Your Voting Precinct Summer is Over May Have Changed S It’s Miami-Dade County’s duty to provide you with a convenient way to cast your vote—and it’s a duty that we take very seriously. That’s why we’ve redrawn voting precincts and it may affect where you cast your vote. Some voters will be voting at a new Election Day voting location. Some voters will be voting at the same location, but will be assigned a new precinct number. So if you vote on Election Day, make sure you know where to vote before heading to the polls. To confirm your current voting location, visit www.iamelectionready.org or call 3-1-1.

EPTEMBER IS A BUSY TIME OF YEAR...SUMMER IS WINDING DOWN AND the new school year has begun, it’s the start of football season, and the holidays are right around the corner. For all of us at The Florida Villager, this September also marks our two year anniversary! And what a year it’s been! We are beyond excited to now have two editions of the magazine in circulation, and can proudly say we reach more than 42,000 homes. We promise to continue working hard to provide you with a high quality publication covering community news, school news, local events, and general interest pieces. We are thrilled to feature Cisca Construction on this month’s cover, whose motto is ‘On time, on budget and no b.s.’ Don’t miss the great article about CEO Frank Balleste, and the passion he has put into creating this wonderful company (page 30). Also in this month’s magazine is the ‘Season Preview,’ which takes a look at the upcoming events, shows and concerts headed to South Florida (page 16). And for a touching read, don’t miss ‘The Philanthropist’ (page 18), which features Lisa Smith and the TRGS Foundation, an organization founded in honor of her late husband. Lastly, to find out more about all the great work done by our local Rotary Clubs, check out Luis Ortega’s article “Rotary International: Make Service your Legacy” (page 36). Don’t forget to connect with us via social media. You can find us on Twitter (@FloridaVillager), Facebook (The Florida Villager), Instagram (@thefloridavillager), and Google + (The Florida Villager). You can also find an on-line version of our publication at www.TheFloridaVillager.com. Go Dolphins! Go Canes! And of course, Go Blue! Sincerely,

Around the County NEW MURAL AT PALMETTO MIDDLE SCHOOL

Experience Nail Care in a Whole New Way!

Palmetto Middle School welcomed Wynwood artist Dan Bondroff as he shared his time and talent with the school community. When the PTSA asked for help from the Bakehouse Art Complex, Bondroff immediately answered the call. In between traveling the country selling his art, Bondroff took the time to paint a mural on the wall in the PMS cafeteria. After drawing an Everglades scene on an entire wall, families from Palmetto Middle and students from the Learning Tree of Art helped Bondroff by painting in the details. “Bondroff has added beauty to our school while allowing our children to be a part of the process. Our community is truly thankful for his talent and generosity,” says PTSA President Linda Dwyer. Bondroff is looking forward to continuing his Everglades scene around the cafeteria and then onto other walls around the school. In addition to working with the Bakehouse Art Complex and at the Coconut Grove Art Festival, Bondroff currently teaches at The Learning Tree of Arts. To learn more about Dan Bondroff, visit danbondroff.com.

TRGS Foundation trgsfoundation.com BACKGROUND: After the death of Smith’s husband, Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Robert Glenn Smith, in 1997 Smith and her twin children were inspired to create an organization similar to the ones who came to their aid following the tragedy. “After years had passed, I just kept wanting to do something in his name; I wanted to leave a legacy for his children,” she says. “We were just so grateful that, since he was killed in the line of duty, the state took care of us. I just kept thinking about the families of officers who were killed while off-duty. What about those families?” ABOUT TRGS: Fostering awareness of the consequences of drunk driving (Smith’s husband, an anti-DUI crusader, was killed by a drunk driver), inspiring change and building support are all key components of the organization’s mission. Smith also takes pride in their desire to provide services, guidance and financial support to families who have lost a loved one due to a drunk driver. “What we do on a daily basis is go out in our community and spread the word about what we do and who we are,” she says. “I also go into the schools to see if there are any programs in place that I can support. I have students come to the DUI checkpoints that our law enforcement agencies put on to let them see the steps taken when a person is arrested for DUI.”

UPCOMING PLANS: On the immediate radar for Smith is the foundation’s 3rd Annual Golf Tournament on September 12 at Palmetto Golf Course. (“We have seen the golf tournaments getting bigger every year.”) Bigger picture plans include the continuation of Project “Be The Voice,” an initiative launched by the foundation and designed to educate and bring to the forefront, the raw, emotional trauma experienced by survivors of drunk driving tragedies. “It’s a project that I am working on to go into the schools and give a presentation on my journey as a survivor and tell my story. I want to really make a impact on the students and have them be a part of it,” she says. Looking forward, Smith also plans to continue working with partner organizations on larger fundraising efforts and eventually run programs out of her own community center. “Kids need a place to go and feel safe and keep busy.”

Students with little time to spare will get a leg up on homework with the introduction of Miami-Dade Schools’ new WiFi-on-the-go. The program, which launched this school year, provides mobile “hotspots” on District-owned school buses, so that students have additional time to study or research a project while on board. Additionally, M-DCPS will add two more programs to bus operations this year: Flex Stops, which will provide more than 800 students with transportation access to their Magnet programs at eight schools across the county; and GPS Bus Pilot, a school bus tracking system, which will give parents and students the ability to track the whereabouts of their assigned bus.

Fairchild Challenge Partners with NASA

F

OR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS PARTICIPATING IN THIS year’s Fairchild Challenge they’ll have to keep their feet planted firmly on the ground, but their heads up in space. For the first time, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden has partnered with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to allow South Florida students an opportunity to research and determine which edible plants might be suitable for growth in microgravity, aboard the International Space Station’s plant growth facility, Veggie. “NASA has been testing their vegetable production system, Veggie, to develop a plant growth system that could produce salad crops to be grown on the International Space Station,” says Fairchild Director of Education Amy Padolf. “We knew that with our network of more than 125,000 South Florida students from 275 public private and charter schools we could help NASA scientists test more varieties of crops and conduct many more trials.”

To that end Padolf reached out to NASA scientist Dr. Gioia Massa, who, in turn, invited Paolf and Fairchild Director Dr. Carl Lewis to Kennedy Space Center this past May to meet with NASA scientists and members of the International Space Station program to propose the integration of NASA research, to test crop option for growth on the International Space Station and beyond, into The Fairchild Challenge Program. “It was met with great enthusiasm,” says Padolf. Since then the organizations have been working closely to create and develop research protocols for the middle and high school students to experiment with crops in their classrooms. And that’s not all. “To ensure that all schools can participate, and that research is conducted equally throughout the trials, Fairchild will provide each school with a specially designed micro lab with all of the necessary tools and equipment to conduct their research beginning in September 2015,” says Padolf. Students will test factors that may influence plant growth, flavor and nutrition, with NASA using student data to determine which plant will make it to Veggie. In fact, on August 10 astronauts in the International Space Station livestreamed video of themselves harvesting and eating the first product grown in microgravity… red romaine lettuce. ““The Veggie team is excited to think that The Fairchild Challenge students will help to find new crops that will nourish astronauts in the future on the International Space Station and someday when we explore Mars,” said Dr. Massa. Launched in 2002, the Fairchild Challenge was designed as a competition that would appeal to students’ intellectual curiosity and currently involves more than 130,000 students from more than 300 elementary, middle and high schools (including global satellite partners). The partnership with NASA, says Padolf, is more than just a school year initiative. “We expect that this will be long term partnership that will produce incredible amounts relevant and useful data to support the work of NASA and inspire the students of South Florida,” she says. “This is the new face of science education.”

Westminster Christian Students Tackle Future Problems at International Competition BY TFV STAFF

E

E WESTMINSTER CHRISTIAN SCHOOL STUDENTS WERE SELECTED TO attend the Future Problem Solving (FPS) Program International competition at Iowa State University in June. Junior Sophia Gonzalez competed in the Global Issues Problem Solving Individual Competition, as a result of placing second at the State level. Sixth grade student Daniela Baez, who had the highest score at State in the junior level, and sophomore Brejah Upton, who placed fourth at State, competed in the MultiAffiliate Global Issues Problem Solving Competition (MAGIC). Preparing students for the future is at the core of Westminster Christian’s innovative curriculum. Starting in elementary school, students have the opportunity to participate in the Future Problem Solving Program, which stimulates critical and creative thinking skills and encourages students to develop a vision for the future. For nearly a decade, Westminster students have come out on top at the District and State level competitions. “The students had an incredible experience, honing their creative thinking and problem solving skills at this high-level competition,” said Pete Cabrera, WCS Superintendent. “Daniela’s team placed seventh in the world. What an incredible accomplishment for her, and for all of the Westminster competitors to be recognized at the international level.” The International Competition features four days of competitive problem solving, cooperative educational seminars, and social activities. More than 2,200 students and coaches from around the world, including countries like Great Britain, Australia, Qatar, Japan, attended FPS Internationals. This year’s topic for Global Issues Problem Solving was Intellectual Property. Founded in 1961, Westminster Christian School serves 1,225 students from preschool through 12th grade. Located on 31 acres in Palmetto Bay, Westminster’s academic program challenges learners with a rigorous curriculum from a Biblical worldview. It offers

FE AT UR E

BUILDING ON A

PASSION BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

F

OR CISCA CONSTRUCTION CEO FRANK BALLESTE WORKING HIS WAY up from apprentice to CEO of his own company wasn’t just a labor of love, it was a driving passion. “I love this business. I cherish it,” says Balleste. “I think about it every second of the day.” That love began 21 years ago, when apprentice Balleste, the son of Cuban immigrants, found himself pushing a broom on a construction site. After working his way up the ladder, the Miami native realized that his true dream was to work for himself. And so, FGF Construction was born (Balleste later changed the name of the company to Cisca –an ode to his grandmother, Francisca). One of the main reasons Balleste enjoyed creating the company was his ability to do things differently. The first change he made was to embark on staffing his fledgling company with a roster of plumbers, electricians, painters, carpenters and others who would minimize the need for Balleste to wait on subcontractors. By being able to self-perform the majority of the work, Cisca is able to control the quality, schedule, budgets and job safety, for each and every client, at all times. Balleste says that control also allows the Cisca team to give clients a true understanding of time frames and budget. “My motto is always ‘On time, on budget and no b.s.,” he says. And with past and current commercial clients such as Miami-Dade College, Department of Labor, Miami Dade County and Wal-Mart, it seems the motto is paying off. Today, Balleste has seen his workload return to a more residential focus, a turn of events that he says makes both him and his team happy. “I love it,” he says of residential work (the company does both ground-up work and remodels). “I like dealing with residential clients. You put yourself in their shoes and realize the project is almost like their child. I do it like I’m doing It for myself.” For Balleste, who works on projects across the country, that means everything from consulting with architects (they have one in-house) to picking paint colors and drapery. “That’s just another piece of the puzzle I can give the client,” he says. “We can sit down and see what the clients’ needs are, and go back and forth regarding specific needs of the project. We can bounce ideas off of each other and create solutions to challenges that may come up.” Listening to and working with clients starts at the very beginning of the Cisca process. After sending one of his carefully vetted project managers to the site, his team gets together to craft a plan. Once that plan goes

30

The Florida Villager

through the team process it ends up on Balleste’s desk, where he gives every estimate the ok before sending it to potential clients. And though it may not always be the cheapest, Balleste is confident it will be the most accurate. “I’m not the cheapest guy and I’m not the most expensive guy, but I’m the guy who’s going to do it right the first time,” says the CEO. “It’s best to pay an honest construction charge once and have it done right.” Part of doing it right, he says, is hiring the right people. As a result of that belief, all potential employees, no matter what the position, are given a 50-question test at the beginning of the hiring process. Question number one? “Can you read a tape measure?,” says Balleste with a laugh. He also compares the hiring process to “marrying into the team. I want an employee who is happy driving into work, knowing they have an ability to grow within the company and that they like their job.” Balleste is most proud of what he calls his “punch-out team,” aka- a three-man team who comes in to thoroughly inspect each job at the close of construction. “They have a 25-to-30 page list,” he says. “They’re looking at everything from drywall finish, paint millage, carpentry workmanship, and overall craftsmanship.” But not all projects are million-dollar listings. In fact, Balleste says he enjoys the smaller jobs as they not only remind him of his company’s humble beginnings (“When I was starting out I would have changed one shower tile if I had to.”) but also often lead to bigger and better things. “We did a bathroom in Pinecrest that four other contractors had attempted and couldn’t complete,” he says. “It took two weeks for our team to correct the issues previous contractors were having and to finalize the renovation. As a result, we received multiple jobs from the appreciative client.” For now, Balleste is enjoying what he calls “the much more personal” residential projects and spending time with his wife (he married his high school sweetheart) and two children. Says Balleste, “Contractors have a bad name. I like that I’m bringing a different breed of contracting to people now.” CISCA Construction is located at 11430 N Kendall Drive, Ste 111, Miami, FL 33176. A Woman in Pearls is One of a Kind BY JOHN O’ROURKE, OWNER, MONTICA JEWELRY

W

HAT DO JACKIE O., OPRAH WINFREY AND ANGELINA Jolie have in common? These ladies are all fans of wearing timeless pearl necklaces. Whether worn on a wedding day, to a business meeting or to the theater, pearls are second nature to the well-dressed woman. But did you know that since the early 1900s the most exciting new pearls in the world have been cultured? Yes, you heard right. While all pearls grow inside shells – saltwater pearls in oysters and freshwater pearls in mussels – natural pearls spontaneously produced in wild oysters have become virtually unavailable. That’s where cultured pearls step in. By now, I’m sure you’re scratching your head and wondering how on earth they do it? Well, a nucleus (usually a small round bead) is surgically implanted in the oyster or mussel. As a natural reaction, the shellfish produces nacre to coat the foreign substance. The oysters and mussels are taken to a protected habitat and carefully tended by pearl farmers. While the average cultivation period is one to three years, only half of the oysters nucleated will actually produce a pearl. Tack on the fact that less than five percent will be gem-quality and it’s obvious this pearl-producing business is tough work! It’s safe to say the end product is well worth the wait. From round and spherical Akoya pearls, colorful South Sea pearls, silver Tahitian pearls, irregular Keshi and Mabe pearls and fashion-forward freshwater pearls, there’s something for everyone. Now that you know where pearls come from, it’s time try some on for size. Play with different lengths, colors shapes and sizes because that’s what’s hot right now. Mix, match and layer pearls to create a unique look because, frankly, a woman in pearls is simply one of a kind.

Pearl Facts »» The pearl is the birthstone for June. »» In Roman mythology, Venus, the goddess of love and beauty, enters the world from a seashell just like a pearl. »» The pearl is traditionally the gift of love. It is also the symbol of health and longevity, often associated with purity and wisdom. »» A “pearl” is a term often used to describe something precious and beautiful, the best and most valued.

At Marino Eye Care, It’s Quality Over Quantity BY BROOKE BLOOM LAM

S

PECIALIZING IN ORTHOKERATOLOGY and Pediatric Vision Care, Dr. Vanessa Marino and Dr. Robert Grand are full service eye and vision care providers seeing patients with both eye emergencies as well as scheduled appointments. A visit to Marino Eye Care won’t provide you with a traditional optometrist appointment. Instead, the doctors perform lengthy comprehensive exams offering more than the typical assessments of simply reading a row of letters. Born and raised in Miami, Dr. Marino completed her undergraduate education at the University of Miami in 2003, and received her Doctor of Optometry degree at Nova Southeastern University in 2007. In 2008, she completed a residency in primary care and pediatrics/binocular vision. It was back in high school, however, when Dr. Marino first became attracted to the field after taking a position with a friend’s grandfather, Dr. Pablo Dr. Vanessa Marino (second from left) and her staff. exam that can take up to two hours, Dr. Marino prides Suarez, who was an Optometrist. “I needed a job,” Dr. Marino said. At first not knowing how much she’d enjoy herself on assessing issues that are not traditionally tested the practice, she soon developed a passion. “He was the at all offices. one who sparked the interest. I wanted to emulate him,” Offering services to patients as young as six months she explained. “He was the best teacher. He taught me old, Marino Eye Care has special diagnostic equipment so much.” that doesn’t require verbal feedback. At the younger ages, Dr. Suarez didn’t just show Dr. Marino that she wanted treatment is “more preventative at this point,” Dr. Marino to become an Optometrist. “He really showed me that I explains, in order to avoid a prescription that can cause

like to teach a lot,” Dr. Marino said. After completing her residency, Dr. Marino instructed and supervised optometry students at the Nova Southeastern University Pediatric Department in North Miami Beach until 2010. She now serves as an adjunct clinical professor for the New England College of Optometry, where students come to Miami to complete a three-month rotation to satisfy their internship requirements. In addition to giving back to other students, Dr. Marino has a special way with children which has helped her develop her pediatric specialty. Going beyond traditional letter recognition assessments, Dr. Marino explained how she assesses a child’s ability to focus and to track. “It’s not just about seeing 20/20,” Dr. Marino said. With an

a problem long-term. “We can go back and tweak when the patient is older,” she said. In addition to diagnostic exams, Dr. Marino also offers Orthokeratology to her patients. Orthokeratology, or “Ortho-K” as it is commonly called, is for myopic patients, those who can’t see far away. Kids under 18 years old typically aren’t candidates for Lasik surgery since their prescription can worsen over time. Ortho-K offers an alternative treatment that reshapes and flattens the cornea so that it doesn’t steepen over time, causing more problems. “It was made for the prevention of the progression of nearsightedness,” Dr. Marino said. The treatment consists of wearing special lenses at night while sleeping. Though it can take a few weeks to get used to

the feeling of the lenses, the treatment is not painful. Along with prevention, the lenses have a secondary benefit. “The lenses come off in the morning and you don’t need glasses for the rest of the day,” Dr. Marino explains. The added benefit of not needing glasses during the day, has inspired many adults to jump on the Ortho-K bandwagon. “For adult patients who don’t want surgery, Orthokeratology has an aesthetic benefit,” Dr. Marino says. She therefore sees adult patients for Ortho-K treatment as well. Aside from traditional eye-care services, many adults also come to Dr. Marino for her specialty in hard-to-fit contact lenses for patients with corneal diseases and ocular disfigurements. These lenses allow patients with special ocular conditions to attain vision that is far superior to ordinary soft contact lenses. A special machine called a Topographer helps Dr. Marino map out the front surface of the eye to detect diseases and to help her know for sure what contacts are needed. It provides information about the eye’s curvature, size, and thickness to assist in the fitting for specialty contact lenses. The Topographer also helps with the Ortho-K lens, and it “allows us to monitor the progress of a disease, changes in the cornea, and myopia progress, which would be impossible to see with a magnifying lens,”

Dr. Marino explains. Marino Eye Care strives to provide the finest in optometry services, from personal attention to exceptional professional care. Offering many services that can’t be found elsewhere, Marino Eye Care is Family Eye Care at its best. Marino Eye Care offers services in Orthokeratology, Scleral Contact fits, Pediatric Examinations, Comprehensive Eye Exams, Hard & Soft Contact Lenses, Glasses, Glaucoma Testing, Dry Eye Evaluation & Treatment, Treatment of Allergies & Eye Infections, Pre- and Post-Operative Care and more. Rotary International: Make Service Your Legacy BY LUIS ORTEGA, OWNER, SECURITY ARMS INTERNATIONAL

T

HEY SAY THAT SUCCESS IS FINDING SATISFACTION IN giving a little more than you take. The gift may be material like money, clothing, and books, but also intangible, like kindness, attention, and time. It turns out that to achieve that kind of success one needs not be Superman (like Mr. Christopher Reeves to whom the quote is attributed), but a person with a simple desire to better a fellow human being’s life. And what do you know, in a few of our Miami neighborhoods there are many such folk who successfully find satisfaction in giving. You may know one or two. They call themselves Rotarians. When asked to define Rotary International, I tell the story of a historically successful organization of 1.2 million international business and professional leaders, passionate about unifying resources, sharing best practices, and taking action to tackle the world’s greatest human concerns and local community challenges in an effective, responsible, and sustainable way. Decidedly, Rotarians are leaders who want to “make service their legacy”. Rotary District 6990 encompasses nearly fifty Clubs from Broward, Miami-Dade, and Monroe Counties, and the Grand Bahama Island. Locally, the Rotary Clubs of MiamiKendall, Coral Gables, Palmetto Bay, South Miami, and Pinecrest, actively channel their work through several avenues of service which encourage every Rotarian to find ways to improve the quality of life for people in their communities and to serve the public interest, promote international peace and understanding via overseas projects, and empower youth and young professionals through leadership development programs. Here is a very small sample of the good, continual work of a few local Rotary Clubs: »» Rotary Club of Miami-Kendall: Book bags for underprivileged children in Homestead, FL. Support of Safe Space Foundation’s Women’s Shelter. Nepal Earthquake Fundraiser. Co-Leadership of trip to India to vaccinate children against Polio. Honoring of WWII Tuskegee Airmen’s service. Youth leadership development program at Felix Varela High School (Interact Club). »» Rotary Club of Coral Gables: School Supplies Drive. Helicopter Golf Ball Drop for fight against Polio. Support for the Lotus House, a shelter for homeless women and children. Co-Leadership of Trip to India to vaccinate children against Polio. Project to furnish six apartments to house homeless veterans. »» Rotary Club of Miami-Dadeland-Pinecrest: Homeless Veterans fundraising project. Scholarships to Palmetto Senior and School of Advanced Studies students. Christmas presents to the C.O.P.E. Center, a school of choice for expecting or teenage parents and their children. Quest for Peace Art Exhibition. Support for Shoe Drive USA. »» Rotary Club of Perrine-Cutler Ridge-Palmetto Bay: Support for Wheelchairs for Kids. Scholarship Fund for Maggard Migrant Ministry. Contribution to the Children’s Hunger Relief Fund. Project for Rain Harvesting and Water Recycling at Ma’apilim Schools in Jerusalem, Israel. Thanksgiving Dinner project to feed 250 underprivileged families in West Perrine. Rotarians are your neighbors, your community leaders and some of the world’s greatest history-makers. We share a kinship with JFK, Winston Churchill, Bill Gates, Walt Disney, and Pope Francis, as well as with Carol Nobles (Kendall), Michael Kesti (Palmetto Bay), and Noelle Galperin (Coral Gables). Whether spreading literacy, eradicating Polio, making potable water, or promoting peace, every day, around the world, ordinary folk are accomplishing extraordinary things. Luis Ortega owns Security Arms International in Palmetto Bay and has been a Rotarian since 2007. He is the incoming President of the Rotary Club of Miami Kendall. To learn about how to join Rotary and find satisfaction in giving a little more than you take, please contact him at ceo@saiops.com.

R E AL ESTAT E TALK

We’re Going to Have a Good Time Then BY FRANK DEVALDIVIELSO

E

MPTY NESTERS ARE RIGHT THERE. THEY CAN GET their home back, have a naked room where they can feed their fish without the fear of kids or their friends being around; sleep in, or not; enjoy the yard, the pool, and the wonderful neighborhood. Ah, sunny south Florida is paradise, indeed! That is, until the kids move back in or it’s time to move mom and dad into the house, where they can be well cared for and loved. So, how does this impact our real estate market? Life changing events like these are what motivate people to sell, or buy. Take the empty nesters that get those ten seconds of “freedom.” What are their options? Sell quickly and move to a small home that is only comfortable for two? We’ve seen that with our customers J & D who downsized quickly only to find the two twenty-something year old sons at the door, looking for their room. J & D made them share a very small room and both boys have since moved out. Took time, but downsizing worked in their case! Come to think of it, he owns a fish tank! An attorney that specializes in estate planning told me that one in four people that are between the ages of 24-28 are living with their parents. That is driven by lack of gainful employment and the comfort of the parent’s home financially and physically. Are we going back to the days where the kids stay home until they marry? As parents which do you prefer having them in the house or helping them in their “independence” at another home? What is a good age to marry and really get your own home? This group represents future demand or in some cases pent up demand. Another couple invited her mom and dad into their home to take care of them in a loving environment. The elderly couple sold their house and moved in to be with the kids, and lived happily. There was some remodeling done to the home to welcome the grandparents in comfort and the cost of that may have been covered with the proceeds from the sale of the grandparents’ home. Win, win, and win. The grandparents win, the parents win, and the grandchildren win. Albeit, with some emotional and physical adjustments for all. Naked room, are you kidding? The empty nesters are in the very fortunate position of being the glue for both the elder and younger generations. If one is so blessed, that is. When the life changing events happen, that is when you really want to meet with your professional real estate agent. Your agents are very grateful to be in this market, day in and day out. to see you through the process of selling or buying a home. We understand that you and your life changing events are what drive the motivation to sell or buy. Our job is to help you transition to your new home by selling the property, helping you buy your new one, or both. If you’re planning on making a move please consider getting a monthly statement on the value of your home from your realtor. This may help you in your decision. For a free market update in your zip code, please sign up at MiamiFLTeam.com where you’ll receive a monthly update in your email.

Life After High School Band BY PENNY DANIELS

HAT DO YOU THINK THE FOLLOWING PEOPLE HAVE IN COMMON? »» Julia Roberts, Actress »» Drew Carey, Actor, Comedian »» Walter Payton, NFL Hall of Fame Running Back »» Neil Armstrong, First Man on the Moon »» Bill Clinton, Former U.S. President »» Stephen Tyler, Lead Singer, Aerosmith »» Aretha Franklin, Queen of Soul, Singer What are their similarities? Well, we know they are all famous, they are all celebrities, they have all made an impact in various ways, and we know their names are recognizable by several generations. But, are there other hidden similarities? Do they have similar family backgrounds? Do they have similar birth order – first born, middle child, or baby of the family? When we Googled this group of individuals and asked what they had in common, one answer on the list was they all played a musical instrument in their high school band. Who would have guessed that playing a musical instrument in high school would be a common thread amongst this high profile group of people? The instruments they played included the flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, drums, trumpet…to name just a few. But the instrument itself didn’t influence their life, it’s the lessons they learned as a band member that may have prepared them for their future careers. At a young age, these individuals along with fellow classmates, came together to make music. They had the opportunity to form friendships, learn to read and play music, learn how to work with others and be part of a team, learn how to practice with determination and commitment, and learn how to be a leader. They soon learned that band wasn’t just Former President Bill Clinton playing his saxophone. for geeks and the unpopular. Did their experience in their high school band help them become the celebrities they are today? Music is considered the universal language that touches people across the nation, connecting cultures, generations, families and individuals. Depending on your personal interest with playing an instrument, reading sheet music, or writing a poem and putting it to music, there are many options to explore in the world of music. Why not explore your options and try something new – write a poem, take music lessons, learn all there is to know about music. Visit the local music store in your hometown today and let the experts share their experiences with you. What could be better than talking to a local professional about your personal interests? Let them help you make music a bigger part of your life…the options are endless.

10 T HIN G S TO K N OW

Fitness Together BY ANDREA CARNIERO

S

UMMER HEAT HAVE YOU LOUNGING IN THE AIR CONDITIONING AND FILLING UP ON cool treats? With travel plans at a halt and school starting up there’s no time like the present to embark on a new fitness journey. Help has arrived in the form of Fitness Together Miami. The personal training service has studios in Coconut Grove and South Miami and offers private one-on-one training in a fully-equipped exercise suite. “I loved the one-on-one concept that the Fitness Together franchise offered because it allowed for a more results-oriented, intensive, focused workout,” says Fitness Together Miami owner Gabe Lamas. Here are 10 things to know about this local business.

1

Owner Gabe Lamas was naturally attracted to the fitness arena.

4

While studying for a Bachelor’s in Psychology, Lamas began working part-time as a trainer. “It was a natural job for me because I had a background in wrestling and always tried to stay in shape and eat healthy,” says Lamas. “I enjoyed helping others find a healthier lifestyle and I found it rewarding to help clients make positive changes in their life.”

2 3

Not all hard work has to take place in a gym. During his senior year Lamas found himself with the opportunity to open the Fitness Together Miami business and jumped at the opportunity… in no small part because of it’s non-traditional model. “The biggest challenge when working as a personal trainer in a public gym was the interference and distractions from the gym scene,” he says.

Though Lamas says he enjoys working with newbies, he also points out that experienced gym-goers are not immune to the occasional slip-up, making trainers a serious benefit to anyone looking to work out. “No matter your level of experience, when working out independently it can be easy to break form, choose easier exercises or simply shirk if you are not feeling motivated that day,” he says. “A good personal trainer provides the professionalism, accountability and motivation to get great results out of all your workouts.”

5

Their clients run the gamut. “We have a wide range of clients,” says Lamas. “From Division 1 college athletes to professionals looking to live longer and stay active and healthy, to stay-at-home moms who want more functional strength and endurance.” The one thing they do have in common though? “All our clients are serious about their health and fitness.”

6

Conveniently located in South Miami and Coconut Grove, Fitness Together Miami has helped countless clients get in the best shape of their lives. Please contact Gabriel directly at gabelamas@fitnesstogether.com or visit fitnesstogethermiami.com for more information.

40

The Florida Villager

09.2015

Even the most experienced fitness enthusiasts need a little guidance.

7 8

Safety is always a top priority. In addition to keeping clients motivated, Lamas says trainers can play an important role in keeping them safe. “It is far more beneficial to work with a trainer than working out independently - whether you are a beginner or a long-time gym veteran. Having the guidance of a personal trainer will greatly reduce your risk of injury and help you push your limits beyond what one would do themselves.”

Training changes the inside and the outside. Though Miami comes with its fair share of celebrity clientele, Lamas says it’s the health breakthroughs that excite him the most when it comes to success stories. “The most interesting and rewarding training stories are the clients of ours who have come to us due to a doctor prescription - high cholesterol and hypertension from a sedentary lifestyle are usually the most common issues,” he says, noting that he has seen drastic results after just a few months of training. “It is extremely rewarding to see these clients come to us and tell us how their blood pressure has dramatically lowered or that they have just received clearance to stop taking their statins for cholesterol.”

10

It’s a team effort. There’s a trainer for everyone in Lamas’ eyes and he retains a team of diverse backgrounds and personalities in order to make sure all clients stay happy and motivated. But, in the end, it’s always a group effort.. “Our team works together and collaborates on all our clients.”

It’s personal. All clients start with a Fitness Assessment that includes body-fat percentage, measurements, strength, cardio and flexibility tests. From there, Lamas and his team map out a program based on individual goals and test results. And it doesn’t end there. “The workout program that we create for them is tracked and logged by each trainer on every visit,” says Lamas. “Every six-to-eight weeks, the clients receive another Fitness Assessment to check their progress in quantifiable terms.”

Fitness Together doesn’t end when you walk out the door. Sure the workout is a big part of training, but without nutrition and post-workout guidelines success may not come as swiftly. To that end Lamas and his team equip clients with more than just the basics. Says Lamas, “We provide them with a meal plan, nutritional guidelines and an independent cardio prescription.”

There is no perfect time to start your fitness journey. Procrastination and justifications for not working out are common in Lamas’ world, but he insists that, as the saying goes, there is no time like the present. “The best piece of advice I can offer to someone considering a personal training program is to just go for it and dive right in,” he says. “The absolute best time to start changing your body and your life is right now.”

ResultsMD Leads Gastric Balloon Weight Loss in South Florida

T

HE NEWLY FDA-APPROVED GASTRIC BAL- Before loon procedure promises new hope in the obesity battle. The long awaited non-surgical procedure is finally available in the United States. ResultsMD Weight Loss is the first office-based surgery center in South Florida to offer the outpatient procedure. While new to the United States ORBERA is a weight loss device with more than 220,000 balloons distributed in over 80 countries. These numbers are supported by 230 published papers documenting the balloon’s clinical results. The ORBERA balloon is part of a two-stage program that uses the balloon to take up space in the patient’s stomach allowing for portion control as well as the sensation of fullness. The balloon is placed empty endoscopically (through the mouth) under a mild sedative in a 20 minute procedure. The balloon is filled with saline inside the stomach. Once the balloon is in place the patient receives nutritional support and coaching through the experts at ResultsMD Weight Loss. After six months through a second non-surgical outpatient procedure the balloon is deflated and then removed. The procedures will be performed by a board certified bariatric surgeon specifically trained by an FDA approved protocol. The patient is followed with the included nutritional behavior modification program for 12 months. A person of average height weighing 230 lbs can lose 30-40 lbs in the six month period. The procedure is not covered by insurance, but financing options

After

are available. “For many, the weight loss battle leaves patients with few options other than diet and exercise and invasive surgeries. We are very excited to offer a non-surgical option that bridges this gap. The balloon offers a great kick-start option for many patients where diets alone have failed,” said Dr. Amaryllis Pascual, Medical Director of ResultsMD Weight Loss. “This device in conjunction with our innovative nutritional follow up program provides a serious weapon in fighting the obesity epidemic.” As a plastic surgeon I am very excited with this new development. Many of my patients, both men and women, really need to lose weight before having plastic surgery, and for the obvious health reasons. Others have very specific goals for looking and feeling great: weddings, reunions, even divorce! This procedure takes the makeover to a whole new level. It allows me to give patients a new option for serious weight loss that works

without invasive surgery. Obesity is a chronic condition that tends to worsen over time. The gastric balloon procedure is an interventional tool that will help prevent the need for more invasive surgeries in the future. I urge people to “act now” before it is too late. The procedure will be available in September 2015. To set up your consultation call 305 661 1996 or go to reultsmd.com

OR MANY YEARS, ANIMALS WITH MISSING LIMBS AND other skeletal problems were expected to adapt on their own and do well. Three-legged dogs suffer from chronic neck and back pain, as well as arthritis. Humane euthanasia was considered to be the only option, since the dog was unable to hop around anymore. Rigid casts, used to immobilize a limb as part of a medical treatment, inevitably create wounds and sores. Dogs that are not eligible for surgery for the correction of a cranial cruciate stifle injury - or unable to afford it- were left to suffer from the chronic pain of an unstable joint. Today, we know that a correct modes of walking and moving will improve the physical and mental health of the pet, maximizing the overall quality of life. Thanks to a better understanding of animal physical fitness gained over the past 15 years, and with the creation of the Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation specialty within the veterinary field, our goal now is to improve the mobility and functionality of animals with disabilities through the use of mechanical appliances such as orthosis and prosthesis. Orthosis or “braces” are devices that complement an orthopedic surgery, and sometimes represent an alternative to the surgery itself. These devices attach to the affected body part of the animal to support, immobilize, align, or correct a deformity. The orthotics have hinges to promote normal range of motion and prevent muscle atrophy. An example is a custom brace to support a stifle instability caused by a cranial cruciate injury. A veterinary prosthesis, on the other hand, replaces a missing limb or a section of the limb to facilitate a pet’s mobility. The current consensus in veterinary medicine is to avoid amputation of the entire limb if part of it can be saved and adapted with a prosthesis. It is the job of a certified veterinary rehabilitation therapist (a licensed veterinarian certified in rehabilitation or a licensed physical therapist certified in animal rehab and under the direct supervision of a veterinarian) to provide orthotic/prosthetic specific rehabilitation therapy, so that the pet can acclimate to the device, and learn to use it. As veterinary medicine evolves, so do the expectations to for our pets’ quality of life. It is not acceptable to allow pets to live an unnecessarily disabled life or to suffer early euthanasia for conditions that can now be managed with medical devices and rehabilitation therapy. Remember to educate yourself on the latest medical technologies and explore all of your options before making a medical decision that could profoundly impact your pet’s life.

ESTLED BETWEEN MONOLITHIC RED ROCKS AT THE ENTRANCE TO Boynton Canyon, long considered sacred ground by Native Americans, is The Enchantment Resort, a 70-acre retreat surrounded by the natural splendor of the Coconino National Forest. Opened in 1987 as a tennis facility, The Enchantment Resort has transformed over the years into something that can be summed up in one word -magical. From the time you round a bend and are faced with the awe-inspiring red rocks, to the moment you enter the front gate where the guard smiles and says, “Welcome back!” you suddenly realize that you have passed through something akin to Heaven’s Gate. The quiet that envelops the resort, coupled with the peacefulness exuded by the staff puts guests in an amazing state of mind and body. As I checked in, my itinerary was waiting along with a glass of refreshing cucumber water. My accommodations could not have been more inviting. As I unpacked, there was a knock at the door and an attendant delivered a small plate of chocolate covered strawberries (which I promptly devoured). Every morning when I pulled back my drapes, the view of the red rocks mesmerized me and the daily newspaper accompanying a basket of iced orange juice greeted me when I opened my door. At bedtime, a bottle of water and a card with an Indian quote wished me goodnight as I slipped under the down comforter. In addition to the standard rooms, there are casitas that offer the romance of a fireplace. The resort offers two restaurants and a pool bar, with the pool and hot tub open 24 hours a day along with food and drink service. As darkness overtakes the red rocks, the oversized fire pit is a big draw for drinks and good conversation. The Enchantment has no outside lighting so guests can appreciate the vastness of the evening sky unencumbered. Flashlights are provided in the guestrooms so one can venture out into the darkness to sit in the hot tub and wish upon the many twinkling stars while sipping on a famous Prickly Pear Margarita. Mii Amo is a destination spa on the grounds of the resort. Serene and spiritual is what you feel throughout your stay there. It has the Crystal Grotto where meditations take place daily and unparalleled pool service at both of their pools. The spa menu is pretty extensive, so I was hard pressed to choose but I eventually settled on a Dosha Wrap and a Psychic Massage that not only felt amazing physically, but also lifted my soul to new heights. The concierge, my new best friend, also had arranged other adventures for me. An early morning hike brought me up close and personal to the beauty that surrounds the resort. There are many hiking trails to explore alone or with a guide, and you can’t help but think as you walk among the Manzanita, Crucifixion Thorn and Yucca how the breathtaking scenery looks like a backdrop from an old western movie. Other activities on my agenda included taking a kayak trip with Sedona Adventure Tours down the Verde River, equipped with water guns and a stop at a local vineyard for a wine tasting. A 4:15 am balloon trip with Red Rock Balloons left me speechless as the sun rose from behind the red rocks to welcome yet another magical day. By far, the most soul-searching experience I had was with Feather Jones. She led me on a hike up Cathedral Rock to the top of the vortex where we sat and listened to the sound of silence, my thoughts only broken by the call of a canyon bird and the music from her flute carried by the wind. As I tucked the last night’s Indian quote into my suitcase I knew that The Enchantment had touched me in a way that would linger long after my plane touched down in Miami. Even now, if I close my eyes and still my breathing, I can hear the red rocks calling me back to a place I now call home. Food is the Foundation of Life for Your Dog BY TAMI MAIER

LOVING PET CARE IN YOUR HOME OR MINE

F

OOD IS THE FOUNDATION OF LIFE. THIS IS THE MOST BASIC PRINCIPLE. I know it seems strange to think of food as medicine and to imagine that those expensive, colorfully bagged kibbles and canned pet food pates are destroying the health of your dog, but the only way to great pet health depends upon nutritional enlightenment on our part as the dog owner. Actually, food as medicine is not a new concept. Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, expressed this view 2,500 years ago. Basically his view was that true health requires a balance of body, mind and environment, and that disease is caused by a disharmony in one or more of these areas. The power of food to heal disease is dependent on the quality of food, and that is why every recipe you make for your dog should include the freshest, most environmentally safe ingredients you can buy or grow. Be conscious of everything you put in your dog’s mouth or on his/her body. I wouldn’t give anything to my pets that I wouldn’t eat or use myself. When feeding your dog, ingredients are not the only important thing. Clean bowls and and a clean eating area are imperative as well. Get your dog accustomed to eating only at mealtimes; this means trying to stay away from free feeding. Your dog will have a better appetite and more vitality. Ending free feeding will also help an overweight pet to slim down more naturally and prevent your dog from getting bored with its food. Dogs should be fed twice a day and food should be removed between meals (with homemade, high quality food, dogs will typically finish in a few minutes). You can make exceptions for sick or elderly dogs and puppies, which may eat smaller, more frequent meals, perhaps three or four times a day. Sometimes a dog owner is locked into the one-meal-a-day mind-set. Oftentimes we believe feeding less, in amount, duration, and frequency, helps our dogs lose weight. This is not true. Feeding your dog too little or too seldom will slow your dog’s metabolism and can lead to weight gain. Achieving an ideal weight for your dog is less about quantity than about the quality of the ingredients and the body’s ability to assimilate as well as eliminate the food. When your dog is done eating remove the bowl. Leaving food down all day is actually against the laws of nature. Dogs bodies need to rest, have mini fasts, and not be in digestive mode all the time. Nature intended animals to work hard for their meals and not have food available all day. On the domestic flip side, dogs who casually stroll to the food bowl thought the day to eat overly processed dog foods may show tendencies toward maldevelopment, constipation, weight gain because of slower metabolism, poor skin condition, as well as many other problems. Making nutritional changes in one area will often spark a healthier change in another. Unfortunately this is not a one-size fits all program. As you start feeding your dog whole, healthy foods carefully observe your dog’s changing symptoms and make gradual modifications to their diet as needed. Your dog may initially prefer foods with salt, sugars, or other flavor enhancers, but the elimination of those unhealthy additives will promote obvious, exciting changes in their physical and emotional well being. With any changes made to your dog’s diet please check with your veterinarian first to make sure that the diet changes are appropriate for your dog. Rebuilding Self-Esteem BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ, DIVORCE COACH

not yours? Write the emotions you feel when you think of those beliefs, because it is your emotions that continue to give those beliefs life. Remember, you can have your emotions but not become entrapped by them. Keep track of what triggers those emotions and then your beliefs during the day. Immediately put the situation in perspective. See that it is an old belief system that has raised its ugly head in the present. The last step is to write down all your positive beliefs about yourself and the times you exhibited those. Take inventory with blunt honesty. The things that are true, work on them. The things that aren’t, throw out with your ex.

O

NE OF THE TRAVESTIES of a divorce is self-esteem. It seems to walk out the door along with your soon to be ex. It hits equally as hard to both genders though it exhibits itself in different ways. It is something if left unchecked will have devastating effects on all aspects of your life. Your self-esteem is you as an entirety; it’s how you view yourself as a whole, and it’s not just about looks. Do you tell yourself that you are a failure, unattractive, a sexless creature, a lousy cook that couldn’t get it right in the kitchen, a horrible mother because you don’t have the emotional energy to get the laundry done, and not much of a woman because you couldn’t keep your man? How will you ever get self-acceptance when your only thoughts about yourself are negative and self-defeating? We are what we think and say, and not what others think and say about us. What you believe to be so, the universe will always find a way to make it so. Stop believing the ‘stories’ your ex told you and commit to ‘seeing’ how you truly are. Cool Metal Roofing for a Hot City BY FRANK ISTUETA, OWNER, ISTUETA ROOFING

H

ERE IN OUR HOT MIAMI CLIMATE, ROOFING contractors and homeowners are changing the way they select roofing materials based on energy efficiency. Did you know that a roof can wield the greatest impact on the energy performance of a home? Cool metal roofs – which have been designed to reflect more sunlight and absorb less heat than a standard roof can help reduce energy consumption by lowering cooling loads. Lightly colored, more reflective roofs can save up to 40 percent in cooling energy. Just as wearing lightcolored clothing can help keep you cool on a sunny day, cool roofs use solar-reflective surfaces to maintain lower roof temperatures. Cool metal roofs are ideal for Florida’s hot and humid climate, as they are most effective in areas where temperatures and air conditioning use are high. By reducing heat gain through the roof surface, cool roofs decrease air conditioning use that leads to 10-to-30 percent in energy savings at the hottest part of the day, when energy demand is at its peak. By 2030, our nation’s electricity demands will be 45 percent greater than today. (Source: Nuclear Energy Institute.) And according to recent studies, if cool roofs were installed nationwide, we would save an astonishing

$1 billion in cooling costs, with $20 million in the Miami/ Ft. Lauderdale area alone. Coatings and finishes available today certify metal as a recognized cool roof product. In addition to being energy efficient, metal roofing is recognized as a sustainable building material for several other environmental reasons. Being a “green” building product makes it a popular choice for Miami homeowners. Cool metal roofing is available unpainted, with ovenbaked paint finishes, or with granular-coated surfaces. This family of roofing can achieve solar reflectance of over 70 percent. Reflected solar energy allows the roof surface to remain cooler, which means less heat is transferred into your home.

If You Avoid Maintenance Now...You’ll Pay Up Later! Whatever type of roof you have, it will deteriorate over time if you neglect to maintain it. Almost all of us regularly maintain and clean our vehicles in order to avoid costly problems and to keep them looking and running as best as possible for as long as possible; so shouldn’t we do the same for the roofs over our heads? Regular inspection leads to early detection of possible roof problems

(that can become more costly later), protection of your valuable assets and maintenance of a safe environment for your family. Since your home represents a sizable investment (probably one of the largest you’ll make in life) - and because your roof plays such an important role in protecting you and your family - you need a professional roofing contractor who will inspect the roof and provide proof, such as photographs, of any problem areas. They should also provide a description of how the problem will be fixed, how long the repair/replacement will take and how much it will cost. A good contractor will also make recommendations to increase the lifespan of the roof. Bottom line: Proper roof maintenance – performed by an experienced professional – can save you from future heartaches, future expenses and provide you with peace of mind that one of your most valuable assets remains in a healthy condition.
