EBRUARY IS ONE OF OUR FAVORITE MONTHS HERE AT THE FLORIDA VILLAGER! For starters, we love the excitement of Super Bowl Sunday and all the fun surrounding the big game. And although we believe love should be celebrated year round, we look forward to any excuse to spoil our loved ones, especially on Valentine’s Day. In honor of this great holiday, we invite you to read this month’s special feature “The Business of Love,” introducing you to local couples who share more than just a last name (page 28). And if you’re thinking about surprising your significant other with a romantic getaway, don’t miss the article “Love Retreats in Florida,” and read about some hidden gems in the Sunshine State (page 44). Lastly, for anyone shopping for jewelry this Valentine’s Day, check out the very helpful article “Diamond Tips,” by Montica Jewelry owner John O’Rourke, as he explains how clarity and carat play an important role in the purchase of a diamond (page 33). We’re happy to announce that voting has once again started for The Florida Villager’s Best of the Best Reader’s Choice Awards. This is a Special Edition that will be coming out in May. There are two ways to cast your vote: either fill out and mail in the vote form on page 34, or vote online at www.thefloridavillager.com/bestof. As always, be sure to check out our Events Calendar on page 8, for a comprehensive list of happenings around town. And don’t forget to connect with us via social media. Experience Nail Care in a Whole New Way!

Who says the South Beach Food & Wine Festival is just for adults? Kids who cook (and their parents) can enjoy another aspect of the festival via Jungle Island’s ninth annual “Fun and Fit as a Family” event, sponsored by Badia Spices and featuring the Goya Foods Kidz Kitchen from 10 am to 5 pm on February 27 & 28. For $20 kids can get up close and personal with Food Networks stars like Todd English, Duff Goldman and former Dolphins player (and host of “BBQ Blitz”) Eddie Jackson. Kids ages six and up can also experiment with all the major food groups in a total of eight Whole Foods Market Food Labs, taught by several acclaimed local chefs in addition to cookbook author and Nickelodeon star Reed Alexander. In a new format that encourages team camaraderie, children will prepare hands-on recipes using fresh and healthy ingredients and cook together right at their table. “The opportunity to change the mindset of kids and their parents and also promote healthier eating habits is truly what makes Fun and Fit as a Family an extraordinary event,” says Christopher Gould, Jungle Island’s managing director.

MDCPS SCHOOL BOARD APPROVES TWO NEW ITEMS The School Board unanimously approved two items proposed by Board Chair Perla Tabares Hantman in early January. The first item promotes the 2016 College Fair scheduled for Sunday, February 21, 2016. “The College Fair provides parents and students with excellent information about educational opportunities and choices,” said Ms. Hantman, who has co-chaired the fair’s local committee for 20 consecutive years. “It is a wonderful way for them to become informed and discover their options for post-secondary education.” The second item endorses March 2016 as “Arts in Our Schools Month.” “The arts have been shown to develop a child’s self-esteem and sharpen their critical-thinking skills, as well as increasing multicultural awareness, technical, communication and expressive skills,” said Hantman, a long-time supporter of arts education.

Arsht Center Celebrates Ten Years With Ten New Commissions BY MIA HARRIS

T

HE ADRIENNE ARSHT CENTER IS CELEBRATING a decade in South Florida and to honor the occasion the Performing Arts Center will be presenting a series of 10 commissions known as 10@10 during the 2015-2016 season. 10@10 will encompass both performing and visual arts by displaying original pieces from longtime Arsht Center collaborators. Over the last decade the center has promoted the development of new work as well as provided the community with educational experiences making the performing arts accessible to all.”“As Miami has evolved into a destination for arts and culture, so has the Arsht Center as a beacon for original programming that speaks to our diverse audience,” said John Richard, president and CEO of the Arsht Center. “We have helped introduce millions to new artistic experiences on our six state-of-the-art stages and through our robust arts education initiatives and look forward to continuing to drive the development of the performing arts landscape for many more years to come.” Three of the 10 commissions will be presented in February and March starting with five highly-anticipated programs by Alvin Ailey Dance Theater, including the including the South Florida premiere of Miami’s own Robert Battle’s “Awakening,” a piece co-commissioned by the Arsht Center with lead sponsor support from Ira and Carole Hall. Awakening is the first piece created by Battle for the company since becoming artistic director. “The Arsht Center is certainly a marvelous edifice that hosts a variety of world-class performances, but, more than that, I see it as a light for the entire Miami community, which I consider my home,” said Battle. “There’s a part of me that’s still that little boy growing up in Liberty City, who remembers vividly being forever changed by what I saw and felt the first time I experienced the Ailey company as a student in Miami. I hope that my new work, with its message of rebuilding and forging ahead, continues that legacy of inspiration.” Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Photo by Andrew Eccles

The Arsht Center and Alvin Ailey will also present education and outreach programs as part of their commission, including a special presentation of Revelations on February 19th free of charge for public school students in Miami-Dade County. Additional offerings are also available during Ailey’s 2016 Miami engagement which runs from Thursday February 18th through Sunday February 21st. In March, 10@10 presents two more commissions. The first being Rubalcaba & Fernandez (Grammy-award winning pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba and Spanish singer Esperanza Fernandez) who put their spice flamenco twist on a tribute to legendary Cuban bandleader Beny More’. Hall stage on March 4th. The final installment of 10@10 in March is a visit from the Cleveland Orchestra on March 18th and 19th. Conductor Giancarlo Guerrero will lead three pieces with pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, including Franz Liszt’s second piano concerto and a new work by Avner Dorman that will celebrate the diverse influences that comprise Miami’s musical landscape. Making 10@10 even more special is the fact that this program will be one of the largest number of commissions completed in the same year by a performing arts center less than a decade old. Selling Your Luxury Home?

APPEAL TO TODAY’S

LUXURY BUYER BY ROSIE CRUZ-SOTERO, REALTOR®

You have decided to sell your luxury home. Understanding your target buyer’s needs and luxury market space will guide you through a “smooth selling”. Here are three important tips that help set the affluent buyer experience:

can envision their summertime gatherings. Emphasize the splendor of a grand formal dining room with elegant fine china place settings to help buyers envision their fine dining parties; or perhaps set the mood of a luxurious master spa suite with relaxing music and candles.

HIGH END VISUALS The affluent buyer has very unique purchasing requirements, and finding a home that embodies their lifestyle needs is a must. If a luxury home is part of a community that boasts certain amenities such as a golf course or yacht club, showcasing these features through ultra-luxe photography and virtual tour videos help make the lifestylebuyer connection.

PRICE IS RIGHT Lastly, and likely most important, is price. This may sound repetitive, but setting the right price from the beginning is just as important here as it is in any real estate market. Affluent buyers are savvy and have a distinct pulse on latest pricing trends. They have access to all the top tech tools and resources 24/7, and weigh the importance of paying fair market value for their home.

Highlighting a luxury home’s key qualities, such as a chef’s kitchen or waterfront views are equally important. These high-end amenities were cited in a Realtor.com survey among the most important features buyers consider when exploring a luxury property purchase. Working with an agent that invests in high-end photography and video technology to portray the home’s lifestyle attributes is key.

Needless to say, it is rare to find a luxury home that is identical to another, therefore knowing every amenity, custom feature and upgrade is crucial when determining the price. Consider working with an agent who is able to take these differences into account when helping you price your home.

SETTING THE STAGE Luxury buyers want to envision life at their new address. Staging a home during showings to highlight its amenities will deliver lifestyle cues to the affluent buyer. If there is a summer kitchen, consider staging it with props that showcase its use so that potential buyers

Get Fit Palmetto Bay Kicks Into Gear for 2016 BY MIA HARRIS

EAR IN AND YEAR OUT, THE number one New Year resolution’ is either “I want to lose weight” or “I want to get back in shape.” For many of us these resolutions are hard to stick by. Enter the Village of Palmetto Bay. This year the Village is looking to help residents and employees stick to those resolutions this year by hosting a yearlong series of events called “Get Fit Palmetto Bay.” Though the program kicked off on January 10th at Coral Reef Park with activities including Zumba, yoga and boot-camp demonstrations; a sand volleyball workout; sponsor tents, health screenings and a message from Mayor Eugene Flinn and council members, the Village is planning various event throughout the next few months. According to the Mayor,” the goal of the Get Fit program is to develop a Village-wide awareness of health-related issues that affect the workplace and the community in general.” Kicking off the year is Flinn’s “Mayor’s Challenge,” a seven-week program that includes Sunday Beach Volleyball at Coral Reef Park, Sunday Bike Rides with the Mayor, and Friday Kickball at Palmetto Bay Park. Those who registered by Jan. 16 (more than 30 community residents) received an initial wellness assessment which included weigh-in and body composition measurements.thanks to program partner Baptist Health South Florida in addition to a goodie bag complete with water bottle, bicycle light and discounts from local fitness- and health-based businesses.A top male and female participant will be honored at the end of the Mayor’s Challenge during the Village’s annual Celebration Picnic on March 5th. Those who missed the deadline can still reap the benefits, however. Over at Baptist Health Catherine Roach-Connor will refresh memories on the benefits of exercise, setting up seminar participants with the basics of a new exercise plan and healthy lifestyle on February 9. Then, on February 24 oncology nutrition specialists alongside Executive Chef Stan Hodes will host “Supermarket Navigation for Life,” teaching Villager residents how to make wise choices when browsing the aisles, how to shop for cancer-fighting foods, how to read a food label and more.

T HE PHIL ANT HR O PIST A person who seeks to promote the welfare of others, especially by the generous donation of money to good causes.

The Business of Giving BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

NAME:

Gene Schaefer Miami Market President, Co-head of the Southeast Region for Global Commercial Banking, Bank of America CAUSES:

United Way; The Bank of America Charitable Foundation BACKGROUND: For Gene Schaefer, philanthropy isn’t just a weekend passion. As Miami Market President and Co-head of the Southeast Region for Global Commercial Banking at Bank of America, Schaefer is involved in charitable giving on a daily basis via his own commitment to the Untied Way (he recently concluded a two-year term as chairman of the board) and his involvement in the bank’s charitable foundation. But Schaefer’s philanthropic roots are deep, beginning with March of Dimes walks in grade school and even watching Jerry Lewis’ famous telethons for Muscular Dystrophy. “It was kind of a family thing and we would always call in with a pledge, no matter the size, to help Jerry hit a new fundraising record,” he says. Joining Bank of America only solidified his efforts. “[Bank of America] is involved with many Miami-Dade nonprofits through our charitable foundation, which in 2015 provided more than 50 Miami organizations with approximately $1.7 million in grants to support their missions and operations.” ABOUT THE UNITED WAY AND BOA CHARITABLE FOUNDATION: Schaefer says his experiences with the United Way have given him a firsthand look into the organization’s quest to make a difference in the community. “One experience that particularly stands out for me is Bank of America’s direct involvement with United Way through our seed funding to open the Center for Financial Stability in North Dade six years ago – that was truly remarkable,” he says. He also points to work with the Overtown Youth Center as well as a commitment via Bank of America to working with military men and women, providing them with support as they transition back into civilian life. Habitat for Humanity also plays a role in Schaefer’s community support. “Habitat for Humanity home builds are also incredibly impactful,” he says. “Not only for the homeowners, but for our volunteers who become first-hand witnesses to the importance of making a difference in the community.”

18

The Florida Villager

02.2016

UPCOMING PLANS: The BoA team is currently gearing up for the Miami Dolphins Cancer Challenge at Sun Life Stadium on February 20, as both sponsors and volunteers, another way Schaefer is able to introduce friends and family to the many “needs and issues in our community.” In addition to his own desire to give back, Schaefer gives much credit for his efforts to the culture of giving that permeates his workplace. “We are also gearing up for Bank of America’s Global Service Month in April,” says Schaefer. “Each year, hundreds of employee volunteers participate in a variety of events throughout April addressing areas such as financial literacy, housing, hunger, jobs, and the environment.”

‘‘

I am continuously moved by the passion and dedication of those who lead Miami’s nonprofits and see the results of their efforts on a daily basis, including the dedication of the number of committed volunteers who contribute not only funding, but their time and skills to these organizations.”

F YOU HAVE A GOOD FOUNDATION, YOU CAN BUILD ON IT AND MAKE IMPROVEments with time. At Howard Drive Elementary School, this is not only true with education, but also relevant to the school’s recent construction and campus upgrades that will enhance students’ learning and teachers’ ability to set the groundwork for future success. On January 19th, a ribboncutting ceremony marked the end of construction for the school and the beginning of a new and improved chapter for the community. Speakers at the ribbon cutting included Superintendent of Schools Alberto Carvalho, Palmetto Bay Mayor Eugene Flinn, and School Board Member (District 9) Dr. Larry Feldman, who helped commemorate the event and speak about the continued evolution of education in our communities and the need to provide children with safe, nonviolent, enriching environments where they can learn and expand their minds to address the challenges of tomorrow. “In addition to our recent Cambridge status, our school’s improvements prepare us for the future and also address the needs of 21st-century learning centers,” said Howard Drive Principal Deanna Dalby. The school’s construction list of items included new windows and air conditioning units for all of the classrooms and the cafeteria, restroom renovations including ADA compliance, drainage updates, new lighting for walkways, paint for the exterior of the building, a new playground surface and the installation of much-needed new technology in the classrooms. In 2012, Miami-Dade voted to invest in our county’s schools by approving the issuance of a $1.2 billion General Obligation Bond (GOB). Many area schools received funds to improve their facilities. In specific, HDE received $2.4 million to complete its GOB construction plans. According to students and teachers, the new windows help maintain the temperature in classrooms while a/c units run more efficiently and quietly for less disruption. The bathroom makeovers have also been a sensation among the students. Also, one look at the gleeful children playing on the new playground surface will tell you that the time and effort were all worthwhile. “It’s fantastic to see the transformation of our school. These improvements have been a long time coming and are an investment in the lives of our children, families and community,” said HDE PTA President Nicole Connolly.

ST U DENT CO R NER

The Middle School Leap BY LEO GERSHMAN AND CAROLINE SOSLER

W

E STARTED PINECREST ELEMENTARY IN KINDERGARTEN at the age of five. Ms Weaver and Ms. Lundblad taught us how to read, write, add and subtract. Our ABC’s and 123’s. As we got older, the classes started to get a little harder but the teachers were still nice. It was all the same kids every year, and we pretty much all lived right by each other. Classes weren’t too hard, and we had very little homework. We always had time to do other things, such as soccer, basketball, music lessons, and hanging out at the fruit stand. Now, we are both in the sixth grade at Ransom Everglades School. Things have changed! Even though a lot of kids from our previous school came with us to Ransom, we have met lots of new people from all over Miami. Classes have gotten harder and we have more homework, but Ransom has some amazing things about it. We have PE every day, and there are team sports after school that everyone can participate in. We also have drama every day, where we learn improvisation and teamwork. The arts and computer programs are also fun and interesting. Believe it or not, one of the biggest changes in middle school is the freedom we have. For example, during lunch we get our food and eat with anyone we want. After we have finished our food, we are allowed to hang out on campus pretty much wherever we want until our next class. We play games on the football field, wall ball on the wall ball court, finish up or start homework at the library, meet with a teacher, and spend time

talking with friends at the tables in the courtyard. Everyone seems to really like the freedom and independence in middle school. Even though it is definitely more challenging, middle school is challenging us in a good way as we keep growing older.

TIM AND MICHELLE ALEXANDER

JUTTA AND MATIAS CAMPIANI

When Michelle Alexander met husband Tim in 1994 he had already begun working at Trinity Air Conditioning, the company he would eventually purchase. 12 years later, the nowmarried couple took on their current roles as President (Tim) and Treasurer (Michelle), blending their backgrounds to grow the company—and their family (they now have three children). “Working with your spouse can be tricky as it adds a layer of complexity that does not exist in many relationships,” says Michelle “We make a conscious effort to not bring personal issues to the workplace and work issues into the personal space.”

The globe trotting couple (they met as students when Jutta took a semester abroad) both bring business backgrounds to their joint endeavor, Elements Massage in Pinecrest, which they opened after pursuing their own careers in countries including Germany and South America. Their interest in health and wellness led them to Elements, where they work together to “promote and maintain wellbeing” within the community.

Married: 18 Years Working Together: 10 years

What’s the best thing about working together? MICHELLE: We really are best friends on top of being married, and while we don’t work side by side (which is probably a good thing), we do get to see each other more often than couples that don’t work together. The positive aspects of working together for us definitely outweigh any negative ones and we have learned from each other and gained a new view and dimension to our marriage bond that didn’t exist 10 years ago when we did not work together.

Married: 13 years (together for 24 years) Working Together: 2 years

What’s the best thing about working together? JUTTA: He is one of the few, if not the only person, I work with that I can trust blindly and that I know does everything possible to make our business successful. In our case, we share ethical standards and beliefs about the quality of the service we want to provide our clients. That does not mean that we never have different opinions and points of view, but that we usually find a solution that works for both of us pretty fast. MATIAS: We share more aspects of our life together. We can totally relate to what we are going through each day-- our challenges, our struggles and our successes.

FRANK AND LIEDE DEVALDIVIELSO

DR. GARY AND DALE GEGERSON

For Frank and Liede DeValdivielso home is where the heart—and the business—is, literally. The realtors, who work under The DeValdivielso Team, became partners almost a decade ago, when Liede grew her business to a point that Frank says “it made sense to join in and continue our growth together.”

Together for 50 years (they met as teens), the Gegerson’s have worked together since Gary launched his practice as an Optometric Physician in 1978, with Dale first taking on a role from home, buying frames and handling invoicing and billing while their two children were small, and eventually moving into the role of “Director of First Impressions.” Says Dale, “That’s the groundwork before patients can see the wizard. Front desk can either make it or break it. That’s where it all begins.” Gary agrees, praising his wife’s talent for helping patients select the right frames, as well as her ability to go with the flow. “We work extremely well together-- no airs, no drama, no problems and no attitude. We know what the other is thinking.”

Married: 26 years Working Together: 9+ years

What’s the best thing about working together? FRANK: We tag-team priorities and tasks, both at work and at home. There is no need to double check any work… it’s always done right. We have different skill sets that complement each other well. Each one of us can focus on our individual strengths with full support of the other.

MATIAS: After 24 years together there are not many new things to learn about Jutta. However, the experience has helped validate many of her qualities I knew she had, such as being a stickler for detail, having a good business instinct and being very caring with people.

Married: 41 years Working Together: 37 years

What’s the best thing about working together? DALE: The best part about working together is seeing how much he enjoys his patients. He truly cares about everyone. Patients come back year after year and it’s like family. We have watched patients grow up, get married and have a family.

28

What have you learned from your spouse or about your spouse by working together? JUTTA: Rather than something new it was something that was confirmed: He is a very sociable guy and a great promoter for our services.

GARY: The best thing about working together is that she has my best interest in mind and I have hers. We are working together for the same goal. We enjoy each other’s company, and I get to go home with her! DALE: Our mindset is so different as time goes by. This really isn’t just work, it’s our pleasure. We enjoy each other’s company and laugh…what’s not to like? What have you learned from working with your spouse? GARY: I have learned that I can be corrected and she is almost always right.

SELENA AND RICHARD LESSA Married: 9 years Working Together: 2 years

As the owners of freight brokerage company ROL Transport, the Lessas work with businesses to help streamline their logistics and transportation services, transporting most anything across the U.S., a business Selena joined after leaving a travel-heavy corporate career to spend more time with Richard and their two children. “We made the decision to start working together as my background could compliment his background to help to grow our business,” says Selena. “While owning and working for yourself is challenging, it has given us the freedom to be present to raise our family.”

is we get to see each other all the time and there is no guessing as to why he is in a good or bad mood.

Cannonball Café provides their customers with excellent bistro style cuisine for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

RICHARD: She is my best friend. I’m not going to lie, it is not easy to work with your spouse, but having her home every night is a blessing for our family.

What have you learned from your spouse or about your spouse by working together? SELENA: I have a newfound respect for my husband. His ability to handle multiple transactions at a time, while staying organized and juggling the stress of logistics in a calm manner has enabled What’s the best thing about ROL Transport to become working together? successful and ultimately has SELENA: We have a much given us this opportunity. He more balanced life. The best is a master at negotiation and part about working together does not react to situations.

The Café prides itself in delivering delicious meals to its patrons in an inviting and relaxing atmosphere with genuinely friendly service.

Cannonball is your home away from home. Instead, I find him processing all the information before he moves forward. RICHARD: My wife has a way with people. She communicates in a clear, direct and concise manner that makes things easy for people to understand. She also brings a different perspective to the business. I find myself saying, “I never thought about it like that” all the time.

PETER AND YENILE PINTO Married: 4 years Working Together: 2 years

As the owners of Deering Dental, the Pintos have worked as a team from Day 1, with Peter overseeing the day-to-day operations of the office while Yenile focuses on patient care; a partnership that both say is key to their success. “On my days off [from my previous job] I would oversee the office build-out, deal with contractors and do anything I could to get the office finished. At night Yeni and I would pop a bottle of wine and work into the night on our business plan and make decisions about layout, equipment, etc…” says Peter of getting the business off the ground. “The agreement from day one has been that if either of us feels like this is putting a strain on our marriage that I will resign as manager, but so far things couldn’t be better.”

Peter’s really worked to make sure I can concentrate on patients and I think they have noticed the difference. What have you learned from your spouse or about your spouse by working together? PETER: I learned that my easygoing wife is as hardheaded as I am. But honestly, my wife is incredibly organized and has helped me set up many systems to keep track of everything in the office, which has made my job much easier.

What’s the best thing about working together? PETER: It’s been really cool to open a business and watch it turn into something better than either of us could have done on our own. I find that Yeni and I do a pretty good job of filling in each other’s’ gaps and that’s been central to the success of our practice. YENILE: I’ve always been on the quiet side and Peter has YENILE: I honestly couldn’t definitely helped me improve imagine doing this without my communication skills and Peter. I was afraid that having gotten me to come out of my my own practice would mean shell more. He’s also helped me that I would have to split my be more assertive, which has time between patient care proven invaluable in running and administrative work, but my own business.

New Faces Take a Traditional Approach to Dentistry

BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

F

OR DENTISTS KARI MOSS VINUELA AND HUSBAND Larry their professional—and personal—life has come full circle. After meeting in Charlotte, where Larry was a resident and dental student Kari was looking into residency programs, the two kept in touch via Facebook and social media (“A true modern relationship,” says Kari with a laugh.) before their friendship took a romantic turn. Dating long-distance soon turned into a long-distance engagement before Kari took the leap to move to South Florida permanently. Today, however, the two spend little time apart, having joined forces to partner in Floridian Dental Group. “We can actually have an entire day go by and never see each other,” says Kari of their newfound togetherness. “But it’s been great. Now we can really bounce things off of each other, we can both see a patient rather than just talking about it when we get home.” The partners’ road from dentists to business owners has been a long time coming. After working in other practices in South Florida, the Vinuelas decided they wanted to establish their own legacy, bringing together the best of what they had each learned from previous mentors. “We originally found one practice that we were interested in but it ended up not working out,” says Kari, who admits the initial disappointment turned into a blessing in disguise. “It was through that doctor that we met Dr. [Gary] Lubel.” Calling their eventual collaboration with Lubel “meant to be,” Kari says the practice was a natural fit for what the Vinuelas had hoped to create on their own. “One thing that Larry and I told each other was above all else we want to continue that feeling of trust and loyalty that Dr. Lubel fostered for so many years. You

don’t see that anymore.” For the Vinuelas that means a dedication to decreasing patient wait times to no more than a few minutes (“an appointment is an appointment,” she says.), a focus on personalized care and a belief in transparency between doctor and patient. “Dentistry is a mysterious things to many people- they have to put their trust in us. We’re the expert and we have to earn their trust,” says Kari. “I tell people ‘If we don’t get to the point of trust it’s not worth it. You have to trust me.’” To that end they populate their office and website with educational information that can help patients feel comfortable and better understand their own dental health. “People crave information,” says Kari. “I never mind when people bring me questions or information that they’ve come across. It’s an opportunity to have a conversation.” The Vinuela’s focus on patient care and relationships extends to their staff—most of whom have worked in the office for many years. They also foster their family environment (the couple’s two-year-old can often be seen stopping by for a visit) by working with entire families of patients. “We’re a true family practice, like the old days,” says Kari. “We see people’s families- even kids [six and older]. Their parents or grandparents see us and they feel comfortable bringing the rest of their family.” Looking ahead the couple hope to continue to grow the practice with new –and old—patients coming back year after year. “I think that there’s a really great, unassuming, nice vibe to the office,” says Kari. “It’s calm, it’s warm, it’s an enjoyable experience. I like to think it’s how doctors used to be.” Floridian Dental Group office is located at 9595 N Kendall Dr., Suite 203, Miami, FL 33176. A New Cure For A Common Problem BY TFV STAFF

WHAT DOES THE PROCEDURE ENTAIL?

A

FFECTING ANYWHERE BETWEEN 20 TO 45 PERCENT of middle-aged and elderly women (according to the North American Menopause Society), vaginal atrophy may be the least talked about, yet most common, problem for women of a certain age. Now there is a solution! The Mona Lisa Touch is an FDA-approved medical laser available for use in the U.S., replacing past treatment options such as hormone therapies, which are often laden with side effects or contraindications. So what is the Mona Lisa Touch and how does it work? Here’s what you need to know.

Patients will receive three treatments spaced about six weeks apart. Each procedure takes only a few minutes to perform. The procedure is done in-office (patients feel only a small vibration) and requires no anesthesia or painkiller, with patients able to resume sexual intercourse after about 48 hours. After the three treatments, some patients may return for annual maintenance.

HOW FAST WILL PATIENTS FEEL THE RESULTS? Many patients experience symptom relief after just one treatment and almost all feel a difference after the second.

WHAT IS VAGINAL ATROPHY AND WHAT CAUSES IT? Vaginal atrophy is a condition often coinciding with menopause in which the vaginal walls thin and dry out, creating issues with urinary functions, dryness and tightening as well as pain during sexual intercourse. Though often painful and frustrating for sufferers, few women ask for help –or know it exists.

IS IT SAFE? A multisite study was conducted by two leading Urogynecologists who are experts in the field of postmenopausal gynecologic health; and recent results from a trial on postmenopausal women and breast cancer survivors showed positive results and high patient satisfaction.

HOW DOES THE MONA LISA TOUCH WORK? The medical laser works similar to other laser treatments, counteracting the atrophy by stimulating collagen production inside the vagina rather than altering hormone levels; essentially rehydrating, reviving dead skin and improving the condition of the vaginal walls.

HOW CAN I GET MORE INFORMATION? For more information and to see if you are a candidate for the Mona Lisa Touch, contact Ana Bueno, R.N. at South Miami Women’s Health / Drs. Phillips, Miller, Roca and Venditto at 305.665.9644

Diamond Tips

NEW YEAR. NEW STORE.

BY JOHN O’ROURKE, OWNER, MONTICA JEWELRY

L

AST MONTH WE STARTED THIS SERIES ON HOW DIAMONDS are valued using Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat. This month I’ll explain how Clarity and Carat play important roles… especially since clarity isn’t often visible to the naked eye and carat is a weight measurement and not a percentage of purity as in gold. Having this information will help you get the best diamond for your money and may prevent someone from taking advantage of you.

W

elcome to our latest boutique in Coral Gables!

We’ve designed it especially for you. Stop by for a visit, enjoy an aromatic espresso or perhaps a sparkling glass of champagne and discover a new and relaxing way to shop. Our showroom is filled with an amazing array of diamonds and diamond jewelry

Carat is the weight or the distribution of that weight and, as a result, diamonds of the same shape and carat weight will not necessarily appear to be the same size. For example, a precisely cut, one carat, round shaped diamond will have a diameter of 6.50 millimeters. In comparison, another one carat may appear smaller measuring 6.25 mm and another larger at 6.65 mm. In either case, these diamonds will not perform as well as the precisely cut 6.50 mm; light (think sparkle) will be lost through the bottom and sides of the diamond. Beautiful people come in all different shapes and sizes and the same is true of diamonds. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and there is nothing wrong with choosing a diamond whose weight distribution is not ideal. You just want to make sure that the price you’re paying fairly reflects the quality of diamond you’re buying. For more diamond information, check out my videos on YouTube… simply search “Montica Jewelry”. John and his wife Marichi own Montica Jewelry. They moved to a new showroom in January at 500 South Dixie Highway, Suite 203, Coral Gables, FL 33146. See more at Montica.com.

Hearts on Fire and Tacori. Have fun while you model the exquisite fine jewelry of prominent designers such as Doves and Dilamani, beautiful timepieces by Michele and so much more. We’re conveniently located on South Dixie Highway with visitor parking easily available.

A diamond’s clarity is graded on a scale of Flawless (FL/rarest) to Included to the 3rd degree (I3/common). Most inclusions are so small they cannot be seen by the unaided eye and would cause the diamond to fall within the range of FL to SI1. If you possess 20/20 vision and can easily see the marking(s) within a diamond, the clarity grade is most certainly an SI2 or lower. That being said, we never share a diamond’s quality grading with the client until after they’ve taken the time to visually experience the diamond. This ensures that they consider a variety of quality ranges and are better able to decide which characteristics are more or less important to them. I’ve seen a lot of magnificent SI2 diamonds out there and would never want a guest to pass on experiencing one just because of its clarity grading. Consider this: It may be possible to find a diamond whose inclusion can be hidden below a ring’s prong or within the setting. This can be a great option for someone shopping on a tight budget or searching for a bargain. If you are able to mask the inclusion behind part of the mounting, investing in a diamond like this may be a great buying opportunity to take advantage of.

The Touch and Sound of Vinyl BY PENNY DANIELS

M

USIC, TALKING AND LAUGHTER FILLED THE AIR. ALTHOUGH THE HOLIdays are behind you, the memories that were shared during this time with family and friends may still be in the back of your mind. You may have even played an old-time holiday song on your record player. You probably selected the right song on the vinyl album for the right moment. And the sound … it doesn’t compare to digital, does it? Do you remember the first record album you ever owned? Hmmm … was it the Beatles, Beach Boys, Bob Seger, Elvis Presley? Are you still listening to your vinyl records? Or are they gathering dust, filling milk crates in the garage, or on a bookshelf in the living room? Do you wonder if they even make these collectibles anymore in a world that is mainly digital in nature?

In the mid-60s to the late 70s, vinyl records turned music into America’s most favorite entertainment industry. Today, a record album is a click on a computer mouse. Music downloads become a taste test for the listeners as they browse music online and then purchase a few sample songs. Then, if they like what they hear, they may buy the series of songs either on a CD or a vinyl album. According to Nielsen Music, LP sales were up 51.8% in 2015, compared to the previous year, to almost 12 million (up from 9.2 million in 2014). This marks the 10th straight year of vinyl sales growth. With digital music, the value is really in its convenience and the immediacy of its delivery, and the fact you can play it while doing something else. There’s a quiet ceremony to playing a record. It requires more dedicated listening and planning. It’s the audio quality, the visual quality, and the physical touch of the artistic, one-ofa-kind cover and vinyl album. For those of us that grew up when the vinyl record album was at its peak, it also brings back many fond memories and oftentimes a smile. Whether you are interested in learning the value of your old record albums, trading them in, or adding to your collection, let the professionals at Musicians Discount Center in South Florida help. De-Stress in Delray BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ

What our patients are saying! The office is beautiful and welcoming. The technology is very up to date. The hygienist was extremely patient and kind with my 6-year-old, whom until today, had not allowed anyone to clean his teeth. The Dentist was engaged, very informative and friendly. I would highly recommend the office to my friends and family. - Matt Great dental experience. I had been a little lax about my care needs, but that has just changed after my first visit. The entire dental team were awesome, and I’ve already scheduled my next visit. Thanks everybody. - Mark

They take their time to get the work on you done right. I live far from this place, but it’s worth the drive. - Peter Everyone from the moment I entered, to the moment I left, was amazing. Dr. Pinto and Dental Hygienist Yade, created the best dental experience I’ve ever had. The office is beyond clean and the technology used is amazing. I look forward to my next visit and having Dr. Pinto as my dentist. I will definitely recommend her to everyone of my friend and family in the area. - Karina

HAT’S IT, I’M OUT OF HERE.” EVER HAVE ONE OF THOSE DAYS WHERE THE walls are closing in on you or the kids have driven you crazy for the past month? Well, that day had arrived for me and I threw some clothes into a bag, jumped in my Jeep and headed out of town. As I pulled into Delray Sands I knew I had picked the perfect place for a quick mental and physical reset. A few minutes drive from the heart of Delray, the hotel was a welcome respite from the sounds of cars and people; quiet and secluded yet so close to town. So, it was on this hot day that I ensconced myself on the patio of the Latitudes restaurant, rumrunner in hand, and felt the ocean breeze caress my neck. I wanted to go into town but decided that could wait until happy hour, so I grabbed a book and made my way to the beach where my chaise and umbrella waited just for me. Nestled on my chaise, I looked out at the azure blue water dotted with the tanned bodies of beach goers and let the sound of the waves lull me into sleep. It’s 5:00 somewhere, well; actually it was 5:00 when I headed into town to check out the happy hours. I have to admit I made the rounds to Boston’s, Blue Anchor, Atlantic Grill and Caffe Luna Rosa. From there it was all downhill as I stopped off at Sloane’s with it’s multi colored chandeliers, funky walls and novelties for a double scoop of ice cream. Note to self: walk the beach tomorrow. Back at the hotel, I changed into my bathing suit and slipped into the Jacuzzi, letting the water from the rock waterfall cascade over me. The stars came out and there I sat, with only the sound of the water breaking the night’s silence, feeling the most relaxed I had felt in a long time. I allowed myself to sleep in and had my coffee on the balcony that overlooked the beach. Today I was going to explore the galleries and boutiques that lined Atlantic Avenue. Thought of stopping again at Sloane’s, but my voice of reason got the better of me and I kept walking. By now I was getting hungry and I knew exactly what I wanted for lunch. I had seen it on the Latitudes menu the day before: a lobster salad with green beans, goat cheese, avocado and caramelized onions. Another afternoon on the beach, a quick nap by the pool and I was ready to dance the night away at Johnnie Brown’s. The awesome thing about this place is that a single person can go there and always find a dance partner. The live band was great and by midnight my feet needed a massage. Back under the stars at the hotel, I took my shoes off and let my feet soak in the Jacuzzi and then limped over to the outdoor fire pit, sunk into the cushioned sofa and had a glass of wine. As the sun rose, so did I and took a nice long walk on the beach so I could gear up for their Sunday brunch, voted one of the best in Palm Beach County. Not surprisingly, my only disappointment was that I couldn’t eat more. Note to self: bring a one-piece bathing suit next time. Not being able to put off the inevitable any longer, I had to accept reality and head home but as I pulled into my driveway I felt rejuvenated and ready for the weeks ahead. Bring it on! What is Hospice?

H

OSPICE IS A COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAM OF MEDICAL CARE AND SUPPORT for people nearing the end of life. The Hospice philosophy is based on several ideas: »» No one should die alone or in pain. »» Life-limiting illnesses can cause emotional and spiritual distress as well as physical pain, all of which deserve quality professional attention and compassionate care. »» A serious illness affects the entire family, not just the person who is ill. Those affected need and deserve ongoing support before and after a loved one’s death. Hospice provides pain management and appropriate palliative care, care that focuses on the patient’s comfort, when curative medical treatments no longer enhance quality of life. Hospice strives to meet the patient’s physical, emotional and spiritual needs and provides support for the entire family during the illness and for at least one year after a patient’s death. Most Hospice Care is provided at home, where people most want to be when they are ill. Hospice Care can also be provided in a nursing or residential facility and in certain circumstances, in a hospital or hospice management residence. Hospice Dr Ismael Roque-Velasco President and Chief Executive Officer also provides medications, medical Hospice Care of South Florida equipment and supplies necessary to promote comfort at home or in other Hospice settings. Hospice does not mean giving up hope. The focus shifts toward helping the patient achieve the maximum quality of life by focusing on their physical, emotional and spiritual needs.

Hospice Care vs. Standard Medical Care Some differences between Hospice Care and Medical care are: »» Hospice looks at all of the patient’s and their family’s needs. A coordinated team of hospice professionals, assisted by volunteers, work to meet the patient’s and family’s emotional and spiritual needs, as well as the patient’s physical needs. »» An emphasis is put on controlling pain and symptoms through the most advanced techniques available as well as on emotional and spiritual support tailored to the needs of the patient and their family. »» Hospice recognizes that a serious illness affects not only affects the person who is ill, but the entire family as well. The family and patient is the “unit of care” for hospice professionals. At times, other family members may actually need more attention than the patient.

Who pays for Hospice care? Hospice palliative care is covered 100% by most insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid, with no out-of-pocket costs to the patient or family. Costs covered related to the terminal illness, including the services of the Hospice team, medications, medical equipment and supplies. Contact Hospice Care of South florida to learn more on how they can you and your loved ones in your time of need.

IT ’S T HEIR B U S INES S

Oh Baby: Nini and Loli Takes the Guesswork out of Shopping BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

E

VERY NEW PARENT HAS BEEN THERE. STANDING AMID ROWS OF GEAR AND apparel, drowning in strollers, cribs and high chairs, they have a moment of realization that they may just be in over their head. It’s this overwhelming experience that Nini and Loli seeks to eliminate, likening themselves to a “one-stop shop” where the first time parent can find everything that they need, eliminating the necessity to store hop and become overwhelmed with too many options. Bright, colorful and welcoming, the store (named after the owner’s children) makes a point to cater to not only new parents but also anyone in the market for children’s items. Coveted Bugaboo strollers and accessories sit comfortably next to plush animal heads, diaper bags and educational toys while those looking ahead will find will find 3-in-1 scooters, sleek humidifiers and the latest Yoyo stroller (folding so flat it can be stored in an airplane’s overhead compartment). As owners pre-select what they think are the best in a specific category, shoppers are treated to three of the best in varying price ranges rather than ten of the same thing. Helping shoppers navigate the curated offerings are Nini and Loli’s trained staff who are on hand to give first hand advice on products and help newer parents figure out exactly what they might need from nursery furniture to layette options. Nini and Loli’s owners say they are careful to make sure the store not only offers shoppers the best in every price range, but also that offerings are there when needed. With in-demand brands such as Bugaboo (the store is one of only a few in Miami to carry the brand) the store is diligent about keeping the latest colors and styles in stock…resulting in no wait for parents who are on a deadline. That dedication to customer service has helped the owners grow their business from a small storefront in Aventura to two shops totaling more than 9,000 square feet, their latest taking up 5,000-sqaure-feet in donwntown Coral Gables. In fact, the shop is now eyeing options outside the U.S. to better serve their growing

international clientele, boasting customers from Brazil, France, Mexico and more And, after 15 years in South Florida, the owners aren’t ruling out a third location in the area (South Miami and Weston are options, they say). But for now they’re happy to focus on their growing fan base and continue to bring the latest in baby gear to shoppers, crediting their success to “…hard work and being consistent… and offering great customer service.” Nini and Loli is a destination for modern expecting parents who want the best of everything a baby needs. With a large selection of baby gear, strollers, furniture, diaperbags, toys apparel, and all the baby registry basics. Nini and Loli has two locations in South Florida–Aventura: 20335 Biscayne Boulevard. L

OVE AND FRIENDSHIP SHOULD BE CELEBRATED YEAR round, but the month of February has been especially chosen to encapsulate, deliver and share feelings of affection and amity since the year 1400 A.D. To this end, I recently polled a few Floridians about their perfect place for a romantic getaway. So, if you desire to spend some time away with your baes this year, I invite you to consider the following hand-picked, Florida retreats:

The Standard Spa - South Beach Perhaps one of the best kept secrets in South Beach, this beautiful and serene oasis is at once accessible and secluded. Located on Belle Isle, it boasts tropical gardens, private terraces and an outdoor deck with breathtaking sunset views, all within a stone’s throw of Lincoln Road, Purdy Lounge, and the hottest Miami nightlife. Its world-class indoor and outdoor hydrotherapy experiences are complimentary to guests and include a Roman waterfall hot tub, Arctic plunge, and infinity pool. Restorative yoga sessions, mud bath tubs, and a full bar and grill make this unique and ultra chic mini paradise a place that you’ll frequent beyond your first romantic interlude. Under $300 a night, it is one of my favorite “two-day trips” in Miami. Details at standardhotels.com

If you like SoBe, then this getaway will resonate with your chic-vibe senses. It is located at the end of the worldfamous and busy Duval Street, but it is insulated enough that you will not notice it. This place is made to help you relax your senses, rejuvenate your inner self, and connect with your external space in a healthy and healing way, like Key West is known for. They boast “island luxury with barefoot elegance” in a way that is as opulent as it is natural. Some of the most sought-out suites are found in this world-class resort, from which all the waterborne amenities, like catamaran sailing, snorkeling, and jet skiing are readily accessible for you to enjoy with the object of your adoration. Key West in general has always been in my favorite top three places in Florida, and Ocean Key is among the best that can be enjoyed here. Visit oceankey.com

Watercolor Inn and Resort - Santa Rosa Beach, FL Nestled between Fort Walton Beach and Panama City, this getaway is one of the most desirable vacation destinations in the State. It is no wonder that it is the only AAA Four Diamond Rated Hotel on Northwest Florida’s Gulf Coast. The main inn boasts 60 rooms that face beaches of sugar sand and crystal blue waters. To move around the area, do as the Romans and use loaner bikes. At turndown, you and your better half will enjoy freshly baked cookies. Whether you fancy kayaking and canoeing in the morning or awe-inspiring beach walks at dusk, this top-end retreat will seamlessly combine modern amenities with the “nostalgia of an unassuming beach town from days gone by.” More at watercolorresort.com February evokes feelings that we should demonstrate year-round, but it allocates an opportunity, a specific time span so-to-speak, for planning a special experience with our loved one (or significant other). Fortunately, as Florida experts declare, we need not leave our State to transport ourselves to a retreat worthy of the apple of our eye. After all, folks worldwide come here to get away. So, fellow Villagers, enjoy the best Florida has to offer, and have a happy month of love and friendship! Luis E. Ortega is a hopeless romantic, world-travelled poet, and love philosopher. Love the Home You’re With BY FRANK DEVALDIVIELSO

W

INTER IS A GREAT SEASON TO FIND THE TIME AND inspiration to take full advantage of the cool temperature and complete that project that is lingering, or, start a new one that you can accomplish on your own. Put more sweat equity into the home you love. The love is reciprocal in personal enjoyment and financial reward. The do-it-yourself projects can include painting the wood trim throughout the house, de-cluttering the “stuff” we accumulate and donating to someone in need, deep-cleaning of the bathrooms, use a caulking gun and fill in the cracks that need it, pressure cleaning the driveway and sidewalk, repaint the kitchen cabinets. For those of us that are newbies at this head to YouTube and learn how to do this from others. Love is in the details. A vintage bathroom can be attractive when the small square tile is spotless, the formica shines, the paint is fresh and there are no empty cracks in the shower stall, counter top or around the toilet. You can get another five years out of that bathroom, Ca-Ching! Speaking of money... GoldPrice. org, CNBC and Corelogic reported that in 2015 real estate values outperformed Silver, Gold, Dow Jones, SP 500 and NASDAQ with a national average of 6.8 percent return on investment. Let’s also address the white elephant in the room… mortgage rates are increasing! The rates are projected to go up to 4.7 percent by the fourth quarter of 2016. That will have an effect undoubtedly, especially for the first time buyers. Zillow reported that 70 percent of first time home buyers will continue with their home buying plans and about half of those will reconsider a smaller home or less expensive community. In Miami-Dade, inventory has leveled off at four-to-five months, where if no other home comes on the market it will take that long to sell off all of the homes that are on the market now. We’re heading towards a normal market where an average of six months is a balanced market. Buyers are buying every day. Most of us live in a home that was built more than fifty years ago and the grand dame has held strong in extreme climate conditions. Older homes tend to have amazing foliage and beautiful trees that surround them, are in well established and safe neighborhoods and have access to the best schools there are. In short, your home is very desirable to the next family that will enjoy it. We can be good stewards of the home and preserve it for the next family by taking on small projects and completing them with pride. It will also pay you back when it’s time to pass it on to the new family in our community. So, what does your honey-do list look like? Enjoy the projects knowing that your home will pay you back in personal enjoyment and in appreciating values! T’S ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE NOT TO HEAR ABOUT STEM CELL therapy in newspapers, magazines, radio and TV. Stem cell therapy has been studied by researchers across the world, and is available for humans in many countries… but stem cell therapy for animals? Stem cell therapy falls under the discipline of Regenerative Medicine, where cells, growth factors and other natural agents are used to repair damaged tissues. It represents a breakthrough in medicine, where we no longer focus on treating the secondary effects of the degenerating tissue or organ, but instead will facilitate their regeneration. In Veterinary Medicine Stem cell therapy has been FDA approved for many years for dogs, cats and horses. It is approved so far for the management of arthritis and for injured ligaments/tendons. Once injected in the pet, the cells have the ability to turn into cartilage, ligament and bone tissue. They also will facilitate repair and regeneration of the injured site and decrease inflammation. In animals with orthopedic disease these benefits translate into decreased pain and inflammation (decreasing the need for medications) and enhanced repair of cartilage, ligament and bone injuries. So far thousands of dogs have been treated and benefited with this breakthrough therapy. Here’s how it works: A small amount of the pet’s own adipose (fatty) tissue is surgically removed to harvest the stem cells, thus eliminating potential for cell rejection and the use of embryos. The adipose tissue is sent overnight to a specialized processing veterinary laboratory, where the processing is performed under strict quality standards. The stem cells are evaluated and counted, and a specific amount of cells is placed in each dosing syringe. The dosing syringes are then sent overnight to a veterinary clinician with experience on stem cell therapy who will administer the cells guided by ultrasound directly into the affected joints. Excess cells are banked in frozen nitrogen at the processing laboratory for future use in the pet. There are companies offering equipment to process the adipose tissue at your veterinarian’s clinic. Disadvantages of this option is the lack of strict quality standards, lack of highly trained professional handling the stem cells, and the inability to evaluate the stem cells and to store the excess cells for future use. Stem cell therapy should be integrated with a comprehensive rehabilitation program by a certified veterinary rehab practitioner in order to maximize the potential of successfully managing arthritis and soft tissue injury on the pet. Like any novel therapy in high demand, it is important to find a veterinary clinician with formal training and experience in the procedure in order to obtain the best results. Stem cell therapy represents one of the few cases where -for the time being- animals have a better cutting-edge therapy available to them than any allowed to their owners. It is a real breakthrough, were the focus is not on treating the symptoms of the disease, but minimizing its progression. It provides a safer and better alternative than conventional treatments.

The Star-Crossed Love Story of Chocolate and Valentine’s Day BY NORMAN LOVE

T

O MOST PEOPLE, CHOCOLATE IS A WONdrous substance to be eaten. To me, chocolate is art. Gleaming truffles awash in vivid color are far greater than mere treats; they are a decadent proclamation of love for your someone special. We may agree to disagree, but there is no arguing that chocolate takes center stage each Valentine’s Day. The sweet fixation dates back to Roman times, when sugar was a precious commodity for exchange. As Valentine’s Day spread to the English-speaking world in the 1840s, Richard Cadbury began selling a new variety of edible chocolate in beautifully decorated boxes he designed himself. From that point, it was a quick jump to taking the familiar images of Cupids and roses and putting them on heart-shaped boxes. While Richard Cadbury didn’t actually patent the heart-shaped box, it’s widely believed that he was the first to produce one. Today, consumers spend nearly $2 billion on candy each Valentine’s Day. The connection of chocolates and Valentine’s Day is much like the sentiment of everlasting love, and unwavering devotion that never disappoints. Chocolates, whether savored or admired, are miniature works of art containing romantic blends of pure, intense flavors that will captivate your taste buds. This February 14, Norman Love Confections will bring back its best-selling taste and textures that have aroused the senses from years past. Inspired by the tale of a blossoming romance, the appropriately named First Love collection is available from

January 25 to February 14. Enjoy with your first love, or new love, this Valentine’s Day. Norman Love is a world-renowned pastry chef and award-winning chocolatier who has been recognized several times for producing the best ultra-premium chocolates in the nation. Norman Love Confections’ “Black Collection” has been included in Forbes on its list of the nation’s top 10 truffles. Norman has been named one of USA Today’s top 10 entrepreneurs for 2014 and the Huffington Post included his chocolate salon as one of the top six US destinations in its Chocolate Lover’s Travel Guide. In addition, Norman Love Confections’ chocolates and desserts are offered on 18 Princess Cruises’ ships through the “Chocolate Journeys” partnership. Give Your Dog the Best Dog Treats in 2016! BY TAMI MAIER

LOVING PET CARE IN YOUR HOME OR MINE

O

UR DOG CASPER’S BREAST CANCER DIAGNOSIS THREE YEARS AGO MOTIvated me to evaluate her nutritional intake in 2012, and to consequently steer clear of highly processed dog food and treats. Why exactly? Because the latter contain a plethora of artificial, harmful, and completely unnecessary preservatives and ingredients, whereas single ingredient treats are made of only one ingredient, and one ingredient only. There are single ingredient, freeze-dried treats (98 percent of water is removed), as well as single-ingredient, dehydrated (75 percent of the water is removed) dog treats. Here are a couple things to know about these healthy treats… »» They are great for allergic dogs. Should your dog have a known allergy to a certain kind of protein, single ingredient treats will provide peace of mind for you as you’ll know exactly which kind of protein they are made of. You won’t have to worry about your dog having an allergic reaction to one of the ingredients because the treat only consist of ONE ingredient. Many companies sell a variety of single-ingredient treats, meaning you’re able to choose between different proteins, such as beef, chicken, fish, lamb, etc. »» There are no superfluous add-ons. If you have ever taken a closer look at the ingredient list of standard dog treats you will find at major pet retailers, you will have noticed the addition of artificial colors, animal byproducts, salt and sugar and cheap fillers such as corn and wheat. The beauty of single-ingredient dog treats is that they do not contain any of the above mentioned garbage (quite literally, that’s what by-products are: the leftovers from slaughtered mammals, such as beaks, hooves, undeveloped eggs, skin, etc…). »» No harmful preservatives are needed. Single-ingredient, freeze-dried and dehydrated dog treats never contain any harmful preservatives such as BHA, BHT, Ethoxyquin, TBHQ, Propyl Gallate or Propylene Glycol. Here is why they do not need them: When treats are freeze-dried/dehydrated, moisture is removed, eliminating the need to add preservatives and resulting in a shelf stable treat. If your dog treats contain any of the above mentioned artificial preservatives, I strongly suggest tossing them in the trash now, as they are known to cause serious health problems if eaten on a regular basis. »» The full nutritional value is maintained. Cooking is not necessary when freeze-drying/dehydrating dog treats, which means that no nutrients are loston the contrary, the full nutritional value is maintained. While I do not believe that limited ingredient treats are bad, and I do occasionally give them to my dogs, I prefer single ingredient ones and will definitely no longer offer my dogs any treats with a long ingredient list, particularly with anything that is hard to pronounce ( and likely of artificial nature). We at Lux Paws have one desire and that is to keep your pet healthy, we offer a full line of all natural single ingredient treats at www.lux-paws.com please check us out, and look out for our new line of single ingredient treats coming for 2016. Dating in the Real World BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ, DIVORCE COACH

HAD A CLIENT THE OTHER DAY THAT WAS DEALING WITH some dating issues and as I sat there brainstorming with her, I had déjà vu. I had heard this story several times before and I want to share with you the results of our session. Let’s face it, people, dating in your forties, fifties and sixties is no easy task but I firmly believe we make it more difficult than it has to be. I hear women all the time tell me it’s a battlefield out there and I in turn say what Joyce Meyer says, “The battlefield is

in your mind.” This particular client had gone on two dates with someone she was attracted to, along with feeling that they had everything in common. She did feel however that he was not into her. On the third date, the venue lent itself to her getting dressed up and according to her, this posed a dilemma for her date. His story is that he felt on the first date she was not into him, so therefore he started viewing her as a friend. However, seeing her dressed up knocked his socks off and now he doesn’t know which direction to take this in. He proceeds to give her “mixed messages” by holding her hand and kissing her. At this point, she is frustrated and disappointed because quite honestly, she has already built a story in her mind as to what she wants it to be. At the end, she is trying desperately to understand his reasoning and figure it out.

There are several things at play here. Let’s look at each one. 1. 2.

Assumptions are dangerous. Just because you felt a connection and/or had a good time doesn’t mean the other person sees or feels the same way. NO stories, deal with the here and now and save the daydreaming for further along in the relationship. This is where women create the most angst for themselves. Listen to what he is saying and not try to make it what you want to hear. If he is telling you he doesn’t know what he wants, take that at face value and don’t put your life on hold while he is trying to decide. As hurtful as it may be, he might not feel the same way and doesn’t know how to tell you. Keep moving. Bottom line is a guy will go after what he wants. Don’t try to convince him or sway his decision. You want someone who will jump over the fence to be with you, not sit on it. You need to be on the same page. Perspective is paramount. As disappointed as you may be, this is someone you just met and there are other people out there whom you will feel connected to and who will be a good fit. Acceptance is key. When you get hooked into trying to figure it out and understand it in order to let it go, you are going down a deep, deep well. Accept that you might not ever understand and that the reasons don’t really matter; the end result is the same, he doesn’t want what you want. Don’t jump to conclusions. Let things unfold naturally and don’t force things. You might be doing yourself and the relationship an injustice. Last but not least, don’t put your heart in the path of hurt. If he only wants to be friends and you still have feelings for him, save the palling around when you have been able to hit the reset button on your feelings.

Remember, your thoughts are what bring on your feelings. Control your thoughts and the dating world will be easier to navigate. Cool Metal Roofing for a Hot City BY FRANK ISTUETA, OWNER, ISTUETA ROOFING

H

ERE IN OUR HOT MIAMI CLIMATE, ROOFING contractors and homeowners are changing the way they select roofing materials based on their energy efficiency. Did you know that a roof can wield the greatest impact on the energy performance of a home? Cool metal roofs – which have been designed to reflect more sunlight and absorb less heat than a standard roof - can help reduce energy consumption by lowering cooling loads. Lightly colored, more reflective roofs can save up to 40 percent in cooling energy. Just as wearing light-colored clothing can help keep you cool on a sunny day, cool roofs use solar-reflective surfaces to maintain lower roof temperatures. Cool metal roofs are ideal for Florida’s hot and humid climate, as they are most effective in areas where temperatures and air conditioning use are high. By reducing heat gain through the roof surface, cool roofs decrease air conditioning use that leads to 10-30 percent in energy savings at the hottest part of the day, when energy demand is at its peak. By 2030, our nation’s electricity demands will be 45 percent greater than today according to the Nuclear Energy Institute. And according to recent studies, if

cool roofs were installed nationwide, we would save an astonishing $1 billion in cooling costs, with $20 million in the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area alone. Coatings and finishes available today certify metal as a recognized cool roof product. In addition to being energy efficient, metal roofing is recognized as a sustainable building material for several other environmental reasons. Being a “green” building product makes it a popular choice for Miami homeowners. Cool metal roofing is available unpainted, with oven-baked paint finishes, or with granular-coated surfaces. This family of roofing can achieve solar reflectance of more than 70 percent. Reflected solar energy allows the roof surface to remain cooler, which means less heat is transferred into your home.

If You Avoid Maintenance Now...You’ll Pay Up Later! Whatever type of roof you have, it will deteriorate over time if you neglect to maintain it. Almost all of us regularly maintain and clean our vehicles in order to avoid costly problems and to keep them looking and running as best as possible for as long as possible; shouldn’t we do the same for the roofs over our heads?

Regular inspection leads to early detection of possible roof problems (that can become more costly later), protection of your valuable assets and maintenance of a safe environment for your family. Since your home represents a sizable investment (probably one of the largest you’ll make in life) - and because your roof plays such an important role in protecting you and your family - you need a professional roofing contractor who will inspect the roof and provide proof, such as photographs, of any problem areas. They should also provide a description of how the problem will be fixed, how long the repair/replacement will take and how much it will cost. A good contractor will also make recommendations to increase the lifespan of the roof. Bottom line: Proper roof maintenance – performed by an experienced professional – can save you from future heartaches, future expense and provide you with peace of mind that one of your most valuable assets remains in a healthy condition. Here's the bad news: By the time you realize you have a leak it's already too late. Moisture has already stripped years of life away from your roof and has robbed you of your hard-earned money, without you even knowing it.

ASK T HE PL AST I C SU R G EO N

Is Rapid Weight Loss Healthy? Without These Components, There’s a Slim Chance BY JOSE M. SOLER-BAILLO M.D., M.S, BOARD CERTIFIED PLASTIC SURGEON, SOUTH MIAMI, FL

S

or she not only rapidly loses weight in a safe, efficient manner, but also that the weight is kept off for good. Unfortunately, people who take a crack at fad diets or join the commercialized diet and exercise plans fail to recognize the necessity of two quintessential components of their journeys. The first is daily, attentive care provided by an expert medical physician. This type of care does not mean generic directions that have been prescribed for the general public. What I am emphasizing is one-on-one personalized care. The second key component is the follow-up care. Just as one who struggles with addiction fights temptations daily, so do weight loss patients. What matters most is that they are receiving encouragement to persevere even when they have reached their goals. In fact, just by simply adding these two components to one’s weight loss plan, it has been proven that a person can lose ten times more weight on average than those who have splurged on the leading commercialized diet and exercise plans. As you continue to work towards your weight loss goals in 2016, think ahead to the years to come. Where do you typically fall short? If you lose weight, feel great, and eventually revert to your old, bad habits, it could be that your plan is lacking these two key components to rapid, healthy weight loss. An International, multilingual Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Jose Soler-Baillo brings to South Florida a refreshing, modern approach to Cosmetic Surgery. Dr. Soler-Baillo earned his Medical Degree at the prestigious Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, trained in General Surgery at the Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey, and received extensive training in Plastic Surgery in Miami, New York, and Texas. Dr. Soler-Baillo is Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. For more information please visit, resultsmd.com or email info@soler-baillo.com.

PEED: WE ALL CRAVE IT. WHETHER IT IS THE MOST SOUPEDup car on the road, choosing expedited shipping, or sneaking into the express line at the grocery store with more than ten items, we want things done fast. Weight loss is no exception. We all want to become slimmer and healthier in 2016 but are faced daily with the ever-present conflict between speed and efficiency in this age of instant gratification. Take this as a simple example: You want to experience rapid weight loss, but you also do not have time to cook dinner after a long, busy day at work. The fast food drive thru calls your name on the drive home, you find yourself back at square one before you know it. So how exactly does one lose weight in a fast but also healthy and efficient manner without having to starve or spend hours at the gym? Unfortunately, you will not find the answer hidden in any of the most famous and “successful” weight loss programs available today. One deceiving solution that seems to be quite obvious for people who are overweight and are looking to slim down is to cut calories while hitting the gym hard daily. These “very-low calorie diets” (or “VLCD’s”) sometimes even come with medical supervision by a physician. Nearly thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours at the gym later, you may have had some success in cutting down about 15-25 percent of your body weight if a safe but inefficient manner. According to WebMD, however, “weight returns when the diet is stopped and happens rapidly; some experts say it’s best to take a more sustainable approach to weight loss comparable to that of regular diets.” So how do I define a “sustainable approach?” It all begins with close monitoring of a person’s progress on a real-time basis to ensure that he
