CTOBER IS HERE, AND SO BEGINS ONE of our favorite times of the year! Before you know it, Halloween will be upon us, and everywhere you look you’ll see candy, costumes, and pumpkins. Whether you’re out partying, trickor-treating, or staying in to give out candy, we wish everyone a happy and safe Halloween. There are many fun events taking place this month, so be sure to check out our Events Calendar (page 8) and enjoy what our wonderful city has to offer. October is also Breast Cancer Awareness month, and we encourage everyone to think pink! Staying with this theme, we invite you to read about Beth Armstrong, this month’s featured Philanthropist (page 16). A breast cancer survivor herself, she is fiercely dedicated to raising money for the organization Race for the Cure. And don’t miss the special feature ‘Falling for the Season’ (page 26) to celebrate the fun of Fall with everything from holiday tips to culinary comforts. Also be sure to check out this month’s ‘It’s Their Business’ (page 36) to learn more about Kendall Regional Medical Center’s Burn Center, an all-inclusive specialized treatment center that celebrated its third anniversary this year. Lastly, if you’ve been curious about the latest trends in window coverings, don’t miss ‘5 Questions’ with Rick Diesmone, owner of Rick & Nancy’s Window Fashions (page 46). Don’t forget to connect with us via social media. You can find us on Twitter (@FloridaVillager), Facebook (The Florida Villager), Instagram (@thefloridavillager), and Google + (The Florida Villager). Around the County COUNCIL CONVERSATIONS IN PINECREST

Experience Nail Care in a Whole New Way!

Councilmember Cheri Ball kicked off a new initiative in the Village of Pinecrest on September 23, with the first of five “Council Conversations.” The open forum discussions will use a specific topic to start conversations and offer an open mic to share, ask questions and offer suggestions for the Village. The first topic “What brought you to the neighborhood?” will be followed by conversations at Village locations such as Coral Pine and Evelyn Greer Parks with councilmembers McDonald, Ross and Kraft as well as Mayor Lerner.

STEVEN SOTLOFF MEMORIAL GARDEN OPENS Pinecrest Gardens commemorated the opening of the Steven Sotloff Memorial Garden on September 12 with an open-to-the-public ceremony honoring the slain journalist and Pinecrest native. The garden is centered on three water features, a long-time tenet of garden design, often referring to heaven, Earth and man, with the water features built to show harmonious yet quiet water movement, using travertine stone as the base stonework according to Village spokesperson Michelle Hammontree. Home Depot acted as a principal partner in the memorial, with Sotloff’s parents helping to choose the elements, plants and colors that would allow for meaningful reflection.

Respect Yourself. Be Drug Free is the theme of the 2015 Red Ribbon Week, taking place October 23 to 31, 2015. As part of the pledge to be drug free, the middle school students will acknowledge the dangers of drug use and abuse, respect themselves and be drug free, and spread the word to family and friends about the importance of being healthy and drug free. Activities that will be taking place at Palmetto Middle School to bring awareness of this campaign are show your red ribbon pride (wear something red w/ your uniform), sock it to drugs (wear your favorite socks), put a cap on drugs (wear your favorite hat) and shade out drugs (wear your favorite sunglasses). School Principal Jesus Gonzalez strongly supports the campaign by encouraging “students to respect themselves enough to say no to drugs.” Mr. John Witty of the South Miami Hospital Addiction Treatment and Recovery Center, will be speaking to the eighth graders about the dangers of drugs. He will be sharing his painful story about how a drunk driver took the life of his daughter and emphasizing the importance of living a responsible drug free life.

Fighting Like a Girl BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

NAME:

Beth Armstrong ORGANIZATION:

Race for the Cure raceforthecure.org BACKGROUND: For Armstrong, raising money for breast cancer research isn’t just a cause; it’s a personal mission. The 40-year-old mother of three boys was, herself, diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma at 36. “I worked full-time, was a wife, and mother,” says Armstrong. “I did not have time for cancer, cancer was not in my game plan.” Motivated by her husband, friends and, most importantly, her sons, Armstrong decided she had two options. “I learned I had two choices – I could fall down crying every day or I could get up, put my gloves on and ‘fight like a girl,’” In 2011 she underwent a double mastectomy with immediate reconstruction and never looked back. “I decided then in my ‘pink journey’ that my story would be an open book,” she says. ABOUT HER WORK: For the last four years, Armstrong has been Team Captain for FPL’s Turkey Point Power Plant (where she works as a Nuclear Plant Records Technician) at the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale Race for The Cure. With her guidance, she and her colleagues have raised nearly $20,000 for the organization. Additionally, Armstrong plans and hosts an annual week-long Pink Passion Week at Turkey Point that includes fundraisers such as bake sales, safety fairs, ice cream socials, parking spot raffles and fishing tournaments. UPCOMING PLANS: Seeing herself as “fortunate” to have had a friend who had been through treatment before her, Armstrong has dedicated herself to being that friend to others dealing with the disease. “I feel that if I can reach one person who would not have otherwise had a mammogram, if I can give one cancer patient hope, if my story reaches one person that can identify and know that they too can fight and win that Survivor title, then sharing my story has been worth it.” For more information on Race for the Cure and upcoming events visit raceforthecure.org.

N NOVEMBER 7, ALL THE COLORS OF THE rainbow will sprinkle down on participants of Palmetto Bay’s inaugural Twilight Color Run 5K and Concert to benefit Miami Palmetto Senior High, but for now event organizers are concentrating on just one – collecting enough green to make the fundraising aspect a success. “It’s going to be a fantastic community event for the whole family,” said Anna Hochkammer, MPSH PTSA president. “It’s untimed, so the primary purpose is fun. People of all ages can enjoy running or walking the route, then stay and enjoy the food and live music afterward.” Beginning and ending at Palmetto Bay Park, participants will be sprayed with the same type of colored powder used in the Indian holiday celebration of Holi as they continue along the route, painting them in a kaleidoscope of color by the finish line. The Village of Palmetto Bay is putting on the event for Palmetto High’s benefit, with all proceeds going toward creating a state-of-the-art weight training facility for use by the 1,200 students in PE classes and on athletic teams. The community event school fundraising partnership is a first for the Village of Palmetto Bay. “It is a natural fit for the Village of Palmetto Bay to use of our parks to support our schools,” said Palmetto Bay Mayor Eugene Flinn. “We’re the Village of

Parks, and that and our great public schools are the biggest reasons people move to Palmetto Bay.” The Village of Palmetto Bay is administering the event and waiving all fees associated with use of their park, roadways and police support, a considerable in-kind donation to offset the costs of the event. But in order to raise the $15,000 needed for the school’s weight room, the PTSA needs local businesses to help offset the other event expenses. Various sponsorship recognition packages are available according to level of donation. “Local business should want to participate,” said Mayor Flinn. “Their customers and future customers are the parents and students at Palmetto High. If you’ve invested your business in the area, you need to help ensure the success of your community and one of the best ways you can do that is to help out your neighborhood schools.” Current Gold Level Sponsors are The Corradino Group and Williamson Automotive. MAPFRE Florida Insurance is a Silver Level Sponsor, and Fit2Run in Dadeland Mall is an in-kind sponsor of the race packets.

All proceeds will pay to re-equip Miami Palmetto Senior High School’s weight training program.

Businesses and individuals interested in participating in this event should contact Anna Hochkammer, PTSA President for sponsorship opportunities (ahochkammer@ gmail.com). Registration for the event is available via palmettohighptsa.org.

PHS Boasts 13 National Merit Semi-Finalists; PES Gets Green Recognition BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

2016 National Merit Semifinalists!

P

ALMETTO SENIOR HIGH IS BOASTING 13 National Merit Semi-finalists this year as the National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced semifinalists in early September. The Corporation named approximately 16,000 high school juniors out of 1.5 million student from more than 22,000 high schools across the U.S., all of whom took the 2014 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest- scoring entrants in each state. “The class of 2016 has surpassed all of our expectations,” said Palmetto Senior High School Principal Victoria Dobbs via email. “Not only are they academically brilliant but also very civic minded individuals! These are the kids you want to be role models for your children and they are living right here in your own neighborhood. Furthering the public school pride was the fact that 10 of the 13 qualifying students (who will now go on to compete for for some 7,400 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million) came from Palmetto Middle School. “Palmetto High School is an academic powerhouse,

Benjamin Bao Kayla Buttafuoco Logan Kraus Jeffrey Li Rosalie Luo Jaewon Moon Daniel Nepomechie Ross Rosen Juan Villacreses Nathan Wasserman William Yang Bo You Claire Zuo

but there is real depth and breadth to our students, too,” said PTSA President Anna Hochkammer. “Each and every one of them is a shining star. As a parent, my heart bursts with pride for them and for their parents.” The winning extends to the elementary level this month as well, as Pinecrest Elementary was awarded top honors for their ongoing commitment to green initiatives. The school received recognition from not only the Fairchild Challenge, but from local nonprofit Dream in Green as a Top 10 Finalist - Green Machine Award; First Place - Building Leaders Through Fundraising Challenge and the Eco Summit Award - Eco Summit Earth Day. “Teaching students to be environmentally aware will help develop a generation prepared to make decisions for the future’s challenges,” said Principal Lynn Zaldua.

Over 1.5 million high school juniors take the PSAT in the fall of their 11th grade year. National Merit Semifinalists had scores that placed them in the top 1% of the nation. Each of these brilliant Panthers will now have the opportunity to compete next spring for one of 7,400 National Merit Scholarships worth a total of over $32,000,000.

Let them be way ahead of their class.

HDE Hosts Internet Safety Workshop

CORPO YOGA Studio

BACK to YOGA

BY MONICA SMITH

P

ARENTS WERE GIVEN HOMEWORK AFTER THE RECENT HOWARD DRIVE Elementary Internet Safety Workshop, which was held on September 15th, 2015, directly after its first evening PTA meeting. Their homework? To monitor all Internet use and manage their children’s use of digital devices. “It sounds like common sense, however, you’d be surprised at how unaware parents are when it comes to their children and Internet use,” said Deanna Dalby, HDE Principal. As one of the first schools in the district to have its own app, the school made a bold move last year to be digitally ready for its families. This year, the school’s PTA made a decision to host the Internet Safety Workshop to help advocate for its families; to get them “digitally ready,” for the rest of the year. The school will continue its BYOD (bring

your own device) days, where students do web research and access coding websites and apps that help them learn math facts and strengthen reading. “We definitely want our students to use devices, but responsibly and safely,” stated Principal Dalby. Staggering statistics, from the Pew Research Center show that 92% of teens (13-17) use a device daily; 24% go on “constantly”; and on average, each teen sends and receives 30 texts a day—but it’s not just teens using devices now. “It seems like more and more children, earlier than ever, are coming to school with devices, and now, before the teen years, is the time to teach them about being safe and sharing information online,” explains Rebecca Shearer, Ph.D., University of Miami Associate Professor of Psychology, Child Division, and parent of three students at HDE. “There is so much research on both sides of the aisle on Internet, social media, and device use—parents really have to do their homework, use their parental and privacy controls and monitor and manage the way their children use devices.” The evening’s speakers included Palmetto Bay Police Officers Peter Judge and Patience Glasko, and Carmen Centeno and Louise Gestwicki from the Miami Dade County Library System. CodeKids Camp, a summer camp for computer programming, also sponsored the evening. “You just have to know what your kids are getting into,” said Officer Judge. “Have access to all of their accounts and use parental controls.” Michelle Castro, HDE parent of a fifth grader, feels that with the rapid pace of technology, parents of elementary school children are facing one of the most exciting times in history. “It’s also scary because everything is new to us,” she said. But there are safe options, said Carmen Centeno, including using the Miami-Dade Public Library System portals and apps, which offer children protection from potentially inappropriate websites, etc. “It was an informative workshop,” said Judith Walton Wormull, HDE parent of a 5th grader. “I am glad HDE decided to do this—our kids are definitely smarter than us when it comes to devices.” In concert with the workshop, and to help parents, HDE PTA staff also published an original article called “Untangling Wired Children” on its website newsletter blog. “PTA is not just a fundraising organization, it is also a community advocate and we care about our families,” said Nicole Connolly, HDE PTA President.

HE OVERWHELMING PRIDE OF FINALLY BEING A HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR makes the countdown to graduation and the next chapter of my life much more exciting, but before I get the chance to jump into all of the “lasts” that this year has in store for me, a long list of prospective schools and their lengthy applications sit on my desk waiting for me to complete. College applications consume the lives of first semester seniors. The pressure is on, deadlines creep up, and stress becomes inevitable. This unknown idea of college becomes everything, and the topic becomes a main focus of every conversation. Late nights turn into researching acceptance rates and weekends with friends have become coffee dates filled with moral support and companionship... while writing application essays. I find myself spending hours at a time answering a long list of questions, editing my full resume, and scrambling through documents to prove residency for in-state tuition. While I have already been actively participating in this process for a few months now, I know that I still have much more ahead of me. For awhile, the days will feel extremely short, and the deadlines will show up sooner than I ever thought possible. My free time will continue to consist of writing, editing, and rewriting a wide variety of essays, answering the same questions over and over, and taking my final standardized tests to be in range for my choice schools. The stress never seems to take a break, and it feels like everyday I have a longer list college related things to do. Even with all of the pressure that I currently have, I know that I truly need to take a breath and realize that I have such amazing things ahead of me. The college application stress is just for now, and once it ends, I know my next step will be enduring bittersweet times of acceptance and rejection. As for senior year, I get the chance to experience many “lasts” of high school and moments with my friends that I will remember forever. Right now, this whole process seems to be never ending, but I know that when I finally receive that first acceptance letter, and the opportunity to choose the place I plan to spend the next four years, I can sit back, relax and make the most of my senior year. Jessica Rolnick is a senior at Miami Palmetto Senior High School.

Congrats to Coach Ellis, Betsy and Lily! You all make Palmetto Bay proud. Our Educational Advisory Committee (EAC) is hitting on all cylinders, with a new Chair, and new appointee, the 5 member EAC Team is working well together to bridge our Palmetto Bay Parks and local schools to bring Afterschool programming to our village. There is more good news to follow in future editions. Our Parks programming at Thalatta continues to sell out. The inaugural “Murder Mystery” dinner theater was a huge success. Check the website and get your tickets for our Halloween (over 21) night event at Thalatta. Finally, be cautious when driving around Coral Reef Drive beginning in early October. A sorely needed drainage project will be starting and will cause major interruption to traffic. We are working to keep interruptions to a minimum, but significant traffic issues will be develop. Please be patient. Please continue to keep me up to date with what is important to you. Tutti Bambini Events Presents…

Lisa Hochstein Baby Shower - Location: Hochstein Residence Photography Credit: Tutti Bambini Photography

T

UTTI BAMBINI EVENTS IS PART OF A UNIQUE concept developed by Tutti Bambini owner, Lourdes Leon-Vega. Geared to work with all events and budgets, Tutti Bambini Events’ creative team provides clients with ideas and planning services to make their dream event come true. Whether you’re welcoming a baby, newly engaged, having a gathering just for dads, or it’s baby’s first birthday; Tutti Bambini will be the place to create these memories. Far from cost prohibitive, Event Coordinator Monica Pardo has experience working with varied budgets and occasions, creating memorable events that make a lasting impression on guests. Peek at their offerings online at www.tutti-bambini.com or on Facebook and Instagram at @TuttiBambiniEvents. “People think it’s cost-prohibitive, but they are always surprised to find out how accessible it really is,” says Leon-Vega. “I always say ‘Just call us!’ You will be surprised to find how feasible it is to host an event that does not break the bank.” The events division is just one aspect of the full-service

experience envisioned by Leon-Vega many after the birth of her second child. Due to her limited mobility throughout the pregnancy, Leon-Vega found there were no Miami based companies catering to the various needs of expectant mothers, as well as an absence of certified baby planners that could help with her impending arrival. With so many products and brands on the market to choose from, she made it her mission to not let other mothers experience her same situation. Leon-Vega decided to provide new and expectant mothers with vital information paired with only the best baby products available on the market. Tutti Bambini now offers certified experts, as well as certified baby planners who are available to deliver more than 15 classes and assist customers at the store or by appointment. At Tutti Bambini, “Mom’s the Word” — meaning from preparing one’s nursery, to bringing home baby to breastfeeding workshops to losing stubborn baby weight to photography services — this premium concierge service has moms-to-be covered.

Also from Tutti Bambini: TUTTI BAMBINI MATERNITY & NEWBORN The chore (does she mean core?) brand, Tutti Bambini’s Maternity & Newborn division provides the services, products, and education parents need to raise healthy families. They strive to live up to their motto for new and expectant parents everyday – “Everything Baby, Total Peace of Mind.”’ In today’s fast-paced, time-sensitive world, they understand that parents want to find what they need and get it to their homes as quickly as possible – whether it is a product, service or information. At Tutti Bambini Maternity & Newborn division, clients find the best baby and maternity gear and products from the most trusted brands in the market; the most up-to-date information on product developments and recalls; educational classes on all areas of conception, delivery, child development and child safety; and extensive concierge services.

TUTTI BAMBINI KIDS Bringing high fashion at unbeatable prices, the store carries a wide variety of lines to meet the needs of the families they serve, including a variety of organic clothing lines for infants. The store is also able to grow with their clients, having created a Kids department that provides apparel and accessories from newborn to tween sizes.

Colored Gems Make a Fashion Statement BY JOHN O’ROURKE, OWNER, MONTICA JEWELRY

C

OLORED GEMSTONES OFFER AN AMAZING RANGE of hues that will enhance any look or style. The sparkle and setting will add an exclamation point to your look. While precious gems are desirable for upscale events, you can have a million dollar look for work or travel for a mere pittance with superb amethysts, opals, blue topaz or rhodolite garnet. It’s always fun to wear beautiful jewelry and colored gemstones are meant to be enjoyed by all! Traditional gemstones are ruby, emerald and blue sapphire. Because of their lasting appeal and distinguished history, ruby, emerald and sapphire are more valuable than other colored gemstones. Generally, ruby and emerald are also priced higher than a comparable quality sapphire due to rarity. For a one-carat stone of average to good quality in the varieties in this category, you can expect to pay between $250 and $10,000 per carat. Of course, truly fine gems will cost more.

The new classics include gemstones that are rising stars, including tanzanite, tourmaline, aquamarine, imperial topaz, and tsavorite garnet. These gemstones are sometimes available in standard sizes, but you really should look at some fine larger single stones to see why they have so many fans. Gems in this category range between $50 to $1,000 per carat for an average to good quality one carat stone. An example of this is tsavorite which can easily reach $3,000 per carat. Connoisseur gems are gemstones that have a more specialized market because they are more rare. These gemstones include black opal, jadeite, pink topaz, chrysoberyl cat’s-eye, fancy colored sapphires, and extraordinary stones like demantoid garnet and alexandrite. These gemstones are highly sought after and prices can range from $250 to $5,000 per carat. Although, fine quality alexandrite can command upwards of $10,000 per carat. Collector’s gems are not readily available in large quantities, but you can get a lot of bang for your buck with some costing just several hundred dollars per carat. The more popular stones in this category are spinel, zircon, moonstone and other beryls. Morganite is exceptionally popular at the moment, possessing lovely pinkish tones which looks great with rose gold and diamonds. There are so many other affordable gemstones that combine great color with surprisingly reasonable prices and excellent availability. Consider amethyst, white opal, citrine, ametrine, peridot, rhodolite garnet, blue topaz, iolite, chrome diopside, kunzite, andalusite, and many ornamental gemstones such as lapis lazuli, turquoise, onyx, chrysoprase, nephrite jade, and amber. While the prices for these gemstones will vary with size and quality, they would be considered among the most affordable to many. Dr. Carlos Medina and some of The Burn Center staff.

Kendall Regional Offers The Best in Burn Care BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

A

SK DR. CARLOS MEDINA ABOUT HIS MIAMI PLASTIC SURGERY PRACTICE and, for most, the mention will conjure up images of glitz and glamour. They would be wrong. Medina, a Puerto Rico native, is one of four doctors overseeing Kendall Regional Medical Center’s Burn Center, an all-inclusive specialized treatment center that celebrated it’s third anniversary this year. “I’m the opposite of the typical plastic surgeon,” says Medina. “For me, that’s maybe one percent of my practice. The remaining part is all reconstructive, hand trauma or burn patients… those types of cases.” Opened in 2012, the Burn Center was borne of need, when Kendall Regional (a trauma center since 2011) noticed an influx of burn cases and saw an opportunity to offer the most advanced level of care to both inpatient and outpatient adults, children and infants. “People think that when you are burned the surgery is the toughest part – but it’s all the things that come after the surgery that are the most important,” says Medina. “Having a nurse who knows how to treat those types of wounds, having the right physical therapy, support services… those are the things that make the Burn Center unique. The surgery is a moment in time; we need to get people back to their lives.” Assisting Medina and his fellow physicians in doing that is a highly-trained staff of nurses, therapists and other specialists who work with patients the moment they walk through the door, and even after their care within the Center has been completed. “I treat the patient right from intake and then as an outpatient,” says Medina, who saw an opportunity in Miami to serve a heavily- Hispanic community after training at Temple University’s trauma center. “I look back now and it’s nice to see where they are today.. They become part of our family, we become close to them. I know they’re doing well when I don’t see them.” During patient recovery, Kendall Regional staff takes advantage of some of the most advanced care options in burn treatment today, working, says Medina, to help get burn

victims back to their lives as quickly as possible. Treatments include everything from using skin substitutes to speed healing and control pain to amniotic treatments for deeper burns on sensitive areas such as the face. Through it all, the Burn Center team works to make patients comfortable and calm, offering burn victims and their families dedicated nurses and social workers, occupational and physical therapists, private treatment rooms, full access to hospital resources, innovative therapies and a dedicated operating room on standby at all times. “There are not many places in the U.S. like this,” says Dr. Medina. “There are only six in Florida. The community is able to go to the most Dr. Carlos Medina looking over a patient’s chart with specialized place for care.” Justine Marty, CCLS Certified Child Life Specialist. And within the community, burns are more common than most might think. Medina says many burns are related to South Florida’s good life. “We get a lot of BBQ accidents,” he says. “Kids running around and putting their hands on the grill. We see patients injured from bonfires on the beach, boat owners working on their boats… even burns from microwaves; kids will heat something up and not realize how hot it is.” Aside from general safety, Medina also stresses that, though superficial burns may heal easily, deeper burns and larger areas always need physician attention. “A lot of times people don’t get to a burn center early enough,” he says. “When in doubt, check it out. The biggest problem with burns can be infection, making early intervention incredibly important.” The Burn Center at Kendall Regional Hospital is located at 11750 SW 40th St, Miami, FL 33175. The Burn Center is staffed by specially trained Burn Surgeons, Burn Nurses, and a team of ancillary staff dedicated to providing high quality and compassionate care. The Burn Clinic is a state of the art clinic equipped with private treatment rooms. The Burn Center is open MondayFriday 8 am - 4:30 pm. FTER SITTING IN MIAMI MORNING TRAFFIC, DO YOU ever get to the office motivated and ready to take charge, only to have your day go down the drain by 9:00 am? We open our desktops and are immediately drawn into the vortex of rushing messages, notifications, and phone calls. Mismanaged use of email, smart phones, texts and tablets in the workplace is causing “Digital Depression” - a feeling of being powerless and unable to keep pace, leading to high stress levels and decreasing productivity. By the time we learn to use the latest software program or tech toy we feel pressured to upgrade to the newest version. (Hello, Apple store!) Today’s technology offers fantastic potential but many people find themselves controlled by it, and if you aren’t careful, technology can actually increase your workload rather than increase your productivity. Fortunately, this techno-malady is identifiable and self-treatable, with some help. Here are four symptoms of Digital Depression: Stressed by accessibility Being constantly available by cell phone, or the latest wireless device, means being constantly interrupted. Each call or message you respond to is diverting your attention from your key priorities. Your inability or unwillingness to “unplug” contributes to increased stress. Insecurity due to Digital Darwinism An anxious feeling based on the belief that a technological evolutionary process is taking place and only those who master every program, every upgrade and every gadget will survive. The pressure to acquire the newest wireless all-in-one cell phone - digital assistant-remote control device - to augment existing collection of gadgets and toys, regardless of whether it enhances productivity. Continuous partial attention An inability to concentrate on one task until completion - brought on by a 24/7 world with shorter deadlines and a faster pace. Urgent matters take precedent over important matters, and time isn’t taken to reflect on decisions or to “sleep on it”. Personal productivity declines as a result. Cognitive Interruptus A state of permanent interruption. Whether it’s the smartphone or email alarm, every interruption deflects you from your daily plan, increasing your workload and sense of anxiety. The root cause of Digital Depression, is skills amnesia - in the rush to keep pace with technology trends, people are forgetting to apply basic essential management skills such as planning, managing their priorities, setting goals, communication and delegating. If you recognize any or all of these symptoms, here are a few guidelines to help you maintain control… »» Schedule time to unplug yourself from your job, to unwind and maintain a healthy balance in your life. »» Invest in new skills training just as you invest in new hardware and software. »» Always consider the cost/benefit and return on investment before purchasing new technology. »» You should be able to specifically define how the technology or device will make you more effective at your job. »» Identify your priorities every day. Use these as the basis of your daily plan and stick to it. Achieving that coveted balance between work and life is possible through self-control, which in turn increases our productivity and reduces our stress. Daily planning is the critical process to taking control of our workload and managing our priorities. Before our digital depression permanently settles in, with some skills training, we can bring the future into the present so that we can do something about it now! Luis Ortega is a Certified Productivity Trainer with Priority Management, a worldwide training company with 75 offices in 15 countries and more than two million graduates in programs that help companies and people be more effective in and out of the office. Real Estate Related Quality of Life, Where to Live? BY FRANK DEVALDIVIELSO

S

O MUCH TO DO! THE COOLER HALF OF THE YEAR IS here and with it the traffic is back in full force, people everywhere are hustling to their activities in this beautiful weather. The next six months will bring opportunity to enjoy the arts, the sports, the workouts and so much more. South Florida is in full gear! Shakespeare is coming to Miami in the form of an exhibition of his first folio at FIU along with a series of events around the exhibit including educational programs for the community. The Adrienne Arsht Center will host world-class shows, including Cabaret, The Sound of Music, Motown The Musical and many more. There are some 25 museums in town and many more art galleries. Coral Gables and The Wynwood District each host “Art Walks” every month. The arts are crescendoing and for that we are grateful. It’s easy to understand why any team that wants that discretionary dollar from the local fans has to put on a good product. Miami has the Dolphins, Your Miami Heat is on, and The Panthers open the NHL season this month. The Strikers in Ft. Lauderdale, and soon the Miami FC, will kick off at FIU Stadium in anticipation of an MLS franchise coming to town. Miami will rise to the calling of being a soccer powerhouse. NCAA Football and Soccer games are played every weekend this month in South Florida. You have High School football games on Friday nights to start the weekend off, and in friendly outdoor conditions. Then there are the opportunities to work out. The marathons, 5K runs, fund raising walks and Golf Outings are just a few examples. Tennis anyone? Long walks to breathe deep, and take in the paradise that we live in. Let’s go fishing, catch lobster and harvest stone crabs! Our universities are world-renowned. FIU ranked #6 in the U.S. News Education report for their International Business program. UM has its sixth president in Julio Frenk (wilkommen, bienvenue, welcome) a visionary in global citizenship, and has started construction of a 200,000-square-foot ambulatory care center on campus. Back to school anyone? Tempting, isn’t it? Livability.com named Coral Gables the “Foodie City” of 2015. Yet another reason to go out in the dead of winter. With so much to experience the last thing we want is to spend so much time in traffic, wouldn’t you agree? Projections include a growth in population and more density throughout South Florida. We need mass transportation now, faster than it can get here. If you accept that premise, then it’s reasonable to consider improving your real estaterelated quality of life. To me this means living nearby most of the daily activities that make up “la vie quotidien” and staying within a reasonable radius of the arts, the sports and other entertainment to enjoy. I envision a five to fifteen minute commute to work or school, a short walk to lunch, an evening with friends at a restaurant down the street. On the weekend jump on the Metro Rail to catch a show, walkabout, ride bikes, play soccer, golf and tennis. Take in this wonderful experience with my loved ones. Come to think of it Coral Gables, Downtown Miami, Dadeland, Edgewater District, Miami Beach all are prospects. The next “cooler half of the year” will be the first of many to come. What’s on your canvas and where will you paint it? Frank DeValdivielso, a member the Miami FL Team and The Keyes Company, is based out of 2423 Le Jeune Road, Coral Gables, FL 33134. For more information you can reach Frank at his office, 786 378 8450, or cell, 786 273 8507. You can also email him at RealEstate@MiamiFLTeam.com and please be sure to visit www.MiamiFLTeam.com for the latest listing and news regarding real estate. Building Relationships Through Music BY PENNY DANIELS

M

USIC. IT’S ALL AROUND US AS WE START THE FALL SEASON - FOOTball games, NASCAR races, baseball games. Whether it’s the National Anthem, half-time shows, or team fight songs, all of us either sing, clap our hands, tap our feet, dance to the beat, or listen quietly. Music helps form our attitudes and moods. If the National Anthem, is playing our mood is more of a serious nature. If the fight song is playing, our attitude is more playful and excited. There is no substitute for music as it relates to personal growth and development. With this in mind, why don’t more children learn music in the school setting? And if they join the band in elementary or middle school, why do so many drop their study of music within the first two years? Why don’t adults join a choir or a band? Are we aware of the positive benefits of learning music? There is far more to playing in a band than purchasing an instrument, taking private lessons, adding music class to the school schedule, and rehearsing for a concert. It gives us a roadmap for success; success in all avenues of life. The learned skills needed to excel in music are transferable to every academic subject and every phase of life. The character values we seek in leadership roles, are taught in band. Music shapes the lives of our “leaders of tomorrow” through the ethical habits they establish each day in rehearsal. Learning music embraces all forms of cognitive learning. It teaches us the value of teamwork and how to be an effective team player, nourishes the love of learning, encourages cultural awareness, promotes cooperative flexibility, develops self-discipline, extends understanding, and helps us form friendships that last a lifetime. There is amazing satisfaction in coming together as a team for a common goal. With music, teamwork is very different from that of a sports team, where the goal is to defeat opponents in games. The teamwork in music is about individual and group selfimprovement, competition, hard work, and friendships. When you are a member of a band, choir, or musical group, you share experiences with others that you may not have otherwise had the opportunity. You are frequently building new relationships. If your job moves you to another state, you can join another band or group, and start building new friendships. Music is a wonderful bridge between states. Music is a place for everyone … and is considered a universal language. It’s not too late. Visit your local music store, receive advice from an expert, and begin building relationships through music today! Musicians Discount Center in Miami help you find the instrument that suits you and your needs. They are the one stop music shop that has been sharing their expertise with others for many years. They offer new and used instruments, instrument rentals, rent to own programs and music lessons. Stop in and let the sounds of music begin in your house today. IN 1 WEEK!” “SIX PACK ABS IN 10 MINUTES a day!” “Drop four inches off your waist in the first month!” We have all heard these exaggerated weight loss promises either spouted off by late night infomercials, plastered in a colorful magazine advertisement or on the radio driving to work. Ultimately, though, these are nothing more than catchy slogans and empty promises driven by a multi-billion dollar industry hoping to capitalize on the American population’s (in which one out of every three adults is clinically obese) seemingly never-ending quest for physical perfection. The truth is that weight loss is not rocket science and the good news is that the most effective route toward dropping inches off your waistline is also the simplest. Here are three simple tips that will assist you in your journey toward fat loss and, ultimately, a happier, healthier and longer life. 1. “Calories In versus Calories Out”. A calorie is simply a unit of energy coming from a food source. Dependent on one’s age, height, weight, gender and activity level everyone requires a certain amount of calories to maintain their weight; appropriately this is called one’s “maintenance calories.” Thanks to the convenience of high calorie fast foods and snacks combined with the overwhelming level of inactivity of the average American, most of us eat far more calories than our maintenance level and gain fat. So what is the solution? Read the nutrition facts, eat foods that are relatively low in calories and be more active! 2. High intensity exercise at least three times per week. Everybody has seen those commercials that advertise weight loss “with no exercise required!” Sure, you can lose weight without exercise but after four weeks of starvation you will look in the mirror and see the same reflection staring right back at you! Yes, you may weigh less but your body composition will be the same. If you want six pack abs, a little definition in the back of your arms or a tighter rear end than you need to workout – and workout hard. Buy a heart rate monitor and wear it to the gym because you want to keep your heart rate between 135 and 155 beats per minutes for optimal fat loss results. Try this simple exercise prescription for weight loss and toning: after every set of weights, hop on the treadmill, elliptical or bike and run or pedal as fast you can for two minutes. Try that for forty-five minutes three times a week and take a look at your body in a couple months – you won’t be disappointed! 3. Eat more often! The average American skips breakfast, eats a snack when he or she gets to work, waits a few more hours to have lunch then waits sometimes six-to-seven hours to consume dinner. Not coincidentally, dinner (and then dessert) is usually the biggest meal of the day. While this may not seem like a lot of food, the calories add up quickly because one ends up binging at meal-time because they have waited so long to eat. Eat breakfast when you wake up in the morning (and switch out the coffee and donut for oatmeal and egg whites!) and snack on some fruit or mixed nuts between meals. Start going for green vegetables instead of the French fries and get your chicken grilled, broiled or baked instead of fried or breaded. Remember, fat loss does not need to be complicated or stressful. Whether you want to lose some inches on your waist for the beach, or you are struggling with high blood pressure, if you consistently apply these three simple steps to your daily routine you will see the results. We live in a time where there is a new drug developed to treat a new symptom or disease that has been diagnosed or discovered practically everyday, we often overlook the most simple and effective solution: exercise is truly the world’s only real panacea. Orbera Balloon Comes To South Florida BY JOSE M. SOLER-BAILLO M.D., M.S, BOARD CERTIFIED PLASTIC SURGEON, SOUTH MIAMI, FL

O

RBERA, THE NEWLY FDA-APPROVED GASTRIC BALloon procedure promises hope in the obesity battle. The long-awaited non-surgical procedure is now available in the United States and ResultsMD Weight Loss is proud to be the first office-based surgery center in South Florida to offer the outpatient procedure. While new to the United States, Orbera is a weight loss device with more than 220,000 balloons distributed in more than 80 countries; numbers supported by 230 published papers documenting the balloon’s clinical results. Here’s how it works: The Orbera balloon is part of a two-stage program that uses the balloon to take up space in the patient’s stomach, allowing for portion control as well as the sensation of fullness. The balloon is placed empty endoscopically (through the mouth) under a mild sedative in a 20-minute procedure. Once inside the stomach, the balloon is filled with saline; post-procedure the patient receives nutritional support and coaching. After six months, through a second non-surgical outpatient procedure, the balloon is deflated and removed. Both procedures are performed by board certified bariatric surgeons specifically trained by an FDA-approved protocol. Before

Orbera patients are then closely monitored as they follow a nutritional behavior modification program for 12 months following the procedure. A person of average height weighing 230 lbs can lose 30-40 lbs in the six month period, allowing both men and women to gain the health benefits of losing weight- whether in anticipation of plastic surgery, weddings or other life events. Though the procedure is not covered by insurance, financing options are available. Knowing that obesity a chronic condition that tends to worsen over time, doctors are always happy to find new and innovative interventional tools that will prevent the need for invasive surgeries down the line. “For many, the weight loss battle leaves them with few options other than diet and exercise and invasive surgeries,”said Dr. Amaryllis Pascual, Medical Director of ResultsMD Weight Loss. “We are very excited to offer a non-surgical option that bridges this gap. The balloon offers a great kick-start option for many patients where diets alone have failed.” An International, multilingual Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Jose Soler-Baillo brings to South Florida a refreshing, modern approach to Cosmetic Surgery. Dr. Soler-Baillo earned his Medical Degree at the prestigious Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, trained in General Surgery at the Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey, and received extensive training in Plastic Surgery in Miami, New York, and Texas. Tell me what you’re seeing with recent customers? The biggest trends with window treatments are the California shutters; the wide-blade shutters. People love those. It’s probably 50 percent of what we’re doing now. People are also very interested in the poly-wood. It’s going to last two-to-three times longer than anything else and it doesn’t go out of style. The poly-wood is completely cleanable, it doesn’t have the upkeep of real wood, and it gives that clean, light-colored look that people really favor. I don’t see the demand slowing down.

What’s new as far as product innovation?

When it comes to shades and blinds the industry is trying to get away from cords or pulls. It’s a safety concern. Hunter Douglas has been very innovative in that area. You can basically get anything cordless these days. In fact, many of the newer shades will have a built-in gear so with just the touch of a finger you can open the shade and it will stay in place.

What do you see as the next big trend? The biggest thing in the next five-to-ten years will be a turn toward making everything remote. Every developer is introducing smart homes, with all the controls of the home accessible via computer or smart phone. It’s great because you can control shades when you’re out of town or have them set to shift according to the light. It’s going to become more and more prevalent and become more affordable over the next few years.

What’s unique to South Florida as far as window fashions? Well, and I would guess it’s the same in places like Southern California, people want to keep the light and bright feel of their home while keeping out the heat. To that end the big craze has been sheer weave shades. They’re made to stop 99 percent of the UV and heat from coming in without covering up the views or blocking the light. You can have the best of both worlds; you get the sunlight but control the heat.

What about drapes? Are they a thing of the past? No! Not at all. It’s actually bouncing back. A lot of people are doing shades and blinds but then dressing up their windows with accents of material or side panels. A really modern way to do that is with a ripple fold—it’s sort of an updated version of a pleated fold. It will give the windows a little something extra and dress them up. You always have to have that extra accent. We’ll always send someone out to look at the home and then make suggestions as to what will work within the space and with the windows. I’ve been doing jobs out on Key Biscayne and they don’t want the look of shades. Some people just love drapes. Rick & Nancy’s Window Fashions can be found at 8781 SW 132nd St, Miami, FL 33176. HE FIELD OF VETERINARY PHYSICAL THERAPY HAS BEEN EXPANDING rapidly within the last 15 years at national and international levels. This development has been spurred by the demonstration of its efficacy in humans and animals, an increase in technical advancements amongst veterinary surgeons and neurologists, higher owner expectations, and an increase in pet life spans. This rapid growth has led to many misconceptions regarding this field. “Doc, something is wrong with my Rottweiler, Godzilla. He had knee surgery last week. I read in the internet that he needed to swim after surgery so I put him in the pool yesterday. He bruised my arms thrashing about in the water and now he’s having trouble walking. Can you fix him?” or “My Skippy had spinal surgery a year ago and even though I have been doing some PT at home, he is still dragging his legs. Can you rehab him so he can walk again? ” These too-common scenarios demonstrate the lack of knowledge regarding veterinary rehabilitation. It is seen by some as the last resort, but this is contrary to the core principles of physical rehabilitation, which has as its main goal to prevent disuse changes control pain in order to facilitate proper healing and restore mobility. Veterinary rehabilitation is not just running on a treadmill, swimming, leash walks or passive range of motion exercise. It is much, much more than that. It refers to the use of non-invasive techniques (excluding chiropractic techniques) with the goal of controlling pain and returning the patient to full function. Its goals focus on improving balance, flexibility and strength. This field is classified by the AVMA under the specialty College of Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation. The term “physical therapy” is legally protected and is used exclusively in the human physical therapy field. For this reason, when referring to veterinary medicine we must use the term “physiotherapy” or “rehabilitation” instead. In Florida, only a doctor in veterinary medicine certified in canine rehabilitation is allowed to provide rehabilitation services to animals. A physical therapist certified in animal rehab or a certified veterinary technician that is also certified in animal rehab are both required to be under direct supervision of a veterinarian in order to work on animals legally. The rehabilitation treatment protocol is customized for each patient. It requires a physical therapy diagnosis, specific goals, a detailed plan to reach those goals, and follow up. The veterinary rehabilitator develops an exercise program and understands how to get the patient to do it (this is a challenging phase that requires creativity, imagination, experience, and a great deal of patience). The role of veterinary rehab in the use of orthotics and prosthesis requires acceptance and acclimatization of the device by the patient, learning of task skills for the performance of daily activities, and the improvement of balance, coordination, and proprioception while wearing the new device. The notion of letting the pet use the affected body part when he or she “feels ready” and the reluctance to allow early controlled mobility in conditions where rehabilitation is indicated are concepts of the past. Increase awareness on recent veterinary medical advances is needed in order to prevent misinformation. The performance of physical therapy without guidance and with no knowledge of the discipline can cause serious, permanent damage to the pet. Seek a veterinarian with certification and vast experience on animal rehabilitation. Remember, newer veterinary specialties are only developed to further improve your pet’s quality of life. We welcome you to come and visit us to learn more about this amazing veterinary discipline.

AVING LIVED IN MIAMI 15 years, I know when winter comes, people who ski are making their reservations to head out west but what if you have the need to feel the swoosh under your feet, the chill in the air and only have a weekend? Ponder no more, North Carolina is only a short flight away and Photos courtesy Sam Dean Photography. there are three resorts, which I will cover in a series, that can offer you a winter wonderland if only for a few quick days. Beech Mountain Resort with its alpine village offers everything you need for a family or romantic getaway weekend. The night I pulled into my condo, Klonteska (beechgetaway.com), the snow had already made drifts along the road and the glow from the lamp posts and the crisp air on my face brought me back to my New England childhood days. The snowflakes drifted down as I walked to the Mile High Tavern where I had heard that their Blueberry BBQ Baked Wings were a must have. Grabbing one of their Carolinacrafted beers on tap, I bundled up and took a seat by their fire trough outside. Breathing in the cold air, I knew this was going to be a nice respite from the Miami weather. The next morning I watched deer outside my window with a fire crackling and a coffee in hand. Before heading to the slopes I stopped at Fred’s General Mercantile and as I crossed the threshold I stepped back in time. The smell of the old wood, the candy dispensers, everything a general store should have was at my fingertips. Walking to the back I took up a seat by the picture window and stared out at the most amazing collection of birdhouses dangling from snow-covered trees. A few cinnamon rolls later I vowed to ski all 16 trails to work them off.

Beech Mountain consists of an ice-skating rink, a terrain park and 99 acres of skiing; it even has the highest sky bar in the east called 5506. I made a mental note to have an après ski cocktail up there after I worked off the amazing cinnamon rolls. As an aside, I did make it 80s Retro Weekend February up there and I was spellbound by the view off of the 19-21 where everything is 80’s including your ski attire. Bands, deck. It was a fun place to end the day. A quick shower and I was out the door to a beer look alike contest and great tasting at Beech Mountain Brewing Co. Of course, packages. www.beechmtn. I had to give wine equal billing, so it was at the com/things-to-do/happenings/ cozy bar at Jackalope’s View that I had an aperitif. retro-80s-weekend Jackalopes has three wine cellars and 300 selections of wine to complement one of the best views from the dining room. As I drove out of the village the next morning I noticed the sledding hill and pulled in, but alas, I was over the age limit (only slightly). So much for being able to tap into my inner child but I was on my way to Sugar Mountain and perhaps there I could build a snowman. Note to self, pick up a carrot on the way. Are Bully Sticks Safe For Your Dog BY TAMI MAIER

LOVING PET CARE IN YOUR HOME OR MINE

B

ULLY STICKS FOR DOGS ARE CHEW TOYS MADE FROM BULL PENISES. Other names for bully sticks include pizzle sticks, steer sticks and beef sticks. These chew toys are made from pure beef and are not only safe for all dogs, but offer a number of benefits. Let’s look at the facts about bully sticks for dogs.

What Are Bully Sticks? Bully sticks are chew toys for dogs made from bull penises. Manufacturers may refer to them as “dried muscles” or “tendons,” however, to avoid offending public sensibilities. Bully sticks are made by cleaning and draining the fluids from bull penises. The penises may then be stretched, twisted, or braided into different sized chew toys for different sized dogs. Many bully sticks are smoked for enhanced flavor. Bully sticks are sold in several different sizes to suit the needs of all dogs. The smallest bully sticks are typically about four inches long. Bully sticks for larger dogs may be as long as 12 inches. Bully sticks may be up to four inches wide.

How Can They Help Prevent Prevent Gum Disease? The production of bully sticks is regulated by the USDA, so you know that they’re made with the best ingredients. Bully sticks are typically made from 100% natural ingredients, and often contain no pesticides, chemicals or dyes. Because they’re made from pure meat, they’re easy for your dog to digest. Like other chew toys, bully sticks can help maintain your dog’s dental health. They can stop plaque and tartar from accumulating on your dog’s teeth, to prevent tooth decay. As a result, bully sticks are also an effective way to stave off gingivitis and periodontal disease. These diseases can cause inflammation, mouth pain, tooth decay, and life-threatening bacterial infection in the liver, heart, joints and kidneys.

How Safe Are Bully Sticks? Bully sticks are a low-fat dog treat, so they can be safely enjoyed even by overweight and obese animals. They provide your dog with calcium, magnesium, and other minerals and vitamins necessary to canine health. Bully sticks contain large amounts of protein, to help maintain the health of your dog’s muscles and organs. They also contain taurine, an amino acid that can help maintain your dog’s healthy throughout his life. Rawhide and other traditional dog chew toys can be dangerous to dogs. Dogs can easily break rawhide chews into small fragments that may lodge in the windpipe and present a choking hazard. Bully sticks for dogs, however, are far more difficult to break into pieces, especially if you choose a thicker bully stick. This means they’re less likely than other chew toys to present a choking hazard to your dog, but, just to be on the safe side, you should take your dog’s bully stick away and replace it with a new one when it becomes small enough to lodge in his throat.

Are You A Rearview Mirror Person? BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ, DIVORCE COACH

H

OW MANY TIMES A DAY DO YOU LOOK IN YOUR REARview mirror (and I am not talking about the one in your car)? How many times do you look over your shoulder at the past and ask yourself why you’re stuck, why you can’t move on, and why nothing “good” seems to be happening in your life? Stop looking in that rearview mirror and get out of your own way so the present can come in and take its rightful place. Why is it that anger and resentment rule over happiness and contentment? You’re looking back. Why are you more concerned with how your ex is living his/her life instead of how you’re living yours? You’re looking back. Why are your days filled with thoughts of regret instead of possibilities? You’re looking back. Looking back is needed to take inventory of your life and learn the lessons, but it is not meant to be done continuously. It is then that it loses its effect and becomes non productive, even detrimental. Don’t keep stumbling over something behind you. Here’s a tip: get with the program. Your life is now, today, this present moment, and every time you look back, you are only robbing yourself. By continuing that behavior you also put yourself on an emotional roller coaster. If you’re going to have emotions, make them good ones. Excitement, anticipation, hope, and happiness are all emotions you feel when you look ahead of you. They will generate good energy and elevate your vibrations and then- BAM- the law of attraction kicks in. No more feeling stuck or asking yourself why good things aren’t happening. Now you know why, so the choice is yours. Keep looking in that small rearview mirror or look out of your big front windshield at all that is ahead of you. A divorce is the end of the road but not a dead end. Keep looking ahead for the signs!

Tips for a Safe Halloween BY FRANK ISTUETA, OWNER, ISTUETA ROOFING

H

ALLOWEEN IS AN EXCITING TIME OF YEAR for kids and grownups alike. But with so much going on, it’s easy to overlook the most basic precautions. So to ensure that everyone has a safe Halloween this year, we’re sharing some of our top tips.

Consider the Costume

of a candle to light your pumpkin; if you do use a candle, a votive candle is the safest option. »» Candlelit pumpkins should be placed on a sturdy table, away from curtains and other flammable objects, and should never be left unattended.

Home Safe Home

»» Dress your children in bright and reflective costumes, making sure that shoes fit well and that costumes are short enough to prevent tripping. »» Add reflective tape or striping to costumes and trickor-treat bags for improved visibility. »» Use non-toxic makeup and decorative hats instead of masks to ensure clear vision. »» Be sure to look for flame-resistant costumes, wigs and accessories. »» Teach children how to call 9-1-1 (or their local emergency number) if they have an emergency or become lost.

Preparing the Pumpkin »» Small children should draw a face with markers and let parents do the cutting. »» Consider using a flashlight or glow stick instead

»» To keep homes safe for visiting trick-or-treaters, parents should remove anything a child could trip over from the porch and front yard. »» Parents should check outdoor lights and replace burned-out bulbs. »» Restrain pets so they do not accidentally jump on or bite a trick-or-treater.

Treat or Treat! »» A parent or responsible adult should always accompany young children on their neighborhood rounds. »» If older children are going alone, plan and review the route that is acceptable to you and agree on a specific time when they should return. »» Only go to homes with a porch light on and never enter a home or car for a treat. »» Stay in a group and communicate via cellphone

where you are. »» Stay on well-lit streets and always use the sidewalk; never cut across yards or use alleys. »» Only cross the street in established crosswalks and never cross between parked cars. »» Don’t assume the right of way - motorists may have difficulty seeing trick-or-treaters.

Happy – and Healthy – Halloween »» A good meal prior to the night’s events will discourage kids from filling up on treats. »» Consider purchasing non-food treats for those who visit your home(coloring books or pens and pencils) »» Wait until children are home to sort and check treats. Though tampering is rare, a responsible adult should closely examine all treats and throw away any spoiled, unwrapped or suspicious items. If you follow these tips, you and your family will have a safe, happy and healthy Halloween this year!

ELECTRIC TAILGATE AT PINECREST GARDENS Electric vehicle (EV) drivers, enthusiasts, and those intrigued by the benefits of driving an electric vehicle came together at the Pinecrest Electric Vehicle Tailgate Event on Saturday, September 19th. The event, tailored to highlight the fun, clean-air benefits and costsavings of electric cars as part of the annual National Drive Electric Week, allowed visitors to meet and greet EV owners, take ride-and-drives from local EV dealers, and browse vendors promoting EV aftermarket products. “Electric cars are freeing Americans from the gas pump, cleaning the air of dirty fumes, and best of all – they’re more fun to drive,” said Pinecrest Mayor Cindy Lerner. Pinecrest’s event is one of more than 100 across the country where EVs will be spotlighted through similar events that include electric car parades, “tailpipe-free” tailgate parties, recognition of leaders promoting EVs and launches of new public EV charging stations.
