BURNED! Summer is the time for get-togethers with friends and family, outdoor activities and holiday celebrations. The burn professionals at The Burn Center at Kendall Regional Medical Center warn that there are increased risks of burns associated with the 4th of July holiday. There are no ‘safe’ fireworks. Burns from sparklers are just as common as burns from larger fireworks and should be used with adult supervision. Fireworks should only be handled by adults. Let children enjoy the show, not be part of it. Follow the tips below to keep you and your family safe! Fireworks should NEVER be handled by children.
Keep children away from gas GRILLS.
In the searing sun, surfaces like playground equipment and walkways, can reach 200 degrees or more causing severe burns to arms, backs, legs, and feet.
In collaboration with Burn Centers of Florida, Inc., Kendall Regional Medical Center has a state-of-the-art outpatient burn clinic equipped with private treatment rooms that focuses on the postoperative discharge management of previously hospitalized burn patients. Physicians in the outpatient clinic also provide consultation and management of acute and chronic wounds, skin and soft tissue disorders. COMMUNITY NEWS Vision of 10-Mile Linear Park is One Step Closer to Reality

t happened “by accident.” While taking the Metrorail to physical therapy after a biking accident, Meg Daly had a Eureka moment. During her 7 block walk from the Coconut Grove station to her destination, Daly noted that the shady area was rather large and very underutilized. It was at this moment that she had a vision to transform the land underneath the Metrorail into a contiguous world-class urban trail, mobility corridor, and linear park. A year and a half after her walk under the Metrorail, her vision is now close to reality. Daly’s inspiration, New York City’s High Line is a “shockingly fantastic sculptural beauty dropped in a real gritty part of the meat packing district,” says Daly. In just a few short years, New York’s linear park has spurred an influx of meaningful development and generated billions of dollars in private real estate investment and increased tax revenue. With the knowledge of New York City’s High Line, Chicago’s 606, and other successful railroad initiatives, Daly founded Friends of The GreenLink. Where New York’s High Line spans only one mile, Friends of The GreenLink’s vision spans a 10 mile tract underneath MetroRail, from the Dadeland South station to the Miami River at Brickell Station (commonly known as the “M-Path”). The Foundation has quickly sprung into action to develop Miami’s own version of the High Line. The “M-Path” is currently a maximum 8 foot wide winding asphalt path lacking continuity, lighting and amenities. Friends of The GreenLink hope to change all this by more than doubling the width, add-
ing uniform lighting and amenities, exercise zones, dog parks, landscaping and much more. With a committee including leaders in the Miami-Dade Parks and Recreation and Miami-Dade Transit departments, preeminent urban planners, transit oriented specialists, biking advocates, public relations and marketing experts, leaders in the legal and accounting fields, private commercial developers, and more, things are moving fast. “The momentum has been kind of mind blowing,” Daly says. Florida Department of Transportation has taken great strides to support the project. Out of the 28 intersections spanning the 10 mile stretch, the FDOT owns eight. FDOT’s Gus Pego and Zakary Lata are leading an initiative to overhaul these intersections. They are currently focusing on “GreenLinking” the crosswalks at Bird Road and 27th Avenue to enhance bicyclist and pedestrian safety. These demo projects are in-line with GreenLink’s vision of a connected urban trail largely geared for runners and bicyclists. Other discussions have included painting the intersections green and building pedestrian plazas which could include increased lighting. The University of Miami has also jumped on the bandwagon. The University “has been so amazing to us,” says Daly. The School of Architecture offered a Spring 2014 studio class to prepare, pro bono, a concept plan of the 10-mile linear park. Ten students were each assigned one mile and created their interpretation of the project. Through July 11th, these student projects are on display at the Miami Center for Architecture and Design (“MCAD”). The public is encouraged to come to the free “Envisioning the M-Path Exhibit,” located at 100 NE 1st Ave. “The exhibit of the UM SoA vision plan drawings at MCAD is 8

As plans for the GreenLink continue to develop, Miami residents are encouraged to get involved and visit the current student designs on display. After its time at the MCAD, the Exhibit will move to History Miami this Fall. To learn more about GreenLink you can visit www.thegreenlink.org or follow GreenLink on Facebook and Twitter. COMMUNITY NEWS Pool Safety Tips For Summer
T
BY BROOKE BLOOM LAM
urtle Power for James Edwards. Hashtags and Facebook posts with this message frequented many South Floridian’s computer screens over the past month. On May 30, 2014, two-year old James Edwards, of Coral Springs, experienced a near-fatal drowning. James was quickly rescued and given CPR until the arrival of paramedics. Although James’ prognosis is still unclear, the steps taken by his rescuers were likely critical to his survival. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, among those aged one to fourteen, drowning remains the second-leading cause of unintentional injury-related deaths behind motor vehicle accidents. Losing a child is a parent’s worst nightmare but, there are simple steps that can be taken to ensure the safety of your children. If you have a child living in or frequently visiting your house, installing a pool fence is a key first step in prevention. Training comes next. Teaching children to swim as early as possible is of vital importance. When it comes to swim instruction, look for a program that teaches survival skills and how to practice pool safety, in addition to traditional lessons. Another important step, learning CPR yourself, can save the life of a near-drowning victim. When taking a course, make sure that you learn what to do specifically in the case of a drowning situation. A final key step is staying alert at all times. With hand-held electronics, it is easy for caretakers to get distracted. Most assume that texting and looking down at their phone while out at the pool is “watching.” This dangerous misbelief leads to many pool
accidents and deaths, since, in reality, drowning is deceptively quiet. The Instinctive Drowning Response is what people do to avoid actual or perceived suffocation in water. Physiologically, people are unable to call out for help or wave while drowning. During the Response: »» the mouth bobs below the surface with little time to come up for air; »» the arms push down against the water; and »» the body is upright with no kicking, The struggle seen on the surface occurs in 20-60 second intervals before the person goes back under. BE AWARE OF THESE OTHER SIGNS OF DROWNING:
»» Head tilted back with mouth open; »» Trying to swim in a particular direction but not making headway; and »» Trying to roll over on to the back. Not commonly discussed, but also of great importance, are dry drowning and delayed drowning, both side effects of water ingestion. Children who have asthma or other known breathing issues are at greater risk for these, which can result in death within one to twenty-four hours after a person has had a problem in the water. Some symptoms include continued coughing, trouble breathing, chest pains, extreme fatigue, a change in typical behavior, and turning pale. If caught early, dry drowning is treatable. Prevention is key when it comes to saving your children, or others, from drowning. Training new swimmers to close their mouths and hold their breath while jumping into the water helps to prevent accidental water inhalation. Learning to swim, practicing pool safety, staying attentive at all times, and learning CPR can all ensure that parents and their children enjoy the pool rather than fearing it.

he hair…the clothes…the date…the pre-party. Prom is a very special night in the life of a high schooler. For teens battling illnesses, however, this once in a lifetime experience is often missed. For approximately 75 of Miami Children’s Hospital’s teen patients (and their guests), that all changed courtesy of a generous donation to Miami Children’s Health Foundation. The donation was used in part to create a prom for these patients, but also to fund a reserve to continue hosting proms at Miami Children’s Hospital for the next four years. Current and recent chronic hospitalized teen patients enjoyed a Mad Hatter-themed prom, complete with an AstroTurf “red Paulina Botero seen posing on the “red carpet.” carpet.” “We are so thankful for the incredible donation from the Carlin family, who made our first prom a reality,” said Lucy Morillo, president and CEO of Miami Children’s Health Foundation. To ensure that guests had a true prom experience, the Hospital hosted a dinner for the parents of the prom-goers, where they were able to watch exciting prom arrivals via live stream. “As with any parents, there’s nothing more important to us than our children’s health and happiness,” said Adam and Chanin Carlin. “Miami Children’s is already doing such an incredible job taking care of all of our children’s health, perhaps we could make a difference for these children in helping to create a very special night of fun and happiness…We just wanted these extraordinary children to have an amazing night and be able to forget about Melissa Araujo having her Mary Kay makeover.
everything else happening in their lives,” they added. The Prom was a success thanks to the overwhelming support from national and local businesses willing to donate their time and services. The attendees arrived in style after pampering and makeovers by Paul Mitchell and Mary Kay stylists. Television personality and Miami-based Chef Adrianne Calvo catered the prom, and TheOfficeCake.com provided desserts. The tunes of popular DJ Vertigo, the official Miami Marlins spinner, kept everyone dancing the night away. Other inaugural sponsors included Peace Love World, Wow Factor and Logistical Outsourcing. Finally, as a keepsake gift, the Foundation surprised attendees with their very own Cruciani 2gether Bracelet, thanks to a donation by Eric and Alexandra Fabrikant. In addition to all of the sponsors and donors, volunteers, including nurses, doctors, social workers and Child Life Specialists, were on hand to ensure the prom was a success. “It takes [a lot] of effort to put together a prom of this magnitude and to make it truly special,” said Susan Kinnebrew, director of Child Life. “We are very thankful for everyone that volunteered their time to come together for the children,” she added. “For the first time, Miami Children’s Hospital teen patients truly enjoyed a rite of passage and celebrated like teenagers, not patients.” To learn more about the MCH Foundation and offer support, visit mchf.org/donate or call 305.666.2889.

bout one mile south of the Falls Shopping Center, sits a small private school nestled behind Rockdale Pineland Preserve. Village Pines School opened its doors in 1960 as a preschool, meeting the needs of the youngest learners in Miami. Lucille Frazier started Village Pines School in the early 1960’s after moving to Miami with her family. A University of Miami alum, Frazier dedicated her life to educating young minds. Village Pines has been a glowing example of this dedication as a thriving “pillar of the community.” Over the years, Village Pines School has grown and prospered in the same location. With classes beginning at Level 3 (3 years old) through the 5th Pines administrator, Margery grade, Village Pines provides an exciting, com- Village Amerling, and her mother Lucille Razier, plete, challenging and creative curriculum that founder of the Village Pines School. prepares the students to be 21st Century thinkers. All curriculums are based on the current Common Core expectations and standards so that students are traveling the road to college and career readiness. Village Pines prepares children for the future with “hands on” enrichment, as well as fulfilling all state requirements, including SAT testing. Taking into consideration that all children learn in different ways and rates, the highly certified and seasoned staff help them achieve success in an atmosphere of affection, praise, and encouragement. The small class size ratio, combined with dedicated and nurturing teachers, allow each
child to learn and to develop to his/her capacity. Village Pines School recognizes that academics are only one phase of a child’s development. In order to function successfully in the “real world,” social and emotional development are of extreme importance. Village Pines strives to meet the social, academic, and emotional needs of each child, encouraging each to develop into a well-rounded, respectful member of society. Their mission is to develop responsible citizens who are lifelong learners and who will contribute positively to their communities and society. When students leave, they are well prepared both academically and emotionally for the next phase of their educational experience. Frazier, now nearing 95 years old, has now passed the torch on to her daughter, Margery Amerling. A life long educator, Amerling has dedicated her career to the many phases of educating children, from teaching in the classroom to consulting with a national publishing company. As the administrator of Village Pines School, Amerling’s goal is to carry on her mother’s legacy to educate the children of south Miami-Dade. Village Pines School believes all children are capable of learning and growing to reach their potential. With a diverse population where tolerance and respect for others is fostered, Village Pines is proud to be able to provide a private school education at an attainable level. SCHOOL NEWS Bridging the Gap During the Summer Months
T
BY BROOKE BLOOM LAM
o most families, summertime means barbequing, swimming, camp, vacations, and mainly a break from school. While it’s nice and often important to give kids a rest, a lack of enriching summer activity can cause many students to fall behind. A survey by the National Summer Learning Association found that 66 percent of teachers polled felt that it took them at least three to four weeks to re-teach the previous year’s skills after the summer was over. Give your kids a head start and help offer an enriching summer that can still be fun as well. HERE ARE SOME TIPS TO HELP BRIDGE THE SUMMER EDUCATION GAP: Tap into Miami-Dade County’s Summer Learning Resources. iSummer: Learning
On-the-Go, which allows students in K-12th grades to practice what they have learned during the school year while exploring new concepts, is now open for registration through July 8. These packets additionally include Educational Web Links. For more information, visit dadeschools.net. Search Summer Reading Lists. MDC recommendats that students read at least 30 minutes every day. allow them to earn points for the amount they read each week. Offer a prize for reaching set goals. If your child has already been reading all summer, enter them in the Summer Reading Competition currently running through Miami-Dade Public Library System. Create a book club. Recruit a group of your friends’ kids and rotate houses to have them discuss the books they are reading. Plan some food or activities that go along with the theme of the book. Keep a Journal. For those with summer book reports or who are reading assigned books for the following school year, help your child remember what they’ve read with a journal. “Have them include a short summary of each chapter as they read it, along with a list of all main characters, with descriptions and their traits,” advises Jackie Bloom, a local private tutor. “The journal can extend to include definitions of difficult words, the setting, problem, and resolution. Referring to the journal will help with written book reports, and test taking at the beginning of the school year.” Start a blog. Help your child create a summer blog for free using Wordpress or Blogger. Encourage them to make daily or weekly entries about their summer activities. Invite family and friends to follow along. Get Cooking. Recipes are a great way to teach kitchen math. Teach your kids about measurements and conversions and then let them enjoy their creation. Search on Pinterest. A simple search for “summer learning activities” provides an abundant amount of suggestions on how to integrate learning into your summer. This is an especially great tool for pre-school and elementary aged children.

MAYOR OF PALMETTO BAY ummer is the beginning of the next step in the municipal cycle – the budget. The budget is the blue print for the coming fiscal year. It is the opportunity to bring new community programs, improvements to our parks, and convert what was “plans for some time in the future” to the implementation phase. Participation by residents through priority setting in the budget process ensures that tax dollars are spent according to the desires of the electorate. It’s a time to hear from residents about what’s important to them and further implement a strategic plan for the success of the Village’s future.” PALMETTO BAY’S 4TH OF JULY INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION A first for Palmetto Bay and another part of the Experience Downtown Events series, this July 4th celebration will feature a Free Kids Fun Zone, beer garden, music, Food Trucks, and of course, Fire Works. 5-9 pm.

MAYOR OF SOUTH MIAMI his summer, I am dying to see my first $7 electric bill from FPL. With a solar hot water heater, I waited for years and watched the prices drop on photovoltaic panels. It finally happened when solar hit “grid parity” last year, meaning that installing solar power has become as cheap as buying power from the existing energy grid. Last summer we installed a new roof and solar light tubes, and this summer we finally ordered the long-awaited photovoltaic solar array. Over the life of the array, our effective electric rate will average 70% of what we are paying now, accounting for interest paid, capital expenses, and equipment wear. You can hear me snickering over my spreadsheets. With the federal tax rebate, solar is 30% cheaper. Although Florida has eliminated all solar incentive programs, Florida’s net-metering law allows us to trade electricity with the utility – our meter will run backwards while the array generates more power than our house consumes. At the end of the year, the utility will pay wholesale rate for any surplus power we generated. We will help lower Florida’s carbon emissions while locking in long-tern savings. How’s that for a summer blockbuster?

MAYOR OF PINECREST he future of our public libraries will be determined this summer by the MiamiDade County Commission, so my focus will continue to be to assure they vote to restore the library budget on July 15th. “I THOUGHT I WOULD HAVE TO LIVE WITH MY PAIN AND STRESS UNTIL I DISCOVERED THIS SIMPLE YET AMAZING SOLUTION” PAIN!!! it comes in all shapes and sizes, all varieties and flavors and it doesn’t matter the time of day or year. It could be a neck pain here, back pain there, nagging headaches, you name it and you’re feeling it. It may be daily, weekly or even occasionally. You feel it driving in your car, walking in the mall, and even sitting down. You’ve tried many solutions but it always returns and shows its ugly head. You probably wonder why all your friends don’t suffer from this ... well they probably do but don’t want to let you know and the ones that do will give you their combination of pills that help them through until the next episode. Perhaps you’ve grown accustomed to the pain and discomforts. You CAN function and it’s just a matter of getting used to it. Why do you suffer from it, well the most common answer you are getting is: “You’re not getting any younger” You work out and try to eat right but continue to feel the pain and discomforts that affect your everyday life. Even your workouts and activities are limited. You’re trying to stay healthy but can’t put in the full effort because of your limited movements. You even feel your muscles tight and restricted. You probably believe the ‘not getting any younger’ saying because you can’t even pinpoint where it is all coming from. Did you know that there is a direct link between stress and pain? When there is stress, muscles will have a tendency to tense up and this tension constricts the blood vessels that flow through those muscles. When muscles are not receiving proper blood flow they will let you know by PAIN. So: STRESS CAUSES PAIN... among other things Stress is a much larger contributor to pain and ailments than you can imagine and the worst part about it is that often times you may not even realize that you are under stress. It is the cumulative effect that will get you. Here are some symptoms that are highly linked to stress; Fatigue, memory loss, jaw pain, colds and flu’s, gastrointestinal problems, asthma and allergies. Any or all these symptoms have affected your everyday life and it never fails to come when it’s the most inconvenient. Holidays, Birthdays, Anniversaries, Weddings, Galas.... Even your vacations are affected Can you believe it, I mean you’ve looked forward to it, planned all your activities and then to be limited by pain and symptoms. That’s not what you planned for, not what you envisioned and frankly it’s just unacceptable. No matter your age you shouldn’t be feeling this way regardless of what reasons, pseudo solutions, or explanations you are given. You know you are not getting any younger but you don’t have to settle for that answer, WHY? Because they’re simply WRONG. This amazing solution will change everything We’ll first talk about this change. It is not the aging process alone that causes all these aches, pains and stress. When you remove the stresses and imbalances in your body your pain begins to subside and subside QUICKLY. Not only will you experience pain relief but you will begin to realize how much you had given up or had accepted as normal that in fact was limiting your day to day life. Pain relief brings a state of better relaxation which allows your sleep and rest to be improved. It has been estimated that about two thirds of people suffering from chronic pains experience sleep disorders. Sleep is integral for health and wellbeing. It enhances your immune system and allows the body to heal and refuel, so you have the proper energy during your waking hours. Decreased tension in the muscles increases proper blood flow and helps maintain muscle elasticity and flexibility so that you are no longer limited when exercising or performing daily activities. These changes also advance exponentially because one builds on the other. So there will be marked improvements on many aspects of your health and life, you will experience BETTER: Energy, Moods, Relaxation, Sleep, Focus, and Concentration Now we can talk about this surprisingly simple yet amazing solution. We’ll tell you what’s so simple about it and later we will reveal what makes it so amazing.
You have heard the words “there’s nothing new under the sun”, well let’s see it in a little more detail: “that which has been is what will be, That which is done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun. Need a little clarification; that which has been is what will be; the solution you will experience is based on technology and procedures that have been around and proven to work in and of itself, this is what will be. That which is done is what will be done; From these present day technologies and procedures is the care that will be done. There is nothing new under the sun; so in essence it is not a new technology, treatment, or procedure. At first glance it looks like you could get it anywhere. This is what is so simple. It is out there and easily accessible but... This SIMPLE Solution isn’t STANDARD, ORDINARY or COMMON Italian sausage, lean ground beef, minced onion, garlic cloves, crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, water, white sugar, dried basil, salt, ground black pepper, fresh parsley, ricotta cheese, eggs, mozzarella cheese, parmesan cheese and lasagna noodles. Yes you guessed it, it’s the ingredients for lasagna. I’ll repeat, the INGREDIENTS for lasagna. Without the recipe it could be a disaster waiting to happen. Without the recipe and the right chef it could be just a standard, ordinary or common lasagna. Bland tasting, not leaving a lasting impression and possibly leaving you without a desire to have one again. A take it or leave it attitude. All the technology, innovations, procedures, and equipment are just ingredients at our disposal to bring together for administering care but unless you have the right recipe and the right chef it may just be a bland, unimpressive care that may not be as effective as it should. You see recipes are tweaked and modified, and through improvements and time they are perfected to deliver the final product. Many times they have a secret recipe that sets them apart. Yes, this simple solution is not standard, ordinary or common. The combination of technologies, equipment and procedures have been put together over the last 14 years to give lasting and effective results. This recipe is: TIME TESTED AND EFFECTIVE Why in the world would you take my word for it? I wouldn’t. I am one of the biggest skeptics out there. You see, what makes a lasagna amazing is not the chef telling you it is, but the consumers and patrons praising it, coming back for more and telling their friends. That is the true revelation between success and failure. Here are some of the AMAZING results. “…Prior to seeing Dr Blanco, I suffered severe left hand pain and occasional low back pain. I always thought that the problem was muscular but through Dr. Blanco I found that it was also skeletal. In almost four weeks of treatment all my pain is almost gone. I have found that the treatments helped me increase my flexibility and speed in karate. I used to be skeptical until I met Dr. Blanco. He has been a tremendous help for me. He is honest as well as a good listener. I am now a frequent patient and have now made these treatment’s a part of my healthy lifestyle.” -M.B. “…After I began my therapy sessions I feel like a new me. I was unable to do any physical activities prior to my sessions at the clinic, and now I can resume all my regular everyday tasks and it is all thanks to my treatment with Dr Blanco.” -G.S. “…When I called Dr. Olivio’s office I was in pain for three weeks. I suffer from fibromyalgia and have been experiencing a lot of pain. My back went out and my body was completely out of shape, and on top of this I had back surgery five years ago. I was very scared, but Dr. Olivio spoke with me and said that he could help. Not just with my back but also with the fibromyalgia. He was sure of that and he did it! My back is back to the right position and my usual pain level had lowered. I can sleep much better and I can be myself again thanks to Dr. Olivio Blanco and his team. If you are in pain, just go to Dr. Olivio Blanco’s office; you will not be sorry. The girls are wonderful, professional, nice, sweet, and always treat everyone with respect. Above all, they KNOW what they are doing. Now, about Dr. Olivio; what can I say? A wonderful team needs a wonderful leader.” -P.A. “…I want to thank Dr. Blanco and his great staff for their dedication, kindness and for taking great care of me for the last couple of months. When I started with them I was in constant pain in my lower right side of my back. As the weeks passed I have felt great and I have been pain free. The treatments and therapy does work and I am grateful. Again thanks to Dr. Blanco and the staff. May the Lord bless you guys.” -J.T.

FEATURE : DRS. PHILLIPS, MILLER AND ROCA
A Close-Knit, FamilyOriented Practice
D
BY BROOKE BLOOM LAM
o you feel like a number, a stranger in your doctor’s office? Do you endure overbooked appointments, packed waiting rooms, and a lack of returned phone calls? Patients want visits to their medical providers to be less cold and clinical, and more warm and comfortable, especially when it comes to more personal issues such as gynecological and obstetric related visits.
Sadly, a dismissal and indifferent attitude is all too often the experience of patients in so many physicians’ offices these days. Thankfully, Drs. Edward F. Phillips, Joyce R. Miller and Luis E. Roca work diligently to create a close-knit, familyoriented practice. “We take pride in the attention we give our patients,” says Dr. Miller. “Patients with us won’t get lost in the shuffle,” adds Dr. Roca. Practice Administrator, Mary Jane Nelson, has been with Dr. Phillips since he began his practice and takes pride in the warm and welcoming front desk staff and the caring medical assistants. As she says, “They are the best in town!” Striving for the highest of quality care, Dr. Phillips says their office, located in South Miami, seeks to provide “a comfortable environment and positive experience for all our patients.” Phillips, Miller and Roca, founded in 1991, has evolved over time and is “exactly as I planned it and couldn’t be better,” says Dr. Phillips. With quarterly patient satisfaction surveys, Drs. Phillips, Miller and Roca actively make an effort to listen to their patients in order to provide the best experience possible. This has resulted in not only great medical care, but life-long relationships. “Over the years, I have developed close relationships with my patients and many are my dear friends,” says Dr. Miller. “I treat each annual visit as more than just a yearly checkup, as it gives me the opportunity to catch up on the lives of my patients,” she adds. Their patients wholeheartedly agree. Alicyn Drujak, currently under Dr. Roca’s care, has been a patient for years and couldn’t be happier. “My experience with Drs. Phillips, Miller and Roca has been wonderful,” Drujak says. “I never hesitated to return to them with my second pregnancy.” For pregnant patients, Dr. Roca and Dr. Phillips are the two primary physicians for obstetrical care. When it comes to delivery, “you’re pretty much guaranteed one of the two of us,” Dr. Roca says. This avoids the need for a 20
www.thefloridavillager.com | July 2014
patient to have to rotate around a large office on every visit and reduces the risk of being delivered by a doctor that the patient doesn’t know. Dr. Roca adds that “even when we aren’t the doctor on call, if there’s a relationship with the patient, and they specifically request a doctor, we can often accommodate and come in.” Although Dr. Roca started medical school with plans to specialize in internal medicine, a delivery on the first day of his third-year medical rotation changed his life. “I knew then this was what I wanted to do the rest of my life.” Over 1,000 deliveries later, the sentiment remains. “I still get a surge, a sense of amazingness every time I deliver a baby,” Dr. Roca says. “It’s an overwhelming sensation.” Dr. Phillips agrees, calling their chosen profession “the best field ever.” In practice now for 22 years, Dr. Miller’s draw to OB/GYN was very natural. “As a woman, I felt a connection with my patients,” she says. “It is a happy field with healthy resilient woman,” she adds. No longer practicing OB, Dr. Miller treats patients from adolescence to the post-menopausal years, dealing with a wide array of gynecological issues from pelvic pain to hot flashes and hormone replacement therapy testing. She also performs procedures in the office such as colposcopies and diagnostic hysteroscopies and outpatient procedures which include laparoscopies and operative hysteroscopies, just to name a few. “I call my office my sanctuary, my comfort zone,” Dr. Miller says. “What can I say, I love what I do.” Aside from the three primary physicians, Phillips, Miller and Roca also have a Nurse Practitioner on staff. Katie Fitzgerald, ARNP, was a patient of the practice before she worked there. “It’s a very family oriented practice,” Fitzgerald says. “We are a family here.” Practicing in the strictly gynecological realm, Fitzgerald has been carving out a niche of her own. Although she sees patients of all ages, the majority of her patients are in their twenties. Fitzgerald works with adolescents and young women on
prevention options, counseling, and administering vaccinations, including the HPV vaccine, Gardasil, the Hepatitis A and B vaccines, TDAP and the flu shot. Having a great rapport with young adults, Fitzgerald is also a popular choice for well-woman exams. Offering more than routine care, Drs. Phillips, Miller and Roca are among only a few offices in South Florida currently offering a new kind of pelvic floor therapy. “One out of every four women have a complaint of a degree of urine loss or incontinence,” says Ana Bueno, the office’s Registered Nurse, “which they think is a normal part of aging or child birth.” Many patients don’t realize that this condition is treatable. The office now offers a non-invasive, natural concept to help strengthen the pelvic floor muscles. The program, called Femiscan, combines an interactive home trainer with assessment software administered by Bueno. The home trainer is individually programmed to teach women how to use Kegel exercises effectively. “When done correctly, there is an 80% success rate of improvement,” says Bueno. “By two months, we see gains not just subjectively from reports of symptoms, but objectively through measurements taken in the office.” A typical cycle, covered by most insurance, spans over four months with short, daily home exercises and two office visits per month. Patients of Drs. Phillips, Miller and Roca receive not only great care from doctors who love what they do, but there are added perks too. As Dr. Phillips says, “Dr. Roca, the guy looks like Superman. He’s very easy on the eyes.” When looking for a caring, competent and concerned OB/GYN practice, there’s no better choice than Phillips, Miller and Roca. The office of Drs. Phillips, Miller and Roca is located at 7000 SW 62nd Ave, Suite 350, South Miami, FL 33143. You can reach the office at 305-665-9644 for more information or to make an appointment.

WHAT’S NEW IN REAL ESTATE Putting Your Homes’ Best Foot Forward
S
BY ELENA KEMPER, EWM REALTY
elling your home is a large financial and emotional task; in fact, it is one of the biggest transactions a person makes in their lives. Many times people become stressed or overwhelmed by factors they had not considered before beginning the journey of selling their home. Keeping that in mind, it is important to consider the following before putting your house on the market. What is my home worth?
Several factors go into determining your home’s market value. These include the condition of the property, square footage, location, amenities, as well as recent comparable property sales. While these are some of the factors the answer is not always clear cut. How can I sell my house at the highest price?
There are several simple, low-cost things you can do to boost the value of your home. These include eliminating clutter, washing windows and walls, and installing higher wattage bulbs to create a brighter environment. Larger projects, like adding bedrooms and renovating kitchens and bathrooms, typically yield more substantial increases in sales price. How long will it take to sell my house?
The time your home spends on the market depends on several factors, including location, how competitively your home is priced,
REFRESH
and how aggressively your home is marketed. Statistics show that if a home is properly priced, an offer should come in within the first 12 showings.
∙∙ A fresh coat of paint. ∙∙ Strip off any old wallpaper and fill holes from nails and picture hangers. ∙∙ It’s often a good idea to repaint your front door as well (it’s the first detail potential buyers will notice!). ∙∙ Power washing the exterior and window cleaning.
Will an agent help me accomplish my goals?
A real estate agent can help with all aspects of the selling process, from pricing to marketing to handling the intricacies of closing. Hiring a professional who is experienced in your area and can help you position your property to get the highest and best price, is your ticket to a successful sale. In a sellers’ market, getting the property under contract is only half the battle, getting it closed is what makes a difference. An experienced negotiator on your side will prove invaluable. As a seller in today’s competitive housing market, you need to make sure you’re putting your home’s best foot forward for prospective buyers. While they may seem costly in the short term, a few repairs and renovations will lead to a quicker sale at or above your sticker price. The question is, what should you refresh, repair or replace? The tips to the right should help to alleviate some of the stress involved with putting your home up for sale. My job is to help you get the most value for your home and to help make the process of selling your home pain free. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call me.
REPLACE
∙∙ Worn carpet and flooring (especially in stairway or high traffic areas). ∙∙ Old bathroom and kitchen countertops, along with builtin appliances: dishwashers, cooktops, etc. ∙∙ The seals on all of your toilets ∙∙ Old light fixtures and window treatments.
REPAIR
∙∙ Worn or missing roof shingles ∙∙ Leaky faucets and refurbish with new O-rings, gaskets, and other parts. ∙∙ Faulty wiring and fix any problem sockets or switches. ∙∙ Ensure proper drainage by checking that your gutters are clear, clean, and freshly caulked. ∙∙ Check the lines leading to your dishwasher and washing machine.

SPOTLIGHT EVENT The International Mango Festival at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden
C
BY BROOKE BLOOM LAM
alling all mango fans and anyone looking for an outdoor culinary treat. Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden celebrates its 22nd Annual International Mango Festival, featuring mangos of Columbia, Saturday, July 12 – Sunday, July 13 from 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Spend the weekend exploring the gardens and delight in various mango inspired activities. Visitors of the Mango Festival can grab a famous Fairchild mango smoothie and make their way through Mangoville, where vendors will be selling a multitude of mango dishes and products. On Saturday, the Mango Morning Sampling will offer additional tasty mango dishes as Miami’s top restaurants, caterers and businesses alike sample their best creations. While in the Mango Tasting Room, guests can sample a variety of rare, freshly cut mangos (available for $1), and then vote on which cultivar is their favorite. Guests can also try their hand at making refreshing summer dishes by attending various cooking demonstrations to get new recipe ideas. For a special tropical culinary experience, the Mango Brunch is additionally offered on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. (reservations needed). Serving as a fundraiser for Fairchild’s Tropical Fruit Program, the brunch presents unique mango creations from some of Miami’s best chefs. While children will likely munch their way through the festival, they will have an opportunity to learn about mango and other fruits brought over by David Fairchild, the garden’s namesake, through hands-on interactive activities. Guests can enjoy face
painting, arts and much more, including yoga classes for adults and children by Rina Yoga. For guests looking to learn more about the delicious fruit, the Mangos of the World Display is a must see. This festival highlight offers the largest mango collection in the world, showcasing the differences in colors, shapes, and aromas of mangos across the globe. A Mango Auction will take place on Sunday at 2:00 p.m., where these mangos will be sold. A variety of lectures and workshops will also be held to help visitors learn the best ways to care for mango trees. This includes talks from Fairchild’s curators of tropical fruit, Richard Campbell and Noris Ledesma, who are in the process of growing a new hybrid mango. The two are also hosting the International Mango Festival Grower’s Summit on Friday, July 11, which will bring together commercial growers from all over the world to share their methods for mango cultivation. Visitors who are looking to start or add to their mango tree collection can continue to enjoy mangos after the festival with the purchase of a Curator’s Choice mango tree. This year’s International Mango Festival is sponsored by Whole Foods, Inc., Williamson Automotive Group, HSBC, Starbucks, Ecoripe Tropicals, South Miami Hospital, and Herederos Del Marqués de Riscal. Admission is free for Fairchild members and children 5 and under, $25 for adults, $18 for seniors 65 and up and $12 for children 6-17. READY TO ROCK Miami’s School of Rock Prepares for Battle of the Bands at Summerfest
G
BY BROOKE BLOOM LAM
lee, Pitch Perfect, School of Rock. What do they all have in common? A group of very talented students, all competing to win a music competition. Whereas the fictional characters in Glee and Pitch Perfect compete vocally, School of Rock (“SOR”), a real-life music school based in Miami, has a “House Band” comprised of multi-talented vocalists, guitarists, keyboard players, drummers, and bassists. This summer, the House Band, which includes two bands made up of eight total students, will fly to Milwaukee to compete in the Battle of the Bands, a competition within Summerfest. Known as “The World’s Largest Music Festival,” Summerfest is headlined this year by stars including Bruno Mars, Lady Gaga, Usher, Dave Matthew’s Band, and many more. The Miami House Band finished a respectable second place during last year’s competition, but this year, as Randy Jackson would say, they are “in it to win it”. “We expect to be in the finals,” says Lou Duvin, General Manager and Music Director of Miami’s SOR. “We need to turn it up a notch because I feel last year we made it to the finals as underdogs, but now we have a reputation to live up to,” Duvin added. Heading up the first band is Sabrina Yelen, the lead singer, who has been selected this year as a School of Rock “All-Star.” As an All-Star, Yelen will be part of the National Band, which will tour the East Coast, participating in showcases, festivals, and a variety of other gigs. They may have the talent behind them, Performer (top) and crowd from last but practice makes perfect. The SOR stu- year’s Battle of the Bands. dents have been preparing three songs, which they will perform live on stage, in front of thousands of people. A panel of world-renowned musicians will judge the competition. The Bands are trying to step it up this year by focusing on their performance as well as their skills. “Last year, the kids from Miami were very engaging,” Duvin says, “and were a crowd favorite.” The Bands are hoping to use this to their advantage to win the championship over the 58 other bands competing, particularly the rival Seattle Band, which took first place last year. In addition to gearing up for the big competition, Miami SOR’s Summer Camps are in full swing. The weekly camps, still open for enrollment, are mostly geared toward beginners and run daily from 10 am – 3 pm. Group rehearsals are led by the staff and camp director in preparation for each week’s end of camp show. Students entering the camps can select whether they want to play drums, guitar, keys, bass, or focus on vocals. Programming is also available throughout the year at SOR. Lessons include not only instruction, but the ability to play with other students as part of a band, as well as preparation for seasonal shows. During these shows, parents and guests are able to see and hear what the students have been working on. No auditions are required. “[The shows] are more about participating and having fun,” says Duvin. A local musician whose own band, Cleaveland Jones, was called the “Best of Miami” by the Miami New Times’ Readers Poll, Duvin knows what it’s like to “want a life in music.” School of Rock “inspires students by getting them on stage in a way traditional lessons might not,” Duvin explains. There certainly aren’t too many stages like the Summerfest stage, so for the moment, Miami’s SOR is keeping its eye on the prize and counting down the days until they have the chance to bring home the big win. HEALTH & FITNESS The Ironman Triathlon
T
BY MIKE ESTEVEZ, OWNER, PINECREST FITNESS
he Ironman Triathlon, as it is known today, was created on a dare…A way for super-athletes in their own categories – cyclers, swimmers and runners – to level the playing field by connecting the three sports into one long race, to prove once and for all who is the better athlete. Commander John Collins, recognized as the creator of the Ironman Triathlon back in 1977, wrote on the back of the rules addressed to the 15 original athletes in Waikiki, Hawaii, “Swim 2.4 miles, Bike 112 miles, Run 26.2 miles, brag the rest of your life.” That same race now hosts 2,500-3,000 athletes on the Big Island, known as the Ironman World Championship, and Ironman races like it occur year round all over the globe. As if completing 140.6 total miles in a day isn’t enough stress, you are only named an Ironman if you complete the race within 17 hours. The race starts at 7am for the age group athletes and officially ends at the stroke of midnight, with cutoff times placed into the Swim, Bike and Run – such as the 2 hour 18 minute limit to swim 2.4 miles. If you finish the entire race even one second after midnight, you earn a DNF (did not finish) and no recognition as an Ironman. The Ironman is not just a race that happens in one day, rather a journey that starts at least a year in advance. Most athletes train between 15-25 hours a week leading up to the Ironman, sacrificing family time, sleep, and money spent on training. Pros will complete the Ironman in 8-9 hours, leaving the age groupers up to 17 hours to cross. I’m writing this article after just completing my 4th Ironman in Woodlands, TX. I am both proud and humbled by this accomplishment. I was reminded that despite all the training and experience, stretching the limits can produce debilitating pain, cramps, nausea, vomiting, danger, despair, anger and delirium. But through it all, I found defiant perseverance, clarity, strength, next level connectivity with the universe and pure joy! This was my most challenging race yet. Forgetting my usual high caloric drink at the beginning of the race may have set off a chain of problematic events, resulting in no fewer than 8 violent vomiting episodes at Mile Markers 10, 18 & 23 of the run. In several other spots, I experienced serious delirium, dehydration, and near heat stroke, all while refusing medical help for most of it, in fear of disqualification if I needed an IV. So why do it? I suppose my journey to Ironman started when I weighed 265 lbs., and I found a will to change, to stretch the bounds and be better. Athletes at all levels, who exercise regularly, have that desire to improve, the want to do something epic, a challenge if you will, and the discipline to get up and do something about it. We all have that story and few of us get to the next level on our own. Triathlon is a sport with camaraderie like no other – bringing working out with buddies to a whole new level. I have formed some of my tightest friendships by training, racing, traveling, sweating, suffering, pushing and yes, puking, with so many great people. We push each other to be better every day. Pros and beginners shoulder to shoulder on the same course, up against the same challenges, all with the same hunger – risking life and limb just the same. The finish line at Ironman tells some of the story, as all the finishers come back to the finish line to cheer everyone else through. Thousands of athletes, spectators, race volunteers, tourists, friends and family make a symphony of noise for the racers as we all finish a long and tough day, triumphant to have taken on such a crazy race, and exhausted for having done so. Mike Reilly, the MC of all Ironman finish lines for the last 26 years, is a leader in the sport. He runs up and down the 1/4 mile long finishing chute for as long as there are racers coming through it – welcoming them, patting them on the back, high-fiving them, offering congratulations to the exhausted racers, and announcing them all an “Ironman” as they finish. Even those that finish after the 17 hour cut off get that same treatment from Mike – like the guy I saw in Texas who finished in 17 hours and 30 seconds. He did not receive the title of “Ironman” by Mike that day, but he is just as much one of us for completing the journey. ASK THE EXPERT Hiring a Roofing Contractor: 3 Misconceptions and 4 Things You Must Do!
R
BY FRANK ISTUETA, OWNER, ISTUETA ROOFING
eplacing your roof is not like buying a car; you can’t go from one dealer to the next to find the best price. It’s a service that should be provided by a home remodeling company you can trust to provide a superior service and expert installation, while respecting your time and your hard-earned money. Let’s face it, as consumers all we really want is to find a good, qualified contractor we can trust who will do what they say, do it right and do it on time. You may have heard or read the “nightmare stories” about high pressure salespeople, botched jobs, fly-by-night companies, unfinished jobs and so on. So how can you keep these from being your story too? Before you narrow down your list of contractors and begin planning the interview process, please take a moment to read these common misconceptions about roofing contractors. 1. If the BBB doesn’t have any complaints against the contractor, he must be qualified. Just because a contractor doesn’t have any complaints with the BBB, doesn’t mean he is a reputable professional; you need to investigate the company further. 2. Choosing the contractor who offers the lowest price saves you money. Some people tend to look for the lowest price. On a low estimate, you must ask yourself what shortcuts are being taken and if you should trust the contractor. 3. If a person claims to have many years of experience, they must do quality work. Take experience claims with a grain of salt. Just because a contractor claims to have twenty years of experience doesn’t mean you will have a positive experience with them.
Okay, so now that you know what to look out for, you’re ready to find the right contractor to complete your roofing project. Be sure to do the following: 1. Visit their place of business: Make sure you visit the contractor’s office. Meet the team you’ll be putting your trust in. These are the people that will be taking care of you and your home project, and you deserve to know that you’ll be in good hands. Visiting the contractor’s office will tell you almost everything you need to know about them. 2. Friends and family: Ask your friends and family about contractors that they trust and which ones to avoid. This is your most trustworthy resource. But you should also do your homework on other contractors, just in case. 3. References: Ask your potential contractor to give you multiple client references. Ask for references that are near you and ask for ones that have recently been completed as well. It’s even better if they can give you references for projects similar to yours. 4. Repeat/Referral Business: When a significant source of a contractor’s business is derived from repeat and referral business, it indicates that his clients are pleased with the work they’ve received. So there you have it…all the information you need to hire the right contractor for your roof replacement project. If you follow these tips, your project will run smoothly… we promise you. MUSIC NEWS Invest in Your Future: Shop Locally
I
BY PENNY DANIELS
t’s is Friday night. Your son wants to join the band and you were supposed to stop at the local music store all week and check out prices. The deadline is Monday. You just ran out of time this week. What do you do? Some people would go to the internet and search for the musical instrument. Some people may even purchase the instrument online, pay the outrageous shipping costs, and hope it arrives on time for the Monday afternoon band try-out. That is one option. The other option is calling your local music store and getting advice from a musical expert. You will get to discuss the options with a “live”, customer service-focused person!
Why Shop Locally?
»» Boost the Local Economy: Shopping locally will boost the local economy and keep the community financially stable. »» Easier and Close to Home: The music store of your choice may be right around the corner. Give them a call, set up an appointment or just stop in and talk about your options and opportunities. »» Find Unique, One-of-a-Kind Items: Local stores often stock items that are made locally, and aren’t available elsewhere. »» Support Local Entrepreneurs: Gives you an opportunity to thank local business men and women for keeping their business open and boosting the local economy. Most of these business men and women are your family, friends, and neighbors. »» Help Build Your Local Community: Buy locally. If the businesses are not supported, the local groups tend to disappear, making it difficult to recruit families to your community. Real estate sales suffer and you no longer have a thriving community. »» Receive some GREAT Advice and Customer Service: Local businesses may be in a position to offer discounts that you may not otherwise receive. They may have special offers that you can only take advantage of if you shop at their store. And the customer service is spot on … they normally treat you like family! »» Try Before you Buy: What an advantage this is … have you ever purchased an item online, only to find out you really don’t like it? At a local business it’s easier to sample the product. Although shopping online may be a convenience, is it the best option when you are looking for musical equipment, music lessons or just want to get advice from professionals? Probably not. See the value of shopping locally for yourself … you won’t be disappointed. Let the summer begin! Enjoy the sounds of music and have FUN!
Musicians Discount Center in Miami help you find the guitar that suits you and fits your budget, too. They are the one stop music shop that has been sharing their expertise with others for many years. They offer new and used instruments, instrument rentals, rent to own programs and music lessons. Stop in and let the sounds of music begin in your house today. Contact Musicians Discount Center at 305-255-9466 or visit them online at www.musiciansdiscountcenter.net. PET CARE Acupuncture for Pets?
B
BY DR. MARTA SANCHEZ EMDEN
ut Doc, will those needles hurt my pet? Aren’t those too many needles for my little pet? Will this acupuncture really work? These are a few questions that veterinary doctors trained and certified in acupuncture get all the time. Even though it has been a staple of Eastern Medicine for thousands of years, it is in the last 20 years or so that acupuncture has become a main stream modality in Veterinary Medicine. In fact, many veterinary schools today include in their curriculum introductory courses on the basics of veterinary acupuncture. Research for acupuncture in animals is strong and continually developing. Many general practitioners, board certified veterinary neurologists, and anesthesiologist are seeking the post doctoral Certification in Veterinary Acupuncture. Why? Because it works. Acupuncture is a modality within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It refers to the insertion of thin metal needles into specific sites of the body, called acupuncture points, for the treatment or prevention of diseases and pain. Acupuncture also refers to other types of stimulation of these points, such as an injection of fluid (e.g. B12), electrical stimulation, light stimulation with low level laser, or local heating with a smoldering herb called “moxibustion”. But how does it work? Acupuncture induces changes in the function of the brain that lead to improvements at the level of the endocrine, autonomic, and circulatory systems. It also facilitates changes at the mental-emotional level. The analgesic effect caused by electrocupuncture, for example, is specifically mediated by the release of endorphins, serotonin and norepinephrine, and by the acupuncture’s ability to aid in muscle relaxation. Acupuncture works better for chronic problems by decreasing pain and inflammation, increasing energy levels, and reinforcing the action of the immune system. From the TCM point of view, it corrects the imbalances present in the body. It is not a cure all, but can work very well when indicated. It is very commonly used in conditions such as paresis, paralysis, musculoeskeletal problems (e.g., arthritis), skin disorders, respiratory disorders, gastrointestinal disorders, epilepsy, and selective reproductive problems. Acupuncture also provides important advantages to pets with cancer including pain reduction, elimination of nausea, and improved glandular function following radiation therapy. To see if your pet is a good candidate for acupuncture therapy, a diagnosis is always the first step. This means that the doctor requires the same historical, physical and diagnostic information that is required for a conventional veterinary treatment. Aggressive pets are not candidates for acupuncture therapy. A typical trial period for acupuncture involves an “induction stage” of two to three treatments per week for at least two weeks. Since the effects of acupuncture are cumulative in nature, the benefits of the therapy will be short lived initially (1-2 days), but will then accumulate producing longer lasting effects. Once these longer lasting effects have been reached, the frequency of the sessions are tapered down to the minimum that will maintain the beneficial effects (“maintenance” stage”). Chronic problems often require longer induction stages, and the pet may need prolonged and perhaps lifelong maintenance. There are many reasons why we may not see a response to the acupuncture therapy. Among the main reasons to consider are an incorrect diagnosis, incorrect positioning of the needles, incorrect combination of points (acupuncture prescription), incorrect depth of insertion of the needles, incorrect manipulation of the needles once inserted in the skin, or simply because the specific medical condition is non-responsive to the treatment. When looking for a veterinary acupuncturist, its important to remember that acupuncture is considered a medical procedure and, by law, only a licensed Veterinarian can provide the therapy. In addition, the doctor must have been awarded the post graduTo Advertise in The Florida Villager, Please call 786-505-1817
ate Certification in Veterinary Acupuncture by an institution recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Lastly, as with any other medical modality, the medical instrument is only as good as the trained hands using it. Seek a veterinary acupuncturist with many years of experience in acupuncture therapy and Traditional Chinese Medicine for best results. Veterinary acupuncture is a safe, natural, and effective treatment alternative for pets with no adverse effects. When considering treatments for your ailing pet, you owe it to them to put acupuncture at the top of your list. Dr Marta Sanchez-Emden is founder of Animal Health and Rehab Center in South Miami. She is a certified in both, Veterinary Acupuncture and Veterinary Rehabilitation. She has been practicing in Miami for over 20 years and is featured regularly on national TV and radio shows including Despierta America and Tu Desayuno Alegre (Univision) educating the public on pet topics. xes, you can’t live with them and, by God, you wish you could live without them. But, when you have children, even a fairy Godmother can’t make that wish come true. A huge portion of my practice is helping exes deal with exes, and it’s sad that so much pain is created. I say created instead of caused because most of the time, one of them is deliberate in his/her actions, in order to inflict emotional or financial pain on the other. The energy it takes to behave this way, and the length of time the behavior continues, would have had Einstein scratching his head as to the logic behind it. Here are several questions that I’m sure plenty of you can relate to.

What can I do to stop my ex-husband from telling lies about me to anyone who will listen? I’m losing friends left and right. All I can say is that they weren’t really your friends. Those that know you will know to turn a deaf ear. Shakespeare was a wise man when he said, “the lady doth protest too much.” Don’t lose your credibility by defending yourself. Spend that time making new friends. An attorney friend of mine told me once that the friends you make after your divorce are the friends that you will have for a long time. Hope you find comfort in that. My daughter comes home from her dad’s wearing makeup and clothes that my exhusband’s live-in gives her. They are clearly not age appropriate. I have tried talking to both of them but they are smug and tell me they will do what they wish on “their watch.” Just a wild guess here, but I would bet you feel like jumping through the phone and strangling them? No doubt this is tough. You feel walked over as a mother by the livein, feel powerless with your ex, and the bad guy with your daughter. Have no fear; your inner strength is here! Simply put, you are going to take back the power. Send an email to your ex in a very professional way outlining why you feel these are inappropriate (this is for documentation purposes). After that, no need to say another word. When your daughter comes home dressed that way, calmly explain to her that you understand how she might find the make up and clothes “cool,” but that it is not age appropriate. Again, you understand she is allowed to wear them at her dad’s, but not here. Ask her to change and tone down the make up. Don’t bad mouth the dad or live-in, just be matter of fact. Don’t get into a discussion with her, as this is not up for debate. You might not be able to control what goes on at his house, but you certainly can take back the power in your home. I have also known a time or two when the clothes goblins come out at night and whisk those clothes to the netherworld, never to be seen again. When my children come back from their dad’s, all I hear about is the girlfriend and what fun they had. I’m sick of hearing it. What can I say to them without sounding bitter? I will assume they are “filling you in” and trying not to be mean. That assumption in place, understand that they are viewing this as sharing with you. As painful as it might be, you want to keep open communication with them. Try steering the conversation in the direction you would like it to go. When you feel enough time has passed, perhaps guide them to do homework, or get settled in. Let me acknowledge your feelings here for a minute. I know it’s really hard to have your children gone only to come home and extol how great the weekend at dads was, especially if you have spent your weekend organizing closets with your cat. So, let me leave you with this thought. Would you rather have your children spending an entire weekend where they are unhappy? The depth of a mother’s love knows no bounds, even when it adds to her own unhappiness. Debbie Martinez, MA is a certified, mindful life coach specializing in divorce (aka: heartbreak coach). TRAVEL NEWS Gateway to Adventure…The San Juan Islands
O
BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ
ff the coast of Seattle, Washington lays 172 islands known as the San Juan Islands, the gems of the Pacific Northwest. There is where my journey begins. Boarding Kenmore Air at Sea-Tac for my quick 40 minute flight over to Friday Harbor, San Juan Island, I felt an extreme sense of anticipation. The beauty and the serenity of the snow tipped mountains fading into the deep green forests, which in turn melded with the sparkling blue water below, was my constant companion from the cockpit. Ahead lay a world unknown to me and one I ended up not wanting to leave. Nestled in at the Tucker House Inn/Harrison House with all its flowers blooming, I stepped onto my little balcony and gazed out at the rooftops of the town and the harbor below. The weather in May was glorious, so off I went to the local farmer’s market, where I caught my first glimpse into the island life style that is constantly reflected back at you by the flowers, the friendly faces, and the quaintness of Friday Harbor. From there I drove to Cattle Point and hiked to the lighthouse for a breathtaking view of South Beach, with its mammoth piles of driftwood lining the shore. Onward and upward, I made my way to the American and English camps. Back in the 1800’s there was a 12-year standoff between the two groups known as The Pig War. Today, these camps are national historic parks with historic buildings, nature trails and wildlife. Next stop was Pelindaba Lavender Farm. Fields and fields of organically certified lavender is harvested and handcrafted into products of every type, which you can purchase in their store. Beware, you have been warned, this store is dangerous to your wallet. Before stopping for lunch at Roche Harbor, I made a pit stop at San Juan Island

Distillery for a few swigs of their gold medal apple brandy. Established in 1886, Roche Harbor is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The intimate feel of Hotel de Haro’s lobby with its fireplace and creaking floorboards only added to its charm. The view of the marina and the prevalence of topsiders disembarking from sailboats drove home the seduction of “Island Time.” My walk into town for dinner at Vinny’s Restorante left me ready to call it a night. Tucked under my big quilt with the distant sound of the ferry horn, I fell into a deep sleep. Not sure if it was the sunlight streaming through my window or the church bells from town that woke me, but a new day had dawned in Friday Harbor and I didn’t want to waste a minute. Breakfast at the Tucker House was a gastronomic delight: homemade biscuits, gravy, scrambled eggs and salmon. The chef had made the granola that morning and I left with two bags to bring home. Grabbing my windbreaker, I meandered down Spring Street to the landing to catch my boat for the today’s big event: Whale Watching! There is nothing quite like being out on the water when the seas are calm, the sun is out and the scenery is breathtaking. So was my trip that day. Harbor seals, sea lions and porpoises kept us entertained as we continued to scout for whales. So much left to do: visit the alpaca farm, kayaking, exploring all the shops and galleries in town, bike riding, but my time had run out as my ferry was set to pull away from the dock at 5:45. I watched the town fade from view, closed my eyes and felt the breeze ever so gently brush across my face. “What could be better than whence I came?” Glancing at my itinerary I read, “Next port, Orcas Island.” Well, we shall see.

CAR CARE Cars Have Changed for the Better
I
BY M&R AUTO REPAIR
have been driving cars since the mid-70’s and repairing them since the early 80’s, and boy have they changed. In the cold weather you prayed they would start and then had to wait for them to warm up before you could drive them safely. Today you turn the key and they start and off you go. Cars are running the best they have ever run. They are getting fantastic fuel economy and have impressive power from much smaller engines. We now have creature comforts we never thought of before; adaptive cruise control, heated & air conditioned seats, seats that massage you while you drive, back up sensors and cameras, zone air conditioning, hybrid technology and of course connectivity with GPS navigation. We have come a long way from the first horseless carriage to today’s automobile. So has the repair and maintenance. You may not believe it but your car requires far less repairs then even before. The combination of better technology and automated production has given the consumer an extremely reliable product. Unfortunately, you still need to maintain your vehicle. Maintenance service is more critical than ever. Make sure you follow your manufacturer’s recommended service intervals and that your service person uses the proper lubricants in your vehicle. Neglecting your maintenance will definitely cost you, and cost you big. Cheap service is not an option. Question the person servicing your vehicle. Will they use the proper weight oil? It used to be there were only a couple of different oil blends for engines; straight weight and 10w30 or 10w40. Today’s engines vary widely. There are 0w20, 5w20, 5w30, 10w30, 20w60 and then all the same in synthetics. Your vehicle
may or may not require synthetic oil. It matters! The same gauntlet occurs with transmission fluids, power steering fluids and differential fluids. All fluids need to be changed on a regular basis; they are the lifeblood of your car. Check your owner’s manual and speak with your service professional. It’s critical you know when to have your vehicle serviced. Following these service recommendations will help ensure your vehicle runs well and problem free for several hundred thousand miles. That’s right, several HUNDRED THOUSAND miles. Use to be at 100,000 miles your car was pretty much worn out and in need of a major overhaul from bumper to bumper. Not anymore. I regularly see vehicles with 200,000 miles on them and running strong. Mind you, all of these drivers have been religious with their maintenance. Maintenance, maintenance, maintenance! It’s the recipe for happy car ownership. Find yourself a mechanic you like and trust. That might be a challenge. Do your research. Google them, ask friends whom they use for maintenance, visit the shop before you need major repairs and ask lots of questions. If you don’t like the way they answer or talk down to you, find a different shop. There are good ones out there. Once you find a good one, be loyal and recommend them. A good mechanic will save you money in the long run and give you peace of mind. Buckle up, no texting and smile. M&R Auto Repair has been serving South Florida since April of 1985. This is Part III of a 3-part Series dedicated to how we should prepare for, behave during, and prevent security incidents. Part I dealt with Personal Security; Part II encompassed Residential and Workplace Security; and Part III now covers Cyber Security. The US Government has declared that the “cyber threat is one of the most serious economic and national security challenges we face as a nation” and that “America’s economic prosperity in the 21st century will depend on cybersecurity.” Also, estimates indicate that about 1 in 10 kids are currently suffering from the devastating effects of cyber bullying. In response to these growing concerns, the Department of Homeland Security launched the Stop.Think.Connect Campaign: STOP: Before you use the Internet, take time to understand the risks and learn how to spot potential problems. THINK: Take a moment to be certain the path ahead is clear. Consider how your actions online could impact your safety, or your family’s. CONNECT: Enjoy the Internet with greater confidence, knowing you’ve taken the right steps to safeguard yourself and your computer. Cyber threats may take many forms, from identity theft to business sabotage to children’s bullying. The following tips are provided to help prevent the entry of these surreptitious threats into our personal cyber domains. Password Protection – Setting strong passwords is a basic cyber security measure. Change them regularly, and ensure not to share them with anyone. They must not include your name, your kids’ or pets’ names, or other well known information about yourself. Combine upper and lower case letters. Also, avoid using common words or passphrases. Instead, break up words with numbers and punctuation marks or symbols. For example, use “@” instead of “A”, and “3” instead of “E”. Software Protection – Install updates to maintain your operating system, browser, and other critical software optimized. Do it by applying the latest service packs and patches. When browsing, do not click any link that you can’t verify. Email from unknown people or with a strange subject line should never be opened, especially with attachments that you weren’t expecting. Delete the message without reading it, if you do not know the sender of an attachment. Backing up your data frequently will protect it in the event of an operating system crash, hardware failure, or virus attack. Do it! Identity Protection – Consider installing “Identity Finder”, a software tool to help prevent identity theft. It can search for, protect, and dispose of personal information stored on your Windows, Mac, or Linux computer, file shares, or external media. This information includes credit card numbers, bank account numbers, Social Security numbers, birthdates, passwords, driver’s license numbers, addresses, passports, employee identification numbers, maiden names, or other data you determine. Look into it! Prevent Cyberbullying – Per the US Dept. of Health, kids who are cyberbullied are more likely to use alcohol and drugs, skip school, experience inperson bullying, be unwilling to attend school, receive poor grades, have lower selfesteem, and have more health problems. US DHHS recommends to “be aware of what your kids are doing online. Know the sites your kids visit and their online activities. Ask where they’re going, what they’re doing, and who they’re doing it with. Parental control filtering software or monitoring programs for monitoring your child’s online behavior are available. Be clear about what sites they can visit and what they are permitted to do when they’re online. Help them be smart about what they post or say. Tell them not to share anything that could hurt or embarrass themselves or others. Once something is posted, it is out of their control whether someone else will forward it,” with potentially longlasting consequences. The good news is that we can proactively shape the cyberenvironments where both our children and our data circulate. A combination of software tools and security practices (along with sound parenting) will help us protect our privacy, our information, and through prevention, our own children. And if we think about it, folks, what could be more important? Luis Ortega is a Certified Firearms Instructor. He owns and operates Security Arms International (SAI), a personal defense store and security consulting firm in Palmetto Bay, Florida. You may reach him at ceo@saiops.com. LEGALLY SPEAKING Three Major Mistakes by Homeowners When it Comes to Association Dues
M
BY OMAR J. ARCIA, ESQ., FORECLOSURE DEFENSE AND BANKRUPTCY PROTECTION ATTORNEY
any homeowners that have fallen behind on their mortgage payments, also make the decision to stop paying their homeowners’ association dues. If a homeowner is trying to save their home, non payment of association dues is perhaps one of the worst decisions they can make. Homeowners can quickly find themselves defending two foreclosure actions, one from the mortgage company and one from the homeowner’s association. The following are three major mistakes by homeowners when it comes to collection of association dues. Only the mortgage company has the right to foreclose on a home. This is just not true. Florida law permits homeowners’ associations to place a lien against your property for the value of any unpaid dues or assessments, quickly foreclose, and take possession of the property to recover the value of that lien. Generally speaking, there are fewer defenses to an association action than a mortgage foreclosure action. Also, because the amount in controversy is usually less than $15,000, association foreclosure actions may be filed in the lesser backlogged county courts. This means that association foreclosure actions are completed much quicker than mortgage foreclosure cases – usually in less than 6 months. An association will not foreclose if there is no equity in the property. Just the opposite is the case. Since there is a significant mortgage ahead of the association lien, at a foreclosure auction, the association itself is usually the highest bidder and becomes the new “owner” of the property. More and more homeowners’ associations are foreclosing on South Florida homes in order to take possession of the property and rent it out to recover the unpaid dues, until and when the mortgage company forecloses. Accordingly, an association may foreclose and deprive you of your property if there is equity or not. There is no need to hire an attorney to defend an association foreclosure action. Like in a mortgage foreclosure action, there are a number of defenses to an association foreclosure action which may only be effectively developed in court by a law firm with experience and specialized knowledge on how to defend association foreclosure actions. An attorney can also help you negotiate a structured settlement of your association debt with affordable payments to avoid foreclosure. There are also bankruptcy related strategies that can be implemented to reduce or wipe out homeowners’ association debt altogether. If you have fallen behind on your association payments, or recently received an association foreclosure action, it is important that you retain a well qualified law firm, like the Arcia Law Firm, to fully represent your interests. The Arcia Law Firm is privileged to represent dozens of homeowners in our community in association foreclosure and collection actions. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new consumer DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine you will receive a FREE copy during your appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our legal team. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free consultation, or visit www.arcialawfirm.com for more information.
