As South Florida’s growing culinary scene continues to evolve and place a heavier emphasis on sourcing local and organic ingredients, there is an increasing demand for both nutritious and affordable meal options. Grown, a first-of-its-kind fast food restaurant developed by Shannon and Ray Allen, opening March 2016 in South Miami, aims to fill that void in the market with “real food, cooked slow, for fast people.” With a focus on delicious, nutrient-dense fare, the innovative concept marries the quality of farm-to-fork cuisine with the convenience of fast food dining.

CITY AMENDS ORDINANCE TO PROMOTE PUBLIC PEACE IN RESIDENTIAL AREAS Last month, the Coral Gables City Commission approved text amendments to a City ordinance in order to promote public peace and order in residential areas. Under the “Parades and Public Assemblies” City Code Chapter 62, the new Section 62-202 provides that it is unlawful for any person(s) to picket, protest, or conduct any picketing or protesting activity within a buffer area of 50 feet from the property line of any dwelling unit that is located in a Coral Gables residential neighborhood. This City ordinance, which is consistent with the requirements of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution as established by the U.S. Supreme Court, was prompted by reported instances during the last several years in which the domestic tranquility of residential neighborhoods has been disturbed by organized picketing and protests directed against specific residents living in Coral Gables. The ordinance sets forth alternative means and locations for protests.

CGPD PARTNERS WITH WASTE MANAGEMENT FOR CRIME PREVENTION PROGRAM The Coral Gables Police Department is getting additional help from a local company in protecting our neighborhoods. Waste Watch is a crime prevention program done in partnership with Waste Management which trains company employees to serve as an extra set of eyes for law enforcement and public safety officials. In Florida, tips from trained Waste Management employees have saved an elderly lady from a burning car, helped a lost toddler return home and stopped a potential theft. The Waste Watch program trains Waste Management drivers on what to look for and how to respond if they spot any suspicious activity while conducting their routes through Coral Gables neighborhoods. Should anything occur while on their routes, drivers are instructed to pull over at the safest location and follow proper protocol in calling emergency officials or their supervisors in non-emergency situations. “This partnership allows CGPD to rely on the trained observation of Waste Management drivers who, by the nature of their work, are very familiar with our neighborhoods and can spot unusual activity right away. Their contribution to ensure the wellbeing of our residents is invaluable,” said Coral Gables Police Chief Ed Hudak, Jr.

Tour of Kitchens Celebrates Seven Years BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

O

N SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 2016, A MIX OF FOODIES, home-design enthusiasts, architecture admirers and fans of the City Beautiful gathered together for the Coral Gables Community Foundation’s Seventh Annual Tour of Kitchens. Nine of Coral Gables’ finest private home kitchens opened their doors to the public and offered mouthwatering food tastings, exclusive home and kitchen items for sale and table setting displays for dining room inspiration. In addition to the homes, Astor Companies featured a sneak peek into the Merrick Manor luxury condominium development with a stop at the Merrick Manor Sales Gallery, which included Mediterranean-inspired bites and a gift bag for each guest. Scavolini Store Miami was also a featured stop on the Tour. The shop transported guests straight to Tuscany with its impressive showroom and authentic Italian fare prepared by a talented chef from Spuntino Catering. Proceeds from the 7th Annual Tour of Kitchens benefitted the Coral Gables Community Foundation and its Culinary Arts Fund, which provides support and scholarships for the Culinary Arts Program at Coral Gables Senior High School. “The success of this year’s Tour of Kitchens enables us to continue our support of the Coral Gables Senior High School Culinary Arts program and the mission of the Coral Gables Community Foundation, now celebrating its 25th year,” said Venny Torre, CEO of Torre Construction & Development and Chair of the 2016 Tour of Kitchens. The Tour kicked off with the Opening Event at the Snaidero Kitchens + Design showroom, where a lavish breakfast, coffee and mimosas were served. From there, guests began their selfguided Tour. Each home on the Tour featured tasty bites from a popular eatery, including Whisk Gourmet, MesaMar Seafood & Table, Tarpon Bend Raw Bar & Grill, Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza, Bricktop’s and La Taberna Giralda. The beneficiaries of the Tour itself, the Culinary Arts Program students from Coral Gables Senior High School, also showed off their culinary skills at one of the homes by preparing a delicious and refreshing ceviche dish. The Tour finished with a Closing Event at Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery featuring Martini Prosecco provided by Bacardi. At the Closing Event, guests indulged in the wide array of sugary confections provided by The Salty Donut, Vixi Gelateria, Oh My Gosh!!! Brigadeiros, Almotti Cookies, Misha’s Cupcakes, Mash Potatoes and local Girl Scout Troop #941. Also featured at Ferguson were kitchen talks by noted kitchen designer Julia Johnston and a specially curated silent auction including home, kitchen and foodie-related items. “This signature event attracts nearly 500 guests and is a fabulous community gathering year after year,” said Mary Snow, Executive Director of the Coral Gables Community Foundation. The 2016 Tour of Kitchens was made possible by the support of the following generous sponsors: Top Chef Sponsors Astor Companies/ Merrick Manor, Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery and Scavolini Miami; Gourmand Sponsor Snaidero Kitchens + Design; Gourmet Sponsors Raymond James and EWM International Realty; Foodie Sponsor Valerie Quemada, Realtor; and In-Kind Sponsors: Doctors Hospital, Bacardi/Martini Prosecco, GEM Spring Water, Waste Management and The Palace. South Florida Luxury Guide served as the Media Partner for the event.

Selling Your Home?

Spring OF THINGS GET INTO THE

BY ROSIE CRUZ-SOTERO, REALTOR®

Although weather is still cooler than usual in South Florida, spring is a hot time to sell a home. Here are some tips on how you can improve the odds that your home will “blossom” among the myriad of new listings hitting the spring-time real estate market: GET A HEAD START ON CLUTTER Since you’ll eventually be moving, why not start packing now? Starting the packing process early will help get you mentally and physically ready to move. This means getting organized by sorting through storage closets, attics, and garages to determine items you may want to keep and others you’ll want to give away or sell. Getting rid of stacks of unpaid bills, unread newspapers, refrigerator notes, and other visible items is just as important. While everyone has clutter, it can certainly be a deterrent for buyers who want to envision themselves in your home. CLEAN-UP Cleaning your house inside and out will create an inviting feeling for potential buyers. They will be drawn to spotless windows, sparkling mirrors and floors, and the scent of crisp linens. Send your window coverings to the dry cleaners, thoroughly vacuum blinds or toss into a soapy bathtub, and steam-clean all area rugs and carpets. CURB APPEAL Before potential buyers step foot into your home, the first-impressionclock starts ticking. Start with your lawn: clean out dead leaves and debris, and consider a diagonally mowed lawn to make your yard appear larger. Don’t let overgrown foliage block the windows or entrance path. Give your front door a squeaky clean-over and repaint for a fresh look. Plant colorful flowers near the entrance, especially yellow ones, which stimulate buying urges, happiness, and contentment.

MINOR IMPROVEMENTS While you don’t necessarily want to invest in major improvements before you sell, you’d be surprised the results minor enhancements and repairs can yield. Considering the value kitchens and bathrooms add to a home, quick updates like painting or replacing dated hardware and fixtures, can add a significant impact. If your kitchen lacks a backsplash, this is the perfect time to add one for a touch of charm. Also, try replacing the caulk and grout in your bathroom, and resurface any bathtubs. Evaluate the spaces in your home that have the boldest color and tone them down to a neutral palette. This way, buyers can envision a blank canvas for their own décor. INTERVIEW REALTORS® Your choice of a listing agent will make a big difference in how quickly your home sells and how much of a profit you’ll generate. Interview several agents to evaluate which ones have a deep local knowledge of similar homes in your price range and area. A REALTOR® with a great marketing plan, local and global resources and professional tech tools is crucial in promoting your home. Be wary of REALTORS who tell you they can sell for the highest price; instead choose someone who can present you with a detailed market analysis. T

OWARDS THE END OF MY SOPHOMORE YEAR I MADE A DECISION THAT I knew would benefit me in the long run. I decided to try something new with my education and transferred to homeschooling. I enrolled in Florida Virtual School as a full time student. I started FLVS my junior year and chose this path to be able to focus on my studies and start preparing for college. Just like our teachers have been reminding us from the first day of our freshman year, you have to make your first three years of high school count, especially junior year. I thought homeschooling would be the perfect scholastic fit for me. I consulted with my parents and they supported the idea and my decision. Throughout the summer of sophomore year I was eager to start school. I wanted to know what homeschooling was all about. I was excited to take the classes I chose consisting of three AP classes, two honors, and one foreign language class, but as badly as I wanted to start school I made sure I enjoyed my summer. Junior year was tough. There were times when I wanted to withdraw from FLVS and go back to my old school. It was very challenging to get used to learning off of a computer and not having a teacher right in front of me. As much as I put effort into the lessons and took notes, I was still not capable of understanding the material being presented to me. So, I did extracurricular activities which took my mind off of things. I was part of the soccer team at my old high school, which meant a lot responsibility, long practices, and long nights completing homework. In addition, I volunteered for the Miami International Film Festival and at the Camillus House. It took me almost a full school year to get used to being a virtual school student and to learn how to balance my school schedule and my extracurricular activities. There was so much to learn about virtual school and I thought I would never be able to get the hang of it. With time and help from my teachers, by second semester I was a prodigy at surfing the web and getting my work done. I aced my final exams at the end of the year. After a successful first year of being homeschooled I told myself, why not try it out again senior year? So I did, but this year I knew it would be different. It meant I wouldn’t be able to do all of the fun senior activities with my friends, go on senior trips and I wouldn’t be able to graduate with them. The first day of senior year was a tough day. I was seeing pictures of my friends on social media wearing their senior crowns. I felt down for a couple of days, but my friends were always there for me. The most challenging part of senior year was having to balance academics, taking my SAT’s and applying to colleges at the same time. As demanding as it was I survived first semester and completed all of my 17 college applications. Now, I’ve decided to transfer to my old high school. Graduation is something I looked forward to since the first day of high school and not graduating with my friends was something I couldn’t see myself doing. Being homeschooled has taught me a wide variety of things. I was able to get to find myself, I now know that I am a person who can take a challenge at any time and I have matured greatly. People at my current high school ask me all types of questions like, “Do you regret having been homeschooled?” or “Did it feel weird not being surrounded by people every day?” and all I said I was no. My social life did not change one bit when I was homeschooled. My true friends stuck by my side and I got to see them and hangout with them every weekend. Was it weird not seeing people every day and not being in a normal class environment? Yes it was, but homeschool taught be so many things that I will never trade for in a regular school environment. I was able to travel with my parents during the school year and complete my schoolwork in many different cities and different environments. I was able to continue my modeling career and take to a higher level. Throughout my four years of high school I can say that the most memorable period of time for me has been the year and a half I was homeschooled. This is a journey that I will never forget. I recommend being homeschooled to anyone who feels like they want to take their education to a different level, and who feels like a school environment isn’t really the fit for them. Arianne Sanchez is currently a senior at Coral Gables Senior High School.

T HE PHIL ANT HR O PIST A person who seeks to promote the welfare of others, especially by the generous donation of money to good causes.

Planting the SEEDS of Education BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

NAME:

Tiffany Graver-Smith The SEED School of Miami BACKGROUND: Though Graver-Smith calls her upbringing “fortunate,” she also admits that she wasn’t immune to financial struggle. Through it all her mom still pushed her to attend college, making her the first in her family to do so (she got her Bachelor’s from the University of Miami). “My mom always said, ‘No matter what happens in life, no one can take away your education,’” she says. To that end Graver-Smith has dedicated her career to helping others fulfill that dream, currently as Donor Relations Manager and Assistant to the President at The SEED School Miami, South Florida’s first college-preparatory, public boarding school. Graver-Smith was no stranger to community work when the school “fell into her lap,” having worked with nonprofits such as Honey Shine prior to learning about SEED. After a chance meeting with a real estate agent who told her about the program, Graver-Smith returned home and immediately looked them up. “I was blown away by their mission and thought this was a game changer for Miami,” she says. “I knew I had to be involved. Within a week, I was brought on as a founding member of the team and the rest is history.” ABOUT THE SEED SCHOOL: SEED Miami provides a 24-hour college preparatory holistic approach to learning to some of the community’s most vulnerable children, recruiting students from underserved areas in South Florida. So far, more than 90 percent of all SEED graduates have enrolled in college and the Miami school (there are others in Washington DC and Baltimore) is now in its second year, with 96 students in grades six and seven. In addition to academics, the school provides everything from healthy meals and extracurricular outings (think Heat games and Broadway shows at the Arsht) to character development, college counseling and more. “We are essentially breaking the cycle of poverty by preparing our students academically and socially,” says Graver-Smith. REALIZING A DREAM: Graver-Smith says the school’s “Dream Ceremony,” in which incoming students share their dreams for the future is an incredibly special moment for her and the rest of the staff and families. “We learn our students’ dreams for the future, such as becoming a Judge, going to college, or traveling to China,” she says. “This gives us a unique opportunity to begin helping our students prepare for those dreams. One of the special components of my job is providing our students with a hands-on experience unique to their ‘dream.’”

FUTURE PLANS: In addition to recruiting rising sixth graders for next year’s academic year, Graver-Smith says fundraising is high priority when it comes to supporting the long-term sustainability of the school. “I encourage members of the community to contact me and tour our school to learn more about how our students’ time at SEED is changing their lives, because seeing is believing.”

‘‘

I am so grateful to those families who have put their trust in me and welcomed me into their lives to help their children. I’m blessed beyond words to have created long-lasting relationships with children around the community, whom I get to watch blossom into the incredible young adults they are today. ”

A New Cure For A Common Problem

A

FFECTING ANYWHERE BETWEEN 20 TO 45 PERCENT OF middle-aged and elderly women (according to the North American Menopause Society), vaginal atrophy may be the least talked about, yet most common, problem for women of a certain age. Now there is a solution! The Mona Lisa Touch is an FDA-approved medical laser available for use in the U.S., replacing past treatment options such as hormone therapies, which are often laden with side effects or contraindications. So what is the Mona Lisa Touch and how does it work? Here’s what you need to know. WHAT IS VAGINAL ATROPHY AND WHAT CAUSES IT? Vaginal atrophy is a condition often coinciding with menopause in which the vaginal walls thin and dry out, creating issues with urinary functions, dryness and tightening as well as pain during sexual intercourse. Though often painful and frustrating for sufferers, few women ask for help –or know it exists. HOW DOES THE MONA LISA TOUCH WORK? The medical laser works similar to other laser treatments, counteracting the atrophy by stimulating collagen production inside the vagina rather than altering hormone levels; essentially rehydrating, reviving dead skin and improving the condition of the vaginal walls.

WHAT DOES THE PROCEDURE ENTAIL? Patients will receive three treatments spaced about six weeks apart. Each procedure takes only a few minutes to perform. The procedure is done in-office (patients feel only a small vibration) and requires no anesthesia or painkiller, with patients able to resume sexual intercourse after about 48 hours. After the three treatments, some patients may return for annual maintenance. HOW FAST WILL PATIENTS FEEL THE RESULTS? Many patients experience symptom relief after just one treatment and almost all feel a difference after the second. IS IT SAFE? A multisite study was conducted by two leading Urogynecologists who are experts in the field of postmenopausal gynecologic health; and recent results from a trial on postmenopausal women and breast cancer survivors showed positive results and high patient satisfaction. HOW CAN I GET MORE INFORMATION? For more information and to see if you are a candidate for the Mona Lisa Touch, contact Ana Bueno, R.N. at South Miami Women’s Health / Drs. MAYOR OF CORAL GABLES

F YOU DRIVE BY SEGOVIA STREET, YOU WILL NOTICE THE construction signs around two of this street’s traffic circles. Two sculptures — which celebrate Coral Gables’ roots as a Garden City — will soon grace the Segovia Traffic Circles at Coral Way and Biltmore Way. They were designed by renowned New York artist Alice Aycock, who was chosen by the City Commission to create the first major public artworks since Coral Gables founder George Merrick’s day. Aycock is a nationally renowned public artist whose sculptures are on display at major museums and public spaces across the country, including a recent installation on Park Avenue. For Coral Gables, Aycock’s artworks include a large sculpture with fountain features at the intersection of Biltmore Way and a smaller sculpture at Coral Way. Aycock was chosen after a panel of arts experts reviewed 181 submissions from around the world. Next month, you will enjoy the completed displays of these magnificent sculptures. I hope you agree with me that they will add to the beauty of Coral Gables.

Vineland Students Set Out To Save Everglades BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

L

AST YEAR, NINE-YEAR-OLD CHRISTOPHER RAMOS LEARNED ABOUT THE Everglades in his Vineland K-8 fourth grade class. Being a nature and animal lover, the lesson raised concerns for Christopher about threats to the panthers, manatees and alligators and spurred him into action. He came home that day and told his dad that he was going to save the Everglades. Christopher set to work, initially setting a plan to place flyers around his neighborhood and organize a bake sale and eventually (on a suggestion from Dad Paul) settling on a charity bike ride to benefit a local Everglades-focused charity. Two months later, with the help of older brother Paul Michael and younger brother Ryan, he had raised $3,700.00 for the Everglades Foundation, an organization that helps teachers introduce students to key aspects of the Everglades ecosystem including its watershed, endangered species, water conservation and other topics.

SEE WHAT ALL THE BLOW IS ABOUT As a reward for his hard work, Christopher was honored in front of hundreds of people at a Pro-Everglades rally in Tallahassee. He was introduced to several influential policy makers and was able to discuss his concerns. Furthermore, he had the opportunity to meet Jimmy Buffett, Ms. Florida, Bill Nye the Science Guy and Superintendent of Everglades National Park Pedro Ramos. Last but not least, Christopher met President Obama on Earth Day. “The Ramos boys are dedicated to the restoration and preservation of the Florida Everglades,” says father Paul via email. “We believe in educating and motivating young people to advocate for the benefit of this one of a kind national treasure.” Immediately after last year’s bike ride the family decided that in 2016 they would raise money for the Everglades Foundation by kayaking on Florida Bay, where the Everglades meets the ocean. Unfortunately, because of many man-made problems, the bay is struggling and its health is a bellwether for the Everglades as a whole. The event, scheduled for April 10, seeks to bring 50 children together for the paddle, with each expected to bring in $200 in pledges. Goody bags, snacks, water and medals will be provided to all participants, while kayaks and paddleboards will be donated by Florida Bay Outfitters. For more information about the Ramos boys and to register for the event please visit ramosboyssavetheeverglades.com.

Spring Cleaning

PRING IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER (HELLO MARCH 20!) AND WHILE the season means an end to winter doldrums for most, it’s also traditionally and historically a time to organize, clean and generally hit refresh on all aspects of our life. Not sure where to start? Take a tip from our experts below and get a head start on a time-honored tradition. BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

Jacobs’ Top Ten Tips for Getting Organized

O

sional organizer and owner of Miami-based AcTuaLLy Organized. “These clutter items hold you back, letting go frees up space and allows the beauty of a space to shine through.” The key to making it through a major overhaul is to start small, says Jacobs. Approaching spring cleaning one task at a time and breaking it down into smaller

RGANIZING A HOME CAN BE AN OVERWHELMING PROCESS and getting started can easily go from good intentions to giving up. But powering through the initial fear will leave you with more than just a de-cluttered living room. “Organizing clears out the old unused, unwanted, broken, unloved items that take up valuable space in your home,” says Gayle Jacobs, profes-

steps will allow novices to schedule specific times to attack the problem without becoming discouraged or overwhelmed. “Pick one area that is the most problematic, starting with one room and then divide that job into smaller doable segments,” says Jacobs. “Pick one area of a room, perhaps one shelf of the closet, one cabinet at a time.”

So for those who need a little expert advice, here are Jacobs’ ten tips for getting started:

1 5 8

Begin with a small area. Pick an area that you can finish in oneto-two hours and give yourself a time frame to clear and organize.

4

Looked at each item and make a decision on what to keep, what to donate and what to trash.

Determine where an item should live. Ask yourself “Does this belong here? Does it make sense to keep it here? Is there a closer or more convenient place to keep it?”

7

6

3

Enlist family and or a friend to help keep you on track.

Make use of all walls and doors, either using hooks, bars, or over the door storage systems.

Some spaces are easy to access while some spaces are more difficult. Place items that you use everyday in easy accessible spaces and those items used less often in spaces that are less accessible.

9

S

Use your space to its maximum by looking at the height, width and depth of an area. Get containers that fit that space.

O NOW YOU’VE CLEANED YOUR CLOSETS LIKE A PRO… BUT what to do with all the, ahem, leftovers? Consign it, says Jennifer Kaloti, owner of Pinecrest’s The Recycled Closet. A longtime consignment shopper, Kaloti opened The Recycled Closet in 2008 and soon became a go-to source for South Florida fashionistas, earning accolades including AOL City’s Best, CBS 4 Miami Best Thrift Shop in South Florida 2010, and Miami New Times Best Thrift Shop 2013. “Consignment is a great way to make a little extra money without any hassles,” says Kaloti.

JACOBS’ ORGANIZATIONAL MANTRA

T

he initial overhaul may actually be the easy part when a beautifully-organized room takes on a not-so-organized family. “Make it a quest of yours to be ruthless when it comes to your decluttering efforts,” says Jacobs. “You’ll have less to dust, less clutter to look it, an easier time finding the things you do use and less stress in your life.” To get family and friends on board Jacobs says she uses this simple mantra: If you take it out, put it away. If you open it, close it. If you finish it, replace it. If it’s full, empty it. If you take it off, hang it up.

When putting things back into a closet or into a cabinet you may need some organizing tools to maximize your space. Take a look at shelf dividers, drawer dividers or risers to double the space of a shelf. Lazy susans are great for hard to reach corners and work especially well in big corner cabinets. Shelf dividers help purses to be stored upright without slouching over.

Create the vision of how you want the space to look. Remember your vision of a beautifully cleared and organized space and how good that feels. Be strong and let go of the things that no longer serve your best interest.

If it’s dirty, wash it. If it’s garbage, trash it.

With everything in its pace and a place for everything you are now organized.

Here are her tips for making the most of your closet.

Dr. Soler-Baillo explains that The Angle® is a subcutaneous microderma sculpting method that he has perfected and that achieves two goals: sculpting the neck and jaw line and tightening the skin. Together, these changes make the patient look thinner, younger, and more attractive. The Angle® can be performed under local anesthesia or with light sedation. The procedure takes less than thirty minutes, and patients make a full recovery in approximately three days. Unlike other procedures or injections that address the neckline, The Angle® is a one-time procedure that delivers consistent, reliable results. ARCH IS COLORECTAL CANCER AWARENESS MONTH AND colorectal cancer expert Dr. Michael D. Hellinger; a colorectal surgeon in Miami is trying to raise awareness of this potentially

Americans will develop colorectal cancer in their lifetime. At any time, over one million Americans are currently living with colorectal cancer.

Over 56,000 people are expected to die from this disease each year. However, it is a preventable and very curable disease if caught early." Because there are often no symptoms in its early stages, colorectal cancer can only be caught early through regular screening. "The benefits of early detection and treatment are dramatic," Dr. Hellinger says. "The possibility of curing patients after symptoms develop is only 50%, but if colorectal cancer is found and treated at an early stage before symptoms develop, the opportunity to cure it is 80% or better.” "Most colon cancers start as noncancerous growths called polyps. If we are able to find these polyps, we remove them thus preventing cancer. It has been estimated that upwards of 90% of all colon cancer could be prevented with routine screening exams," Dr. Hellinger adds. Colorectal surgeons are experts in the surgical and nonsurgical treatment of colon and rectal problems and play an instrumental role in the effective screening, prevention and treatment this deadly disease. Studies have shown that patients treated by colorectal surgeons are more likely to survive colorectal cancer because of their advanced training and the large number of surgeries for these conditions that they perform. Dr. Michael Hellinger is Board Certified in General and Colon and Rectal Surgery. He specializes in the treatment of diseases of the colon & rectum with expertise in fecal incontinence, minimally invasive colorectal cancer, & laparoscopic surgery and anorectal diseases. For more information on these diseases, as well as, colorectal cancer screening call Dr. Hellinger at 305-858-1515.

EARLY SCREENING IS ESSENTIAL IN PREVENTING AND INCREASING CURE RATE.

ASCRS SCREENING GUIDELINES The American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS), supports the following American Cancer Society colorectal cancer screening guidelines: · For people at average risk of getting colorectal cancer these are acceptable options all starting at the age of 50: 1. Colonoscopy (a test that allows the physician to look directly at the lining of the entire colon and rectum) every 10 years. While this is the best test there are other options that may be discussed with your physician: 2. Digital rectal examination and fecal occult blood test, which screens for hidden blood in the stool, annually. 3. Flexible sigmoidoscopy (a test that allows the physician to look directly at the lining of the lower 1/3 of the colon),every 5 years. 4. Barium enema (x-ray of the colon) every 5 to 10 years. · People at increased risk for colorectal cancer include: 1. Those with a personal or family history of colorectal polyps or cancer 2. Those with a personal history of breast, uterine or ovarian cancer 3. Those with chronic ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease. · Increased risk patients may need earlier and more frequent screening depending upon the recommendation of their healthcare provider. PREVENTION TIPS Dr. Hellinger notes that in addition to timely and regular screening for colorectal cancer, people may be able to lower their risk of getting the disease by: · Avoiding foods that are high in animal fat and red meat. · Eating plenty of vegetables, fruits and other high-fiber foods. · Exercising regularly and maintaining a normal body weight. · Not smoking and drinking alcohol in moderation.

Celebrate your 50th with cake, candles & colonoscopy. Regular screening, at age 50, is the key to preventing colorectal cancer. It’s preventable, treatable & beatable! Call to schedule your screening colonoscopy:

St. Patrick’s Day Facts and Figures BY LUIS ORTEGA, OWNER, SECURITY ARMS INTERNATIONAL

E

VERY YEAR IN MID MARCH, THE IRISH OF AMERICA (AND the world) turn green for St. Patrick’s Day to commemorate the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. What began as a religious feast day for the patron saint has now become an international celebration that includes parades, shamrocks, wearing green, and drinking Irish beer and whiskey (and attending mass or service). Here are some facts and figures regarding this festive period.

Who is St. Patrick? The patron saint was not born in Ireland, but in Britain, in the latter half of the 4th century. Kidnapped by pirates in Wales at 16, he was sold into slavery in Ireland where he tended sheep for about 10 years before he escaped back to England. Eventually, he made it to France, where a monastery in Gaul would give him refuge for 12 years. After becoming a priest, he took his teachings back to Ireland, establishing the religious system of Rome and originating the Christian Church in Ireland, with the Pope’s blessing. For 20 years, he traveled across the country, converting the pagan Gaelic Irish to Christianity, baptizing and confirming, establishing monasteries, and developing a native clergy. He died on March 17, AD 461, and that day has been commemorated as St. Patrick’s Day ever since.

Why Green? Because wearing green makes one invisible to leprechauns, which are fairy creatures who pinch anyone they can see (anyone not wearing green). St. Patrick’s revelers then began pinching those who didn’t wear green to remind them that leprechauns would sneak up and pinch green-abstainers.

What’s up with the leprechauns?

An Irish fairy, often dressed as a shoemaker with a leather apron and a cocked hat. Legend says that they’re not friendly, loners, and simply live to make shoes. Also known is that leprechaun possesses a pot of gold and, to find them, one just must listen for the sound of the shoemakers’ hammers. Once confronted, the Leprechaun will reveal the location of his pot of gold if threatened; however, one must never take the eyes off of a leprechaun, or he will vanish!

Why a shamrock? Legend says that St. Patrick used a three-leaf shamrock to explain the holy trinity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, which explains his association to this symbol during these festivities. The shamrock is also an ancient symbol for the triple goddess Brigit. And it said that “three” is Ireland’s magic number. Hence, “Crone, Mother, and Virgin;”;“Love, Valor, and Wit;” and “Faith, Hope, and Charity;” and “three accomplishments well regarded in Ireland are: a clever verse, music on the harp, and the art of shaving faces.”

The Comfort of Hospice Care

A

S HOSPICE PROGRAMS BECOME MORE PREVALENT, PATIENTS AND THEIR families are sharing their final moments in the comfort of the same home where they have shared their cherished life experiences. Hospice programs primarily provide medical management to alleviate symptoms to the primary illness. Hospice care is also available to care for patients so that they live comfortably and with dignity until they pass away. A hospice program’s goal is to help the patient’s family feel comfortable and share in their final moments with as much serenity as possible. Hospice patients have a broad range of needs. An interdisciplinary team is needed in order to coordinate their care and provide attention their family merits. Hospice Care of South Florida, for example, has teams comprised of a hospice aid, nurses, a physician, social workers, spiritual leaders, care managers and volunteers in order to make sure that the patient receives comprehensive medical care during this special circumstance of their life.

For Life’s Difficult Moments Hospice Care of South Florida’s dedicated Interdisciplinary Team provides a broad range of services aimed at keeping the patient living comfortably and with dignity.

Hospice provides medications, medical equipment and supplies necessary to promote comfort for the patient.

Life limiting illnesses can cause emotional and spiritual distress. Hospice care programs usually have case management teams that coordinate with social workers, and in some cases, connect the patient and their family to pastoral services, to provide ongoing support for the entire family throughout their hospice experience and for at least a year after the patient’s death. Bereavement programs are often also in place in order to help the patient’s family cope with the passing of a loved one. Hospice programs provide pain management and appropriate palliative care when curative medical treatments no longer enhance the quality of life of the patient. The caregiver, or hospice aid, is in constant communication with the rest of the team to identify physical and emotional changes. They will be present most days the patient is in hospice care. Nurses also constantly assess the vital signs of the patient to evaluate their stability and whether any further action, such as pain medication, is required. Hospice programs are available to assist and help the patient feel comfortable. Hospice Care of South Florida, for example, teaches and assists families to meet the physical and emotional needs that accompany this time in their lives by providing unremitting care and education before, during and after the hospice care is needed. The mission of a hospice care program, and that of Hospice Care of South Florida, is to provide quality of life care services that bring choices to the patients served. Pilates and A Healthy Spine BY SABINE GEMPEL, DPT

“If your spine is inflexibly stiff at 30, you are old; if it is completely flexible at 60, you are young.” -- Joseph Pilates’

F

OR MANY OF US, THE MAJORITY OF OUR DAY IS SPENT sitting at work, sitting in the car, sitting on the couch and lying in bed. If we’re being good we might run, use the elliptical or stairmaster, or go to a spinning class. All great options but there’s something missing. All the aforementioned activities are in what’s called the “sagittal plane,” where everything is moving forwards and backwards. There is very little side bending or rotation in the spine- or even the extremities. A healthy spine is able to move in all directions with an appropriate distribution of movement throughout the entire spine. When we focus on only one direction of movement, usually flexion, we lose both flexibility and stability in all other directions. Spinal range of motion in all directions also helps to hydrate the discs that act as cushions between each vertebrae of the spine. This can put your spine at risk for injury. So what exercise can we do to keep our spine healthy? Pilates of course! One of the reasons Pilates is so helpful for spinal health is because it incorporates spinal flexion, extension, sidebending and rotation. Pilates emphasizes spinal articulation, which simply means moving each vertebrae of the spine one at a time. For example, in the exercise bridging you roll the spine off and on the mat from the coccyx up to the sacrum to the lumbar spine and thoracic spine. As each individual vertebrae along the spine moves, the small local stabilizing muscles (multifidi) are activated. This is so important with back pain because research shows that very often with low back pain the multifidi are dormant and the global stabilizers (erector spinae muscles) become overactive. When this happens you start to feel those long erector spinae muscles becoming tight, overdeveloped, and eventually painful. Once you reawaken the small multifidi, you allow those long, bigger erector spinae muscles to relax. Another muscle that often becomes dormant or slow to respond is the transverse abdominus, the deepest layer of your abdominals. This muscle originates all the way around the back- the lumbar fascia- and anterior iliac crest (or hip bones) and wraps around the front to act like a corset. When engaged it pulls the belly in and provides support to the thoracolumbar fascia (TLF). When the TLF is supported it allows all the many muscles that connect to it to function better. Of course there are many other causes of lower back pain that sometimes require physical therapy intervention. At Pilates in the Grove you can have it all. Clients can undergo an initial assessment with one of our licensed physical therapists prior to starting their Pilates classes. If Physical Therapy is indicated, one of our skilled therapists can help realign the spine and pelvis, release fascial restrictions and address any muscle imbalances. Afterwards, a regular Pilates practice can help maintain a healthy, flexible spine so that you will stay, and feel, forever young. A board certified physical therapist and Pilates Method Alliance certified Pilates instructor, Sabine Gempel is a highly educated fitness expert with a Doctorate in Physical Therapy. Sabine remains affiliated with University of Miami Miller School of Medicine as a physical therapy lab assistant in the areas of musculoskeletal, cardiopulmonary, anatomy, and clinical skills. She has also pursued continued education in the discipline of Myofascial Release, and served as a physical therapy volunteer at the ING Miami Marathon. Through her unique background of medicine and dance, coupled with her passion for health, fitness and sports, she provides her clients with a positive and safe movement experience. R E AL ESTAT E TALK

I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Move BY FRANK DEVALDIVIELSO

S

O, WHEN IS THE APPROPRIATE TIME FOR THE ADULT SONS and daughters to move to their own abode? Is the decision driven by age, education, financial aptitude? Does it vary by culture? Families and their decisions are main drivers to the residential real estate industry. Have you met an unhappy empty-nester? Hard to find. In fact, they’re probably out to dinner right now, or, on vacation in Mont Tremblant, skiing, snowshoeing and indulging in après-ski activities. Wait for us! For less than $100,000 you can own a unit right on the slope. (See adjacent ad) When raising children during the years where they’re most malleable it’s important the children learn behaviors that build self worth and breed independence. Simple chores like cleaning the pool, cutting the lawn, cleaning their room, cooking a meal, washing their laundry and saving some of the allowance money will help develop the behaviors that will one day give them the confidence to fly away and give the parents the satisfaction and joy of the empty nest. The culture in Spain is one where homes are passed down from generation to generation. In fact, my family has lived in the same house for several generations. The cousins (now in their 40’s and 50’s) all live in the same small town. Their kids’ ambitions include to grow up and have a family in the same town. The oldest generation, however, enjoys having their kids and grandkids all within a very small geographic radius. It’s typical to have a Sunday meal with many of them gathered at one or another home. That’s a beautiful image and vision, if you’re so inclined. These adult sons and daughters stay home until they marry, in most cases. The nest is full, no vacancies. In my experience, the culture in the U.S. is one where, at an extreme, the kids move out when they’re eighteen. The generation of millennials are eager to move out on their own and continue living the American Dream. So, what is the best way to help the youngsters fly the coop? In our real estate business, we’ve seen different approaches by parents. One that provides the down payment necessary for the adult sons and daughters’ first home, or, another where the parents welcome the millennials along with their significant other into the home so that they can save money; all the while developing their skills to generate income, finish their education and manage finances. This creates future demand for homes. What is your choice? The empty nest may not be imminent. But, there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and it looks like daylight. Millennials don’t want to live in their parents’ house, nor the neighborhood it’s in. They would much rather live in the Wynwood area, Brickell, Grove or anywhere there is action. Certainly not in beautiful suburbia. It’s only the first eighteen to thirty-five years of parenting that are hard. After that, we see the empty nesters enjoying the paradise that is South Florida and all it offers. And some even get to enjoy grandchildren nearby! La joie de vivre! ALI IS A TWO YEAR OLD MINI ENGLISH BULLDOG. SHE IS VERY FRIENDLY and loves to roll over and have her pink belly rubbed. She is a typical lazy and hungry bulldog, whose domain is the kitchen, where she loves to watch all the cooking take place. Dali also does a grand job of keeping the floor sparkling clean. She loves to chase lizards, and sometimes attempts to scare off squirrels. She is no real threat, however, because she is slow, salivates loudly and runs out of juice quickly. Dali snores and loves to try to jump up on people’s laps. She plays tug-of-war and her favorite toy is the rope with two balls on the end. This past Halloween she went outside to play in the mud, and that’s why she was dressed up as a dirty little devil.

OWADAYS, THERAPISTS, SPORT COACHES, AND TRAINERS UNDERSTAND the benefits of aquatic therapy for people. The benefits for dogs are also well documented, and are strongly supported by the Canine Sport Medicine and Rehabilitation field of veterinary medicine. For dogs, aquatic therapy refers mainly to therapy in an underwater treadmill (UWTM). This mode of therapy, where the patient enters a water tank with a treadmill at the bottom, was first developed for racing horses in the 1970s. It was later introduced as a physical therapy tool for people in the mid 1980s. Finally, it was developed for dog’s at the end of the 1990s. Why is the UWTM such an important tool for canine physical therapy? Therapy in an UWTM allows the performance of exercises for balance and movement safely and pain free; well before the exercises can be attempted on land. For this reason, it is an ideal modality following orthopedic surgery, allowing the dog to return to normal functional mobility early in the post surgical period. For neurological patients unable to walk, the UWTM therapy reduces the atrophying effects of immobility while facilitating proprioceptive gait training (awareness of one’s limbs in space), speeds gait training, and improves the active range of motion of all joints as compared to land exercises. For arthritic senior pets, the UWTM therapy will improve balance and coordination while strengthening the muscles and enhancing cardio endurance. Athletic dogs will strengthen muscles and improve their muscle and cardiopulmonary endurance, which translates to improved performance in competitions. The UWTM represents also an important part of an effective weight loss program for obese dogs, raising their metabolic rate and improving their ability to burn fat. An advantage of the UWTM therapy is that it gives the therapist the option to change water depth, resistance, and speed of the treadmill as needed. These variables allow a consistently progressive physical therapy plan to be implemented. In addition, the warm water temperature offers soothing muscle relaxation. Assistive devices and modalities - such as elastic bands, flippers, tail work, water currents through use of jets, manual therapies and massage, to name a few - are frequently employed while performing therapy in the UWTM. Interested? Before considering therapy in an UWTM, your best option is to have your dog evaluated by a licensed veterinarian certified in canine rehabilitation, and with vast experienced in UWTM therapy. This is critical in the case of geriatric dogs, dogs with concurrent medical conditions, and simply for peace of mind. A complete medical history that includes medical diagnosis, prescribed medications, supplements, past surgeries, and sports injuries is required. A complete exam from the perspective of a physical therapist is essential. A clinical assessment and a water therapy customized plan will be formulated. Measurable outcome goals will be established. The dog will be reassessed periodically, and the water therapy will be modified according to the dog’s progress until the rehabilitation goals are reached. Each therapeutic program is individualized and cannot be pre-formulated. A maintenance program can be initiated once the water rehabilitation goals have been reached, or as a way of cross training. UWTM is also a valid feline physical therapy modality for cats that are comfortable in water. The properties of water (buoyancy, hydrostatic pressure, fluid dynamics and resistance) make UWTM therapy an excellent tool for achieving canine physical therapy goals and maintaining total body fitness. UWTM therapy have been an integral part of our animal physical therapy services for 13 years. We invite you to visit us for a demonstration, or to inquire if your pet might benefit from this modality.

For more information visit mythinspa.com or instagram at @thinspaofficial.

On January 29, The South Miami Middle School club called “The Power of One” donated fifty brand new blankets to the South Miami Police Department so that every patrol officer on duty during their shifts could offer a clean blanket to the local homeless population in an effort to protect them from the cold weather.
