The Village of Pinecrest is one of only 241 communities in the country to be honored with a 2015 Playful City USA designation by KaBOOM! In the past year, the Village Council has approved close to $6 million in capital improvements for Pinecrest’s Community Center and Coral Pine Park to increase programming and enhance family play areas.

The Village of Pinecrest Council passed a resolution providing free admission to Pinecrest Gardens for active duty U.S. military personnel and their immediate family.

The Village of Pinecrest has joined forces with the city of South Miami and the city of Miami to hire an economist to challenge FP&L on assumptions made related to the proposed construction of nuclear reactors and transmission lines.

The Florida League of Cities has recognized Mayor Cindy Lerner with a 2015 Home Rule Hero Award. “Mayor Lerner embodies the definition of a Home Rule Hero,” said Florida League of Cities Legislative Director Scott Dudley.

Janis Tobin, science teacher and Director of Testing at Palmer Trinity School was recently honored by the Christian Chamber of Greater Miami with a “Teachers Who Make A Difference” award. Tobin has served PTS in a variety of roles since 1991, including lead advisor, nurse, teacher, and member of various chapel committees.

The Florida League of Cities has recognized Village of Palmetto Bay Council member Karyn Cunningham with a 2015 Home Rule Hero Award. This award was present in honor of her efforts to advance the League’s legislative agenda and help protect the home rule powers of Florida’s cities during the 2015 legislative session.

A vote by the Miami-Dade County commissioners put Palmetto Bay first in line to receive funds from any previously-approved Economic Development Fund programs that fall through. The funds will be used in the village’s downtown redevelopment efforts.

This year’s “Sales Tax Holiday” will run from Friday, August 7 through Sunday August 16. During this time there will be no sales tax collected on items including school supplies under $15 and clothing, footwear and accessories under $100 among others.

The Miami-Dade School Board’s Foundation for New Education Initiatives, Inc (FNEI) was awarded $15,000 as part of the DSW Designer Shoe Warehouse annual Shoe Lovers Care Leave Your Mark initiative. FNEI was created in 2008 by the Miami-Dade County School Board to enhance student achievement and community engagement in support of The Parent Academy and other educational initiatives.

Spend Superintendent Alberto Carvalho released his budget recommendation for the school year ahead to the Miami-Dade County School Board in early July. The total budget proposal is tentatively set at $4.83B and represents an increase of $330M over the 2014-15 School Board Budget.

VILLAGER UPDATE: WALEED MNEIMNEH Palmer Trinity School graduate Waleed Mneimneh was honored with a visit with President Barack Obama in July. The president spoke with Mneimneh about his Silver Knight Award and involvement with the University of Miami-Nova Southeastern Center for Autism and Related Disabilities. Marketing Task Force Seeks Members to Raise Awareness of Pinecrest Public School Advantages

LTHOUGH THE VILLAGE OF PINECREST HAS ALWAYS HAD A REPUTAtion for the high quality public schools that supports its strong property values, some residents have growing concerns that heavy marketing by charter and magnet schools is drowning out the advantages of the superior traditional community schools in or within the boundaries for Pinecrest residents. The Village, recognizing the importance of quality education to community quality of life, has provided financial support to all five Pinecrest schools since its incorporation. Each year, the Village offers grants of $10,000 per school, per year, to Pinecrest, Palmetto and Howard Drive Elementary, Palmetto Middle School and Miami Palmetto Senior High – a number now approaching a $1 million investment in extras to enhance the educational experience of Village schoolchildren. But Village support of its public schools reaches far beyond just writing checks. In 2010, the Village partnered with Miami-Dade Public Schools (MDCPS) in an educational compact, which provides a structure to focus resources, share information, and create innovative new educational programs. Compact goals are facilitated by the Village’s Educational Advisory Council (EAC), a group hosted by Mayor Cindy Lerner. Its monthly meetings during the school year are regularly attended by all five public school principals, school board representatives, MDCPS staff, PTA/PTSA presidents, and any interested residents. This fall, the EAC plans a renewed focus on several areas of the compact, including

program options that would retain students that typically select participation in magnet programs vs. remaining in Palmetto Middle School and Palmetto Senior High. “Magnets get all the hype,” said Ann McMaster, an EAC member and community relations chair of Miami Palmetto Senior High PTSA. “But no one is promoting what’s available at our phenomenal traditional public schools. We need people to help get the word out that Pinecrest schools truly offer educational excellence in your own backyard. There’s no need to go elsewhere.” To accomplish this, the EAC is creating a new community-driven Village Schools Marketing Task Force. With the goal of raising public awareness of the depth, breadth, and quality of the educational offerings available at our traditional community schools, they are seeking participation by interested stakeholders, preferably residents and local business with marketing/PR experience to join PTA/PTSA members from all five schools. “Everyone in Pinecrest has a vested interest in our public schools, whether or not you have kids attending them,” McMaster added. “Studies show property values increase directly in proportion to proximity to high quality public schools attended by children from local neighborhoods.” For Village EAC meeting dates, go to www.pinecrest-fl.gov. The program, which is part of a national 501(c)3 organization, mobilizes communities, individuals and resources through an all-volunteer network to provide weekend food for elementary school children who, during the school week, participate in the National school lunch program, but on weekends, might otherwise go hungry. Blessings in a Backpack currently provides nearly 3 million hunger-free weekends to more than 76,000 children in 44 states and the District of Columbia. Last year on “Blessings in a Backpack Day,” mayors across the country (in 55 cities and more than 20 states) joined forces, packing bags full of food for children as part of a nationwide effort to combat childhood hunger. The KISS Initiative facebook.com/theKISSinitiative BACKGROUND: Established in May 2015, the KISS Initiative helps pediatric stroke survivors via a restricted fund within the Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation by providing financial assistance for therapies critical to rehabilitation after stroke. “In our first two months, we raised more than $12,000 through T-shirt sales and straight donations from supporters,” says Davis. ABOUT THE KISS INITIATIVE: Though strokes are one of the top ten causes of death in children (affecting teens, children, infants and even babies in the womb) resources are scarce due to lack of awareness, creating financial hardships for families whose children require physical, occupational and speech therapies. “Because these survivors require so many different services, they often run out of insurance coverage, and if they are over the age of three, they are no longer covered by the State of Florida’s early intervention program,” says Davis. “Thus, children are often forced to forgo crucial therapies due to finances.” The KISS Initiative (it stands for Kid and Infant Stroke Support) raises funds to help provide these necessary therapies and maximize the chances of a successful recovery. “Though so much needs to be done in the world of pediatric stroke, this is one area where we can make the biggest change in the shortest amount of time,” says Davis.

UPCOMING PLANS: The organization’s current goal focuses on enabling stroke survivors to go through a Constraint Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT) program at a free or reduced cost. The three week intensive program caters to children affected by paralysis or weakness on side of the body, and focuses on casting the functional arm to help patients rebuild strength on the weaker side. “Because the program has proven to be so effective, it is an incredible disservice to turn affected children away from this intensive due to finances, knowing that their motor skills will improve dramatically,” says Davis. But aside from fundraising, Davis and the rest of the KISS team hope for a much simpler result: awareness. “No parent should learn for the first time, when it is his or her newborn in the intensive care unit, that a child can suffer from a stroke, just like an adult” says Davis. “The more awareness we raise, the more successful advocates will be in facilitating the implementation of pediatric stroke guidelines at hospitals across the country. Rapid response guidelines are imperative to ensure that children displaying stroke symptoms upon arrival at an ER are diagnosed quickly and accurately.”

A Very Entrepreneurial Summer BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

ORGET SWIMMING, TENNIS AND BASKETBALL. For one group of Miami-Dade students summer is all business. The eight-week intensive camp is run by Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE), a non-profit dedicated to helping students from low-income communities recognize business opportunities and think like entrepreneurs. The 20 students (19 from Dade and one from Broward) attend the camp for free thanks to sponsorships by NFTE and Miami-Dade College’s Idea Center and receive advice and mentorship from county leaders. Examples? Miami-Dade County Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho led a panel discussion on entrepreneurship with the students on June 24, learning more about the ideas being incubated and providing advice on how to pursue educational opportunities, start their own businesses and succeed in life, while CareCloud CEO Albert Santalo and Churromania founder Ariel Acosta-Rubio visited the camp in early July. During the camp students come up with a business idea and work to complete a business plan. Plans are presented to a panel of judges at the end of the camp with winner walking away with seed capital for their idea. This year’s innovations include an app that seeks out scholarships, a video game based in vocabulary skills and a binder that acts as both a pillow and laptop cover.

PTA/PTSA ? What’s That? And Why Should I Care? BY ANN MCMASTER

VERY FALL, THE ANNUAL BACK TO SCHOOL RITUAL INCLUDES A HUGE stack of paperwork to read, sign and return that your child will bring home the first day or over the first week. If you’re tempted to toss the PTA forms (or PTSA, depending on your school), please reconsider. It’s just as important (possibly more important) as the rest of the pile. Parent Teacher (Parent-Teacher-Student in the upper grades) Associations are the vehicles that connect parent and community resources with the school. The state simply doesn’t provide sufficient funding to have truly great public schools without extra support, and Village of Pinecrest schools are renown for their powerhouse PTA/PTSAs. They raise funds (all are registered 501(3) (C)s, so donations are tax-deductible), and provide countless volunteer hours that support school programs that would otherwise not be available, while providing networking and social opportunities for parents. “I’ve heard people say they don’t join because they don’t have time to volunteer,” said Anna Hockhammer, president of Miami Palmetto Senior High’s PTSA. “We understand not everyone can volunteer, but please, at a minimum, pay the nominal membership dues, sign up for our school communications, and consider a donation.“ Parents are encouraged to participate at any level, as any contribution helps. “It all adds up, and every little bit helps,” Hockhammer said, adding that many volunteer projects don’t require an ongoing commitment and/or can be done from home. Hochkammer estimates only 25-to-30 percent of Palmetto High families participated in the PTSA in any way last year, yet the organization raised – and reinvested – more than $100,000 into the school in the last 12 months. “It’s a very long list of extras we provided,” she said. “Everything from big stuff like a new computer testing suite with 50 computers, to new sound equipment for the auditorium, updated hardware and software for the student TV production crews, to small things you’d assume your tax dollars paid for, such as sheet music, musical instruments, and even the cheerleader’s flags.” This fall’s fundraising goal is $15,000 to re-equip and update the school’s aging weight training room, used by all the sports teams and PE classes. At Palmetto Middle last year, the PTSA raised $16,000 to purchase books and materials to launch the prestigious new Cambridge Program, in addition to spending more than $25,000 on everything from school supplies and teacher support to technology (including a new school app), student events, landscaping, benches and tables. This year, the parent group hopes to buy 200 computers and resurface the basketball court. PTSA president Linda Dwyer encourages parents to participate. “Some parents that are really active and involved in elementary school PTAs seem to drop out in middle school,” she said. “But middle school is a really critical time for you to be part of what’s going on in their lives, and it’s great to get to know other parents in the same situation.” The Pinecrest Elementary PTA raised and donated more than $70,000 toward the school’s wish list last year. Items purchased include 50 Surface Pro 3 tablets for 5th graders, new television equipment for in-house TV station WPEN, art supplies, iPads for differentiated instruction and improved and enhanced security for our main entrance. PTA President Elyssa Lewis asks that everyone mark their calendars for the school’s Nov. 21 annual carnival. The carnival raises significant funds and provides Pinecrest and the community with a day of fun. “Our PTA partners with Pinecrest administration, staff and teachers to ensure our students are given every opportunity to succeed,” said Lewis. “Joining the PTA and volunteering helps involve parents into our wonderful Pinecrest community. T IS UNFORTUNATELY NOT UNCOMMON THESE DAYS TOO hear how bullying and or an ill-mannered child can intimidate another student in school. Good manners can make a big difference in a student’s success and/or failure in many aspects of life. This is why it is so imperative for parents to begin teaching etiquette to their children as early as possible. Oftentimes, as an etiquette expert, I am asked to suggest key ways to instill good manners into children, especially with such a fast-paced family schedule. What I like to suggest is to participate in activities that infuse kids with interpersonal skills such as respect, kindness and being a role model/leader among their peers. Here are some Back-To-School in-home etiquette tips any parent can do with their child to prepare them for school success. 1. Use Key Gold and True Words – Please, thank you, excuse me and you’re welcome. Although we know to use these words it can be very easy to fall out of practice. It is good for parents to start working with their children to emphasize the use of these words. Once a child, or teen, understands this etiquette structure he or she will begin to automatically use the words in the appropriate manner. This will be a positive stand-out for the child in school, and very much appreciated by teachers. 2. Neat and Tidy – Before school starts is a great time to begin helping children understand how to clean up on their own. Whether coming in the house from the pool, beach or just outside with friends, we need to train children and teens to pick-up after themselves. This skill set may not seem like a big deal until you have a classroom full of students. Again, if your child is accustomed to cleaning up after themselves this will definitely set them apart as a leader and role model. Big plus for them! A great time to practice this rule is at the dinner table as well as practicing washing hands before and after meals. 3. Respect others and their differences – This skill set is huge. I cannot emphasize this enough. Most schools have now implemented a no-tolerance code for any child who cannot respect others. Monitor the way your child speaks and/ or comments about others, even their friends. What may seem to be a harmless comment or action to a child can be detrimental to another. Practice speaking positive words or giving positive compliments to their siblings and friends. In today’s “give me what I want society” some kids may feel this skill is insignificant; however, understanding the feelings of others and making others feel good is a leadership skill that teachers look upon with high regard. ORGET THE ENDLESS LISTS OF PENCILS, ERASERS AND MULTI-COLORED FOLDERS, THE REAL questions on Back to School shoppers’ minds are more style and less stylus. But with new products and innovations flooding the market it’s sometimes hard to wade through the mass of offerings. To that end we turned to the experts for their take on what hot for 2015. Here are a few of their top trends:

Personalization It’s not always about the books. BACK TO SCHOOL Lunch Bunch: 5 Tips for Packing the Perfect Meal BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

OR MANY PARENTS PACKING HEALTHY LUNCHES is right up there with homework… a necessary yet frustrating part of the school year. Whether it’s a picky eater, a food allergy or just the stress of finding something new, every parent struggles with the age old question of what to pack. In anticipation of the school year we spoke with Stephanie Uscategui, RDN, LDN, a Clinical Dietitian at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. From diluting the juice to balancing a long day, Uscategui gave us a look inside the perfect (or as close to perfect as we can get…) lunchbox. 1. It’s all about balance. According to Uscategui, parents should balance the lunchbox just as they would a meal at home. “You want to make sure all the food groups are included,” she says. “So protein, dairy, fruits and vegetables and a whole grain.” If you can’t get it all in via the lunch box, Uscategui says it’s perfectly fine to fill in the holes with an afternoon snack such as pita pockets with tuna or chicken salad and half a banana or yogurt and fruit. 2. Think creatively. Though she stresses to always make sure to take advice from a credible source, Uscategui praises sites such as Pinterest and Instagram for giving parents new ideas on food presentation. Some of her own tricks? Wraps filled with turkey,

egg salad or tuna cut into small rolls (“Kids want something easy to grab,” she says.); lettuce wraps packaged with nicely separated fillings; veggie noodles with tomato sauce; and using cookie cutters to cut fruit into fun shapes. 3. Go for the long haul. Though Uscategui recommends that kids eat every three-to-four hours, she acknowledges that that’s not always possible with staggered school lunch schedules. So when packing for younger students who may eat an earlier lunch “always make sure there’s a protein,”she says. She also advises cutting back on the starchy foods (“Carbs digest very quickly...”) and adding in a bit of good fat such as an avocado or a salad dressing dip for veggies to help keep them full longer. 4. Recruit help. Uscategui suggests involving kids in meal prep as much as possible, even when it comes to packing lunches. “Nutrition is so important,” she says. “Healthy eating has to be a priority.” To that end she says it can even start the night before, as leftovers make a great option for the next day’s lunch. Uscategui is keen on the varied options now available for storing foods in the lunchbox and says heating up leftovers in the morning and packing them in a sealed thermos will keep it at a good temperature for lunchtime.

5. Add in some fun. Uscategui says even though a piece of fruit is always the best dessert, that doesn’t mean there’s no place for cookies… as long as it’s part of the bigger picture. “You have to be balanced... variety is key,” she says. The same goes for beverages. Though she categorically recommends water as the first and best option, she says diluting no more than 4 oz of juice with water can work for kids who aren’t as keen to go cold turkey on the Capri-Sun.

Does Education Have to be a Partisan Issue – Maybe Not BY FEDRICK C. INGRAM, PRESIDENT, UNITED TEACHERS OF DADE

UR NATION HAS A TWO-PARTY ADVERSARIAL SYSTEM of government -- but do we always need to be adversaries? In the past, leaders in Washington acted in a bipartisan or nonpartisan way on a number of important issues, chiefly foreign policy and education, however that’s no longer the case. On Capitol Hill, we’re entering a period of bruising Congressional foreign policy battles over Pacific trade, relations with Cuba and an Iranian arms deal. Do we also need to treat school children and education like Whack-a-Mole? Hopefully not and there is reason to hope. Recently, the United States Senate passed a major piece of education legislation where Tea Party Republicans and liberal Democrats found common ground with the Every Child Achieves Act (ESEA). We are closer than we have been in more than 14 years to getting relief from the testing madness and the “sanction, close and punish schools” climate of the past decade. Less hopeful are the signs from the field of Republican Presidential candidates. Scott Walker recently gutted the budget for Wisconsin’s higher education system to show how tough he could be as a budget cutter on the campaign trail. While the Senate has backed away from the drill and kill approach where the answer to everything is testing students, Jeb Bush is still beating that drum. Jeb, Marco Rubio and their sparring partners want to privatize schools. Privatization isn’t a silver bullet – far from. Walking distance from the White House, children attending DC’s public schools were served spoiled milk and fed Slim Jims as their main course by a food service operator last year that replaced the school district’s public employees. The vendor, Chartwells, ultimately had to reimburse DC’s public schools $19 million dollars for their misdeeds. Rather than serving up Slim Jims in the cafeteria or slimmed down education offerings in the classroom, instead of searching for a silver bullet, we need to find serious leaders willing to cross the aisle and find common ground. In 2016 let’s support candidates who support public schools, teachers and the children they serve. Education doesn’t need to be a partisan issue. United Teachers of Dade is a union of professionals who work to advance the cause of public education. We educate students, empower our members, and work with parents and the community to build a stronger Miami.

S.T.E.M. Careers: Breaking Down Gender Expectations BY LAUREN ZALDUA

YPICALLY, PEOPLE ASSUME WOMEN WILL FIND AN INTEREST IN SERVICE fields such as nursing and teaching, but that does not mean that the stereotypical male career paths, such as engineering and architecture, are off the table. The engineering program at TERRA Environmental Research Institute has allowed me to feel accepted and welcome to experience “the other side.” When applying for my academy during spring of 2014, I was well aware of the type of classes I would be taking, and the heavy load of mathematic and scientific information that I would be introduced to. But with that aside, the most significant factor of being a female in the engineering academy has been the environment I walk into every school day at 7:35 a.m. There is no doubt that when I came in on the first day of my freshman year, I was intimidated. Intimidated by the intricate math language displayed on the board, by the abundance of metal in the lab, and by the unproportioned ratio of boys versus girls that stood before me. I wasn’t going to isolate myself for the next four years, nor was I going to request a change in academies — although I was tempted — just because I felt outnumbered. Women should never have to feel lesser than what they really are, just because of what is “expected” of them.

I wanted to be different, I wanted to learn more about what I found a passion in, and I am glad I did. In the engineering academy at TERRA, freshman year, I was able to use a new computer program, SolidWorks, which allowed me to experience a threedimensional design process. In addition to that, I was instructed to complete/construct three homemade projects in groups, which exponentially got more intricate each time- a mousetrap car, a water bottle rocket launcher and a catapult. These were all tasks that at first I thought would be won over by male groups, but as the year went on, I realized the highest scores and coolest designs weren’t by the all-male groups, but mainly by the mixed gender ones. In society, there needs to be a balance. It is true that generally men are better at building things, and working with their hands, but when technicality and creativity come in, that’s where the women excel. For instance, when you are building a catapult, you need to incorporate unique ways of thinking to make your catapult stand out and launch objects the farthest. When you combine the creativity the women contribute and the craftsmanship that the men can bring, the outcome will be significantly better than if the project was completed entirely by men. (That’s not to say it can never be flipped, I know many women who are talented builders and men who are exceptionally creative.) In my opinion, society should make available more opportunities for female students to go into these S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) careers through magnet programs such as the one at TERRA. In this way, there will be a better gender balance developing a better output in the workforce. A note to all of the ladies out there: be courageous, step out of the box, and do what you love no matter what the “norm” may be. Create your own norm! CAMACHO’S TECH TIPS

O ONE CAN EVER ACCUSE CHARLES CAMACHO OF not having perfect timing. The Memory Factory owner graduated from Miami Sunset Senior High in 2002, placing his last few years in high school at the unknowingly perfect intersection to launch his future. “I took TV production for the last two years of high school,” says Camacho. “I actually was able to see the industry change from analog to digital, which is what we do here on a regular basis. We take analog memories- video tapes, photographs, etc.- and we make them digital.” Those memories, which come mainly from local families, are handed over to Memory Factory experts such as Camacho who not only transform the dated mediums to more modern DVDs or digital files, but also work with families to organize and update the photos and/or videos via color and tracking correction and video and audio enhancement. The team also works with clients to create a custom final product that can be viewed for years to come or shared immediately via email or social media. “We take old media and preserve it in a way that makes it very easy for clients to organize and continue bringing us all their newer media,” says Camacho. “Our relationships with customers are pretty personal, I’ve been working with some of them so long that sometimes I’ve filmed a child’s Bar Mitzvah and then actually created a sports highlight reel to help that same child apply for college.” And for families, the memories can sometimes go back even farther than expected. Camacho says it’s not uncommon for him to discover hidden treasure when reviewing what’s been hiding in a garage for years. “We’ll be skimming along making sure everything looks good, when we’ll all of a sudden find a real gem,” he says. “We once got to see an 8mm reel that had footage on in from 1905. It was a New Year’s party and one of the oldest reels that

we’ve ever captured.” Camacho’s ties to the business may not go back quite as far, but his more than a decade working under the Memory Factory umbrella has been a labor of love. After joining the business under former owner Paul Quentel in 2004, Camacho learned the business firsthand, “dabbling in every service we provide here.” In 2012, Camacho and partners Juan Calvo and Natassja Nunez purchased the business from Quentel. Aside from helping more and more families preserve their precious memories, Camacho says his passion for, and continual interest in, the business comes from his longtime love of new technology. Camacho says those who are looking to digitize old photos should take the extra time to organize. Though it may seem overwhelming, even the slightest bit of forward thinking can make things easier. “Take those albums and loose photos and just try and group them the best you can.,” he says. “It makes digitizing them a piece of cake, and it gives you a head start on organizing them digitally.” ∙∙ BEWARE THE WEATHER. In such a humid climate, relegating old media to a box in the garage or crawl space can mean disaster. “The humidity can really do a number on your home movies and albums,” says Camacho. “I always suggest putting them in a plastic container and keeping them in a closet in the house where they can get some AC.”

No Excuses BY GABRIEL LAMAS, OWNER, FITNESS TOGETHER

VER THE COURSE OF TIME THAT I HAVE OWNED personal training gyms, I have heard every possible excuse as to why clients cannot commit to a rigorous exercise schedule or why they have not seen the results they had hoped for. Work and home stress, kids, school all play a major role in distracting one from reaching their health and fitness goals. No matter what one’s environmental circumstances are, though, getting in the best shape of your life is always possible. Recently, a staff member in one of my gyms decided to do his first bodybuilding competition. For those that are unaware; a bodybuilding competition requires one to diet down to near death levels of body-fat while maintaining as much muscle as possible. Essentially, it is taking the concept “getting in the best shape of your life” to a true extreme. When Andrea told me that he wanted to do his first competition I was excited for him but also concerned, as I knew that not only did he work full-time in my Coconut Grove gym but he was also a full time pre-med undergraduate student with a young child. Familiar with the many reasons that I had heard over and over as to why clients had struggled to reach their goals, I was admittedly worried that Andrea might be taking on more than he could handle. Over the next four months, I watched in amazement as Andrea ate spartan pre-prepared and tupperware-packaged meals of meticulously measured chicken breast and green vegetables five times per day, while training clients from 6 am onward and studying for his classes in between breaks. Off and on he would tell me about his new son, to whom he was a great father, and always was able to come home with excitement and enthusiasm despite a long work day, minimal sleep -- and no carbohydrates. Eventually the time passed and Andrea went to his competition, supported by the staff in both my South Miami and Coconut Grove gyms. By this point, we had all been so amazed by his fortitude, that they now followed him as his own cheering section. The day before Andrea’s competition, he had work and an exam. He ended up placing second in the most competitive bodybuilding competition in Florida -- and one of the most competitive amateur competitions in the country. While I understand that the average person starting an exercise program has no interest in becoming a bodybuilder, my point is to illustrate that there are truly no excuses when it comes to your fitness. It is certainly not easy, but the rewards are worth it -- whether you are standing on a bodybuilding stage, proud of your body at the beach with your kids or just having an easier time carrying your groceries to the front door. NCE THE NEST EMPTIES MANY HOMEOWNERS ARE staying put for financial and physical reasons. This helps create a situation where buyers find a reduced inventory of homes for sale. Further, it helps to fuel the appreciation in home values while at the same time creating unrealistic expectations for some sellers. The real estate market charges on! Empty nesters hold on to homes because it makes financial sense. Many have lived in their homes long enough to have paid down the mortgage substantially and have a very affordable monthly payment. Where else can you live for the same amount of money as your monthly mortgage? The cost of living is less than moving to a new home when you consider property taxes, transfer taxes and capital expenses to move (moving costs, closing costs, remodeling when you sell, remodeling after you buy). As a result the number of homes for sale in Palmetto Bay right now is sufficient to meet the demand for only three months, while in Pinecrest the supply will last six months at the current rate of absorption. Destinations like upstate Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas have a lower cost of living and bring the promise of a less stressful lifestyle. Food for thought for some and many have done more than think about it. When leaving Miami you give up the numerous activities that are always available, the great variety in restaurants, the year round sunny weather, but, also the higher cost of living, traffic congestion and the reality of stressful living in the city. It’s also convenient to stay at home from a physical perspective, that is, it’s not cumbersome to take care of the basic maintenance. There are, however, continuous improvements, whether an updated kitchen or a bathroom, or new landscaping. Once it’s not convenient or you’ve had enough trips to the pool store, then that can become a reason to move. Condo, perhaps? When a life-changing event happens like a grandchild arriving in Central Florida. When you want to stabilize finances by cashing out the equity in the home, or you want to be near the activities that you are now passionate about in another part of town. Whatever the life-changing events are, they motivate empty nesters to put their home on the market. And the buyers are ready to pounce! The real estate “happy song” that is heard throughout brings out sellers that are speculating for prices above market value. They want that buyer that will pay cash because “they’ll fall in love with my home.” No need for appraisals, no need for inspections, just let lightning strike. And sometimes, it does. The remaining 99 percent of the times it does not. One of the reasons the cash buyers have cash is that they’re really smart about their money and will not overpay. So too, are the buyers that are financing the purchase. In the last year twelve homes have sold for more than one million dollars in Palmetto Bay and there is a very tight inventory in Pinecrest for homes priced between $1 million and $1.5 million. The real estate market stops for no one. Jump in when you’re ready.

How to Perform Easy Pet CPR BY DR. MARTA SANCHEZ EMDEN

NOWING HOW TO PERFORM CPR ON AN ANIMAL IS A MUST FOR EVERY pet owner. There are certain emergency situations where action is required immediately. Keep in mind that it only takes three minutes for an animal that is not breathing to develop permanent brain damage. Some information found on the internet on how to perform pet CPR is not totally accurate and with pet CPR techniques modified every few years for efficiency it’s easy to understand why there is so much confusion. Note that the animal must be unconscious; a weak pet that has collapsed but is conscious has the potential to bite due to fear or pain or both. It’s also important to point out that CPR will not be effective on animals that show cardiac-respiratory arrest due to chronic diseases, such as cancer or cardiac conditions:

Recognize that the pet is unconscious. If the pet is unconscious he/she will not be responsive, the pupils will be dilated, there will be no respiration, the gums will be blueish, and there will be a very weak or nonexistent heartbeat. If the pet seems unconscious but you are not sure if it is breathing or if there is a heartbeat, initiate CPR anyway. 2. Initiate Artificial Respiration. Quickly place the pet on a firm surface with the right side of the body down and the head aligned with the spine. Open the mouth and look for any object that might be blocking the air passages and remove it if present. Pull the tongue out of the mouth and let it hang on the side. Gently close the muzzle with your hand. Make an airtight seal by surrounding the pet’s nose (or the whole muzzle if it’s a small dog or cat) with your lips, then blow in the nostrils for 2 seconds, pause, and repeat once more. 3. Initiate cardiac compressions. Place one hand on each side of the chest at the level of the animal’s heart (this is the point where the elbow comes in contact with the chest when you flex the pets elbow and shoulder all the way towards the back). For cats and little dogs, perform the compressions with just one hand, fingers on one side of the chest and the palm of the hand on the other side, as if squeezing a squeaky toy. Compress the chest 30 times at a rhythm of two compressions per second. (To make this task easier, follow the rhythm of the Bee Gees 1983 hit song “Staying Alive” in your mind.) 4. Maintain the respiration-cardiac compression cycles. Perform two artificial respirations followed by 30 cardiac compression cycles for ten minutes. Check every one-to-two minutes to see if the pet is breathing on its own and/or has a heartbeat. Remember to be patient; in a best case scenario, it will take at least a minute for your compressions to successfully bring blood into the heart and for you to start noticing signs of improvement such as pink gums. Your chest compressions are not as efficient as a natural cardiac compression. They only produce 30 percent of the cardiac output produced by a natural heartbeat, so be persistent while performing the respiration-compression cycles. You must take your pet to the nearest emergency clinic after ten minutes, even if you feel you were successful performing the CPR technique. Animals that have gone into cardiac or respiratory arrest need further medical care to assure their survival. The most important thing to remember is to stay calm, analyze the situation and take immediate action. You might save your best friends life one day. 1.

FTER PONDERING MY UPCOMING 56TH birthday, I decided I wanted to feel what it would be like to be a child again so…“I’m going to Disney World.” However, I didn’t want to stay at a Disney Resort. Some research brought me to the front door of the new and beautifully appointed Four Seasons. The resort had everything that I needed to tap into my inner child: a five-acre playground called Explorer Island which consisted of a splash zone with water cannons, two waterslides, a lazy river that wound around a “Ruined mansion,” beach volleyball, nets that hung from trees, outdoor movie night and even an afternoon licorice bar. After checking in and dropping my luggage off in what could only be described as an “OMG” room, I ensconced myself at the adults-only pool. Ok, I know you’re saying, “What? That’s not tapping into the child within” but after my four-hour drive I wanted relaxation, peace and a margarita. What I got was all that and a staff that couldn’t do enough for me; I felt so pampered. Speaking of pampering, the resort has a magnificent spa that offers mind-boggling services and quality time with yourself. Again you ask, “How is an afternoon at The Spa tapping into your inner child?” Don’t kids need TLC? But back to my room for a minute. It was huge with two balconies, a king size bed that when I flopped on it, yes, a running flop, I sank two feet. The comforter and pillows were heaven as they allowed me to get snuggled up for a nap. An iPad mini that accesses everything in the hotel sits on your nightstand. I downloaded the app on to my phone so on my way back from the Magic Kingdom I could have ice cream waiting for me in my room. Too cool! However, the “No Way” moment came when I realized there was a TV in my bathroom mirror so I could watch a Disney movie while soaking in the tub. Don’t forget, I’m here to seek out the kid in me. The next morning I jumped out of bed at 7:30 am to meet the complimentary shuttle to Disney. First stop was to buy a pair of Minnie ears. Ears in place, I boarded the ferry to the only place I could reclaim the girl inside--the Magic Kingdom. The words escape me as to how I felt when I walked out onto Main Street. All I could do was smile and giggle to myself; this was going to be a fun day! I headed to the one place that beckoned me--Cinderella’s Castle.There I snatched up a map and plotted all my favorites, The Haunted Mansion, Peter Pan, Pirates of the Caribbean, Swiss Family Treehouse, Hall of Presidents, Jungle Cruise and last but not least, Dumbo (hands in the air). Now don’t laugh, everyone that knows me knows I don’t ride roller coasters, but wasn’t today a special day? As I squeezed myself into The Barnstormer amongst all the little kids I had the attendant snap a picture to memorialize this auspicious moment. It was almost 4 o’clock and that meant the parade was about to begin, so I grabbed a Mickey ice cream bar and headed to Main Street. They were all there in their splendor, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Belle and Snow White. The last float was passing by and the thought struck me, “It’s now or never” and with that I jumped in behind the float and yes, my faithful readers, I danced my way down Main Street. Back at the hotel, I grabbed an inner tube and, with a frozen Margarita in one hand and frozen blackberries in the other, I floated into another world. The Four Seasons has four outstanding restaurants but on the 17th floor is Capa, a Spanish steakhouse with an open-air terrace that is the perfect spot to have a glass of wine and watch the Disney fireworks. I pulled up a comfy seat and as the fireworks lit up the night sky I toasted the end of a fun filled weekend with my inner child. Directions: 1. 1. Place one cup of coconut oil in a mixing bowl and add one teaspoon of hot water, if needed, to make it soft and pliable. 2. 2. Add the turmeric, kelp and parsley flakes. 3. 3. Mix thoroughly, store in fridge between uses.

Your Best Years Can Be Your Post Divorce Years BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ, DIVORCE COACH

F I HAD ONE DOLLAR FOR EVERY TIME I HEARD “I GAVE HIM the best years of my life,” I could shut my practice down. What I try to help my clients see is that they made that statement based only on what they know so far. The future is still not known, so in actuality they are making not only a false statement, but setting themselves up for a self-fulfilling prophecy. Yes, I will concede that in present time they have that feeling/ emotion, but having the willingness to believe that it might not be true is the first step toward imagining a better future. Bestselling author Spencer Johnson writes, “You cannot always control external events, but you can control your personal peaks and valleys by what you believe and what you do.” Divorce is your valley and the path out is your belief system. One thing I have noticed is that people tend to equate “the best years of my life”with age. As if being younger really means the best time of your life. Perhaps the wisdom and knowledge you have acquired will make the years to come the best years... even if you are 50 or 60. I would like for you to write down how your post-divorce years can be the best years of your life. What are some things you can do now that you couldn’t do while married or in your younger years? What are lessons you have learned that have been transformative for you and will impact your future? Has the divorce shown you your purpose that you might not have found if you were married? So maybe the phrase should be, “I gave my all in my marriage.” I am a firm believer in your thoughts dictating what comes to you. Phrase things in a positive form and see how your mood and energy shift, all for the better, as you walk the path out of your valley.

BARK AT THE PARK Hundred of families joined the Humane Society of Greater Miami at Marlins Park for their annual “Bark at the Park” and “Adopt-O-Mania” events on June 13. 140 pets were adopted into loving forever families prior to the start of the Marlins/Rockies game, with an additional 400 doggie tickets sold to benefit the cause. “We are very grateful to the Miami Marlins and all the wonderful families who came out with their dogs to support animals in need,” said Laurie Hoffman, Executive Director of the Humane Society of Greater Miami. “ We were super appreciative to receive a generous donation of $2,000 from the Miami Marlins right before the game started, in addition to more than $4,000 received from the doggie tickets sold.”

REFINERY29 CREATES SUMMER FESTIVAL Simon Malls and Refinery29 transformed Dadeland Mall into a summer festival experience on July 11, with a shoppable “Style Stage” curated by Refinery29 editors featuring select items from local boutiques and popular national retail brands and a “Beauty Stage” that included a pop-up beauty bar and temporary tattoo parlor. COMMUNITY EDUCATION PROGRAM On July 18th, Sophiel talked about REIKI for relaxation and healing, and Yasi Nava talked about Oriental Medicine and Acupuncture. Both lectures were a success, engaging the attendees through participation in exercises and Q&A. The lectures effectively supported the educational goal of elevating community awareness and alternative medicine.

The Alper JCC 40+ 4.0 Men’s Team scored a monumental victory at USTA League’s 2015 Sectional Championships on July 12. The team’s most recent match preceding the victory took place at Daytona Beach against Broward County. It was a hard-fought battle with four third-set tie-breakers, and the deciding match (number one singles) lasted slightly over three hours in the searing summer heat. At the end, the JCC’s team triumphed with a score of 3-2. “I have believed in you all, all season and at sections, and you have constantly rewarded me for my faith in you. You are truly champions,” wrote Glen Thomas, the team’s captain, in an email to the rest of the team. The team will soon prepare for USTA League’s 2015 National Championships.
