Happy Valentine’s Day!
F
EBRUARY IS ONE OF OUR FAVORITE MONTHS HERE AT THE FLORIDA VILLAGER! For starters, we love the excitement of Super Bowl Sunday and all the fun surrounding the big game. And although we believe love should be celebrated year round, we look forward to any excuse to spoil our loved ones, especially on Valentine’s Day. In honor of this great holiday, we invite you to read this month’s special feature “The Business of Love,” introducing you to local couples who share more than just a last name (page 18). And if you’re thinking about surprising your significant other with a romantic getaway, don’t miss the article “Love Retreats in Florida,” and read about some hidden gems in the Sunshine State (page 24). Lastly, for anyone shopping for baby essentials, especially expecting or new parents, check out this month’s ‘It’s Their Business” featuring Nini and Loli, your one-stop shop for everything baby related (page 22). We’re happy to announce that voting has once again started for The Florida Villager’s Best of the Best Reader’s Choice Awards. This is a Special Edition that will be coming out in May. There are two ways to cast your vote: either fill out and mail in the vote form on page 28, or vote online at www.thefloridavillager.com/bestof. As always, be sure to check out our Events Calendar on page 6, for a comprehensive list of happenings around town. And don’t forget to connect with us via
social media. You can find us on Twitter (@FloridaVillager), Facebook (The Florida Villager), Instagram (@thefloridavillager), and Google + (The Florida Villager). You can also find an online version of our publication at TheFloridaVillager.com. Sincerely,

Who says the South Beach Food & Wine Festival is just for adults? Kids who cook (and their parents) can enjoy another aspect of the festival via Jungle Island’s ninth annual “Fun and Fit as a Family” event, sponsored by Badia Spices and featuring the Goya Foods Kidz Kitchen from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on February 27 & 28. For $20 kids can get up close and personal with Food Networks stars like Todd English, Duff Goldman and former Dolphins player (and host of “BBQ Blitz”) Eddie Jackson. Kids ages six and up can also experiment with all the major food groups in a total of eight Whole Foods Market Food Labs, taught by several acclaimed local chefs in addition to cookbook author and Nickelodeon star Reed Alexander. In a new format that encourages team camaraderie, children will prepare hands-on recipes using fresh and healthy ingredients and cook together right at their table. “The opportunity to change the mindset of kids and their parents and also promote healthier eating habits is truly what makes Fun and Fit as a Family an extraordinary event,” says Christopher Gould, Jungle Island’s managing director.
A new service being offered by the City of Coral Gables allows public electronic comments (eComments) on an agenda-related item when a City Commission Meeting Agenda is published online. The eComment link can be found at www.coralgables.com/ecomments and is available only once the agenda is published and prior to the City Commission meeting taking place. All comments and information received as part of eComments will become part of the official public record. “With today’s busy schedules, it’s difficult for members of the community to attend public meetings, speak during public comment periods and stay involved in the governing process. With eComments, the public can voice their opinions with a click of a button,” says Coral Gables City Clerk Walter Foeman, the administrator of eComments. eComment is a web-based form that is integrated with the Coral Gables City Commission Meeting published agenda. Residents can review agenda item details, indicate their position on an item and leave feedback. All comments will be consolidated into a report and delivered to City officials prior to a meeting, helping them better understand the views of their constituents.
MDCPS SCHOOL BOARD APPROVE TWO NEW ITEMS The School Board unanimously approved two items proposed by Board Chair Perla Tabares Hantman in early January. The first item promotes the 2016 College Fair scheduled for Sunday, February 21, 2016. “The College Fair provides parents and students with excellent information about educational opportunities and choices,” said Ms. Hantman, who has co-chaired the fair’s local committee for 20 consecutive years. “It is a wonderful way for them to become informed and discover their options for post-secondary education.” The second item endorses March 2016 as “Arts in Our Schools Month.” “The arts have been shown to develop a child’s self-esteem and sharpen their critical-thinking skills, as well as increasing multicultural awareness, technical, communication and expressive skills,” said Hantman, a long-time supporter of arts education.

CGAF Celebrates 53 Years of Grove Art With 2016 Lineup BY TFV STAFF
F
OR THE 53RD YEAR IN A ROW, THE COCONUT GROVE ARTS FESTIVAL WILL celebrate Presidents Day Weekend by hosting more than 350 internationally recognized artists along the Arts Festival’s 1.2-mile stretch. Narrowed from more than 900 global applicants, the chosen artists will represent the Arts Festival’s 14 categories: 2D Mixed Media, Painting, Photography, Digital Art, Printmaking & Drawing, Watercolor, Claywork, Glass, Fiber, Jewelry & Metalwork, 3D Mixed Media, Sculpture and Wood. “New & Emerging” artists between the ages of 18 and 29 will also take their place at the festival, exhibiting at their first outdoor fine arts festival at a minimal cost. All 45 of last year’s award winners will return to this year’s event, while nearly 23 percent of participants are brand new to the festival. On the local register, 83 artists are from Florida with 24 of these artists representing South Florida. The festival also continues a newer tradition, partnering for the second year in a row with Miami New Times to offer three days of live entertainment at the Peacock Park main stage. ““We are very excited about this year’s partnership,” said Miami New Times publisher Adam Simon. “New Times has the pulse of the local music scene, and by curating the music lineup, we hope to put a spotlight on one of the many elements that make up this great festival.” The lineup will see Nth Power headline Saturday’s performance with the quartet playing their signature blend of funky soul, rock, R&B, jazz, Gospel, folk and World Beat. Also on tap Saturday are The London Souls, a New York City-based rock band comprised of Tash Neal and Chris St. Hilaire, which draws influence from the driving force of such British rock pioneers Cream, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles and Hollies. Sunday brings Atlanta sister duo Larkin Poe (think American Roots sounds and strong southern harmonies), who boast not only a lofty resume backing everyone from Elvis Costello to Conor Oberst but a claim to being descendant of famed poet Edgar Allen Poe. Finally, Monday will see headlining performances from Grammy and Latin Grammy nominated Locus Por Juana bringing their distinct sound defined by musical influences from Miami and the Caribbean islands including Reggae, Raggamuffin, and Dub from Jamaica along with Hip-Hop, Rock and Funk. “Each year we like to introduce elements to our programming that can offer our festival patrons something engaging and different from their previous experience,” said Festival President Monty Trainer. “The three-day series of live music curated by Miami New Times is definitely one of our attendees’ newest favorites!” For more information or for tickets, please visit cgaf.com.

The Business of Giving BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
NAME:
Gene Schaefer Miami Market President, Co-head of the Southeast Region for Global Commercial Banking, Bank of America CAUSES:
United Way; The Bank of America Charitable Foundation BACKGROUND: For Gene Schaefer, philanthropy isn’t just a weekend passion. As Miami Market President and Co-head of the Southeast Region for Global Commercial Banking at Bank of America, Schaefer is involved in charitable giving on a daily basis via his own commitment to the Untied Way (he recently concluded a two-year term as chairman of the board) and his involvement in the bank’s charitable foundation. But Schaefer’s philanthropic roots are deep, beginning with March of Dimes walks in grade school and even watching Jerry Lewis’ famous telethons for Muscular Dystrophy. “It was kind of a family thing and we would always call in with a pledge, no matter the size, to help Jerry hit a new fundraising record,” he says. Joining Bank of America only solidified his efforts. “[Bank of America] is involved with many Miami-Dade nonprofits through our charitable foundation, which in 2015 provided more than 50 Miami organizations with approximately $1.7 million in grants to support their missions and operations.” ABOUT THE UNITED WAY AND BOA CHARITABLE FOUNDATION: Schaefer says his experiences with the United Way have given him a firsthand look into the organization’s quest to make a difference in the community. “One experience that particularly stands out for me is Bank of America’s direct involvement with United Way through our seed funding to open the Center for Financial Stability in North Dade six years ago – that was truly remarkable,” he says. He also points to work with the Overtown Youth Center as well as a commitment via Bank of America to working with military men and women, providing them with support as they transition back into civilian life. Habitat for Humanity also plays a role in Schaefer’s community support. “Habitat for Humanity home builds are also incredibly impactful,” he says. “Not only for the homeowners, but for our volunteers who become first-hand witnesses to the importance of making a difference in the community.”

UPCOMING PLANS: The BoA team is currently gearing up for the Miami Dolphins Cancer Challenge at Sun Life Stadium on February 20, as both sponsors and volunteers, another way Schaefer is able to introduce friends and family to the many “needs and issues in our community.” In addition to his own desire to give back, Schaefer gives much credit for his efforts to the culture of giving that permeates his workplace. “We are also gearing up for Bank of America’s Global Service Month in April,” says Schaefer. “Each year, hundreds of employee volunteers participate in a variety of events throughout April addressing areas such as financial literacy, housing, hunger, jobs, and the environment.”
‘‘
I am continuously moved by the passion and dedication of those who lead Miami’s nonprofits and see the results of their efforts on a daily basis, including the dedication of the number of committed volunteers who contribute not only funding, but their time and skills to these organizations.”

ULLIVER’S CHESS TEAMS FINISHED IN THE TOP FIVE AT THE UNITED STATES Chess Federation’s 2015 National K-12 Championships. With more than 1,500 chess players from around the nation competing, Gulliver fielded teams in various divisions at the weekend-long event, held last month in Orlando. Gulliver’s chess program focuses on encouraging analytical and thinking skills. As students develop these skills, they learn to use them to drive their decision-making – in chess and in every other area of their lives. The program builds on research that shows how chess improves children’s critical thinking and problem-solving skills, including research from America’s Foundation for Chess (AF4C) that shows chess players demonstrate higher math and reading test scores. Gulliver’s program seeks to help students develop skills that are key to success in the 21st century. “I am extremely proud of the performance of our chess teams,” said Randall Smith,

The Business of Love
DAY IN AND DAY OUT, MEET THE COUPLES WHO SHARE MORE THAN JUST A LAST NAME. BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
FRANK AND LIEDE DEVALDIVIELSO
CLARINES VALENZUELA & ROBERTO ECHEVARRIA
For Frank and Liede DeValdivielso home is where the heart—and the business—is, literally. The realtors, who work under The DeValdivielso Team, became partners almost a decade ago, when Liede grew her business to a point that Frank says “it made sense to join in and continue our growth together.”
Valenzuela and Echevarria’s work partnership actually began before the couple began dating, when business projects brought them together via their own companies. When romance intervened with business, Clarines says merging personal and professional was a natural fit. “It happened spontaneously, as we complement each other well, and shared a purpose and vision in life and a passion for community involvement through communications and natural health,” she says. Today the two own two businesses together, Qlic Solutions, dedicated to providing video production, communications, and marketing to small businesses; and holistic center Zenzations.
Married: 26 years Working Together: 9+ years
Together: 42 years Working Together: 42+ years
What’s the best thing about working together? FRANK: We tag-team priorities and tasks, both at work and at home. There is no need to double check any work… it’s always done right. We have different skill sets that complement each other well. Each one of us can focus on our individual strengths with full support of the other.
What’s the best thing about working together? CLARINES: Our passion for making the best of this passing existence has always been a team effort; it brings joy into our life. Working together adds yet another dimension to our relationship and a special connection that helps us understand and support each other.
KATIE AND MARK KESSLER
LINDSEY AND RYAN LAMCHICK
It was fate that brought the Kesslers, owners of promotional products company HSA Enterprises, from life partners to business partners in 1998. “We had a need for a finance and accounting person at HSA and Mark was traveling a lot in his current job,” says Katie, HSA’s president. “He wanted to stop traveling and we wanted to start a family. It was important to both of us that he be home and not on the road.” Agrees Mark, “The time was right to make a change and join the family business!”
After years of law careers in big firms in South Florida, the Lamchicks came to the realization that work had overtaken their life. “We felt like the kids were closer to our nanny than to us, and knew that we needed more flexibility in our careers,” says Lindsey. It was then that the two decided to come together, blending their own legal backgrounds (Lindsey is also a licensed realtor) to start Lamchick Law Group alongside Ryan’s father, Bruce. “Having our own firm allows us to have a better work/ life balance,” says Ryan. “We can be around for our kids more; we’re able to take them to and from activities and be involved every day.”
Married: 19 years Working Together: 18 years
Married: 9 years Working Together: 3 years
What’s the best thing about working together? KATIE: We make a great team! Working together allows us to have flexible schedules when it comes to our two boys. We are able to be very involved parents yet run a successful and strong small business.
What have you learned from your partner or about your partner by working together? KATIE: He is the most patient person I know and a great teacher.
MARK: Flexibility! We have a good balance as Katie thrives in a fast-paced sales environment and I am more patient and deliberate. Different approaches with solid results.
MARK: Katie the most efficient and organized person I know. She is an excellent multitasker and knows how to prioritize tasks extremely well.
18
The Florida Villager
What have you learned from your partner or about your partner by working together? CLARINES: The core of our emotions is the realization that in giving we receive, and that life’s challenges are easier to face together. We know each other’s strengths and weakness to divide our personal and working responsibilities based on what needs to be done and our skills and interests. We also respect the importance of pursuing our individual interests, and are grateful for having a life/work partner that is very giving and supportive.
02.2016
What’s the best thing about working together? RYAN: Being around each other at work all day allows us to just enjoy our time away from working more without having to rehash the day’s events. LINDSEY: There’s no one I trust more then Ryan to do what’s best for the clients and we have the same goals. Plus there’s no better partner than your spouse to let you leave for a long lunch to take the kids to Music Together.
What have you learned from your spouse, or about your spouse, by working together? RYAN: How important her clients are to her. In fact, in the office her clients come first and I am secondary! LINDSEY: Ryan was in the business school at Syracuse [where we met] and that’s so helpful. He’s the one behind the scenes, optimizing the firm’s website, marketing, networking and making our firm grow. He takes everything very seriously and is always overly prepared. He doesn’t miss a thing.

New Year, New Studio PILATES IN THE GROVE BRINGS THEIR UNIQUE BRAND OF HEALING TO SOUTH MIAMI BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
F
OR MANY, THE IDEA OF A PILATES STUDIO CONJURES UP IMAGES OF LONG, lithe women stretching themselves into seemingly impossible positions as they maneuver within a series of weights and pulleys. They would be wrong. In reality, says Pilates in the Grove owner Christa Gurka, students are more likely to find an atmosphere of support and healing, with many regulars working to alleviate everything from back pain to sports injuries in addition to getting fit. “Our studio is very different,” says Gurka, who opened her newest studio in South Miami last month. “We’re all about bringing [Pilates] to the general population. It’s a very comfortable, very positive environment.” The South Miami studio is no exception with 1,500 square-feet of space that Gurka says reflects the attitude of her staff and students. “We searched for more than a year to find the right spot,” she says, admitting she was drawn to the final space thanks to its cozy atmosphere, ample parking and bright, window-filled rooms. “It was important to have the space speak to what we are trying to grow.” Gurka herself brings more than 15 years of experience in the wellness and physical therapy world to her own practice. When an injury sidelined the longtime athlete in college she found a new passion during her own recovery, leading to a master’s degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Miami. When Gurka found postcollegiate work in a Pilates-based outpatient facility, her fate was sealed. “We were using Pilates-based methods with all of our patients and then sending them off to local studios when their therapy was done,” says Gurka. “I thought ‘Why are we sending them somewhere else?’” Since then, Gurka has opened three studios that embody her welcoming, inclusive philosophy on fitness and healing, a Miami Beach studio in 2006 (which she eventually sold to focus on her thriving Grove business), the Grove location in 2010 and now South Miami. Through it all, Gurka has populated her studios with other professionals who share her attitudes. “Pilates in the Grove is dedicated to improving the health and wellness of the greater Miami community,” says South Miami studio manager Lauren Travis. “Our instructors and staff lead with passion, lean on our diverse experience and keep abreast of the latest techniques to provide a safe, welcoming environment for all who workout with us.” In addition to working with back issues (“Sitting has created a lot of problems,” she says) and other physical issues, Gurka and her team offer students a variety of options when it comes to beginning or continuing their Pilates work. »» Group Classes Limited to no more than eight students per class, Pilates in the Grove’s group reformer classes are kept small to ensure personalized attention, giving students the benefits of a personal training session at the class price point. Additionally, Gurka point out that many of the classes are taught by experienced physical therapists, making the group classes a good –and safe—choice for those worried about past injuries or limitations. “We get people who want to stay fit in a safe, efficient way; a way they can keep up consistently for twenty or thirty years. We teach our clients how to workout smarter, not harder.” »» Private Sessions For those looking to hone their Pilates skills, private sessions allow Gurka and her team to give individual attention and customize the time for maximum results. »» Corporate Wellness Gurka and her team work closely with various organizations to create and conduct a wide variety of on-site wellness programs, working together with business owners on everything from a single session to a series and allowing employees to develop a better understanding of how their lifestyle habits affect their energy and overall performance. »» Physical Therapy In addition to fitness students, Pilates in the Grove is a full service physical therapy center and wellness facility, bringing more than 30 years of combined experience in staff of highly trained Physical and Occupational Therapists. Gurka’s team has specialized training in Manual Therapy, Myofascial Release, Soft Tissue mobilization, Joint mobilization, Kinesiotaping, Neuromuscular Re-Education, Movement Integration and Muscle Energy Techniques.

Oh Baby: Nini and Loli Takes the Guesswork out of Shopping BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
E
VERY NEW PARENT HAS BEEN THERE. STANDING AMID ROWS OF GEAR AND apparel, drowning in strollers, cribs and high chairs, they have a moment of realization that they may just be in over their head. It’s this overwhelming experience that Nini and Loli seeks to eliminate, likening themselves to a “one-stop shop” where the first time parent can find everything that they need, eliminating the necessity to store hop and become overwhelmed with too many options. Bright, colorful and welcoming, the store (named after the owner’s children) makes a point to cater to not only new parents but also anyone in the market for children’s items. Coveted Bugaboo strollers and accessories sit comfortably next to plush animal heads, diaper bags and educational toys while those looking ahead will find will find 3-in-1 scooters, sleek humidifiers and the latest Yoyo stroller (folding so flat it can be stored in an airplane’s overhead compartment). As owners pre-select what they think are the best in a specific category, shoppers are treated to three of the best in varying price ranges rather than ten of the same thing. Helping shoppers navigate the curated offerings are Nini and Loli’s trained staff who are on hand to give first hand advice on products and help newer parents figure out exactly what they might need from nursery furniture to layette options. Nini and Loli’s owners say they are careful to make sure the store not only offers shoppers the best in every price range, but also that offerings are there when needed. With in-demand brands such as Bugaboo (the store is one of only a few in Miami to carry the brand) the store is diligent about keeping the latest colors and styles in stock…resulting in no wait for parents who are on a deadline. That dedication to customer service has helped the owners grow their business from a small storefront in Aventura to two shops totaling more than 9,000 square feet, their latest taking up 5,000-sqaure-feet in donwntown Coral Gables. In fact, the shop is now eyeing options outside the U.S. to better serve their growing

international clientele, boasting customers from Brazil, France, Mexico and more And, after 15 years in South Florida, the owners aren’t ruling out a third location in the area (South Miami and Weston are options, they say). But for now they’re happy to focus on their growing fan base and continue to bring the latest in baby gear to shoppers, crediting their success to “…hard work and being consistent… and offering great customer service.” Nini and Loli is a destination for modern expecting parents who want the best of everything a baby needs. With a large selection of baby gear, strollers, furniture, diaperbags, toys apparel, and all the baby registry basics. Nini and Loli has two locations in South Florida–Aventura: 20335 Biscayne Boulevard. OVE AND FRIENDSHIP SHOULD BE CELEBRATED YEAR round, but the month of February has been especially chosen to encapsulate, deliver and share feelings of affection and amity since the year 1400 A.D. To this end, I recently polled a few Floridians about their perfect place for a romantic getaway. So, if you desire to spend some time away with your baes this year, I invite you to consider the following hand-picked, Florida retreats:
The Standard Spa - South Beach Perhaps one of the best kept secrets in South Beach, this beautiful and serene oasis is at once accessible and secluded. Located on Belle Isle, it boasts tropical gardens, private terraces and an outdoor deck with breathtaking sunset views, all within a stone’s throw of Lincoln Road, Purdy Lounge, and the hottest Miami nightlife. Its world-class indoor and outdoor hydrotherapy experiences are complimentary to guests and include a Roman waterfall hot tub, Arctic plunge, and infinity pool. Restorative yoga sessions, mud bath tubs, and a full bar and grill make this unique and ultra chic mini paradise a place that you’ll frequent beyond your first romantic interlude. Under $300 a night, it is one of my favorite “two-day trips” in Miami. Details at standardhotels.com
Ocean Key Resort and Spa - Key West, FL If you like SoBe, then this getaway will resonate with your chic-vibe senses. It is located at the end of the worldfamous and busy Duval Street, but it is insulated enough that you will not notice it. This place is made to help you relax your senses, rejuvenate your inner self, and connect with your external space in a healthy and healing way, like Key West is known for. They boast “island luxury with barefoot elegance” in a way that is as opulent as it is natural. Some of the most sought-out suites are found in this world-class resort, from which all the waterborne amenities, like catamaran sailing, snorkeling, and jet skiing are readily accessible for you to enjoy with the object of your adoration. Key West in general has always been in my favorite top three places in Florida, and Ocean Key is among the best that can be enjoyed here. Visit oceankey.com
Watercolor Inn and Resort - Santa Rosa Beach, FL Nestled between Fort Walton Beach and Panama City, this getaway is one of the most desirable vacation destinations in the State. It is no wonder that it is the only AAA Four Diamond Rated Hotel on Northwest Florida’s Gulf Coast. The main inn boasts 60 rooms that face beaches of sugar sand and crystal blue waters. To move around the area, do as the Romans and use loaner bikes. At turndown, you and your better half will enjoy freshly baked cookies. Whether you fancy kayaking and canoeing in the morning or awe-inspiring beach walks at dusk, this top-end retreat will seamlessly combine modern amenities with the “nostalgia of an unassuming beach town from days gone by.” More at watercolorresort.com February evokes feelings that we should demonstrate year-round, but it allocates an opportunity, a specific time span so-to-speak, for planning a special experience with our loved one (or significant other). Fortunately, as Florida experts declare, we need not leave our State to transport ourselves to a retreat worthy of the apple of our eye. After all, folks worldwide come here to get away. So, fellow Villagers, enjoy the best Florida has to offer, and have a happy month of love and friendship! Luis E. Ortega is a hopeless romantic, world-travelled poet, and love philosopher. What is Hospice?
H
OSPICE IS A COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAM OF MEDICAL CARE AND SUPPORT for people nearing the end of life. The Hospice philosophy is based on several ideas: »» No one should die alone or in pain. »» Life-limiting illnesses can cause emotional and spiritual distress as well as physical pain, all of which deserve quality professional attention and compassionate care. »» A serious illness affects the entire family, not just the person who is ill. Those affected need and deserve ongoing support before and after a loved one’s death. Hospice provides pain management and appropriate palliative care, care that focuses on the patient’s comfort, when curative medical treatments no longer enhance quality of life. Hospice strives to meet the patient’s physical, emotional and spiritual needs and provides support for the entire family during the illness and for at least one year after a patient’s death. Most Hospice Care is provided at home, where people most want to be when they are ill. Hospice Care can also be provided in a nursing or residential facility and in certain circumstances, in a hospital or hospice management residence. Hospice Dr Ismael Roque-Velasco President and Chief Executive Officer also provides medications, medical Hospice Care of South Florida equipment and supplies necessary to promote comfort at home or in other Hospice settings. Hospice does not mean giving up hope. The focus shifts toward helping the patient achieve the maximum quality of life by focusing on their physical, emotional and spiritual needs.
Hospice Care vs. Standard Medical Care Some differences between Hospice Care and Medical care are: »» Hospice looks at all of the patient’s and their family’s needs. A coordinated team of hospice professionals, assisted by volunteers, work to meet the patient’s and family’s emotional and spiritual needs, as well as the patient’s physical needs. »» An emphasis is put on controlling pain and symptoms through the most advanced techniques available as well as on emotional and spiritual support tailored to the needs of the patient and their family. »» Hospice recognizes that a serious illness affects not only affects the person who is ill, but the entire family as well. The family and patient is the “unit of care” for hospice professionals. At times, other family members may actually need more attention than the patient.
Who pays for Hospice care? Hospice palliative care is covered 100% by most insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid, with no out-of-pocket costs to the patient or family. Costs covered related to the terminal illness, including the services of the Hospice team, medications, medical equipment and supplies. A New Cure For A Common Problem BY TFV STAFF
WHAT DOES THE PROCEDURE ENTAIL?
A
FFECTING ANYWHERE BETWEEN 20 TO 45 PERCENT of middle-aged and elderly women (according to the North American Menopause Society), vaginal atrophy may be the least talked about, yet most common, problem for women of a certain age. Now there is a solution! The Mona Lisa Touch is an FDA-approved medical laser available for use in the U.S., replacing past treatment options such as hormone therapies, which are often laden with side effects or contraindications. So what is the Mona Lisa Touch and how does it work? Here’s what you need to know.
Patients will receive three treatments spaced about six weeks apart. Each procedure takes only a few minutes to perform. The procedure is done in-office (patients feel only a small vibration) and requires no anesthesia or painkiller, with patients able to resume sexual intercourse after about 48 hours. After the three treatments, some patients may return for annual maintenance.
HOW FAST WILL PATIENTS FEEL THE RESULTS? Many patients experience symptom relief after just one treatment and almost all feel a difference after the second.
WHAT IS VAGINAL ATROPHY AND WHAT CAUSES IT? Vaginal atrophy is a condition often coinciding with menopause in which the vaginal walls thin and dry out, creating issues with urinary functions, dryness and tightening as well as pain during sexual intercourse. Though often painful and frustrating for sufferers, few women ask for help –or know it exists.
IS IT SAFE? A multisite study was conducted by two leading Urogynecologists who are experts in the field of postmenopausal gynecologic health; and recent results from a trial on postmenopausal women and breast cancer survivors showed positive results and high patient satisfaction.
HOW DOES THE MONA LISA TOUCH WORK? The medical laser works similar to other laser treatments, counteracting the atrophy by stimulating collagen production inside the vagina rather than altering hormone levels; essentially rehydrating, reviving dead skin and improving the condition of the vaginal walls.

Love the Home You’re With BY FRANK DEVALDIVIELSO
W
INTER IS A GREAT SEASON TO FIND THE TIME AND inspiration to take full advantage of the cool temperature and complete that project that is lingering, or, start a new one that you can accomplish on your own. Put more sweat equity into the home you love. The love is reciprocal in personal enjoyment and financial reward. The do-it-yourself projects can include painting the wood trim throughout the house, de-cluttering the “stuff” we accumulate and donating to someone in need, deep-cleaning of the bathrooms, use a caulking gun and fill in the cracks that need it, pressure cleaning the driveway and sidewalk, repaint the kitchen cabinets. For those of us that are newbies at this head to YouTube and learn how to do this from others. Love is in the details. A vintage bathroom can be attractive when the small square tile is spotless, the formica shines, the paint is fresh and there are no empty cracks in the shower stall, counter top or around the toilet. You can get another five years out of that bathroom, Ca-Ching! Speaking of money... GoldPrice. org, CNBC and Corelogic reported that in 2015 real estate values outperformed Silver, Gold, Dow Jones, SP 500 and NASDAQ with a national average of 6.8 percent return on investment. Let’s also address the white elephant in the room… mortgage rates are increasing! The rates are projected to go up to 4.7 percent by the fourth quarter of 2016. That will have an effect undoubtedly, especially for the first time buyers. Zillow reported that 70 percent of first time home buyers will continue with their home buying plans and about half of those will reconsider a smaller home or less expensive community. In Miami-Dade, inventory has leveled off at four-to-five months, where if no other home comes on the market it will take that long to sell off all of the homes that are on the market now. We’re heading towards a normal market where an average of six months is a balanced market. Buyers are buying every day. Most of us live in a home that was built more than fifty years ago and the grand dame has held strong in extreme climate conditions. Older homes tend to have amazing foliage and beautiful trees that surround them, are in well established and safe neighborhoods and have access to the best schools there are. In short, your home is very desirable to the next family that will enjoy it. We can be good stewards of the home and preserve it for the next family by taking on small projects and completing them with pride. It will also pay you back when it’s time to pass it on to the new family in our community. So, what does your honey-do list look like? Enjoy the projects knowing that your home will pay you back in personal enjoyment and in appreciating values! STEM Private School Prepares Students for College BY TATSUYE KAMITAKI
I
S YOUR CHILD SUCCEEDING IN SCHOOL? ARE YOU HAPPY WITH YOUR CHILD’S academic performance at their Middle School? Is your child’s school preparing them for college? If you are unable to confidently answer yes to these questions, then you may want to reconsider your child’s academic options. Many schools offer classes that meet the STEM curriculum; however, the instructional methods do not meet every child’s need. MLC Preparatory Academy offers a modern curriculum to students grades six through 12. Prospective students can enroll in STEM courses that enable them to explore advanced subjects including space science, robotics, and technology. At MLC Prep, students enjoy small-class size and a customized curriculum that ensures students stretch themselves to meet their working capacity and continue their academic pursuits. MLC instructors pledge to motivate students who reserve their power to do more, and assist them in developing an academic focus that explores all opportunities.
Our Flexibility & Dedication
Makes Us a #1 Choice Increased awareness and investment in science and math is not only changing today’s modern curriculum, but expanding the innovation economy. According to the Department of Commerce, jobs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) have grown three times faster than other occupations and will continue to grow at a rate of 17 percent. Consequently, many high schools are adopting the curriculum in an effort to meet future demands. An early educational foundation is paramount for a successful STEM career. Students taking a handful of STEM credits at the high school level are not adequately prepared for the college coursework and track that qualifies young professionals for careers within our innovation economy. MLC prep’s curriculum is enhanced with activity-based learning benchmarks that make STEM learning fun, educational, and rewarding. Activities are categorized as Science, Technology and Engineering, Math, or a combination of these. Short projects are developed as part of the classroom experience; whereas the long projects are built to encourage the participation of students who are rewarded for their ingenuity and creativity. Students should embrace their educational experience. A child’s education should be unique and personalized and if it’s not, it may be time for a change. Give them a chance to regain initiative and the confidence needed for academic success. MLC Preparatory Academy is located at 7701 SW 76th Ave., Miami, FL 33143. For more information on the school, please call 305.605.8081, or visit www.mlcprepacademy.com.
MLC Preparatory Academy is a private school with an academic curriculum built to fit the individual needs of each student, grades 6 to 12. Our students benefit from a small class size matched with a cutting edge curriculum. The program is designed to enhance each student's learning potential and vows to optimize their standardized scores and grade point averages. At MLC Prep, students receive the highest level of academia.

ASK T HE E XPERT
Meet You in the Bedroom BY DR. BRITTANY MARTINEZ
O
N VALENTINE’S DAY, ONCE ALL THE CHOCOLATES HAVE been consumed and each red rose delivered, where does that leave you? Hopefully it leaves you in the the bedroom, ready for an intimate session with your partner. When it comes to getting one and keeping it (an erection that is), men should opt for shifts in lifestyle and personalized therapies, such as targeted supplements and innovative pharmaceuticals to reach optimal sexual health and performance. For men, the pressure to perform can sometimes overshadow the enjoyment of sex. Thankfully, with preventative and regenerative measures, easier erections can be achieved, and maintained. Receiving regular check-ups to ensure these systems are in balance is vital to optimal sexual health. Additionally, there are various reasons why men face erectile issues. These reasons are hormonal, vascular, and psychological (which also pours into physical mechanics).
Don’t Beat the Messenger
Don’t Go Breaking My…Arteries
These days it’s common to hear “hormones” being tossed around. Hormones are messenger molecules that influence the function of cells and tissues all over the body, making them critical for sexual health and overall wellbeing. Hormonal imbalances can directly impact your sex life, health, and quality of life either for better or for worse. Due to their complexity, it is always best to seek the help of a qualified medical expert trained in natural hormones (or bio-identical hormones/BHRT) to evaluate and optimize your hormonal status.
Commonly, people hear cardiovascular and think “heart.” However, in actuality, cardiovascular issues lead to inflammation and clogging of all arteries, causing 80 percent of erectile dysfunction. A generic way to gauge if you have been affected is by your morning erections, they can be a good indicator your blood vessels are healthy. Being mindful of this might indicate that erectile difficulties can be a result of something other than vasculature. Solutions to these issues include lifestyle shifts, with diet having the largest impact. For strong erectile tissue, men should avoid high glycemic foods and trans fats (or processed foods). Consumption should also include foods that support the immune system along with regular exercise and properly used supplements and hormones. Targeted therapies such as testosterone, curcumin, and omega 3’s obtain anti-inflammatory properties, unclogging arteries.

Don’t Worry About a Thing Another main reason for erectile difficulties stem from cases where mental effects physical. Commonly, men affected have had a negative experience early on in their sexual development due to an unfavorable experience, unrealistic expectations, abuse, or other, and the trauma snowballed into a bigger issue. Normally, this issue tends to affect younger men but can occur at any age. The mental trauma creates a biochemical physical response by hijacking the body’s autonomic nervous system. In addition to daily use of adaptogens and personalized medications, exploring studied methods such as breathing techniques, yoga, and meditation successfully train men to enter parasympathetic mode (needed for erection). From stress reduction techniques to adding some romance, there are lots of easy options.
Bond…Oxy-Bond, that is. For those looking to take it up a notch, we have medicine to thank. For example, “blue diamonds,” generic Viagra (sildenafil) can now be made to be administered under the tongue, which helps dissolve faster rather than swallowing a pill, enhancing the sexual experience by increasing spontaneity. Compounded medications also allow doctors to change dosages making it a more personalized treatment. Another progressive option involves Oxytocin, a powerful hormone often referred to as, “the love drug.” Oxytocin, at a custom dose determined by your doctor if indicated, can be taken 5-10 minutes PRN (as needed) prior to sexual activity, and can be administered by nasal route or sublingually. Dr. Brittany Martinez is a licensed Doctor of Pharmacy and board certified Anti-Aging Health Practitioner, specializing in helping men and women balance their hormones, restore their energy, and rejuvenate their sex lives. T’S ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE NOT TO HEAR ABOUT STEM CELL therapy in newspapers, magazines, radio and TV. Stem cell therapy has been studied by researchers across the world, and is available for humans in many countries… but stem cell therapy for animals? Stem cell therapy falls under the discipline of Regenerative Medicine, where cells, growth factors and other natural agents are used to repair damaged tissues. It represents a breakthrough in medicine, where we no longer focus on treating the secondary effects of the degenerating tissue or organ, but instead will facilitate their regeneration. In Veterinary Medicine Stem cell therapy has been FDA approved for many years for dogs, cats and horses. It is approved so far for the management of arthritis and for injured ligaments/tendons. Once injected in the pet, the cells have the ability to turn into cartilage, ligament and bone tissue. They also will facilitate repair and regeneration of the injured site and decrease inflammation. In animals with orthopedic disease these benefits translate into decreased pain and inflammation (decreasing the need for medications) and enhanced repair of cartilage, ligament and bone injuries. So far thousands of dogs have been treated and benefited with this breakthrough therapy. Here’s how it works: A small amount of the pet’s own adipose (fatty) tissue is surgically removed to harvest the stem cells, thus eliminating potential for cell rejection and the use of embryos. The adipose tissue is sent overnight to a specialized processing veterinary laboratory, where the processing is performed under strict quality standards. The stem cells are evaluated and counted, and a specific amount of cells is placed in each dosing syringe. The dosing syringes are then sent overnight to a veterinary clinician with experience on stem cell therapy who will administer the cells guided by ultrasound directly into the affected joints. Excess cells are banked in frozen nitrogen at the processing laboratory for future use in the pet. There are companies offering equipment to process the adipose tissue at your veterinarian’s clinic. Disadvantages of this option is the lack of strict quality standards, lack of highly trained professional handling the stem cells, and the inability to evaluate the stem cells and to store the excess cells for future use. Stem cell therapy should be integrated with a comprehensive rehabilitation program by a certified veterinary rehab practitioner in order to maximize the potential of successfully managing arthritis and soft tissue injury on the pet. Like any novel therapy in high demand, it is important to find a veterinary clinician with formal training and experience in the procedure in order to obtain the best results. Stem cell therapy represents one of the few cases where -for the time being- animals have a better cutting-edge therapy available to them than any allowed to their owners. It is a real breakthrough, were the focus is not on treating the symptoms of the disease, but minimizing its progression. It provides a safer and better alternative than conventional treatments.

Cool Metal Roofing for a Hot City BY FRANK ISTUETA, OWNER, ISTUETA ROOFING
H
ERE IN OUR HOT MIAMI CLIMATE, ROOFING contractors and homeowners are changing the way they select roofing materials based on their energy efficiency. Did you know that a roof can wield the greatest impact on the energy performance of a home? Cool metal roofs – which have been designed to reflect more sunlight and absorb less heat than a standard roof - can help reduce energy consumption by lowering cooling loads. Lightly colored, more reflective roofs can save up to 40 percent in cooling energy. Just as wearing light-colored clothing can help keep you cool on a sunny day, cool roofs use solar-reflective surfaces to maintain lower roof temperatures. Cool metal roofs are ideal for Florida’s hot and humid climate, as they are most effective in areas where temperatures and air conditioning use are high. By reducing heat gain through the roof surface, cool roofs decrease air conditioning use that leads to 10-30 percent in energy savings at the hottest part of the day, when energy demand is at its peak. By 2030, our nation’s electricity demands will be 45 percent greater than today according to the Nuclear Energy Institute. And according to recent studies, if
cool roofs were installed nationwide, we would save an astonishing $1 billion in cooling costs, with $20 million in the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area alone. Coatings and finishes available today certify metal as a recognized cool roof product. In addition to being energy efficient, metal roofing is recognized as a sustainable building material for several other environmental reasons. Being a “green” building product makes it a popular choice for Miami homeowners. Cool metal roofing is available unpainted, with oven-baked paint finishes, or with granular-coated surfaces. This family of roofing can achieve solar reflectance of more than 70 percent. Reflected solar energy allows the roof surface to remain cooler, which means less heat is transferred into your home.
If You Avoid Maintenance Now...You’ll Pay Up Later! Whatever type of roof you have, it will deteriorate over time if you neglect to maintain it. Almost all of us regularly maintain and clean our vehicles in order to avoid costly problems and to keep them looking and running as best as possible for as long as possible; shouldn’t we do the same for the roofs over our heads?
Regular inspection leads to early detection of possible roof problems (that can become more costly later), protection of your valuable assets and maintenance of a safe environment for your family. Since your home represents a sizable investment (probably one of the largest you’ll make in life) - and because your roof plays such an important role in protecting you and your family - you need a professional roofing contractor who will inspect the roof and provide proof, such as photographs, of any problem areas. They should also provide a description of how the problem will be fixed, how long the repair/replacement will take and how much it will cost. A good contractor will also make recommendations to increase the lifespan of the roof. Bottom line: Proper roof maintenance – performed by an experienced professional – can save you from future heartaches, future expense and provide you with peace of mind that one of your most valuable assets remains in a healthy condition. Here's the bad news: By the time you realize you have a leak it's already too late. Moisture has already stripped years of life away from your roof and has robbed you of your hard-earned money, without you even knowing it.

Is Rapid Weight Loss Healthy? Without These Components, There’s a Slim Chance BY JOSE M. SOLER-BAILLO M.D., M.S, BOARD CERTIFIED PLASTIC SURGEON, SOUTH MIAMI, FL
S
or she not only rapidly loses weight in a safe, efficient manner, but also that the weight is kept off for good. Unfortunately, people who take a crack at fad diets or join the commercialized diet and exercise plans fail to recognize the necessity of two quintessential components of their journeys. The first is daily, attentive care provided by an expert medical physician. This type of care does not mean generic directions that have been prescribed for the general public. What I am emphasizing is one-on-one personalized care. The second key component is the follow-up care. Just as one who struggles with addiction fights temptations daily, so do weight loss patients. What matters most is that they are receiving encouragement to persevere even when they have reached their goals. In fact, just by simply adding these two components to one’s weight loss plan, it has been proven that a person can lose ten times more weight on average than those who have splurged on the leading commercialized diet and exercise plans. As you continue to work towards your weight loss goals in 2016, think ahead to the years to come. Where do you typically fall short? If you lose weight, feel great, and eventually revert to your old, bad habits, it could be that your plan is lacking these two key components to rapid, healthy weight loss. An International, multilingual Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Jose Soler-Baillo brings to South Florida a refreshing, modern approach to Cosmetic Surgery. Dr. Soler-Baillo earned his Medical Degree at the prestigious Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, trained in General Surgery at the Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey, and received extensive training in Plastic Surgery in Miami, New York, and Texas. PEED: WE ALL CRAVE IT. WHETHER IT IS THE MOST SOUPEDup car on the road, choosing expedited shipping, or sneaking into the express line at the grocery store with more than ten items, we want things done fast. Weight loss is no exception. We all want to become slimmer and healthier in 2016 but are faced daily with the ever-present conflict between speed and efficiency in this age of instant gratification. Take this as a simple example: You want to experience rapid weight loss, but you also do not have time to cook dinner after a long, busy day at work. The fast food drive thru calls your name on the drive home, you find yourself back at square one before you know it. So how exactly does one lose weight in a fast but also healthy and efficient manner without having to starve or spend hours at the gym? Unfortunately, you will not find the answer hidden in any of the most famous and “successful” weight loss programs available today. One deceiving solution that seems to be quite obvious for people who are overweight and are looking to slim down is to cut calories while hitting the gym hard daily. These “very-low calorie diets” (or “VLCD’s”) sometimes even come with medical supervision by a physician. Nearly thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours at the gym later, you may have had some success in cutting down about 15-25 percent of your body weight if a safe but inefficient manner. According to WebMD, however, “weight returns when the diet is stopped and happens rapidly; some experts say it’s best to take a more sustainable approach to weight loss comparable to that of regular diets.” So how do I define a “sustainable approach?” It all begins with close monitoring of a person’s progress on a real-time basis to ensure that he
