community news Fit Kids Day an Event “By Kids, For Kids”

he annual Fit Kids Day attracted more than 30 sponsors and 500 participants to its inaugural event in Pinecrest in 2012. Those numbers doubled in 2013. The third annual Fit Kids Day event was held on Saturday, May 3rd in Evelyn Greer Park. Sofia de la Peña began this movement when she was in the sixth grade. The event “by kids, for kids,” promotes fitness and healthy eating. In coordination with the Pinecrest Parks and Recreation Department, the day was designed to bring awareness to childhood obesity. The day was tailored to introduce children to sports so they will spend more time outside being active while having fun. There were tennis drills, soccer training, martial arts, baseball games, lacrosse demos, Zumba and relaxation techniques featured. Nutritionists from Baptist Hospital held informational sessions on healthy eating and local chefs performed cooking demonstrations. “A lot of kids think exercise isn’t fun and healthy food isn’t yummy,” said Sofia, 14 and now a freshman at Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart in Coconut Grove. “I wanted to speak out about obesity being a big problem in our community and convince kids to give sports and healthy foods a chance.” Childhood obesity is considered a national health crisis, with one in three children 2-19 being overweight, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Eduardo Bricenos-Saez is a senior Fit Kids Day student ambassador. He and other student ambassadors had been planning this year’s event since January. “I think that our hard work and long preparation for Fit Kids Day is worth the effort because it spreads the message that a healthy kid is a healthy adult,” said Eduardo, who is 12 years old and a seventh grader at Gulliver Academy. “Being part of Fit Kids Day has made me realize that kids have a voice in the community and that we can make positive changes if we all work together.” Garrett Kraft, 14, is also a Gulliver student. He joined the Fit Kids Day movement to help spread the word that small changes in diet and daily routines translate to a healthier lifestyle. “I believe that the role I play as an ambassador for Fit Kids Day is very important to my community because I can help others learn about maintaining healthy life habits like eating healthy and exercising,” said Garret who is an eighth grader. Catie Garcia, 13, is a founding student ambassador for Fit Kids Day. For three years, Catie has been spreading the word about childhood obesity and its implications. “Fit Kids Day has given me the opportunity to make a difference one city at a time. It’s a fun way to let kids know that nutritious food can actually taste good, and that doing sports and keeping active is the key to a healthier lifestyle and a healthier future,” said Catie, who is an eighth grader at Ransom Everglades School. Key Biscayne also held its first Fit Kids Day on May 24 at Village Green Park during National Health and Fitness Month. And other groups in cities, such as, Aventura, Doral, Tampa and Jacksonville have shown interest in having a Fit Kids Day event. “The idea is for kids to get other kids excited about exercise and healthy foods,” said Pinecrest Mayor Cindy Lerner, who was the first to latch onto the idea when Sofia proposed Fit Kids Day in 2011. Lerner said the initiative meshed well with the Village’s adoption of First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move!” program, part of the White House Task Force on childhood obesity. “Now we have public and private schools involved, and a goal to particularly attract those kids who aren’t already involved in sports or outdoor activities,” Lerner said. “Every city has parks and recreational facilities. This is a great way for cities to engage the community and provide resources.” 8

community news 7 Things You Must Do To Prepare Your Home and Family for the Hurricane Season

he Atlantic hurricane season is officially upon us, beginning on June 1 and continuing through November 30. Depending on various sources, this year’s hurricane season could be quieter than normal, about average, or stronger than usual. In other words, it’s anyone’s guess. What’s not anyone’s guess is the fact that hurricanes are dangerous events. And if you’ve experienced one of these fierce storms, you’re acutely aware of their devastating potential. In this article, we’re outlining some simple measures you can take now to ensure that your family – and your home - is ready for hurricane season. 1. Choose a safe place for your family to weather the storm. If you want to remain inside your home, consider a windowless room located on the bottom level. If your home doesn’t have such an area, be sure to research the locations of at least two emergency shelters near your home. 2. Stock up on supplies. Maintain a supply of enough non-perishable food and water to feed your family for at least a couple of weeks. Consider purchasing new canned goods every few years and rotating the others throughout your pantry. For best results, water should be replaced annually. Other disaster supplies should include: »» Batteries »» Battery-operated radio »» Medication for all family members »» Cash »» First aid kit »» Toiletries »» Flashlights »» Clothing 3. Prepare your home. If your home has hurricane shutters, make sure that you have some extra screws/washers handy. If you don’t have the shutters, maintain a supply

of plywood that has been precut to fit your windows. And don’t forget your roof…roof cover damage is the biggest reason for hurricane insurance claims that are not related to storm surges, so now is a good time to have your roof inspected by a professional to identify and fix potential problems.

4. Put together a communications plan for your family. Because family members can become separated at any time, it’s a good idea to have a person who lives out of state serve as the point of contact for all family members. Make sure everyone in the family knows who that person is and has their phone number readily available. 5. Review your insurance coverage. Insurance companies typically stop awarding coverage when a storm is approaching. Ensure that your homeowner’s insurance provides enough coverage to rebuild your home in today’s economy. 6. Don’t forget to plan for your pets. If you have pets, you may want to consider evacuating them early to a friend’s home that’s located in a safe area. 7. Keep at least a half a tank of gas in your car at all times during hurricane season. When a storm approaches, lines at gas stations will become extremely long and some may even run out of gas before the storm hits. Make sure you have enough gas to safely evacuate if the situation warrants. So there you have it…follow these 7 simple tips to ensure a safe hurricane season for your family and your home!

almetto Bay welcomed BUPA Global to our community in May. BUPA Global is one of the largest healthcare and insurance companies with over 22 million customers worldwide. The grand opening for the company’s Palmetto Bay Office, which is located at the Palmetto Bay Village Center, turned out local officials and their 500 employees. During the ribbon cutting ceremony the Company CEO described the direction of LEED certification that the renovation of their building is taking. His comments allowed that they recognize the “green” philosophy of Palmetto Bay and is pleased to follow the Village’s lead. The CEO also made a surprise announcement that the company was already expanding in the Palmetto Bay location by adding an additional 100 employees. This lease represents one of the largest leases in 2013/14 for Miami-Dade County. BUPA has made a great contribution to the economic development efforts of the Village. Speaking of our efforts in economic development, the Village is sponsoring a 4th of July Down Town Event. Tell us about yourself. What inspired you to open Say It With Paper?

Every item in the store has to pass one test: Is this an item I’d be thrilled to give or receive? In terms of stationery, people still write and love nice paper; a hand-written note or birthday card will always prevail. We think of stationery as the original social media and in an effort to encourage more snail-mail, we provide stamps with every greeting card purchase. Doesn’t get any easier than that!

Are people still sending paper invites?!

It’s sort of a happy accident how it all began. The summer I turned 16, my mom said I needed a job and she happened to be friends with some ladies who, at the time, ran a lovely invitation shop here in town – and knew they wouldn’t say no to hiring me! It was there that I fell in love with paper and the client relationships built around it. Nothing brings me greater joy than meeting a bride-to-be and seeing them again and again over the years as their families grow. Each and every customer who walks through the door becomes a friend for life. After ten-plus years in the business, it was time for me to spread my wings and build the store of my dreams; thus, Say It With Paper was born.

I believe people will always want a beautiful invitation to commemorate major milestones in life, like getting married or having a baby. That said, we also stock over 250 imprintable invitations for any and every event type. Available blank for inhome printing or printed by us in just a couple of days, there’s no reason not to send a personalized, paper invite – no matter the occasion or size. Just last month, our most popular print job was for dinner parties of 12 or less. Let’s face it: e-anything is impersonal and people love opening the mailbox and finding an envelope that doesn’t have a bill in it!

es it’s hot during the South Florida summer, but that’s no excuse to hibernate in the comfort of your air conditioned hacienda! With school out for summer, now is the time to get moving…for your sake and your kids. Bike rides, swimming, walks on the beach, soccer at the park…all of these activities are not only great cardio, but also fun for the kiddos. Last month the Miami Marlins held a PLAY Clinic, (which stands for Promoting a Lifetime of Activity for Youth) for elementary school students as part of an MLB initiative. Players, coaches and trainers were on hand to talk about proper nutrition, workouts, stretching, and the dangers of performance enhancing drugs. Sean Cunningham, the veteran Head Athletic Trainer for the Marlins thinks, “In a perfect world kids are exercising every day, there’s no reason not to get outside and play. Play is healthy physically, and it’s healthy for the mind.” But children are not going to take the initiative without a little encouragement from their folks. Cunningham believes, “kids are impressionable; they are going to model behavior…good and bad. So ideally the parents need to be demonstrating workouts and healthy eating. If parents are emphasizing exercise and the kids see that, they will pick up on it. The most important thing is for kids to have a good time – if you are having fun exercising, you are going to be more likely to repeat that.” Here are some tips the Marlins trainer recommends for athletic kids this summer: »» Hydrate – If you are out in the hot sun, your muscles are going to get dehydrated, so it’s important to drink plenty of fluids to avoid heat stroke and heat cramps. »» Stretch – You need to stretch or do an active warmup before you go outside to play to loosen the muscles. If you pull a muscle and then you have to stop the sport, it gets tough to get back into it. »» Cool Down – Make sure you ice down if there’s soreness after the activity. Don’t forget to do a cool down, and stretch afterwards as well. »» Sunscreen – It is so important to apply sunscreen. The dangers of skin cancer are out there, you need to be aware of it and protect yourself. Marlins Pitcher Kevin Slowey also participated in the clinic, and spoke to elementary students. Exercise is a natural and very effective way to treat, cope and improve stress, depression, anger and self image. Staying active can reduce the risk of stroke and improve functionality in your daily activities by increasing muscle endurance, coordination, agility and strength. A regular fitness routine has shown to be the number one treatment for osteoporosis. Exercise also increases the oxygen to the brain, improving memory and mental acuity. Children need to exercise, as well. Statistics have shown that they are snacking 30% more and consuming an extra 130 calories per day. Finding a regular activity they can enjoy is more crucial than ever to their overall health and development.

Fortunately, many types of exercise have become very popular and accessible. Here are a few options that are currently offered and trending in communities and fitness facilities around the world: 1. Endurance Sports: running, swimming, walking, skating, cycling, kayaking, paddle boarding, cross country skiing and triathlons are good options for anyone -beginner to expert with varying degrees of distance and intensity. Outdoor activities also increase exposure to Vitamin D, which boosts the immune system, bone health, and weight loss. 2. Spinning®, or indoor cycling: two of my favorite types of exercise, which are accessible and fun for all levels. Cadence (pedal speed) and resistance are fully adjustable. This group class can burn anywhere from 500-1,000 calories per hour. 3. Yoga: a fantastic exercise that focuses on physical, mental and spiritual health by utilizing many different positions and breathing techniques. 4. Crossfit: a high intensity timed circuit that focuses on improving power, strength, coordination and muscle endurance. 5. Zumba®, or similar dance classes: these classes have had such a strong and successful impact in the fitness community. One reason is that they have introduced a new attitude of workout that can be fun and burn calories at the same time. Personal Training: some of the biggest challenges with fitness is finding the proper motivation to stay consistent, and knowing the proper techniques and programming from a vast array of available exercises and equipment. chool is out. Time for fun, swimming on the beach with friends, vacations with your family. No homework. No waking up early to go to school. The opportunities are many: sports, music, art, academics, volunteer work, and part-time jobs. In the summer, you hear all types of music … at parades, at concerts, at the fireworks, or relaxing at home. Would you like to learn music or become a more experienced musician? Summer is less scheduled and therefore, there’s more time to learn a musical instrument, take music lessons and practice, practice, practice. You are never too old to start learning a musical instrument. And by starting your children playing instruments as young as four, you are helping them learn a technique and skill that will last a lifetime. As parents, we want our children to be well rounded and oftentimes schedule them for many activities after school … softball, baseball, soccer, swim lessons, t-ball, hockey, dance, volleyball, golf. Why not music lessons this summer? Taking the summer off from practicing your musical instrument is practically guaranteed to set you back. It is difficult to maintain your level of confidence when you don’t continue your regular practice routine. Instead of taking time off during the summer, take advantage of the extra time by focusing on developing improved practice habits that can take you to your next musical plateau. Routine dental visits allow for the early detection of gum disease, tooth decay and even cancer. It is these exact reasons why oral exams, dental health and prevention are of the utmost importance for your pets’ health.

What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease (PD) affects your pet’s gums and support structures for their teeth, including bone. PD starts with a transparent film of plaque formed from a mixture of sloughed skin cells and bacteria. This plaque will then mineralize into a hard, cement-like calculus on the surface of the tooth. Calculus will irritate the gums; change the pH of the mouth, allowing bacteria to flourish. The bacteria will eventually break down the tooth’s support system leading to mobile and often painful teeth… and stinky breath!

Locally, PD can cause oral pain, loose teeth, tooth root abscesses, gum and/or bone infections, to name a few. In chronic cases, oral bacteria can travel into the circulatory system and affect internal organs such as the heart.

How can I tell that my pet is experiencing oral pain?

Dogs and cats are extremely stoic when it comes to exhibiting pain (blame Darwin!) and periodontal disease is often an incidental finding during your pets annual examination. In my years of practice, I have come across fractured teeth, tooth root abscesses and bleeding gums to the surprise of my clients. “But Buddy hasn’t skipped a meal in all his life!” they exclaim. In addition to being stoic, our pets will find any way to continue eating (again blame Darwin!). This even includes swallowing their food whole! Symptoms of oral pain can be as vague as chewing on the left side of their mouth or as extreme as refusing to eat.

Why must my pet be put under general anesthesia for a dental cleaning?

Firstly, having a pet under general anesthesia allows Veterinarians to perform a more thorough oral exam without causing undue stress to the pets. The use of sharp instruments during a dental cleaning can be extremely dangerous in an awake animal. Lastly, the use of an endotracheal tube avoids the potential for aspiration of fluids and material.

How can I prevent periodontal disease in my pet?

Daily teeth cleaning with a veterinary approved dental paste will decrease the plaque formation in your pet’s mouth, preventing the formation of calculus and allowing for more pleasant kisses. Please seek the advice of your Veterinarian if you feel your pet is exhibiting oral pain or would like an assessment of their oral health. ell my faithful readers, I’m about to take you way out of your zip code to Western Nebraska. Let me dispel a myth right up front; Nebraska is not just about cornfields. I think I saw two the whole time I was there. I’ve never been to Nebraska, never thought I would go to Nebraska, but I am here to tell you I’m going back. Nebraska is about the beautiful topography, history, and the great outdoors. The hiking is amazing for beginners to serious hikers. There’s kayaking, horseback riding, mountain biking, hunting, fishing, and my all time favorite, tanking (more on that later). I am about to show you a Nebraska you never thought existed. My journey started in North Platte at the North Platte Canteen, one of the largest volunteer efforts of WWII. Six million servicemen came through here and were met with food by the local women. I was fortunate enough to hear one of those servicemen playing the old piano as I walked around the museum. Also be sure to check out Fort McPherson next door. Moving onward, I stopped at Golden Spike Tower, which stands eight stories above the world’s largest train yard – Union Pacific’s Bailey Yard. Next stop, The Buffalo Bill Ranch. A fascinating tour of his home and memorabilia gave an up close and personal look into Buffalo Bill Cody’s life. Now for the best part, Tankin’ on the Loup. Imagine a

pristine day, picnic lunch, and a huge old-fashioned washtub that holds five adults floating down a river. There is no other way, in my opinion, to experience the Sandhill environment. Just sit back, get your camera ready, and take it all in, including the five wild horses that cantered down to the water’s edge. The horses passed way too quickly and how I longed to kick back, cowboy hat over my eyes, and listen to the beauty that surrounded me just a little longer. Back in the car on the way to Crawford, I passed through the Sandhills (20,000 square miles of mixed-grass prairie and sand dunes) - a view not to be missed. Take in the small town feel of Crawford while you dine at MJ’s Ranch House. Waking up in what used to be the enlisted men’s barracks at Fort Robinson State Park was a peek into history. The morning was cool but invigorating as I sipped my coffee in a rocker on the porch. Many of the original buildings of the fort still stand, including the stables, which is where I staddled up for my ride to Soldier Creek. You 34

want to know peace? Then get on the back of a horse and ride through grassy fields with nothing but wildflowers and the native birds to keep you company. Just when I thought this trip couldn’t get any better, I found out how wrong I was. Hiking in the Soldier Creek Wilderness made me pause in awe. The Pine Ridge is an area whose surface has eroded into buttes, ridges and canyons with Ponderosa pines standing guard along the way. If you look closely enough, you can find bone fragments embedded in the ridge, as I was lucky enough to do. There are no words that could aptly describe this scenery. Further down the trail, I made a stop at High Plains Homestead for a BBQ. It is an Old West settlement complete with a saloon. Hudson-Meng archaeological site, Carhenge (a take on Stonehenge with cars), the Oregon Trail, Chimney Rock, and the grand finale, a cookout dinner at Oregon Trail Wagon Train camp with a covered wagon ride under the stars, rounded out my final days. Let your imagination run free and make memories that last a lifetime as you explore Western Nebraska. The frontier trails are calling. Westward Ho! ummer’s imminent arrival means fun in the sun, but your vehicle’s air conditioning system will be under a serious strain. If you have not serviced your A/C system within a year, now’s the time to make that appointment. If you think your A/C isn’t as chilling as it used to be, but it’s still blowing cold, the system may just need to be recharged. While the summer heat may be great for tanning, if you are dressed for a function or heading to work, you don’t want your A/C to stop working then. When you’re ready to be cooled down and turn the A/C on, you simply want it to work. While some newer vehicles may be able to get away with having their A/C recharged, older cars and trucks may require a little extra attention.

To service your A/C system our technician will measure the pressure in your system. If it’s low, they’ll add enough refrigerant to get the reading within manufacturer’s specifications. If it’s not within the necessary parameters, you may have a leak somewhere in your system. We will inspect all of your air conditioning hard lines to make sure there are no obvious cracks. A/C compressor spins and pressurizes the system’s refrigerant, and this change in pressure cools the air coming into your vehicle. It spins at a dizzying rate, and the more you use the cool side of your thermostat, the more likely it is to eventually fail or leak. If your compressor runs low on oil, it’s possible the interior seals have failed and you’ll need a new unit. Fortunately, a new A/C compressor can be installed, but it’s a lot less expensive to have serviced the system before it failed. The best way to keep your compressor from failing is to have your A/C system serviced at least once a year, including the addition of the right kind of lubrication for your unit.

Another possible cause for a leaking system is your condenser. A condenser is basically a large heat exchanger, usually located in the front of your vehicle, and is exposed to oncoming air. If your condenser has been struck by a rock or some other flying material, it may be the culprit. Other components that affect the cooling of your A/C system includes your receiver dryer, evaporator and expansion valve. All of the pieces are essential to how chilly things get inside of your car. The receiver dryer, for instance, pulls condensation out of your refrigerant. This is important because when water mixes with refrigerant, it creates a corrosive acid that will degrade your A/C system rapidly. Your evaporator is essential to the refrigerant’s change from a gas to a liquid. That change is essential to how well your system cools. If your evaporator isn’t functioning at max capacity, your A/C won’t either. Similarly, the expansion valve acts as a gatekeeper, deciding how much refrigerant makes it into the evaporator. The more refrigerant the system needs, the more the expansion valve opens. If your expansion valve is not working properly, your air conditioning system isn’t going to be at its best. If it does come down to replacing your compressor, most systems will require going ahead and swapping out a number of periphery components at the same time. Why? It keeps you from having to waste time and money, and it makes sure they get the problem solved the first time. The A/C system is very interrelated, so if one part starts to fail, the stress or contaminant will affect the other parts. Since the A/C system involves so many components the best solution is preventative maintenance. Again, if you have not serviced your A/C system within a year, now’s the time to make that appointment. Burglars look for signs of empty homes, so never leave notes on your door for service people or visitors when you are not home; also, set your phone ringer to the lowest volume if you plan to be gone for long. Lock your doors and windows, avoid letting newspapers pile up while on vacation and ensure that bushes are trimmed so they don’t become screens for thieves to hide behind. A famous master thief once called CCTV systems “a burglar’s kryptonite.” Install your surveillance system conspicuously, and announce it with discouraging stickers or signs in the front and back of your property. Information is easily collected out of an unlocked mailbox, so never put outgoing mail containing personal information out for pick up. Do NOT toss the box from a new flat screen out on the curb or throw bills and statements in the trash. Avoid telling thieves you’ve got great electronics inside they can sell. Organize a Neighborhood Watch group whose duty is to ask neighbors to be alert, observant, and caring—and to report suspicious activity or crimes immediately to the police.

Staying Safe at Work

As an employer, assume the responsibility of creating plans in case of emergency or disaster. Ensure that all employees are fully aware of the plan. Just as homeowners create emergency supply stockpiles, so should business owners. This can include everything from First Aid equipment to flashlights. To more readily detect the presence of unauthorized people, employers and employees should always be familiar with the individuals in a workplace. Always check the identification of a stranger who comes into your office to do repair or other service work. If deemed necessary, call the repair company. At work, never leave money, credit cards, travel documents, or anything else of value in an unlocked desk or cabinet. When arriving at and leaving your work location, try to plan ahead. Try to leave with or at the same time as someone you know. If you will be leaving after dusk, move your car as close as possible to the exit while it is still daylight. Keep the keys you will need accessible, preferably in your hand and ready to go. Even with crime on the rise, the good news is that we can still dissuade perpetrators by being conscious of the image that we project at home and work: confidence vs. fear, awareness vs. unpreparedness. n late 2007 and early 2008 we suffered one of the largest economic collapses in U.S. history. The real estate market was the first to tumble, with property values depreciating hundreds of thousands of dollars in just a few short months. Overwhelmed with this financial collapse, and a dwindling job market, many homeowners were either unable or unwilling to continue making their mortgage payments. Foreclosure proceedings began on most of those homes, but on some, the lenders have not initiated any foreclosure or collection proceedings, or started the foreclosure and then dismissed it before a final resolution. These are the types of cases that would qualify for a “quiet title action.”

A quiet title action is a legal action filed by a homeowner against the mortgage holder in order to legally eliminate the mortgage recorded against the home as of public record, or in legal terms, remove “cloud on the title.” The reason why a quiet title action is such a timely solution now is because under Florida’s statute of limitations, a lender only has five (5) years from the date of default under the note and mortgage to initiate a lawsuit to collect the debt or foreclose on the home. Since many homeowners defaulted (i.e., stopped making payments) in late 2007 and early 2008 due to the economic collapse, 2013 marks the end of the five (5) years that a mortgage holder has to initiate a foreclosure or collection action against a defaulting homeowner. If your lender has not initiated any foreclosure or collection action against you, or previously initiated an action and then dismissed it before a resolution, and five years have passed since your last payment (or the five year window is soon approaching), you are an excellent candidate to file a quiet title action in order to completely eliminate the mortgage on your home. So now the mortgage is gone, what about the debt? In order to eliminate the debt, two options exist for homeowners once the mortgage lien is removed. First, a homeowner can wait until the lender files its untimely legal action to collect the debt, and effectively defend it on the five year statute of limitations theory described above. Second, a homeowner can file for bankruptcy protection after a successful quiet title action to wipe out any personal responsibility for the debt under the home loan. ou hold your infant in your arms for the first time and your mind begins to race. You are overwhelmed with feelings of awe, gratitude, joy and maybe even fear. You question your ability to care for this new life. What do we know about a child when he or she is born? We do not yet know his or her temperament, will he or she be easy going or strong willed? Will he or she be soothed easily, will loud noises disturb him or her? Will my baby be like me? As our child grows, preferences become clearer. We know what foods he or she likes, which games, books and toys he or she enjoys. King Solomon’s ancient wisdom is as important today as it was 3000 years ago: “Educate the child according to his path and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6) Personality, likes, abilities and skills all play a part in how a child learns. We must embrace the uniqueness of every child when we are teaching. An educator is not teaching a subject, but rather the person in front of him or her. In religious education, we seek to inspire and nurture a child intellectually, emotionally, socially and spiritually. A religious education is value based in such a way that the learners will integrate and have the skills to perpetuate those values. Kindness, good deeds, service to the community, ritual, learning, a love of Israel are the ethical standards that are the core of education at Bet Breira Samu-El Or Olom. We are committed to educating students based on their strengths and interests and therefore we are introducing a paradigm shift in our Religious School. In August, 2014, Bet Breira Samu-El Or Olom will introduce a new “Interest Based Learning” curriculum for our Religious School children in grades K-6. Children in grades 3-6 will choose from Performing Arts, Games and Sports and Jewish ‘Netiquette’ as their Judaic Studies class. estminster High School Girls Softball team celebrating their 12-0 win for the 2014 FHSAA Class 3A Championship game against Moore Haven High School played at Dodgertown in Vero Beach on Saturday, May 10, 2014. This is the third State Championship for the softball program in school history. It is Westminster’s Second State Championship this year - WCS Volleyball earned its first State Championship ever in November 2013. debbie does divorce ating is one of the top “priorities” when people come to see me after they are divorced. People talk about dating as if it is one thing, but actually, dating post divorce is multifaceted, and each issue needs to be addressed one by one and with patience. How long do I wait to start dating, when do I sleep with him/her, how long do I wait to introduce the kids, when should I kiss him/her? The rules have changed. Should I date someone younger or older? The barrage of questions keeps coming at rapid speed. One of my clients posed this exact question and I share it because I found it interesting that she views dating as a “battlefield.” So, I found myself wondering how many divorced people carry this view around and are then confused as to why they don’t have dates? “I am so frustrated being out in the dating world again. It appears so much has changed while I’ve been married. Any sage advice on how to navigate this battlefield?” Funny how you use the word “battlefield” to describe the dating world. If that is how you perceive it, then that is what it will be to you. No doubt, dating is a challenge due to where you are in your life at present, but choose to look upon it with excitement and find the humor in it (God knows, there is plenty of that in the dating world). My “sage” advice is quite simply to be yourself and be smart. When I’m out at happy hours, I can’t help but notice women of all ages striking up a conversation with a complete stranger, and then promptly pulling out her business card and handing it over. Not smart. You wouldn’t give him your home address, but it’s ok to let him know where you work? I never quite understood the logic there. Don’t make this a competition. It’s not about you vs. a 20 something. It is about you being you and happy in your skin. Accepting that you are 40 something with the demands of work and children. Yes, there is someone out there who will be thrilled to be part of your life, but first you have to be thrilled to be part of your life. Be true to yourself and don’t settle for someone just because he’s a warm body. Know your deal breakers and don’t compromise on them because you’re afraid this is your last chance at love. Remember, everyone has some baggage, but you don’t want to take on someone with steamer trunks and a valet to carry them. Don’t feel pressured to give more than you are ready to give. And last but far from least, for God’s sake, use protection. STD’s in older people are more prevalent than you think. While dating in your 40’s, 50’s and 60’s is not the walk in the park it was in our 20’s and even 30’s, it isn’t a battlefield.
