12.2015
T IS HARD TO BELIEVE IT’S ALREADY TIME TO SAY GOODBYE TO 2015 AND WELcome in a new calendar year. We’re very excited to see what 2016 has in store, but we would be remiss not to acknowledge how rewarding this year has been. We have formed amazing relationships with local businesses and individuals, and are glad to be able to call them friends. We’ve covered amazing events and been privileged to tell some incredible stories. We thank the community for all of the support, and will continue to work hard to make The Florida Villager the best it can be. December also means that the holiday season is in full swing. There are wonderful events taking place this month, and for a complete list, see our Events Calendar (page 8). If you’re tired of slaving away in the kitchen, and need a break from meal planning, be sure to check out our “Restaurant Guide” and head over to some of our local favorites this December (page 18). If you’re thinking about buying a new home or selling your current home, we’ve got you covered! Don’t miss this month’s cover story showcasing Rosie Cruz-Sotero, a local realtor who specializes in customer experience (page 22). And lastly, whether shopping for your husband, father, brother, or son, be sure to read Luis Ortega’s article “Holiday Gift List for the Manly Man,” for some great gift ideas (page 35). Don’t forget to connect with us via social media. You can find us on Twitter (@FloridaVillager), Facebook (The Florida Villager), Instagram (@thefloridavillager), and Google + (The Florida Villager). You can also find an on-line version of our publication at www.TheFloridaVillager.com. We wish all of our readers a happy and healthy holiday season, and a very Happy New Year! We look forward to sharing 2016 with you! Sincerely,

D E N TA L O F F I C E C O M I N G S O O N ! For over 25 years, we have successfully treated hundreds of patients with unattractive and poorly functioning smiles. Many business executives, media professionals, and figures in front of the cameras, whose success depends not only upon their knowledge but also upon their appearances, seek beautiful smiles with straight, white teeth to achieve ultimate success in their professional lives. When perceiving the perfect smile, the brain notices and focuses on three components: the gums, the border of the teeth, and the lips. Once all three aspects are corrected, you will have the perfect smile! Our state-of-the-art and multi-specialty dental practice, Murias Dental Group, will be opening an additional location soon in South Miami. Miami Dade College (MDC) is once again accepting applications for Cohort 8 of the successful 10,000 Small Businesses program scheduled to begin May 26, 2016, at the Wolfson Campus. Goldman Sachs’ 10,000 Small Businesses (10KSB) is a classroom-based business education program that gives entrepreneurs several benefits including valuable skills for growing their businesses, the opportunity to access financial capital and powerful networking opportunities at no cost to participants. The curriculum includes one-on-one advice, clinics, and workshops administered by subject matter experts. Goldman Sachs professionals also serve as panelists and judges for the so-called scholar rehearsals, the “Rocket Pitches.” Participants will also learn to identify and evaluate opportunities, understand financial statements, hire, retain and lead employees, negotiate successfully and create a comprehensive growth plan, among other lessons. The first year of program delivery - which began in February last year and featured MDC alumni, area business professionals and advisors - graduated 73 small business owners who are now poised for major growth. Multiple webinars will occur Nov. 10, 2015 through February 10, 2016. 10KSBapply.com
BIG APPLE CIRCUS CLOWN CARE CELEBRATES 15 YEARS OF BRINGING SMILES TO HOSPITALIZED CHILDREN AT NICKLAUS CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL On any given day at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, Clown Doctors can be seen roaming the hallways and visiting children, using the healing power of humor to create smiles when and where they are needed the most. Last month, Big Apple Circus Clown Care celebrated 15 years of bringing such laughter to patients and their families. To commemorate the occasion, patients and their families were treated to a carnival-themed “Quinceañera,” a Spanish coming-of-age celebration held on a child’s 15th birthday, in the hospital’s playroom, complete with food, games, prizes, and fun for all. “The Clown Care program plays an essential role in the healing process for the children in our care. We are grateful for our ongoing collaboration with Big Apple Circus to provide this valued service to our patients and their families,” said Michael Kushner, Senior Vice President and Talent Officer for Miami Children’s Health System.

Lights On: Miami International Children’s Film Festival to Premiere a Dozen Films BY LAUREN WEINTRAUB
A
COW, A SATELLITE GIRL AND AN ENCHANTED ROLL OF TOILET PAPER JOIN forces to try to set the world right. Children living on top of a landfill in Paraguay create an orchestra made of trash and tour the world, finally realizing their dream of playing with a heavy metal band. And a diverse band of crayons strive to protect their magical homeland and the imagination of children everywhere from a terrifying monster. These are among the tales children and adults alike can watch unfold on the big screen at the 3rd Annual Miami International Children’s Film Festival, returning December 26 to the Coral Gables Art Museum. This year’s festival, which will premiere a diverse range of a dozen international films geared toward audiences age three and up that would otherwise not be available in Miami, will fill six days with screenings, parties and workshops that include opportunities to meet the filmmakers. Also among the movie offerings: two 3D films, award-winning short films for young children and award-winning short films for kids and teens. “We started this festival to give South Florida children a more diverse selection of films, and we are elated that this global festival is returning with nearly a week of films and family
fun,” said Midge Blumberg-Krams, chair of the Festival Committee. “Families want films that showcase different cultures and languages, sparking a lifetime interest in the cinematic arts. The festival continues to expand our children’s horizons and bring families to an art-house environment.” The Coral Gables Art Cinema is presenting the festival alongside the New York International Children’s Film Festival, an Oscar-qualifying event that premieres 100 new films and draws 25,000 people. “We are delighted to continue our partnership for the third consecutive year with Miami to bring the best of this year’s new, exciting global films to South Florida families,” said Nina Guralnick, executive director of the New York International Children’s Film Festival. Coral Gables Art Cinema, 260 Aragon Avenue, has been showcasing first-run independent, alternative and international films since 2010. Funding for the event comes in part from the Knight Foundation, the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the City of Coral Gables. Tickets on opening day, which include food and drinks, are $10 for kids and $15 for adults ($12 for members). Tickets the rest of the week will be $5 for kids and $7 for adults. Parking is on-site in the covered garage.

Giralda Under the Stars Shines Brightly
by
BY LAUREN WEINTRAUB
N
OW THAT THE SUMMER HEAT HAS FINALLY dissipated, diners looking for something a little different can enjoy their dinner al fresco amid live entertainment on the streets of downtown Coral Gables. Some of the area’s best restaurants and bars close the streets to vehicular traffic and fill them with tables and chairs during the Giralda Under the Stars series, now in its seventh year and a Coral Gables tradition. Giralda Under the Stars brings diners from surrounding neighborhoods to socalled Restaurant Row, the 100 block of Giralda Avenue between Ponce de Leon Blvd. and Galiano Street. Part street party, the event brings live music and art to the scene. The kids’ area is open from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and features new kid-friendly activities every week. “Every year gets more exciting and attracts more people,” says Marina Foglia, the executive director of the Coral Gables Business Improvement District. “We get people from all over Miami coming to this event to see what food and entertainment it has to offer, and as a result, each month our frequents always come back for more and new faces come around to see what the buzz is all about.”

Should You Bribe Children For Good Grades?

BY LYLE GREEN, WESTMINSTER CHRISTIAN SCHOOL PERSONAL COUNSELOR
S
HOULD WE GIVE OUR KIDS INCENTIVES TO BOOST ACAdemic performance? Some would say, “But, It works!” Yes, but when “it works,” does the higher grade indicate a positive shift in values and priorities? Does an uptick in the GPA translate into a life-skill that will remain stable over time – on into college, a career, or life in general? In a Group Publishing survey, 74 percent of American teenagers – from private, religious schools – admitted to cheating on schoolwork. The reason? It’s all about the grade. If a grade comes in under par, the student is less worried about the deficit in learning and most concerned about the loss of some secondary reward. This might not be the value system we want to perpetuate. How can we help our kids get better grades without undermining the educational process? 1. Cultivate an emotionally safe environment for discussing academics. Indeed, an “unacceptable” grade can send a parent’s emotional barometer plummeting. But emotional reactivity blocks effective communication. On the other hand, a calm conversation can keep defense mechanisms minimized so that a parent’s words are more readily accepted by a child. »» Be intentional about discussing the school day – and not just academics. School-life is multi-faceted – each with it’s own set of experiences to be explored and managed. Key words? “Tell me more.” »» Check grades regularly – but not as the Grand Inquisitor. Be the veteran trainer in the kid’s corner to whom he/she can retreat after a couple of hard rounds at school. Share perceptions, strategies and examples of your own school experiences. »» Encouragement is a positive reinforcement – and it doesn’t cost anything. One of the best strategies for boosting academic performance is giving verbal praise for responsible behavior. This is the intentional pause in a busy day to look into a child’s eyes and say something positive about his/her accomplishments—academic or otherwise. It’s powerful and hugely formative. »» Keep it real. An accurate assessment of a child’s innate gifts, passions and skills can better inform a parent’s expectations and responses to the student’s performance. Are you absolutely sure he can do better? Should she really be spending four hours per night on homework? Does he really want to play that instrument? 2. Use rewards strategically. If a material reward is deemed justified for improved performance, consider when and how the reward should be presented. Here is where science can teach us something. Research indicates that unexpected rewards, presented intermittently, and after the fact of a desired behavior inspire and reinforce the more intrinsic and enduring motivations we want to cultivate in our children. The upside to this reinforcement schedule is that the positive behavior is more resistant to extinction. The downside? It’s not a quick fix. The desired behaviors take a while to acquire. But why trade the whole orchard for a single apple now? 3. Be involved at school. Values are usually caught not taught. When kids see their mom and/or dad actively invested in the educational process, intuitively they know that school, and the responsibilities that attach to it, are worthwhile pursuits. In the final analysis, every child should go to bed at night knowing he/she is unconditionally cherished on the home front without ever drawing the inference that Mom’s or Dad’s affections are somehow keyed into academic performance. Of course, no loving parent would intentionally make such a suggestion. But until that frontal lobe of the brain is fully developed (about age 24, I’m sorry to say), children feel and intuit much more than they are able to think and reason. Let’s leave no doubt in their tender hearts and minds that they are loved beyond comprehension and we, their parents, have only the greatest confidence that they will land well and find their unique place in this world. Mr. Lyle Green is a counselor and psychology teacher at Westminster Christian School in Palmetto Bay.

The Truth About Hospice
A
DMITTING A PATIENT TO HOSPICE DOES NOT MEAN GIVING UP HOPE. Hospice care provides pain and symptom management and appropriate palliative care when curative medical treatments no longer enhance the patient’s quality of life. The focus of care shifts toward helping the patient achieve maximum quality of life from a physical, emotional and spiritual perspective. Hospice programs provide medication to manage symptoms related to the primary illness. Each patient receives the medical equipment and supplies necessary to enhance overall comfort and safety including, but not limited to, hospital beds, bedside commode, an over bed table, oxygen, and dressing supplies. When finding a Hospice program for you or a family member, it is important to ask about the levels of care that particular Hospice program offers.
Hospice Care of South Florida, for example, provides four levels of care: 1. 2. 3. 4.
Routine Home Care Continuous Care at Home General Inpatient Care Respite Care
Routine home care provides patient care availability wherever the patient considers home, including a residence, skilled nursing facility or assisted living community. New generations often opt for the option of staying at home during their final moments or when seriously ill, with their family by their side. “Everybody agrees that they don’t want to be in the emergency room and they don’t want to come into
the hospital,” says Amy Kelley, MD, associate professor in the department of geriatrics and palliative medicine at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. Hospice provides the opportunity for a person to spend their last moments where they feel most comfortable. Continuous care at home means hospice provides medical management at the home 24 hours a day. During times of crisis, when death is impending or the patient has worsened, hospice provides additional services to allow the patient to remain at home. A patient may also be admitted to general inpatient care if there are certain medical needs that cannot be managed at home. Finally, respite care is when a hospice program provides a short-term accommodation of the patient in order to provide temporary relief to caregivers. Oftentimes, the caregiver’s own health declines due to stress and lack of time to care for himself. When a family needs a “break” some hospice programs will offer respite care to give them an opportunity to rest. Breaks are necessary for the caregiver to refresh and return to the patient with a stronger and revitalized ability to care for him or her. In hospice care, the caregiver/hospice aid is in constant communication with the rest of the team to identify physical and emotional changes. The program also teaches families how to meet the physical and emotional needs of the patient, as well as to provide ongoing support and education. For more information on Hospice of South Florida, please call the 24-hour phone line at 305-591-1606 or visit www.hospicesouthflorida.org.

Why it’s Time to Rethink How We Sell Our Homes BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
F
OR REALTOR ROSIE CRUZ-SOTERO, SELLING HOMES COME DOWN TO ONE thing: customer experience. The former marketing professional (she worked on consumer experience programs for Fortune 500 companies), says approaching real estate from a new angle can drastically change seller—and buyer—attitudes and, more importantly, outcomes. “You can think of it in similar terms as going into a store to buy something,” says Cruz-Sotero. “It’s the same thing with a home in the sense that a buyer needs to be attracted and we can influence their purchasing behavior.” Cruz-Sotero, who grew up in South Florida, sees three main steps in rethinking real estate marketing: pricing the property correctly, attracting the right buyer with smart marketing and finally making the property available for interested buyers. Here’s how Cruz-Sotero is applying her targeted experience to help clients.
Pricing A major sticking point for most sellers, setting the correct price can set the tone for the entire marketing plan of a property, according to Cruz-Sotero. “You only have one chance to create a good impression—and buyers are going to be attracted to a price,” she says. With most buyers having a set budget, pricing a property too high means it will either turn buyers off or not show up on their radar at all. The argument for decreasing the price later is another common misconception, says Cruz-Sotero. “People are looking for what’s hot, what just came on the market. If you decrease the price later you’ve missed out on the first impression… buyers will think ‘What’s wrong with this house- why has it been on the market so long.’” And just as anyone would shop around for the best price on a big-ticket item, home buyers are savvier than ever when it comes to knowing what a property is worth. “Buyers have tech tools at their fingertips,” says Cruz-Sotero. “They will not overpay for something that they don’t think will appraise and will compromise their loan.” On the flip side, while pricing a property fairly will draw buyers, going low may see a seller leaving money on the table.
“What I like about real estate is that, more than anything, I’m able to help sellers and buyers using all of the skills I’ve acquired in my past experience -from contract negotiations to creating marketing plans. I’m able to think more outside the box.” 22
The Florida Villager
Marketing “No two homes are the same,” says CruzSotero. “So there should be a difference in marketing plans from home to home.” Cruz-Sotero’s own experience in event marketing and consumer experience helps her draw on new ideas for attracting not just any buyer… but the correct buyer. “Much as we may not think about it that way, our house is a product and its audience is going to change according to the product. Think wedding dresses versus activewear — vastly different audiences.” To find that audience Cruz-Sotero suggests looking at what sets each home apart (often known in marketing circles as “points of differentiation”). Tennis courts or golf courses can draw sports-minded buyers, large yards and green spaces may be appealing to young
12.2015
families and proximity to hospitals can often be attractive to medical professionals. And thinking outside the proverbial box can extend beyond the confines of South Florida. “Nowadays you can’t discard the global audience.”
Availability For Cruz-Sotero, nothing is more frustrating than finding a buyer interested in a property… and not being able to show it to them. Having a home available via both seller and realtor can often make or break a sale. Cruz-Sotero likens it to calling a restaurant for reservations and having no one answer the phone. She also advises clients to depersonalize the space — allowing buyers to picture themselves in the home. “Having the home show ready everyday is important,” says Cruz-Sotero. Having it clean, tidy and rid of pet-related scents can help the home shine. “Once it is ready you want to guarantee a great buyer experience,” she says. That means candles, bright spaces, even calm music in the background. “The experience helps the buyers envision themselves pleasantly in that space,” she says. “I think that’s important.” Rosie Cruz-Sotero is a Realtor® with The Keyes Company, part of the Leading Real Estate Companies of the World. STEM Private School Prepares Students for College BY TATSUYE KAMITAKI
I
S YOUR CHILD SUCCEEDING IN SCHOOL? ARE YOU HAPPY WITH YOUR CHILD’S academic performance at their Middle School? Is your child’s school preparing them for college? If you are unable to confidently answer yes to these questions, then you may want to reconsider your child’s academic options. Many schools offer classes that meet the STEM curriculum; however, the instructional methods do not meet every child’s need. MLC Preparatory Academy offers a modern curriculum to students grades six through 12. Prospective students can enroll in STEM courses that enable them to explore advanced subjects including space science, robotics, and technology. At MLC Prep, students enjoy small-class size and a customized curriculum that ensures students stretch themselves to meet their working capacity and continue their academic pursuits. MLC instructors pledge to motivate students who reserve their power to do more, and assist them in developing an academic focus that explores all opportunities.
Our Flexibility & Dedication
Makes Us a #1 Choice Increased awareness and investment in science and math is not only changing today’s modern curriculum, but expanding the innovation economy. According to the Department of Commerce, jobs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) have grown three times faster than other occupations and will continue to grow at a rate of 17 percent. Consequently, many high schools are adopting the curriculum in an effort to meet future demands. An early educational foundation is paramount for a successful STEM career. Students taking a handful of STEM credits at the high school level are not adequately prepared for the college coursework and track that qualifies young professionals for careers within our innovation economy. MLC prep’s curriculum is enhanced with activity-based learning benchmarks that make STEM learning fun, educational, and rewarding. Activities are categorized as Science, Technology and Engineering, Math, or a combination of these. Short projects are developed as part of the classroom experience; whereas the long projects are built to encourage the participation of students who are rewarded for their ingenuity and creativity. Students should embrace their educational experience. A child’s education should be unique and personalized and if it’s not, it may be time for a change. Give them a chance to regain initiative and the confidence needed for academic success. MLC Preparatory Academy is located at 7701 SW 76th Ave., Miami, FL 33143. For more information on the school, please call 305.605.8081, or visit www.mlcprepacademy.com.
MLC Preparatory Academy is a private school with an academic curriculum built to fit the individual needs of each student, grades 6 to 12. Our students benefit from a small class size matched with a cutting edge curriculum. The program is designed to enhance each student's learning potential and vows to optimize their standardized scores and grade point averages. At MLC Prep, students receive the highest level of academia.

Rice House of Kabob BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
R
EZA SHABANI HAS A LOT OF EXPERIENCE BEING at the heart of a family-run business. The Rice House of Kabob owner and his three brothers have spent much of their business lives working together on one project or another. In fact, the four brothers, who have owned everything from an Italian restaurant to a deli, bring a collective 30 years of experience in the food business. But ten years ago the Shabani team placed their focus squarely on developing a single concept: fast casual Persian food. “The food itself is what we serve in our country everyday,” says Shabani, whose latest –and sixth—location of the popular chain recently opened in South Miami. The menu itself is overflowing with favorites like falafel, charbroiled chicken breast, Greek salad, hummus, grilled veggies and basmati rice and takes special care to feed the oft-neglected vegetarian contingent. “Most businesses find keeping vegetarian dishes on the menu to be tough, but we do think it’s important as we get quite a bit of response from that as people are eating
26
The Florida Villager
12.2015
less meat,” says Shabani. “We are planning to expand even more, to continue to add and play with the menu.” The concept was born ten years ago, when the brothers noticed that there was no quick service concept bringing fresh, authentic Persian food. The first location opened in Miami Beach, with Doral soon following as well as Brickell, North Miami and Kendall over the next decade. When it came time to move South Shabani says they jumped on the opportunity to take on the prime space on US1. “It took us a year to convert the space,” he says. “We basically started with just a shell.” But since the opening in October, Shababi says they’ve had an incredible response from the South Miami community—and beyond. “We’re so happy to be getting a lot of the businesses around the area for lunch and then many families at dinner time. A lot of the customers have known about us from other locations and have been customers for many years,” he says. One of the draws for those loyal customers is Rice House of Kabob’s dedication to quality ingredients. “We make everything fresh everyday,” says Shabani. “In fact, South Miami is our central location where we make everything that goes out to the other stores.” That includes hummus, yogurt and falafel from scratch as well as their signature Sumac Sauce and other in-the-making treats. “We test everything in our kitchen and once it gets to the restaurant there’s nothing frozen, no microwaves and no heating lamps.” The next phase for Shabani and his brothers may mean a Rice House of Kabob even farther south…and north, with the family scouting locations everywhere from Pinecrest to Broward. (“It’s all about the right match,” he says.) But for now Shabani encourages the community to stop by their latest location to experience it for themselves. And as for the million-dollar question? “From my perspective, I would recommend
the chicken,” says Shabani, laughing. “It’s white meat, chicken breast only. It’s the most popular. People get really excited — the way we cook it has gotten a really positive response.” Rice House of Kabob locations include: Brickell (50 SW 10th Street, Miami, FL 33130, 305-755-9588), Doral (1450 NW 87th Avenue, Doral, FL 33172, 305-418-9464), Kendall (13742 SW 56th Street, Miami, FL 33175, 305-387-6815), Miami Beach (1318 Alton Road, Miami Beach, FL 33139, 305-531-0332), North Miami (14480 Biscayne Boulevard, North Miami, FL 33181, 305-944-4899), & South Miami (5818 South Dixie Hwy, Miami, Fl 33143, 305-665-4370). How Pilates Can Help Beef Up Your Bones BY STEPHANIE SPROUT, DPT
5
4 MILLION AMERICANS (MEN AND WOMEN) HAVE LOW bone mass which places them at an increased risk for osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by too little bone formation, excessive bone loss, or a combination of both, leading to bone fragility and an increased risk of fractures. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, approximately one in two women and up to one in four men age 50 and older will break a bone due to osteoporosis. That information should motivate people to seek preventative measures for this disease, right? Well, we have good news... and great news for you. The good news is that by reading this article you will have a better understanding of the disease and how to manage it. You are in the right place to learn how to take control of your bone density There are two types of exercises that are important for building and maintaining bone density: weight-bearing (high or low impact) and muscle-strengthening exercises. However, an unsung hero/third type of exercise that is VITAL in the osteopenic/osteoporotic population is balance! (Falls are the #1 cause of fractures in the osteoporotic population). And now for the great news…Pilates addresses all of these types of exercise and is incredibly beneficial not only for mitigating your risk of osteoporosis, but slowing down or even reversing bone density loss if you already have degenerative changes. It’s a beautiful combination of weight-bearing exercises (think scooter and plank), muscle-strengthening exercise via resistance training ( pulling straps, foot work or feet in straps) and balance training (standing and high-kneeling exercises). Pilates has gotten a bad rap in the management of osteoporosis, as people think it’s only about forward flexion (bending – which can be dangerous for individuals with osteoporosis)- and this is simply not true. Yes, there are Pilates exercises that should be avoided by individuals with osteoporosis, but a well-trained instructor will know how to modify the class/program to not only keep the client safe but actually help manage the disease. Want to take control of your bone density or even prevent bone loss from occurring? Visit our Coconut Grove, or brand new South Miami, location to help us get you started on a structured program designed specifically for your needs.

R E AL ESTAT E TALK
Paradise with a Cherry on Top, Miamians! BY FRANK DEVALDIVIELSO
T
HE NEWS IS EVERYWHERE, MIAMI IS A GREAT CITY TO live in. The hot weather, the nature, the arts, the beaches, the restaurants, the events, sans state tax, and the cherry on top is the wonderful Miamian. Yes, you that live here, no matter where you came from! The real estate market benefits directly from you and how we all interact with each other and with visitors. In 2014 “The New York Times” published a report stating that only thirty-six percent of the population in Florida has been born in Florida. About 13 percent of that population lives in Miami-Dade County and I propose that more than half were not born in Miami. Witness how many accents from throughout the country one can hear in a single day? New England, Boston, the South, New York, Chicago. Add the west-Indian accents, the British and boy are we melting! Non-native Miamians have multiple accents in Spanish too. From Argentina to Spain, South America, North America and the Caribbean. Miami is developing its own dialect, with body language and gestures included. Where else will you kiss someone on the cheek that you’ve just met for the first time, and not think twice?
Art Basel in December brings folks from throughout the world, flocking to Miami for the events and finding themselves greeted by locals with open arms, warm hearts, smiles and the willingness to extend a helping hand. Prepare your answer for when you hear the inevitable question, “Is it always this nice here?” At a recent Miami Dolphins game a family from Berlin including three young adult children were pleasantly greeted by a man wearing a UM Cap and Dolphins shirt sitting in the row in front of the family. He spoke with them in fluent German and spent time ensuring they understood the rules of the football game. That’s a Miamian! Miamians are angels, too. There are prayer chains supporting each other throughout the community. Behold people at places of worship that give of themselves, truly for their fellow man. Appreciate the volunteers at not-for profit organizations that dedicate some of their time for all of us to benefit. Check out the results of their work… take the The Deering Estate. It’s historic in archaeology and hosts several of South Florida’s natural ecosystems. Nearly 70 different species of birds were seen and documented on one recent tour. The 100 Ladies of Deering are working on making it even more beautiful with furnishings for the main house. There are so many altruistic people at work, and we are grateful. Miamians are proud stewards of this city. We delight in presenting our town to newcomers, no matter their interest. From the beaches of Sunny Isles to the tacos in Homestead. Our own daughter hosted two fellow FAU students for a couple of days in November to see this town. Of course, they loved it. The next generation also knows how fortunate we are to live here. It’s no wonder we are enjoying a real estate market with a healthy trend on prices for both homeowners and buyers. Miami vis-à-vis other similar size cities offers a great selection of homes and prices for buyers looking to have a primary or secondary home. It also affords sellers the opportunity to move to a new home, whether in Miami or, not. Let freedom ring! Frank DeValdivielso, a member the Miami FL Team and The Keyes Company, is based out of 2423 Le Jeune Road, Coral Gables, FL 33134. Go from Wrinkle to Twinkle with Nonsurgical Facial Treatments BY AMARYLLIS PASCUAL, MD
L
ET’S FACE IT (PUN INTENDED): You no longer look like you once did. Your face has wrinkles and brown spots, and is beginning to sag. Your eyes look tired, your cheeks are droopy and your lips look shriveled. Every time you look in the mirror you cannot help but want to look young again. With services ranging from Botox to Fraxel to fillers, ResultsMD is the fountain of youth to help you rejuvenate your face. Some of the first “gray hairs” of the face itself are wrinkles. To combat this obvious sign of aging, ResultsMD offers Botox treatment. Botox is a natural protein that is injected into the wrinkled areas of the face to relax the muscles, which smoothens the skin and eliminates the most problematic lines around the eyes, brows, and forehead. The procedure, which only takes a few minutes, produces results noticeable within three-tosix days. Dr. Soler-Baillo and Dr. Pascual recommend that in order to prevent lines and wrinkles from reappearing, patients should receive touch-ups three to four times a year. One of the most revolutionary treatments available to
treat a wide variety of facial flaws is Fraxel laser. With a patient downtime of no longer than two days, Fraxel laser acts to treat signs of aging including wrinkles to brown spots. It even improves acne scars left from your younger years! Fraxel laser treatments stimulate the body’s own natural healing process by using thousands of tiny pinpoint laser beams that penetrate the skin’s surface. The old, damaged skin cells are eliminated, replaced with fresh, healthy, glowing cells. For optimum results, Dr. Pascual recommends between three-to-six treatments spaced two to six weeks apart. To complete the nonsurgical facial rejuvenation trifecta, ResultsMD offers FDA-approved cosmetic
fillers. Those fillers, such as Juvéderm, act to smooth and soften facial wrinkles, lines, folds, and scars as well as restore volume to hollow cheeks. Although the duration of results varies depending on the specific filler used, most last between six months and one year. An additional use of these fillers is to enhance the lips, making them plumper and more alluring. Lip enhancement results are noticeable immediately, and some swelling is expected. With more than a decade of combined experience in improving the aging face, Dr. Soler-Baillo and Dr. Pascual of ResultsMD are dedicated to helping patients meet both surgical and nonsurgical needs. If a facelift is not what you need ,or are looking for, ResultsMD’s non surgical facial treatments might be just what the doctor ordered. Dr. Amaryllis Pascual opened PascualMD Cosmetic Surgery and Weightloss Center in 2005. Dr. Pascual has now joined forces with Dr. Jose Soler-Baillo to form ResultsMD Cosemetic Surgery. Dr. Pascual has performed over 750 liposuction and fat transfer surgeries. She also oversees multidisciplinary practices including: internal medicine, weight loss and plastic and bariatric surgery. You can reach Dr. Pascual at 305.661.1996 or visit resultsmd.com for more information.

URGICAL AND THERAPEUTIC LASERS ARE COMMONLY used in Veterinary medicine. Therapeutic laser (or “low level laser (LLL)”) in particular, is a revolutionary modality within the field of animal rehabilitation. It was approved by the FDA for animals in 2002. However, it’s been used in animals for many years in other parts of the world. Randomized controlled trials and literature reviews support the effectiveness of this type of laser in animals. Laser therapy uses a beam of laser light to penetrate tissues without damaging them. It induces a cellular response known as photobiomodulation that leads to pain control, reduction of inflammation and increase in the speed of tissue healing. Laser therapy has shown to improve tendon lesions and chronic arthritis and induce healing in bone fractures. It has also been shown to be effective in healing peripheral nerve injuries and spinal cord lesions. Therapeutic lasers should never be administered directly to tumors or the skeletal growth plates of young animals. Therapeutic laser machines come in a wide range of powers. The laser light is delivered into the affected tissue through a noninvasive probe similar to an ultrasound probe. Animals receiving treatment will experience nothing more than a gentle, warm massaging sensation at the targeted site. Most treatments take a matter of minutes. Each treatment protocol is uniquely formulated by a certified rehabilitation veterinarian for each individual patient and their condition. Treatments for various afflictions vary in frequency, complexity and cost. In our practice, the therapeutic laser is one of the most used treatment modality for patients with arthritis and those with spinal cord injuries. We use it on daily basis for surgical wounds, traumatic wounds, abscesses, ear infections, topical dermatitis (“hot spots”), cystitis, and many other inflammatory conditions. We have successfully administered laser therapy to a number of patients at Zoo Miami including elephants, giraffes and koala bears. Laser therapy represents a surgery-free, drug-free, non-invasive alternative for pain and inflammation reduction especially for pets that are not surgical candidates and unable to take pain medications due to their adverse effects or concurrent disease. Laser therapy is an effective complementary modality within an integrative medicine plan. Seek a veterinarian certified in animal rehabilitation with the acquired skills and experience necessary for laser therapy to create a plan of treatment for your pet’s condition.

Frank Istueta Founder & President Istueta Roofing
Wishing you peace of mind,
The best way to prevent "surprise" problems with your roof is to have it professionally inspected. So this month we're offering (10) NO-COST, NO-OBLIGATION Istueta Roof Quality Inspections™. Call today to secure the peace of mind you deserve.
Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Frank Istueta. I started Istueta Roofing in 1985 and for over 30 years we’ve had the honor of working with thousands of South Florida homeowners.
NOW HERE'S THE GOOD NEWS: You can prevent all of this future pain and heartache, dead in it’s tracks, RIGHT NOW.
By the time you see that you have a leak it’s already too late. Moisture has long been working around the clock quickly stripping years of life away from your roof and stealing your hard-earned money even faster, without you knowing it. Money you’d rather spend on a family vacation, a new car, your children(s) expensive college education, or perhaps that condo on the beach you’ve always dreamed of.
The bad news: Before you ever realize your roof is leaking, the damage has been done. Years of life have been ripped away from it and it’s going to cost you.
You've most likely never thought twice about it. “Out of sight, out of mind” as they say, right? That is until the moment you see a stain on your ceiling, or worse, have water leaking into your home.
Chances are you haven’t had a professional roofing contractor inspect or perform routine maintenance of your roof since it was installed. And that could be a BIG problem.
