A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM Shakespeare’s joyous comedy about the universal theme of love and its complications: lust, disappointment, confusion, marriage. A Midsummer Night’s Dream brilliantly conjoins four intertwined stories: the marriage of the Athenian Duke Theseus to the Amazon queen Hippolyta; the warring Oberon and Titania, king and queen of the fairies; the madcap follies of four lovers in a forest; and the comically earnest efforts of a group of working men to stage a love-play for the royal wedding. The Banyan Bowl stage will breathe with the miraculous charms and powerful illusions of love. Pinecrest Garden s , 11000 S.W. 57th Avenue, Pinecrest, Florida 3315 6 . Girl Scouts of Tropical Florida: Awarded $5,000
The Foundation awarded this grant toward the Girl Scout Leadership Development Program, which serves 200 girls in Coral Gables. The funds will be used toward Girl Scout memberships, patches, activities and camperships for girls to attend camps (two of which are located in Coral Gables Camp Mahachee and Coral Gables Little House). Additionally, the organization seeks to collaborate with Safe Schools South Florida to ensure the success of
their annual Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) Summit at Coral Gables Congregational Church and with the intention of assisting in the development of a GSA at Coral Gables Senior High School.
Actor’s Playhouse: Awarded $2,500

South Floridians living with multiple sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system, interrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progression, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving closer to a world free of MS. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society mobilizes people and resources to drive research for a cure and to address the challenges of those affected by MS. To fulfill this mission, the Society funds cutting-edge research, drives change through advocacy, facilitates professional education, collaborates with MS organizations around the world, and provides programs and services designed to help people with MS and their families move their lives forward. Through its home office and 50-state network of chapters, the MS Society has devoted $122.1 million to programs and services that assisted more than one million people. To move closer to a world free of MS, the Society also invested $43.3 million to support more than 350 new and ongoing research projects around the world. In addition to honoring David Schulman, the MS Gala itself will include a champagne reception, fashion show, silent auction, and raffle prizes. A successful local businessman, Schulman joined the board of trustees of the National MS Society, South Florida Chapter in 1982, just months before his wife, Carrie, was diagnosed with MS. “David Schulman is an extraordinary friend and supporter of the National MS Society for almost 30 years,” said Karen Schneier Dresbach, chapter president of the National MS Society, South Florida Chapter. “He and his beloved wife, Carrie, have been involved with the Gala since the event’s inception and have helped the luncheon raise more than $5.4 million to accelerate research and provide important services for people affected by MS,” she said. As General Agent at the MassMutual/DBS Financial Group Fort Lauderdale, Schulman’s company takes its
corporate responsibility seriously. A wide variety of programs provide in-kind donations and financial support to non-profit organizations. Education is also a priority for the company which offers an extensive array of programs and support for those in need. Among its programs and initiatives that provide opportunities for students to prepare for their futures, Mass Mutual/ DBS Financial Group provides educational expenses following the loss of a parent through its unique LifeBridges Free Life Insurance Program as well as scholarship programs for students. This year, MassMutual/DBS Financial Group will return as title sponsor of the MS Gala for the 10th year. Other event sponsors include South Florida Audi Dealers, the official automobile sponsor, and J.R. Dunn Jewelers, the official jewelry sponsor. Platinum-level sponsors include Bienenfeld, Lasek & Starr, LLC; Hotwire Communications; the Leo Goodwin Foundation; Sandie & Norman Schulman; Ultimate Software; and Terra Group.

Donors were invited to purchase a “Supermodel Package,” complete with professionally styled hair and make-up and the opportunity to strut down the runway in a design selected especially for them. LORIDA BLUE MEMBERS NOW HAVE NEW CONVENIENT ACCESS TO HEALTHcare thanks to HealthSpot and Miami Children’s Hospital (MCH). The two organizations have teamed up to offer patients a convenient alternative option to healthcare with telehealth technology at Florida Blue’s Retail Center in Miami. Through a unique walk-in kiosk, the HealthSpot station offers a private 8-foot-by-7-foot enclosure outfitted with touchscreens, medical devices and videoconferencing capabilities. This station enables Miami Children’s medical providers to see and treat adults and children members age two and older from the remote location. The station is also supported by an on-site accredited medical attendant. A pioneer in connected care, HealthSpot has built a comprehensive healthcare delivery platform that combines cloud-based software with the award-winning HealthSpot station, digital medical devices, and mobile applications. The program is supported by a state-of-the-art Telehealth Command Center, based on the hospital’s main campus, designed by doctors and consumer experts to support review of diagnostic information by board-certified clinicians through sophisticated videoconferencing. “At Miami Children’s, we always seek opportunities to serve children and families wherever the need arises,” said Dr. Narendra Kini, President and CEO of MCH. While in the past the program was geared toward children, it has now expanded to help adults as well. “Through our MCH Anywhere telehealth program we are reaching out to communities in the southern part of Miami-Dade County to offer convenient access to board-certified clinicians capable of serving adults and children,” Dr. Kini added. “It is our hope that this unique service will be a valued convenience to Florida Blue members of all ages who reside within this lovely area.” The latest in a series of initiatives across the state focused on innovation and collaboration to deliver higher value for its members, “Florida Blue believes […] efforts like this are critical to the future of healthcare,” said Penny Shaffer, South Florida Market President. “We are proud and excited to meet the growing needs of our members by providing this convenient and affordable option to access care.” Interested Florida Blue members can make an appointment or walk into the Retail Center and utilize the HealthSpot station for minor, common conditions and services such as: Fever, Colds and Flu, Rashes and Skin Conditions, Pinkeye and Styes, Earaches, Sore Throat, Sinus Infections, Upper Respiratory Infections, and Seasonal Allergies. Florida Occupational Healthcare Puts Its Patients First “Physical Therapy…the science of healing, the art of caring”. This is the motto of Florida Occupational Healthcare (FOHC). Just take a walk through their doors and you’ll see it’s true. Taking pride in the treatment of their patients on a medical and personal level, the staff at FOHC will treat you like family. Owner, Dr. Alex Pereda, opened the practice in 1998, believing he could make a difference. Knowing that physical therapy is about healing the body, Dr. Pereda also wanted to create an atmosphere that was client centered. As a professor at many local schools including Nova, Florida International University, and Miami-Dade College, Dr. Pereda teaches to “treat from your heart, not from your mind.” Dr. Pereda became a physical therapist as a second career after a spine fracture left him as a patient himself. After receiving his Bachelors in Physical Therapy from FIU in 1998, he later went on to receive his post-graduate doctorate degree from the University of St. Augustine, followed by a certificate in Manual Therapy, a certificate that only 5% of therapists nationwide possess. Holocaust Survivor Visits Palmetto Elementary School BY BROOKE BLOOM LAM
S
INCE 2007, FIFTH GRADE STUDENTS AT PALMETTO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL have read the Newbery Medal winning book, Number the Stars, by Lois Lowry. The book deals with the escape of a Jewish family from Copenhagen during World War II and centers around the friendship of two young girls. While students often grudgingly skim through assigned reading, “[s]tudents are enthralled by [this] historical fiction chapter book,” remarked fifth grade teacher Janice Ennis. They are also very interested in the assignments that go along with the book. “[The students] are meticulous with the related activities and projects that parallel the story,” Ennis added. Palmetto teachers have developed many enriching activities for the students to help them further apply what they’ve learned from the book. Some of the activities include designing a movie poster for the “release” of Number the Stars, researching Danes who influenced the outcome of the efforts to relocate Danish Jews, researching existing monuments that commemorate the events in Denmark during the covered time period, designing an original monument and explaining its significance and creating a Jeopardy game with categories and questions to be played in class. Though students are given various story related assignments dur- Julius Eisenstein speaks with students. ing their reading of the book, the culminating activity around the study of this book and this time in history is the most powerful. As in previous years, Palmetto students welcomed a Holocaust Survivor, to the school on November 12. Julius Eisenstein came to share his own World War II experience with the students. Offering a variety of stories, photographs and documents, visiting survivors have come to the school from various European countries, including Germany and Poland. The day allows the Survivors to educate the students and make sure the horrors of the Holocaust are never forgotten. “As an educator, I feel there is no better means of sharing this important part of our history than to bring a primary source to the children,” fifth grade teacher Donna Martinez said. “Our students feel the significance in a different, deeper way after hearing personal stories first-hand.” After spending time in the classrooms, Eisenstein, joined by Palmetto Elementary teachers and staff, attended a formal luncheon provided by the PTA and the fifth grade parents. “This opportunity of listening to a Holocaust Survivor helps the students understand the Holocaust really did happen, and that it’s not just a story from a book,” noted Palmetto Elementary Principal Eric Torres. “It is an experience the students will never forget.” To Advertise in The Florida Villager, Please call 786-505-1817

HEN STUDENTS UNDERSTAND HOW EDUCATION IS RELEVANT TO THEIR lives and future careers, they get excited. Invoking excitement is what Project Lead the Way (PLTW) does on a regular basis. PLTW offers a different approach to learning and teaching. Through an activity-, project-, and problem-based curriculum, PLTW gives students in kindergarten through high school a chance to apply what they know, identify problems, find unique solutions, and lead their own learning. This past November, the 2014 PLTW Summit took place in Indianapolis, and included more than 1,300 educators and leaders in the corporate, nonprofit and government sectors dedicated to helping students develop the knowledge and skills they need to succeed. The national event served as a catalyst for collaboration and strategies to help solve the education and workforce development challenges currently facing the country. At this year’s Summit, Claude Charron, Gulliver’s engineering and biomedical sciences department chair, received the prestigious 2014 Robert and Patricia Kern National Teacher of the Year award. Six other exemplary teachers from across the United States were also honored at the event, receiving National Teacher of Excellence Awards. Each of the seven instructors President and CEO Dr. Vince Bertram; Gulliver Engineering were recognized for their PLTW and Biomedical Sciences Department Chair Claude Charron and Dr. outstanding commitment Anne Jones, PLTW senior vice president and chief programs officer. to educating students in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) disciplines and preparing them with the skills to be successful in college and their careers. “Charron is a true leader and inspiration to our Gulliver community,” said Frank Steel, Gulliver’s head of schools. “This recognition proves that his dedication to our students, faculty and the school’s engineering programs are invaluable and do not go unnoticed.” PLTW selected their honorees based on strong alignment to the program’s foundational values of leadership, continuous improvement, innovation and accountability. These teachers have shown exceptional commitment to students, leadership at their schools and evidence of meaningful involvement in PLTW curriculum, assessment and professional development. Charron has taught at Gulliver since the late 1990s. He started the school’s state-ofthe-art engineering program in 2004, and created both the biomedical science program and the Middle School pre-engineering program in 2008. His students have received numerous national and international awards, including two National Championships in the Conrad Foundation’s Spirit of Innovation Challenge, for two different devices: a life-saving water filtration device that is now being used in Haiti, Nigeria, Argentina and the Philippines; and a clean energy system for developing countries. This unique concept was conceived when owner, Lourdes Leon-Vega, was pregnant with her second baby and was ordered to be on bed rest. Due to her limited mobility throughout the pregnancy, Leon-Vega found there were no Miami based companies catering to the various needs of expectant mothers, as well as an absence of certified baby planners that could help with the impending arrival of her second baby. With so many products and brands on the market to choose from, she made it her mission to not let other mothers experience her same situation. LeonVega decided to provide new and expectant mothers with vital information paired with only the best baby products available on the market. Tutti Bambini is proud to offer certified baby wearing experts, as well as certified baby planners who are available to deliver over 15 classes and assist customers at the store or by appointment.

FROM THE CHIEF
New Year Brings New Crime Prevention Ideas
W
E’VE GOT YOUR BACK!” IS THE NEW YEAR’S message that the CGPD is sending loud and clear to the entire community. The men and women of the Coral Gables Police Department have a renewed spirit of commitment toward protecting the lives and property of those who live and do business in the City Beautiful. With the recent appointment of Major Ed Hudak as Interim Police Chief, new ideas are being implemented not only to combat crime but also to engage better –and much more– with citizens. Now a new idea for burglary prevention is allowing police response to get there faster Coral Gables Interim when an alarm sounds for help. Police Chief Ed Hudak The new Quick Response Burglary Prevention Program, introduced recently by the Coral Gables City Commission as an emergency ordinance, allows alarm companies to immediately contact the Coral Gables Police Department for dispatch if the homeowner does not answer them on the first try. Previously, the alarm company had to call up to two other numbers provided to reach the homeowner before calling the CGPD for assistance. “By eliminating the unnecessary phone calls in situations when every second counts, Coral Gables residents will see faster police response times,” said Interim Police Chief Ed Hudak. “The goal is to increase our ability to respond to incidents of residential burglaries and catch the criminals.” No fee will be assessed to residents enrolled in the program for the first four false alarms in one calendar year. For non-participants of the program, only two free false alarms in one calendar year will be permitted before fees are applied. There is no charge
to enroll in the new program. To enroll, participants must fill out an Alarm User Registration Application available by calling 305-460-5280. The information is also available on the city’s website coralgables.com. After registering, participants need to inform their alarm company of program enrollment with an Alarm Company Notification Letter that will be provided by the City of Coral Gables. In the upcoming months, CGPD is also launching a social media presence to send out time-sensitive information and help citizens provide crimesolving tips. The new strategy is part of a wider plan to engage the locals more actively and keep the community informed about crime trends and what they can do to prevent crimes of opportunity. Concerned about an increase in crime within the city, residents wanted a different approach in patrolling, police visibility and community outreach, and that is exactly what CGPD is doing. “Expect to see more positive changes in our police force this year,” said Hudak. “Together with the City Manager and the members of the City Commission, our dedicated officers are committed to working closely with the community to keep our neighborhoods and commercial areas safe and protected all yearlong.”

You will absolutely gain flexibility doing yoga, but more importantly, you will create “structural integrity.” Yoga is body building. Bikram Yoga is designed with a set of checks and balances to help you achieve a natural body. It is diagnostic, then therapeutic. Once you know your limitations, you can slowly work to improve them. Before you’re going to gain flexibility, you have to gain the appropriate amount of strength and control. Exercises like running, weights, and cycling use “momentum,” while machines focus on “moving.” Yoga builds the body. Holding yoga postures in “stillness,” focuses on muscle control, moving slowly, efficient respiration, natural range of motion and fluidity, all while restructuring and re-educating the entire body. For those who can’t handle the impact of other exercises, yoga allows you to achieve great health!! It’s never too late to start!

Most yoga postures utilize every muscle in the body. In fact, it’s almost easier to mention which muscles are not being used. The postures can create the same bursts of increased heart rate as a 100 yard dash, except they allow you to stay in one place, with zero impact. Just like any endurance sport, you learn how to coordinate cardio and respiration for maximum power. During the Bikram Series, there are a handful of postures designed to get the heart rate going!

From the day you’re born, you breathe non-stop. In yoga, you learn “how to breath,” using the respiratory system to its full potential, and increasing lung capacity and range of motion. Yes, your lungs can change!! Bikram Yoga is a thorough workout, and breathing correctly is the key to achieving the benefits inside and outside of the yoga room. STRESS is one of the leading causes of disease. It can affect your hormones, blood pressure, sleep, and eating. Unfortunately, stress is a part of life, and can’t always be avoided. The list of research on stress related ailments is a mile long. How we cope is key. In yoga, “responding” rather than just “reacting” is what we practice, via breath control. Breathing can control your stress response and the physiological reactions that come with it. It’s like cross-training for your life!! Everyday, all over the world, people are improving their lives through Bikram Yoga.

The heat aids in warming up the body, but the majority of it is created by internal heat, which is created by the exercise. If you want to bend metal, you first have to warm it up, or else it will crack. The body is the same. The heat helps to reshape the body. When warmed up, it increases the ability to absorb oxygen. It does take some getting used to, and most people adapt after a few classes. The well ventilated room is heated to a little over 100 degrees, with 40% controlled humidity. It isn’t like being in the sun though, so unfortunately it won’t improve your tan. The warming aids in detoxing the internal organs and glands, clearing the pores, and boosting the immune system and metabolism. When you sweat, you release impurities. In recent studies, Bikram Yoga was found to create tremendous benefits for arterial stiffness, arthritis, tendonitis, blood pressure, sleep issues, anxiety/depression, and an increase in bone density. You will lose weight if needed, lose inches, and gain muscle.

015 IS HERE, IT’S TIME TO GET YOUR FITNESS BACK IN gear! This time as opposed to the past, let’s make it FUN and set-up to Last! 5 keys to a successful workout regimen: 1. Set Goals (SMART) 2. Develop a Plan 3. More Work in Less Time 4. Change is Great 5. Have FUN Set Goals – Specific Measureable Achievable Results Time. Simply stated, keep your goals specific, measure through app or simply write them down in a logbook, be realistic & make sure you can achieve these goals, stay motivated looking forward to the results and finally, enjoy the process, have a good time with your fitness. Developing a plan keeps you on track and you will be less likely to have as many “cheat days,” resulting in a more desirable outcome. More work in less time is the HIT principle. High Intensity Training, where you push your body to its threshold every workout, with sound mechanics & technique. This will in turn, burn more calories in a shorter period of time. Change it up, variation is the KEY! You have to shock your system in order to get results. Routine is the enemy. A program must be switched out every 4 weeks, at a minimum. Having FUN is by far the most important key to success. Once working out becomes a chore and undesirable, your mind and body will slowly begin to shut down. Children and Exercise BY GABRIEL LAMAS, OWNER, FITNESS TOGETHER
I
’M SURE THAT MANY OF US HAVE HEARD THE NOTION THAT children should not engage in “heavy” resistance training. I am also sure that many of us remember the somewhat odd and disturbing documentary of the heavy weight lifting child dubbed “Little Hercules” who – at an unreasonably young age was extremely muscular. Now, I don’t think that any of us want our children to look like “Little Hercules,” by any means, but we do want the next generation to be happy, healthy and well adjusted with a positive quality of life. We know that exercise provides these benefits to adults, but what is the truth about children and working out? Could it have harmful consequences? The scary reality is that, according to the Center for Disease Control, in 2012, 11% of children and 12% of adolescents were obese. That is a frightening statistic that more than 1 of every 5 teenagers is obese – and thus in danger of all the associated health risks. Much of this is a result of an easier accessibility to high calorie foods and a greater level of inactivity. These two factors combined leads to truly deathly consequences and it is affecting younger and younger people in the United States.
In the past, research and anecdotal evidence had indicated that heavy weight lifting at a young age could cause the growth plates (the parts of the bone responsible for lengthening – i.e. getting taller – as one gets older) to close. This was the primary reason that weight lifting was often contraindicated for children. Since then, there has been conflicting evidence – often pointing to the contrary, that it is has no real negative affect on growth – regarding weight lifting at a young age. While I would not necessarily recommend forcing your youngster to squat hundreds of pounds – if anything, simply because most kids would not find this “fun” – and spending their formative years being forced to associate health and fitness with something negative could be detrimental – I would recommend teaching children to have fun exercising. Whether it be cardiovascular, with their bodyweight, or just engaging in sports, the more active they are at a young age, the more the risk of childhood obesity and its associated health problems are mitigated. Take your family, kids included, out for a fun day at the park to play some fitness related games, run around, play Frisbee and teach your kids the positive effects of exercise at a young age to build those healthy habits – it will help, if not save, their lives in the long run! Passionate about the fitness business, Gabriel Lamas began owning franchised fitness studios at 23 years old. Originally from Massachusetts, Gabriel attended Florida International University and his fitness business holdings company, Gabriel Lamas Fitness LLC acquired the Fitness Together Miami brand his senior year of college. Conveniently located in South Miami and Coconut Grove, Fitness Together Miami has helped countless clients get in the best shape of their lives. 014 WAS A MILESTONE YEAR FOR GYMBOREE PLAY & Music franchise owner Coni Ensor Goudie. In addition to celebrating a 30 year anniversary and opening a new center in Palmetto Bay, her team successfully implemented a new technology system to further propel the business and improve the experience for customers. What started out as a small business thirty years ago has blossomed into a successful trio of locations across Miami offering unparalleled early-childhood classes for parents and their children. “We are among the top three franchises in the country, one of Coni Ensor Goudie the firsts on the East Coast with locations in Palmetto Bay, Coral Gables, and Kendall. We have now joined a growing franchise movement with over 700 centers across the globe, all dedicated to helping children learn through play. To see this baby grow with such intensity is so exciting”. It’s hard to believe one can still be so passionate 30 years on the job, but Ms. Goudie’s passion has grown along with her business. Though Goudie started out in the beauty industry, winning the Miss Florida title in 1972 and placing second runner up in the Miss USA pageant, her business skills are what really made her shine. In March 2014, she won Business Woman of the Year by the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce in the Entrepreneur Category. Giving back to the community that has supported her success is a tenet of her business strategy. Goudie and her staff are active in many charitable organizations for children, and have a special connection to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation along with the national corporate charity, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Coni’s Gymboree Play Music centers offer a unique learning experience for children and their parents. Walk into the new Palmetto location and you’ll see a fresh and innovative space for play, offering even more discovery and whole-child learning. Children are free to move and explore, as they explore brand new play challenges wrapped in vibrant color and texture. The new play equipment and state-of-the art flooring was custom-designed for young children by renowned Play Architect Jay Beckwith in collaboration with Gymboree’s early childhood play experts. It offers even more of the climbing, sliding and creative discovery you’ve come to love. As always, classes provide age-appropriate activities that create a personalized play experience for every child, allowing the learning to unfold at his or her own pace. Creativity and confidence are a powerful benefit for the children, but attending parents are also supported with a welcoming lobby and a coffee bar. Goudie invites moms to hang around the location before or after class. “Gymboree is not just for the child, but also for the mom. I want the moms to stay and meet each other to form community.” One of the unique aspects of the Gymboree program is that many of the kids in classes today are second generation Gymboree members. Prior students who return to the program as parents delight in the familiarity of the experience and what it meant to them as children. Visit Palmetto Bay and you’ll find all the elements you love about Gymboree, parachute fun, bubbles, and the iconic Gymbo who still loves to dance with guests. “The most exciting aspect of the new equipment is the enhanced challenge for the 3-5 year old kids, and the age-appropriate play opportunities it also offers babies and toddlers” explained Goudie. In addition to classic play classes, Gymboree also offers music and art. Our School Skills program for children ages 2.5 to 5 is a drop-off program in pre-school skills including programs like Handwriting without Tears. With a maximum of twelve children in a class and two teachers, the program is a great transitional program for kids who have grown up at Gymboree. We also offer a range of special events and oneo-kind Birthday parties to help parents celebrate those milestones. Whether attending classes to gain physical skills, educational skills, or make new friendships_Gymboree has it all. As Coni Ensor Goudie says, “It’s a good time to be a child.” Gymboree Play and Music’s Palmetto Bay location is at 14109 South Dixie Highway, Miami, Florida 33176. Play a Guitar – For the Fun of It!
mUSICIAnS DISCOUnT CEnTER
BY PENNY DANIELS
R
AISE YOUR HAND IF YOU HAVE EVER PLAYED “AIR GUITAR” WHEN LISTENing to music. Well … you are not alone. Air guitar is a form of dance and movement in which you pretend to play the guitar with exaggerated strumming and picking motions. It is often coupled with loud signing, lip-synching, fun and laughter. Playing the “air guitar” or even the guitar used in the video game “Guitar Hero” has inspired many people to start playing the guitar. This includes those without previous musical instrument experience or any musical knowledge. And for many, playing a musical instrument such as a guitar is something they have always wanted to do … it is an item on their “bucket list.”
What is the guitar and how do you play it? The guitar is a popular musical instrument that makes sound by strumming or plucking the strings with one hand while pressing down the string behind the raised element on the neck of the guitar with the other. There are several different types of guitars to choose from – classical (nylon-string guitar), bass guitar, and the electric guitar – to name just a few. The guitar is recognized as a primary instrument in various types of music such as blues, bluegrass, country, folk, jazz, reggae, rock, soul and pop. Playing the guitar is a mental and physical process. It can be played individually or in a group setting. The best thing you can do when you begin playing the guitar, is to receive lessons and watch/listen to other guitarists. You can often gain new knowledge and learn something new. Although the guitar is limited to three octaves (musical pitches), you can create a million plus unique songs. It is also one of the most convenient instruments there is. A guitar is very portable in comparison to many other instruments and can be used to play music almost anywhere. And once you learn how to play the guitar, it doesn’t take long finding others with that same interest and making music fill the air. Getting started is simple: let the professionals at Musicians Discount Center in South Miami help you find the guitar that suits you and fits your budget, too. They are the one stop music shop that has been sharing their expertise with others for many years. They offer new and used instruments, instrument rentals, rent to own programs and music lessons. KID’S CORNER
Q&A with Lil’ Jungle BY BROOKE BLOOM LAM
L
IL’ JUNGLE IS A HAIR SALON SPECIALIZING IN HAIR-CUTS FOR KIDS AND THE whole family. Take an inside peak at this local business with a Q&A session with Lil’ Jungle owner, Victor Lara.
HOW WAS THE IDEA FOR LIL’ JUNGLE BORN?
We have been open for four years now, although we actually started out with a different name - Zoo Cuts. To be honest, this business wasn’t my idea. It was started by my mother and my uncle-in-law. That partnership fell apart and my mother asked me if I wanted to run the business. I had no hesitations and after a couple of days of brain storming with my best friend, came up with the name Lil’ Jungle.
WE SPECIALIZE IN CHILDREN
WHAT DO YOU SPECIALIZE IN?
We have childrens DVDs, Nintendo Wii’s and free Wifi.
Children! I have an amazing staff of stylists that are super patient with children. Some kids don’t like getting haircuts, and they show it, but these stylists get it done and the kids look great. I have a feeling a lot of parents think we only cut kids hair but our stylists are more than capable of taking care of adults too. All of my stylists are great, but Gloria is particularly skillful with experience in everything from hairdos to coloring and everything in between.
HOW IS YOUR SHOP “KID-FRIENDLY”?
It’s colorful in here - a little too colorful – but, for kids it’s great because it looks like a fun place. In our waiting room, we have toys and TVs, two of which have Nintendo Wiis. Our big TV has anything from sports to kid’s shows on at any time. The real fun, though, starts on the cutting floor, where we have three chairs for bigger kids and adults and five chairs for the little ones. The five “little” chairs include an airplane and a cop car. Each station has its own wall mounted TV where we can put on any children’s channel or a movie from our selection of DVDs.
WHAT DO YOU DO TO EASE LITTLE ONES FEARS?
Mom/Dad & Kid Special Mom & Kid $34, Dad & Kid $30
Haircuts • Shape ups Bang cuts • Blow Dries High Lights • Styling Keratin Treatments
Sibling Special
$1 off each kids cut
First Haircut Package $20 Includes a certificate, hair sample & picture
$3 OFF ANY CUT
With Coupon. One per family, not to be combined with other promotions or specials. Exp. 1/31/15
We differ from other local haircut spots when it comes to patience. If a child is scared, we first try to be as friendly as possible. If that doesn’t work, we try their favorite TV channel or movie. The last thing we try is a lollipop. Sometimes even that doesn’t work and then we have to just sit them in their parents lap. We try any combination of things to make it as pleasant an experience as possible. Even if none of these things work, our stylists surprise everyone and get the job done as well as if the child had sat patiently. It’s quite the show.
WHAT ARE YOUR PRICES?
Haircuts are $17. Women’s Haircuts are $20. Bang cuts are $8. Wash and Blower is $25. Haircut, Wash and Blower combo starts at $35, and may increase depending on hair length. Highlights and/or coloring are offered by appointment only and start at $70. Visitors should ask about our rewards program. We also offer 25% off for recommending a new customer. Lil’ Jungle is located at 13985 S. Dixie Highway. Contact them at 305.238.1017 or visit facebook.com/Liljungle. Store hours are Monday: 12-6pm, Tuesday – Saturday: 10am-7pm, and Sunday: 11-5pm.

How to Cope With the Loss of a Pet BY TAMI MAIER
T
LOVING PET CARE IN YOUR HOME OR MINE
HIS MONTH HAS BEEN VERY EMOTIONAL FOR ME AS A PET SITTER. I HAVE become so close to the pets I watch that they truly become like family to me. Over Thanksgiving I lost two dogs from two different families. One died to cancer and the other to a brain tumor, both were only 6 years old. This has caused me to be up at night thinking about how you really cope with the loss of a dog? What advice could I give to the grieving owners? Anyone who considers a pet a beloved friend, companion, or family member knows the intense pain that accompanies the loss of that furry friend. So this month my article is dedicated first to the owners of Cooper and Coconut (two amazing dogs) and then to anyone else that has experienced the grief and sadness associated with the loss of their pet. Heaven’s Doggy Door My best friend closed his eyes last night, As his head was in my hand, The doctors said he was in pain, And it was hard for him to stand. The thoughts that scurried through my head, As I cradled him in my arms. Were of his younger, puppy years, And Oh ... his many charms. Today, there was no gentle nudge With an intense “ I love you gaze” Only a heart that’s filled with tears Remembering our joy-filled days. But an Angel just appeared to me And he said, “You should cry no more, God also loves our canine friends, He’s installed a ‘doggy-door’!”
Specializing in dog walking, pet sitting, pet boarding and now offering a full line of all natural pet products.

Our goal at Live Pawsitively is to provide
I hope this poem helps provide comfort for those that have lost a pet, and I pray you understand that intense grief over the loss of a pet is normal and natural. Do not let anyone tell you that you are crazy to feel the way you do. Do not let others dictate your feelings, they are valid and maybe extremely painful. But remember, you are not alone, thousands of other pet owners have gone through the same feelings, and in time your heart will heal and when you are ready your heart may have room to allow another pet to be loved by you as well. If you would like more information about pet sitting or pet boarding please contact me at Tami@ livepawsitvely.com.

The Dog That Barked Too Much BY DR. MARTA SANCHEZ EMDEN
Y
OU DID YOUR HOMEWORK AND FINALLY ADOPTED THE dog of you dreams, the one that fits your personality and lifestyle, only to find out that your new friend is an “extreme” barker. The constant barking is driving you, your family, and your neighbors crazy. You have tried everything in your power to stop the noise but nothing works. Sound familiar? This is a common scenario that can lead many dog owners to get complaints from neighbors, get fined, or even abandon their dogs in shelters or the streets. Barking is how dogs express their necessities and enthusiasm, but barking excessively is not normal. It is a problem that needs to be addressed. In order to manage a problem barker it is important to understand what is triggering the behavior. There are many reasons why a dog may bark in excess. Genetics is an important factor influencing barking. Certain breeds are well known for their tendencies to bark more, such as the German Shepherds and the Miniature Schnauzer. Some dogs are highly territorial and may bark to protect their area. Aggressive dogs may bark to warn others that they will bite if provoked. It is common to see excessive barking due to boredom or separation anxiety, especially in dogs left alone all day while their owners are out working. Most of all, a dog will bark when they want something such as to go outside to relieve themselves, a cookie, a toy, or the owner’s attention. It is important to make sure that the excessive barking is not due to pain, hunger, or physical discomfort. In our attempt to correct the excessive barking, we often commit important mistakes that instead of helping solve the problem, will exacerbate it. Avoid yelling or punishing your dog as they will only learn to be scared of you. Avoid showering your dog with attention when they are barking such as picking them up or giving them a treat to distract them. This will teach your dog that good things happen when they bark. Do not give in to a demanding bark. If the excessive barking is to demand a cookie, a toy, or to be placed on the couch -among many other examples- ignore it. You are being trained by your dog to follow orders. Most importantly, avoid the use of shock collars regardless of the intensity of electric charge produced. It is not only cruel, but also does not address the underlying problem that is leading to excessive barking in the first place. There are certain basic steps that you should take to address the problem barker. The goal is to modify the unwanted behavior; to retrain your dog not to bark in excess. Ignore the dog when they engage in the behavior and only give your attention when it is calm and quiet as a reward. You can also use a cookie or a favorite toy as rewards. Teach your dog to follow a command such as “no” or “quiet” when spoken in a firm decisive way. Praise him or her when follows the command. The use of artificial pheromones is helpful in the retraining process. It can help distract your dog and break the barking cycle so you can get the dog’s attention for training. Collars that produce a citric-smelling aerosol when the dog barks is based on the same principle. These types of products should never be used by themselves but as part of a behavior modification training plan. They are readily available in pet stores and the internet. Finally, daily exercise can prevent excessive barking. In some more challenging cases, you may need the assistance of a professional. A Veterinarian Board Certified in Behavior is the professional best suited for this task. With patience, determination, and a good behavior modification plan your dog can become your dream dog. Excessive barking represents a problem and it has a solution. Dr Marta Sanchez-Emden is the founder of the Animal Health and Rehab Center in South Miami. Cruising the Florida Keys & Bahamas with Cruzan Yacht Charters
D
O YOU LOVE BOATING, BUT DON’T HAVE THE time or patience to own your own boat? Are you looking for a new way to travel with family or friends? Cruzan Yacht Charters is the right fit for you. Established in 1980, Cruzan Yacht Charters is your local go-to company for sailing, snorkeling, fishing or cruising on one of their luxury yachts. There is great diversity with yachts of different sizes, accommodations and price ranges. Yachts that specialize in the Bahamas or the Caribbean, or yachts whose crew are well-versed in the secrets of the Mediterranean ports. No matter where they go, their experienced crew know where to drop anchor, allowing you to experience the world in a different and special way. Visit the Florida Keys, the Bahamas, the Caribbean, New England or the Mediterranean on your own private yacht. There is something about a private yacht vacation, no matter how luxurious the interior or fine the linens on the beds, slip out of your shoes and step onto the warm teak decks and you can instantly relax. You can be minutes away from civilization, hear the echoes of life on shore, and yet feel as if you have left all your earthly worries behind. Nothing else quite says vacation like lifting the anchor and watching a trail of white water as the yacht heads for the next anchorage. Discovering a secluded
harbor as the yacht rounds a cliff is so much more special than landing at an airport miles away from town. Everyone’s idea of perfection is different. Cruzan Yacht Charters lets you design a vacation that matches your personal dreams. Looking for a day trip for someone special or family and friends? Book a fishing excursion to the Florida Keys to catch a Sailfish. Have you always wanted to go sailing but don’t know how? Cruzan Yacht Charters can take you sailing and “show you the ropes.” Want to go to the best dive spots or reefs to check out the sea life with a trained professional? ES, MY MIAMI FRIENDS, THERE IS A PLACE OTHER THAN OUR BELOVED Bahamas to explore this summer, and that place is the Turks and Caicos. Situated on the island of Providenciales is the Ocean Club Resorts. Its two properties, Ocean Club and Ocean Club West are right on the beautiful Grace Bay Beach. Their motto is, “Stay at One, Play at Both.” And boy did I play…and relax. As I opened the door to my condo, the breeze from the fans mixed with the ocean air eased the Miami tension from my body. The sliding glass doors that spanned the length of the family room and bedroom were opened wide to a screened in porch that led straight onto the beach. No time to unpack as their famous pink umbrellas beckoned me outside where my feet slipped into sand that can only be described as silk. After a leisurely stroll down the beach, I decided to explore the resort. A quick shuttle ride or a fifteen-minute walk along the water’s edge connects both properties. The accommodations are studio–three bedroom condos decorated with a seaside décor and a private balcony or patio. There are three pools between the resorts and poolside BBQs that guests can use at any time. One pool even has bridges you can swim under! Tennis courts, fitness centers and three award-winning restaurants round out the Ocean Club Resort experience. The Cabana Bar and Grill, Seaside Café and Opus with its tree lit garden lounge and largest wine cellar on the island offer up fresh fish, island spices and of course…conch. I quickly came to the sad conclusion that there was more to do here than I had time for, so I did what anyone would do in my position, I grabbed a frozen drink, sat on the beach and plotted out my next move. I made my way over to Big Blue and went for a kayaking tour amongst the mangroves while my guide gave me a quick lesson on the history of the area. Having worked up an appetite and thirst, da Conch Shack, an open air, landmark restaurant was where I headed. I took a seat at one of the pastel colored tables that dotted the beach, ordered some conch fritters, Jan’s Infamous Rum Punch (CJ, my waiter, warned me, “It’s a creeper”) and lost myself in the crystal clear turquoise water. The next couple of days I experienced island life at its best. Something not to be missed is riding with Provo Ponies, because this is a far cry from your typical trail ride. I cantered on the beach and even rode my horse into the water for us both to cool off. What an amazing feeling! I did a sunset sail onboard the Atabeyra, a 77’ rigged trading schooner. With my feet dangling over the side and the coolness of the setting sun, I welcomed the end to a simply beautiful day. My last day in paradise was spent just doing nothing. Don’t get me wrong, I had options: scuba diving, snorkeling, golf, parasailing, paddle boarding or fishing, but I picked up my book and ensconced myself in a lounge chair under a pink umbrella. The sound of the waves lulled me to sleep until I awoke with a start. Had I missed my massage appointment? Luckily, I was on time to SpaTropique and that is where I met Demas, my masseur. Let’s just say I left wondering if I had time to get another one before leaving the island. Well, it happened, my departure day had arrived. I walked outside and onto the silky sand, looked out over the water and said those famous words, “I’ll be back.” (accent included) Debbie Martinez is a Miami Dade resident and Travel Editor for The Florida Villager. BOATING TIPS
The Importance of Using Authorized Service Centers BY ERIC RAISTRICK, OWNER OF ERIC’S OUTBOARD
H
AVING A RELIABLE BOAT AND engine is important to all owners. Customer satisfaction and reliability of your major investment can be attained by using an authorized service center. The following categories are areas where service centers are invaluable: engine service and repair, boat hull repair and painting, electronics and rigging. Eric’s Outboard Marine Service, a Yamaha Five Star Gold dealer, meets these needs or can direct you to the right company. Authorized dealers keep on hand the most up to date inventory of parts, certified technicians, and can warranty their work. Our Yamaha technicians are Certified Master Technicians, having attained this status by completing a comprehensive course load and continuing their education on a regular schedule. One Master Technician works exclusively in our shop; the other Master Technician services engines at marinas and at customer’s homes. Since Master Technicians have many years experience and extensive, ongoing training, they can usually identify and repair difficult problems the first time. This saves money by avoiding unnecessary trial and error repairs by less qualified technicians. Authorized service centers receive periodic technical bulletins from the engine manufacturer, enabling them to perform warranty repairs that independent shops may not even be aware of. Because an authorized dealer gets paid directly from the manufacturer for warranty repairs, his technicians are always on the lookout to affect these
repairs, even without the customer’s prior knowledge. If an independent technician identifies a warranty issue, he would have to advise his customer to take his boat to an authorized shop. Your service manager is an important component as they help you diagnose some of your issues before arranging an appointment. The training includes a combination of technical course work for technicians, service management courses for service managers, and business management for dealer principals or store managers. Dealers who sell Yamaha marine products exclusively and demonstrate the highest level of commitment to training can earn Five Star Gold, the top dealership certification level available. In choosing a Five Star Gold dealership, you can be confident that you will be able to find Yamaha products on their shelves and receive a high level of service from the point of sale and after. Other departments at this dealership include rigging installation, engine sales, electronics installation including Simrad, Garmin and Seastar Steering’s all new Optimus 360 systems. We would like to reiterate our emphasis on using authorized service technicians and service centers. The best care possible will extend the “life” of your equipment. Eric Raistrick opened Eric’s Outboard in 1986 as a mobile outboard marine mechanic. He became a Yamaha dealer in 1996. Eric’s Outboard is now Full Line Yamaha dealer, servicing only Yamaha outboards. Eric’s Outboard is proud to have the only two Yamaha Master Marine Technicians in Miami on their staff. Please contact us at 305-251-4067, ericsoutboard.com or visit us at 8755 SW 129th Street.

Children participated in a magical event full of activities, face painting, special treats and surprises by the mysterious creators and red amazon warriors from Cirque du Soleil. SECOND ANNUAL GLOBAL DAY OF JOY
MIAMI CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL HOSTS ‘DAY IN THE LIFE OF A NURSE’ PROGRAM
Team Hasbro volunteers came together with Miami Children’s Health Foundation (MCH Foundation) to visit patients at Miami Children’s Hospital on Thursday, Dec. 4, for the Company’s second annual Global Day of Joy. During the visit, there was a special appearance by Mr. Potato Head and TRANSFORMERS Optimus Prime and Bumblebee.
A group of South Florida middle and high school students spent a day at Miami Children’s Hospital (MCH) shadowing pediatric nurses. Part of Day in the Life of a Nurse™, the program provides students a glimpse at some of the many career options in the nursing profession and motivates them to prepare to pursue nursing careers. Day in the Life of a Nurse™ has been coordinated for fifteen years by the Nursing Consortium of South Florida, a non-profit membership association supported by most of the regions hospitals and nursing schools among others.
A few patients began the day woken up by Mr. Potato Head who also treated them to a toy. Other activities throughout the day included ‘Game Day’ stations where patients got to play with the pros as members of Team Hasbro brought in hundreds of games and toys, while other patients painted a mural to give back to Hasbro and also thanked their nurses with cupcakes.

Over 200 people were in attendance, and approximately $10,000 was raised for the charity.
READY TO LEAD COLLEGE READINESS WORKSHOP
Miami Dade College hosted this program for the seventh consecutive year on Saturday, Decenber 6. The intensive one-day program helped Hispanic high-school students entering postsecondary education by motivating them to complete high school, empowering them to serve and lead in their communities, and instilling a belief that a college education is achievable. The students were trained in college planning, financing a college education, and leadership development.
The Reach For The Stars Foundation originated in 1998 after the untimely death of Alan Epstein, who tragically died in a car accident at the age of 18. Through the Miami Foundation, Alan's family started the Reach For The Stars Scholarship Fund to honor Alan's memory, which provides financial aid to deserving high school seniors to further their education. RFTSF has since grown to not only raise funds for the scholarship fund, but also supports various cancer foundations in memory of Alan's parents, Murray and Cheryl Epstein. For more information about the foundation, please visit www.RFTSF.org.
ART WITH A HEART
The “Art with a Heart” Club, founded by Westminster Christian School (WCS) sophomore Ashley Castano, performed their first service project on November 1. The group visited Miami Children’s Hospital and worked on Thanksgiving art projects with the children. It was a great way to brighten their days, while sharing their passion for art with others. Their next service event will be in December, and every month there after. The Westminster Christian School community rallied around sophomore Sophia Gonzalez as she worked to raise awareness and funds for the Arthritis Foundation as the Youth Honoree for the 2014 Walk to Cure Arthritis. A Westminster student since preschool, her classmates and teachers organized six teams to help support her fundraising efforts. In the end, they were able to raise $34,000 in direct donations and in-kind support. Sophia has suffered from Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis since she was two years old. Sophomore Sophia Gonzalez (second from left, front row), Arthritis Foundation Youth Honoree, is surrounded by just a few of the friends and family who came out to support her cause to raise awareness for Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis at the 2014 Walk to Cure Arthritis.
