HEROS AMONG US

The Village has released an online Spring 2015 schedule for the People Mover. Free to the public, buses feature separate routes for middle and high schools along with multiple afternoon routes to accommodate after-school activites.

Pinecrest parks have added state-ofthe-art lighting prediction technology, which sounds a horn (and flashes an amber strobe) when there is a 97 percent change that a lightning strike will occur within two miles. The horn gives visitors an 8-to-20 minute warning.

The Village and Miami-Dade County School Board have recieved a federal grant to implement Phase 1 of the “Safe Routes to School” program, providing for infrastructure improvements around Palmetto and Pinecrest Elementary schools, including updating all traffic signs to new standards, electronic speed limit signs, solar-powered pedestrian crossing flashers, and pedestrian crossing countdown signals.

Pinecrest has launched an iPhone and Android-friendly MyPinecrest app. The app allows residents to file a service request, track the People Mover, watch Village Counsel meetings and view inspection updates among others.

Pinecrest Police’s Sergeant Michael Gorsline and Officer Rafael Ferrer were awarded Officer of the Quarter awards for the last quarter of 2014 for outstanding achievement and distinguished service after reviving an unresponsive woman last November using an Automated External Defibrillator.

On January 20, the Village granted a request from FPL to create a substation on the northwest corner of their 84-acre property on 152nd street. The property has been garnering attention as a prime spot for a new fire station to cover the northeast and southeast parts of the Village.

Palmetto Middle School Principal John Lux has left the school to become Principal at Miami Sunset Senior High. He joined Palmetto Middle in July 2010. No replacement had been announced at presstime.

25 royal palms have been relocated from the east side of Franjo Road between east Hibiscus street and northbound Dixie Highway as part of a joint plan with FPL and Miami-Dade County to remedy the threat of service interruption due to the trees’ location under County power lines.

South Miami Police Detective Lisa King was awarded the department’s 2014 “Officer of the Year” honor on February 3. Det. King’s skills have led to the recovery of more than $100,000 in property.

South Miami favorite Buns & Buns will compete for the title of “Best New Restaurant” on the March 4 episode of Bravo’s new show of the same name.

Local legend Miami’s Best Pizza has extended its lease through March 2015. The Coral Gables staple is currently searching for a new home after its current lease was not renewed.

The city is planning to install a crosswalk to Ingraham Park from Riviera Drive as well as pedestrian crossings around Cartagena Circle. The City will add landscaping, trees, lighting and irrigation to the circle, which connects LeJeune, Cocoplum and Old Cutler roads and Sunset Drive.

The famed Miracle Theater got an exterior makeover last month thanks to new windows and doors, waterproofing, fresh paint and more. The theater, built in 1947, had its marquee restored two years ago.

A 32-unit luxury condo building named Biltmore Parc will break ground this summer on Valencia Avenue, within walking distance to Miracle Mile.

West Kendall Baptist Health has recieved reconition from the American College of Radiology as a “Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence.” They are the first in South Florida to recieve the designation.

Cultural Takes Center Stage in Coral Gables BY JORGE CARUSO

I

T‘S THE FIRST FRIDAY NIGHT OF THE MONTH, AND CORAL Gables’ vibrant cultural scene is in full swing. A crowd has gathered for the opening of a new exhibition at the Coral Gables Museum. Next door, in the courtyard of Books & Books, musicians are trading riffs, while inside, an author is reading from a new work. A new independent film is screening at the Coral Gables Cinema across the street, and down the block on Miracle Mile, Actors’ Playhouse is staging the performance of an award-winning play. Soon, the Gallery Night trolley will make a stop to shuttle art lovers to a dozen galleries open on this night. “Coral Gables has become a leading venue for arts and culture in South Florida,” said Mayor Jim Cason. “Culture is an integral part of our City, which has become a showcase for the arts not just on gallery night but every day, year round.” While Gallery Night draws large crowds every first Friday night of the month, “Jazz in the Gables” has become a leading daytime venue for live music, drawing enthusiastic audiences during the free lunchtime concerts every Wednesday through April 1. There are seven concerts left in its fifth season, including two special Sunday concerts on March 15 and March 29 at 4 p.m. All concerts are held at the Museum Plaza on Salzedo Street two blocks north of Miracle Mile. Wednesday concerts start at 12:15 p.m. In March, the Coral Gables Art Cinema, which has become one of the most important independent film venues in Florida since it opened in October 2010, will be a venue for the Miami International Film Festival. From March 6 to 12, staring in the early after-

noon and running until late at night, audiences will be treated to an eclectic mix of documentaries and narratives from around the world. The nights of culture don’t end with the closing titles. Theater patrons can cross the street and view the Third Annual ARTcycle, which runs at the Coral Gables Museum from March 6 through May 24. The exhibit, accompanied by public art installations at six locations across the city, showcases wildly imaginative sculptures fashioned from recycled bicycle parts that help build awareness of the importance of bicycle safety. The Museum, which occupies the National Landmark building that once served as the City’s Police and Fire stations, has become a cultural anchor, along with the adjacent gallery building constructed by the City and opened in 2010. The renovated museum and new gallery host exhibits that showcase City planning, architecture, civic art, environmental protection and historic preservation. “Our mission is to teach, so we’re trying to educate people (about) the ideals that created Coral Gables,” said historian Arva Moore Parks, who chairs the museum Board of Directors. Lovers of the written word don’t have far to go when they leave the Museum. Located next door, Books & Books has become a national hub for the literary arts, presenting more than 500 different events over the course of a year that showcase both local talent and literary icons. “There’s probably not a living writer from the last half century that we haven’t had at Books & Books,” said owner Mitch Kaplan, who won the 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award from the prestigious National Book Foundation.

PHS Students Turn Hoops into Hope BY ANDREA CARNIERO

T

WO CAUSES CAME TOGETHER FOR ONE DAY OF fun, fans and hope as the 8th annual Miracle Games welcomed “3’s for Z” into their fold on Saturday, February 21st at Palmetto Senior High. Spearheaded by Palmetto students Matt Hellinger, Jonathan Roth and Jayden Hardaway, the Miracle Games 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament benefits the Transplant Foundation, a nonprofit organization which provides assistance for transplant patients and their families as well as educates the public on organ and tissue donation and funds transplant research. “The Miracle Games had been run for five years by a group of high school students, and when they Palmetto students Jayden Hardaway, Matt Hellinger, & Jonathan Roth. graduated, Matthew, Jayden and I took it over,” said Roth. “We joined forces with ‘3’s for Z’ this year when we met Zander’s mom, Kimberly Standiford, and immediately got along and found that we shared a passion for helping others.” Standiford is the mother of Alexander “Zander” Standiford, a Palmetto Senior High School alumni who tragically passed away in 2009 during his freshman year Alexander “Zander” Standiford

of college. She had established the “3’s for Z” three-point contest in Zander’s memory, paying tribute to his love of basketball and reputation as a go-to three-point shooter on the PHS basketball team. The two causes have deep roots in the Pinecrest and Palmetto Bay communities, allowing for a broad reach and dedication of time and efforts by students and parents alike. “This year’s turnout was our best ever,” said Roth, who counted 20 teams for the 3-on-3 tournament and many more participants in the 3’s for Z competition. “In addition to the players, tons of community members stopped by to observe and contribute to our success. We had players from all over, many from Palmetto but also other schools, and some parents even participated in 3’s for Z!” Though the aim is to raise funds for the Transplant Foundation, Roth says the gains for him and his two co-chairs reach deeper than just monetary. “Students of all ages should participate in community and charitable events not only because it is the right thing to do, but also because it can spread a truly positive effect throughout the community,” he said. “There is no better feeling than realizing that you were able to make a positive impact on the lives of others.” Winners of the 3 on 3 games and 3 point contest.

Palmetto Elementary School Kicks Off New Watch D.O.G.S. Program BY JANET HODUR

O

N JANUARY 23, PALMETTO ELEMENTARY School welcomed dads, grandfathers, uncles and other father figures to school to introduce a new program called WATCH D.O.G.S (Dads Of Great Students). Over breakfast, students, dads, and other guests participated in several hands-on activities to promote the importance of fathers in the students’ lives, and show the bond between child and father. Though Palmetto Elementary received about 100 replies to the event, more than 120 dads turned out with more than 170 students. After a presentation that explained the program, volunteers were invited to sign up for a day to be at the school. More than half of the attendees registered and selected a day on the spot, with additional slots being filled Jeanny (dad), Victoria, and Alexander Collazo. in the days that followed. “Palmetto Elementary has been looking for a long time for a program like Watch D.O.G.S. to bring more male role models into the school,” said PES Principal Eric Torres. “The number of dads and others who came shows just how much excitement there is around this idea. We were simply overwhelmed by the turnout, and can’t wait to see what these volunteers have to offer our students.” WATCH D.O.G.S. began in 1998 at a school in Springdale, Arkansas and has since grown into a national program bringing hundreds of thousands of fathers and father figures into classrooms and hallways across the country, creating millions of hours of

“in-school” volunteer time. The program, which today is in more than 4,500 schools in 46 states, has a tremendously positive impact on the educational process. The Watch D.O.G.S. model asks dads to volunteer at least one day over school year. So far, Palmetto Elementary has had a number of dads volunteer for their one day – and then sign up for more. A day in the life of a Watch D.O.G.S volunteer might involve monitoring the school entrance, assisting with carpool in the morning and at dismissal, monitoring the lunch room, or helping in their child’s classroom. Volunteers might work with groups at P.E., shelve books in the Media Center, or work with small groups of students on math facts or spelling words in classrooms under a Julius and Gabriella Marrero. teacher’s guidance. Palmetto Elementary Dad Julius Marrero helped PES launch the program and serves as the school’s “Top Dog,” after volunteering with Watch D.O.G.S. at his daughter’s school in San Antonio, Texas, before the family moved to Miami. “We have smiles all around when a Watch DOG dad is helping at school,” said Palmetto Elementary Counselor Julie Astuto. “The Watch DOG is showered with love from the kids and he gets to see what the school day really looks like and feels like for his child. The students enjoy the extra attention and help that a Watch DOG provides. And, an extra set of eyes and ears helps to make our campus safer as well. Everybody wins!”

Pinecrest Students Embody Entrepreneurial Spirit BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

F

OR SOPHIE SYMES, GABI BRAYER AND SABRINA Ortega, lunchtime seemed like a prime opportunity to do more than just eat lunch. The three friends, all fourth graders at Pinecrest Elementary, decided to channel their collective energy into a new venture that allowed them to give back and, unknowingly, sparked an entrepreneurial nerve among their fellow students and principal. The concept was simple. “We decided we wanted to help homeless pets find homes, and to get donations of bedding, cleaning supplies, leashes, collars and toys,” said Symes. In order to do so, the three went directly to Pinecrest Principal Marisol Diaz to gain her blessing in collecting donations on school grounds. She wholeheartedly embraced the idea. “I really applauded them for their creativity,” said Diaz. Impressed with their tenacity, and excited by the idea of young entrepreneurs in her school, Diaz decided to launch YEP—or Young Entrepreneurs of Pinecrest. The program (of which Symes, Brayer and Ortega are the designated “pioneers,”) will challenge fourth and fifth grade students to apply with a business plan, of which Diaz will pick one to mentor throughout the year. “I want to help them take a project from beginning to end,” she said. The three pioneers are already working with her to do just that. Over the past three months, they’ve held weekly meetings with Diaz, where they discuss everything from gaining their parent’s commitment, to speaking with shelters and pet stores as research and designing flyers to spur donations in their class. Along the way the team has worked through challenges such as expanding their donation base, spreading their message via multiple communication methods and practicing their public speaking. “I’ve really put the ownership on them,” said Diaz. Another person bitten by the entrepreneurial bug was Pinecrest fourth grade teacher Sabrina Abislaiman. After her students wrote tribute essays to the inventors of everyday items as part of their social studies course, Abislaiman decided to hosted a open forum inspired by the ABC show “Shark Tank,” where businesses present their growth plans in the hopes of landing financial and advisory help, with her students. “The kids had such a great time learning about how these inventions were developed that I decided to take it a step further and have them use their problem-solving and creative-thinking skills to invent a new product or make improvements to an existing product,” she said. “I first polled my class to find out if they were familiar with the show ‘Shark Tank’ and after receiving an overwhelming response of interest in the show decided to dive right into the project.” Abislaiman’s “sharks?” Parents from her class. “The parents and the students not only loved the entire experience, but have also begged for us to do it again,” said Abislaiman. Thanks in part to shows such as “Shark Tank,” entrepreneurship has become a hot topic with students, lead24

ing to the creation of programs such as Diaz’s YEP and the recently launched AlligatorZone, which held a January event in cooperation with the Pinecrest library. Launched in June 2014, AlligatorZone (“Where kids meet cool startups.”) gives entrepreneurs a chance to introduce their startups to kids, teens and their families and gain feedback while inspiring the next generation of out-of-the-box thinkers. The January events saw two local startups meet with about 20 participants. Their next event is planned for April. For Symes, Brayer and Ortega though, their pet-friendly initiative is already reaping rewards. “The most exciting part so far was seeing the shelter and taking our donations to them,” said Symes. “It was great finding out other things we can do to help them help the animals. STUDENT CORNER

Parks-The Gems of Palmetto Bay BY JULIA ROTHFIELD

I

F YOU’RE EVER LOOKING FOR SOMETHING TO DO ON a free afternoon, the five parks of Palmetto Bay are the places to be. Each park’s uniqueness means there is something for everyone… and I mean everyone. Whether you’re a history buff looking for some South Floridian historical education or a music lover who would love to see some local concerts, making these parks a part of your routine is a must, as they have so much to offer. Coral Reef Park is one of the most well-known parks, a paradise for all who seek Miami sunshine. Filled with grassy fields, softball/baseball diamonds, a bike path, beach volleyball courts, and a huge playground, it is an ideal way to choose outside over in. Exercising, playing with kids or relaxing in the shade is easy at Coral Reef park (especially with the Tai Chi, yoga, and Zumba classes offered). The softball complex, basketball courts, and skate park at Palmetto Bay Park make it a home for many local athletes, as well as a source of constant entertainment for sports fans. Another great feature to check out is the shady walking path, which is bordered by exercise equipment with activities for all levels of athlete (which Coral Reef has as well). With a public library, pavilion, and band shell, Ludovici Park is a park all its own, often the site of events like Holiday by the Bay, Love is in the Park, and local concerts. It’s a great

place for community and family as well as a way to unwind with a good book. Remember to take a walk near the most famous resident: an alligator who lives in the nearby pond (behind a fence, of course!). Thalatta Estate is an historic house and grounds which has been preserved by Palmetto Bay and is monument to the rich cultural history of South Florida and its natural beauty. Located right on the edge of Biscayne Bay and ringed by mangroves, it is a gorgeous spot for watching wildlife and plays a part as a venue for weddings and sustainable community initiatives. When looking for just the right place to spend time with best friends, look no further than Perrine Wayside Dog Park. Benches shaded by magnificent trees and a central lake for all your splashing needs complete this beautiful, sheltered play space, which includes a convenient dog wash station and dog/ human water fountains. All of these parks are free to enter; addresses and phone numbers can be found on the parks calendar at www.palmettobay-fl.gov. Each park is very special and makes up part of the fabric of our community, offering incredible opportunities. Julia Rothfield is a junior at Coral Reef Senior High School in the International Baccalaureate academy. She is a part of Girl Scout Troop #75 and is currently completing her Gold Award project.

10 Things to Know About Mathnasium BY ANDREA CARNIERO

A

FTER 20 YEARS IN CORPORATE FINANCE AND BANKING, MATHNASIUM of Palmetto Bay owners (they also own the franchise in Coral Gables), and husband and wife team, Jonathan and Laura Hamel decided to make a change. “With three young sons, we also wanted to create a business in which we could grow and work together as a family,” said Jonathan. “We discovered Mathnasium’s approach and curriculum and realized it would serve a pressing need in our community in an effective and unique way.” More than a year later the duo is bringing their knowledge, experience and passion for math to the students of South Florida. Here are ten things to know about this unique business.

1 2 3 4 30

IT’S NOT ALWAYS ABOUT CATCHING UP.

The Hamels say about one-third of the students who come to the center are actually working above their grade level and looking for further enrichment. Parents, too, they say, are focused on giving their children every opportunity to excel. “Sharpening mathematical thinking skills builds a strong scaffolding that allows students to approach new concepts with confidence,” said Jonathan. “Students join Mathnasium to get ahead and stay ahead.”

THEY THINK LONG TERM.

5 6

For the team at Mathnasium it’s not just about passing Friday’s test or surviving tonight’s homework, it’s about building a solid foundation. “We want students to develop and retain the critical mathematical skills that will serve them not only this year, but next year, on the SATs, in college, and throughout life.”

THEY DON’T JUST TEACH MATH, THEY INSPIRE CONFIDENCE.

For the Hamels, it’s not enough to just become proficient at a specific skill. They say one of the greatest hurdles to overcome with math students is a basic belief in themselves and their knowledge. Says Laura, “Our goal is not for students to be ‘competent’ or ‘proficient,’ we want students to master each skill and concept. With mastery comes confidence.”

7

SOMETIMES IT’S KNOWING WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW.

Since math is so sequential, a weak foundation will make math a struggle for years to come. In other words, mastering key prerequisite skills provides a solid foundation on which to layer on more challenging concepts. “Moving on to higher levels of math can become much more frustrating when students don’t retain and bring with them the key foundational skills needed to advance,” said Jonathan.

THE WORK IS REWARDING ON BOTH SIDES.

The Hamels admit that some students come to them “pretty beaten up,” by years of math frustration, but say there’s no such thing as too late. “Sometimes we need to go back and re-build two or three years of math skills, which takes time and a lot of hard work,” said Laura. “These students can be the most rewarding, though, as it is so satisfying to them to have math explained in a way that makes sense – maybe for the first time ever!”

MATH CAN BE FUN (THEY SWEAR!).

Building a team that can not only make math understandable, but also enjoyable is high priorty for the Hamels. Because the center is focused solely on math, their instructors are well-practiced in breaking down complex concepts and inspring their students to want to come back each week, an important part of the process for kids at any level.

8 9 10

THEY’RE FLEXIBLE.

A monthly membership to Mathnasium is similar to joining a gym - you don’t schedule your visits. Instead, said Jonathan, members drop in any time during Instruction hours. “We know how busy families are - so our students drop in whenever it’s convenient for them.”

THEY FEEL YOUR HOMEWORK PAIN.

The Mathnasium team also offers homework help and standardized test prep. “We can set aside part of each session for homework help or to review classwork - anything to support students with what they are currently learning in the classroom,” said Jonathan.

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER.

Mathnasium offers interactive quizzes and curriculum samples for 1st grade through Pre-Calculus on their website, allowing parents to see exactly where their child excels and where they may need a little extra support. “We’re happy to schedule a complimentary in-depth verbal and written math assessment,” said Laura. “It’s a valuable tool to know where to focus with your child to make sure they’re on track.”

THEY UNDERSTAND THAT EACH CHILD IS UNIQUE.

“We start with a comprehensive assessment to pinpoint each student’s specific strengths and weaknesses,” says Laura, who then creates a tailored Learning Plan to both fill in specific gaps and strengthen their overall math foundation and mathematical thinking. www.thefloridavillager.com | March 2015

Pinecrest is a leader among municipalities in climate action initiatives. To encourage residents to reduce their carbon footprint, the Village offers incentives to those who take steps toward sustainable building. The Building and Planning Department provides expedited plan review and a 25 percent reduction in permit and plan review fees to residents who build green. In addition, the Village Council presents the homeowners with a framed proclamation for their efforts. An excellent example of a sustainable building

project is the Harper Residence, also known as Domus Alba. The home is owned by David and Jennifer Harper and was designed by David, an awardwinning architect. The house obtained LEED GOLD Certification from the United States Green Building Council and was awarded the Most Outstanding LEED for Homes/Single Family Project of the Year in South Florida. Every part of the 7,000 square foot home is used to limit wasted space. The home was built with mostly renewable and recycled materials, climate zones and solar panel technology. The home boasts near-net zero energy consumption, proving it is possible to live a luxurious lifestyle in a large house that produces a small carbon footprint. The Wallet Card: Helping People with ASD Communicate With Police

T

HE CORAL GABLES POLICE DEPARTMENT recently introduced The Wallet Card, a one-of-a-kind partnership between the Disability Independence Group (DIG), the University of Miami/Nova Southeastern University Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (UM-NSU CARD), and our Police Department. This card is a free tool for teenagers and adults who have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and is designed to help them communicate clearly with law enforcement Coral Gables Interim and first responders. Police Chief Ed Hudak The uniqueness of the Wallet Card is that each card is individualized for the owner of the card and the specific issues that they would like the police or a first responder to know about them. In stressful situations, it is common that people with autism have difficulty communicating. This card will bring clarity of understanding between law enforcement and persons with disabilities. The Wallet Card also has a Biodot that can indicate the stress level the person with ASD is experiencing. You’ll be proud to know that this program is set to help thousands of families affected by ASD. From the professional law enforcement perspective, our agency is taking the lead in this initiative and we are happy to share this knowledge with other police jurisdictions as well as the autism community throughout the world. Since annoucing The Wallet Card in late January, the Coral Gables Police Department has been contacted by other law enforcement agencies throughout the country and by organizations as far away as Australia. If you know of somebody with ASD that would like to take advantage of this free

tool, please visit our Police Department web page at www.coragables.com or visit the Disability Independence Group website at www.justdigit.org. There, you will find an informative video about when and how to use the wallet card, showing three different scenarios in which the card brings clarity to interactions between people with ASD and law enforcement. All the actors in this video are living with ASD and all of the police in the video are actual Coral Gables Police officers. It is narrated by Lt. Bart Barta, who devotedly represented our department in this noble effort, and Haley Moss, a young woman with ASD. Through proper identification and education, our Coral Gables Police officers can better address real life interactions with persons with disabilities to avoid misunderstandings. This is just another example of the Coral Gables Police Department’s commitment to “serve and protect” the Coral Gables community, which is made possible thanks to this unique partnership. CGPD is also asking drivers to remove items from the center consoles and glove compartments of their vehicles that may contain personal information such as address, vehicle insurance or vehicle registration. This is the first place thieves look not only for valuables, but to access residences and steal personal identity. In case of any suspicious activity anywhere, any time, the Coral Gables Police Department wants to know: call 305-442-1600. Help us fight crime and make Coral Gables a safer city.

HE ALTH Y LIV ING

Where the Rubber Meets the Road BY SAM LEVINE, OWNER, BIKRAM YOGA FALLS

Y

OUR DAILY ROUTINE BEGINS… YOU GATHER YOUR THINGS together, throw on some shoes, and you’re off to conquer the world. All day long, your body is moving in relationship to your shoes. This is apparent in numerous activities: jogging, lifting weights, cycling, going to and from the printer, walking around the office, going to the store, etc. Whether you’re wearing flats, sneakers or heels, they’re all forcing the body to adapt to the shoe. Once your body loses its structural integrity, the pain appears. There are 26 bones, 33 joints and more than 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments throughout the foot and ankle. Every structure is built with a solid foundation. You can do sit-ups all day long to strengthen your core, but that’s miles away from the beginning of the body. It is very common that the spot where the pain occurs is not the criminal, it is the victim. Pain in your knees can generate from the hips, lower back pain can generate from the feet, and so on. “The thighbone’s connected to the knee bone and the knee bone’s connected to the…” you know the rest.

In Bikram Yoga, we spend the first hour of class standing, exercising with bare feet. It is a bottom up approach. In the beginning, your feet may ache a little, as they are working through any atrophy that has occurred from years of misuse. Your ankles may hobble and you might huff and puff to stabilize yourself, but the body is designed to adapt. Little by little, the body begins to realign from the ground up. Back pain, knee pain, shoulder and neck tension are known to completely vanish. Many Bikram postures focus on equal distribution on the feet, in some postures we lean back to bring weight into the heels, and in other postures we stand all the way on the toes. Once you give the body an honest true foundation, it begins to adapt and realign. Even if you can’t make it into a yoga class, kick off your shoes and walk around the house barefoot. Go to the park and walk along the paths with no shoes. Always be aware and careful of things on the ground, but eventually the feet will toughen up (they even make special barefoot shoes to protect your feet). Go take a drive to Key Biscayne and walk or jog in the soft sand. It does take time for the feet to develop, but patience, persistence, and routine maintenance are key.

AMUEL JOHNSON ONCE SAID “THE NEXT BEST THING TO knowing something, is knowing who to ask.” With more than two decades of experience in the beauty industry, I’ve learned a trick or two and am very grateful to share my knowledge. Drop me a line with your questions and let’s begin the journey!

Q: THE GIRLS IN MY OFFICE ARE ALL TALKING ABOUT THE NEW SHELLAC MANICURE, BUT I DON’T WANT TO DAMAGE MY NATURAL NAILS. IS IT REALLY SAFE? A: Yes, Shellac is absolutely safe. It is simply a long-lasting polish that delivers smudgeproof nail color that last for weeks without chipping. However, there are a few things to keep in mind. Shellac is not only a service but a brand. It is produced by only one company, Creative Nail Design. All major brands are jumping on the band wagon with versions of their own, but CND truly does stand heads above the rest for several reasons. First, Shellac does not require the use of drills or heavy fileing which can damage your nail bed. Second, Shellac polish is removed with a gentle solution. There is no need to soak in a vat of smelly acetone! So, what to expect? Shellac services are very similar to traditional manicures or pedicures, with the main difference being that each coat of special polish is cured under a UV light for several moments.

Q: OVER THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS MY HAIR HAS BECOME VERY THIN, IS THERE ANYTHING YOU CAN SUGGEST? A: First, please know that you are not alone in this challenge. Hair loss is as common

among women as it is men. The first step I’d advise is a trip to your doctor to discover if there are medical issues that need to be addressed. That aside, there are many styling options you can consider. For example, a few well placed hair extensions will do wonders. All hair extensions fall under three basic categories: heat-fused, cold-fused, or clip. My personal recommendation for first timers, would be cold-fusion. In this process small sections of hair are strategically applied to create natural fullness. The application can take as little as 30 minutes, causes no damage to your natural hair and last for an astounding six-to-eight weeks! The extensions are reusable, color friendly and surprisingly affordable. In a cold-fusion application small 1.5” wefts of hair are attached via extension “tape.” Unlike heat-fusion techniques, the application time is quite short. Next the extension will be trimmed to blend with your natural hair and styled as usual. Just remember, both the quality of hair and the expertise of the stylist are paramount. Does Low-Carb Really Equal Weight Loss? BY GABRIEL LAMAS, OWNER, FITNESS TOGETHER

T

HE CRAZE OF LOW-CARB DIETS IS NOT A NEW PHENOMenon, but one that entered the mainstream via the famous Atkins diet and has continued onward as a mainstay in many people’s weight loss diets as well as overall nutritional values. By that, I mean many people consider carbs to be “bad.” So, is that actually the truth? Can there actually be a bad macronutrient? Peer-reviewed studies have actually shown that when groups are compared and both consume a diet of a caloric deficit (i.e. they are eating less calories than they burn daily) but one group is specifically lower in carbohydrates, the low carb group loses more weight. In real world application, the availability of high-sugar, highly-processed, caloriedense carbohydrates are abundant - and that, indeed, causes a problem. While they may have the same amount of calories, 300 calories from a sticky bun and 300 calories from a sweet potato will have a different effect on the body; from spiking blood sugar levels in different ways, to causing different kinds of metabolic effect and different types of fat storage. But in general, should we consider carbs to be “bad” and an enemy to weight loss? The answer is no if we make the correct choices within the Quinoa Salad. category. Most sweets and calorie-dense foods tend to have a lot of carbs as sugar is a carb and that is often the number one ingredient in these categories of “junk food.” We need carbohydrates for our body to function and most importantly for weight loss. They fuel the killer workouts that you should be using to accelerate dropping pounds. Instead of avoiding carbs altogether in the Sweet Potatoes. name of weight loss, stick to complex, low-sugar carbohydrates such as oatmeal, sweet potatoes, brown rice or quinoa that will provide you sustained energy and the ability to push yourself in the gym. That will ultimately lead to a better, healthier, more enjoyable weight loss system. Passionate about the fitness business, Gabriel Lamas began owning franchised fitness studios at 23 years old. Originally from Massachusetts, Gabriel attended Florida International University and his fitness business holdings company, Gabriel Lamas Fitness LLC acquired the Fitness Together Miami brand his senior year of college. HE NATIONAL SPORTS SHOOTING FOUNDATION (NSSF) states that hunting and target shooting are among the safest of all sports. If you are part of the estimated 50 percent of American households with firearms, it is likely you already know some basic safety rules, but many do not. Here are a few tips to remember when handling a firearm. » Treat every firearm as if it were loaded. Don’t rely on the firearms “safeties,” as they are mechanical devices that are not designed to replace common sense. Never allow anyone to handle a firearm carelessly because they believe that the “safety” is on. »» Never point a firearm at anything you do not intend to shoot. Daily at our gun shop we take firearms from the shelf and hand them over the counter to persons new and experienced. We also demonstrate handling with blue plastic fake guns. Whether real or not, we would never point one at anybody. It is about safety, but it is also about respect. »» Keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you are ready to fire. Our students are trained to maintain their trigger fingers stretched against the firearm’s frame until the decision to squeeze the trigger is made. No modern firearm will shoot unless the trigger is squeezed. »» Know your target and what’s beyond It. Remember that once a shot is fired, it cannot be taken back. A .22 short bullet can travel more than one and one-quarter miles, and a .30-06 bullet, more than three miles. Shotgun pellets can travel 500 yards, and shotgun slugs have a range of more than half a mile according to the NSSF. Our students always learn to observe proper targeting and to never be casual about a bullet’s path and destination. »» Protect your eyes and ears. Use of eyewear and hearing protection is common sense, but you should own your personal gear instead of renting it. Our instructors use both earplugs and earmuffs to dampen the sound. Wrap-around eyewear should be chosen, or goggles should be fit over prescription glasses (although shooting ranges typically allow the latter). »» Use proper ammunition. When loading ammunition into your firearm, ensure that you compare the markings on the barrel or slide with the markings on the back of the bullet’s casing. Manufacturers will test and proof firearms according to specific calibers and pressures. For example, not all .38 Special revolvers can handle a .38 Special “+P” bullet, and not all 9mm are the same. Consult your preferred shop for the proper match between ammunition and firearm. »» Train yourself. A variety of training courses are available in South Florida. If you are new to firearms or need a refresher, opt for a basic handgun course. A complete course should cover safety, maintenance, malfunctions, ammunition and fundamentals of marksmanship. A Concealed Carry Course should also orient you to your rights and legal responsibilities as a firearms holder. There should always be some range time included in a firearms handling course. Intermediate and advance courses may progress through defensive, tactical, and competitive shooting. Although familiarization courses are also available for children, in general, they should remember four rules when encountering a firearm: 1) Stop! 2) Don’t touch! 3) Run! 4) Get an adult!. It is a fact that firearms form part of our American history and tradition. To exercise our right to keep and bear arms, we must take responsibility for our actions as gun owners. Basic safety rules are mandatory and necessary to continue to uphold the integrity of our sacred constitutional rights. Luis Ortega is a Certified Pistol Instructor and owns Security Arms International, a firearms shop in Palmetto Bay, Florida, where weekly courses are available to promote the safe and responsible use and ownership of firearms. IT’S THEIR BUSINES S

Solar Experts Bring Renewable Energy to South Florida Residents BY ANDREA CARNIERO

R

EDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE MAY BE A HOUSEhold term, but for most homeowners the idea of revamping their energy source can be daunting, difficult and disconcerting. Enter Brian Gillis. Gillis, the owner of South Florida’s Mr. Solar, has made it his mission to help home and business owners make sense of wind and solar energy by working closely with residents to evaluate their needs (and their property) and then help them implement the smartest choices in renewable energy. And with clients such as Pinecrest Mayor Cindy Lerner and high profile projects such as the largest residential solar installation in the U.S. (92.7 Kilowatts on Miami Beach’s Star Island) he’s certainly drawing interest. “We have three types of clients,” said Gillis, who bought the six-year-old company last year. “Some are looking to reduce or eliminate their electric bills, others are looking to make a positive impact on our environment and the rest are preparing for a disaster (manmade or natural).” Whatever the reason, Gillis and his team take a methodical approach to working with clients. They first look at a satellite image of the property to determine if solar will fit on the property’s roof or ground, then schedule a visit to evaluate the client’s electric usage and bills. “Our motto is ‘Reduce Before You Produce,’” said Gillis. “What this means

is do everything you can to reduce your electric bill before you install solar panels. An example of this is installing a Solar Water Heater. People don’t usually know that the water heater is on 24 hours a day. It is the second largest consumer of electricity in the home.” In fact, Gillis says installing a solar heater is one of the best investments those looking to go greener can make, spending about $8,000 to eliminate the need for electricity and reduce electric bills by up to 30 percent. Those who go even deeper into the solar world may find themselves eliminating the need for a power utility completely, making solar options a growing area of interest for savvy home and business owners. Currently Palmetto Bay, Pinecrest, Miami Shores, South Miami and Cutler Bay (known collectively as the “green corridor”) all offer financing to commercial and residential property owners for energy efficiency, renewable energy, and water conservation improvements, with financing repayable over the long term through their property tax bill. To that end, Gillis is working closely with the Mr. Solar team to grow the business and

continue to educate every member of his staff, going so far as to create a company policy that requires all employees, from the receptionist to warehouse staff to executive officers, to work on the roof assisting installations of all the products they sell, service, and install. “This has increased the knowledge of all of our teammates,” said Gillis. “Now any [Mr. Solar] team member will be able to answer questions regarding solar, its benefits, and the installation process of the systems.” And he’s keeping them busy. Last year the team worked with Mayor Lerner to install solar panels on her home and headed into Coral Gables to insall panels at the most energy efficient home in the City Beautiful. This year the company is on track to install more than 355 kilowatts in solar panels and have already installed 11 solar pool heaters and nine solar water heaters since January. So what’s next for Gillis? He’s currently looking into more efficient solar lighting solutions and, not surprisingly, bringing his renewable message to the world… or at least part of it. “We have expanded our business to work with clients in the Caribbean, Latin and South America.” To learn more about Mr. Solar, you can contact them at 305-378-1880 or visit www.mr-solar.com.

Where Will You Move Next? The Many Choices of Miami‌ BY FRANK DEVALDIVIELSO

W

E ARE ENJOYING ANOTHER WONDERFUL WINTER. And by that I mean golfing, hiking, running, biking, playing tennis, hoops at the park, shopping in our shorts, dining outdoors, walking, riding, leaving the windows open, taking a cruise, going to a show or watching a game. So, if you sell your home where can you go next and still enjoy Miami? The options abound! Here are but a few to consider: The city of Coral Gables is developing more and more into a pedestrian-friendly community. How about a condo near Miracle Mile so you can walk to, and enjoy, the multitude of restaurants, the Theater, the bakeries, the shops, the cafes, or all of the above?

Dadeland has much to offer and a metrorail to get you to both Downtown Miami and Miami International Airport quickly. It may also be closer to where you hang out now. Which building do you like the best? Or, is a townhome more to your liking? Brickell? Absolutely! The downtown area is bustling with activity to keep you energized. Whether the restaurants, Mary Brickell Village, the clubs, the beach, the golf at Crandon Park or Brickell Key, everything is within walking distance. What about Midtown and the Edgewater District? Talk about thinking out of the box. Who would have thought this was coming just a few years ago? Check out the growth! Shop at luxury stores, hop over to Miami Beach, take a cab to Downtown or enjoy Wynwood. Another option may be to stay in the area and continue to enjoy the peace and quiet our communities have to offer. Get a smaller home with less maintenance; look at Deering Bay and its wonderful amenities and comfortable life style; or explore the French Village for villa-style homes. A SK THE PL A STIC SURGEON

The Trouble with Eye Shadow, Botox, and Poker BY JOSE M. SOLER-BAILLO M.D., M.S, BOARD CERTIFIED PLASTIC SURGEON, SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA

B

OTOX AND OTHER COSMETIC NEUROTOXINS CAUSE temporary paralysis of the forehead and brow muscles, and improve the appearance of wrinkles. Most people don’t know that this wonderful adjunct to cosmetic surgery can make drooping eyelids worse. One of the most frequent complaints I hear from women as they age is that putting on eye shadow becomes more and more of a challenge. As the years pass the skin of the upper lids becomes more redundant, creating a formidable task. Different application techniques have been tried unsuccessfully, the pull, the stretch, even wishing for a third hand. The caking and smudging that results can get you a part on “The Walking Dead.” The problem is real, and it continues to progress. What can you do? Here is an example: You are a smart, cosmopolitan woman, and want to fight the aging battle. Immediately you turn to the “non-surgical” miracle. Botox, Dysport or whatever toxin du jour is available. You grab your Groupon voucher and run to your favorite dermatologist, spa, dentist, internist, OB/ GYN, hairdresser, friend of a friend... just to get the magic cure. Just a few “lunchtime injections” and Voila! Your forehead is so smooth that you could win the world poker championship, but your eyelids are now worse than ever. And your paralyzed forehead can’t raise your brows, even if you were reading the winning Lotto ticket. So you run back to your “expert” and explain the problem. Their usual answers follow, “mmm”, “I think you’re exaggerating,” “It will settle in a few days,” “but you look great!,” the friend of a friend “left town.” Fortunately the effects of this mistake wear off in about three to four months, and you’re back to square one. The reality is that most of these “experts” will not analyze your eyelid problem properly, and will actually cause more harm than good. So be smart. From a plastic surgeon’s perspective the easiest and most successful solution to the problem is the upper lid rejuvenation, also known in the industry as an upper lid “blepharoplasty.” The word “blepharoplasty” comes from the Greek words “blepharon,” meaning eyelid, and “plasty” meaning to change or mold. This is a simple, minimally invasive procedure that takes about thirty minutes to perform. There is no need for general anesthesia. The results are beautiful rejuvenated eyelids that can tolerate the potential negative effects of Botox. It is relatively inexpensive, painless, and the recovery time is minimal. Some cold compresses, dark glasses for a few days and you’re back to makeup in a week. Before you make a costly mistake go see a real expert with the skill set to properly analyze your issues and help you achieve the results you want. Then your forehead, and eye shadow, can look great when you win that poker championship. An International, multilingual Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Jose Soler-Baillo brings to South Florida a refreshing, modern approach to Cosmetic Surgery. Dr. Soler-Baillo earned his Medical Degree at the prestigious Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, trained in General Surgery at the Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey, and received extensive training in Plastic Surgery in Miami, New York, and Texas. Dr. Soler-Baillo is Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. For more information please visit, www.resultsmd.com or email info@soler-baillo.com. Traditionally passed from teacher to student, Yoga is a non-sectarian self-discovering philosophy or for some a way of being and living by. It is estimated that 16 million Americans practice yoga, making it a $6 billion industry. For some, the various yoga styles and lineages can be foreign: Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Hatha, Siddha, Kundalini, or Bhakti. Yet, most health experts and practitioners agree on the proven benefits of a regular yoga practice such as stress reduction, improved flexibility, stronger muscles, improved sleep patterns, weight loss and maintenance, and improved concentration and balance.

For children, yoga can do wonders as well. Yoga helps children build physical strength and flexibility and develop better physical coordination, inner-strength and body awareness. Yoga is an exercise and it helps children release energy, stress and anger, and decrease fatigue and inertia. The breath–or the connection between the physical body and the inner body-- is the magical component of any yoga practice. For children, breathing and relaxation techniques teach them how to focus, concentrate, relax and develop self-control. Yoga is a holistic approach to stress, and can offset stressors by providing a moment of pause. Children under high stress may develop night terrors, hyperactivity, fearfulness, headaches, overeating and eating disorders, low self-esteem and poor concentration, and lack of focus in school. A regular yoga practice can support children’s health and imagination, increase their self-confidence and self-esteem and can make them feel or connect with their internal self-love and respect. In summary, Yoga is a discipline that can lead kids on a path towards a calm and balanced mind, as well as help them build a strong and flexible body – tools that they can use in their everyday lives. For many adults and parents, children with such deep self-awareness can help create a more humane, kind, less stressful future for them and for all humankind. CORPO Yoga is dedicated to bring yoga to its community, including children. The studio offers kids (ages 4-8) and tweens (ages 9-13) yoga. Valuable Instruments Collecting Dust in the Closet BY PENNY DANIELS

M

USIC FILLED THE AIR. THE LOUD SOUNDS, THE HIGH PITCHES AND THE beat of the drums got the attention of the audience. The orchestra began playing the overture introducing the Broadway play – The Beauty and the Beast. The play was about to begin. The stage was set, the actors were ready, and the musicians were in their places ready to make the story come alive through music. Tones from the flute, piano, saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, trombone and drums, raised excitement for the opening act. Throughout the play, music of various octaves directed our emotions and anticipation of what would happen next. Can you imagine what this play would have been like without music?

MIKE’S GONE MAD! WE MUST CLEAR OUT ALL OLD INVENTORY! UP TO

As the play unfolded, we let our emotions play along with the sounds of music. It reminded me of a time when I played a musical instrument and performed in front of others. Boy, it seems like a lifetime ago when I learned invaluable lessons and fell in love with music. A long time ago, I learned how to read music, play the flute, play in a band and enjoyed working together with others to create musical entertainment. But… where is that old flute? Is it collecting dust in the closet? In the attic? Do I still even have it? Hmmm…it may be time to search for it and see if it still works? Is it valuable since it’s almost an antique? According to the 2009 U.S. Census data, about eight percent of Americans play musical instruments regularly. Are you part of that eight percent? If not…do you want to regularly play a musical instrument again? It’s never too late. Get that old instrument out of the closet. Dust it off. Or you may even consider trading it in towards a new instrument; you have several options, but the first step is taking it out of the closet. Instruments are valuable – both in the monetary and cultural senses. Musicians Discount Center can help you decide what is best for you and your old instrument. Maybe it’s relearning how to play the instrument. Maybe it’s trading it in for something new and different. Whatever your decision is, let us help you. Stop in today and see what is available…let music fill your life and let the fun begin! Musicians Discount Center in South Miami help you find the guitar that suits you and fits your budget, too. MEET KYLE

K

YLE IS A MATURE MALE BETA FISH WHO LIVES EACH DAY TO THE FULLEST. You may not think that fish have a personality, but Kyle certainly does! He lives in his “sister” Emily’s room, and waits patiently in his pineapple every day until she comes home from school. When he sees her, he darts out and swims excitedly around his bowl. He enjoys playing “the finger game,” following Emily’s finger as she drags it on the glass. His favorite treats are freeze-dried worms. It’s fun to watch him eat them as he slowly sneaks up on them (he must think they are alive), and sucks them up like a strand of spaghetti! Emily and her family nursed Kyle back to health when he was very sick and seemed unlikely to recover, so the extra time they are enjoying with him is very special. Kyle is a fighter who loves life, and they are happy to have him in their family.

The New Trendy Poison for Pets : Electronic Cigarettes BY DR. MARTA SANCHEZ EMDEN

T

HE USE OF E-CIGARETTES OR VAPORIZERS IS INCREASING as an alternative to the conventional, cancer-causing, tobacco cigarettes. It is debatable whether or not they are as safe as initially thought when they first entered the market. One thing is for sure: they are trendy and come in a variety of exotic flavors such as banana cream pie, chocolate mint and watermelon-pineapple. The electronic unit itself is available as a plastic or stainless steel cylinder. It is composed of a battery, a heating coil (converts liquid to vapor) and a cartridge or basket containing the liquid nicotine. It is this nicotine syrup that represents one of the most dangerous poisons in your pet’s reach. The liquid nicotine is available in different concentrations: one milliliter of the most concentrated liquid can contain the nicotine found in five cigarettes. The tasty syrup will attract even the most finicky pets. For this reason, the increasing popularity of the e-cigarettes have led to an increase in the number of reported nicotine-related pet poisonings and deaths. It is not necessary for the pet to swallow the nicotine syrup to become ill. It is readily absorbed through the oral mucosa. The pet can also absorb spilled nicotine syrup on the floor or the bedside table through the skin. Stepping on a few drops could go unnoticed, but might lead to enough absorption to cause a life threatening medical condition. Smaller pets such as cats and small dogs could get poisoned with minimal amounts of liquid nicotine. Unlike poisoning with tobacco cigarettes, in which signs of toxicity develop within a few hours, signs of e-cigarette toxicity will be seen within 15 to 60 minutes. This leaves pet owners with little time to recognize the signs and act. Signs of nicotine toxicity will vary depending on the amount of poison absorbed. You may see one sign or a combination of signs. Some of them may be: vomiting, diarrhea, agitation, increased heart and respiratory rate, tremors, lack of balance, seizures, blue gums (cyanosis), coma, and/or death. One of the factors that makes nicotine toxicity even more dangerous is that there is no first aid that you can provide at home, even if you recognize the signs in time. Because nicotine syrup is absorbed through mucosa or skin instead of digested, induction of vomiting is useless. The pet must be taken as fast as possible to the nearest veterinary emergency hospital for immediate care. Another factor that makes this poison extremely dangerous is that there is no antidote available. The emergency clinician is limited to treating the symptoms and offering supportive care. In many cases, this is not enough to save the pet’s life. Knowing that nicotine syrup is highly toxic to pets, that there is no known antidote in case of accidental poisoning and that the treatment in many cases fails to save the pet’s life, your best move to avoid pet poisonings is to keep e- cigarettes out of the reach of your pets. Remember smoking or ‘vaping’ is your choice. Do it responsibly by protecting others that do not have that choice. Health Benefits of Turmeric for Dogs BY TAMI MAIER

A

DDING TURMERIC (CURCUMA LONGA) TO YOUR DOG’S DAILY DIET CAN provide your dog with many health benefits.Turmeric is a spice derived from the root of the Curcuma Longa (also known as Indian Saffron), and is a part of the ginger family. This spice has been used as a dye, flavoring and medicine since 600 BC. Turmeric is a very important spice in India and India is the main source of the world’s supply. In an attempt to go natural with health remedies many people have added Turmeric to their diet. Studies are showing that it can offer immense health benefits for dogs it is really an investment in their overall health and wellness. Whether you feed your pup commercial kibble, a homemade recipe or gourmet meals, it is easy to add this spice in and safe to use every day. Here are the top 10 health benefits of turmeric for dogs. 1. Turmeric Has Anti-inflammatory Properties - It has been shown in many studies to be comparable to potent conventional medicines such as hydrocortisone, as well as over the counter anti-inflammatory medications, but does not have any of the toxic side effects that the conventional medications may have and is 100 percent safe. 2. Turmeric Works as a Blood Thinner - Turmeric has natural blood thinning properties. This is wonderful news for dogs that are at a high risk for blood clots as it helps the blood to flow smoothly. Just remember it can thin the blood, so it is important to stop giving to your dog if he/she will be having any type of surgery. 3. Turmeric Helps to Lower Bad Cholesterol And Support Heart Health Turmeric helps to direct your dog’s cells and boost production of the messenger proteins that create receptors for LDL cholesterol. With more of these receptors, their body will be able to get out more of the LDL cholesterol, or bad cholesterol. 4. Turmeric Stimulates Bile Production - Sometimes, dogs may have a sensitive digestive tract. With turmeric included in their daily diet, bile production will be stimulated. This helps to ensure proper digestion, since the bile will help to break down dietary fat. 5. Turmeric May Help Fight Cancer - Due to its powerful antioxidant properties it is effective in protecting colon cells from free radicals that can cause damage to healthy cell DNA. Turmeric also helps the body destroy mutated cancer cells thereby stopping the spread of cancer throughout the body. 6. Prevent Toxic Loading and Liver Damage - The Liver plays a huge role in detoxifying the body. As dogs are exposed to more amounts of toxins in their diet (as found in many commercially produced dog foods, treats and dental chews) and in their environment (household cleaners, road salt, grass, shampoo etc…) the incidence of liver damage and liver failure is exponentially increasing. Turmeric boosts the ability of the liver to detoxify. 7. Turmeric Can Prevent Bacterial infection - Turmeric comes in many different forms, typically the powder is added to their food. There is also an oil which acts as an antibiotic and helps to prevent bacterial infections in and around wounds without any side effects. Even just adding the powdered form to their food will help to fight off bacterial infections. 8. Weight and Metabolism Management - If your dog is overweight you might want to try adding either turmeric to his/her daily diet new research by the US Department of Agriculture has confirmed that Turmeric helps to speed up metabolism. 9. Defense Against Neurological Diseases of Old Age. - It provides enhanced protection against some neurological diseases brought on by old age - i.e. canine dementia. 10. Turmeric Works as a Pain Reliever - Another great reason to use turmeric for dogs is because it aids in pain relief. If your dog has any type of illness or ailment that they suffer from, adding this spice to their diet can help tremendously. As always before adding anything different to your dog’s diet please check with your regular veterinarian. AKE A BREAK FROM SPRING CLEANING AND HEAD TO DOOR COUNTY, Wisconsin for its timeless charm and natural beauty. Situated on a 70-mile long finger of land surrounded by Lake Michigan to the east and Green Bay to the west, Door County has something to offer everyone and every budget. There is history and culture or you can keep busy exploring the many shops, boutiques, and galleries. If being outdoors is your primary objective, there is an extensive park system for hiking, biking, picnics, and kayaking, and 300 miles of shoreline to enjoy boating, fishing and beaching. Voted “Best of Door County,” the Landmark Resort was where I dropped my luggage as I sped out to Wilsons for lunch. The Landmark sits on 40 wooded acres and is central to everything. The accommodations are all one-, two-, and three-bedroom suites, which makes it wonderful for families to sprawl out and be comfortable. Founded in 1906, Wilsons in Ephraim is old-fashioned soda fountain complete with white and candy red striped awnings, old Coca-Cola signs, and jukebox. Forget willpower because as soon as you see their homemade root beer floats or banana splits, it’s out the window. Leaving there I made the scenic drive to Cana Island lighthouse in Baileys Harbor. Built in 1869, it is one of 11 lighthouses, which makes Door County a lighthouse enthusiast’s heaven. With so many great restaurants to choose from, The Bistro at Liberty Square won out. The crab cakes and fresh baked French bread were an excellent choice and it was then I realized I was going to have to pace myself throughout this trip. I ended my evening at the Peninsula Players Theatre in Fish Creek watching the play Always…Patsy Cline. I was spell- Sherwood Point Lighthouse. Courtesy bound as the actress belted out song Door County Visitor Bureau. after song. If I had shut my eyes I would have sworn it was Patsy herself on that stage. The next morning, with coffee in hand and the warmth of the lobby fireplace, I sat admiring the panoramic view. I could have sat there for hours all comfy cozy, but I was anxious to get hiking at Potawatomi State Park. The park sits along the Sturgeon Bay shoreline on 1,200 acres and ended up being one of the most serene hikes I have taken. Thank God for that morning exercise because, little did I know, lunch at Scaturo’s would be homemade mac and cheese and homemade cherry pie. I took a tram ride and sat in the pews of the Moravian Church with its splendid stain glass windows, enjoyed some penny candy at the Anderson Store, walked through the 1858 Pioneer Schoolhouse, and marveled at how the teachers of the day could teach without computers. Early evening brought a chill, but as I sat around the bonfire at The Old Post Office watching Lake Michigan whitefish being cooked over the open fire for our fish boil, I was lost in the simplicity of this village. The fish boil in Door County is a century old tradition and you shouldn’t visit without going to one. My last day here came way too quick. There was so much to see, do and enjoy, and I had too little time. I decided a bike ride was in order, so I grabbed a bike at Edge of Park bike rental and started down the ten-mile trail in Peninsula State Park. I stopped several times along the way just to take in its unspoiled beauty. Soon it was lunch time and Wild Tomato Wood-Fired Pizza & Grille in Fish Creek was the place to go. When you are there you have to have The Fun Guy and the Green and Gold pizzas. And, of course, to wash it down, the Lefthand Milk Stout beer is a good choice! Once again, I found myself having to work off some food, and what better way than shopping and gallery hopping? Hours later I was sitting at the Harbor Fish Market & Grill. It just seemed apropos to eat New England-style seafood while watching my final sunset in the “Cape Cod of the Midwest.” Debbie Martinez is a Miami Dade resident and Travel Editor for The Florida Villager. BOATING TIPS

Extending the Life of An Outboard Engine BY ERIC RAISTRICK, OWNER OF ERIC’S OUTBOARD

R

EGULAR MAINTENANCE IS IMPORTANT FOR THE continued operation of any engine. Outboard engines in South Florida operate under very harsh conditions, making proper maintenance even more essential. Extreme temperatures, excessive humidity, exposure to saltwater, high RPM operation and periods of non-use all take a toll on your outboard engine. By following a regular maintenance plan and using suggested products, you can extend the life of your engine and gain enhanced performance at the same time. It is generally easier and less expensive to maintain your outboard engine than it is to repair it when it breaks. Eric’s Outboard Marine Service is ready to help sustain your Yamaha outboard’s reliability and performance with factory trained Master Technicians and Yamaha Factory Parts. The single most important procedure a boater can perform to help extend the life of an outboard engine is fresh water flushing. This helps dislodge any buildup of salt, mud, sand or silt ingested by the water system. If left unchecked, corrosion and debris can accumulate in the cooling passages, restricting the flow of water available to cool the engine. An improperly cooled engine also encourages exhaust system corrosion due to increased exhaust temperatures. You can add years to the life of your outboard engine by keeping it

clean and properly cooled. A freshwater flush after every use in salt or dirty water is highly recommended. An engine hour meter will help you track engine operation hours so you know when it is time for maintenance. Yamaha’s Command Link and Command Link Plus gauges feature built-in reminders. The recommended maintenance schedule for your particular outboard engine can be found in the Owner’s Manual. To help keep your fuel system in peak condition, regular maintenance is a must. This includes hoses, connections and proper filtration. Yamaha outboards have fuel filters built into the engine. It is wise to familiarize yourself with their location and replace them at the recommended intervals. A ten-micron (water separator) filter adds an additional layer of protection by filtering out debris before it gets to the engine. Your engine will benefit from the time spent maintaining your fuel system. It is important to regularly inspect the lower unit and propeller. Some simple maintenance procedures will pay off in hours of trouble-free enjoyment and increased value. The following steps should be followed: »» Remove the propeller. Check for fishing line or any other entanglement. If any is evident, remove and check the condition of the gear lube by removing the lower unit drain plug. White or milky gear lube

indicates water has entered the gear case, meaning the lower unit needs to be disassembled, inspected, resealed and refilled before further use. »» Change the gear lube at regular intervals. Lubricant’s effectiveness will decrease over time due to the pressure and heat generated inside the lower unit. Be sure to use the correct lubricant as specified in the owner’s manual. »» Grease the propeller shaft with Yamalube Marine Grease. »» Look over the blades for nicks, cuts and bends. Repair or replace the propeller if necessary. »» Reinstall the propeller.Although it’s one of the hardest working components on your outboard, the propeller requires surprisingly little maintenance. For questions about a Yamaha outboard engine, please call or stop by and visit our shop. Eric Raistrick opened Eric’s Outboard in 1986 as a mobile outboard marine mechanic. He became a Yamaha dealer in 1996. Eric’s Outboard is now Full Line Yamaha dealer, servicing only Yamaha outboards. THE MINDFUL DI VORCÉE

Post-Divorce Equals Spring Cleaning and Renovations BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ, DIVORCE COACH

S

PRING IS ON THE WAY AND WITH IT PEOPLE START THINKing of spring cleaning and renovations. The thought of clearing out the closets and drawers, getting the cobwebs down or big renovation projects can be invigorating, but don’t just limit that to your home, your wardrobe or your looks. View post-divorce like a good spring cleaning - out with the old and in with the new. Start renovating the inside of you, your attitude, your perspective, your thoughts, and your passions. Sometimes we put the focus and the energy on things we can see when really the focus and energy need to be put into what we feel. Working on the things within ourselves that we can’t see will eventually transform into things we and others CAN see. Your positive thoughts will create a whole new life for you. Your forgiveness of those that have wronged you will make you look and feel ten years younger. Your new perspective on life’s situations will cause you not to worry or take things personally. Embracing change and realizing that there is a divine plan will let you relax and not focus on worrisome thoughts. Gratefulness for all that you have instead of complaining about what you don’t have will lead down the path of peace. Practicing mindfulness will keep you grounded in the present moment, which allows you to really enjoy life. Embrace all the experiences you have had because they have brought you wisdom. When life changes, change with it, and when seasons change, put away last season’s things and bring out fresh things for the new one. Dust the cobwebs off of friends you have lost touch with and reconnect. Go through the boxes in your mind long ago packed away and find lost passions, dreams, and interests. Clear out people that won’t be coming with you into your new life and discard old beliefs that no longer serve you.

Decide on the renovations you want to make and list them. Then go back down the list and write a detailed description. For example, maybe one thing on your list is ‘Body’. Under description you could write, “change my hairstyle,” “tone my belly,” or “grow my nails out.” After you do that you can then write the steps that will help you get there and the date you plan on meeting that goal. Perhaps you want to become more spiritual. One of your goals may be to attend meditation classes or plan a retreat. Writing your “renovations” down is a surefire way to get clarity, get organized and get it accomplished. As a divorced mom, it is imperative and okay to take time out for you. Don’t let mother’s guilt deter you from doing your renovations and spring cleaning. Just because you are a divorced mom doesn’t mean you have been eliminated from being a woman. Take care of the one person that is holding the fort down, and that would be YOU! If you feel good, you will look good and be a better mom. If it means getting a babysitter so you can take those meditation classes, then do it. Swap nights with a friend so you can have an at home spa day or attend that book club you always wanted to join. Feed your soul with things that bring you joy and make you smile. Start your renovations now and build a new you from the inside out and while you are at it, plant some flowers and watch them bloom right alongside you! Debbie Martinez, MA is a certified, mindful life coach specializing in divorce (aka: heartbreak coach). She professionally coaches clients on how to avoid the breakup backlash and live better, not bitter. As a Florida Supreme Court Certified Family Mediator trained in collaborative divorce, Debbie gives clients the tools they need to successfully untie the knot and stand strong in the wake of adversity. Fearful When Hiring a Contractor? You Should Be! BY FRANK ISTUETA, OWNER, ISTUETA ROOFING

H

OME IMPROVEMENT IS A VITAL PART OF MAINtaining your house, and with today’s busy lifestyles it’s simply too overwhelming to approach everything as a DIY project. That’s why you need to hire a professional. However, contractor fraud is so rampant that it’s important that you review, research, and interview multiple contractors. How prevalent are contractor scams in the home improvement industry? Below we’re sharing the eye-opening findings of a recent report and showing how you can best avoid fraud. 1. Home improvement is a $200 billion per year industry. That explains why so many crooked contractors decide to get into the business. According to one recent study, new home buyers spend twice the amount improving their home as compared to homeowners who have been living in the same home for many years. 2. Poor workmanship is a homeowner’s top fear when hiring a contractor. When you hire a home improvement contractor, one of the biggest issues you may have to deal with is poor workmanship. This means you may have to spend additional money on repairs when they’re finished. To help avoid this unsavory situation, following are some

steps you can take with your contractor: »» Notify the contractor about the poor workmanship: While this sounds obvious, sometimes discussing it with them can lead to a simple fix. »» Take photos of the problem areas: Make sure you document and photograph the problem in case you need legal proof. »» Keep track of any repairs performed by another contractor: If you hire a second contractor to perform the repairs, keep all records as evidence.

3. The biggest red flag of contractor fraud is demanding money up front. While a contractor may request a down payment that is equal to 20 or 30 percent of the total job, you should never pay the full amount of the project up front. Also, you should never pay for the project materials or any of the work until you sign a legally binding contract. 4. The FTC (Federal Trade Commission) reported

To Advertise in The Florida Villager, Please call 786-505-1817

more than 13,000 home improvement-related complaints in 2011. If you don’t take the proper

steps to search for reputable contractors, there’s a chance you could be one of the homeowners

filing a claim with the FTC. Contractor scams have been the top reported inquiry for the last five years.

5. Almost 80 percent of people believe contractors are dishonest. This is a very high statistic that homeowners should consider when hiring a contractor. In addition to requesting proof of insurance, homeowners should also ask about: »» Worker’s compensation, errors, and omissions coverage; »» An amendment policy to cover any damages; »» Intent to cover personal and home damages without insurance. »» If the contractor is hesitant to sign a contract or put an agreement in writing, hire someone else.
