutritionist, and Miami-native, Danielle Marks Williamson of Nicklaus Children’s Hospital for a list of healthy foods to keep handy… just in case. TIP: Never underestimate the power of your outdoor grill. Many have a side burner to heat up soups (and coffee!) and anything from pizza dough to defrosted proteins can be thrown on the flames for a quick meal. Just make sure you're stocked up on propane!

3 Steps to Removing an Awning Safely
M
IAMI AWNING AND FLORIDA BUILDING CODE ONLY RECOMMEND TAKING DOWN your awning once a hurricane warning has been issued for your area; meaning that hurricane conditions (sustained winds of 74 mph or higher) are expected somewhere within the warned area within the next 36 hours. Should that be the case, here are a few steps to removing your fabric awning, courtesy of the Miami Awning experts: 1. We recommend cutting all the ropes that attach the fabric awning to the frame, which can be done above the grommets (brass eyelets). The rope will need to be replaced so do not be concerned about saving it. Be careful not to cut the fabric awning. 2. If your awning is attached to your home or building, after you cut the ropes, roll the fabric awning up to the top of the frame, where it meets the wall. Secure it to frame with tie backs or rope, lashing it down around the ends and middle areas where you rolled it up. 3. If you have a freestanding awning, cut the ropes (same as above). Roll the awning up, if possible, while it is still on the frame or slide it off the frame, pull it to the ground and neatly fold or roll it up. Store the fabric indoors. In the event of a hurricane, failure to take these steps may result in damage to the awning frame and possible damage to your home or building. For more information visit miamiawning.com.

America, Miami Looks Good on Thee!
I
T’S OFFICIAL, WE HAVE A NORMAL MARKET IN OUR AREA. THERE ARE BUYERS that are borrowing money to buy their homes, putting down-payments from 5-25 percent or more, downsizing, upsizing, buying for the first time, folks moving to senior living facilities, and an inventory that is sufficient to meet the demand for the next four to five months. This reflects single family homes, from Palmetto Bay to Coral Gables, including, Pinecrest, The Falls and South Miami. The average days on market are just under 80. There is a slight appreciation year-over-year of 3-5 percent on the property values. An interesting outcome is that we’re seeing many more Americans moving to our area. Corporate executives from Atlanta, Minneapolis, New York, Tampa, Boulder to name a few of the origin cities of buyers that we’re working with now. They work in healthcare, television, air conditioner sales, protein retail stores and luxury brand retail sales. A diverse selection in service industries which bring gainful employment to our community. The condo market is a bird of a different feather. Here we have a surplus in inventory, however, it is offset by a healthy number of sales. Still, the average days on market for condos in Miami is just under 200. There are new condos being delivered in the downtown area, Edgewater district, Coral Gables, Doral and more which are driving prices downward for existing buildings. In this segment, we’re still seeing international buyers paying cash for their investments and buying more than one condo at a time. There are also professionals, downsizers and first-time home buyers purchasing in this market. A very good time to look at this market if you’re thinking of getting a condo and considering an urban lifestyle. Walk to…everything that you need. The continuing trend is for pedestrian friendly neighborhoods. In that regard Coral Gables, Brickell, Doral and Edgewater are all developing mini downtowns. Take a stroll down Giralda Avenue and walk over to the Miracle Mile for a sample. Rental rates have been positively affected by the increase in supply, although still high they have settled and seem to be flat. A two-bedroom condo on Brickell can rent for as high as $4,000/month and a one-bedroom for half that much. Multi-family buildings are a hot commodity in the commercial side, benefiting directly from the rental rates in more affordable areas of town. Here the investors are coming from all over the map, but, especially New York. The overall population growth favors our housing market and promises a stable appreciation in the foreseeable future. I’ve heard that in Miami we have two seasons, this summer and last summer. We’re in the midst of an uptick in buyer activity driven by families looking to be in the preferred school district, of their choice. This summer, like last summer, brings a different kind of school traffic, no school zone required for this one. Just good inventory is what is needed. If you’re in the market to sell, spruce up the property and make it look good. Buyers are expecting a quality product for the prices that our market bares. Welcome home Americans! Miami is a wonderful place to live in and we hope you’ll like it here with the vast cultural diversity that is inherent in our city.

A Mission to Cuba
S
OUTH FLORIDA FAMILIES ARE TAKING COMmunity to heart this summer, when they travel to Santiago de Cuba in late July. With the aim of connecting the next generation of Cuban children with their Cuban American counterparts, the families hope to “help the kids gain a sense of self-worth and dignity by showing them the goodwill of our future generations, and ultimately encouraging their newfound faith in God by way of the local Catholic Church.” Spearheading the mission is Cuban Evolution, a nonfor-profit organization founded by Dr. Elsie Miranda whose vision is to inspire change by focusing on the individual rather than the society. One of those ways is via games. In fact, not long ago, the local Catholic Church, Sagrada Familia, began to take shape when they created a community center called “salon de repaso” for their youth group. With the introduction of a single chess set, more children began to come. As the population of children began to increase, so did the population of the Church. Inspired by this revelation, the families hope to connect with the local families via everything from Risk and Checkers to Backgammon and Parcheesi, which have the added benefits of promoting independent and logical thinking, strategy, creativity
and imagination. Additionally, the families would like to leave behind a lasting memory of the children of Miami by building a library of books and DVD’s that can be accessed by all in the parish. Donations can be given via a collection box at Blo Me Away (5966 S Dixie Hwy) with funds going towards sports equipment; awards for sports competitions; books & DVD’s, chess games, bibles; rosaries, medical supplies; and shipping costs.

T’S IS FRIDAY NIGHT. YOUR SON WANTS TO JOIN THE BAND AND YOU WERE supposed to stop at the local music store all week and check out prices. The deadline is Monday. You just ran out of time this week. What do you do? Some people would go to the internet and search for the musical instrument. Some people may even purchase the instrument online, pay the outrageous shipping costs, and hope it arrives on time for the Monday afternoon band try-out. That is one option. The other option is calling your local music store and getting advice from a musical expert. You will get to discuss the options with a “live”, customer service-focused person!

HPV and Your Mouth
Y
OU MAY ASK, WHY IS MY DENTIST TALKING ABOUT HPV? ARE YOU AWARE that the incidence of cancers of the head and neck, including the oral cavity, are on the rise? This is, at least in part, due to the infection of Human Papillomavirus, or HPV. HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States and has traditionally been most closely associated with cervical cancer. However, there are now more non-cervical HPV cancers than cervical HPV cancers. The virus is known to be transmitted through intimate contact. While technically not known, it is believed to be possible to contract the virus through kissing alone. It is estimated that 45 percent of the U.S. population currently is “infected” with HPV. While most of these individuals are asymptomatic, there is a 22 times higher chance of developing a head and neck cancer associated with exposure to the HPV virus. Due to its association with cervical cancers, it was previously more of a concern for women. However, statistics show the greatest increase in incidence now is in men being affected. Important in dispelling some of the stigma associated with HPV, is to state that infection is not due to sexual promiscuity. Studies have shown a large number of affected individuals having as few as one or two sexual partners during their lifetime.
State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company State Farm Indemnity Company, Bloomington, IL
What can you do? Unlike the pap smear for cervical cancer, there are currently no screening tests that are clinically useful for the prediction or early detection of head and neck cancers due to HPV. Regular dental exams and consultation with an ENT (Otolaryngologist) or an oral surgeon (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery) when something suspicious presents itself will help in early detection. Any persistent changes in voice, swallowing, or masses in the throat or neck should be followed up with an appropriate medical professional. The good news: When diagnosed early, HPV related cancers of the head and neck generally have a better prognosis than those (same cancers) that test negative for HPV. As far as prevention, the HPV vaccine Gardasil, protects against most strains of HPV associated with cervical and non-cervical cancers. The vaccine is, according to the FDA and the AMA, indicated for boys and girls, men and women ages 9-26. At this time, it is not ‘covered’ for those individuals older or younger; but you should consult with your doctor as there seems to be convincing evidence that there is no age in which the vaccine is not protective against the virus. Participating in the Head and Neck Cancer Clinical Interest Group and the Head and Neck Tumor Board at Baptist Hospital and The Miami Cancer Institute has allowed the doctors at Smile Miami to keep abreast of the latest in Head and Neck Cancer diagnosis and treatment. Timely referrals and communication back and forth with specialists facilitates patient treatment and, hopefully, improves outcomes. Smile Miami dentists can be reached at 305-598-1428 and are located at 9840 SW 77 Ave., Suite 201, Miami, FL 33156.

dental health by Dr. Victoria Rothman, Orthhodonist
Straight Talk
WITH DR. VICTORIA ROTHMAN, ORTHODONTIST WHAT IS AN ORTHODONTIST?
An orthodontist is a dentist who received specialty training (2-3 years) after dental school in an accredited orthodontic residency program. While all orthodontists are dentists, only 6% of dentists are orthodontists. Orthodontists limit their scope of work to managing tooth movement (orthodontics) and guiding facial development (dentofacial orthopedics). Orthodontists are uniquely qualified in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of orthodontic problems. My dental degree was obtained at Boston University School of Dental Medicine, and I received my orthodontic specialty training at Nova Southeastern College of Dental Medicine.
WHAT ARE COMMON ORTHODONTIC PROBLEMS REQUIRING A VISIT TO AN ORTHODONTIST? Orthodontic problems include improper bites (malocclusions), tooth irregularity issues (such as crowding or spacing), or jaw issues. These problems may be hereditary in nature, as in the cases of tooth crowding or jaw imbalance. Alternatively they could be the result of environmental factors, such as a thumb sucking habit or dental trauma. And of course, they could be multifactorial in nature. A large part of my practice is focused on proper diagnosis of my patients. Understanding the root cause of my patients’ orthodontic problems allows me to provide the appropriate treatment and also maintain a beautiful result for the long term.
WHAT ARE ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT OPTIONS? Most people think of braces when they consider the orthodontist. It is true that a large majority of patients do need braces to resolve their orthodontic problems; however there are many other orthodontic appliances that are used as an alternative or in conjunction with braces. Some examples are palatal expanders, habit appliances, and retainers. Invisalign and Invisalign Teen are other highly cosmetic treatment options for some patients. At Pinecrest Orthodontics we offer all of the aforementioned as well as other treatment options, and always customized for each patient individually.
HOW LONG DOES ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT LAST? The average length of orthodontic treatment is 22 months, according to the American Association of Orthodontists. However, treatment time is highly variable depending on the type of problem that the patient has. Treatment time typically varies from 12 months to 36 months. Time in treatment does depend on the severity of the patient’s orthodontic problem, but also depends on patient compliance (proper oral hygiene, appointment attendance, and care with diet so as to not break appliances). Patient age is also a factor; orthodontic treatment tends to be quicker in children than adults as their faces and jaws are still growing, allowing for faster tooth movement.
IS THERE AN IDEAL AGE FOR ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT? The simple answer to this question is no. Chronological age is not a factor when deciding whether a patient is a candidate for orthodontic treatment. Healthy teeth can be moved at any age. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children get a check-up with an orthodontist by age seven. Few patients will need to begin treatment that young, but there are some who will benefit from early

A New Vision of Healthcare
S
OUTH FLORIDA’S NEWEST HOSPITAL IS The Miami Medical Center. Created by leading South Florida physicians, Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, and NueHealth (a privately held U.S. company that develops, manages and owns clinically integrated networks and healthcare facilities across the nation), South Florida’s newest hospital is bringing 175,000-square-foot, 67- beds and 27 clinical specialties to the community. Located in the Blue Lagoon area, adjacent to the MIA Airport, The Miami Medical Center began operations last year, and has been building a growing domestic and international patient base along with a solid managed care network. Boasting more than 27 clinical specialties and a birthing center, the facility integrates treatment protocols that leverage the latest surgical, communications and operational technologies, and has built a medical and nursing team with best in class procedural outcomes. The physician-owners of The Miami Medical Center - a carefully selected group of surgeons, obstetricians and other specialists who lead their respective fields in South Florida - have medical privileges to treat their patients at the new facility and play an active and direct role in the management and patient outcomes of the hospital and are represented on the hospital board. “Our vision entails greater influence by the physicians

over clinical practices and a commitment to value,” said Dr. Naaman Abdullah, founding Board Member and Chief of Medical Staff of The Miami Medical Center. In addition to integrating all the elements necessary to provide extraordinary clinical care, The Miami Medical Center focuses on delivering the ultimate patient experience for patients and their companions. While the physicians and clinical teams ensure that all medical needs are attended to with excellence, a patient ambassador, assigned the moment a patient arrives at the hospital, attends to special requests beyond medical care. “Our patients receive safe, appropriate, and effective care, while being welcomed with comforts that positively impact their satisfaction and outcomes.,” says Dr. Abdullah. In addition to more than 27 specialties, with a strong emphasis in orthopedics, spine, OBGYN and the precision of robotic surgery, the hospital operates a full-service diagnostic imaging department, pharmacy and laboratory. “More and more, when looking for a hospital, patients prefer a complete healthcare experience that extends beyond excellent medical care,” said Jeffrey S. Mason, CEO of The Miami Medical Center. “We have created a hospital unlike any other in South Florida where all of our staff is actively engaged in changing healthcare forever, as evidenced in our 5-star patient reviews.”

DeliverLean CEO and Founder,
SCOTT HARRIS
BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
S
UMMER IS HERE… ALONG WITH SHORTS, tank tops and the dreaded bathing suit. But even beyond the aesthetic concerns, healthy eating can help boost lagging summer energy and fight the fatigue that comes along with that Miami heat. South Florida-based DeliverLean is on a mission to help everyone from athletes to couch surfers live their healthiest life, creating and delivering meals that work with each client’s needs and taste.“You don’t need to deprive yourself to eat healthy,” says Founder and CEO Scott Harris. We spoke with Harris to learn more about his inspiration, the DeliverLean process and how jumping into healthy eating is easier than we think.
I READ THAT DL WAS INSPIRED BY WATCHING YOUR EMPLOYEES RETURN POST-LUNCH WITH LOW ENERGY. TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT THAT LIGHTBULB MOMENT AND HOW IT INSPIRED YOU TO LAUNCH DL. At my previous company I was trying to figure out how to make my employees more productive. I realized that lunch hour was the real problem…not so much the actual hour itself, but the 30 minutes before where they figured out where to go or the hour afterward when they adjusted back into their routine. I decided to bring in a chef and make food for them and to feed them small, healthy and more frequent portions. After bringing in the chef I noticed improved morale, more productivity and less absenteeism with my team and this is how the idea for DeliverLean was born.
THERE ARE A LOT OF MEAL DELIVERY OPTIONS OUT THERE THESE DAYS, HOW DOES DL SET ITSELF APART, WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT? DeliverLean sets itself apart from other meal plans because our plans offer variety and versatility. DeliverLean is catered to each individual's needs, and includes plans for people from all walks of life. We have four meal plans to choose from including Paleo (mostly Gluten Free), Classic, Vegetarian, and Vegan. We also can do double protein options. Unlike other meal delivery services, we give our customers the ability to choose their meals from an online portal where they can mix and match between meal plans and get to choose from more than 100 different menu items weekly to create their very own customized menu. Customers can also track their calories and macros to make sure they stay on track with their goals. All menus are approved by an in-house registered dietitian who works on menu correlation with our chefs to ensure that all menus are balanced according to the guidelines of each plan. Our dietitian is also available for customer consultations and customer support. Not to mention, DeliverLean doesn’t compromise on taste - we are both delicious and guilt-free.

WHO IS YOUR TYPICAL CUSTOMER AND WHAT IS YOUR MOST POPULAR PLAN? DeliverLean is an ideal solution for customers who strive to lead a healthier lifestyle, including everyone from busy executives or stay-at-home moms. Our most popular meal plan is our Paleo plan.
WHEN DID YOU LAUNCH ONJUICE AND HOW DOES IT COMPLEMENT THE DL OFFERINGS? OnJuice is our line of cold-pressed organic fruit and vegetable juices. OnJuice was launched in February 2013 and is available in the member portal for our customers to add to their meal plan as a nutritional supplement. It’s a great way to get a boost of phytonutrients into your diet. Customers can also choose to do
a juice cleanse as a part of their DeliverLean meal plan.
THERE'S OBVIOUSLY A LOT OF ATTENTION ON HEALTHY EATING AND "SUMMER BODIES" THESE DAYS. WHAT'S YOUR BEST ADVICE TO SOMEONE LOOKING TO KICKSTART A HEALTHY EATING PLAN? My advice is to jump right in. The longer you wait and the more you put it off, the harder the idea of healthy eating will seem. DeliverLean takes all the guesswork out and make it easy for people to make better lifestyle choices with their diet. With our ready-made plans, eating healthy could not be any easier. We offer convenience – we do all the menu planning, shopping, cooking, and nutritional for you so you can have time to do all the things you love.

Dr. Lianne Pino, Exceptional Vision THERAPY AND LEARNING CENTER
O
NE OUT OF FOUR CHILDREN STRUGGLE WITH reading and learning unnecessarily because of undiagnosed vision problems, making vision therapy a simple and effective tool in helping children (as well as adults) overcome these obstacles to perform everyday tasks more easily and efficiently. But what is vision therapy and how does it work? Dr. Lianne Pino is a Developmental Optometrist dedicated to treating children and adults with visual skill deficiencies and founder of the Exceptional Vision Therapy and Learning Center in Palmetto Bay. Offering treatment on a wide range of conditions, including Amblyopia (or "lazy eye"), Learning-Related Visual Disorders (ADHD, Dyslexia), Dr. Lianne Pino post traumatic rehabilitation (concussions, TBI) and occupational hazards (computer vision syndrome). The center screens patients via a developmental eye exam before creating a program to treat the issue. We spoke with Dr. Pino to learn more about her center, including what to expect from a session, insurance coverage and signs you or your child may be in need of vision therapy.
WHAT IS A VISION THERAPY PROGRAM? Vision therapy sessions include procedures designed to enhance the brain’s ability to control eye alignment, eye movements, focusing ability, and eye teamwork. The visual skills are developed through the use of specialized computer and optical devices, including therapeutic lenses, prisms and filters. Throughout the vision therapy process, a person maximizes their visual skills to become more effective in school, at work, or on the playing field.
WHAT DOES A SESSION ENTAIL? Like many skills, visual skills are developed. Therefore, they can generally be improved through proper therapeutic techniques. In vision therapy, the doctor prescribes visual tasks to be practiced under controlled conditions with the direction of a vision therapy technician. Repetition of these tasks enhances vision by coordinating and improving eye movements, focusing ability, eye teaming, eye-hand coordination and visual information processing skills.
HOW LONG DOES VISION THERAPY TAKE? Weekly office visits are combined with daily home exercises to practice the skills learned in the therapy room. A typical program will last a few months, although the total duration can vary based on the nature and complexity of the condition, the age and motivation of the patient, as wells as other factors.
IS IT COVERED BY INSURANCE? While each insurance plan is different, they do at times reimburse for the evaluation. After the evaluation we can provide you with the information you need to give to your insurance company to help in determining benefits. Our office will assist you as best we can.

Next Stop, Chattanooga, TN
I
T SEEMS I HAVE BEEN TRAVELING AROUND THE SOUTH lately so it makes perfect sense that I would find my way to Chattanooga, TN. When “The New York Times” says it’s one of the top 45 places to go, you go check it out. Let’s start with Adam, known as “That Outdoor Guy.” This guy knows everything outdoors and funny to boot so of course he was the perfect match to show me the outdoors of Chattanooga. We started at Point Park, the National Military Park, where I insisted we crawl out on a ledge to get a spectacular view of the river and city. Our next stop was hang gliding. All I can say is what was I thinking (or drinking) when I signed up for this?! Needless to say, I took one look at people jumping off a cement platform high on a mountaintop in a cocoon looking contraption and we were back in the car devising Plan B. Plan B, much to Adam’s chagrin was visiting Rock City. We had passed it coming up and yes, it is a major tourist stop but I wanted to play tourist. He humored me when I said I wanted to follow the music to see where it led but when we found ourselves at the Beer Garden where people were dancing, that’s where he drew the line. “I hike, not dance,” he said as he strutted off to get a beer. The rest of the day was spent at the Bluff View Art District. We had lunch on the patio at Tony’s Pasta Shop and Trattoria and dipped into Rembrandt’s Coffee House for a European style sweet before heading to the sculpture garden. The next stop was a 1905 revival mansion that houses the Hunter Museum. What a fabulous museum with 100 years of architecture and American art. Night was closing in and once again I could hear music in the distance. Adam rolled his eyes when I casually mentioned I wanted to see where it was coming from. Only this time he was pleasantly surprised when it brought us across a bridge to The Ice Cream Show, an adorable ice cream shop with a patio, swings and a guitarist. Sitting on one of the swings, I felt all was right in the world, Adam was smiling with his big ice cream cone, the stars

were twinkling and I was lovin’ Chattanooga. The next two days I enjoyed some of the local eateries. Pizza at Community Pie, drinks at STIR, a craft beer and ping-pong at Clyde's on Main, which is a gastropub in an old auto repair shop and a wonderful dinner of mussels on the patio of Easy Bistro and Bar. I paddle boarded the Tennessee River compliments of L2 Outside and even came across a little Tom Sawyer looking island where I tied up and explored. Staying at The Chattanoogan was a dream and a great way to end each day. It has won “Best of the Best” multiple times and I can see why. The rooms are well appointed, the staff is wonderful and the spa services will meet anyone’s needs. My last night there I grabbed a glass of wine at their upscale bar, The Foundry and moved outside by the fire pit for my last look at the Chattanooga sky.

Homeowner Preparedness During Storm Season
E
VERY YEAR ON JUNE 1, WE ENTER A NEW STORM SEASON HERE IN SOUTH Florida. This means that if you haven’t already, you should actively prepare your family and home for the worst, as a hurricane can make landfall here at any time. As a homeowner living in the area, you are probably well versed in the issues that arise with homeowners insurance in the case of an incident such as a bad storm or flooding. With rising sea levels and flash flooding a possibility at any time, it’s vitally important to the preservation of your home to be prepared for a storm of any kind, but to also understand how your homeowners insurance policy may or may not protect you and your belongings.
A Law Firm Dedicated to Protecting Florida's Families
Preparing Your Family for the Storm It’s always a good plan to have all of your personal supplies ready to go as hurricane season begins. Even with all the modern technology we have, Mother Nature can be unpredictable and a hurricane can change course at any time. Make sure that you and your family are ready for storm season by having enough fresh water, batteries, canned food, and flashlights for a few days following a storm. Also make sure that as a storm approaches, you have enough gas in your car and that all of your necessary electronics are fully charged. Review your emergency plan with friends and family so that everyone is comfortable with their role if communication is difficult after a storm. The safety of your family is the most important thing to consider during storm season.
Homeowners Insurance Preparation In addition to preparing your family for a storm, you also need to make sure that your home is protected in the event of not only a hurricane, but also for severe storms that may cause flooding and other damage. One of the ways that you can prepare your home is by ensuring that your homeowners insurance is up-to-date. Don’t wait until a storm threatens your home to think about your insurance coverage. Act now. Once a threatening storm forms in the Atlantic, insurance carriers can stop selling or updated policies at any time. Here are some steps you can take to make sure you are getting the most from your homeowners insurance policy. »» Review your policy regularly and make sure you know what’s covered. »» Be sure to understand required reporting and response times and other requirements after the damage has occurred. »» Take photos and video of your property before the storm and after any damage. »» Make an inventory of your personal belonging, preferably with photographs, for documentation in the event of a loss. »» Save photos, video, personal belonging inventory, and important documents in the cloud if you have access to online file storage. »» Secure important documents as well as the photos and videos in waterproof containers. »» In the event of property damage or a loss, speak with an attorney before speaking with your insurance company. Our property damage claim attorneys represent residential and commercial property owners in all types of insurance claims, including those from storm damage. It is important to know that you can trust your insurance carrier to provide you the coverage you have been paying for. Unfortunately, most insurance companies will not simply pay fair value on a claim, especially if it is a significant, high-dollar property damage claim. In many cases, property owners need to take legal action to recover their losses and ensure that their insurance carriers comply with the terms of the insurance contract. Storm preparation is not something to take lightly. As we enter another hurricane season, please take a moment to ensure that both your family and your home are protected in the event of a storm. Review your supplies and your homeowners insurance policy to make sure that you are fully prepared and protected.

NOTHER SUMMER IS HERE AND DOG OWNERS ARE BEING BOMBARDED with news about a new flu virus infecting dogs everywhere in the United States. This has created much confusion, and a good amount of misinformation. So, let’s deal with the confusion by reviewing the facts. There are two strains of the Canine Influenza Virus (CIV), the older and better known H3N8, and the newer and more contagious H3N2. It is the latter that is believed to have transferred from birds to dogs in Asia and brought to this country through infected dogs, resulting in an outbreak in Chicago in 2015. Since then, the virus has spread, affecting dogs in almost every single state. In recent months, since May 2017, we have been witnessing a second outbreak. A special characteristic of this new H3N2 virus is that it is highly contagious; every single dog that is exposed will become infected. Another characteristic of H3N2 is that the severity of the infection is unpredictable. Twenty percent of infected dogs will show no symptoms, and most dogs will show cold-like symptoms, while others will have a rapidly progressing disease that could lead to hemorrhagic pneumonia and, without timely treatment, possibly death. The CIV is special in that infected dogs will be contagious to other dogs for a long time, almost a full month, regardless of if they are showing symptoms or not. There are reports of the CIV crossing species and affecting cats. So, what are the symptoms? The dog will have general symptoms of respiratory disease; very similar to the “Kennel Cough” disease (Bordetella/Parainfluenza complex for which dogs are vaccinated annually). The symptoms of CIV infection include coughing, sneezing, lethargy, fever, lack of appetite and mucous discharging from the nose. If the dog’s condition quickly gets worse or is coughing blood, there is a possibility that he/she might be infected with the CIV and not with the better known Kennel Cough. Dogs can be infected through the air (sneeze or cough from infected dog), by licking or sniffing other dogs, or through contact with infected objects such as food bowls and cloth. The Canine Flu virus infection has been seen in locations shared by multiple dogs such as kennels, grooming places, dog parks, dog shows/sport competitions, dog training classes, highway resting stops, and common green areas in apartment complexes. The CIV can be easily diagnosed through a blood or nasal mucosa test. Treatment is supportive, requiring antibiotic therapy. For dogs with severe disease, hospitalization for more aggressive therapy might be required. The best way to avoid the CIV infection is through prevention. If your dog lifestyle puts him/her at risk of contracting the disease, a vaccine will provide protection from the two variations of the Canine Flu Virus (H3N8 and H3N2). Two boosters are required. The vaccine will minimize the symptoms, and will prevent shedding of the virus. Also, it is recommended to avoid big dog crowds if possible, and to wash your hands when touching multiple dogs. Lastly, if your dog is coughing, do not take him/her to areas where there are other dogs that might get infected. Early diagnosis and treatment of the CIV increases the potential of a good outcome. If your dog is showing respiratory symptoms, a comprehensive exam by your veterinarian, and proper diagnostics will identify the cause and will allow early treatment.

There are lots of divorce moments that are still vivid in my mind even after ten years post divorce but one of the most telling took place in an elevator as my attorney took me down to the lobby. How we got on the topic of friendships is unclear but her advice rocked me. “Be prepared to lose your friends,” she said. As I stared in disbelief at her comment, her next statement was even more shocking, “Cut ties now and save yourself the pain of losing them in dribs and drabs.” I found myself giving her a litany of reasons why MY friends wouldn’t desert me. She listened and smiled, “You will have a few that will stay and they are your true friends, and the friends you make after your divorce you will have for the rest of your life.” The elevator door shut as I stood there in anger at her curt suggestion that my friends would do such a thing. Fast-forward ten years and true to her word, I have a few old friends left from “the group” and have made a bunch of new and amazing friends. Not that I got here unscathed. As the friendship fallout took place, I dealt with feelings of abandonment, anger, hurt and confusion. Why would they do this? Was it me? How could they add to my feelings of loss in a world that no longer looked familiar? Here is the conclusion I came to. We were no longer on the same playing field. I was now a single woman and their own insecurities about themselves and their marriage didn’t allow them to be able to deal with my divorce. Our worlds became different as did our conversations and they were uncomfortable with the change. At the end of the day, many days to be exact, I found peace. I came to realize that I had had superficial friendships, that I had been the one to go through the divorce but they were the ones with much bigger issues. The handful of friends that remained in “my camp” made up for all the ones that deserted. Life has a funny way of showing you what is important and when something is taken away, something better comes along, as in the case with my newfound friends. So, back to the question of who gets custody of the friends? The answer isn’t who gets custody but rather who cherishes your friendship enough to stay? Don’t waste energy trying to hold onto people who don’t want to embrace your new life but continue to cultivate those friendships that have proven their weight in gold.
Offer is valid for up to a half acre. New customers only.

Straight Talk (cont.) intervention. For these patients, treatment is likely to consist of guiding the growth of the jaws so that the permanent teeth are in good positions as they come in. As mentioned, orthodontic treatment is easier and more predictable in children, yet it is still highly successful in adults as well. Over my 12 years as an orthodontist I have treated patients as young as 7 years old and as old as 72!
ARE THERE ANY REQUIREMENTS FOR ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT? The most important requirement for orthodontic treatment is a healthy mouth. Orthodontic tooth movement cannot occur when tooth decay or gum disease are actively present. Thus a proper checkup and cleaning with a general dentist or pediatric dentist are necessary before and during orthodontic treatment. At the same time, good oral health care maintenance at home is essential to avoid the development of cavities or gum problems during treatment. Another essential requirement is a commitment from the patient to cooperate and have fun! Orthodontic treatment is not painful and is an overall positive experience, as it leads to a beautiful smile with little to no discomfort. I have had patients undergo a life changing process through their orthodontic treatment as it brought them a sense of confidence and an ability to smile that they never were able to experience.
