Coral Gables Embraces Green Space, One Parking Space At A Time BY BROOKE BLOOM LAM

AKING PLACE ON THE THIRD Friday in September, PARK(ing) Day is an annual open-source global event where citizens, artists and activists collaborate to transform metered parking spaces into temporary public places. The project originated in San Francisco in 2005 when Rebar, a local art and design studio, converted a single metered parking space into a temporary public park. It has since evolved into a global movement. During this year’s event, on September 19, Downtown Coral Gables joined in by transforming metered parking spaces by Hillstone Restaurant on Miracle Mile. The area was converted into a public park and social space where visitors were encouraged to congregate. Coral Gables created “a nice little oasis to sit and read and enjoy the green space,” said Coral Gables Public Affairs Manager Maria Higgins-Fallon. The pop-up park was outfitted with plants, tables and chairs, and offered some welcomed green space. “A lot of people took advantage of the space to read and have lunch,” Higgins-Fallon added.

On PARK(ing) Day, people around the globe temporarily reclaimed parking spaces to enjoy the urban landscape. The project challenges people to rethink the way streets are used and reinforces the need for broad-based changes to urban infrastructure. “When you add green space to any urban area, it’s always a positive,” Higgins-Fallons noted. In addition to the parking spaces by Hillstone, Coral Gables Museum participated as well. “In conjunction with PARK(ing) Day, we thought it would be a great idea to announce that the Museum Plaza, which was covered with beautiful green turf for our World Cup exhibit this summer, has been transformed into a public park space”, said Museum Director, Christine Rupp. “There are but a few green spaces in downtown Coral Gables, and we want the public to embrace the Plaza as a place to utilize for recreation, for a brown bag lunch or for simple relaxation,” Rupp added. Last year, from January through March, the Plaza was the site of the weekly Lunchtime Jazz in the Gables, always welcoming a great crowd. With the unveiling of the transformed Plaza, the Museum intends to create the same atmosphere all year long. “We would like to see the Plaza ‘park’ activated every day,” Rupp said. The City Beautiful is honored as a finalist in America in Bloom’s National Photo Contest BY BROOKE BLOOM LAM

ORAL GABLES RESIDENTS HAVE LONG KNOWN their City is one of the most beautiful in the nation. Wanting the rest of the Country to share in this beauty, Coral Gables entered the Nationwide “America in Bloom Photo Contest” this summer. In America in Bloom’s regular National Awards Program, judges travel to cities for an in-depth, on-site evaluation based on evidence of municipal efforts, business and community group efforts, and residential efforts, with part of each score relating to community involvement across these three constituent groups. For the first year, however, America in Bloom, with cooperating sponsorship from Home & Garden Showplace and Monrovia Nursery, announced an exciting new endeavor to encourage and recognize beautification efforts through a new annual photography contest. Cities and towns across the United States were evaluated on their overall beauty as demonstrated by a submitted portfolio of up to 18 photos. Participants were encouraged to submit photography exemplifying Floral Displays, Landscaped Areas, Urban Forestry, Environmental Efforts, Heritage Preservation, and Overall Impression. “We take a lot of pride in the beauty of our City,” said Coral Gables Marketing Manager, Economic Sustainability Department for Michelle Cash, “so, we had a lot of photography to choose from.” After narrowing down the large group of images, Coral Gables submitted 17 photographs of different environments/subjects

and places within the City that it felt best reflected the suggested photo categories. The City Beautiful lived up to its name when it was chosen as one of four finalists in the competition. Thirty cities had entered the competition and Coral Gables was the only Finalist from Florida. “We are privileged to be selected as a finalist,” Cash said. “It is a huge honor for a City of our size,” she added. Cities were divided into three population groups of small, medium, and large designations. Coral Gables entered in the Small City Population Group of under 50,000. Announcement of the winning cities, as portrayed by the submitted portfolios, was made at the America in Bloom Annual Symposium and Awards Program, which was held in Philadelphia on October 2 – 4. Although the small population category was won by Lewisburg, West Virginia, “we remain honored to have been a finalist among great cities from across the nation,” Cash noted. America in Bloom envisions communities across the country as welcoming and vibrant places to live, work, and play benefitting from colorful plants and trees; enjoying clean environments; celebrating heritage; and planting pride through volunteerism. It promotes nationwide beautification through education and community involvement by encouraging the use of flowers, plants, trees, and other environmental and lifestyle enhancements. D.A.R.E. Arts & Crafts Fair Raising Funds for Schools BY BROOKE BLOOM LAM

(DRUG Abuse Resistance Education) Program from local elementary schools, Palmetto Bay Community Outreach Officer Patience Glasko went through training to become D.A.R.E. certified. D.A.R.E. is a police officer-led series of classroom lessons that teaches children from kindergarten through 12th grade how to resist peer pressure and live productive drug and violence-free lives. After receiving her certification, Officer Glasko worked to bring the program back to local elementary schools including Coral Reef, Perrine, Howard Drive, and Alexander Montessori. Certification was the first step to bringing the program back, but funding was also

necessary, not only for implementing the program at schools, but for supplies, workbooks and diplomas. Although the program received some funds from Palmetto Bay allocated for community oriented programming in the schools, Officer Glasko and the Community Outreach Team needed another source of funding. The D.A.R.E. Arts and Crafts Fair was the answer to this problem. Now in its 5th year, the D.A.R.E. Arts & Crafts Fair will take place on November 15. The event is expected to raise more than $3,000 in additional dollars to purchase the much-needed instructional aids. The Fair mixes family-fun activities with more than 80 vendor booths selling everything from unique jewelry, ceramics, photography and artwork to soaps, plants, clothing, food, and cool drinks. The festival also includes a Home Depot Kids Zone, a bounce house, face painting, student performances, and the possible appearance of last year’s popular antique car show. The Fair will take place on the East side of Coral Reef Park in the grass around the pavilion from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is no entrance fee. “Each year, hundreds of school children around the Village of Palmetto Bay benefit from D.A.R.E.,” said Officer Glasko. “The highly acclaimed program gives kids the skills they need to avoid involvement in drugs, gangs, and violence.” DARE was founded in 1983 in Los Angeles and has proven so successful that it is now being implemented in 75 percent of our nation’s school districts and in more than 43 countries around the world. N NOVEMBER 19TH, THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI Multiple Sclerosis Center of Excellence will host its 6th annual Shop to Stop MS from 6 pm to 9 pm at Saks Fifth Avenue, Dadeland. What could be better than a night of shopping, food, and an open bar? Raising money for a wonderful cause while enjoying all of these things. Guests of this charitably chic event will sip cocktails, dine on delicious tastings from local restaurants, and enjoy live music from the UM Frost School of Music. Last year alone, the event welcomed 300 guests and raised $50,000. With the help of sponsorships over the years, the Stop to Shop events have raised $250,000 for MS research and patient care. As a thank you to sponsors, a special dinner, catered by Fare to Remember, is hosted the night before the event. Pinecrest and Palmetto Elementary Schools Invite the Community to Their Film/Fun Fests BY BROOKE BLOOM LAM

OVEMBER IS A BUSY MONTH FOR LOCAL elementary schools, Pinecrest and Palmetto, whose Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs) are busy with their fundraising efforts. Pinecrest’s Film Fest and Palmetto’s Fun Fest are gearing up to be exciting days of games, fun, entertainment, food, and most importantly, great days of fundraising for the various schools.

PINECREST’S FILM FEST

Pinecrest’s Film Fest kicks off with a school wide poster contest. Helping to increase excitement around the event, the posters help get the word out about the Film Fest. The homeroom with the most submissions wins a popsicle party. Co-chairs Elyssa Lewis and Erin Kobetz have worked to plan a wonderful event. “This is our largest fundraiser of the year,” said Lewis. “It brings out the entire school and the community.” On November 22, the Film Fest will delight guests with a dunk tank and 10-15 different rides, including the “Titanic” Slide, as well as bumper cars, a photo booth, swings and a bungee jump. Guests can win and collect tickets at the game booths, hosted by each classroom, and stop by the redemption booth for exciting prizes including gumball machines, skateboards, basketballs, among others. In addition to all the fun, food vendors, such as the Hard Rock Café, Power Pizza, and Giardinos Gourmet Salads, will be selling food. Hip Pops, a food truck which offers customizable variations of ice cream, yogurt pops, and more, will also attend. Food vendors donate a percentage of their profits back to the school. Crepemaker will go above and beyond by donating 100% of its profits back to Pinecrest. To help raise more funds, a silent auction will start online in mid-November and finish at the Film Fest. Big ticket auction items include a Ritz Carlton Key Biscayne vacation and a trip to a North Carolina mountain cabin. Many other local businesses donated items as well. All proceeds from the event help the PTA fulfill school wish lists, which totaled over $75,000 last year. Thanks to the generosity of parents and community sponsorships, the PTA hopes to fulfil all wish lists this year. “Our teachers receive a lot of materials and funding because of this event,” said Lewis. “This is how we keep Pinecrest, Pinecrest.”

Gift certificates from local restaurants, tickets to Sea World, and a Laser Tag party are other items to be coveted. At the end of the day, a live auction will take over to auction off school privileges such as premiere reserved seating at the Performing Arts performances, VIP parking spaces, and more. “It’s fun to see everyone come out and bid on these,” says Hodur. Funds raised from the Fun Fest will support the Media Center, bullying prevention programs, classroom technology, and the school’s science initiative, among other things. “Our Fun Fest isn’t just the biggest fundraiser of the year at Palmetto Elementary,” said Mr. Eric Torres, Palmetto Elementary School Principal, “it’s also our biggest FUNraiser.” The Fun Fest also has an impact other than raising necessary funds for the school. “Our community really comes together and simply enjoys the day,” Torres added. “It’s the event our children talk about all year long.” Both events are open to the community. Tickets can be purchased individually or bands for unlimited rides or games will be available as well. Palmetto Elementary’s event will take place on November 11 from 11am – 4pm. N SEPTEMBER 24, PALMETTO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL OPENED ITS DOORS to hundreds of grandparents and other family members for its annual Generations Day. Guests gathered in the cafeteria, which was filled to overflowing, where they were treated to breakfast from the PTA, and entertained by the school’s awardwinning cheerleaders and jazz combo. Following the morning broadcast, which was carried live to the cafeteria, family members visited classrooms to meet teachers and participate with the students in projects and activities. Some such activities included creating family artwork together. In some classes, students and grandparents traced handprints or drew each other, while in others, they jointly created a family portrait. Another class activity consisted of conversations about what school life was like “then”, when the grandparents were students, versus “now”. “We try to stress the importance of transmitting identity from one generation to the next,” remarked Didi Weinberg, Generations Day Chair. “In our ever-busy and complicated lives, we have become challenged to provide the true meaning of family. Our children are fortunate to know that so many of another generation are proud and honored to share this day with them.” Family members came from near and far, taking the opportunity to soak up all that Palmetto Elementary has to offer. This year, the event was held during the Fall Book Fair, bringing together two of the school’s most treasured events. Lines for the registers wrapped around the media center as volunteers worked feverishly to ring up purchases. Despite the waits, the atmosphere was lively, with lots of laughter. Following the class visits and Book Fair shopping, many guests stayed to take their grandchildren and friends to Lunch Bunch. “This event may only last a morning, but the memories made in that short window will last a lifetime,” said Principal Eric Torres. “The children love to have their grandparents and other relatives visit their school, and the experience gives families a foundation to engage with their child about education going forward. The positive impact of this truly makes Generations Day one of the most important events we hold all year.”

AP: What every 8th grade parent needs to know BY BROOKE BLOOM LAM

ITH MULTIPLE OPTIONS, MANY PARENTS OF 8TH GRADERS FACE A TOUGH decision about where to send their child to high school. Decisions between traditional public schools, private schools, charters and magnets - all vying for students and tax dollars - can be overwhelming. With that in mind, many Miami area high schools use Advanced Placement programs to attract incoming students. It can be difficult for parents and students to analyze the mountain of information and marketing directed at them over the course of 8th grade. In response to the marketing avalanche surrounding high school selection and specialized programs, the Miami Palmetto Senior High School (MPSH) PTSA and the Palmetto Middle School (PMS) PTSA created an information seminar called “Advanced Placement: What every 8th grade parent needs to know.” The seminar will be held on November 13 at 7 PM in the Palmetto Middle School Auditorium. It will focus on five key areas of discussion: 1) What is Advanced Placement?; 2) Should my child take an AP course as a freshman?; 3) What are the keys to success?; 4) What are the benefits of AP classes?; and 5) What is the difference between Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate? MPSH Advanced Placement teacher Julianne Farkas and Dr. Allison Harley, Principal of MPSH, will be presenting the seminar along with Anna Hochkammer, President of the MPSH PTSA.

Miami’s secondary school market is unusual in that it offers Advanced Placement courses starting in 9th grade. Nationwide, only a small percentage of 9th graders are able to take Advanced Placement courses. Passing rates on AP exams vary greatly among high school programs, and course offerings can be very different at different high schools as well. It’s important that parents understand how to separate hype from reality. “Most parents never ask about the school’s passing rate on AP exams; they are simply attracted to the amount of AP classes the school offers,” notes Hochkammer “Some schools may pass 25% of their students, while another may have a passing rate closer to 70% on the very same exam, “ she explained. Hochkammer also pointed out that for freshmen, the quality of the program and the instructors can have an even greater impact on student performance. Mariel Wenger, the mother of a current high school freshman, recalled how informative last year’s 2013 Advanced Placement information session was for her. “It provided me with invaluable information about different programs and resources that the high schools offer, many of which I was unaware of until the presentation,” she said. “I left the meeting confident that Palmetto High School was the best option for my daughter.” Palmetto Middle School’s PTSA President Linda Dwyer is grateful to Miami Palmetto Senior High for presenting such valuable information. “We need to know our options” said Dwyer, the parent of an 8th grader. “MPSH and PMS are a family, and as such, family need to look out for each other.” The seminar is open to the public and will take place at Miami Palmetto Senior High, located at 7460 Sw 118th Street, Pinecrest, FL 33156 To Advertise in The Florida Villager, Please call 786-505-1817

HE CAMPUS OF MIAMI PALMETTO SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL can certainly be categorized as a diverse area within the Village of Pinecrest. A solid argument could be made that in fact, it is the most diverse area of Pinecrest. There are poets, mathematicians, history fanatics, and future Broadway sensations, even those with athletic prowess. But there’s one group that often is overlooked and ultimately forgotten among this diverse group of talented young individuals… the business gurus. It seems the entrepreneurial mindsets of these young and talented individuals often fall through the cracks in our community’s view. Yet, within the walls of Palmetto, it’s quite contrary to what it appears. The forgotten business students are loud and they’re proud of their skills. These are students of Palmetto’s Junior Achievement program. For those who don’t know, Junior Achievement is a nationally recognized program. Many extremely successful people got their first taste of the business world through this organization. The program is structured to offer students a real-life perspective of the business world. Led by Mylene Exposito, the students of this program learn through hands-on activities and truly get a first-rate experience. This experience is gained by running a small business known as Strictly Panther Business. According to Mrs. Exposito, Strictly Panther Business offers students the opportunity to “[Learn] to run a business from inception to liquidation, taking into account the community and population, and ultimately contributing a portion of our profit to a local charity.” As part of the program, all types of products are developed and sold by Strictly Panther Business and the Junior Achievement students under the brand of PantherStrong. Examples of some of the items that have been sold this year are glow in the dark wristbands, sunglasses, and hair ties all allowing the students to show their Palmetto Pride. At the beginning of the year, all of the students in the class are given the opportunity to buy stock in their company. Through their hard work and development in skills from across the business world, such as marketing and finance, the students determine what the stock price will be at liquidation and how much money they will be rewarded with, which they give back to charity. In addition to the hands-on experience of the class, local business owner Valerie Silver (who is the JA community sponsor) comes into the classroom once a week and provides tips and guides the students with her expertise. With her help, the SPBers learn the ins-and-outs of the often very confusing and intimidating business world. Miami Palmetto Senior High School is the perfect place for aspiring business majors to get their start. Just ask the founder of Amazon…

HOW DID ROIG ACADEMY BEGIN? WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND?

I founded my school because I saw an unfilled need in the community and an opportunity to bring a vision to fruition. For years I witnessed children exhausted by after school tutoring multiple days a week, so I envisioned a program that would incorporate the same strategies I was using to tutor in a full day program. By doing this, I was ensuring that students could maximize from our learning methodologies during the day and be free to engage in extra-curricular activities. The goal was for

my students to feel accomplished, empowered, enjoy their childhood and thrive as individuals. My background in education is quite extensive. I hold an M.S. in Emotional Behavior Disorders and Learning Disabilities from the University of Miami, as well as a B.S. in Education with a concentration in Special Education from Nova Southeastern University. I have over 20 years of experience in the education field which includes teaching and tutoring children with isolated struggles and my years as a Placement Specialist with Miami-Dade County Public Schools. My continuing education studies and involvement include topics relating to Reading / Language disorders Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders, Executive Function issues and parent coaching.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STUDENT POPULATION?

Our student population is very diverse. It ranges from children that are intellectually superior to those that are academically on target but challenged with a learning difficulty, excluding autism, developmental delays or behavioral issues which all fall outside of our realm of specialization. By placing students in a smaller environment as opposed to a class of twenty

our students to once again, be successful in a larger learning environment. For over 13 years, The Roig Academy had provided exceptional education and differentiated instruction. Leading research-based concepts, teaching strategies and methodologies are infused into our curriculum thus making learning a positive experience once again.

WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT THE ROIG ACADEMY?

At The Roig Academy we’ve established our unique approach – Roig Approach We implement a variety of signature tools unique to our school and students. These tools integrate visual, verbal and interactive learning to ensure our students engage and progress according to their thought process and preferred learning styles. The amount of recognition they receive is directly related to their effort and performance, but never emphasizes on what they are lacking.

T’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN…THE TIME WHEN WE START TO PLAN HOLIDAY trips and make travel arrangements. Which leads us to the big question, “what should we do with the dog?” The two most common solutions are boarding the dog or hiring a pet sitter. Now some new pet owners may not know the difference between the two. Simply put, boarding is when you take your pet to a facility where it will stay throughout your trip, while a pet sitter is someone who you hire to come to your home to visit and care for your animal on a daily basis. In this article, we’re going to focus on the role of the pet sitter, what information you need to provide and what you should expect. As we mentioned earlier, a pet sitter is someone you have come into your home to look after your dog. During your first interview with prospective sitters, you should go over your pet’s needs and any and all instructions you have for their care. The potential sitter should then create and present you with a care plan of what they think will work best for your pet based on this information. Now, as the needs of pets can often change, it is essential that you meet prior to departing on your trip to make sure that the sitter feels 100% prepared to provide the best care for your pet, including details of any changes in your pet’s health or emotional well being. After each visit, your pet sitter should leave notes, so that upon your return you know exactly what happened with your pet on a daily basis. They should send you frequent pictures of your furry babies, so that at all times during your vacation you are assured that your pet is happy and well cared for. O YOU WORRY ABOUT WHAT SCRUFFY IS DOING WHILE you’re at work? Well, worry no more. Digital technology for pets has invaded the pet consumer world making it possible for us to stay connected with our pets 24/7. Manufacturers of digital gadgets have taken notice of the strong bond between people and their pets and of the 55 billion dollars pet owners invest every year in their companions. If you’ve ever wondered how the world looks through the eyes of your pet, consider the GOPRO camera. This tiny waterproof camera can be fitted onto your dog’s collar or a special harness mounted on your dog’s back. YouTube is filled with all the creative ways pet owners have put their GOPRO to use. On the other hand, if your pet is the sedentary type and you wonder what they do during those long hours when you’re not home, the DROPCAM is for you. This tiny home security camera has an integrated microphone that will allow you not only to spy on Scruffy but also to speak to him, all through a smartphone application. If what you’re concerned about is your pet’s lack of exercise when you are not home, then seek the PET CUBE. This security home camera has, in addition to a microphone, a laser light to play with your dog. The laser can be manipulated through your smart phone app. Not impressed? Then consider inviting all your friends on Facebook to play with your dog and the laser light through THEIR smart phone App. In need for objective data? How about an activity monitor the size of an oreo cookie that can be placed on your dog’s collar? It is still to be seen the effects of this advanced technology on our pets. Closely monitoring your pet can give you a great feeling of doing an efficient and successful job raising your four legged buddy. The information obtained by activity monitors and cameras can be shared with your vet to aid in identifying causes of obesity and anxiety in your pet. However, there are some concerns for potential negative effects of this technology. Veterinary behavior specialists are worried that the long distance laser light game, for example, may facilitate development of a common obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in dogs known as “shadow chasing,” or that listening to your voice while not able to see you when alone in the house, may aggravate a separation anxiety disorder. Remember, before you invest good money on a digital gadget for your pet, consider it’s purpose and practicality. 5 Tips for Avoiding a Contentious Family Court Battle BY VANESSA VASQUEZ DE LARA, FAMILY & PROBATE ATTORNEY

IVORCES AND PATERNITY cases are very difficult and emotional in the best of circumstances. Making decisions about emotional issues like parental responsibility and time sharing when emotions are already running high can also feel overwhelming. I’d like to offer 5 suggestions to help keep this difficult process from becoming contentious. No one benefits from an ugly custody battle – especially your kids! Remember that you and the other parent are both under a lot of stress. It’s hard to have any sympathy for your spouse or the other parent when you’re in the middle of a court case, but it’s useful to remember that they may be having difficulty coping too. If you try to have patience with both your own feelings and those of the other parent, it will make dealing with everything easier. Don’t hesitate to get help from friends, family, or counselors if you’re feeling overwhelmed, and give the other parent the benefit of the doubt where it seems warranted. Be willing to compromise where it seems reasonable and in the best interests of the children.

Think through the details. What kinds of arrangements will most benefit you and your children? It’s helpful if you have plans in place that are going to make it as easy as possible for both you and your children to move forward. This will probably involve plenty of time with both parents. Think through potential schedules and transportation arrangements. If you do not have a flexible employer, don’t demand a time sharing schedule that will be impossible to follow through on. Use mediation or alternative methods of resolution. Mediation services during divorce proceedings can be extremely helpful. They can be invaluable in assisting on establishing time sharing arrangements and in working out what kinds of agreements will be most beneficial for everyone. Mediation can also assist in narrowing the issues for court, even if not resolving the entire dispute. Other alternative methods for resolving cases can involve collaborative law, where the parties enter into binding agreements to collaborate with each other, and private judging, where a former family court judge can hear the case outside of the public eye. Stay calm. If everyone stays calm, it will be much easier to reach sensible decisions. Shouting matches can undo months of

progress; keeping things polite and friendly is the best way to move forward. If keeping calm is difficult in each other’s presence then allow the attorneys to assist in negotiations to ensure calmer heads will prevail. Don’t forget to pay attention to your kids. Sometimes you get so wrapped up in worrying about custody that you forget about the important thing: the kids. They need your attention, and it will be rejuvenating and relaxing for you to spend time with them. In the midst of all the stress of a court case, some fun time with the children will help you keep things in perspective. Family court cases can be extremely stressful, but always treat the other party as you want to be treated. If that doesn’t work, an experienced family law attorney can be your best ally. Stock your pantry and refrigerator: You want your guests to feel at home while they stay with

you, so stock up on their favorite foods, snacks, and drinks. Have a variety of healthy options too – like cut up veggies or fruit – since holiday eating tends to be rich and heavy. »» Don’t forget the holiday touches: A sprig of winterberries, a bough of garland, or a Cinnamon Broom makes any room cheerful and holiday ready. How About a Re-set Cruise? BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ

ITH THE HOLIDAY SEASON UPON US, STRESS LEVELS RISE AND EXHAUStion sets in. So here is something to think about…a gift to yourself this season; a re-set cruise. A cruise where it is all about you. Where you can completely relax, hit the re-set button and step foot on land completely rejuvenated and ready to take on 2015. I boarded the Caribbean Princess with Princess Cruises on a Thursday, and docked back in Ft. Lauderdale on Monday morning feeling like a new person. It was a four day cruise with no ports of call, only relaxing days at sea, and one day at their out island, Princess Cay. Under gray skies, we pulled away from Terminal 2, drinking a Bahamas Bay Breeze and listening to the sounds of Pitbull. No one even noticed the approaching clouds as the crew had everyone up and dancing to the phenomenal band, Epithani. By the time everyone was doing the YMCA on deck, we had left the city’s skyline in the mist and were a floating oasis adrift on the sea. That first night I watched the sun set from my balcony, and then watched Godzilla under the stars, wrapped in a red plaid blanket. As crewmembers passed out popcorn, I settled back on my lounge chair and thought, “Life is good.” Each morning I was greeted by my cabin steward Pionono Bermedez’s, infectious smile, and during the entire cruise he made me feel like I was home. My mornings were filled with yoga, a spa treatment at the Lotus Spa and a healthy breakfast from the buffet. Afternoons were spent on the pool deck with a book in hand (one of many I brought), a nap and at least one activity. To be honest, there were so many interesting ones to choose from I felt like I missed out on some. I did a dance class, wine tasting, teatime with Jackie, where I learned about the jewelry Jackie O wore, and of course, listening to the band Epithani. Ok, I admit it, I was a 55 year old groupie; wherever they played, I was there. They kept me on the dance floor all night! Speaking of which, nighttime on the ship was whatever I wanted it to be. One night I did happy hour at the Wheelhouse, then sat on the deck and gazed at the stars. I did a Country Western Hoe Down and ate at one of their specialty restaurants, Sabatini’s. The great thing was that I could eat at any time I wanted, as casual or dressy as I wanted. One night, I opted for pizza on my own balcony listening, to the waves and enjoying the stillness and solitude of the night. Another night, I went to Karaoke after enjoying the amazing talent in the main show. Now for the crème de la crème, Princess Cay on Eleuthera. I have been to many out islands but this was by far the best. I could have built a hut and stayed. There was a band playing by the bar and pastel colored Adirondack chairs dotting the beach. Lounge chairs were strategically placed under coconut palms, and drinks were flowing. Grabbing a frozen drink, I made my way into the water and floated into Heaven. There were floats, paddleboards, water bikes, kayaks and banana boat rides to occupy the time, but I chose the Dune Buggy Heritage Adventure Tour. I had never driven a dune buggy so it was a check on my bucket list. We ended up at Lighthouse Beach where I spent 20 minutes swimming in beautiful, crystal turquoise water. Hut #2. Before I knew it, my time in paradise was up and I was on the tender back to the ship. Packing my bags the night before we docked back in the real world, I realized how much I had needed to re-set myself. This cruise was just what the doctor ordered. I shut my cabin door, walked up to the top deck and did what any self-respecting 55 year old would do…I danced the night away under the stars. United Way of MiamiDade Young Leaders held their first-ever interactive cooking and eating experience, “Build Your Own Brunch,” modeled after VeritageMiami’s wildly popular Interactive Dinner. More than 200 guests filled every available seat at the InterContinental Miami’s Bayfront ballroom and prepared a threecourse brunch, under the tutelage of some of Miami’s most innovative chefs. SEEN ON SCENE PAINT THE MALL PINK EVENT AT THE FALLS On October 11 from 1pm-4pm, The Falls hosted their annual Paint the Mall Pink event in Center Court, presented by Jackson Health System & Susan G. Komen® Miami/Ft. Lauderdale. Paint the Mall Pink is a community event promoting women’s health awareness and supporting the fight against breast cancer. Customers were able to learn more about Jackson South Community Hospital’s breast health services, register to participate in the Susan G. Komen Miami/Ft. Lauderdale Race for the Cure® and those who were already registered were able to pick up their race packets. Those in attendance enjoyed giveaways and sponsored free hairstyling and massages. On September 28, visitors of the 2nd Annual Bridal Expo at Thalatta Estate Park got to enjoy the natural splendor of Palmetto Bay’s only bay-shore park while meeting professionals in the event-planning industry. Dozens of caterers provided free food and beverage samples to guests while they enjoyed live DJ music. Full public access to all park amenities was also provided, including the inside of the Main House, Carriage House, prep kitchen facility, Bridal Suite, and the sprawling grounds of the mansion.

INSTALLATION CEREMONY FOR NEW HEAD OF SCHOOL

Palmer Trinity School recently held an Installation Ceremony for Patrick H.F. Roberts as its new Head of School. Held on campus at the PTS gymnasium, The Right Reverend Calvin O. Schofield, Jr., Retired Bishop of Southeast Florida, presided over the ceremony. The ceremony commenced with a trumpet voluntary performed by Palmer Trinity’s music students, followed by a processional with bagpipes into the gymnasium, in honor of Mr. Roberts’ Scottish ancestry.

PAPER MACHE TRICK-OR-TREAT BASKETS

The Riviera Preparatory School art students created paper mache trickor-treat baskets based upon the summer reading characters in “Animal Farm.” The students distributed their hand-made animal baskets on field day to children enrolled in Children’s Resource Fund School. CRF is a school for students with special educational needs. The CRF children filled these baskets with treats provided by Riviera Preparatory students during a trick-or-treat activity on their campus.
