Miami Children’s Hospital Makes Headway with Advanced Pediatric Care Pavilion BY BROOKE BLOOM LAM
M
IAMI CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL (MCH) HAS BEEN BUSY. IN ADDITION TO offering exceptional treatment, the Hospital has been undergoing major improvements to its facility. The Advanced Pediatric Care Pavilion is one such project, which will be a 212,000 square-foot facility that will enhance the care environment at the main hospital campus. MCH celebrated a significant milestone in the construction of its planned Advanced Pediatric Care Pavilion with the first “crunch” demolition of a vacant structure to make way for the six-story pavilion. Once completed, the new space will include the latest medical technologies and additional family-friendly amenities to support patients and families receiving care. The Advanced Pediatric Care Pavilion is being designed with guidance from patients, families and caregivers to ensure that their needs are at the center of the enhancements. The Lean business improvement model was utilized to promote productivity and efficiency throughout the space. MCH is nationally recognized for its use of Lean methodologies in its business practices. Highlights of the Advanced Pediatric Care Pavilion will include: »» Expanded critical care capacity with new, state-of-theart individual neonatal, pediatric, and cardiac intensive care, neurology and hematology/oncology floor »» Individual rooms in the critical care and inpatient units »» A 10-bed obstetrical unit for babies who have been pre-diagnosed with a congenital condition and require immediate intervention upon birth »» Family-centered amenities including dining, concierge
services, a business center and more »» An expanded bone marrow transplant unit which has been partially supported by Fundación Teleton “We are delighted to celebrate this significant milestone in a project to which so many have dedicated their hearts and souls,” said Dr. Narendra Kini, President and CEO of Miami Children’s Hospital. “The Advanced Pediatric Care Pavilion is not only an important enhancement for patients and caregivers, it also supports our longstanding commitment to delivering world-class care to families in our community and beyond.” The Hospital improvements broke ground in December 2011 with the already completed enhancement and expansion of the Radiology Department, now including additional leading-edge, imaging equipment. Additionally, The Miguel “Mike” B. Fernandez Family Pediatric Trauma Center, a new state-of-the-art treatment facility for South Florida’s only freestanding pediatric trauma center, is expected to be completed by the end of this year. Funding for this project is being made possible through the efforts of Together for the Children, The Campaign for Miami Children’s Hospital. Currently, MCH Foundation is dedicating all of its resources to Together for the Children, which aims to raise $150 million by 2017 and will help provide advanced care for children and families through funding MCH priorities such as the construction of the Advanced Pediatric Care Pavilion. To learn more and help support this initiative please visit www.mchf.org/donate or call Miami Children’s Health Foundation at 305.666.2889.

Coral Gables Is Going Hog Wild For Fundraising BY BROOKE BLOOM LAM

Piggy Banks dedicated to the Foundation’s funds was on display for everyone to see, and the hard work and effort that the Coral Gables Senior High School art students put into decorating them was celebrated. Participating merchants are hosting these banks at their business locations, along with a plaque with the specific fund’s name, stating that the collections from the pig support the designated fund, administered by the Coral Gables Community Foundation. If you see a pig at one of the designated locations, post a photo of yourself making a contribution to the pig on the Foundation’s Facebook page and Instagram using #SpotThePigCG. The person who posts the most photos by November 10th will win a gift certificate to Swine Southern Table & Bar.
ARIOUS CORAL GABLES ESTABLISHMENTS are welcoming several new visitors this month. A gander into participating stores and restaurants will reveal specially painted piggy banks. These banks are not merely for decoration, but are rather part of The Coral Gables Community Foundation’s fall fundraising initiative to raise awareness for the funds administered by the Foundation and as an opportunity to “bring home the bacon” for those funds. The Piggy Bank Campaign launched shortly after Labor Day and will run through December. “[The Campaign] is a fun initiative to raise awareness and funds for the causes and organizations supported by the Foundation, while also engaging the local high school art students and the businesses community,” said Mary Snow, Executive Director of the Coral Gables Community Foundation. “It’s been an exciting project for us and great to see the beautiful piggy banks around town!” “The project was a wonderful opportunity for our students to be involved with the process of charitable fund raising,” said Ms. Stapleton. “The students had a lot of fun collaborating with each other on the ideas and the thematic directions given to us by each of the fund drive coordinators.” On September 9, 2014, Coral Gables Community Foundation fund holders, Board members and Merrick Society Members gathered at Swine Southern Table & Bar in Coral Gables for the official launch of the Piggy Bank Campaign. Children’s Film Festival to Shine at Coral Gables Art Cinema BY BROOKE BLOOM LAM
L
OOKING FOR A CULTURAL EVENT TO ENJOY with your whole family? The second annual Miami International Children’s Film Festival will take place from October 17-19 at the Coral Gables Art Cinema. Families throughout the community will have the opportunity to experience a perfect blend of global “art house” films for children of all ages, as well as film workshops, parties and talks with visiting filmmakers. The Festival will kick off its Opening Night celebration with a reception featuring bites by Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza and Whole Foods Market, and special drinks for kids and adults. The reception will be followed by the screening of the French film “Minuscule: Valley of the Lost Ants” in 3D. Guests of the Festival will enjoy a showcase of films from around the world including France, Brazil, Uruguay, Spain, Taiwan, Latvia, U.S. and more. Films include animation and live-action, as well as features and shorts. Other event highlights will include Q&A sessions with various directors and hands-on animation workshops for kids and teens in partnership with Coral Gables Museum. The Festival’s partner, the New York International Children’s Film Festival, has been lauded as the country’s most prominent festival of its kind. “This year we have worked closely with the veteran festival staff in New York to present a unique set of films that
has global reach and includes something for everyone,” said Robert Rosenberg, Director of the Coral Gables Art Cinema. “We are thrilled to be able to provide families with this fantastic cultural event of carefully curated and age-appropriate films in the heart of South Florida, helping them foster a love of cinema,” added Midge Blumberg-Krams, Chair of the Festival Committee. The various events are tailored for specific age groups. The “Kids Mix” programs are specially curated for kids as young as 3 years old and feature 12 short and wonderful animations from around the world. Most other film screenings are designated for ages 5 and up or 9 and up. The Stop Motion Animation Workshop, at Coral Gables Museum, will be offered twice – once for ages 6-12 and once for ages 13-18. This workshop teaches students the basic principles of stop-motion animation, allowing them to create their own content. On Sunday, October 19, all ages can enjoy the Festival Fair featuring face painting, temporary tattoos, live music, and treats. To see a full festival film schedule or to buy tickets, visit the Cinema’s website at www. gablescinema.com or call 786.385.9689. Other groups that will be collaborating with the Miami International Children’s Film Festival include the Coral Gables Museum, the Florida Film Institute and Miami-Dade Public Schools.

Last year, the first ever Rock ‘N Run event raised over $40,000 for breast and ovarian cancer causes supporting research, awareness and support for women in our community. With the hopes of surpassing last year’s goals, the Rock ‘N Run team has been busy. Rabbi Rachel Greengrass of Temple Beth Am, a breast cancer survivor herself, has rallied for the event and Temple Beth Am has graciously donated their facilities for the second year. “As a breast cancer survivor, I have come to understand that there is a big difference between being cured and being healed,” said Rabbi Greengrass. “This event, while it raises money to help bring a cure, is a healing event. An opportunity to comfort and be comfort and be comforted. To make a positive from the experiences of women diagnosed with breast and ovarian cancer. To make the world a better place. It is truly healing,” she added. A unique fitness event, the Rock ‘N Run begins with a warm-up by Orange Theory Fitness, followed by the option of a challenging and fun 5K Orange Theory Fitness walk/ run, or a high energy dance fitness class led by Videosync’s legendary Jay Marcos. The exercise events will be followed by a full breakfast buffet made up of foods donated by various local vendors. The Rock ‘N Run is an incredible day of health, strength, spirit and community and will support various charities including the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center-Cancer Link, Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, Women’s Breast Health Initiative, Sandy B. Muller Breast Cancer Foundation, Sharsheret and FORCE. “Besides raising money for research and giving assistance to women in our community, the event’s objective is to raise awareness of breast and ovarian cancer to enhance prevention and early detection,” Hollub said, adding that “knowledge is power.” In addition to the popular Rock ‘N Run, two other fundraising events will also take place this year. On October 7, Temple Beth Am will present a special showing of “Cancer No Evidence of Disease,” a film that follows music and medicine joining forces in the fight for life, as surgeons are transformed into rising rock stars, and patients and loved ones jump on the bandwagon. In addition to the screening, Temple Beth Am is welcoming the holiday of Sukkot to “think pink, feel teal.” From October 7-12, a “Pink and Teal Healing Sukkah” will be erected at the Temple which will welcome visitors to meditate, to pray, to stretch, to sit and to decorate it with prayers for themselves and for those they love who are in need of healing. Rock ‘N Run is a not for profit organization. Temple Beth Am is located at 5950 N. Kendall Drive. Please visit rocknrun.org to sign-up or for more information. Palmetto Elementary School Helps Feed Students In Need Over The Weekend BY BROOKE BLOOM LAM
T
HERE ARE OVER TWENTY MILLION CHILDREN IN this country who are at risk of hunger. The consequences of hunger are much more than a growling stomach. Poor nutrition can result in a weaker immune system, increased hospitalization, lower IQ, shorter attention spans, and lower academic achievement. Children who are fed during the school week by federal government programs are often left without food over the weekend. Blessings in a Backpack was created to fill this need by providing elementary school children who are on the federal Free and Reduced Price Meal Program with a backpack of food to take home for 38 weekends during the school year. Backpack food includes easy-to-prepare, ready-to-eat foods, like granola bars, juice boxes, mac and cheese, and oatmeal. Studies show that students who participate in the Blessings in a Backpack program show marked improvement in school attendance, test scores, behavior, and health. Locally, Palmetto Elementary School has gotten involved with the Blessings in a Backpack program by providing qualified students with a bag of groceries each Friday. Pinecrest Mayor Cindy Lerner and MDCPS School Board Vice-Chair Dr. Larry Feldman joined Palmetto Elementary Principal Eric Torres, Counselor Julie Astuto, Program Coordinators Elizabeth Wasserman and Kim Miller, and students who make up the Blessings in a Backpack committee for a kickoff event on September 18 in the school cafeteria. The event was designed to generate awareness and support for Palmetto
Elementary’s chapter of this national program, which serves more than 70,000 children at 670 schools in 44 states nationwide. Palmetto Elementary launched its chapter of the program two and a half years ago, and it now serves approximately 60 students each week. “This school has always believed family comes first,” remarked Dr. Feldman, during remarks to students, parents, faculty, and guests. Mayor Lerner noted that the event was being held on National Blessings in a Backpack Day, as designated by the U.S. Conference of Mayors. She pledged to promote the program to counterparts throughout the area in an effort to get other schools and communities involved. The program concluded with an opportunity for all those present to fill backpacks, which were handed out the next day, the first distribution of the year. Palmetto Elementary School’s Blessings in a Backpack program enjoys support from local businesses such as Fresh Market, which was in attendance at the event, as well as sponsorship this year by the law firm of Weil, Gotshal, & Manges, LLP. The firm held a fundraising evening, with refreshments and silent auction, earlier in the month to provide a funding base for the year. They also collected school supplies to be distributed to students with the first backpack handout of the year. “The love this program brings is a reminder of the incredible relationship between students, parents, staff, and surrounding community members,” noted Principal Torres. “This commitment and family atmosphere shows a lesson and a level of caring that cannot be taught in any book.”

Gulliver set to induct 5 new members into its Athletic Hall of Fame
W
ITH MORE THAN THREE DECADES OF ATHLETIC HERITAGE TO CELEBRATE, Gulliver formed the Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010. Spearheaded by the Athletic Department and the Alumni Association, the Hall was established to permanently recognize and honor coaches, administrators, student athletes, athletic teams, and friends of the athletic program of Gulliver who have made significant contributions to the advancement and reputation of the athletic program while demonstrating a high degree of sportsmanship, leadership, and character. On Saturday, November 8, the Athletic Hall of Fame will grow a little larger as four athletes and one tennis coach will be inducted. Three-sport athlete Shundra Colzie ‘99, track and field athlete Bryan Sharkey ‘05, multi-sport player Matt Sullivan ’88, recordsetting swimmer Paul Wallace ’84, and Tennis Coach Kelly Mulligan, will all be honored at a celebratory induction ceremony at Gulliver’s Preparatory School Campus.

Matt Sullivan
Shundra Colzie played basketball and softball from grades 7 through 12, and volleyball throughout high school, at the varsity level. As a result, she earned 16 varsity letters. She also earned spots on 14 Miami-Herald All-Dade First Teams. Shundra was a member of three athletic teams that together won over 400 games and matches, and was named the Miami-Dade Athlete of the Year in 1998 and 1999. After graduating from Gulliver Prep in 1999, Shundra attended Santa Fe State College for two years on a softball scholarship. In 2001, she received a softball scholarship to Florida State University, where she graduated in 2003 with a major in elementary education. Bryan Sharkey began competing for the Gulliver Prep Track Team in seventh grade, and holds school records in the 1,600-meter, 3,200-meter, 5-kilometer, half marathon, and 4x800-meter relay. He was a two-time state champion in the 4x800, undefeated cross-country team state champion in 2001 and was the first person (and still the only person) to win the 800-1600-3200-meter triple at the Miami-Dade County track championships. Bryan was the first individual runner to ever be named to first team All-Dade Cross-Country team all four years of high school. The Miami Herald named him cross-country and track and field distance runner of the year twice, and in 2005, he earned the title of Gulliver Athlete of the Year. He was also named the 2004-2005 Miami-Dade County Athlete of the Year. Following his success at Gulliver, Bryan attended Princeton University, where he was a four-time Ivy League cross-country varsity runner. In 2007, he competed in the pre-Olympic international track competition in China. Bryan continues to run professionally; his personal best finish was first place at the 2013 Palm Beach Marathon. During his four years at Gulliver, Matt Sullivan lettered in three sports – football, soccer and baseball. In football, he was a running back, defensive back and kicker for the 1987 state-ranked football team. As a senior, he gained more than 1,500 all-purpose yards and was named first team All-County and second team All-State by The Miami Herald. In soccer, he was Miami-Dade County’s leading scorer, with 29 goals his junior year, and earned first team All-County and first team All-State honors. As a senior, 20

Matt led his team to a second consecutive district title and again earned All-County and All-State honors. In baseball, he was a two-year starter at third base for the stateranked Raiders. Matt went on to play college football at Ithaca College, where he started four years as the team’s placekicker. He set numerous school records, including longest field goal (50 yards), most field goals in a season and career and most points scored in a season. In 1992, Matt graduated as a two-time National Champion (1988 and 1991) and was the school’s all-time leading scorer with 254 points. Paul Wallace was a member of the Gulliver Swim Team throughout his high school career, and was named first team All-Dade and All-State, for four consecutive years. He was also Miami-Dade Swimmer of the Year in 1982, 1983 and 1984, and set two state records for 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke in 1983. Paul, a swimming state runner-up all four years of high school, also won seven individual state titles. At the

University of Florida, he earned All-American Honors from 1985 through 1988, was named an Academic All-American in 1985 and was named SEC Swimmer of the Year in 1986. He won the World Swimming Championships gold medal in 4x100 freestyle relay in Spain, and set a record in the same category at the Pan Pacific Games in Japan. He also earned two gold medals at the U.S. Open Swimming Championships, and earned a silver medal in the 200-meter individual medley at the 1987 Pan Am Games. For more than 30 years, Coach Kelly Mulligan has been the heart and soul of Gulliver Tennis. During her tenure, the boys’ team advanced for the first time to the state championship tournament in 1984, and the girls’ team did so in 1985. Although the 1980s didn’t see any tennis state championships, in 1994, Kelly coached the girls’ team to Gulliver’s first tennis state championship. In 1997, her team won Gulliver’s second state championship. In 2006, 2007, 2013 and 2014, Kelly coached the girls’ team to state titles. The boys’ team won its first team title in 2003, won the title again in 2005 and went on to a five-year winning streak from 2007-2011. Back-to-back state boys’ tennis titles in 2013 and 2014 brought Gulliver’s total state titles under Coach Mulligan to 15. She has received numerous Tennis Coach of the Year awards, from The Miami Herald, the Florida Dairy Farmers and National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Coaches Association. One of her career highlights came in 2011, when the National High School Coaches Association named her its Boys’ Tennis National Coach of the Year. The Induction Ceremony will begin at 6:00pm. Tickets are priced at $75.00 per person and tables of 10 are available for $1,000.00. To be a sponsor, to order tickets and/or place a tribute message in the event program, please visit www.gulliverschools.org/ halloffame or call 786.709.4073. Nominations are accepted year-round, however, nominations must be received by January 1st of the year that the induction ceremony is being held for consideration in that year’s induction class. Palmetto High Gears up to Drive 4 Their School BY BROOKE BLOOM LAM
H
OW CAN YOU HELP PALMETTO SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL RAISE $6,000 IN ONE day? It’s as easy as taking a test drive in your favorite Ford model. On October 10, the community is invited to come out to the “Drive 4 UR School” event, located at Gus Machado Ford, to help Palmetto raise funds for its Campaign for Excellence. With a goal of seeking funds to support special projects at the school, the Campaign for Excellence was created apart from the PTSA reserve that funds more traditional school needs. Various school departments put in requests for funds from the PTSA that simply can’t be fulfilled. As a result, the Campaign for Excellence seeks to raise money from community donations and fundraisers to help support these special needs. Last year, the Campaign for Excellence, supported solely by local donations, purchased a much needed new Sound Board for the School’s Auditorium. This year, the money raised by the Drive 4 UR School event will help the Campaign fulfill requests from Palmetto’s TV Production Department, Language Arts Department, and the Activities Director.

In 2007, Ford Motor Company developed this program to help raise funds for local high schools. The Drive 4 UR School program creates an opportunity for schools and their clubs, groups and extracurricular activities, to raise money to continue or expand their operations. For every qualified test drive that’s completed at the event, Ford donates $20 to the school, with a goal of raising up to $6,000 total. Only one donation is made per family address. Machado Ford is one of the only dealerships in Dade County with a program like this. “It’s a very positive program,” says Lilliam Machado of Gus Machado Ford. “Drivers can try different cars and have a chance to ask questions.” Local donations will provide refreshments and foods for sale which will also benefit the Campaign. Marian Hasty, whose position on the PTSA board is “Special Projects”, started reaching out to Machado Ford two years ago. “Machado has held these events all over the community,” she said. “This event is a wonderful way to have Gus Machado Ford embrace our local community. By supporting us, they are supporting everyone in the Miami Palmetto Senior High School feeder pattern.” Though Machado Ford has run many of these events in the past, at schools such as Killian, Coral Reef, and Christopher Columbus, this is the first event that will be held at Machado Ford’s location. “We usually do [the event] at the school and bring ten or eleven cars,” Machado said, but “this time, we are doing it at the dealership.” Participants will have more cars to choose from and a larger venue to enjoy, “PHS has the burden of bringing everyone to us,” Machado adds. The location isn’t the only thing that makes this event stand out from the rest. Hopeful that the community will come out to support the school, “there will be a lot of new things going on that haven’t been at the other [events],” Machado said. She additionally praised Palmetto’s exceptional PTSA members. “They are working so hard and doing incredible things for their event,” Machado added.

ave you ever searched for the “perfect” ice cream? Well, look no further. Sub Zero, which was featured on TV’s Shark Tank twice, has opened its first store in Kendall at SW 107th Avenue next to Publix. Sub Zero creates “fresh” ice cream from scratch right in front of your eyes in a plume of nitrogen vapor and lights (the kids absolutely love the color light show) in about 15 seconds. There is no ice in the ice cream because it is made so fast. It’s the creamiest ice cream on the planet and perhaps the universe. Have a diet problem with ice cream? No more, their bases include premium, custard, low fat, no fat yogurt, no sugar added, lactose free and vegan/vegetarian almond milk so ice cream for every one. They also have the freshest and best tasting smoothies and milk shakes anywhere. And did we mention fresh homemade waffles. There are almost 40 flavors to chose from and about the same amount of mixins from fruits to nuts and candy. Unlike any other ice cream store, you choose every single item that goes into your creamy treat and they create it before your eyes with anything you want in it. They have stores all over the country and the world and are expanding rapidly, and Will Stuart, the franchise owner and area developer for Sub Zero Florida, along with his partner Ray Klein always are seeking entrepreneurs who would like to become a franchisee. Since “all” ice cream is made to order, it takes a little over two minutes to complete your order. But try to come early as the lines are sometimes long but well
worth the wait. They also have a loyalty program so the more you spend, the more you get in free addons and ice cream based on your point total, which is logged into their computer so no plastic cards are necessary. Prices are very reasonable — from $3.95 to $5.95, plus any add ins you might want but the first two flavors are free. They also make pies to go, sorbet, cakes and fresh brownies are coming soon. Believe it or not, there are actually 239,000 combinations you can choose from, but there also is a special menu board with sensations (12 of them) which are customers favorites so you just have to pick the number and it’s made instantly for you. There is nothing anywhere like Sub Zero Ice Cream and Yogurt. Once you try their product, you will not want to go anywhere else. They are located at 9065 SW 107th Ave., between Publix and Chicken Kitchen and are open SundayThursday, noon-10 p.m., and Fridays and Saturdays from noon until 11 p.m. Sub Zero has special catering where they come to you at schools, parties, weddings, social events, fairs and more. They also have fundraising events for your school or church or any other venue so drive on by and find out why this delicious new concept is sweeping the nation and the world. LOC AL POLITIC S
Local Businessman Runs for Council (Part 2) BY DANA BASTIEN
W
E HAD SUCH A FINE RESPONSE FROM THE FIRST INTERVIEW WITH DAVID Zisman, owner of Evening’s Delight Fireplaces & BBQ and candidate for Palmetto Bay Village Council, that we asked the dynamic businessman back for a second interview.
a r o f Time
e g n Cha
Mr. Zisman, at our last interview we briefly discussed your election platform. Are there other platform issues that you want to discuss today?
Thank you. Yes, there are several additional issues that I want to discuss. The first and foremost is our traffic problem. The most frequent complaint that I have heard from Village residents over the last year of campaigning are is traffic, traffic, and traffic. Palmetto Bay residents are very concerned about traffic congestion, speeding, and their safety. Pedestrians, cyclists, and pets are particularly affected by excess traffic and speeding. The solution to the Village’s traffic problem is traffic calming, which consists of stepped-up police enforcement, speed displays & speed bumps. In fact, I’m now being called the “Speed Bump Candidate.” Traffic calming will reduce vehicle speeds, improve safety, and enhance our quality of life. Once I am elected, I will implement appropriate traffic calming throughout the Village. The budgetary support for traffic calming is critical. I propose a separate line-item in the Village’s annual budget to pay for traffic calming measures. The separate lineitem will ensure that the funding is available, open to public review, and the Village can begin to solve this very serious but ignored issue here in Palmetto Bay.
Please continue.
Another important issue is canal bank erosion. A complex system of canals crisscross the Village of Palmetto Bay. Many residents are experiencing erosion of their properties. Canal bank erosion must be stabilized to eliminate property loss. I have already reached out to the South Florida Water Management District to address the erosion issue. Another critical issue is public safety. I have the greatest respect for our local police force, which is provided by an agreement with Miami-Dade County, but I also believe that our police force is underfunded in the area of modern crime-fighting technology. Technology such as mobile fingerprint readers are necessary for modern, effective law enforcement. I will also address the Dade County Police Dispatch System which has proven to be very slow in communicating with our Police Officers, putting all Palmetto Bay Residents at risk.
You are a businessman and a fiscal conservative. How will you approach the Village’s finances?
Running a business requires financial management skills which include budgeting. The Village should be run like a business. I believe that the Village is living beyond its means. It is no secret that the Village’s budget has dramatically increased over the last several years. Many new employees have been added, many new expenses have been incurred, and our reserves for a rainy day have been plundered to pay for it all. It’s time to tighten our belts and streamline the Village to the benefit of our taxpayers. All expenses must be examined village-wide to determine their necessity, legitimacy, and appropriateness. The proper development of our commercial sector and the associated tax income will reduce the burden of property taxes on our residents. We must determine what is necessary to do and then develop funding to do it. No more smoke and mirrors, just prudent, basic financial management. Finally, I will sponsor legislation to establish public quarterly council meetings on the status of the budget, and to ensure financial transparency by making sure that all financial transactions and agreements are posted on the Village’s website for all to see.
Do you have any closing remarks Mr. Zisman?
Yes, I do. Our Village needs action, and it needs action now; not five years from now. Our Village needs aware, experienced, and business-like leadership; not empty words, not more surveys, and a log-jam of impractical committees and boards. Palmetto Bay, we can do better. HYSICAL THERAPY…THE SCIENCE OF HEALING, the art of caring”. This is the motto of Florida Occupational Healthcare (FOHC). Just take a walk through their doors and you’ll see it’s true. Taking pride in the treatment of their patients on a medical and personal level, the staff at FOHC will treat you like family. Owner, Dr. Alex Pereda, opened the practice in 1998, believing he could make a difference. Knowing that physical therapy is about healing the body, Dr. Pereda also wanted to create an atmosphere that was client centered. As a professor at many local schools including Nova, Florida International University, and Miami-Dade College, Dr. Pereda teaches to “treat from your heart, not from your mind.” Dr. Pereda became a physical therapist as a second career after a spine fracture left him as a patient himself. After receiving his Bachelors in Physical Therapy from FIU in 1998, he later went on to receive his post-graduate doctorate degree from the University of St. Augustine, followed by a certificate in Manual Therapy, a certificate that only 5% of therapists nationwide possess. After working as a physical therapist for a few years, Dr. Pereda believed that his patients needed a higher level of care. He opened FOHC and hasn’t looked back since. After involving himself in many local little leagues and other local sports teams, including Tae Kwon Do, Dr. Pereda attended three Olympic Games and the 2013 PanAmerican Games as Medical Staff. He will be returning to the Olympics in Brazil in 2016, as well. Being an injured athlete is a difficult position to be in.

a week, patients are educated on exercises, stretches, and preventative measures that are to be done at home to help the recovery process. During visits, patients can expect to be treated for an average of 45-60 minutes. “As a manual therapist, every patient receives hands on care,” assures Dr. Pereda. This goes beyond the mere application of a hot pack and some electrical stimulation. FOHC is a great option for those patients who have an issue with scheduling, due to the office’s flexible hours. Offering extra-long hours, FOHC is open from 6:00 AM – 7:30 PM on weekdays and 6:30 AM – 3:30 PM on Saturdays. They do not close for lunch. FOHC is one of a few clinics that accepts all major insurance plans, and most others as well. Although a prescription is required for treatment billed to insurance, FOHC does take selfpay patients as well.

BIKRAM YOGA IS A SERIES OF TWENTY-SIX HATHA YOGA
SW 97th Avenue
HILE MOST PEOPLE THINK OF YOGA AS AN EXERCISE ONLY SUITED FOR the fit, flexible, and healthy, Bikram Yoga Falls owner, Sam Levine, is living proof that this is not the case. The student turned studio owner thanks Bikram Yoga for literally transforming his life. During high school, Levine found himself unable to walk. Herniated Disks caused by several injuries had left him bed ridden. “I finished high school over the phone,” Levine recalls. Through some outpatient treatments, he got back on his feet, but ten years later, his injury returned in full force. During a trip to Los Angeles in 2002, a friend introduced Levine to Bikram Yoga. After trying “everything under the sun,” Levine felt up to the challenge. The class was “unbelievable,” he remembers. Returning from his trip, this native Miamian was thrilled to find he could practice Bikram Yoga at home too. Though he dabbled in it on and off for several years, hard work and increased stress landed him back at square one, with pain and sciatica so severe he could hardly walk. While lying on the floor in pain, Levine decided to dedicate himself to the exercise by training to become a Bikram Yoga teacher. His injury intuition pushed him to the yoga training to heal. Sam Levine, Owner, Bikram Yoga Falls. Levine thought he would be in better shape to do the training, but “sparked by my haunting injury…I endured the most intense physical experience two times a day, almost every day, for nine weeks,” he shares. And it worked. Levine healed himself through the training. Although he went in with a different agenda, mainly for himself at the beginning, Levine learned that “to be a teacher, I really needed to understand what it was to be the student.” Now, he shouts his message from the rooftops. Unlike the common perception of yoga students, Levine promises that “I was not super bendy. I wasn’t some super fit person or very flexible.” Bikram Yoga is designed for beginners and all students can go at their own pace. “It has a system of checks and balances,” Levine explains, “which won’t allow you to overextend or hurt yourself. If you can successfully do step 1, then you can go to step 2. You must pass each hurdle.” Whether a novice or an expert, with Bikram Yoga, the advantages go on and on. “It works your entire body,” says Levine, adding that “it is designed to find weaknesses and kinks and errors.” Created over 45 years ago, Bikram Yoga is Sam demonstrating the awkward pose. the original “hot yoga.” The heat warms the body, which increases blood flow and circulation. The exercise, which is both therapeutic and challenging, is great for the whole body, especially the organs and circulatory system. Each 90-minute class encourages the body to stay fluid and relaxed. Says Levine, “It is so effective and anyone can do it. People feel better very quickly.”

USIC. IT’S ALL AROUND US AS WE START THE FALL SEASON - FOOTBALL games, NASCAR races, baseball games. Whether it’s the National Anthem, half-time shows, or team fight songs, all of us either sing, clap our hands, tap our feet, dance to the beat, or listen quietly. Music helps form our attitudes and moods. If the National Anthem, is playing our mood is more of a serious nature. If the fight song is playing, our attitude is more playful and excited. There is no substitute for music as it relates to personal growth and development. With this in mind, why don’t more children learn music in the school setting? And if they join the band in elementary or middle school, why do so many drop their study of music within the first two years? Why don’t adults join a choir or a band? Are we aware of the positive benefits of learning music? There is far more to playing in a band than purchasing an instrument, taking private lessons, adding music class to the school schedule, and rehearsing for a concert. It gives us a roadmap for success; success in all avenues of life. The learned skills needed to excel in music are transferable to every academic subject and every phase of life. The character values we seek in leadership roles, are taught in band. Music shapes the lives of our “leaders of tomorrow” through the ethical habits they establish each day in rehearsal. Learning music embraces all forms of cognitive learning. It teaches us the value of teamwork and how to be an effective team player, nourishes the love of learning, encourages cultural awareness, promotes cooperative flexibility, develops self-discipline, extends understanding, and helps us form friendships that last a lifetime. There is amazing satisfaction in coming together as a team for a common goal. With music, teamwork is very different from that of a sports team, where the goal is to defeat opponents in games. The teamwork in music is about individual and group self-improvement, competition, hard work, and friendships. When you are a member of a band, choir, or musical group, you share experiences with others that you may not have otherwise had the opportunity. You are frequently building new relationships. If your job moves you to another state, you can join another band or group, and start building new friendships. Music is a wonderful bridge between states. Music is a place for everyone … and is considered a universal language. It’s not too late. Visit your local music store, receive advice from an expert, and begin building relationships through music today! Musicians Discount Center in Miami help you find the instrument that suits you and your needs. They are the one stop music shop that has been sharing their expertise with others for many years. Aromatherapy for Dogs BY TAMI MAIER
W
LOVING PET CARE IN YOUR HOME OR MINE
HILE THE MANY BENEFITS OF AROMATHERAPY BOTH PHYSICALLY AND psychologically in humans has often been recognized, you may be surprised to learn that dogs respond incredibly well to essential oils as well. The essential oils used in aromatherapy are absorbed extremely quickly by the body and can reach the bloodstream within 20 seconds of being applied. However, unlike most drugs or medications, they do not build up in the system, so they will often need to be reapplied. Furthermore, it is important to remember that some of the essential oils used and enjoyed by humans might not have the same reaction in dogs. In fact, some oils can actually be harmful for them. In this article, I’d like to introduce you to some of the uses and value of lavender oil, in particular, for your dog.
Lavender oil is one of the most versatile oils in nature, which is why it is one of my favorite oils and a must have for dog owners. It works well as an insect repellant and to repel fleas, ticks and other biting insects. This is a great natural option for dog owners to use over chemical treatments, which can be dangerous and possibly toxic to your dog. By taking a few drops of Organic Lavender Essential Oil and mixing it with a carrier oil, such as fractionated coconut oil (it is necessary to always dilute the oil as it can be very strong when used alone) you then apply it between your dog’s shoulder blades to keep fleas and ticks away. You can also add a few drops of Lavender oil to your dog shampoo, to discourage biting insects and to enhance the shine and texture of your dog’s coat. Lavender’s fragrance is often used to create a relaxing and calming effect on the body and mind, which brings us to another great tip for dog owners: use it to help calm an anxious dog. Whether due to thunderstorms, car rides, fireworks, or a trip to the vet/ groomer, remember that a dog’s emotions including anxiety, separation anxiety, stress and fear are very real to dogs, and can be just as debilitating as they are to humans. Using therapeutic grade lavender oil is a great way to address these issues. At PAWSitive Pet Sitting, whenever we have a dog that is displaying stressed or anxious behavior, we quickly use a scent diffuser, allowing the fragrance of the lavender oil to fill the air, and within a short amount of time the calming effect it has on the dog is noticeable. If you do not have a diffuser, you can put a drop or two of the oil on your dog’s collar or place a few drops on your dog’s favorite blanket and put it in the dryer, allowing the oil to permeate the fabric and helping to calm your dog. These are only a few of the many uses of lavender essential oil. If you would like to learn more about the safe uses of this and other essential oils and aromatherapy for dogs, you can contact me at Tami@livepawsitively.com. Tami Maier, MS in Counseling Psychology, with current focus and certification on Aromatherapy for pets. A native of Miami, Florida, she is the owner and operator of PAWSitive Pet Sitting, a dog boarding, doggy daycare, dog walking and pet sitting business for 8 years. PE T C A RE
Howl-o-ween BY DR. MARIANNE CERDA
I
T’S THAT WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR WHERE THE AIR IS A LITTLE CRISPER (well, at least a little less humid in our case) and the smell of pumpkin spiced candles fill the air. Fall has arrived and with that comes the best holiday (I may be biased)… Howl-o-ween! Here are a few pet tips to help you prepare for the spookiest night of the year. 1. Tricks, NO Treats – As many of you already know, ingestion of chocolate and its by products (methylxanthines – theobromine, caffeine, sugars, fats) are toxic to our pets. The severity of clinical signs associated with chocolate toxicosis depends on the amount of chocolate ingested, the type of chocolate and individual sensitivity. The onset of clinical signs can occur up to 6-12 hours after ingestion and most often include: increased thirst, bloating, vomiting, diarrhea and restlessness. In severe cases, these signs can progress to increased urination, tremors, rigidity, unsteady walking, seizures, collapse and coma. Please assure that all Halloween candies this year are stored in appropriate containers away from your pet’s reach. Although prognosis with chocolate toxicosis is generally good, it is imperative that treatment be sought promptly. If you have witnessed your pet ingesting chocolate or exhibiting any of the above clinical signs, please contact your Veterinarian or local emergency clinic immediately for further assistance. 2. That’s a wrap! – We all know the best part of the candy is what’s inside the wrapper, but those pesky little wrappers can cause quite a nuisance if ingested. Wrappers are colorful, textured and often contain remnants of the candy they once held… the perfect little treat/toy for our beloved pets. However, if our little Shadow ingests enough of these shiny candy essences, they just might cause a bowel obstruction. Think along the lines of a giant hairball clogging your bathroom sink... not good. A bowel obstruction, or gastrointestinal foreign body, can sometimes be treated medically but often require costly surgical intervention. 3. Frankenweenie – In today’s society, pets are treated more like members of our family rather than pets themselves, so it’s no wonder we dress them up too! I’d be lying if I told you I wasn’t excited to see the creative costumes my clients come up with every year… they are impressive! I do advise, however, to only dress those pets whom like to be dressed up (there are those few!) as to avoid any undue stress. In addition, make certain that the costumes do not contain small pieces that can be easily chewed off and swallowed or loose, dangling pieces that can cause your pet to get tangled or caught. 4. Black Cats – It is indeed a myth that witches fly around on Halloween adopting black cats to carry out their spells, therefore there is no reason to believe that they are more at risk than any other pet. However it is true that animals all too often become victims of holiday pranks and cruelty. It is best to keep our pets indoors (with appropriate identification), away from the front door this Halloween to assure their safety. Please keep in mind these few tricks to keep your pets safe this Halloween. Do not hesitate to contact your Veterinarian or the ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 (a fee applies) should your pet ingest any potentially harmful products. I wish you a safe and very spooky Howl-o-ween! Dr. Marianne Cerda, is a Veterinarian at Galloway Veterinary Hospital in Pinecrest, FL. A native of Miami, Dr. Cerda’s interests include internal medicine and hospice care. As an advocate of preventative medicine, Dr. Cerda emphasizes the importance of client education both to better pet health and strengthen the owner-pet bond. #INFLUENCEATELIER
UP & COMING
A Positive InFluence BY MEGHAN AMATO
O
N SEPTEMBER 11TH, INFLUENCE ATELIER, AN up-and-coming fitness studio, held their grand opening in South Miami. It was a vibrant, social affair, and although not a single person appeared to be there for physical training, one couldn’t help but be struck by the energy flowing through the minimalist studio space. Many were in attendance, including local vendors such as Whisk Gourmet Food + Catering, Juicy Lu, and even a small-time DJ company, Grantrack, which provided a genuine addition to South Florida’s ever-growing hipster community. The idea behind it all? To raise the level of consciousness of gym-goers and health enthusiasts alike, according to InFluence owner, Faheem Mujahid. Of course, to call InFluence Atelier a “gym” would be an affront to its character. Designed as a training and lifestyle company, Faheem aims to “influence” members to tap into their full potential and propel them through their fitness goals via inspiration and encouragement, while challenging them to go above and beyond their own expectations. InFluence has expressed their mission as “breathing life” into possibilities of who people are and who they can become, an idea which appeals to locals from all walks of life, and breeds the positive reinforcement sometimes lacking in other fitness environments.

Even the studio’s layout distinctly characterizes the owner’s desire to instill a sense of community and promote closeness among InFluence patrons. Artistically industrial, yet simple, InFluence Atelier is contrary to any one of the overwhelming, harshly-lit gyms I’ve found myself in from time to time. Truly a taste of urban-Zen, it upholds its intrinsic values within and without the studio space. Faheem explained to me that he’s planning social networking events every month to speak about important issues relating to the community, and to create enthusiasm for the health and fitness lifestyle. His outreach efforts promise to establish a training facility far more versatile than the average gym. Training sessions are specifically tailored to meet the user’s needs. Each body is different and set out to accomplish its own unique goals; InFluence’s mission is to create awareness for each individual, and show them that everyone has been provided the tools they need to achieve what they wish to accomplish – if only they realize they are capable of going the distance. InFluence Atelier also offers nutritional consultations, furthering their idea that a healthy lifestyle goes above and beyond “working out,” but must flow through every fiber of a person in order for them to be the best imaginable version of themselves. All of their services are viewable on their website’s “menu,” of course. The company is visibly anything but traditional, which seemed to generate a lot of traffic during their grand opening. A positive atmosphere, where both new and familiar faces shone amidst the funky display of workout equipment, eccentric refreshments, and Faheem’s friends and family all donning “I am influence” T-shirts trademarked with a peace sign, heart, and InFluence’s own emblem, the ankh – a symbol for life. N A GLOBAL COMPETITIVE MARKET, WE ARE CONSTANTLY challenged to deliver measurable improvements, increase productivity, and do it now! But how exactly do you go about it? In the last decade, the answer was to throw technology at the problem - more laptops, smartphones, and a faster Internet connection would do the job. It worked to speed up the flow of information, but it left in its wake “skills amnesia.” Many have forgotten that essential management skills are still at the core of high performance, and that the development of these skills is the fastest and best way to increase both personal and team productivity, while keeping a healthy life/work balance. We have become enamored with self-imposed deadlines and the adrenaline rush they produce. Many believe that chasing the next deadline is what makes them important. The reality is that most of our frenetic busy-ness is a way to avoid thinking about and doing what is most important. There’s a difference between being busy and being productive. It may come as a surprise, but it has been found that as few as 10% of people are truly productive and move an organization’s agenda forward. Others may look busy, but they may just be spinning their wheels - answering every e-mail that hits their inbox, every voice mail they receive - their crowning glory is logging the most hours! High-performance people embody several elements (essential skill sets) for driving both personal and team productivity. Here are three of the most important: 1. Focus: the motivation to zero-in on purposeful goals, take accountability for them and see them through to completion, and to inspire others to share their objectives and concentrate on the key projects. Motivation and goal-setting are inextricably intertwined. Motivation inspires goal setting and goal setting clarifies and connects us to our values. Goal setting enables you to cope with shifting priorities and crisis management. 2. Communication: most of us spend a good deal of our days engaged in some form of communication. Indeed many people are communicating in one form or another for 80% of their time at work. While reading and writing remain the core essential communication tools, it is via the Internet that most communication takes place. It is vital that individuals and their organizations develop workable protocols for internet communication and voice mail. An e-mail charter is an essential tool in today’s workplace. 3. Energy: the vigor you need to thrive, not merely survive, in a competitive market will come from two sources. First, the intense personal commitment to achieve your goals, and second, leading a balanced life. Your use of time affects your body, your health, your stress levels and general happiness. We may live in a 24-hour society with instant communications, but you do not have a 24-hour body. Those people who can keep a healthy life/work balance know that stress is always subjective. Start developing the thinking that will help you stay calm, happy and prolong your life! Make stress reduction an integral part of your ethos. By developing essential management skills such as focus, personal organization, communication and life/ work balance, you will learn how to stay in control and increase personal performance. LEG A LLY SPE A KING
Business Owners, Consider Before the Holidays: Have You Really Limited Your Liability? BY BRETT TREMBLY, BUSINESS AND LITIGATION ATTORNEY
A
S BUSINESS OWNERS IN SOUTHEAST FLORIDA, WE ALL have a million things to do. Unfortunately, sometimes we are so focused on the services we provide that we neglect our business infrastructure. In most cases, for example, you register your business as an LLC, start operating, and figure you no longer need to worry about exposure to personal liability for business debts, right? Unfortunately, it is not that simple. In some instances, the “alter ego” legal doctrine may put individual responsibility on an owner, officer or corporate official. The basic premise is that the business entity is not really separate from the individual, and is thus merely an alter ego of the owner. If proven, your investment property, vehicles, or other personal assets could be at risk. So, what do you need to do in order to ensure that your liability protection is adequate? The specifics depend on your unique circumstances, and I would be glad to discuss them with you. In the meantime, below are four important general rules to keep in mind: »» Maintain separate personal and business bank accounts, even if you have no other employees. Commingling of funds is a significant factor considered by the courts. Similarly, maintain separate bookkeeping records. »» If you loan personal funds to your LLC, do so as a loan or capital contribution
and document the movement of funds properly. »» Never loan money to yourself from your business, and make sure all business assets are properly titled to the business. »» Don’t confuse your business name and personal name when executing contracts. Always list the LLC as the party on the contract, and sign in your official capacity for your business. Also, when possible, do not sign a personal guarantee. Many business owners are surprised to learn that registering their business as an LLC is not enough, by itself, to protect their personal liability from business debts. Hopefully you did not learn this lesson the hard way. Take a few moments to consider whether you have operated your LLC completely separate from your personal life. If the answer is no, it is important that you take immediate action to protect yourself. If you have skipped this important step, find a business lawyer to review your operating or shareholders agreement, corporate structure, and your contracts. Now is the perfect time to get your house in order, so that you can enjoy a stress-free holiday season, legally speaking. Brett Trembly is a Business and Litigation Attorney located in Pinecrest. Passionate about protecting business owners from getting in a legal bind, Brett helps business owners and entrepreneurs with their legal business needs. With pieces that are often gathered from Palm Beach Estates to Pinecrest Mansions, items from top consignment shops should have one common thread: all the items should be in excellent condition. Avoid the run of the mill consignment stores with dusty, old pieces and opt for stores featuring beautiful, gently used pieces. In return, you’ll receive furniture from the finest companies available for a fraction of their original cost. Furniture is not the only thing to look for in a consignment shop. Search out accent pieces and accessories, including artwork. Sometimes you can get lucky and stumble upon original artwork by famous artists. Other items might include different types of standing art such as bronzes, mirrors, vases and glass pieces to add that special something to your home. Keep in mind that consignment shopping isn’t always a quick endeavor. To truly get the biggest bang for your buck, you’ll want to peruse shops often, taking in all of the different collections. Since new items are constantly coming in, patience is a virtue. When in the market for a new piece, try visiting your favorite consignment shop at least

once a week to take advantage of the constant flow. If you see something you love, though, jump on it, since the great deals don’t often last. Once a one-of-a-kind piece is sold, you can’t order another one. If shopping weekly is too daunting, try finding consignment shops that post their products online. This allows you to browse even more often, without leaving your home. Then, if you find a piece you’re interested in, you can go into the store to check it out in person. Whatever your taste, consignment shopping offers something for everyone. When you find that perfect piece, you’ll leave with the satisfaction of knowing you received high value at discount prices. Keep in mind that consignment isn’t just for buyers. It’s also handy for people looking to get rid of furniture. Whether you are looking to remodel, make space, or you’re just tired of a piece of furniture, consider bringing your goods to a consignment shop. Most stores will put your piece on display for a designated amount of time. If your item sells, you receive a percentage of the sale. If your item doesn’t sell, you can take it back or it can be donated. Upscale Furniture Consignment Gallery is located at 8845 SW 132nd. St., Miami, FL 33176 (in the Famous Warehouse District by The Falls). You can reach Upscale Furniture at 305.491.5651. Safety Tips for a Happy Halloween BY FRANK ISTUETA, OWNER, ISTUETA ROOFING
E
VERYONE WANTS TO HAVE A SAFE AND HAPPY Halloween for themselves, their guests and especially their children. The excitement of children and adults at this time of year can sometimes make them not as careful as they would normally be. Most children already know things that they can do to be safe, but parents can get so caught up in the fun themselves that they might forget some simple safety ideas that could keep everyone out of trouble. Having a fun and safe Halloween will make it all worthwhile! If you take your kids to a sponsored event, like a safe Halloween thrown by your church or community center, make sure to keep an eye on them at all times. Even though it seems less dangerous, you are still in a strange environment full of people you don’t know. All it takes is a minute with your back turned to find your child gone. Below are more common sense tips to keep your children safe.
»» Make sure that your child has a pre-programmed cell phone with him/her if they go out on Halloween night! Make sure that all important numbers are programmed and ready for use. »» Know the route your kids will be taking if you aren’t going with them. Make sure that they know not to
deviate from the planned route so that you always know where they will be. »» Trick or treating isn’t what it used to be. In most cities it’s not safe to let kids walk the streets by themselves. Your best bet is to make sure that an adult is going with them. If you can’t take them yourself, see if another parent or two can. »» Help your child pick out or make a costume that will be safe. Make sure that it fits them comfortably. If they are wearing a mask of any kind, make sure that the eyeholes are large enough for good peripheral vision. »» Make sure you set a time that your kids should be home and that they know how important it is for them to be home on time or to call immediately if they are going to be delayed. »» Serve your children a filling meal before trick or treating and they won’t be as tempted to eat any candy before they bring it home for you to check. »» Make sure that if your child is carrying a prop, such as a scythe, butcher knife or a pitchfork, that the tips are smooth and flexible enough to not cause injury if fallen on. Make sure that costumes are the correct size and won’t get in the way when they are walking, which could cause them to trip. »» Be sure to show your children how to cross a street

T
HERE IS SOMETHING TO BE said for simplicity, and here in the Ozarks it reigns supreme. Whether you are spending a couple of hours quietly canoeing or feeling the thrill of zip lining, the Buffalo River Valley has it all. My first couple of nights were as spent in a cabin at the Buffalo Outdoor Center. I listened to the sounds of the night from my window in the loft as sleep overtook me. My days there were filled with leisurely canoe trips just floating down the Buffalo River. My foot dangling in the cool water and the sculpted river bluffs looming above me, I felt like a character out of a Mark Twain novel. If you’re a real morning person, you can drive to see elk in the meadows. I, however, decided to sleep in and enjoy the crisp air, while drinking coffee on the porch, and then headed out to the Tree Canopy Tour. This is the “premier wilderness zip line experience in the state” and I was not going to miss this opportunity. Oh, did I mention I had never done this before, and scared does not even come close to how I was feeling? Standing on that first platform I felt sheer terror. I’m sure it was only a few minutes before I finally gave in and stepped off, but it felt like an eternity. What a feeling! As I zipped through the trees I couldn’t believe I had waited this long to experience such a freeing feeling. If zip lining is not your thing, you can still explore the outdoors by hiking the Whitaker Point Trail/Hawksbill Crag, or taking a scenic drive over to DeVito’s Italian Restaurant where you can fish your own trout and cook it up. Breakfast at Gilbert’s Café in the very small town of Gilbert was delightful. As I walked down the street to the country store, a dog ran up behind me and enticed me to play with him as fall leaves drifted down from nearby trees. After a hearty Ozark breakfast, I headed for a 2-hour horseback ride on some of the most alluring trails I have seen, through creeks, valleys and hillsides. My next adventure took me to the White River/Bull Shoals Lake area. Gaston’s White River Resort would mark my final destination in this beautiful region. The resort began 50 years ago and now encompasses 400 acres with 2 miles of river frontage, 79 cottages, an airstrip, 70 boats, nature trails, restaurant, swimming pool and duck pond. It was here that I took a fly fishing class and kayaked Bull Shoals Lake. Now, here is something you don’t hear everyday, “I ate award winning pizza.” Nimas Pizza was where I was lucky enough to have lunch. They were the International Pizza Challenger Winner in Las Vegas several years REEL RECOVERY IS A NATIONAL running, and I can see why, as his pizzas are NON PROFIT ORGANIZATION THAT delicious and his various designs are very clever. WAS INSPIRED BY A GROUP OF AVID My final night there I spent on a houseboat FLY FISHERMEN WHOSE FRIEND WAS complete with slide, drinks and a catered BATTLING BRAIN CANCER. THEY dinner by the 178 Club Restaurant. The wine OFFER FREE FLY-FISHING RETREATS FOR MEN RECOVERING FROM ALL selection was from Raimondo Winery that FORMS OF CANCER. specializes in Italian wines, fabulous extra virgin olive oils and balsamic vinegars. Renting a houseboat and cruising a lake was something I had never considered until now; I immediately added it to my bucket list. Worthy of mention is that the Ozarks is a beautiful place to ride a motorcycle, and so it was that shortly after disembarking the boat, I jumped on the back of a gleaming Harley and made my way through the mist and grazing deer back to the river at Gaston’s for one last glimpse of the Arkansas sky. THE WOMEN’S FUND LOOK WHO’S IN THE BARN?
Palmer Trinity School is proud of the active involvement of its students with The Women’s Fund of Miami-Dade and its Junior Board. The Women’s Fund of Miami-Dade’s mission is to improve the lives of women and girls through grant making, research, advocacy and education.
Photo: Mr. Heetderks, WCS elementary school science educator and Discovery Barn director, introduces preschool students to does Daphne and Fantasia.
The Junior Board is comprised of 21 members from various local high schools and was launched in 2014 as an initiative to engage a younger generation of women in the issues facing the community. Palmer Trinity students have participated by volunteering their time and efforts in tackling weighty issues and finding innovative ways to stop such things as child sex trafficking. Through informational seminars and presentations, students learn about the topic and then brainstorm ideas on how to prevent it.
Westminster Christian School (WCS) in Palmetto Bay welcomed two does, Daphne and Fantasia, to the elementary school’s Discovery Barn Program. The Discovery Barn immerses students in hands-on/minds-on experiences where science, nature, and literacy are integrated around a farm theme.
