Happy Thanksgiving

N

OVEMBER IS HERE, AND IT’S HARD TO BELIEVE WE’RE IN THE FINAL STRETCH of another calendar year. The holiday season is officially upon us, and we are looking forward to a wonderful Thanksgiving spent with those we love. This time of year gives us the perfect opportunity to take stock of all there is to be thankful for. At the top of the list, of course, is good health and great family and friends. And let’s not forget this amazing community we live in, with its beautiful weather and abundance of fun events for everyone to enjoy. Some of the upcoming events you can read about in this month’s magazine are The D.A.R.E. Arts & Crafts Fair (page 16), The 6th Annual Shop to Stop MS (page 18), Pinecrest & Palmetto Elementary School’s Film/Fun Fest (page 20), and The 43rd Annual Chamber South South Miami Art Festival (page 51). Besides giving thanks, the holiday season is also a great time to give back. Whether it’s your time or money, no donation is ever too small. You can read an excellent article about giving back to our community (page 46), by one of our contributing writers, Luis Ortega. We love the amazing feedback you continue to share with us via phone calls and emails, so please keep it coming! Please connect with us via social media as well. You can find us on Twitter (@FloridaVillager), Facebook (The Florida Villager), Instagram (@thefloridavillager), and Google+ (The Florida Villager). Sincerely,

Coral Gables Embraces Green Space, One Parking Space At A Time BY BROOKE BLOOM LAM

T

AKING PLACE ON THE THIRD Friday in September, PARK(ing) Day is an annual open-source global event where citizens, artists and activists collaborate to transform metered parking spaces into temporary public places. The project originated in San Francisco in 2005 when Rebar, a local art and design studio, converted a single metered parking space into a temporary public park. It has since evolved into a global movement. During this year’s event, on September 19, Downtown Coral Gables joined in by transforming metered parking spaces by Hillstone Restaurant on Miracle Mile. The area was converted into a public park and social space where visitors were encouraged to congregate. Coral Gables created “a nice little oasis to sit and read and enjoy the green space,” said Coral Gables Public Affairs Manager Maria Higgins-Fallon. The pop-up park was outfitted with plants, tables and chairs, and offered some welcomed green space. “A lot of people took advantage of the space to read and have lunch,” Higgins-Fallon added.

On PARK(ing) Day, people around the globe temporarily reclaimed parking spaces to enjoy the urban landscape. The project challenges people to rethink the way streets are used and reinforces the need for broad-based changes to urban infrastructure. “When you add green space to any urban area, it’s always a positive,” Higgins-Fallons noted. In addition to the parking spaces by Hillstone, Coral Gables Museum participated as well. “In conjunction with PARK(ing) Day, we thought it would be a great idea to announce that the Museum Plaza, which was covered with beautiful green turf for our World Cup exhibit this summer, has been transformed into a public park space”, said Museum Director, Christine Rupp. “There are but a few green spaces in downtown Coral Gables, and we want the public to embrace the Plaza as a place to utilize for recreation, for a brown bag lunch or for simple relaxation,” Rupp added. Last year, from January through March, the Plaza was the site of the weekly Lunchtime Jazz in the Gables, always welcoming a great crowd. With the unveiling of the transformed Plaza, the Museum intends to create the same atmosphere all year long. “We would like to see the Plaza ‘park’ activated every day,” Rupp said. For more information on (Park)ing Day visit www.parkingday.org. The Coral Gables Museum is opened Tuesday through Sunday and is located at 285 Aragon Avenue, Coral Gables, FL 33134.

The City Beautiful is honored as a finalist in America in Bloom’s National Photo Contest BY BROOKE BLOOM LAM

C

ORAL GABLES RESIDENTS HAVE LONG KNOWN their City is one of the most beautiful in the nation. Wanting the rest of the Country to share in this beauty, Coral Gables entered the Nationwide “America in Bloom Photo Contest” this summer. In America in Bloom’s regular National Awards Program, judges travel to cities for an in-depth, on-site evaluation based on evidence of municipal efforts, business and community group efforts, and residential efforts, with part of each score relating to community involvement across these three constituent groups. For the first year, however, America in Bloom, with cooperating sponsorship from Home & Garden Showplace and Monrovia Nursery, announced an exciting new endeavor to encourage and recognize beautification efforts through a new annual photography contest. Cities and towns across the United States were evaluated on their overall beauty as demonstrated by a submitted portfolio of up to 18 photos. Participants were encouraged to submit photography exemplifying Floral Displays, Landscaped Areas, Urban Forestry, Environmental Efforts, Heritage Preservation, and Overall Impression. “We take a lot of pride in the beauty of our City,” said Coral Gables Marketing Manager, Economic Sustainability Department for Michelle Cash, “so, we had a lot of photography to choose from.” After narrowing down the large group of images, Coral Gables submitted 17 photographs of different environments/subjects

and places within the City that it felt best reflected the suggested photo categories. The City Beautiful lived up to its name when it was chosen as one of four finalists in the competition. Thirty cities had entered the competition and Coral Gables was the only Finalist from Florida. “We are privileged to be selected as a finalist,” Cash said. “It is a huge honor for a City of our size,” she added. Cities were divided into three population groups of small, medium, and large designations. Coral Gables entered in the Small City Population Group of under 50,000. Announcement of the winning cities, as portrayed by the submitted portfolios, was made at the America in Bloom Annual Symposium and Awards Program, which was held in Philadelphia on October 2 – 4. Although the small population category was won by Lewisburg, West Virginia, “we remain honored to have been a finalist among great cities from across the nation,” Cash noted. America in Bloom envisions communities across the country as welcoming and vibrant places to live, work, and play benefitting from colorful plants and trees; enjoying clean environments; celebrating heritage; and planting pride through volunteerism. It promotes nationwide beautification through education and community involvement by encouraging the use of flowers, plants, trees, and other environmental and lifestyle enhancements. America in Bloom is an independent, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. For more information visit www.americainbloom.org

H

ave you ever searched for the “perfect” ice cream? Well, look no further. Sub Zero, which was featured on TV’s Shark Tank twice, has opened its first store in Kendall at SW 107th Avenue next to Publix. Sub Zero creates “fresh” ice cream from scratch right in front of your eyes in a plume of nitrogen vapor and lights (the kids absolutely love the color light show) in about 15 seconds. There is no ice in the ice cream because it is made so fast. It’s the creamiest ice cream on the planet and perhaps the universe. Have a diet problem with ice cream? No more, their bases include premium, custard, low fat, no fat yogurt, no sugar added, lactose free and vegan/vegetarian almond milk so ice cream for every one. They also have the freshest and best tasting smoothies and milk shakes anywhere. And did we mention fresh homemade waffles. There are almost 40 flavors to chose from and about the same amount of mixins from fruits to nuts and candy. Unlike any other ice cream store, you choose every single item that goes into your creamy treat and they create it before your eyes with anything you want in it. They have stores all over the country and the world and are expanding rapidly, and Will Stuart, the franchise owner and area developer for Sub Zero Florida, along with his partner Ray Klein always are seeking entrepreneurs who would like to become a franchisee. Since “all” ice cream is made to order, it takes a little over two minutes to complete your order. But try to come early as the lines are sometimes long but well

worth the wait. They also have a loyalty program so the more you spend, the more you get in free addons and ice cream based on your point total, which is logged into their computer so no plastic cards are necessary. Prices are very reasonable — from $3.95 to $5.95, plus any add ins you might want but the first two flavors are free. They also make pies to go, sorbet, cakes and fresh brownies are coming soon. Believe it or not, there are actually 239,000 combinations you can choose from, but there also is a special menu board with sensations (12 of them) which are customers favorites so you just have to pick the number and it’s made instantly for you. There is nothing anywhere like Sub Zero Ice Cream and Yogurt. Once you try their product, you will not want to go anywhere else. They are located at 9065 SW 107th Ave., between Publix and Chicken Kitchen and are open SundayThursday, noon-10 p.m., and Fridays and Saturdays from noon until 11 p.m. Sub Zero has special catering where they come to you at schools, parties, weddings, social events, fairs and more. They also have fundraising events for your school or church or any other venue so drive on by and find out why this delicious new concept is sweeping the nation and the world. D.A.R.E. Arts & Crafts Fair Raising Funds for Schools BY BROOKE BLOOM LAM

A

FTER COUNTY SET-BACKS CAUSED THE REMOVAL OF THE D.A.R.E. (DRUG Abuse Resistance Education) Program from local elementary schools, Palmetto Bay Community Outreach Officer Patience Glasko went through training to become D.A.R.E. certified. D.A.R.E. is a police officer-led series of classroom lessons that teaches children from kindergarten through 12th grade how to resist peer pressure and live productive drug and violence-free lives. After receiving her certification, Officer Glasko worked to bring the program back to local elementary schools including Coral Reef, Perrine, Howard Drive, and Alexander Montessori. Certification was the first step to bringing the program back, but funding was also

necessary, not only for implementing the program at schools, but for supplies, workbooks and diplomas. Although the program received some funds from Palmetto Bay allocated for community oriented programming in the schools, Officer Glasko and the Community Outreach Team needed another source of funding. The D.A.R.E. Arts and Crafts Fair was the answer to this problem. Now in its 5th year, the D.A.R.E. Arts & Crafts Fair will take place on November 15. The event is expected to raise more than $3,000 in additional dollars to purchase the much-needed instructional aids. The Fair mixes family-fun activities with more than 80 vendor booths selling everything from unique jewelry, ceramics, photography and artwork to soaps, plants, clothing, food, and cool drinks. The festival also includes a Home Depot Kids Zone, a bounce house, face painting, student performances, and the possible appearance of last year’s popular antique car show. The Fair will take place on the East side of Coral Reef Park in the grass around the pavilion from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is no entrance fee. “Each year, hundreds of school children around the Village of Palmetto Bay benefit from D.A.R.E.,” said Officer Glasko. “The highly acclaimed program gives kids the skills they need to avoid involvement in drugs, gangs, and violence.” DARE was founded in 1983 in Los Angeles and has proven so successful that it is now being implemented in 75 percent of our nation’s school districts and in more than 43 countries around the world. The program is coordinated by the Community Outreach team with the Village of Palmetto Bay Policing Unit. For more information visit www. palmettobay-fl.gov. 6th Annual “Shop to Stop” MS at Saks Dadeland Benefits UM MS Center of Excellence BY BROOKE BLOOM LAM

O

N NOVEMBER 19TH, THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI Multiple Sclerosis Center of Excellence will host its 6th annual Shop to Stop MS from 6 pm to 9 pm at Saks Fifth Avenue, Dadeland. What could be better than a night of shopping, food, and an open bar? Raising money for a wonderful cause while enjoying all of these things. Guests of this charitably chic event will sip cocktails, dine on delicious tastings from local restaurants, and enjoy live music from the UM Frost School of Music. Aroma Espresso, Brio Tuscan Grille, Earl’s Kitchen + Bar, Fare to Remember, Misha’s Cupcakes, Nothing Bundt Cakes, Ohh My Sweetness, RA Sushi and Town Kitchen & Bar, are all slated to delight shoppers this year. Participants, armed with a special wristband, can shop the Saks store and know that 10% of all purchases will be donated to benefit the UM MS Center. With the help of Gulliver Prep Cheerleader volunteers, event partner Peace, Love, World, will also have products for sale which are specially designed for the event. Exclusive MS merchandise including shirts, cosmetic bags, cell phone cases, and tote bags will all be available for purchase with 100% of the proceeds going to the cause. The evening aims to raise money for research and awareness of MS, a chronic, sometimes debilitating autoimmune disease of the central nervous system, the brain, spinal cord, and the optic nerves that effects 400,000 people in the United States. A labor of love, “this event is near and dear to my heart,” explained Nicki Friedland, who created the event with co-chair and friend Jamie Rubenstein. Friedland, who was diagnosed with MS seven years ago, said she is “so blessed to be able to raise awareness and money for the University of Miami MS Center,” adding “I am grateful to the doctors at UM for the amazing healthcare that I have received.” What originally began as a small event with about 100 people has grown into a significant fundraiser. Last year alone, the event welcomed 300 guests and raised $50,000. With the help of sponsorships over the years, the Stop to Shop events have raised $250,000 for MS research and patient care. As a thank you to sponsors, a special dinner, catered by Fare to Remember, is hosted the night before the event. This year’s sponsor dinner will take place at the Tesla Showroom. “It is hard to believe that this is the 6th Annual Shop to Stop MS Event,” said Susan Fox-Rosellini, UM’s Department of Neurology Executive Director of Development and Marketing. “We are most grateful to our wonderful partners Saks Fifth Avenue Dadeland, Peace Love World and Miami Magazine, and our wonderful chairs. This event increases awareness of MS and raises desperately needed funds for indigent patient care and research at UM MS Center of Excellence,” she added. “To all who attend and support the event we applaud you and thank you.” Tickets to the event are $60 if purchased in advance and include a $25 Saks Fifth Avenue gift card to be used at any time. Tickets at the door are $75. To purchase tickets, go to www.miami.edu/shoptostopms or call 305.243.1388. 18

Pinecrest and Palmetto Elementary Schools Invite the Community to Their Film/Fun Fests BY BROOKE BLOOM LAM

N

OVEMBER IS A BUSY MONTH FOR LOCAL elementary schools, Pinecrest and Palmetto, whose Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs) are busy with their fundraising efforts. Pinecrest’s Film Fest and Palmetto’s Fun Fest are gearing up to be exciting days of games, fun, entertainment, food, and most importantly, great days of fundraising for the various schools.

PINECREST’S FILM FEST

Pinecrest’s Film Fest kicks off with a school wide poster contest. Helping to increase excitement around the event, the posters help get the word out about the Film Fest. The homeroom with the most submissions wins a popsicle party. Co-chairs Elyssa Lewis and Erin Kobetz have worked to plan a wonderful event. “This is our largest fundraiser of the year,” said Lewis. “It brings out the entire school and the community.” On November 22, the Film Fest will delight guests with a dunk tank and 10-15 different rides, including the “Titanic” Slide, as well as bumper cars, a photo booth, swings and a bungee jump. Guests can win and collect tickets at the game booths, hosted by each classroom, and stop by the redemption booth for exciting prizes including gumball machines, skateboards, basketballs, among others. In addition to all the fun, food vendors, such as the Hard Rock Café, Power Pizza, and Giardinos Gourmet Salads, will be selling food. Hip Pops, a food truck which offers customizable variations of ice cream, yogurt pops, and more, will also attend. Food vendors donate a percentage of their profits back to the school. Crepemaker will go above and beyond by donating 100% of its profits back to Pinecrest. To help raise more funds, a silent auction will start online in mid-November and finish at the Film Fest. Visit the Pinecrest school website (http:// pinecrest.dadeschools.net) for a link to the auction. While attending the Film Fest, devices will be provided for further bidding. Big ticket auction items include a Ritz Carlton Key Biscayne vacation and a trip to a North Carolina mountain cabin. Many other local businesses donated items as well. All proceeds from the event help the PTA fulfill school wish lists, which totaled over $75,000 last year. Thanks to the generosity of parents and community sponsorships, the PTA hopes to fulfil all wish lists this year. “Our teachers receive a lot of materials and funding because of this event,” said Lewis. “This is how we keep Pinecrest, Pinecrest.”

fundraising event. On November 8, guests can enjoy everything from rides, to performances by the Chorus and Cheerleaders, to food vendors. Vendor booths will offer glitter tattoos and balloon animals, and students will enjoy trying to dunk their teachers who will be taking turns in the dunk tank. Games will also be offered and tended to by volunteers from local middle schools and high schools. This year’s Fun Fest will take on a “Sailing the Palmetto Seas” theme and will include special pirate themed rides and pirate surprises throughout the day. A silent auction will also help boost the fundraising, which will include projects created by each classroom and special outings and activities with various teachers. Gift certificates from local restaurants, tickets to Sea World, and a Laser Tag party are other items to be coveted. At the end of the day, a live auction will take over to auction off school privileges such as premiere reserved seating at the Performing Arts performances, VIP parking spaces, and more. “It’s fun to see everyone come out and bid on these,” says Hodur. Funds raised from the Fun Fest will support the Media Center, bullying prevention programs, classroom technology, and the school’s science initiative, among other things. “Our Fun Fest isn’t just the biggest fundraiser of the year at Palmetto Elementary,” said Mr. Eric Torres, Palmetto Elementary School Principal, “it’s also our biggest FUNraiser.” The Fun Fest also has an impact other than raising necessary funds for the school. “Our community really comes together and simply enjoys the day,” Torres added. “It’s the event our children talk about all year long.” Both events are open to the community. Tickets can be purchased individually or bands for unlimited rides or games will be available as well. Palmetto Elementary’s event will take place on November 11 from 11am – 4pm. Palmetto is located at 12401 S.W. 74th Avenue, 33156. Pinecrest Elementary’s event will take place on November 22 from 11am – 4pm. Pinecrest is located at 10250 S.W. 57 Avenue, 33156.

PALMETTO’S FUN FEST

Palmetto Elementary School’s PTA President, Janet Hodur and Fun Fest Chair Gina Montesano, have likewise been working to plan the school’s annual 20

N SEPTEMBER 24, PALMETTO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL OPENED ITS DOORS to hundreds of grandparents and other family members for its annual Generations Day. Guests gathered in the cafeteria, which was filled to overflowing, where they were treated to breakfast from the PTA, and entertained by the school’s awardwinning cheerleaders and jazz combo. Following the morning broadcast, which was carried live to the cafeteria, family members visited classrooms to meet teachers and participate with the students in projects and activities. Some such activities included creating family artwork together. In some classes, students and grandparents traced handprints or drew each other, while in others, they jointly created a family portrait. Another class activity consisted of conversations about what school life was like “then”, when the grandparents were students, versus “now”. “We try to stress the importance of transmitting identity from one generation to the next,” remarked Didi Weinberg, Generations Day Chair. “In our ever-busy and complicated lives, we have become challenged to provide the true meaning of family. Our children are fortunate to know that so many of another generation are proud and honored to share this day with them.” Family members came from near and far, taking the opportunity to soak up all that Palmetto Elementary has to offer. This year, the event was held during the Fall Book Fair, bringing together two of the school’s most treasured events. Lines for the registers wrapped around the media center as volunteers worked feverishly to ring up purchases. Despite the waits, the atmosphere was lively, with lots of laughter. Following the class visits and Book Fair shopping, many guests stayed to take their grandchildren and friends to Lunch Bunch. “This event may only last a morning, but the memories made in that short window will last a lifetime,” said Principal Eric Torres. “The children love to have their grandparents and other relatives visit their school, and the experience gives families a foundation to engage with their child about education going forward. The positive impact of this truly makes Generations Day one of the most important events we hold all year.”

AP: What every 8th grade parent needs to know BY BROOKE BLOOM LAM

W

ITH MULTIPLE OPTIONS, MANY PARENTS OF 8TH GRADERS FACE A TOUGH decision about where to send their child to high school. Decisions between traditional public schools, private schools, charters and magnets - all vying for students and tax dollars - can be overwhelming. With that in mind, many Miami area high schools use Advanced Placement programs to attract incoming students. It can be difficult for parents and students to analyze the mountain of information and marketing directed at them over the course of 8th grade. In response to the marketing avalanche surrounding high school selection and specialized programs, the Miami Palmetto Senior High School (MPSH) PTSA and the Palmetto Middle School (PMS) PTSA created an information seminar called “Advanced Placement: What every 8th grade parent needs to know.” The seminar will be held on November 13 at 7 PM in the Palmetto Middle School Auditorium. It will focus on five key areas of discussion: 1) What is Advanced Placement?; 2) Should my child take an AP course as a freshman?; 3) What are the keys to success?; 4) What are the benefits of AP classes?; and 5) What is the difference between Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate? MPSH Advanced Placement teacher Julianne Farkas and Dr. Allison Harley, Principal of MPSH, will be presenting the seminar along with Anna Hochkammer, President of the MPSH PTSA.

Miami’s secondary school market is unusual in that it offers Advanced Placement courses starting in 9th grade. Nationwide, only a small percentage of 9th graders are able to take Advanced Placement courses. Passing rates on AP exams vary greatly among high school programs, and course offerings can be very different at different high schools as well. It’s important that parents understand how to separate hype from reality. “Most parents never ask about the school’s passing rate on AP exams; they are simply attracted to the amount of AP classes the school offers,” notes Hochkammer “Some schools may pass 25% of their students, while another may have a passing rate closer to 70% on the very same exam, “ she explained. Hochkammer also pointed out that for freshmen, the quality of the program and the instructors can have an even greater impact on student performance. Mariel Wenger, the mother of a current high school freshman, recalled how informative last year’s 2013 Advanced Placement information session was for her. “It provided me with invaluable information about different programs and resources that the high schools offer, many of which I was unaware of until the presentation,” she said. “I left the meeting confident that Palmetto High School was the best option for my daughter.” Palmetto Middle School’s PTSA President Linda Dwyer is grateful to Miami Palmetto Senior High for presenting such valuable information. “We need to know our options” said Dwyer, the parent of an 8th grader. “MPSH and PMS are a family, and as such, family need to look out for each other.” The seminar is open to the public and will take place at Miami Palmetto Senior High, located at 7460 Sw 118th Street, Pinecrest, FL 33156 To Advertise in The Florida Villager, Please call 786-505-1817

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

At Palmetto, We Mean Business… Thank you, we are sincerely BY DYLAN SOLOMON

to each and every one of grateful T you who have helped make our year a huge success. May your blessings be bountiful.

HE CAMPUS OF MIAMI PALMETTO SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL can certainly be categorized as a diverse area within the Village of Pinecrest. A solid argument could be made that in fact, it is the most diverse area of Pinecrest. There are poets, mathematicians, history fanatics, and future Broadway sensations, even those with athletic prowess. But there’s one group that often is overlooked and ultimately forgotten among this diverse group of talented young individuals… the business gurus. It seems the entrepreneurial mindsets of these young and talented individuals often fall through the cracks in our community’s view. Yet, within the walls of Palmetto, it’s quite contrary to what it appears. The forgotten business students are loud and they’re proud of their skills. These are students of Palmetto’s Junior Achievement program. For those who don’t know, Junior Achievement is a nationally recognized program. Many extremely successful people got their first taste of the business world through this organization. The program is structured to offer students a real-life perspective of the business world. Led by Mylene Exposito, the students of this program learn through hands-on activities and truly get a first-rate experience. This experience is gained by running a small business known as Strictly Panther Business. According to Mrs. Exposito, Strictly Panther Business offers students the opportunity to “[Learn] to run a business from inception to liquidation, taking into account the community and population, and ultimately contributing a portion of our profit to a local charity.” As part of the program, all types of products are developed and sold by Strictly Panther Business and the Junior Achievement students under the brand of PantherStrong. Examples of some of the items that have been sold this year are glow in the dark wristbands, sunglasses, and hair ties all allowing the students to show their Palmetto Pride. At the beginning of the year, all of the students in the class are given the opportunity to buy stock in their company. Through their hard work and development in skills from across the business world, such as marketing and finance, the students determine what the stock price will be at liquidation and how much money they will be rewarded with, which they give back to charity. In addition to the hands-on experience of the class, local business owner Valerie Silver (who is the JA community sponsor) comes into the classroom once a week and provides tips and guides the students with her expertise. With her help, the SPBers learn the ins-and-outs of the often very confusing and intimidating business world. Miami Palmetto Senior High School is the perfect place for aspiring business majors to get their start. Just ask the founder of Amazon…

Happy Thanksgiving!

FE ATURE : THE ROIG AC A DEM Y

Preparing and Empowering Students to Succeed BY BROOKE BLOOM LAM

T

HE ROIG ACADEMY IS A LOCAL PRIVATE school servicing grades PK2 through 8th grade. Founder and Head of School Jennifer Roig provides detailed information to invite readers to take a closer look at her “small school doing big things.”

HOW DID ROIG ACADEMY BEGIN? WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND?

I founded my school because I saw an unfilled need in the community and an opportunity to bring a vision to fruition. For years I witnessed children exhausted by after school tutoring multiple days a week, so I envisioned a program that would incorporate the same strategies I was using to tutor in a full day program. By doing this, I was ensuring that students could maximize from our learning methodologies during the day and be free to engage in extra-curricular activities. The goal was for

my students to feel accomplished, empowered, enjoy their childhood and thrive as individuals. My background in education is quite extensive. I hold an M.S. in Emotional Behavior Disorders and Learning Disabilities from the University of Miami, as well as a B.S. in Education with a concentration in Special Education from Nova Southeastern University. I have over 20 years of experience in the education field which includes teaching and tutoring children with isolated struggles and my years as a Placement Specialist with Miami-Dade County Public Schools. My continuing education studies and involvement include topics relating to Reading / Language disorders Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders, Executive Function issues and parent coaching.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STUDENT POPULATION?

Our student population is very diverse. It ranges from children that are intellectually superior to those that are academically on target but challenged with a learning difficulty, excluding autism, developmental delays or behavioral issues which all fall outside of our realm of specialization. By placing students in a smaller environment as opposed to a class of twenty

our students to once again, be successful in a larger learning environment. For over 13 years, The Roig Academy had provided exceptional education and differentiated instruction. Leading research-based concepts, teaching strategies and methodologies are infused into our curriculum thus making learning a positive experience once again.

WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT THE ROIG ACADEMY?

At The Roig Academy we’ve established our unique approach – Roig Approach We implement a variety of signature tools unique to our school and students. These tools integrate visual, verbal and interactive learning to ensure our students engage and progress according to their thought process and preferred learning styles. These tools are constantly evolving and fine tuned by our team according to the needs of our students. Our approach also consists of praising students to success rather than focusing on the negative. This way students are constantly motivated by positive reinforcement.

Having a child with a difficulty creates a knot in your stomach. After trying different programs, my daughter now looks forward to going to school and is less apprehensive towards schoolwork and learning. This is the first place that has made a difference for Angelina. -Agustin Duarte or more students, we are able to customize our teaching techniques and focus more on their individual academic needs.

The amount of recognition they receive is directly related to their effort and performance, but never emphasizes on what they are lacking.

WHAT DOES ROIG ACADEMY OFFER TO ITS STUDENTS?

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE OTHER SPECIAL PROGRAMS THAT ROIG ACADEMY OFFERS?

We provide young minds with a well rounded, exciting and enriching curriculum designed to thoroughly prepare them for the school years to follow. In our Pre-school, we offer a language and printrich environment where children acquire language and pre-literacy skills from the bottom up. Science, Social Studies, handwriting and pre-math skills are infused into our daily curriculum coupled with technology, hands on experiments with teacher direction, guidance and support. While recognizing that free unstructured play is a critical component of a child’s imagination, creativity and self discovery, structured time throughout their day helps to secure a sound foundation for a more demanding curriculum and environment for years to come. Our Day School, grades K-8, is a transitional program geared towards preparing our students whom may have found learning in a larger environment to be unsuccessful. Our goal is to prepare each one of 30

WHAT’S TO COME FROM THE ROIG ACADEMY?

Seminars are being formulated to educate parents so that they can play a more integral role of implementing our culture at home. Realizing that parents are an integral part of their child’s overall development, teaching them what works best for their child at school, and having it spill over into the home environment, is something I envision will come full circle for overall success. The Roig Academy is located at 8000 SW 112th Street in Pinecrest. For more information you can call 305.235.1313 or visit www.roigacademy.com.

MAYOR OF CORAL GABLES The Junior Orange Bowl International Youth Festival’s signature event, the Junior Orange Bowl Parade, is coming to the streets of Downtown Coral Gables on Sunday, November 30, starting at 5:30 p.m. I welcome all of you to join me for this 66-year old tradition created especially for all our children. With this year’s theme “Route 66,” the parade brings home a little nostalgia of the way we were, brought by the many colorful floats, school marching bands, and local organizations anticipated to take a trip down Miracle Mile for a dazzling spectacle of fun and community pride. Learn more about the JOB International Youth Festival and get involved. There are plenty of opportunities to volunteer or attend the many competitive athletic, academic, and cultural art events they organize all year long. Each year, more than 7,500 boys and girls, ages five to 18, enjoy and benefit from this great community endeavor. I’ll hope to see you at the Junior Orange Bowl Parade.

WHAT’S NE W IN RE A L ESTATE

Miami: A Powerhouse in the Real Estate World BY ELENA KEMPER, EWM REALTY

M

IAMI IN THE WINTER: Perhaps the closest thing to paradise in the continental United States. Warm rays, cool breezes, life couldn’t get any better. Whether it’s spending time outdoors perhaps grilling a gourmet meal, comfortably enjoying a leisurely day by the pool with family or friends, or just opening the windows to your home for some fresh air, the break from the heat is certainly welcome. But, there is more to this dynamic than just fun in the sun. There is a direct relationship between Miami’s gorgeous winter time weather and the Real Estate market. For locals, the cooler months are a great time to move, as it makes the job easier and more enjoyable. But, there are even more significant impacts to buying or selling in the winter, especially before the end of the year. First, taking advantage of current rates before 2015 changes in policy come into effect. Secondly, there are substantial tax breaks if the transaction closes before January 1st. These are just a few of the reasons the market heats up as it cools down outside. The effect of the wonderful weather reaches much farther than just our backyards. It’s the time of year when people from all over the world flock to our home to escape the cold, dipping their toes into the sand to enjoy a little taste of our paradise. From cruising the calm waters of Biscayne Bay to enjoying the natural beauty of Fairchild

Tropical Gardens, or perhaps a lunch at a street side cafe, the outdoor opportunities are endless. How does this impact us? Well, those beautiful beach front condos mostly empty throughout the year…not anymore. Either rented seasonally or occupied by the owner, you can expect to see more neighbors in the coming weeks and months. A bit more traffic as well as the roads are filled with license plates from far and wide. While in town, doors open up for investments in the market. Sales rise over the season as winter time visitors contemplate making Miami a second or third home, rather than just a vacation destination. For those who already own in Miami, now is a great time to explore the exciting new developments popping up all over the city, and to sell their current homes in favor of new ones. With record sales already on the board for Miami this year, the next few months will further cement the city as a powerhouse in the Real Estate world. Offering first class features and a taste of the good life, it’s no secret why Miami continues to grow in possibilities. This might just be the time you have been waiting for to take that next step before the heat slows you down. Elena Kemper is a realtor in Miami with 30 years of experience. Ranked in the top ½% of Realtors nationally, Elena specializes in providing exceptional service to clients, both selling and buying properties.

IT’S THEIR BUSINES S

Living Alfresco Assists Clients With Outdoor Design and Decor BY BROOKE BLOOM LAM

L

OOKING FOR A WAY TO MAKE YOUR OUTDOOR patio an extension of your living space? Living Alfresco offers high quality furniture and distinctive accessories specifically designed for your outdoor space. Not just a furniture store, Living Alfresco provides a personalized furnishing service for outdoor living areas. Owner Betsy Fantis specializes in transforming outdoor spaces into livable, comfortable extensions of the home to be enjoyed for many years to come. Whether you love entertaining, relaxing, or both, Fantis can find the look you want with fine outdoor furnishings specifically made Owner Betsy Fantis to withstand our unique South Florida environment. What began in 2005 as a small home business, Living Alfresco has evolved into a storefront open to the public and the trade. “I love the outdoors and furnishings,” said owner Fantis. “My whole idea was to make ‘outdoor rooms’, not just patios.” Whether it is furniture, lanterns, pillows, or rugs, Living Alfresco, conveniently located in South Miami, is your best outdoor resource. Why buy from a catalog or on the internet when you can receive the assistance, price and customer service you’re looking for right here locally?

As an outdoor decorator, Fantis has always assisted clients by going to their homes to see the space itself and get a feel for what her clients want to do. “I always determine if the purpose for the space is to be out in the sun, to dine, to relax, or all of these,” Fantis explained. In addition to determining a style, Fantis works hard to make sure her designs work with Florida’s weather. “Our environment is very wet and salty, with the sun beating down, so I am careful in selecting products to carry that will withstand our environment,” she said. Her purpose is to create “not only a beautiful place, but one that will withstand time as well.” After moving from a home studio, Living Alfresco opened a showroom in the warehouse district by Bird Road. They have since moved to a more visible location on Red Road, off of Sunset Drive. With its own convenient parking lot, Fantis is thrilled with her new location and the surrounding stores she has as neighbors. Upon entering the store, visitors can view a sampling of all of the lines carried by Living Alfresco. Clients are then invited to sit down and discuss their desires and budget. Fantis still offers her personalized service of going out to the homes of her clients to “take pictures, measure, and listen to what people want,” she said. “Then, we come back with a solution.” Although homeowners can use Living Alfresco’s services themselves, many designers frequent the showroom seeking Fantis’s help. Offering trade pricing, designers are welcome to work with Living Alfresco on behalf of their clients or along with them. Regardless of who the clients are, Living Alfresco supplies an A to Z turn-key service including planning, aiding in determining what fabrics, pieces, and rugs to add, delivery and installation. “We don’t just sell outdoor furniture,” Fantis said, “we create outdoor spaces.” Living Alfresco is located at 7291 Red Road, South Miami, FL 33143. For more information please call 305.668.5700 or visit www.living-alfresco.com.

INYL RECORDS. MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS. HOMESTEAD AIR FORCE BASE. Professional musician. Vinyl record awards. Excellent customer service. Music lessons. Are you wondering what this list represents? What these words have in common? The list represents the characteristics and service provided at Musicians Discount Center in South Florida. Did you know that this now full service, customer-focused music store started as a “small” vinyl record business – only selling vinyl records that were purchased at flea markets? The subconscious mind records every incident that has occurred in our lives from the moment we are born and throughout our entire life span. When children grow up in a dysfunctional environment, they are constantly receiving negative impressions in their minds, thus creating pathways for future behavior that is similar to that which they have experienced. For example, this is often seen in domestic violence where a child witnesses a parent being physically abusive and then grows up and repeats the pattern that was impressed upon him or her as a child. However, these events certainly do not make them a victim predestined to live out the same unhealthy patterns. As human beings, we are the masters of our own destiny. We can choose to take on the role of the passive victim and relinquish our personal power or we can take on an active role as co-creators of our lives. Through the decision to heal from the past, bury those negative impressions and create new healthier pathways, change is possible! Holistic psychotherapy will help you access, retrieve, and release the obstacles that are keeping you from living the life that you deserve. Through free will, consciousness, and a desire for change, we can eradicate the unhealthy patterns that are holding us back.

How is holistic psychotherapy different from traditional psychotherapy?

Holistic psychotherapy is a unique mind, body, spirit approach to therapy, that focuses on the person as a whole, rather than specifically looking at a certain challenge or situation that he or she may be facing. This highly effective type of therapy combines both Eastern and Western modalities to promote true healing from the root. Whether you are an adult, a child, adolescent or a couple seeking therapy, psychotherapy is designed to challenge negative belief systems and replace them with new empowering beliefs for a healthier happier life. This work is done through the “thinking mind” or “conscious mind,” where all decisions, judgments, and evaluations take place. We may want to look at it as the “active mind.” The most unique aspect of holistic psychotherapy is that we also work with the “subconscious mind,” where everything that has ever occurred in your life has been stored and recorded without editing, classifying, or judging any of those events. We may look at this part of your mind as “the passive mind.” Through kinesiology and other methods, valuable information is pulled from this portion of the mind and brought to the conscious mind so that true healing can begin to take place. Holistic therapy offers an extensive myriad of powerful tools that are groundbreaking and very often life changing. In addition to conducting what’s most commonly known as “talk therapies,” cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and psychoanalysis, integrative psychotherapy utilizes powerful tools such as mindfulness, kinesiology, emotional freedom techniques, breathwork, energy healing, positive psychology, and much more.

I have been trying to work through my situation alone. When is it time to make the call?

In general, people seek therapy in an effort to avoid emotional pain that has intensified to the degree that it is disrupting their everyday lives. If you are feeling overwhelmed and find it difficult to perform simple everyday activitie or if you have lost interest in socializing with the outside world and feel as though you are living in an isolated world of negative obsessive thoughts, it is usually time to make the call. We all have different thresholds, therefore it varies in different people. However, your “gut” instinct will never steer you wrong. If you have reached that emotional breaking point, don’t delay. “Emotional dis-ease similar to physical dis-ease gets worse with time.” Make that call today! What To Do With Your Dog When You Travel? BY TAMI MAIER

I

LOVING PET CARE IN YOUR HOME OR MINE

T’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN…THE TIME WHEN WE START TO PLAN HOLIDAY trips and make travel arrangements. Which leads us to the big question, “what should we do with the dog?” The two most common solutions are boarding the dog or hiring a pet sitter. Now some new pet owners may not know the difference between the two. Simply put, boarding is when you take your pet to a facility where it will stay throughout your trip, while a pet sitter is someone who you hire to come to your home to visit and care for your animal on a daily basis. In this article, we’re going to focus on the role of the pet sitter, what information you need to provide and what you should expect. As we mentioned earlier, a pet sitter is someone you have come into your home to look after your dog. During your first interview with prospective sitters, you should go over your pet’s needs and any and all instructions you have for their care. The potential sitter should then create and present you with a care plan of what they think will work best for your pet based on this information. Now, as the needs of pets can often change, it is essential that you meet prior to departing on your trip to make sure that the sitter feels 100% prepared to provide the best care for your pet, including details of any changes in your pet’s health or emotional well being. After each visit, your pet sitter should leave notes, so that upon your return you know exactly what happened with your pet on a daily basis. They should send you frequent pictures of your furry babies, so that at all times during your vacation you are assured that your pet is happy and well cared for. Advantages of hiring a pet sitter for your pet:

»» Pets are usually happier and show less stress when staying in their own home surrounded by familiar sights, smells and sounds. »» Diet and exercise routines are uninterrupted. »» Exposure to illness or parasites is minimized. »» Pets are given special attention and playtime with pet sitters, which most traditional kennels can’t provide. »» Pet sitters are also a great option when you have multiple types of pets that can’t always be boarded.

Advantages of hiring a pet sitter for the pet owner:

»» Knowing that your pet is in caring, loving hands. »» Having the confidence that the pet sitter can deal with other issues such as grooming or vet visits if needed. »» Not having to impose on family, friends or neighbors to care for your pet. »» Feeling that your home is secure with someone going in and out doing daily visits. »» Professional pet care provides added piece of mind by allowing you to know that they are responsible in the event of an emergency. Unfortunately, not all pet sitters are created equal, nor are they all professional and responsible. It is important when choosing a pet sitter to make sure you have done your homework. Be sure to get referrals and check on references so that you can travel with confidence that your pet will be happy, loved and well cared for while you are away. If you would like more information about pet sitting or pet boarding please contact me at Tami@livepawsitvely.com. Digital Technology for Pets BY DR. MARTA SANCHEZ EMDEN

D

O YOU WORRY ABOUT WHAT SCRUFFY IS DOING WHILE you’re at work? Well, worry no more. Digital technology for pets has invaded the pet consumer world making it possible for us to stay connected with our pets 24/7. Manufacturers of digital gadgets have taken notice of the strong bond between people and their pets and of the 55 billion dollars pet owners invest every year in their companions. If you’ve ever wondered how the world looks through the eyes of your pet, consider the GOPRO camera. This tiny waterproof camera can be fitted onto your dog’s collar or a special harness mounted on your dog’s back. YouTube is filled with all the creative ways pet owners have put their GOPRO to use. On the other hand, if your pet is the sedentary type and you wonder what they do during those long hours when you’re not home, the DROPCAM is for you. This tiny home security camera has an integrated microphone that will allow you not only to spy on Scruffy but also to speak to him, all through a smartphone application. If what you’re concerned about is your pet’s lack of exercise when you are not home, then seek the PET CUBE. This security home camera has, in addition to a microphone, a laser light to play with your dog. The laser can be manipulated through your smart phone app. Not impressed? Then consider inviting all your friends on Facebook to play with your dog and the laser light through THEIR smart phone App. In need for objective data? How about an activity monitor the size of an oreo cookie that can be placed on your dog’s collar? The VOYCE is a tiny gadget that will measure your pet’s daily activity as well as their respiratory and heart rate. It will even organize the data in handy tables and charts for you to analyze through an app on your smartphone. “Sounds great,” you might think, “but what I would really need is a GPS system so I can find my pet in case they run away.” Well, look no further, it’s already here. The WHISTLE ACTIVITY MONITOR with INTEGRATED GPS has the added advantage of helping locate your pet from an app on your smartphone. However, if your dog never goes far, you may only need your phone to notify you when Scruffy goes beyond that area established by you. In this case, consider the TAGG collar for your pet. These are only a few examples among many products available for animals; if you can imagine a digital pet gadget, it’s probably already under development. It is still to be seen the effects of this advanced technology on our pets. Closely monitoring your pet can give you a great feeling of doing an efficient and successful job raising your four legged buddy. The information obtained by activity monitors and cameras can be shared with your vet to aid in identifying causes of obesity and anxiety in your pet. However, there are some concerns for potential negative effects of this technology. Veterinary behavior specialists are worried that the long distance laser light game, for example, may facilitate development of a common obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in dogs known as “shadow chasing,” or that listening to your voice while not able to see you when alone in the house, may aggravate a separation anxiety disorder. Remember, before you invest good money on a digital gadget for your pet, consider it’s purpose and practicality. After all, a tennis ball for your dog or an aluminum foil ball for your cat will be much appreciated as well. Dr Marta Sanchez-Emden is the founder of the Animal Health and Rehab Center in South Miami. She has been practicing Veterinary Medicine in Miami for over 20 years. DINING OUT

Join the Family at King’s Creek Village Market and Tavern BY BROOKE BLOOM LAM

O

FFERING WALK-UP window service, a market, and a tavern restaurant, King’s Creek Village Market and Tavern is a one stop shop for meeting all your food needs. Starting at 6 a.m., commuters and earlyrisers can stop by the pick-up window of the Village Market for café con leche, pastelitos, or croquettas. Flat-iron sandwiches are also available throughout the day. Just an hour later, the Market opens its doors, enticing customers with groceries, power drinks and bars, an array of international and domestic wines, and even lotto tickets. The Market’s deli offers meals to go, beginning at 11:30 a.m. With a cozy wooden/rustic ambience, The Tavern, equipped with walls of sports memorabilia, is a sports bar with a Latin flare. It provides restaurant and bar options, although the quality of the menu far exceeds the expected “bar food.” Current owners Jay, a returned City of Miami firefighter, and Juanita Alvarez bought the restaurant in 2013 and together with Chef Freddy, cook up unique American fare with a Hispanic twist. Serving “tasty, yummy food,” Juanita boasts that their “wings are off the chain!” Others tend to agree as The Tavern has won the title of “Best Wings”

at the University of Miami’s Wingfest Competition. With frequent beer bucket specials, giveaways, and wine based margaritas, The Tavern has been nominated “Best Sports Bar” in Kendall by the New Times. Most menu items range from $8 to $20, and a kids menu is available. In addition to the food, The Tavern hosts a weekly Karaoke night, every Thursday, and local bands provide live entertainment on the weekends. Whether stopping by for a morning coffee, grabbing groceries, placing a catering order, settling in to catch the game and enjoy a great meal, or enjoying a night out at the bar, The Village Market and Tavern has the recipe for a good time. The Village Tavern and Bar is located at 8100 Southwest 81st Drive, 33143. The Coffee Window is open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. and the Market opens at 7 a.m. The Tavern is open from 11a.m. to 10 p.m. on Monday through Thursday and Sunday, and until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Follow The Tavern on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram for information on specials, featured sporting events, and the live entertainment line-up.

A

S ANOTHER HOLIDAY SEASON COMMENCES, THE USUAL reflecting takes place: How have I fared this year with respect to my goals? Where shall I spend the festivities? What will be my next New Year’s resolution? While this introspection may be healthy in this society of self-reliance, there’s often greater value, for self-preservation, in an outward examination of opportunities for the greater good. Even when these opportunities are available year-round, there’s no better time to review them than the season

of giving thanks. Altruism is defined as the practice of selfless concern for the well-being of others. Incidentally, a recent 2014 Gallup poll determined that “Americans who actively work to better their communities have higher overall well-being than those who do not.” The suggestion is that community involvement may help improve well-being, and may protect individuals from daily stress and worry. Beyond the renewed sense of purpose awakened by volunteering, fresh social relationships and more physical activity are also gained. Fortunately, in Miami-Dade County, opportunities abound to give back to our communities, and therefore improve our present health and future well being. Let’s review some of them: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Miami offers a big opportunity not only to impact a child’s life today, but also to inspire their potential for the future, while improving the community at the same time. If you’ve been thinking about getting involved, it is very easy, and your help is greatly needed. They organize community-based, school-based, and school-to-work programs. For a few hours, a couple times a month, you can give a child the invaluable gift of your friendship. Perhaps you were fortunate to have someone to talk to when you were a kid; realize, however, that every child today does not enjoy that privilege. Please consider applying to be a Big Brother or Sister at wementor.org. Safespace Foundation has provided safety and support to victims of domestic violence and their children since 1978. Beyond simple donations, you may want to participate in some of their volunteer opportunities, including working with children and youth. From the Wheels to Work, to the Empowering Women to Build Careers, to their Community Outreach Programs, you can help deliver career tools and life skills that increase participants’ self worth, build self-esteem, and improve their life management and employability. This is certainly good for the future. Do it. Get involved at safespacefoundation.org. Rotary Clubs locally and throughout the world are supported by a prestigious, international organization that is 1.2 million strong. For more than 100 years, Rotarians have worked avidly to advance powerful causes such as the eradication of Polio, the improvement of sustainable farming practices, professional development for educators, and improved literacy skills. In its most recent project for example, the Rotary Club of Miami Kendall (RCMK) supported underprivileged West Homestead Elementary School children with uniform polos, and donated new, fully equipped school bags to other primary learning institutions in the area. RCMK also sponsors a youth leadership development group at Felix Varela High School called Interact. Trust me, Rotarians routinely experience the intense catharsis alluded to by the Gallup poll. There are more than 40 Rotary Clubs in South Florida. For more information on how you too can transform the world through Rotary, please contact the author, or go to Rotary.org. Thanksgiving: Let’s not forget that it is not only about thanks, but also about giving. And while your “money” may always be useful, your time and attention can be just as helpful and appreciated. Jacob Bronowski said, “The world can only be grasped by action, not by contemplation. The hand is the cutting edge of man.” Let our hands be altruistic, fellow villagers; it’s easy. It makes sense. Let’s secure our future by giving back now. Luis Ortega joined Rotary in 2007 and was Co-Chair of an international Polio immunization deployment to India. His club meets for breakfast (and sometimes cocktails) on Wednesdays. He owns and operates a security consulting and outfitting firm in Palmetto Bay, FL. and can be reached at ceo@saiops.com

LEG A LLY SPE A KING

5 Tips for Avoiding a Contentious Family Court Battle BY VANESSA VASQUEZ DE LARA, FAMILY & PROBATE ATTORNEY

D

IVORCES AND PATERNITY cases are very difficult and emotional in the best of circumstances. Making decisions about emotional issues like parental responsibility and time sharing when emotions are already running high can also feel overwhelming. I’d like to offer 5 suggestions to help keep this difficult process from becoming contentious. No one benefits from an ugly custody battle – especially your kids! Remember that you and the other parent are both under a lot of stress. It’s hard to have any sympathy for your spouse or the other parent when you’re in the middle of a court case, but it’s useful to remember that they may be having difficulty coping too. If you try to have patience with both your own feelings and those of the other parent, it will make dealing with everything easier. Don’t hesitate to get help from friends, family, or counselors if you’re feeling overwhelmed, and give the other parent the benefit of the doubt where it seems warranted. Be willing to compromise where it seems reasonable and in the best interests of the children.

Think through the details. What kinds of arrangements will most benefit you and your children? It’s helpful if you have plans in place that are going to make it as easy as possible for both you and your children to move forward. This will probably involve plenty of time with both parents. Think through potential schedules and transportation arrangements. If you do not have a flexible employer, don’t demand a time sharing schedule that will be impossible to follow through on. Use mediation or alternative methods of resolution. Mediation services during divorce proceedings can be extremely helpful. They can be invaluable in assisting on establishing time sharing arrangements and in working out what kinds of agreements will be most beneficial for everyone. Mediation can also assist in narrowing the issues for court, even if not resolving the entire dispute. Other alternative methods for resolving cases can involve collaborative law, where the parties enter into binding agreements to collaborate with each other, and private judging, where a former family court judge can hear the case outside of the public eye. Stay calm. If everyone stays calm, it will be much easier to reach sensible decisions. Shouting matches can undo months of

progress; keeping things polite and friendly is the best way to move forward. If keeping calm is difficult in each other’s presence then allow the attorneys to assist in negotiations to ensure calmer heads will prevail. Don’t forget to pay attention to your kids. Sometimes you get so wrapped up in worrying about custody that you forget about the important thing: the kids. They need your attention, and it will be rejuvenating and relaxing for you to spend time with them. In the midst of all the stress of a court case, some fun time with the children will help you keep things in perspective. Family court cases can be extremely stressful, but always treat the other party as you want to be treated. If that doesn’t work, an experienced family law attorney can be your best ally. Vanessa Vasquez de Lara, Esq. is a Family and Probate attorney located in Downtown Dadeland. Dedicated to assisting families in their time of need, Vanessa helps parties with their divorce, wills, managing the affairs of a loved one after death, and after incapacitation. For more information about protecting your family, you can reach Vanessa and her staff through www.familylawprotection. com and at 305-596-9951.

A SK THE E XPERT

Is Your Home Ready for Holiday Guests? BY FRANK ISTUETA, OWNER, ISTUETA ROOFING

B

ELIEVE IT OR NOT, THANKSGIVING IS RIGHT around the corner, followed closely by Christmas and New Years Eve. It’s the time of year when many homes are preparing to host dinners and parties and even overnight guests. Whether you’re hosting for days at a time or for just one evening, you need to get your house in order, to accommodate your festive gatherings. To help get you started, we’ve compiled a list of simple and effective ideas to get your home refreshed, organized and ready for your guests. »» Have a welcoming entrance: Sweep off the porch, replace the worn out doormat, and hang a festive wreath on the front door. Send a welcoming message the minute your guests step out of the car. »» Clear your entryway: Put away unneeded objects that might get in the way, and make room in your front closet for coats, jackets, and sweaters. Keep things neat and tidy and uncluttered. »» Focus your efforts on guest bedrooms: When cleaning your house pay extra attention to your guest rooms. Clean bed linens, make space in closets and dressers, and clear nightstands so guests have a place to put their personal belongings. »» Give your guests the star treatment: To make

your guests feel extra special, leave them a small gift in their room, such as a simple box of their favorite chocolates or a basket of holiday goodies. It’s nice to leave a bottle of water and an alarm clock on their nightstand as well. Make sure there’s good lighting: Replace burned out light bulbs. Provide reading lamps in your guest bedrooms for those who want to read before turning in for the night. Make sure your exterior lights, especially your front porch lights, are working. Scour your bathrooms: Be sure your bathrooms are clean and ready for company. Replace worn bath and hand towels. Pile clean towels set on the counter along with a small basket with things like soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, razors, or other personal items they may have forgotten or need. Keep the temperatures comfortable: Guests should be comfortable, so keep an eye on the thermostat. Supply bedrooms with extra blankets and have a few throw blankets available. Invest in an air mattress: If you don’t have enough bed space, buy a nice quality air mattress and cushion it with comfortable linens and pillows. Stock your pantry and refrigerator: You want your guests to feel at home while they stay with

you, so stock up on their favorite foods, snacks, and drinks. Have a variety of healthy options too – like cut up veggies or fruit – since holiday eating tends to be rich and heavy. »» Don’t forget the holiday touches: A sprig of winterberries, a bough of garland, or a Cinnamon Broom makes any room cheerful and holiday ready. Warm up each area of your home with simple, uncluttered decor. Before your guests arrive, walk through your home and look at things from their point of view. Things don’t have to be perfect, but they should be clean, uncluttered, and comfortable. Happy Holidays! THE MINDFUL DI VORCÉE

Divorced Dad’s Bill of Rights BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ, DIVORCE COACH

S

PEAKING WITH SEVERAL DIVORCED DADS, I HEARD SOME common concerns and complaints. So guys, as promised, here is your Bill of Rights.

DIVORCED DAD’S BILL OF RIGHTS

Preamble: We, the divorced dads of America, having endured the trials and tribulations of our divorce, now stand united in our efforts to be upstanding fathers while stepping into our new lives as single men. Therefore, we ordain and establish the Divorced Dad’s Bill of Rights. Amendment I

We have the right to be who we are with our children. That means we might not do things our ex’s way but it doesn’t mean our way is wrong. No criticism needed. Amendment II

We have the right to the best possible relationship with our children. It is our mission to ensure this happens, therefore, no bad mouthing from their mom will be tolerated. Any deviation from this will be dealt with swiftly. Amendment III

We have the right to equal amounts of time with our children. Just because she gave birth to them doesn’t entitle her to more time. Our love is the same. Amendment IV

We have the right to open communication with our children. Cell phones were invented for a reason; allow our children to use them to call us whenever they want to. Amendment V

We have the right to a social life. We will cooperatively establish a schedule and adhere to it. Any attempts to control our time will be stopped immediately. Amendment VI

Stuff your wallet.

We have the right to expect understanding and flexibility when it relates to our work schedule. Some things are unavoidable, no need to take it personally when we are late. Amendment VII

We have the right to live peacefully and unharassed. We are no longer married so please call a handyman, neighbor or therapist. Amendment VIII

We have the right to date who we want without comments or quizzing from our ex. This is our personal life. Key word being “personal.” Amendment IX

We have the right not to be taken advantage of. Just because the MSA says we will pay for all school related items doesn’t mean you buy 10 uniforms and hit us with the bill. That is unacceptable. Here’s a tip: it’s called a washing machine. Nick Waddell Ins Agcy Inc Nick Waddell, President 11205 So. Dixie Hwy., STE 200 Pinecrest, FL 33156 Bus: 305-238-0500

Amendment X

We have the right to be guilt free. We will not live our lives feeling guilty over a failed marriage, a split family for our children or moving on to a new life. We will reconcile the old and accept the new. And when all else fails, we have the right to plead the fifth. How About a Re-set Cruise? BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ

W

ITH THE HOLIDAY SEASON UPON US, STRESS LEVELS RISE AND EXHAUStion sets in. So here is something to think about…a gift to yourself this season; a re-set cruise. A cruise where it is all about you. Where you can completely relax, hit the re-set button and step foot on land completely rejuvenated and ready to take on 2015. I boarded the Caribbean Princess with Princess Cruises on a Thursday, and docked back in Ft. Lauderdale on Monday morning feeling like a new person. It was a four day cruise with no ports of call, only relaxing days at sea, and one day at their out island, Princess Cay. Under gray skies, we pulled away from Terminal 2, drinking a Bahamas Bay Breeze and listening to the sounds of Pitbull. No one even noticed the approaching clouds as the crew had everyone up and dancing to the phenomenal band, Epithani. By the time everyone was doing the YMCA on deck, we had left the city’s skyline in the mist and were a floating oasis adrift on the sea. That first night I watched the sun set from my balcony, and then watched Godzilla under the stars, wrapped in a red plaid blanket. As crewmembers passed out popcorn, I settled back on my lounge chair and thought, “Life is good.” Each morning I was greeted by my cabin steward Pionono Bermedez’s, infectious smile, and during the entire cruise he made me feel like I was home. My mornings were filled with yoga, a spa treatment at the Lotus Spa and a healthy breakfast from the buffet. Afternoons were spent on the pool deck with a book in hand (one of many I brought), a nap and at least one activity. To be honest, there were so many interesting ones to choose from I felt like I missed out on some. I did a dance class, wine tasting, teatime with Jackie, where I learned about the jewelry Jackie O wore, and of course, listening to the band Epithani. Ok, I admit it, I was a 55 year old groupie; wherever they played, I was there. They kept me on the dance floor all night! Speaking of which, nighttime on the ship was whatever I wanted it to be. One night I did happy hour at the Wheelhouse, then sat on the deck and gazed at the stars. I did a Country Western Hoe Down and ate at one of their specialty restaurants, Sabatini’s. The great thing was that I could eat at any time I wanted, as casual or dressy as I wanted. One night, I opted for pizza on my own balcony listening, to the waves and enjoying the stillness and solitude of the night. Another night, I went to Karaoke after enjoying the amazing talent in the main show. Now for the crème de la crème, Princess Cay on Eleuthera. I have been to many out islands but this was by far the best. I could have built a hut and stayed. There was a band playing by the bar and pastel colored Adirondack chairs dotting the beach. Lounge chairs were strategically placed under coconut palms, and drinks were flowing. Grabbing a frozen drink, I made my way into the water and floated into Heaven. There were floats, paddleboards, water bikes, kayaks and banana boat rides to occupy the time, but I chose the Dune Buggy Heritage Adventure Tour. I had never driven a dune buggy so it was a check on my bucket list. We ended up at Lighthouse Beach where I spent 20 minutes swimming in beautiful, crystal turquoise water. Hut #2. Before I knew it, my time in paradise was up and I was on the tender back to the ship. Packing my bags the night before we docked back in the real world, I realized how much I had needed to re-set myself. This cruise was just what the doctor ordered. I shut my cabin door, walked up to the top deck and did what any self-respecting 55 year old would do…I danced the night away under the stars.
