Experience Nail Care in a Whole New Way!

The eighth grade language arts students of Palmetto Middle School under the direction of Ms. Beverley Harrison won this year’s Fairchild Challenge by creating a four-page newspaper focused on how humans interact with plants. To develop the stories for this newspaper, students conducted 78 interviews of elders to find out how plants affect their lives. The challenge was to determine what plants they consider are an important part of their culture and family tradition, and what plants they would want to take with them if they had to make a one way trip. They were asked about plants used for medicinal, ornamental, and eating purposes. Students interviewed elders who originated from all the continents except Australia. They got responses from people from Chile, Haiti, Central African Republic, Morocco, Spain, and the United Kingdom, to name a few. Students then added their input as to what plants they feel are important to them, and then the input was categorized under Traditional, Medicine, Food, and Ornament. Not only did they win first place, they also made an impact on their own communities and families by connecting with their elders.

PRELIMINARY SCHOOL PERFORMANCE GRADES

3400 SPA PEDICURE & MANICURE Must mention this ad

$

The Florida Department of Education released the Preliminary 2014-2015 School Performance Grades for all schools. Results are based on the school grading rule and scale that were adopted by the State Board of Education in Tallahassee on January 6, 2016. Since 2014-2015 was the first year of the administration of a new state assessment, these School Performance Grades are devoid of learning gains. Learning gains have historically represented an important component of the school grades calculation as it takes into account student growth, particularly for the large population of English language learners and special education students in Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS). “Considering the transitional nature of this year’s accountability system and its reliance on performance data devoid of learning gains, today’s school grade release demonstrates the teaching and curriculum development ingenuity of our educators and administrators, ensuring that our students excel despite new and more rigorous grading system measurements,” said Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho. “With performance that outpaced similar districts and the state as a whole, students, parents, teachers, and employees should take great pride in this accomplishment.” Despite more rigorous standards, a more complex assessment, and a less than ideal testing platform delivery, M-DCPS has a higher percentage of “A” rated schools than schools statewide. M-DCPS also outperformed virtually every comparable district including Broward, Duval, and Hillsborough counties, on the percentage of “A” and “F” schools, and Palm Beach on the percentage of “F” schools.

Palmer Trinity School (PTS) student, Isabella Gomez, won the Best Overall category for her submission in Youth Service America (YSA) Global Goals Poster Contest. “Isabella is a talented student, and we are proud she has used her creative skills to shine a further light on the need for gender equality and the empowerment of women,” said Dr. Manjula Salomon to Associate Head of School for Academic Affairs. Launched in 2015, the contest challenges students to think critically about the Sustainable Development Goals and to create an illustration through photography, drawing, painting or graphics. The overall goal of the contest is to demonstrate how youths will “lead us to a better future.” YSA’s Global Goals contest received hundreds of submissions from 24 countries around the world, covering all 17 Sustainable Development Goals. YSA is a resource center that partners with thousands of organizations that are committed to increasing the quality and quantity of volunteer opportunities for young people ages 5-25 to serve locally, nationally, and globally.

Pinecrest was officially incorporated on March 12, 1996. It is Miami-Dade County’s 29th municipality. Cindie Blanck, Barry Blaxberg, Leslie Bowe, and Robert Hingston made up the first Village Council and were sworn in at Pinecrest Elementary School. The first Village police station was located in Suniland Shopping Center and was dedicated in 1997. The Village’s first major capital project was a five-year initiative to resurface all roadways. Pinecrest Parkway was dedicated in 1999 and signed into law by former Pinecrest resident Jeb Bush. The portion of Southwest 111 street named ““Franz and Louise Scherr Street” was dedicated in honor of Parrot Jungle’s founders. The Pinecrest Branch of the Miami-Dade Public Library System at Pinecrest Gardens opened in late 2008. Pinecrest Gardens was listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of the Interior in 2011. The Village’s first traffic circle (at 104th and 60th avenue) was completed in 2014. Pinecrest’s zip code (33156) has been consistently ranked as one of the most expensive zip codes in the United States. The Village is made up of 7.5 square miles of land and is 0.13 percent water. The area originally evolved around one of Miami’s first tourist attractions… Parrot Jungle and Gardens. Another famed tourist attraction, The Miami Serpentarium, lived on the site of the current Municipal Center until the mid-80s. Chapman Field Drive is named for the former Chapman Field Army Air Base established in 1918 and is currently the site of the United States Department of Agriculture Research Station located on Old Cutler Road along the Village’s eastern boundary. Palmetto Senior High School’s notable alumni include Amazon founder Jeff Bezos; Fifth Harmony singer Camila Cabello; Zoo Miami’s Ron Magill; basketball player Tim Hardaway, Jr; and Surgeon General of the United States Vivek Murthy. The Village of Pinecrest is nationally recognized as a Tree City USA, a Playful City USA and a Community of Respect. Fairchild Tropical Botanic Gardens gets its name from one of the most famous plant explorers in history, David Fairchild, who was known for traveling the world in search of useful plants. The first permanent resident of what would later become the Village of Pinecrest was John J.Hinson, who built his home on the southeast corner of 102nd Street and US 1, facing the unpaved Dixie Highway. There was once a Rare Bird Farm in the heart of Pinecrest, complete with exotic animals, including penguins who escaped onto Dixie Highway and backed up traffic all the way South to Perrine. In 1916, Miami-Dade County purchased a five-acre parcel called Rock Pit #21 and, in 1938, added 3.5 acres and dedicated the land for park use. On September 8, 1962, the county officially agreed to develop the property with athletic facilities including baseball and football fields and basketball courts and the modern-day Suniland Park was born.

Selling Your Home?

Spring OF THINGS GET INTO THE

BY ROSIE CRUZ-SOTERO, REALTOR®

Although weather is still cooler than usual in South Florida, spring is a hot time to sell a home. Here are some tips on how you can improve the odds that your home will “blossom” among the myriad of new listings hitting the spring-time real estate market: GET A HEAD START ON CLUTTER Since you’ll eventually be moving, why not start packing now? Starting the packing process early will help get you mentally and physically ready to move. This means getting organized by sorting through storage closets, attics, and garages to determine items you may want to keep and others you’ll want to give away or sell. Getting rid of stacks of unpaid bills, unread newspapers, refrigerator notes, and other visible items is just as important. While everyone has clutter, it can certainly be a deterrent for buyers who want to envision themselves in your home. CLEAN-UP Cleaning your house inside and out will create an inviting feeling for potential buyers. They will be drawn to spotless windows, sparkling mirrors and floors, and the scent of crisp linens. Send your window coverings to the dry cleaners, thoroughly vacuum blinds or toss into a soapy bathtub, and steam-clean all area rugs and carpets. CURB APPEAL Before potential buyers step foot into your home, the first-impressionclock starts ticking. Start with your lawn: clean out dead leaves and debris, and consider a diagonally mowed lawn to make your yard appear larger. Don’t let overgrown foliage block the windows or entrance path. Give your front door a squeaky clean-over and repaint for a fresh look. Plant colorful flowers near the entrance, especially yellow ones, which stimulate buying urges, happiness, and contentment.

MINOR IMPROVEMENTS While you don’t necessarily want to invest in major improvements before you sell, you’d be surprised the results minor enhancements and repairs can yield. Considering the value kitchens and bathrooms add to a home, quick updates like painting or replacing dated hardware and fixtures, can add a significant impact. If your kitchen lacks a backsplash, this is the perfect time to add one for a touch of charm. Also, try replacing the caulk and grout in your bathroom, and resurface any bathtubs. Evaluate the spaces in your home that have the boldest color and tone them down to a neutral palette. This way, buyers can envision a blank canvas for their own décor. INTERVIEW REALTORS® Your choice of a listing agent will make a big difference in how quickly your home sells and how much of a profit you’ll generate. Interview several agents to evaluate which ones have a deep local knowledge of similar homes in your price range and area. A REALTOR® with a great marketing plan, local and global resources and professional tech tools is crucial in promoting your home. Be wary of REALTORS who tell you they can sell for the highest price; instead choose someone who can present you with a detailed market analysis. Planting the SEEDS of Education BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

NAME:

Tiffany Graver-Smith The SEED School of Miami BACKGROUND: Though Graver-Smith calls her upbringing “fortunate,” she also admits that she wasn’t immune to financial struggle. Through it all her mom still pushed her to attend college, making her the first in her family to do so (she got her Bachelor’s from the University of Miami). “My mom always said, ‘No matter what happens in life, no one can take away your education,’” she says. To that end Graver-Smith has dedicated her career to helping others fulfill that dream, currently as Donor Relations Manager and Assistant to the President at The SEED School Miami, South Florida’s first college-preparatory, public boarding school. Graver-Smith was no stranger to community work when the school “fell into her lap,” having worked with nonprofits such as Honey Shine prior to learning about SEED. After a chance meeting with a real estate agent who told her about the program, Graver-Smith returned home and immediately looked them up. “I was blown away by their mission and thought this was a game changer for Miami,” she says. “I knew I had to be involved. Within a week, I was brought on as a founding member of the team and the rest is history.” ABOUT THE SEED SCHOOL: SEED Miami provides a 24-hour college preparatory holistic approach to learning to some of the community’s most vulnerable children, recruiting students from underserved areas in South Florida. So far, more than 90 percent of all SEED graduates have enrolled in college and the Miami school (there are others in Washington DC and Baltimore) is now in its second year, with 96 students in grades six and seven. In addition to academics, the school provides everything from healthy meals and extracurricular outings (think Heat games and Broadway shows at the Arsht) to character development, college counseling and more. “We are essentially breaking the cycle of poverty by preparing our students academically and socially,” says Graver-Smith. REALIZING A DREAM: Graver-Smith says the school’s “Dream Ceremony,” in which incoming students share their dreams for the future is an incredibly special moment for her and the rest of the staff and families. “We learn our students’ dreams for the future, such as becoming a Judge, going to college, or traveling to China,” she says. “This gives us a unique opportunity to begin helping our students prepare for those dreams. One of the special components of my job is providing our students with a hands-on experience unique to their ‘dream.’”

18

FUTURE PLANS: In addition to recruiting rising sixth graders for next year’s academic year, Graver-Smith says fundraising is high priority when it comes to supporting the long-term sustainability of the school. “I encourage members of the community to contact me and tour our school to learn more about how our students’ time at SEED is changing their lives, because seeing is believing.”

‘‘

I am so grateful to those families who have put their trust in me and welcomed me into their lives to help their children. I’m blessed beyond words to have created long-lasting relationships with children around the community, whom I get to watch blossom into the incredible young adults they are today. ”

Vineland Students Set Out To Save Everglades BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

L

AST YEAR, NINE-YEAR-OLD CHRISTOPHER RAMOS LEARNED ABOUT THE Everglades in his Vineland K-8 fourth grade class. Being a nature and animal lover, the lesson raised concerns for Christopher about threats to the panthers, manatees and alligators and spurred him into action. He came home that day and told his dad that he was going to save the Everglades. Christopher set to work, initially setting a plan to place flyers around his neighborhood and organize a bake sale and eventually (on a suggestion from Dad Paul) settling on a charity bike ride to benefit a local Everglades-focused charity. Two months later, with the help of older brother Paul Michael and younger brother Ryan, he had raised $3,700.00 for the Everglades Foundation, an organization that helps teachers introduce students to key aspects of the Everglades ecosystem including its watershed, endangered species, water conservation and other topics.

As a reward for his hard work, Christopher was honored in front of hundreds of people at a Pro-Everglades rally in Tallahassee. He was introduced to several influential policy makers and was able to discuss his concerns. Furthermore, he had the opportunity to meet Jimmy Buffett, Ms. Florida, Bill Nye the Science Guy and Superintendent of Everglades National Park Pedro Ramos. Last but not least, Christopher met President Obama on Earth Day. “The Ramos boys are dedicated to the restoration and preservation of the Florida Everglades,” says father Paul via email. “We believe in educating and motivating young people to advocate for the benefit of this one of a kind national treasure.” Immediately after last year’s bike ride the family decided that in 2016 they would raise money for the Everglades Foundation by kayaking on Florida Bay, where the Everglades meets the ocean. Unfortunately, because of many man-made problems, the bay is struggling and its health is a bellwether for the Everglades as a whole. The event, scheduled for April 10, seeks to bring 50 children together for the paddle, with each expected to bring in $200 in pledges. Goody bags, snacks, water and medals will be provided to all participants, while kayaks and paddleboards will be donated by Florida Bay Outfitters. Massage, Debowsky Design Group, The Parenting Plan, Intellaclaim Public Adjusters, Marvin P. Stein, CPA, and Simon & Simon, P.A. “As I was thinking about all the great things that are continuously occurring at Palmetto Middle School, I recalled an old Yoruban proverb that wisely states, ‘It takes a whole village to raise a child,’” said Palmetto Middle School principal Jesus Gonzalez during the ribbon cutting ceremony. “Our own village of Pinecrest is a living example of that very proverb. Thanks to our parents, community and stakeholders, our students are able to experiences successes that would otherwise not be afforded them.”

It’s our duty as a local business to support that,” said Mitchell Panter managing partner of Panter, Panter & Sampedro. “After seeing the lab in person, our firm committed to go one step further and will purchase new televisions and additional technology to make sure that these kids have the tools that they need to get the most out of their education.” The fundraising drive was led by Panter, Panter, & Sampedro, which contributed to the purchase of more than 10 computers. Additional contributing businesses also included Preemo, Sunstate Bank, Clarin Eye Care, Scheckner & Hetenyi, PL, Station America, LTA Franchise d/b/a Shula Burger, Miss Ink, LLC, Brit Olom Tours, Elements

Pinecrest VPK Wins Statewide Contest

FOR EVERYTHING YOU’RE EXPECTING

A

S A PART OF THIS YEAR’S VOLUNTARY PREKINDERGARTEN (VPK) “10TH birthday,” the Pinecrest Elementary VPK classes entered a statewide classcreated parfait contest. In order to qualify for this contest schools were asked to submit a parfait recipe and sample using a fresh-from-Florida food item. Pinecrest VPK teachers Jennifer Carricaburu, Vicky Canino-Fernandez & Norma Meyer planned a morning field trip to Knaus Berry Farm where the VPK students learned about fresh Florida crops and how they are cared for. The school purchased strawberries, fresh Cinnamon Buns made on the farm, and homemade seedless strawberry jelly. Students enjoyed their day on the farm and finished off their visit with fresh milkshakes before heading back to school. Later that afternoon the teachers recalled their trip and collaborated to develop a recipe with fresh ingredients that followed requirements and criteria for the contest. Students and teachers then helped create a sample in class. Students also learned about the importance of our postal service, packaging and insulation as the teachers prepared the package for shipment. The recipe (as seen below) ended up taking third place in the statewide taste testing contest. Enjoy!

Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

LOCAL EXPERT OFFERS ADVICE DURING COLORECTAL CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

M

ARCH IS COLORECTAL CANCER AWARENESS MONTH AND colorectal cancer expert Dr. Michael D. Hellinger; a colorectal surgeon in Miami is trying to raise awareness of this potentially

life-threatening disease. "Colorectal cancer is the fourth most commonly occurring cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States. This disease affects both men and women equally and nearly 5% of

DR. MICHAEL HELLINGER

Americans will develop colorectal cancer in their lifetime. At any time, over one million Americans are currently living with colorectal cancer.

Over 56,000 people are expected to die from this disease each year. However, it is a preventable and very curable disease if caught early." Because there are often no symptoms in its early stages, colorectal cancer can only be caught early through regular screening. "The benefits of early detection and treatment are dramatic," Dr. Hellinger says. "The possibility of curing patients after symptoms develop is only 50%, but if colorectal cancer is found and treated at an early stage before symptoms develop, the opportunity to cure it is 80% or better.” "Most colon cancers start as noncancerous growths called polyps. If we are able to find these polyps, we remove them thus preventing cancer. It has been estimated that upwards of 90% of all colon cancer could be prevented with routine screening exams," Dr. Hellinger adds. Colorectal surgeons are experts in the surgical and nonsurgical treatment of colon and rectal problems and play an instrumental role in the effective screening, prevention and treatment this deadly disease. Studies have shown that patients treated by colorectal surgeons are more likely to survive colorectal cancer because of their advanced training and the large number of surgeries for these conditions that they perform. Dr. Michael Hellinger is Board Certified in General and Colon and Rectal Surgery. He specializes in the treatment of diseases of the colon & rectum with expertise in fecal incontinence, minimally invasive colorectal cancer, & laparoscopic surgery and anorectal diseases. For more information on these diseases, as well as, colorectal cancer screening call Dr. Hellinger at 305-858-1515.

EARLY SCREENING IS ESSENTIAL IN PREVENTING AND INCREASING CURE RATE.

ASCRS SCREENING GUIDELINES The American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS), supports the following American Cancer Society colorectal cancer screening guidelines: · For people at average risk of getting colorectal cancer these are acceptable options all starting at the age of 50: 1. Colonoscopy (a test that allows the physician to look directly at the lining of the entire colon and rectum) every 10 years. While this is the best test there are other options that may be discussed with your physician: 2. Digital rectal examination and fecal occult blood test, which screens for hidden blood in the stool, annually. 3. Flexible sigmoidoscopy (a test that allows the physician to look directly at the lining of the lower 1/3 of the colon),every 5 years. 4. Barium enema (x-ray of the colon) every 5 to 10 years. · People at increased risk for colorectal cancer include: 1. Those with a personal or family history of colorectal polyps or cancer 2. Those with a personal history of breast, uterine or ovarian cancer 3. Those with chronic ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease. · Increased risk patients may need earlier and more frequent screening depending upon the recommendation of their healthcare provider. PREVENTION TIPS Dr. Hellinger notes that in addition to timely and regular screening for colorectal cancer, people may be able to lower their risk of getting the disease by: · Avoiding foods that are high in animal fat and red meat. · Eating plenty of vegetables, fruits and other high-fiber foods. · Exercising regularly and maintaining a normal body weight. · Not smoking and drinking alcohol in moderation.

Celebrate your 50th with cake, candles & colonoscopy. Regular screening, at age 50, is the key to preventing colorectal cancer. It’s preventable, treatable & beatable! Call to schedule your screening colonoscopy:

ESIDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO JOIN WITH VILLAGE council members and staff for bike to work on Friday, March 4. Bikers will depart from Village Hall at 6:30 am to the Dadeland South Metrorail station and take the train to the University Metro Rail station in a county-wide effort to bike to work. Biking to work is a great way to “Get Fit.” We hope to see you there! We recommend that participants RSVP - available online. Infrastructure improvements continue – temporary and permanent traffic calming devices have been installed since the beginning of this New Year. One of the brighter ideas was the installation of the solar powered LED lighting, just installed along the original traffic circle at 160 and 82 avenue, just as was done for the 87 / 168 circle. Ideas and suggestions have been coming for other areas where this lighting would be of service. Please let us know your thoughts. Our annual celebration picnic is set for Saturday, March 5, beginning at 11 AM. Time to meet up with thousands of your closest friends for the usual roasted corn and picnic fare. I am looking forward to the annual Mayor’s Cup baseball game. Will Palmetto HS take home the Cup? Our area students will be performing at the picnic. Fun times as a reward for the hard work of our area students, parents, teachers and staff. Please continue to keep me up to date with what is important to you. A New Cure For A Common Problem

A

FFECTING ANYWHERE BETWEEN 20 TO 45 PERCENT OF middle-aged and elderly women (according to the North American Menopause Society), vaginal atrophy may be the least talked about, yet most common, problem for women of a certain age. Now there is a solution! The Mona Lisa Touch is an FDA-approved medical laser available for use in the U.S., replacing past treatment options such as hormone therapies, which are often laden with side effects or contraindications. So what is the Mona Lisa Touch and how does it work? Here’s what you need to know. WHAT IS VAGINAL ATROPHY AND WHAT CAUSES IT? Vaginal atrophy is a condition often coinciding with menopause in which the vaginal walls thin and dry out, creating issues with urinary functions, dryness and tightening as well as pain during sexual intercourse. Though often painful and frustrating for sufferers, few women ask for help –or know it exists. HOW DOES THE MONA LISA TOUCH WORK? The medical laser works similar to other laser treatments, counteracting the atrophy by stimulating collagen production inside the vagina rather than altering hormone levels; essentially rehydrating, reviving dead skin and improving the condition of the vaginal walls.

WHAT DOES THE PROCEDURE ENTAIL? Patients will receive three treatments spaced about six weeks apart. Each procedure takes only a few minutes to perform. The procedure is done in-office (patients feel only a small vibration) and requires no anesthesia or painkiller, with patients able to resume sexual intercourse after about 48 hours. After the three treatments, some patients may return for annual maintenance. HOW FAST WILL PATIENTS FEEL THE RESULTS? Many patients experience symptom relief after just one treatment and almost all feel a difference after the second. IS IT SAFE? A multisite study was conducted by two leading Urogynecologists who are experts in the field of postmenopausal gynecologic health; and recent results from a trial on postmenopausal women and breast cancer survivors showed positive results and high patient satisfaction. Spring Cleaning

PRING IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER (HELLO MARCH 20!) AND WHILE the season means an end to winter doldrums for most, it’s also traditionally and historically a time to organize, clean and generally hit refresh on all aspects of our life. Not sure where to start? Take a tip from our experts below and get a head start on a time-honored tradition. BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

Jacobs’ Top Ten Tips for Getting Organized

O

sional organizer and owner of Miami-based AcTuaLLy Organized. “These clutter items hold you back, letting go frees up space and allows the beauty of a space to shine through.” The key to making it through a major overhaul is to start small, says Jacobs. Approaching spring cleaning one task at a time and breaking it down into smaller

RGANIZING A HOME CAN BE AN OVERWHELMING PROCESS and getting started can easily go from good intentions to giving up. But powering through the initial fear will leave you with more than just a de-cluttered living room. “Organizing clears out the old unused, unwanted, broken, unloved items that take up valuable space in your home,” says Gayle Jacobs, profes-

steps will allow novices to schedule specific times to attack the problem without becoming discouraged or overwhelmed. “Pick one area that is the most problematic, starting with one room and then divide that job into smaller doable segments,” says Jacobs. “Pick one area of a room, perhaps one shelf of the closet, one cabinet at a time.”

So for those who need a little expert advice, here are Jacobs’ ten tips for getting started:

1 5 8

Begin with a small area. Pick an area that you can finish in oneto-two hours and give yourself a time frame to clear and organize.

4

Looked at each item and make a decision on what to keep, what to donate and what to trash.

Determine where an item should live. Ask yourself “Does this belong here? Does it make sense to keep it here? Is there a closer or more convenient place to keep it?”

7

6

3

Enlist family and or a friend to help keep you on track.

Make use of all walls and doors, either using hooks, bars, or over the door storage systems.

Some spaces are easy to access while some spaces are more difficult. Place items that you use everyday in easy accessible spaces and those items used less often in spaces that are less accessible.

9

S

Use your space to its maximum by looking at the height, width and depth of an area. Get containers that fit that space.

O NOW YOU’VE CLEANED YOUR CLOSETS LIKE A PRO… BUT what to do with all the, ahem, leftovers? Consign it, says Jennifer Kaloti, owner of Pinecrest’s The Recycled Closet. A longtime consignment shopper, Kaloti opened The Recycled Closet in 2008 and soon became a go-to source for South Florida fashionistas, earning accolades including AOL City’s Best, CBS 4 Miami Best Thrift Shop in South Florida 2010, and Miami New Times Best Thrift Shop 2013. “Consignment is a great way to make a little extra money without any hassles,” says Kaloti.

JACOBS’ ORGANIZATIONAL MANTRA

T

he initial overhaul may actually be the easy part when a beautifully-organized room takes on a not-so-organized family. “Make it a quest of yours to be ruthless when it comes to your decluttering efforts,” says Jacobs. “You’ll have less to dust, less clutter to look it, an easier time finding the things you do use and less stress in your life.” To get family and friends on board Jacobs says she uses this simple mantra: If you take it out, put it away. If you open it, close it. If you finish it, replace it. If it’s full, empty it. If you take it off, hang it up.

When putting things back into a closet or into a cabinet you may need some organizing tools to maximize your space. Take a look at shelf dividers, drawer dividers or risers to double the space of a shelf. Lazy susans are great for hard to reach corners and work especially well in big corner cabinets. Shelf dividers help purses to be stored upright without slouching over.

Create the vision of how you want the space to look. Remember your vision of a beautifully cleared and organized space and how good that feels. Be strong and let go of the things that no longer serve your best interest.

If it’s dirty, wash it. If it’s garbage, trash it.

With everything in its pace and a place for everything you are now organized.

WHAT ARE THE BEST ITEMS TO CONSIGN? We are a middle market store, so we take trend labels, everything from jeans, tops, jackets and formal gowns to handbags, shoes and jewelry. We like things from chain stores, department stores and boutiques.

and free from stains and tears. We typically look at 20-50 items at a time. Just bring them neatly folded in a shopping bag.

The Comfort of Hospice Care

A

S HOSPICE PROGRAMS BECOME MORE PREVALENT, PATIENTS AND THEIR families are sharing their final moments in the comfort of the same home where they have shared their cherished life experiences. Hospice programs primarily provide medical management to alleviate symptoms to the primary illness. Hospice care is also available to care for patients so that they live comfortably and with dignity until they pass away. A hospice program’s goal is to help the patient’s family feel comfortable and share in their final moments with as much serenity as possible. Hospice patients have a broad range of needs. An interdisciplinary team is needed in order to coordinate their care and provide attention their family merits. Hospice Care of South Florida, for example, has teams comprised of a hospice aid, nurses, a physician, social workers, spiritual leaders, care managers and volunteers in order to make sure that the patient receives comprehensive medical care during this special circumstance of their life.

For Life’s Difficult Moments Hospice Care of South Florida’s dedicated Interdisciplinary Team provides a broad range of services aimed at keeping the patient living comfortably and with dignity.

Hospice provides medications, medical equipment and supplies necessary to promote comfort for the patient.

Life limiting illnesses can cause emotional and spiritual distress. Hospice care programs usually have case management teams that coordinate with social workers, and in some cases, connect the patient and their family to pastoral services, to provide ongoing support for the entire family throughout their hospice experience and for at least a year after the patient’s death. Bereavement programs are often also in place in order to help the patient’s family cope with the passing of a loved one. Hospice programs provide pain management and appropriate palliative care when curative medical treatments no longer enhance the quality of life of the patient. The caregiver, or hospice aid, is in constant communication with the rest of the team to identify physical and emotional changes. They will be present most days the patient is in hospice care. Nurses also constantly assess the vital signs of the patient to evaluate their stability and whether any further action, such as pain medication, is required. Hospice programs are available to assist and help the patient feel comfortable. Hospice Care of South Florida, for example, teaches and assists families to meet the physical and emotional needs that accompany this time in their lives by providing unremitting care and education before, during and after the hospice care is needed. The mission of a hospice care program, and that of Hospice Care of South Florida, is to provide quality of life care services that bring choices to the patients served. IT ’S T HEIR BU S INES S

IN THEIR ELEMENT BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

W

HEN JUTTA AND MATIAS CAMPIANI RELOcated to Miami three years ago, the serial entrepreneurs were looking to take their business backgrounds into an area they found not only potentially profitable but also personally inspiring. Longtime believers in the power of alternative healing and prevention, the two found a perfect mix of business and pleasure in one idea: massage. Partnering with national franchise Elements, the Campiani’s set up shop in Dadeland Plaza two years ago this month with the aim to deliver a focused approach to relaxation and healing to the surrounding community. “I am a great believer in alternative ways of preventing and curing illnesses,” says Jutta, who runs the day-to-day business at Elements. “Healthy eating, sports, etc.… Massage is a great way to take care of your body, to heal your muscles.” The Campiani’s found the right partners in Elements, a success story that grew from just one Colorado-based studio (owned and operated by a licensed massage therapist) to more than 220 locations nationwide. For Jutta, it was a combination of the singular focus (“It’s not a little bit of this and that; it’s pure therapeutic approach.”) and the deep roots to the basics of massage therapy that drew her to Elements. “For the massage therapists that work for us [drawing on the founder’s knowledge] makes a big difference,” she says, noting the size of the rooms, the hydraulic tables and the therapists’ carefully-curated hours. “Being a massage therapist is a very physical job. It’s tiring and they have to take care of themselves as well.” At Elements, happy therapists equal happy clients. Since opening in March 2014, Jutta says she has been overwhelmed with the positive feedback from clients— many of whom have become weekly or monthly regulars. Part of the appeal of Elements, she says, is that it’s never the same experience twice. “We personalize and customize each massage to the particular needs of our customers,” says Jutta. “Even regular clients come in

with different needs each time – one day they may need deep tissue or trigger point work to release muscle tensions and another day they may need a massage with medium to light pressure for relaxation. It should always be a specific approach to match the needs of the client.” In addition to employing therapists (many of whom have been with the Campiani’s since opening) with varying specializations, Elements also goes a step farther, matching clients with the right therapist—depending on the type of massage and the pressure level they are looking for. “Everybody has a hectic lifestyle. time and to ground yourself,” says Jutta. “I think we are really achieving what we always set out to achieve. What our patients are saying! The office is beautiful and welcoming. The technology is very up to date. The hygienist was extremely patient and kind with my 6-year-old, whom until today, had not allowed anyone to clean his teeth. The Dentist was engaged, very informative and friendly. I would highly recommend the office to my friends and family. - Matt Great dental experience. I had been a little lax about my care needs, but that has just changed after my first visit. The entire dental team were awesome, and I’ve already scheduled my next visit. Thanks everybody. - Mark

They take their time to get the work on you done right. I live far from this place, but it’s worth the drive. - Peter Everyone from the moment I entered, to the moment I left, was amazing. Dr. Pinto and Dental Hygienist Yade, created the best dental experience I’ve ever had. The office is beyond clean and the technology used is amazing. I look forward to my next visit and having Dr. Pinto as my dentist. I will definitely recommend her to everyone of my friend and family in the area. - Karina

R E AL ESTAT E TALK

I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Move BY FRANK DEVALDIVIELSO

S

O, WHEN IS THE APPROPRIATE TIME FOR THE ADULT SONS and daughters to move to their own abode? Is the decision driven by age, education, financial aptitude? Does it vary by culture? Families and their decisions are main drivers to the residential real estate industry. Have you met an unhappy empty-nester? Hard to find. In fact, they’re probably out to dinner right now, or, on vacation in Mont Tremblant, skiing, snowshoeing and indulging in après-ski activities. Wait for us! For less than $100,000 you can own a unit right on the slope. (See adjacent ad) When raising children during the years where they’re most malleable it’s important the children learn behaviors that build self worth and breed independence. Simple chores like cleaning the pool, cutting the lawn, cleaning their room, cooking a meal, washing their laundry and saving some of the allowance money will help develop the behaviors that will one day give them the confidence to fly away and give the parents the satisfaction and joy of the empty nest. The culture in Spain is one where homes are passed down from generation to generation. In fact, my family has lived in the same house for several generations. The cousins (now in their 40’s and 50’s) all live in the same small town. Their kids’ ambitions include to grow up and have a family in the same town. The oldest generation, however, enjoys having their kids and grandkids all within a very small geographic radius. It’s typical to have a Sunday meal with many of them gathered at one or another home. That’s a beautiful image and vision, if you’re so inclined. These adult sons and daughters stay home until they marry, in most cases. The nest is full, no vacancies. In my experience, the culture in the U.S. is one where, at an extreme, the kids move out when they’re eighteen. The generation of millennials are eager to move out on their own and continue living the American Dream. So, what is the best way to help the youngsters fly the coop? In our real estate business, we’ve seen different approaches by parents. One that provides the down payment necessary for the adult sons and daughters’ first home, or, another where the parents welcome the millennials along with their significant other into the home so that they can save money; all the while developing their skills to generate income, finish their education and manage finances. This creates future demand for homes. What is your choice? The empty nest may not be imminent. But, there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and it looks like daylight. Millennials don’t want to live in their parents’ house, nor the neighborhood it’s in. They would much rather live in the Wynwood area, Brickell, Grove or anywhere there is action. Certainly not in beautiful suburbia. It’s only the first eighteen to thirty-five years of parenting that are hard. After that, we see the empty nesters enjoying the paradise that is South Florida and all it offers. And some even get to enjoy grandchildren nearby! La joie de vivre! FASHI O NISTA

Spring Into Warm Weather Fashion BY TENNILLE GUTIERREZ AND STEPHANIE HAGAN

A

HHH, MARCH. TIME TO STOW AWAY OUR UGG BOOTS AND NORTH FACE jackets, and remove the bordeaux polish from our nails. Spring is upon us and, in honor of the change in seasons, I’ve put together a list of spring must haves. 1. The Block Heel: As most women know, there is nothing more uncomfortable than a pointy pair of pumps. Louboutin’s or not, high heels equal pain. Thank God for the block heel trend. It’s the perfect way to get the sexy height we all seek but, without the torture. I’m obsessed with the Joie suede Flo Platform sandal with its lace up ankle ties, braided straps, and fringe detail. It is gorgeous and literally puts the “spring” in step. The Steve Madden Carrson sandal is a great and less expensive alternative for those on a budget. 2. The Floral Blouse: Spring is the season of rebirth, flowers, and nature so it’s no surprise that this would heavily influence the fashion runways. Opt for a dark botanical print blouse that can easily take you from day to night time. Balance the look with a solid color bottom to avoid the wallpaper look. I love this navy colored floral top from Threads Boutique and it pairs perfectly with white jeans or shorts. And YES, it’s March, you can wear white jeans again! 3. The Flare Jean: For those of you who refused to embrace the skinny jean, get excited because flare jeans are back. I have to admit, being a little short legged myself, I’m a big fan of the trouser/flare look. It’s an instant pick me up and an easy way to get that long and lean look. I love the Paige Transcend Boot Petite jeans. The transcend fabric is amazingly stretchy, soft, and won’t sag even hours after wearing them. 4. The Saddle Bag: Who doesn’t love a great bag? If you don’t own one already, the saddle bag will soon become your favorite accessory. With its slim shaped silhouette and crossbody wearability, the saddle bag is definitely one of the most comfortable and functional bags to own. If you’re splurging, my choice is the classic Chloe Marcie crossbody bag. It’s available in tons of colors and is the perfect balance between pretty and practical. I love that it has both handles and a detachable crossbody strap for versatility. Other favorites are the Botkier Trigger or Vince Camuto Baily crossbody bags. Beautiful bags without the hefty price tag. 5. The White Lace Dress: A gorgeous lace dress is a trend that transcends time and, in my opinion, is always “in.” It’s feminine, romantic, and classic. Depending on the style of the dress, it can be sophisticated and sexy without being trashy. One of my favorites is the Diane von Furstenberg Zarita Lace Sheath dress. It’s relatively short but it’s modest neckline and 3/4 sleeves compensate. It’s form fitting but not overly tight. And the v-back detail with top to bottom zipper gives this dress the perfect about sexy. I also love Kimchi & Blue Lacey Tee dress available at Urban Outfitters. It’s a steal at $69 and none would be the wiser. Now before you go out on a crazy shopping spree, remember to review your current wardrobe. Most trends are cyclical so think about the pieces you already own. Then, try to mix ’n match and incorporate them to freshen up your look. After all, style is about the mix, not the trend. OWADAYS, THERAPISTS, SPORT COACHES, AND TRAINERS UNDERSTAND the benefits of aquatic therapy for people. The benefits for dogs are also well documented, and are strongly supported by the Canine Sport Medicine and Rehabilitation field of veterinary medicine. For dogs, aquatic therapy refers mainly to therapy in an underwater treadmill (UWTM). This mode of therapy, where the patient enters a water tank with a treadmill at the bottom, was first developed for racing horses in the 1970s. It was later introduced as a physical therapy tool for people in the mid 1980s. Finally, it was developed for dog’s at the end of the 1990s. Why is the UWTM such an important tool for canine physical therapy? Therapy in an UWTM allows the performance of exercises for balance and movement safely and pain free; well before the exercises can be attempted on land. For this reason, it is an ideal modality following orthopedic surgery, allowing the dog to return to normal functional mobility early in the post surgical period. For neurological patients unable to walk, the UWTM therapy reduces the atrophying effects of immobility while facilitating proprioceptive gait training (awareness of one’s limbs in space), speeds gait training, and improves the active range of motion of all joints as compared to land exercises. For arthritic senior pets, the UWTM therapy will improve balance and coordination while strengthening the muscles and enhancing cardio endurance. Athletic dogs will strengthen muscles and improve their muscle and cardiopulmonary endurance, which translates to improved performance in competitions. The UWTM represents also an important part of an effective weight loss program for obese dogs, raising their metabolic rate and improving their ability to burn fat. An advantage of the UWTM therapy is that it gives the therapist the option to change water depth, resistance, and speed of the treadmill as needed. These variables allow a consistently progressive physical therapy plan to be implemented. In addition, the warm water temperature offers soothing muscle relaxation. Assistive devices and modalities - such as elastic bands, flippers, tail work, water currents through use of jets, manual therapies and massage, to name a few - are frequently employed while performing therapy in the UWTM. Interested? Before considering therapy in an UWTM, your best option is to have your dog evaluated by a licensed veterinarian certified in canine rehabilitation, and with vast experienced in UWTM therapy. This is critical in the case of geriatric dogs, dogs with concurrent medical conditions, and simply for peace of mind. A complete medical history that includes medical diagnosis, prescribed medications, supplements, past surgeries, and sports injuries is required. A complete exam from the perspective of a physical therapist is essential. A clinical assessment and a water therapy customized plan will be formulated. Measurable outcome goals will be established. The dog will be reassessed periodically, and the water therapy will be modified according to the dog’s progress until the rehabilitation goals are reached. Each therapeutic program is individualized and cannot be pre-formulated. A maintenance program can be initiated once the water rehabilitation goals have been reached, or as a way of cross training. UWTM is also a valid feline physical therapy modality for cats that are comfortable in water. The properties of water (buoyancy, hydrostatic pressure, fluid dynamics and resistance) make UWTM therapy an excellent tool for achieving canine physical therapy goals and maintaining total body fitness. UWTM therapy have been an integral part of our animal physical therapy services for 13 years. We invite you to visit us for a demonstration, or to inquire if your pet might benefit from this modality.

What is the Best way to Provide my Dog with Glucosamine? BY TAMI MAIER

LOVING PET CARE IN YOUR HOME OR MINE

V

ETERINARIANS WILL AGREE THAT ADDING GLUCOSAMINE TO AN ARTHRITIC dog’s diet will provide him/her with benefits. Some will offer a capsule, some will offer prescription dog food, and some will inform you about glucosamine labeled for humans that is safe for dogs. However, most commercial dog foods, even those that claim that they have high levels of glucosamine, are sadly lacking and will not provide your dog with an adequate dose. If a medium-sized dog (about 45 lbs) needs about 1,000 mg of glucosamine a day, the most commonly available dog foods will require anywhere from eight to 20 cups per day to be effective. Since your dog may only need to eat about three-to-four cups to stay at a healthy weight, dog food would not be the way to go to provide adequate glucosamine.

So, are there good natural sources of glucosamine? Since none of the dog foods, even the “prescription” diets, contain enough glucosamine for an arthritic dog, should you be buying pills, liquids or should you be providing a natural source of glucosamine? I am not a veterinarian, but my feeling is that natural sources of glucosamine probably provide a lot more medicinal benefit than what is available in a pill. Some of the foods containing glucosamine also provide vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids. Others, such as beef trachea, are almost pure cartilage and have about 5 percent glucosamine, so just a 1.6 oz or 30 gram piece will provide about 1400 mg, more than the recommended minimum dose to protect a medium-sized arthritic dog. I cannot tell you what is best to give your dog, but I can tell you what I use and what I would talk with your local veterinarian about. Chicken feet are inexpensive and should be a viable alternative to those who are buying expensive glucosamine supplements. I currently provide my Golden Retriever with two feet a day, which equals about 900 mg of glucosamine. If she develops arthritis I would increase it to four feet a day. Four feet would be more than the recommended dose, however, because I am giving it from a natural food source it does not hurt the dog. The only time you need to worry about giving too much glucosamine is when it is in an artificial form. Some cultures are so convinced of the effectiveness of chicken feet that they provide it as a regular meal for geriatric persons with arthritis. An though I’m not sure I will want my kids to give me chicken feet in my older years at least we know it is also safe for humans! O ALL MY FAITHFUL FOLLOWERS, ALL I CAN SAY IS, “MY BOOTS ARE PACKED and I’m moving to Nashville!” Well, not really, but let me share with you what has led to this yearning. Having been a late bloomer to the love of country music, I had never considered walking down Honky Tonk Row as a vacation. My perception was that Nashville was pure country and although it is, there is so much more to Nashville than the Grand Ole Opry. Known as Music City, Nashville is a destination for families, girlfriends looking for a getaway, art lovers and music enthusiasts. Don’t get me wrong, I have become a diehard country music fan and from the time I disembarked the plane, Nashville was in full swing. As I walked past security, a country band was playing and people were actually milling around obviously in no hurry to claim their baggage. Passing by a heart defibrillator on the wall, I laughed as I read the plaque, “For your Achy Breaky Heart”. My first stop was the Parthenon. Nicknamed the “Athens of the South,” it is the world’s only full-size reproduction of the Parthenon and was built in 1897 for the Tennessee Centennial Exposition. It houses an art gallery and a 42-foot Athena gilded with eight pounds of gold leaf, which was built by Alan Lequire, one of the nation’s premiere sculptors. For foodies, there are several places you can indulge, and my first night brought me to a table at Capital Grille located in The Hermitage Hotel. Walking through the doors of this 100-year-old hotel was stepping back to a time of ornate elegance and refinement. The restaurant was just as elegantly appointed but the food was what won high acclaims. The dishes are prepared from food bought at the National Farmer’s Market as well as their own farm. I woke up the following morning with Billy Currington playing my wake up call and headed to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum; 40,000 square feet of everything country. Glancing into the archive room, I could see the ghosts of music past wandering the aisles of packed boxes and guitar cases; so much music history in one room. The displays were breathtaking with costumes, boots, and personal artifacts from the likes of Reba, George Strait, Mel Tillis and Kenny Rogers. (FYI, eating their fried pickles cannot be missed.) Cruising down historic Music Row and stopping in front of Studio B brought chills, for here in this recording studio in the middle of the night, Elvis recorded “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” Next, I made my way over to the Johnny Cash Museum. For all you lovers of the ”man in black,” trust me, you will not want to miss this. The museum is made up of artifacts, interactive stations, extensive displays and a gift shop. Okay, you’re probably wondering when I am going to stop talking country music and get to the parts of Nashville that aren’t. I suppose I can break away for a bit and fill you in on all the “other” amazing things to do. The list is endless. There is the Nashville Zoo, Adventure Science Center, Belle Meade Plantation, Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum of Art (my favorite), The Hermitage which is the home of Andrew Jackson, Jack Daniel’s Distillery (a short distance away), Arrington Vineyards, Frist Center for the Visual Arts, the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center. Finally, a visit to Nashville just wouldn’t be complete without visiting the Grand Ole Opry. Save a night (or two) to peruse the Honky Tonks and be careful, the lights and music of Honky Tonk Row are more intoxicating than the beer. Spending time in Nashville was a check mark on my bucket list and coming home with a pair of boots was a bonus. Those are the same boots I plan on wearing when I return. See you at Tootsies.Debbie Martinez is a Miami Dade resident and Travel Editor for The Florida Villager. She can be reached at debbiemartinez1@mac.com.

Reclaiming Your Home After Divorce BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ, DIVORCE COACH

D

IVORCE IS A SAD AND DIFFICULT TIME NO MATTER WHAT side of the coin you’re on. One of the many challenges after the ink has dried is how to reclaim the marital home as your own. Years of decorating, mementos and memories have accumulated in those four walls but now something has changed. One of the inhabitants is gone but the ghost remains. When you divorce and for whatever reason have kept the marital home and can’t afford to throw everything out and start over, here are some things you can do to reclaim it for your own. »» First things first, open your doors/windows, play some soft music and sage your house. Energetically and emotionally this will feel awesome. »» Purge. Go room-by-room and throw things out and organize. »» Change up your style. If your house presently resembles an English cottage, then switch to contemporary or coastal. You can throw in little pieces that will change the tone. Mixing styles works better than you think. »» Take a Saturday and explore consignment shops or estate sales for inexpensive touches that reflect the new you. »» Never underestimate the power of paint and rearranging the furniture and artwork. If a painting was in the hall, switch it to your bedroom. A chair that sat in the living room can make its way to the study. »» Redo your bedroom. That is your haven and you need to feel emotionally safe there. Throw out the sheets and towels or if you can’t afford to replace the towels, get them monogrammed. If you can afford it, buy a new mattress. »» Once your ex’s clothes are out of the closet, spread yours out. Don’t leave gaping holes as a daily reminder. Whatever he/she took off of the vanity or out of drawers, replace with your things. »» If you have children, depending on the age, engage them in your little renovation project. Feel them out to see what they are comfortable with. Remember, your children are going to pick up on how you feel and what you say. Act excited and positive and they will too. »» Start new traditions. Thursday night is Taco Night! »» Give the outside a splash of color in the form of throw pillows on the chaise, flowers or a new umbrella. »» De-clutter the garage. Get rid of old paint cans and give it a good sweeping. Reclaiming your home isn’t about being frivolous with money; it’s about healing. If it costs you a little extra to start closing that wound, than it was money well spent. A friend of mine, Ellen Allen, said, “The process of creating our nests again can start the healing process.” No truer words were spoken. There is a quote by Mizuta Masahide, a 17th century Japanese poet and samurai, I want to leave you with. It is about seeing opportunities in an otherwise bad situation. “Now that my house has burned down, I have a better view of the rising moon.” And by the way, after your little renovation is over, throw open those doors and have a party to usher in your new chapter!
