Miami-Dade Schools Police Detective Alicia Neal has been selected to be Court Liaison Officer at Miami Dade County Children’s Courthouse. This is the first time that a Miami-Dade Schools Officer has been tapped for the position.

WHOLE FOODS PARTNERS WITH FUNKY BUDDHA BREWERY Whole Foods Market is partnering with South Florida’s popular Funky Buddha Brewery to debut a Floridian spent grain sourdough bread. Two months in the making, the partnership began when Funky Buddha Brewery provided David McAndrew, Whole Foods Market’s Bakehouse Facility Team Leader with spent grain used to make their Floridian Hefeweizen beer. “We usually give the grains to farmers and when Whole Foods Market approached us, we loved the idea of teaming up to recycle the grains,” said John Linn, Brand Director of Funky Buddha Brewery. “Whole Foods Market is all about upcycling and so are we.” The bread hit shelves in late October at 25 Florida locations.

TRI-COUNTY DEMONSTRATION of walking, bicycling, riding transit and using trails to get South Floridians out of their cars will roll out November 11-15. More than 20 local, state and national governmental agencies, nonprofits and companies are behind the WHEELS initiative, a program meant to get citizens out of their cars as infrastructure improvements further help reduce the region’s notorious road congestion. At least 10,000 people are expected to try some mix of green mobility during the program, which extends through Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. It’s centered in South Miami, the only South Florida city where transit and a multi-use trail directly pass through downtown. Activities include bike tours of transit systems and trails; critical mass transit rides; a conference; and the firstever bike-in South Miami street party. South Miami was chosen for WHEELS when planners for the national East Coast Greenway Alliance trail nonprofit realized it could hold its annual fall leadership meeting in a place that didn’t require travel by car. Alliance leaders will arrive at Miami International Airport, ride the Orange Line to lodgings in Dadeland, and otherwise get around for three days by walking, using rental bikes, riding transit, and biking the M-Path, which is a portion of its 2,900 route. “You can bet that the conference will talk about showers in the workplace and secure places to park bikes,” says town planner Victor Dover, principal of Dover, Kohl & Partners and volunteer chairman of WHEELS and a walk-bike-transit-trail commuter. The program will also include safety training, including how to use bikes with trains and buses, and will provide free helmets and bike tune-ups for early registrants. One unique activity will include mentoring by Dover and others like him for drive commuters “stressed beyond coping,” he says. “It’s time that Miami joins the ranks of the great American cities that have strong walk-bike components,” says Dover, whose company added inoffice showers for other walk-bike-transit commuters. “This is critical for Miami’s future, and we hope this event will help jump-start the process.”

An Entrepreneurial Spirit BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

NYONE WHO HAS LOST A PET CAN RELATE to the panic and worry that comes with missing a furry friend. Luckily, one enterprising Coral Gables High School student has a solution…and $5,000 seed money. On October 1st Gables High senior Khareem Oliver was awarded first place in the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship’s (NFTE) LaunchED Challenge for his business “Find or Found,” an innovative app/website that helps pet owners keep tabs on their animals. “It works with a pet tag that has a QR code on it,” explains Oliver, who is currently a student in Gables’ Academy of Finance program. “Every time the QR code is scanned it’ll send the owner a GPS notification via email or text message.” The students that participated in the LaunchED Challenge were selected from 21 participants in Gables High senior Khareem Oliver Startup Summer, an intense eight-week teen business incubator organized by NFTE at the Miami Dade College Idea Center for advanced high school entrepreneurs under support from the Citi Foundation. Over the summer, each student received a laptop, $1,000 in seed capital, a $1,000 stipend; as well as intense one-on-one mentoring and support to launch the business. The “Shark Tank”-style event allowed four of those students to pitch their businesses to a panel of entrepreneurs and executives

for a chance to win a portion of $11,000 in seed capital to invest in their business. With his win, Oliver hopes to continue on with the app idea, looking for a developer or potential partner in South Florida to code the smartphone application and website. “’I’m also contacting a manufacturer that can go ahead and start the production of the Smart QR Tags,” he says. In addition to Oliver, winners from the event (judged by Albert Santalo, Founder of CareCloud and Wifredo Fernandez, Director of CREATE Miami at Miami Dade College among others) included Gabriel Martinez, who won $3,000 for his school supply vending machine business GAMV; Janeiya Henderson who won $1,500 with Pebbles Tutoring; and Justin Rivas who also won $1,500 for his basketball tournament company Top Level Athletics. Moving on to college, Oliver says his entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well, (“I’m always thinking of new ways to innovate, to help others and to make life simple.”) and that his time in the program has given him not only the funds to move forward with his business but the encouragement to keep thinking of the next big idea. Says Oliver, “The biggest lesson that I took away from this summer is if you’re given an opportunity to do something you go ahead and take it!”

AST MONTH, I ATTENDED THE RISING TIDES SUMMIT, A conference where more than 30 mayors and local officials raised awareness about coastal flooding/sea level rise. This delegation of elected local leaders met in New Hampshire to talk about this issue in order to be more responsive and better prepared to deal with this important matter. With more than 123 million Americans living in coastal shoreline counties, sea level rise has become a national concern. Coastal flooding is causing increasingly costly impacts on businesses, infrastructure, private property along America’s shorelines, and affecting tourism. Here in Coral Gables we have 47 miles of winding waterways and sea level rise can affect our community. Local leaders need to join in the national and regional dialogue to find viable solutions and make smart investments to keep our cities protected. We all play a crucial role in helping communities address the urgent challenge of sea level rise, so urge you to be informed about what possible solutions we can implement individually, and together as a community. Living with MS UM FRESHMAN SIDNEY STERLING PUTS A NEW FACE ON THE DISEASE. BY SIDNEY STERLING

F THE AVERAGE PERSON SAW ME WALKING DOWN THE STREET OR ON CAMPUS they would probably comment on my outfit or notice my University of Miami cheerleading backpack. They would never be able to tell that I have Multiple Sclerosis (MS), that is the beauty of my disease. For those of you who do not know what MS is, it is an autoimmune disease that attacks the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and damages the protective covering of the nerves. I was diagnosed with MS when I was 16-years-old and have not had a symptom since my initial diagnosis. Throughout my journey of living with MS, I have not let it define me. I achieved many of my goals: High school cheerleading captain, winning worlds with my competitive cheerleading team, getting involved with Shop to Stop MS, graduating high school with a 3.7 GPA while taking AP courses, getting accepted to the University of Miami, making the University of Miami cheerleading squad and now double majoring in Public Relations and Broadcast Journalism. This all could not have been achieved without my amazing parents, Kim and Lee Sterling, I would not be where I am today and I can honestly say they are the best team around. I know I do not say it enough but thank you mom and dad. Seeing you both cry when I was in the hospital and when I was diagnosed only inspired me to be strong for you two. You have given me the absolute world, given me all the tools to succeed and have supported me throughout everything. Many people questioned my decision to go to the University of Miami because I was â&#x20AC;&#x153;too close to homeâ&#x20AC;? but you encouraged me to make the choice on what was best for me. Who would want to leave their parents if they were as amazing as mine? By staying in Miami you both realized I could keep going to my amazing doctors at UM and continue my passion for cheerleading. I have never been happier and I hope more kids from the Miami area consider UM because we truly take what is in our own backyard for granted. I went to public school my whole life so to be able to go to a private university where my classes are smaller than the classes I had in high school is truly a blessing. Mom and dad really do know best. It seems almost that my life began to fall into place and that I found my purpose post diagnosis. Once I met Nicki Friedland, who also had MS and who has served as someone I admire and look up to, I was inspired to join Shop to Stop MS and give back to my school, the place where I (and many other who have MS) receive treatment. Tell me what you’re seeing with recent customers? The biggest trends with window treatments are the California shutters; the wide-blade shutters. People love those. It’s probably 50 percent of what we’re doing now. People are also very interested in the poly-wood. It’s going to last two-to-three times longer than anything else and it doesn’t go out of style. The poly-wood is completely cleanable, it doesn’t have the upkeep of real wood, and it gives that clean, light-colored look that people really favor. I don’t see the demand slowing down.

What’s new as far as product innovation? When it comes to shades and blinds the industry is trying to get away from cords or pulls. It’s a safety concern. Hunter Douglas has been very innovative in that area. You can basically get anything cordless these days. In fact, many of the newer shades will have a built-in gear so with just the touch of a finger you can open the shade and it will stay in place.

What do you see as the next big trend? The biggest thing in the next fiveto-ten years will be a turn toward making everything remote. Every developer is introducing smart homes, with all the controls of the home accessible via computer or smart phone. It’s great because you can control shades when you’re out of town or have them set to shift according to the light. It’s going to become more and more prevalent and become more affordable over the next few years.

What’s unique to South Florida as far as window fashions? Well, and I would guess it’s the same in places like Southern California, people want to keep the light and bright feel of their home while keeping out the heat. To that end the big craze has been sheer weave shades. They’re made to stop 99 percent of the UV and heat from coming in without covering up the views or blocking the light. You can have the best of both worlds; you get the sunlight but control the heat.

What about drapes? Are they a thing of the past? No! Not at all. It’s actually bouncing back. A lot of people are doing shades and blinds but then dressing up their windows with accents of material or side panels. A really modern way to do that is with a ripple fold—it’s sort of an updated version of a pleated fold. It will give the windows a little something extra and dress them up. You always have to have that extra accent. We’ll always send someone out to look at the home and then make suggestions as to what will work within the space and with the windows. HY DO WE EXERCISE? WHY DO WE PUT OURSELVES in periods of extreme discomfort numerous times per week through weight training and cardio or through hot yoga and pilates? Most of us who exercise frequently have no goal or intention of becoming a professional athlete, stepping on a bodybuilding stage or competing with anyone other than ourselves - so, what is it that drives us? I was a competitive athlete all through my school years and eventually got into competitive bodybuilding. Ironically, exercise became more of a natural part of my life after I ended my pursuit of those endeavors. Throughout sports and bodybuilding, working out felt like a chore - a responsibility, in many ways, something that I had to do as a necessity for my other purpose. It was only once I became a part of the professional world, became more consumed by day to day responsibilities that characterize life after college, that I began to really enjoy exercising. Rather than being a necessary evil, it became a necessary release - a catharsis and an escape from my daily responsibilities. I found that on the days that I exercises, I was more centered at work, more productive and more focused. I believe that one of the greatest benefits of exercise beyond the obvious health and physical aspects - is mental. For most of us, our days are spent in a controlled environment, generally working on a means to an end, to some degree. Going to the gym and lifting weights, going outside and running, doing yoga or any variety of physical exercise provides a much-needed escape from the mundane, from the average. It gets our adrenaline pumping, it releases endorphin, it makes us feel even primal. It provides us with a feeling of release that we do not normally get. Finally, exercise gives us an amazing aspect of control. Our body - the results we achieve from diet and exercise - is one of the few, if only, things that we have complete and utter control over. We can choose to lose weight, build muscle, get stronger, get faster, get more flexible based on our own desires and dedications without the interference or involvement of outside influences. It is extremely satisfying to look in the mirror and know your reflection is a byproduct of your own dedication and desires. For those of you currently following a dedicated exercise routine, keep going! Take it up a notch and add an extra day or even get a personal trainer to push you further! Set a goal that may seem impossible to reach and try to achieve it. For those of you that have not yet taken the fitness plunge, start now - you will be amazed by the control and balance it provides your life. HE BUSINESS OF SELLING RESIDENTIAL REAL ESTATE often reveals these competing priorities. Some homeowners are so attached to the home that you can sense they have grown roots down into the foundation and are essentially part of the structure, while others perceive the residence as a material component of their lives that can easily be traded in for another model. Some people love their homes and feel an attachment outside of reason. It can be that the home brings memories of moments and times that are cherished. When the discussion of moving to another place comes about the body language and vocabulary clearly demonstrate they’re not moving. “They’ll take me from here straight to the cemetery,” is a far too common response. Often we also hear that there has to be room for the kids when they come back to visit. Living in the hope that they do come back to visit has an opportunity cost also measured in time, wouldn’t you agree? What can you do with that time if you live near the kids? Or parents, siblings and those that are truly important in one’s life? Once we’re given the opportunity to decide, why do we let the four walls have such weight on the decision? Moving on and evolving is a conscious choice that is best made for oneself, isn’t it? On the other hand there are those that are not attached to the home beyond its useful purpose. If another home comes on the market that is more suitable to their needs, they move. Really. No drama, just a decision made because it makes sense. This can be someone that is moving to a larger home because they have been graced with another child and need an extra bedroom. It can also be the family that is right sizing to a three-bedroom home because five bedrooms are too many for a couple. After all, it is cheaper to put the kids and grandchildren up in a five-star hotel the one time they do visit every year, than to pay the taxes on the five-bedroom home. When the financial crunch came around some years ago, the perception by homeowners was more practical than emotional. We all know someone or another who defaulted on their loan as a financial strategy. No roots there. So, now that our homes are worth more than the debt on them, why the emotional attachment? Eventually as homeowners grow older the inevitable conclusion is that it’s more about whom you’re with than where you are. This holiday season can be a very good barometer to help determine whom you want to be nearby for the foreseeable future. The current real estate market allows for move-up, right size moves and relocation to Anywhere USA. Take full advantage and make good use of this market for the next phase in life. OST RUNNERS FEEL THEIR RUNNING ACTIVITIES ALONE provide them with a well rounded exercise program. However, while running is great cardiovascular work, it can lead to imbalances in the body. Those imbalances can sideline runners and must be addressed in order to continue the activity in a healthy and beneficial way. Pilates is an excellent complement to any runner’s routine as it can help strengthen muscles to allow for decrease stress on the body during running. There are many different kinds of runners. There are marathoners and other distance cravers who may or may not be competitive; there are short distance runners who also may or may not compete and then there are casual runners who just try to fit in a few miles a week to keep their cardiovascular systems in good working order. No matter which type of runner, the same muscle groups are used to propel the body forward. Primarily the hip flexors to pull the top of the leg forward, the quadriceps to extend the knee then tibialis anterior to flex the foot and prepare to plant the forward foot. Once down, that leg is pulled back using the gluteus and hamstrings. The big issue here is that while in that running gait, the runner’s body is moving in the sagittal plane therefore the muscles that support movement in the horizontal and frontal planes are not challenged specifically. Runners can exhibit imbalances in a number of different ways. Some may have tight hip flexors on one side and a tight IT band on the other due to an instability in the pelvic girdle. Some runners may have great quadriceps strength but poor hip strength causing asymmetries with each stride creating low back or knee pain. Pilates can also help runners with core strength so they can be more upright in their posture as well as with increase chest expansion allowing for improved breath functions.

RE ACUPUNCTURE NEEDLES PAINFUL FOR A PET? WILL a pet allow the insertion of needles into the skin? Does acupuncture really work? These are a few questions that veterinary doctors trained and certified in veterinary acupuncture get all the time. Even though it has been a staple of Eastern Medicine for thousands of years, it is in the last 20 years or so that acupuncture has become a mainstream modality in Veterinary Medicine. In fact, many veterinary schools today include in their curriculum introductory courses on the basics of veterinary acupuncture. Many general practitioners, board certified veterinary neurologists and anesthesiologist, are seeking the post doctoral Certification in Veterinary Acupuncture. Why? Because it works. Acupuncture refers to the insertion of thin metal needles into specific sites of the body, called acupuncture points, for the treatment or prevention of diseases and pain. Acupuncture also refers to other types of stimulation of these points, such as an injection of fluid (e.g. vitamin B12), electrical stimulation, light stimulation with low level laser, or local heating with a smoldering herb called “moxibustion.” But how does it work? Acupuncture induces changes in the function of the brain that lead to changes at the level of the endocrine, autonomic, and circulatory systems as well as at the mental-emotional level. Acupuncture works better for chronic problems by decreasing pain and inflammation, increasing energy levels, and reinforcing the action of the immune system. Acupuncture also provides important advantages to pets with cancer including pain reduction, elimination of nausea, and improved glandular function following radiation therapy. To determine if your pet is a good candidate for acupuncture therapy, a diagnosis is always the first step. This means that the doctor requires the same historical, physical and diagnostic information that is required for a conventional veterinary treatment. Aggressive pets are not candidates for acupuncture therapy. A typical trial period for acupuncture involves an “induction stage” of two to three treatments per week for at least two weeks. Since the effects of acupuncture are cumulative in nature, the benefits of the therapy will be short lived initially (one-to-two days), but will then accumulate, producing longer lasting effects. Once these longer lasting effects have been reached, the frequency of the sessions are tapered down to the minimum that will maintain the effects (“maintenance” stage). When looking for a veterinary acupuncturist, it’s important to remember that acupuncture is considered a medical procedure and, by law, only a licensed Veterinarian can provide the therapy. In addition, the doctor must have been awarded the postgraduate Certification in Veterinary Acupuncture by an institution recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Lastly, as with any other medical modality, the medical instrument is only as good as the trained hands using it. Seek a veterinary acupuncturist with many years of experience in acupuncture therapy and Traditional Chinese Medicine for best results. Veterinary acupuncture is a safe, natural, and effective treatment alternative for pets with no adverse effects. When considering treatments for your ailing pet, you owe it to them to put acupuncture at the top of your list.

Y NOW, MOST AMERICANS ARE AWARE OF THE IMPORTANCE OF STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education. It is widely accepted that for our economy to remain competitive we must solve for the expected shortage of qualified workers in STEM fields, 3 million of them by 2020. For decades, as the pace of technological integration into economies accelerated at a breakneck pace, the education resources available to the majority of young learners has remained frustratingly stagnant. Few students are equipped with the experience, and most importantly, the confidence to complete a college major within a STEM field successfully. Academic success, and eventual professional success, is built on an early educational foundation. For technical skillsets related to computer science and math, a child’s confidence is made or broken by the time they reach middle school. Lifelong opinions on their ability to excel in technical fields are fundamentally linked to experiences and perceptions formed during elementary school. Antiquated representations of STEM fields, often men in lab coats doing boring, repetitious work, persist in today’s media and culture. The result has been a preconceived notion among young learners that being an engineer, mathematician, computer scientist, or even a doctor is not something they can or should achieve. The shortage of positive, STEM-related educational experiences at a young age has produced a generation of students who are choosing not to pursue those fields at all. Even those who choose to enter a STEM discipline will rarely be prepared for the challenges they encounter. Inclusion of girls as members of the STEM community is crucial to solving this flawed construct. Creating an environment where all kids, regardless of gender, can be inspired is vital to reversing the trend of STEM-phobia in American students. Intimidating drills, rote memorization, and outdated classroom technology were not designed for the needs of 21st century learners. Skills like conceptual problem solving and critical thinking will be as important as reading and writing in the workforce of the future, and are better taught through a hands-on, peer-based approach that integrates fun as an essential ingredient to learning. The sooner society learns to embrace teaching students not just how to use technology as a tool for learning math and reading, but also how to create technology itself, the sooner we will be providing them with a path for accelerated success. SEEN O N S CENE PALMER TRINITY ECO CLUB CLEANS UP AT BLACK POINT Palmer Trinity School Eco Club participated in National Public Lands Day by removing exotic species and trash from Black Point Park and Marina. Students removed Brazilian Pepper trees, an exotic species that inhabit the mangroves and prevent their growth.
