Get Ready for Summer!

A

PRIL HAS ARRIVED, ALONG WITH LONGER DAYS AND WARMER TEMPERAtures. Although adjusting to the time change seemed a bit harder this go around, we’re loving the extra daylight it brings with it. To all the people who enjoyed a spring break, we hope it was relaxing and refreshing. We can’t believe summer is only a few months away! The April edition of the magazine features the Summer Camp Guide (pages 15-26), which previews a large selection of local camps available for children this summer. Also included in the Guide is a great article about choosing the right camp for your child. With so many amazing camp options available in our community, every interest can be met! As the end of the school year approaches, events such as prom and graduation become a main topic of focus, especially where clothing is concerned. The Spring buying season has arrived in the world of real estate as well, when a frenzy of activity hits the market. For a very informative read about the importance placed on pricing a house, be sure to check out local realtor Frank DeValdivielso’s article (page 31). Voting for The Florida Villager’s Best of the Best Reader’s Choice Awards is winding down. The last day to vote is April 15th. If you have not yet, vote online at www. thefloridavillager.com/bestof2016. We can’t wait for this Special Edition to come out in May! And don’t forget to connect with us via social media. A New Cure For A Common Problem

A

FFECTING ANYWHERE BETWEEN 20 TO 45 PERCENT of middle-aged and elderly women (according to the North American Menopause Society), vaginal atrophy may be the least talked about, yet most common, problem for women of a certain age. Now there is a solution! The Mona Lisa Touch is an FDA-approved medical laser available for use in the U.S., replacing past treatment options such as hormone therapies, which are often laden with side effects or contraindications. So what is the Mona Lisa Touch and how does it work? Here’s what you need to know. WHAT IS VAGINAL ATROPHY AND WHAT CAUSES IT? Vaginal atrophy is a condition often coinciding with menopause in which the vaginal walls thin and dry out, creating issues with urinary functions, dryness and tightening as well as pain during sexual intercourse. Though often painful and frustrating for sufferers, few women ask for help –or know it exists. HOW DOES THE MONA LISA TOUCH WORK? The medical laser works similar to other laser treatments, counteracting the atrophy by stimulating collagen

production inside the vagina rather than altering hormone levels; essentially rehydrating, reviving dead skin and improving the condition of the vaginal walls. WHAT DOES THE PROCEDURE ENTAIL? Patients will receive three treatments spaced about six weeks apart. Each procedure takes only a few minutes to perform. The procedure is done in-office (patients feel only a small vibration) and requires no anesthesia or painkiller, with patients able to resume sexual intercourse after about 48 hours. After the three treatments, some patients may return for annual maintenance. HOW FAST WILL PATIENTS FEEL THE RESULTS? Many patients experience symptom relief after just one treatment and almost all feel a difference after the second. IS IT SAFE? A multisite study was conducted by two leading Urogynecologists who are experts in the field of post-

menopausal gynecologic health; and recent results from a trial on postmenopausal women and breast cancer survivors showed positive results and high patient satisfaction. HOW CAN I GET MORE INFORMATION? For more information and to see if you are a candidate for the Mona Lisa Touch, contact Ana Bueno, R.N. at South Miami Women’s Health / Drs. Phillips, Miller, Roca and Venditto at 305.665.9644

In an effort to grow one million native and endangered orchids as part of the Million Orchid Project conservation initiative, Fairchild unveiled its new STEMLab, a mobile tissue culture lab in partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools, on Friday, March 11 during the first day of Fairchild’s Orchid Festival. In attendance were Superintendent Alberto Carvalho, who addressed the importance of making science education accessible to all South Florida students, University of Miami School of Architecture students and staff, students of BioTECH @ Richmond Heights, Fairchild staff, and Miami-Dade County Public Schools officials. University of Miami School of Architecture’s Design/Build students constructed the lab inside of a decommissioned school bus. The STEMLab will soon travel from school to school, giving students the opportunity to propagate their own orchids, lending to an important environmental restoration effort.

Spring Restaurant Preview

T

IRED OF THE SAME OLD DINNERS (OR LUNCHES) out? Check out these much-anticipated restaurant openings and get ahead of the game this spring...

Inject a little luxury into your life with New York’s famed Caviar Russe, now open on Brickell Avenue. Head over to shop for champagne and caviar in the on-site retail space and stay for a caviar-inspired crudo, iced seafood tower, or simply multi-course caviar tasting menu. The Grove gets a new buzzworthy hotspot thanks to Glass & Vine, the much-anticipated partnership between Eating House’s Giorgio Rapicavoli and Grove Bay Hospitality. Housed in the former Coconut Grove Library space at the heart of Peacock Park, the eatery will feature “Garden, Sea and Land” offerings meant to be shared and mix-and-matched.

NBA star Ray Allen and wife Shannon bring health-conscious fare to the drive-thru with South Miami’s Grown, offering everything from soups and salads to gluten-free baked goods and cold-pressed juice.

Those mourning the loss of Miami’s Best Pizza may find their spirits lifted after a visit to it’s new tenant, Spring Chicken. From the team behind Yardbird and Swine, this casual addition to the Gables scene is serving up (what else?) chicken, biscuits, salads, sandwiches and other kid-friendly eats, plus wine and beer for the adults.

Another Grove addition comes courtesy of LoKal and Kush owner Matt Kuscher in the form of The Spillover (set to open this month), a cider and seafood-focused eatery (think BBQ Gator Ribs and Conch Strips) with plenty of read-made fans… and, as always, pet-friendly outdoor seating.

Everyone’s favorite grilled cheese truck, Ms. Cheezious takes up space in Coral Gables this month (just in time for National Grilled Cheese Month), serving up it’s local favorites as well as beers and milkshakes.

GULLIVER PARTNERSHIP Breakthrough Miami and Gulliver Schools have announced a partnership that will give motivated students from low-income backgrounds expanded access to high-level learning opportunities. Breakthrough Miami will soon begin using Gulliver’s classrooms and other educational facilities to provide summer and Saturday enrichment classes and activities to high-achieving public-school students. Gulliver’s dedication of facilities and educational resources will help Breakthrough Miami students prepare for and succeed in college, with the goal of closing the “achievement gap” between students from affluent families and those from under-resourced backgrounds. Ultimately, the Gulliver Prep campus will serve 180 additional students from Southwest Miami-Dade.

RANSOM EVERGLADES CELEBRATES OUTSTANDING STUDENTS Ransom’s middle-school history team won two of three titles at the South Florida Regional History Bee on Feb. 23, and all five team members advanced to the national championships in Chicago in June. Javi Kumar won the event for sixth grade and Lucas Miner won for eighth at Young Middle School in Pembroke Pines. Additionally, Ransom junior Debbie Ajagbe became the national leader among high school girls in discus with her throw of 157 feet, 10 inches at Belen Jesuit Preparatory School on March 8. Ajagbe won the state title in the event last year.

ST. BRENDAN’S ARTIST St. Brendan’s sophomore Alexandra Moros had her artistic talents recognized in January when she was one of 25 students to have a piece (hers was a colored pencil drawing) chosen for exhibition in the 65th Annual Beaux Arts Festival at the University of Miami.

Selling Your Home?

Spring OF THINGS GET INTO THE

BY ROSIE CRUZ-SOTERO, REALTOR®

Although weather is still cooler than usual in South Florida, spring is a hot time to sell a home. Here are some tips on how you can improve the odds that your home will “blossom” among the myriad of new listings hitting the spring-time real estate market: GET A HEAD START ON CLUTTER Since you’ll eventually be moving, why not start packing now? Starting the packing process early will help get you mentally and physically ready to move. This means getting organized by sorting through storage closets, attics, and garages to determine items you may want to keep and others you’ll want to give away or sell. Getting rid of stacks of unpaid bills, unread newspapers, refrigerator notes, and other visible items is just as important. While everyone has clutter, it can certainly be a deterrent for buyers who want to envision themselves in your home. CLEAN-UP Cleaning your house inside and out will create an inviting feeling for potential buyers. They will be drawn to spotless windows, sparkling mirrors and floors, and the scent of crisp linens. Send your window coverings to the dry cleaners, thoroughly vacuum blinds or toss into a soapy bathtub, and steam-clean all area rugs and carpets. CURB APPEAL Before potential buyers step foot into your home, the first-impressionclock starts ticking. Start with your lawn: clean out dead leaves and debris, and consider a diagonally mowed lawn to make your yard appear larger. Don’t let overgrown foliage block the windows or entrance path. Give your front door a squeaky clean-over and repaint for a fresh look. Plant colorful flowers near the entrance, especially yellow ones, which stimulate buying urges, happiness, and contentment.

MINOR IMPROVEMENTS While you don’t necessarily want to invest in major improvements before you sell, you’d be surprised the results minor enhancements and repairs can yield. Considering the value kitchens and bathrooms add to a home, quick updates like painting or replacing dated hardware and fixtures, can add a significant impact. If your kitchen lacks a backsplash, this is the perfect time to add one for a touch of charm. Also, try replacing the caulk and grout in your bathroom, and resurface any bathtubs. Evaluate the spaces in your home that have the boldest color and tone them down to a neutral palette. This way, buyers can envision a blank canvas for their own décor. INTERVIEW REALTORS® Your choice of a listing agent will make a big difference in how quickly your home sells and how much of a profit you’ll generate. Interview several agents to evaluate which ones have a deep local knowledge of similar homes in your price range and area. A REALTOR® with a great marketing plan, local and global resources and professional tech tools is crucial in promoting your home. Be wary of REALTORS who tell you they can sell for the highest price; instead choose someone who can present you with a detailed market analysis. Summer Camp Listings Choosing the Right Summer Camp BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

A

S A DIRECTOR OF RIVIERA DAY CAMP, THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR OF RIVIERA Prep, and the founder and owner of Court’s 1-on-1 Universe, Courtney Young has more experience than most when it comes to choosing a camp for his children. So we asked the longtime Miami resident to share his tips on navigating the sometimes overwhelming South Florida camp scene. Here are five things to consider, straight from an expert. 1. Safety. Young advises parents to think beyond the obvious. “All camps should be physically safe, but it’s the emotional side you need to consider as well,” he says. Taking into account the philosophy of the camp and the relationships with the director can be telling on both sides. A red flag? A director who’s not available for communication with parents, staff, and/or campers. 2. Staff. Young advises parents to look into not only the age of the staff but how they are hired and trained. Are there background checks? What kind of responsibilities does each counselor have when it comes to the kids? What’s the ratio of staff to campers? While high schools students can make great assistants or helpers, Young says they may not be the best first choice for a group counselor. “Think of it this way: ‘How can a child be responsible for another child?’” 3. Amenities. In the Miami summer heat, Young suggests making sure the camp has either a pool and/or an air-conditioned indoor space to keep kids cool and out of the sun for part of the day. Another Miami challenge? The rain. “Make sure to ask them what they do when it’s pouring all day,” he says. 4. Logistics. The basics may be covered in brochures ,but Young says asking the right questions can enhance your confidence in and understanding of the program. Some suggested ones? “How does the day go?” “Does my child choose what he or she does, or is the program scheduled for the group?” “Do they walk around alone?” and “What happens when they have to use the restroom?” 5. Security. From checking IDs at pickup to authorized lists of who can and cannot remove campers from the camp, Young says having an attendance policy in place is a major security precaution that parents should investigate. “Ask them how they take attendance and how they run dismissal.”

STEM Development BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

SK ANY EDUCATOR OR EDUCATION PROFESSIONAL WHAT THE BUZZWORD of the day is and STEM will most likely be the first word out of the mouth. The acronym, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, has been drawing attention for its growing importance in preparing students not just for traditional STEM careers but for all future paths in today’s business world. “The world is completely different – students have to have a great understanding of technology, even in liberal arts,” says Neydy Gomez, who, along with partner Claudia Machado, co-owns South Miami’s Zaniac, an afterschool enrichment program that uses game-based learning to engage kids in creative, conceptual problem solving. While Gomez says the majority of students fall in the first-to-fifth grade age group, the program “really is for everyone,” offering up everything from LEGO Robotics courses to those on Minecraft, Tinkering, Fashion Design (complete with 3D printing) and more. “The thing that was so great [about Zaniac] was that there wasn’t anything here offering such a diverse variety of STEM programs under one roof,” says Gomez, who opened the franchise last year. “It really reinforces science and math concepts in a different way. Students find a way to apply them to the real world.” The Zaniac program originated in Park City, Utah with Paul Zane Pilzer, a longtime economics professor and noted economic advisor. Gomez, always on the lookout for innovative educational ideas, stumbled upon Pilzer’s ideas while looking for a new way to teach her daughter math. Pilzer’s game-based teaching style appealed to the mom, but, after realizing the center was in Utah, she backed off of the idea. Months later Machado mentioned that a friend of hers in Connecticut was opening a Zaniac franchise and Gomez had a Eureka moment. “I told her ‘This is the program I was looking at,’” she says. Gomez says it’s not just the educational benefits that keep her passionate about the program, but the ideas behind the teaching. “The other thing that drew me to Zaniac was that the approach is to learn through peer-to-peer learning,” she says. “It allows students to think they’re playing During the school year, Zaniac After-School Programs while learning and sharing their knowledge with others. It builds self-confidence, it’s meet for 90 minutes, once a week for six weeks. During empowering.” summer and vacation breaks, Zaniac Camps meet for This summer, Zaniac will condense it’s usual six-week programs into one-week camps, 3 hours, every day for five days (M-F). broken down into morning and afternoon sessions that merge specific programs with other fun and games (think paper airplane races and balloon cars built from scratch). “We teach with hands-on activities. They’re not sitting in a room listening to a teacher,” says Gomez, “We want them to understand that everything they’re learning has a real life application. We let them experiment… it’s part of the game. They’re able to find new ideas and make mistakes without feeling like failure.” In the end though, it’s preparation for the future that Zaniac hopes to leave students with… no matter what they’re chosen field or interest. “Even if you want to be a chef you have to understand technology,” says Gomez. “Careers that you would never think… this is something you need. It’s really a different world.” Zaniac is located at 8322 S. Dixie Hwy, Miami, FL 33143. For more information, please call 305.668.0605 or visit zaniaclearning.com.

For the Love of Dance BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

Y

OU COULD SAY THAT BARBARA DELGADO ACOSTA has dance in her blood. The founder and executive director of the Miami Dance Project was introduced to the world of dance as a child and—for all intents and purposes—never quite left. “My mother [Maruxa Fajarado] was a dancer and she brought me into the dance world,” says Acosta. “That’s basically all I’ve ever done.” Born in Mexico to Cuban parents, Acosta honed her talents under the watchful eyes of her mother’s friends, Cuban ballet dancers and members of the emerging modern dance scene in Miami”…as it was developing into the arts center that it is today.” Following a formal education that took her through magnet programs, New World School of the Arts and the University of Florida (as well as summers in New York with Alvin Ailey and other famed dance schools), Acosta took a job at Joe Michaels Dance Studio. That relationship planted the seed for what would become the Miami Dance Project. “I was saving up for a wedding but when [Joe’s daughters] decided to sell they came to me,” says Acosta. “I used the money to buy the studio instead.” It was while running the studio (renamed New Image) that Acosta realized a growing need in the dance community. “In 1998 I was working with the South Miami Middle School dance program and I saw that a lot of the girls who were talented couldn’t afford the right training,” she says. “I realized how many great dancers were missing out on furthering their education because of finances.” And the Miami Dance Project was born. Today, the nonprofit works with individual and corporate donors, as well as grants from Miami-Dade County, to create scholarships for dancers in MDP’s recreational and competitive programs (Acosta merged New Image into MDP last year). For the dancers, that means everything from ballet and jazz to tap and modern, with children aged three to 16 training under the close eye of Acosta and her team. And while many of her dancers have gone on to dance with famed companies and have even competed on national television (think “So You Think You Can Dance?”), Acosta says it’s not just the naturals who flourish at MDP. “What we do well is to create a studio that feels like home, it feels like a family,” she says. “I’ve seen many students who weren’t naturally given the talent, but when you give them the opportunity and the education they shine. We really develop kids.” One aspect of that development is MDP’s competition program, an intensive dance study that Acosta calls “a little more rigorous, a little more formal,” than the recreational instruction. But even within that arena, she strives to maintain the humble, friendly, focused vibe that she initially conceived with the studio. “Being a competition studio, I’m proud that we work hard to have the parents remain humble and be good people even with all of our wins. There’s no arrogance.”

26

The Florida Villager

04.2016

In fact, her competition students often help out with another of Acosta’s passions— a special needs program that she launched in 2005 (“I want them to realize that trophies are not the end all,” she says.). After learning of a woman in California who developed Autism Movement Therapy, Acosta flew to the west coast to become certified before beginning the program in Miami, the first studio to do so. Today she not only works with between 10 and 15 special needs students at MDP, but also with the Be Unique Academy at the JCC where they run the school’s dance program. The studio also works closely with Autism Speaks, taking care of the entertainment at the annual walk and populating the stage with performances from special needs children. Looking ahead, Acosta hopes to continue to foster

Miami dance talent and watch them grow from toddlers to shining stars in schools such as New World, NYU and other elite dance programs and companies around the world. And far from missing them when they eventually move onward, Acosta says she now gets the pleasure of seeing former students directing and choreographing around South Florida…and the entire country. Says Acosta with a laugh, “We’re raising our own competition.” Providing Exceptional Dance Training & Results in Miami since 1999, come and visit our State of The Art Dance Studio at 6840 SW 81ST Terrace, Miami, FL 33143. NAME:

Tom Whitehurst UM-NSU CARD / Work For America BACKGROUND: Whitehurst became involved with UM-NSU CARD (it stands for Center for Autism and Related Disabilities) when his son, Thomas, was diagnosed with autism more than 20 years ago. “When it became apparent that CARD was not receiving adequate funding from the state budget, my wife and I were part of the initial effort to hold a fundraising event to help them,” he says. That event, Tropical Nights, celebrates its 14th anniversary this year, with the event (May 7 at The InterContinental Miami Hotel) honoring Whitehurst with its CARD Community Leadership Award. “Tropical Nights is now a signature event in our community and raises much needed monies to help CARD continue to offer the myriad of services and programs that families need,” says Whitehurst. “We’ve seen [the event] grow from a small social function to an event attended by over 500 supporters.” ABOUT UM-NSU CARD: Based in UM’s Department of Psychology (and at NSU in Broward), CARD is dedicated to improving the lives of individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and their families, offering services, research initiatives, social and support groups and more. In the past the Center has created everything from Project Sail at Shake a Leg in Coconut Grove to a surf camp on Miami Beach as well as social and recreational outings and conference scholarships. “In South Florida alone, CARD serves almost 10,000 individuals with ASD,” says Whitehurst. “Their services are free of charge to these individuals, their families and the professionals that support them.” NEW OPPORTUNITIES: After seeing his son complete three years of culinary training only to find himself unemployed, Whitehurst saw an opening to create employment opportunities for adults with DD. With approximately 50,000 individuals with autism turning 22 each year (the year that marks the end of most government support services), Whitehurst says unemployment among these adults is estimated to be more than 90 percent… as are rates of social isolation. Enter Work for America, the local nonprofit Whitehurst founded last year. “Our plans for Work for America are to start enterprises that will employ adults with DD and to assist families and other organizations that are doing so,” he says. “We are all about creating jobs, not just training for jobs that will never exist.”

28

The Florida Villager

FUTURE PLANS: Right now Whitehurst and CARD are working hard to promote this year’s Tropical Nights event and raise much needed funds for future expansion. As for Work for America, they’ve found a partner in Miami’s OPA Works, a school/day program for people with Autism, Downs Syndrome and other DD and the first major enterprise they’re supporting. “They have 50 adults in their program and are off to a flying start.”

‘‘

While I am proud to have fought the good fight for CARD and all of the other wonderful groups in the community, I am actually most proud of the struggles that my son Thomas must overcome every day of his life to succeed at things we take for granted. He never stops trying. ”

N APRIL 29 AT 10 A.M. THE CITY IS HOSTING THE ANNUAL Arbor Day Celebration. Join us at Alhambra Circle and Majorca Avenue to recognize the important role that Frank M. Button, the city’s original landscape architect, had in the design of the city’s majestic tree-lined streets and boulevards. The City will also recognize the Landscape Beautification Award winners, the property owners who continue today in the spirit of Button’s legacy by adorning their residences with beautiful lush greens and flowers. As a Tree City USA for more than 30 years, Coral Gables has proven its commitment to maintain a healthy tree canopy. Last year the city began the Tree Succession project with an aggressive agenda of planting more than 3,000 trees and palms throughout residential areas. Many neighborhoods have already seen the results as the projects moves along from zone to zone planting additional trees to beautify our city. The planting of new trees not only delivers environmental benefits, it also increases property values and provide a gratifying sense of place. Help us nurture and celebrate the precious Coral Gables tree canopy.

R E AL ESTAT E TALK

It’s The Pricing, Silly BY FRANK DEVALDIVIELSO

T

HE SPRING BUYING SEASON IS HERE! HOMEOWNERS ARE getting ready for market and buyers are studying the conditions. According to The Florida Association of Realtors 39 percent of the total yearly sales take place between April and July. This generates a frenzy of activity in the market. The end of the school year is around the corner and it’s time for families to move. Inventory levels are rising and buyer demand is, too. Ready, set, go! The homes that will sell this spring will do so because the sellers are motivated, the buyers see the value and they are both ready, willing and able to close the deal. Now is a good time to get real and sell your home because there will be more eyes looking at it than in other months. The eyes of the buyers are very well trained. They get to used the services of realtors to help them navigate and understand the market. Also, the internet offers excellent information about the homes, the neighborhoods, schools, crime rate, demographics, transit times for commuting and, of course, the price for which other similar homes have sold. In many cases, buyers do more homework than sellers when it comes to research on the properties. They certainly see more homes as part of the selection process. Sellers have the same resources available at their fingertips, including knowledgeable realtors and the option to go see open houses that are similar to their home. Once a homeowner decides to sell, it’s time to call all the resources in and get detailed information on what is going on in the market now. Motivated sellers want real intel, not pie in the sky. With that information the homeowner has to pick a pricing strategy: list high to leave room to negotiate; list at fair market value; price below market value. All three are used regularly and the length of time that it takes to sell the home is a clear indicator of which one it was. The longer on the market, the more time the homeowner spent “chasing the market”. If it sells fast it’s because they nailed the pricing. The reasoning to price below market is often used when homes are in need of repair or remodeling. It’s very difficult to find those deals, just ask anyone who “flips” houses for a living and you’ll see. The real estate market in our community is a benevolent one. If you bought property in 1996 it’s probably doubled or tripled in value. Few other markets in the nation perform that well. This may be one reason that some buyers are willing to pay above the current fair market value in anticipation of living in the home for a long time. There is also an emotional component in that decision, as you may know. Such as, the spouse loves the house and makes it very clear to the other. As we all know a happy spouse equals a happy life! The challenge again in this selling season for homeowners will be to find someone that is trustworthy to tell them the truth about the market and their home. One of the more difficult moments during the listing period is when the seller and realtor have to discuss pricing the home to sell. It’s a conversation that will happen at the beginning of the listing or sometime thereafter. The market is the market. If you’re priced too high, wait and one day the home will be worth what you want. In that case it’s not a matter of price it’s a matter of time in the market. Or, take your head out of the sand, look at what’s going on around you and make the adjustment. If you want to move, now’s a great time to start living in your new home! Frank DeValdivielso, a member the Miami FL Team and The Keyes Company, is based out of 2423 Le Jeune Road, Coral Gables, FL 33134. HOW COMMON IS IT TO FIND CURRENT TRENDS (ESPECIALLY IN FORMAL WEAR) IN A CONSIGNMENT STORE AND WHAT ARE YOU SEEING RIGHT NOW? At a consignment store you will find many unique styles as well as current trends in formal wear. When buying from a consignment store, feel confident that your selection is one of a kind and will stand out among the many other dresses that are likely to be purchased at a common retail store. It is important to keep in mind that some high schools may have guidelines for the attire (i.e. bare midriff, open back, low cut) to be worn on prom night. At our store, we work with each girl and will be happy to hold a dress for a few days to make sure it is exactly what she wants.

The Truth About Hospice

A

DMITTING A PATIENT TO HOSPICE DOES NOT MEAN GIVING UP HOPE. Hospice care provides pain and symptom management and appropriate palliative care when curative medical treatments no longer enhance the patient’s quality of life. The focus of care shifts toward helping the patient achieve maximum quality of life from a physical, emotional and spiritual perspective. Hospice programs provide medication to manage symptoms related to the primary illness. Each patient receives the medical equipment and supplies necessary to enhance overall comfort and safety including, but not limited to, hospital beds, bedside commode, an over bed table, oxygen, and dressing supplies. When finding a Hospice program for you or a family member, it is important to ask about the levels of care that particular Hospice program offers.

Hospice Care of South Florida, for example, provides four levels of care: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Routine Home Care Continuous Care at Home General Inpatient Care Respite Care

Routine home care provides patient care availability wherever the patient considers home, including a residence, skilled nursing facility or assisted living community. New generations often opt for the option of staying at home during their final moments or when seriously ill, with their family by their side. “Everybody agrees that they don’t want to be in the emergency room and they don’t want to come into

the hospital,” says Amy Kelley, MD, associate professor in the department of geriatrics and palliative medicine at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. Hospice provides the opportunity for a person to spend their last moments where they feel most comfortable. Continuous care at home means hospice provides medical management at the home 24 hours a day. During times of crisis, when death is impending or the patient has worsened, hospice provides additional services to allow the patient to remain at home. A patient may also be admitted to general inpatient care if there are certain medical needs that cannot be managed at home. Finally, respite care is when a hospice program provides a short-term accommodation of the patient in order to provide temporary relief to caregivers. Oftentimes, the caregiver’s own health declines due to stress and lack of time to care for himself. When a family needs a “break” some hospice programs will offer respite care to give them an opportunity to rest. Breaks are necessary for the caregiver to refresh and return to the patient with a stronger and revitalized ability to care for him or her. In hospice care, the caregiver/hospice aid is in constant communication with the rest of the team to identify physical and emotional changes. The program also teaches families how to meet the physical and emotional needs of the patient, as well as to provide ongoing support and education. For more information on Hospice of South Florida, please call the 24-hour phone line at 305-591-1606 or visit www.hospicesouthflorida.org.

Meet Hannah & Noah

H

ANNAH (THE FEMALE TABBY CAT) AND HER BROTHER NOAH (THE MALE black cat) are ten year old domestic shorthair cats. They were adopted as kittens after being abandoned at a veterinarian’s clinic. Their favorite toys are a squirrel and furry spider. Hannah and Noah are great hunters who love to show off their treasures. Their favorite activities are hunting, sleeping, and eating. They would eat all the time if they could. Noah loves to be brushed, and jumps up on the laundry table and whines if he’s not brushed daily. Hannah mostly ignores people and prefers to sleep. Hannah really enjoys steamed broccoli, while Noah enjoys blueberries. They exhibit typical cat behavior, and when they want to be petted is up to them.

Dementia in Pets

S. SMITH BROUGHT FLUFFY FOR AN EXAM, SAYING “FOR THE LAST FEW MONTHS FLUFFY wakes up in the middle of the night pacing and panting. I take him outside to do his thing and then I pet him until he calms down and goes to sleep. I cannot take it anymore, I need sleep.” Sound familiar? Many owners of older pets might find themselves dealing with age-related problems that were unheard of when they were growing up with the family pet. The facts is, that thanks to the advances in veterinary medicine, improved diets and improved pet care, our pets are living longer that ever. This leaves pet owners with the responsibility of managing conditions related to the natural aging process of our pets. These conditions are seen at organ level (kidney insufficiency), skeletal level (arthritis), sensory level (deafness) and brain level (senility). The signs of normal aging in the brain are perhaps less obvious, since it involves loss of cognitive capacity. When that loss is beyond what is expected in the normal aging pet it is called dementia, or more properly in the veterinary world Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CDS). In dementia, the cognitive deficits of your dog or cat are so severe that it affects the social functioning of the pet. Animal dementia is seen in 50 percent of dogs and cats older than 15 years of age. Not every pet is affected and it is suspected that there might be genetic basis for its development. Pet dementia or CDS is comparable with Alzheimer’s in humans. It is so common in pets that many of the pet insurance companies cover its management. But what causes this brain condition? There are multiple changes simultaneously occurring in the brain that lead to dementia. It is important that you are in tune with your older pet, as dementia is diagnosed based on the signs closely observed by the owner. If you suspect your pet might be suffering from dementia is important to take your pet to the doctor for a comprehensive exam including blood evaluation and X-rays to rule out disorders related to the organs, the senses or the skeleton that might mimic dementia. The signs of dementia or CDS are behavioral in nature. You may notice your pet shows periods of disorientation (“Fluffy, what are you doing standing in the middle of the living room all by yourself?”), a decrease in activity (“Come on boy, let’s go for a walk. Come on!”), less interaction with the family, more irritability (“be carefully with Fluffy”), disturbed sleeping patterns or episodes of anxiety in the middle of the night. The good news is that even though there is no cure for dementia, pets with this condition can have an acceptable quality of life if the owner, together with the veterinarian, is committed to managing the condition. It is important to modify the environment to enrich and stimulate the senses. In other words, take your pet out to explore different, new environments even if it’s simply going to different sections of your garden. Stimulate the senses by exposing your older pet to calming music. Touch and pet your older dog or cat in a rhythmic, calming way in order to provide tactile stimulus. Make sure to provide regular controlled exercise; it not only improves the musculoskeletal system but also helps maintain a healthy cardio condition in your older pet. If there is advanced arthritis, walking to and from the mailbox two-to-three times a day might be all that is needed. Increase the socialization of your pet. Bring him or her to family gatherings, keep your pet close when watching TV or playing with your iPad, and keep younger pets with the older one so they do not feel left behind. A diet for cognitive dysfunction can be prescribed by your veterinarian. Lastly, certain medications such as Selegiline have been shown to decrease the signs of dementia in severely affected pets. Our aging pets deserve to be treated with respect and dignity in their later years. Aging is not a disease,it is a process of life, and as long as there is no pain involved and our older pet still has the capacity to enjoy the little things in life, it is our duty to help them maintain an acceptable quality of life.

6 Things To Know About Smile Miami BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

W

ITH A MORE THAN 40 YEAR HISTORY IN South Florida, the Cohn family brings more than just a deep understanding of dental health to their practice, Smile Miami. Brothers Adam and Aaron and Dad Jack (Mom Cookie runs the office) each bring their own approach to dentistry to their long list of patients, using state-of-the-art procedures to create long-lasting smiles across the city. Here are six things to know about this well-loved practice. 1. They know what you’re thinking. About the dentists, that is. “We know about the negative connotation of going to a dental appointment and we take on the challenge of making our patients enjoy their experience at our office,” says Cookie. “Everything we do in our office revolves around patient satisfaction.” For the Cohns and their team, that means seeing patients on time and giving them the personal attention that they would expect for themselves. 2. It’s a team operation. Though the Cohn brothers changed their father’s practice from solo practitioner to family operation, they also brought in new ideas and techniques. “All three doctors went to different dental schools and feel lucky

to have been exposed to different ideas throughout their dental education,” says Cookie. “The doctors enjoy discussing different dental cases and often help each other come to a consensus for treatment.” They truly enjoy working together. “Life often flies by at times and you don’t always make time to see your loved ones,” says Cookie. “Working together affords us the opportunity to spend more time together.” They get rave reviews. Watching their father build his practice on the principles of high quality patient care and a trusting patient/ doctor relationship gave Adam and Aaron a solid commitment to those same principles, something they continue to work for on a daily basis. That dedication shows. Online reviews are peppered with words like “professional,” “attentive,” ”friendly,” and the boast “I could never go anywhere else.”

They want to see you more than once a year.

lives and build meaningful relationships,” says Cookie. “We have many families that have third and some fourth generation patients coming to our office. This gives us the ultimate satisfaction.” Prevention is key. The Cohns are keen to let patients know that whatever treatment they need will be delivered at the highest quality with the least amount of discomfort, but the best treatment is taking care of yourself on a daily basis. “If you take care of your teeth you can avoid having major problems,” says Cookie, who recommends regular dental visits for checkups and maintenance. “You don’t realize how important your teeth are until you lose them.”

The team says regular patients who visit a few times per year become more than just patients… they become part of the family. “It gives us the opportunity to know what’s going on in their

ASK T HE PL AST I C SU R G EO N

The Doctor is in…Your Hand BY JOSE M. SOLER-BAILLO M.D., M.S, BOARD CERTIFIED PLASTIC SURGEON, SOUTH MIAMI, FL

Y

an instant. But what about our doctors? Here in the US, the federal government has required the protection and confidential handling of protected health information through laws known as HIPAA. These requirements have placed restrictions on the means by which a doctor can communicate with a patient. Therefore, there has been a boom in technologies that allow for patients and doctors to communicate through the world wide web that comply with the restrictions and regulations set forth by the government. In a field like plastic surgery, privacy is particularly important as I operate on several patients who have told only one, maybe two, people that they are undergoing a cosmetic procedure. These HIPAA-compliant communication applications allow doctors and patients to connect as if the exam room door has just been shut. As I sit in the operating room doing what I enjoy most, I contemplate where medicine is headed. Robots are already performing surgeries, and I don’t have to meet a new patient or check up on an old one by making them come to the office from different parts of the city, state, country, or even world. I think it is a good thing, though. As medicine and technology continue to progress, we should take advantage of the integration it allows. Less time is wasted, better results are achieved, patient care remains the focus, and most importantly, the quality of life is improved. An International, multilingual Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Jose Soler-Baillo brings to South Florida a refreshing, modern approach to Cosmetic Surgery. Dr. Soler-Baillo earned his Medical Degree at the prestigious Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, trained in General Surgery at the Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey, and received extensive training in Plastic Surgery in Miami, New York, and Texas. Dr. Soler-Baillo is Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. For more information please visit, resultsmd.com or email info@soler-baillo.com.

OU KNOW THE ROUTINE: YOU WALK IN, SAY HELLO, SIGN your name, and sit down not knowing how long you’ll have to have your face in a magazine you don’t really care about reading. Pretty much everyone has had this experience at least once at a doctor’s office. We all have busy lives and, quite frankly, nobody likes waiting. What if it could be possible, though, for you to make your appointment online and see the doctor the second it starts, even if you are hundreds or even thousands of miles away? Today, such advances in medicine and technology (telehealth) are shifting the patient-doctor interaction from the office to the smartphone or tablet, making it possible to be monitored and communicate securely without the need of being physically present. As a board-certified plastic surgeon who runs a practice that also specializes in weight loss, I understand the necessity for an in-depth evaluation of a patient’s anatomy prior to offering medical advice. A phone call, email, or pictures can only get me so far. Plus, I enjoy being able to converse with patients face-to-face so that we get to build a rapport prior to their treatments. Unfortunately in South Florida, traffic is a burden that we seemingly encounter at any hour of the day. Having the means of seeing your physician from the comfort of your home or office eliminates the need for penciling in a visit to the doctor’s office while allowing you to account for the hundreds of other responsibilities you have on your agenda for the day. In the technological era that we live in, it is almost too easy to communicate with those who are geographically distant from us. With smartphone applications such as Facetime, Skype, and WhatsApp, we can reach our friends, family, and coworkers in
